Brain MRI high resolution image creation and segmentation with the new GAN method

Altun Güven, Sara; Talu, Muhammed Fatih

Brain magnetic resonance imaging segmentation is a recent and still popular research area. Good and accurate segmentation results play an important role in the diagnosis of cancer or other brain diseases. In this article, a novel Generative Adversarial Network architecture is proposed for brain magnetic resonance imaging segmentation. The proposed method is called SSimDCL (Supervised SimDCL). Four studies were conducted in this article. In the first study, the SSimDCL method on the two-dimensional brain magnetic resonance imaging dataset was compared with the current state-of-art architectures CycleGAN, CUT, FastCUT, DCLGAN, and SimDCL. In the second study, the dataset resolution was improved. In the third study, being measured the efficiency of the newly created dataset. And the SSimDCL is trained for both the dataset with increased resolution and the normal dataset, and the results are obtained. In the fourth study, the results of the SSimDCL and the VolBrain brain magnetic resonance imaging segmentation results, which are widely used today, are included. When VolBrain segmentation and SSimDCL segmentation are compared. The results were compared both visually and metrically. Fréchet Inception Distance (FID), Kernel Inception Distance (KID), Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Learned Perceptual Image Patch Similarity (LPIPS) were used as measurement metrics. The Jaccard and Dice similarity metrics were also used in the analysis. It was observed that the SSimDCL give satisfactory results in all four studies. This method can be used as an automatic brain MRI image segmentation system.

Impact of high-pressure homogenisation of milk on physicochemical, microbiological, and textural characteristics of sheep milk yoghurt

Sert, Durmuş; Mercan, Emin; Tanrıkulu, Mehmet

Yoghurt samples were produced from sheep milk that was high-pressure homogenisation (HPH) treated at 0 (control), 30, 50, 70 and 100 MPa. Depending on the acidification kinetic parameters, HPH treatment increased the acidification rate and shortened the fermentation time. HPH-treated samples had lower pH, increased water holding capacity, decreased syneresis, decreased particle size and higher acetaldehyde content than the control. At 0 and 14 days of storage, the tyrosine value of HPH-treated samples was higher than the control. Although HPH resulted in higher L∗ and a∗ values, it caused lower b∗ values in yoghurt samples. Up to 30 MPa, HPH increased firmness and consistency; however, these were decreased above 50 MPa. During storage, Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus counts ranged from 6.12 to 8.20 log cfu g−1 and 5.70 to 8.96 log cfu g−1, respectively. Depending on the increasing pressure, HPH caused higher S. thermophilus and L. bulgaricus counts.

The effect of waste material generated during paper production on the rheological and structural features of asphalt binder

    Yilmaz, Bahadir; Ugurlu, Nuray

In this study, the performance properties of magnesium lignosulfonate, an organic waste material produced during paper production from wood, on asphalt binder were investigated. The modification was carried out by adding magnesium lignosulfonate (MLS) at 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8% by weight to the asphalt with B50/70 penetration grade. The morphological structure, modification mechanism, and thermal decomposition temperatures of the modified asphalt binders formed by adding the MLS to the asphalt were determined by a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), and Thermogravimetry-Differential Thermal Analysis (TG/DTG), respectively. The physical and rheological properties of the material were determined by penetration, softening point, Rolling Thin Film Oven Test (RTFOT), Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR), and Rotational Viscometer (RV) experiments conducted in a laboratory. The experimental results showed that the organic-based waste additive increases the asphalt consistency, rutting, and short-term aging resistance, and decreases the temperature sensitivity.

The radiation has been used in a variety of different fields since its discovery and thus its measurement becomes vital in these industries. Different type detector may be used to measure gamma rays depends on the purposes of measurements. Gamma ray energy spectrum is an important to determine either elemental analysing of a sample or radiation shielding purposes. On the other hand, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) may be used to predict and analysing of gamma-ray spectrum. In this study, gamma ray spectrum from 22Na source detected in NaI (Tl) detector was estimated by ANN. There have been installed ten different ANN models to find the network structure that produces the best predictive value for the gamma ray spectrum NaI (Tl) Detector. Estimation study has been continued with the ANN model with be possessed of lowest error value. ANN model was created by using energy, distance and gamma-rays energy spectrum (called Io) values. In the ANN model developed using the feed forward back propagation algorithm, were used artificial neurons two in the input layer, ten in the hidden layer and one in the output layer. For the case of present work, the experimental data was used 70% for education, 20% for validation and 10% for testing. The estimated values obtained with the ANN model were compared with the experimental results and a good correlation has been found between them (R2 = 0.99).

