- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ2Enhanced freshwater production in prism-type solar stills using a fresnel lens system with comprehensive energy-exergy and cost analysis
Ceviz, Mehmet Akif; Köksal, Hüseyin; Afshari, Faraz; Muratçobanoğlu, Burak
This study presents the development and performance evaluation of a novel prism-type solar still integrated with a Fresnel lens concentration system designed to concentrate solar radiation on an external spiral heat exchanger. Experimental investigations were conducted under two different saline water flow rates of 0.05 and 0.1 kg/min. The performance of system was comprehensively analyzed in terms of fresh water yield, thermal efficiency, exergy efficiency, and economic viability. The heated saline water and resultant vapor were directed into the prism-shaped condensation chamber, where condensation occurred efficiently. The experimental results demonstrated that lower saline water flow rates led to higher water temperatures and enhanced evaporation rates, thereby increasing freshwater productivity. In contrast, higher flow rates resulted in greater accumulation of saline water within the basin, reducing the evaporation rate and thus lowering overall productivity. The proposed design uniquely combines geometric enhancement via a prism-shaped condensation chamber with solar concentration through a Fresnel lens, enabling a dual-effect improvement in energy absorption and condensation efficiency, an approach not previously reported in the literature for solar desalination systems. The system achieved thermal and exergy efficiencies of 22.95 and 15.50%, respectively, at a saline water flow rate of 0.05 kg/min, producing 92 g of clean water in 60 min. Furthermore, the cost analysis conducted indicated a cost of $0.2546 per liter for this scenario.

- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ3An exergoeconomic analysis of a wastewater treatment plant: investigation and optimization of sludge drying—a case study
Dagci, O.; Tozlu, A.; Berber, A.
The primary parameters in wastewater treatment plant applications are pollutant removal in compliance with standards and energy costs. This study conducts exergy, exergoeconomic, and optimization analyses on the Konya Wastewater Treatment Plant to enhance its energy efficiency. All assessments of the plant were based on actual operational data. Numerical calculations were executed using Engineering Equation Solver software. Exergoeconomic analyses were performed using the Specific Cost Method, while optimization calculations employed the Net Present Value approach. Thermodynamic calculations revealed that the exergy efficiency of the biogas engine was 30.8%, which increased to 39.8% when integrated into a cogeneration system. The overall exergy efficiency of the plant was calculated to be 35.3%, which rose to 58.6% when stabilized sludge was utilized as fuel. During the optimization phase, various drying systems were evaluated, and a hybrid greenhouse-solar-panel drying system was identified as the optimal model. The analyses indicated that the total cost was minimized at the maximum dryness value (70%), suggesting that the greenhouse-type drying system could achieve regional conditions. Compared to thermal and solar energy systems, hybrid systems have been observed to offer significant advantages in first-year costs. Optimization studies reveal that hybrid systems provide 41% greater cost savings in initial investment and operational expenses compared to thermal systems, and 29% greater savings compared to solar energy systems. Meeting the system's energy demand with fossil fuels results in annual emissions of 76,850 tons of CO₂ and 1500 tons of harmful pollutants, equivalent to removing 19,000 cars from traffic or preserving 7300 hectares of forest. Significant soil and ecosystem degradation also occurs. The use of solar energy substantially reduces these environmental impacts, improving air quality and conserving natural resources.

Bayraktar, Bülent; Aslan, İsmail; Korkmaz, Serol; Parmaksız, Ayşe; Sait, Ahmet
Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of three commercial nucleic acid extraction kits (kit A, B and C) in isolating SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA from wastewater samples. Method: In this study, water samples were collected in March 2021 from three wastewater treatment plants located in different parts of Istanbul, and it was confirmed that they were negative for SARS-CoV-2. Different concentrations of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, previously inactivated at the BSL-3 laboratory of the Pendik Veterinary Control Institute, were added to the wastewater samples. RNA extraction and quantification were performed using commercial nucleic acid extraction kits and and RT-qPCR kit specific to SARS-CoV-2. Results: At the end of the study, it was determined that kit C yielded the highest total RNA and produced more consistent results, significantly outperforming the other two kits in terms of RNA yield and purity. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences in RNA concentrations (p < 0.05) and gene copy numbers (p < 0.01) between the kits, and kit C demonstrated superior linearity and reproducibility. Conclusion: According to the findings, although all three evaluated kits are suitable for detecting SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater samples, kit C provides the most efficient and reliable performance, especially for high-throughput studies. Additionally, this study highlights the importance of selecting appropriate nucleic acid extraction methods for wastewater surveillance, which serves as an early warning system for outbreaks that threaten public health.