Bilici, Ozlem Utku; Subasi, Gonca; Dolgunsoz, Emrah

Considering the critical role of readings strategies in L2 reading this study aimed to investigate the impact of strategy training on Turkish EFL learners’ use of global reading strategies. 23 freshmen, enrolled in the ELT Department, participated in the study, and the data were collected through eye tracking and think-aloud protocols. The results are encouraging for the use of reciprocal teaching, one of the comprehension-enhancing approaches to teach reading, in the EFL contexts. Eye tracking results, hand in hand with the think-aloud protocols’ findings, revealed that the participants utilised global reading strategies more frequently to a statistically significant degree after the strategy instruction. Thus, it was concluded that strategy training was useful for the participants to improve their use of global reading strategies, and a recent technological tool can be purposefully integrated into the data collection procedure of educational research studies. Pedagogical implications on the strategy training for the employment of global reading strategies that would help students improve reading skills need to be given attention by teachers.

Cross-cultural difference and spirituality in the workplace

    Kalkan, Nimet; Şükür, Fatma Betül

This chapter aims to consider workplace spirituality from a cross-cultural perspective. The terms workplace spirituality and culture are so intangible, and both start with the attitude and behavior of humans but are meaningful in a community. Because of the constraint of understanding these abstract settings, it is necessary to define and specify the dimensions of both concepts to achieve the aim of this chapter. In this regard, the section starts with the conceptuality of workplace spirituality and the dimensions of the term, which cumulate at individual, group, and organizational levels. It goes with the part of cultural dimensions in the light of Hofstede's (2001) direction, Chhokar, Brodbeck, and House's (2007) extension, and Sharma's (2010) derivation of cultural dimensions for national, organizational, and individual levels, respectively. After joining the dots, the chapter focuses on one of the most sacred research areas for academic literature, cross-cultural differences, and workplace spirituality. The last part of the chapter is the conclusion to point to final notes about the concepts and help guide future studies.

Correlation Between K-value, Density Index and Bifilm Index in Determination of Liquid Al Cleanliness

    Tigli, A.; Tokatli, M.; Uslu, E.; Colak, M.; Dispinar, D.

Aluminum alloys are widely used in the industry thanks to its many advantages such as light weight and high strength. The use of this material in the market is increasing day by day with the developing technology. Due to the high energy inputs in the primary production, the use of secondary ingots by recycling from scrap material are more advantageous. However, the liquid metal quality is quite important in the use of secondary aluminum. It is believed that the quality of recycled aluminum is low, for this purpose, many liquid metal cleaning methods and test methods are used in the industry to assess the melt cleanliness level. In this study, it is aimed to examine the liquid metal quality in castings with varying temperature using K mold. A206 alloy was used, and the test parameters were selected as: (i) at 725 °C, 750 °C and 775 °C casting temperatures, (ii) different hydrogen levels. The hydrogen level was adjusted as low, medium and high with degassing, as-cast, and upgassing of the melt, respectively. The liquid metal quality of the cast samples was examined by the K mold technique. When the results were examined, it was determined that metal K values and the number of inclusions were high at the as-cast and up-gas liquid with increasing casting temperatures. It has been understood that the K mold technique is a practical method for the determination of liquid metal quality, if there is no reduced pressure test machine available at the foundry floor.

Novel PV Array Reconfiguration and Integration with a Maximum Power Point Tracking Algorithm: RMPPT

    Güngör, Okan; Kahveci, Hakan

Partial shading significantly impacts the output power of photovoltaic (PV) arrays. This issue can be addressed by reconfiguring connections or positions of modules within the PV array. However, reconfiguration approaches present some drawbacks including the requirements of manual effort, complex algorithms, difficulty in implementation, and switching matrices that increase power losses. To overcome these issues, we present a low-cost and easily implemented reconfiguration method with integration into a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm for a PV array. We denote our MPPT approach as reconfigurable MPPT (RMPPT), and verify its applicability using a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, namely the reconfigurable PSO. Consequently, this approach has enhanced the output power of the PV array by at least 7.2% compared to PNO (perturb and observe) and PSO-based MPPT under realistic weather conditions.

The contact problem of a functionally graded layer under the effect of gravity

Adiyaman, Gokhan; Oner, Erdal; Yaylaci, Murat; Birinci, Ahmet

This paper considers the continuous and discontinuous contact problems of a functionally graded (FG) layer under the effect of gravity. A finite distributed load is applied to the beam from the top and the beam is placed to the top of a rigid foundation. It is assumed that the shear modulus and mass density of the beam vary exponentially whereas Poisson's ratio remains constant. The problem is solved for both continuous and discontinuous cases. In each case, the governing equations and boundary conditions of the problem are reduced to an integral equation by the help of Fourier integral transform. In the continuous contact, the integral equation solved analytically and critical load that causes initial separation between the layer and the rigid foundation, separation distance and contact pressures are investigated for various non-homogeneity parameters that presents the change in the shear modulus and density and loadings. The singular integral equation in case of discontinuous contact is numerically solved by using corresponding Gauss–Chebyshev quadrature and an iterative scheme. The effect of non-homogeneity parameters and loading on the separation distance between the layer and the foundation and contact pressures are analyzed. All the results are shown in tables and figures. It is seen that increasing stiffness and decreasing density at the top of the layer reduce maximum pressures but increase separation distances. This study aims to fill the deficiency in the mechanical behavior of the coatings under gravity.

Evaluation Expression of the Caspase-3 and Caspase-9 Apoptotic Genes in Schizophrenia Patients

Dirican, Ebubekir; Özcan, Halil; Uzunçakmak, Sevgi Karabulut; Takım, Uğur

Objective: Apoptosis is programmed cell death that occurs by several pathways. Caspase-3 is induced by active caspase-9 via the intrinsic pathway. The aim of this research was to explore the expression of caspase-3 and caspase-9 in schizophrenia patients and healthy samples. Methods: RNA was isolated from the peripheral blood of 39 schizophrenia patients’ and healthy samples. After cDNA synthesis, real time PCR (RT-PCR) was used to analyse caspase-3 and caspase-9 gene expression. The severity of psychopathological symptoms of schizophrenia was evaluated using the Positive and Negative Symptoms Scale for schizophrenia (PANSS) and Clinical Global Impressions (CGI). Results: The expression of caspase-3 and caspase-9 genes was higher in schizophrenia patients than in healthy samples (p = 0.012, p = 0.002, respectively). The increase in caspase-3 gene expression was significant with being male, smoking and with a duration of less than 6 years (p = 0.047, p = 0.049, p = 0.034, respectively). On the other hand, the increase in caspase-9 gene expression was significant in patients who is smoke, have children, and are under 33 years old (p = 0.040, p = 0.043, p = 0.045, respectively). A significant positive correlation was detected between the caspase-3 and caspase-9 gene expression (r = 0.3218, p = 0.049). Conclusion: Our findings indicate that caspase-3 and caspase-9 gene expression may activate cell death mechanisms by intrinsic apoptotic genes. Furthermore, caspase-3 and caspase-9 may play essential roles in different ways in schizophrenia. Hence there is a need to further study the apoptotic mechanism with expanded patient populations.

Tourism and FDI-Growth Nexus in Upper-Middle Income Countries: Evidence from Static and Dynamic Panel Analyses

Soylu, Özgür Bayram; Adeleye, Bosede Ngozi; Okur, Fatih; Emikönel, Murat

This paper examines the role of tourism in foreign direct investment-growth relations in upper-middle-income countries. We deploy static and dynamic panel analysis to evaluate how tourism indicators influence the impact of FDI net inflows on growth using unbalanced panel data on 29 upper-middle-income countries from 2010 to 2019. The tourism indicators are receipts, arrivals, and expenditures. The results from static and dynamic analyses indicate that for the most part (1) FDI and tourism exert asymmetric effects on growth, (2) tourism indicators reduce the negative effect of FDI on growth, (4) trade openness is a positive and significant predictor of growth, and (5) domestic credit negatively contributes to growth. Deductively, results evidence that tourism indicators are critical drivers of economic growth in upper-middle-income countries. Overall, tourism receipts show the largest influence on FDI to spur the most appreciable impact on growth. Despite this, the fact that tourism indicators cannot eliminate the destructive impact of FDI on economic growth shows that tourism development policies should be based on a greener and more sustainable ground, taking into account the effects of the coronavirus.

Prospective technicians for elderly care are indispensable elements that should be included in the relevant system to meet the ever-increasing care needs of the aging world population and increase the quality of care. This research was conducted to evaluate the attitudes of students in the elderly care program at the associate degree toward the older adults and their willingness to provide care. The sample of this descriptive and cross-sectional study comprised 525 volunteer students in elderly care programs in five vocational schools of higher education located in northeastern Turkey between June 2020 and September 2020. Mean, standard deviation, number, percentage, independent t-test, and correlation analysis were used to evaluate the data. The study showed that the mean age of the students involved in the study was 20.3 ± 1.6. 77.7% of them were female, and 61.9% were in the first grade. Students’ willingness to care for older adults was found to be at a moderate level (36.3 ± 6.0). The students had a negative attitude (137.4 ± 26.7) about aging and elderliness. The willingness of male students to care for older adults was significantly higher (p <.05). Those who did not live with an older adult in the same house before had a more negative attitude toward them (p <.05). To get rid of personal and social stereotypes and have a positive attitude toward older adults, students should be provided to work in clinical environments that will allow them to spend more time with them.

Enhancing magnetic levitation and guidance force and weight efficiency of high-temperature superconducting maglev systems by using sliced bulk YBCO

Abdioglu, Murat; Ozturk, U. Kemal; Guner, Sait Baris; Ozturk, Mehmet; Mollahasanoglu, Hakki; Yanmaz, Ekrem

We aimed to enhance the magnetic force efficiency of Maglev systems without increasing total weight. For this aim, we divided YBCO bulks into three slices horizontally to utilize the YBCO-permanent magnetic guideway (PMG) interaction surface as much as possible. We used whole YBCO above PMGs with different magnetic pole directions (PMG-A and PMG-B) in two lying positions of transversal and longitudinal and investigated levitation and guidance force performances. It is determined that levitation and guidance forces by using YBCO in transversal lying mode are bigger compared to the longitudinal mode. For sliced YBCO, the maximum levitation force increased by 69% and 78%, while the guidance force enhancements are determined as 212% and 91%, compared to the whole YBCO above PMG-A and PMG-B, respectively. The levitation and guidance force density with respect to the total mass of unit a set of slices YBCO increased by 92% and 106%, respectively, compared to the whole YBCO above PMG-B in transversal mode. Since the higher levitation force and the lower total weight of the onboard unit are important parameters in point of the energy efficiency in Maglev and other levitation applications, the result of this study supplies useful data for the engineers and industrial partners.

Recent Insights into the Use of Antagonistic Yeasts for Sustainable Biomanagement of Postharvest Pathogenic and Mycotoxigenic Fungi in Fruits with Their Prevention Strategies against Mycotoxins

Oztekin, Sebahat; Dikmetas, Dilara Nur; Devecioglu, Dilara; Acar, Emine Gizem; Karbancioglu-Guler, Funda

Fungi-induced postharvest diseases are the leading causes of food loss and waste. In this context, fruit decay can be directly attributed to phytopathogenic and/or mycotoxin-producing fungi. The U.N. Sustainable Development Goals aim to end hunger by 2030 by improving food security, sustainable agriculture, and food production systems. Antagonistic yeasts are one of the methods presented to achieve these goals. Unlike physical and chemical methods, harnessing antagonistic yeasts as a biological method controls the decay caused by fungi and adsorbs and/or degrades mycotoxins sustainably. Therefore, antagonistic yeasts and their antifungal mechanisms have gained importance. Additionally, mycotoxins’ biodetoxification is carried out due to the occurrence of mycotoxin-producing fungal species in fruits. Combinations with processes and agents have been investigated to increase antagonistic yeasts’ efficiency. Therefore, this review provides a comprehensive summary of studies on preventing phytopathogenic and mycotoxigenic fungi and their mycotoxins in fruits, as well as biocontrolling and biodetoxification mechanisms.

AN EXAMINATION OF EMOTIONAL AND CREATIVE LEVELS AMONG TERTIARY STUDENTS IN TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL SPORTS

    Çingöz, Yunus Emre; Mavibaş, Muhammet

The primary objective of this research was to investigate the effect of emotional states on creativity levels tertiary students in team and individual sports. The study further aimed to discern the various emotional states and creativity levels prevalent among athletes, contingent on different variables. The participants comprised 302 athletes, 162 males and 140 females, who were all registered students in the Faculty of Sports Sciences at Bayburt University. In order to gather demographic data, the researchers constructed a “Personal Information Form”. The “Sports Emotion Scale”, developed by Urfa and Aşçı (2019), was utilized to assess the emotional states of the athletes within their respective sports. To evaluate their creativity levels in sports, the “Creativity Scale for Athletes”, constructed by Güngör et al. (2020), was utilized. Data analysis incorporated frequency analysis for determining the participants' demographic attributes, and descriptive tests for establishing the mean scores of both emotional states and creativity levels in sports. The independent t-tests were used to compare emotional and creativity levels based on gender and sport type. One-way ANOVA tests were used to compare emotional and creativity levels based on educational level and years of sports experience. Post-hoc comparisons were facilitated using Tukey tests to identify specific group differences. Lastly, multiple linear regression analysis was applied to scrutinize the impact of emotional states on creativity levels in sports. The research findings indicate that athletes participating in team sports demonstrated higher levels of enthusiasm and happiness, as determined by the sub-dimensions of the Sports Emotion Scale, when compared to athletes participating in individual sports. In addition, it was noted that an increase in feelings of unhappiness among athletes corresponded to a decrease in their levels of sports creativity. Conversely, a surge in enthusiasm was associated with heightened creativity levels within sports.

Exploring the Charge Transport of a Natural Eumelanin for Sustainable Technologies

Paulin, João V.; Bayram, Sinan; Graeff, Carlos F. O.; Bufon, Carlos C. B.

Eumelanin, the main quinone-based biomaterial of the melanin family of compounds, is emerging as a model for medical and sustainable electronic interfaces due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, and transducing abilities. The study utilizes current-voltage measurements and impedance/dielectric spectroscopy under a controlled hydration atmosphere to investigate the charge transport of eumelanin produced from the S. parvus BSB49 strain. We show no differences in the electrical response in highly hydrated conditions compared to the standard synthetic eumelanin. Hence, our findings provide the groundwork to assess the potential use of this natural eumelanin in sustainable organic (bio)electronic applications.

Characterization of Bee Bread Produced with Defined Starter Cultures Mimicking the Natural Fermentation Process

Poyraz, Fatmanur; Yalmanci, Dilara; İspirli, Hümeyra; Dertli, Enes

Bee bread is a product with unique properties for humans and bees that is produced through the fermentation of pollen in the honeycomb, mainly caused by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and yeast strains present in the environment. It is a rich source of nutrients such as proteins, polyphenols and vitamins. Despite the potential nutritional value of bee bread, it is consumed at low levels, as harvesting bee bread from the hives is costly and difficult. This study aimed to produce a standard bee bread by using different strains of the fructophilic lactic acid bacteria (FLAB) Lactobacillus kunkeei and the yeasts Starmeralla magnolia MP-2 and Zygosaccharomyces siamensis MP-14, previously isolated from bee products. In this context, bee bread was produced from pollen by solid-state fermentation using selected FLAB and yeast species, which were then compared with spontaneously developed and commercially available bee bread in terms of microbial stability, physicochemical properties, total phenolic component amounts, in vitro digestibility and amino acid profiles. As a result, it was determined that bee bread made from bee pollen fermented with starter cultures showed improved characteristics than commercial bee bread and was more advantageous in terms of absorption as well as production processes.