Guclu, Tamer; Cuce, Pinar Mert; Cuce, Erdem
Increasing environmental pollution on a global scale and the rapid depletion of traditional energy sources have led scientists to search for clean and renewable energy sources. Among renewable energy sources, solar energy stands out as a clean, energy-efficient and abundant source. There are many methods of obtaining thermal and electrical energy from solar energy. Among these methods, solar water collectors are widely used throughout the world, thanks to their wide range of applications, from domestic hot water supply and space heating applications to industrial process heat. The main purpose of this study is to examine solar water collector systems in a general framework. Solar water collector types are introduced in detail, their performance is evaluated, and especially CFD studies on their thermal efficiency are presented. Solar water collector systems were examined comparatively in terms of energy efficiency and the parameters affecting their thermal performance were observed. As a general acceptance, evacuated-tube solar water collectors are more efficient than flat-plate collectors. Compound parabolic collectors are preferred in higher-temperature applications. Thermal efficiency can be increased by using nanofluids or hybrid systems.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Artificial neural network modelling of reactive red 45 Azo dye removal by peroxi-electrocoagulation
Bayar, S.; Erdoğan, M.; Taşdemir, A.; Kaleli, A.; Paloluoglu, C.
In the present study, the Peroxi-electrocoagulation process was employed to remove chemical oxygen demand and the decolorization of reactive red 45 dye wastewater. This process offers several advantages, including the oxidation of dye molecules by hydroxyl radicals and coagulation through iron hydroxide precipitation. The reactor was equipped with six iron electrodes, providing a total surface area of 546 cm2. The effects of applied current (0.3–0.18 A), hydrogen peroxide concentration (100–700 mg/L), initial pH (2.5–5.0), and dye concentration (100–500 mg/L) on chemical oxygen demand and color removal were investigated. Optimum operational conditions were determined to be applied current of 0.150 (corresponding to current density of 0.27 mA/cm2), pH of 3.0, H2O2 concentration of 600 mg/L, and dye concentration of 200 mg/L. Under these conditions, COD and color efficiencies reached 83% and > 99%, respectively. The specific energy consumption under optimal conditions was 33.4 kWh/kg COD with 82.8% COD removal. The findings indicate that increasing the applied current and H2O2 concentration enhances removal performance up to a certain threshold, beyond which no significant improvement is observed. This suggests that the availability of electrogenerated reagents governs the overall reaction efficiency. Additionally, an artificial neural network model was developed to predict COD and color removal efficiencies. The network employed a 4:10:2 architecture and was trained using a backpropagation algorithm. Input variables included applied current, pH, H2O2 concentration, and dye concentration. The model exhibited high predictive accuracy, with R2 of 0.9782 for COD removal and 0.9579 for Color removal, confirming the effectiveness of the ANN in modeling.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Decolorization of acid yellow 17 by ozonation and peroxone (O3/H2O2) process
Cengiz, Ibrahim
In this study, the decolorization of Acid Yellow 17, a mono azo dye with a wide range of applications such as in food, textiles, personal care products, and household cleaning products, was investigated in aqueous solutions using ozonation and peroxone processes. The effects of ozone gas flow rate (150, 200, and 250 L/h), ozone gas concentration (5.5, 11, and 16.5 g/m3), initial dye concentration (100, 200, and 300 mg/L), and hydrogen peroxide concentration (25, 50 and 62.5 mg/L) on decolorization in the batch bubble reactor were investigated. When the ozone gas flow rate was increased from 150 L/h to 200 L/h in the ozonation process, the removal efficiency increased from 70% to 80.2%. At gas flow rates above 200 L/h, removal was negatively affected. The removal efficiency increased with increasing ozone gas concentration, and at the end of the 45-minute reaction time, a removal efficiency of 98% was achieved at an ozone gas concentration of 16 g/m3. The increase in initial dye concentrations decreases the removal efficiency due to the increase in the amount of pollutant per unit ozone molecule. In the peroxane process, the effect of hydrogen peroxide on color removal was limited. It was determined that the ozonation process was more effective for the removal of Acid Yellow 17 from aqueous solutions.

Kurt, Mehmet Ali; Yalçın, Sezen; Güler, Cüneyt; Güven, Onur; Yıldırım, Ümit
Wetlands are transitional between terrestrial and aquatic environments and have essential ecological functions. Unfortunately, due to anthropogenic activities and climate change, the area covered by wetlands is gradually decreasing worldwide, causing deterioration and loss of their critical and vital ecological functions. One of these degraded wetlands is the Hürmetçi Sazlığı, a nationally important wetland located in the Kayseri Province of Turkey. This study aims to determine the spatial and vertical (depth profile) distribution and the sources of the potentially toxic elements (PTEs) As, Cd, Pb, and Zn in the soils around the Hürmetçi Sazlığı Wetland (HSW) and to evaluate environmental risk factors using various soil quality indicators. According to the results obtained, it was determined that some parts of the wetland soils were significantly polluted in terms of As, Cd, Pb, and Zn. The concentrations (in mg/kg) of these PTEs in the soil around the wetland ranged between 9.12 and 273.9 for As, 0.38 and 1119.46 for Cd, 3.59 and 1807.66 for Pb, and 41.68 and 77,287.5 for Zn. Several soil quality indicators, including the Enrichment Factor (EF), Contamination Factor (CF), Ecological Risk Index (ERI), and Potential Ecological Risk Index (RI), were calculated to determine the quality and pollution levels of the collected soil samples. According to the calculated RI values, 70 out of 77 sites sampled in the area around the HSW are in the “High Risk” class in terms of all studied PTEs. The soil profile samples indicated that the topsoil (0–50 cm) was heavily contaminated by all PTEs, particularly near a zinc processing plant established in 1976. In addition, parts of the wetland further away from the Zn processing plant were also affected by arsenic pollution from geogenic sources, which can be associated with Plio-Quaternary volcanic activity in the region.

Metal nanoparticles that are widely studied in optoelectronics, catalysis, medicine, and sensors offer remarkable optical and electronic properties. To address the cost and environmental concerns associated with their synthesis, this study employs an environmentally friendly method using Laureus nobilis extract to produce silver and zinc nanoparticles, which are prominent in nanotechnology. This study includes investigations of factors such as reaction time, AgNO3/laurel ratio, Zn(Ac)2 H2O/laurel ratio and temperature in nanoparticle biosynthesis to optimize the process. The next stage was set to evaluate the photocatalytic performance of these nanoparticles, specifically against the methylene blue dye under dark and UV light conditions. Parameters such as pollutant decomposition, degradation rate, catalyst stability, and nanoparticle recovery were analysed. Structural characterization of the obtained nanoparticles was performed using UV-Vis, FTIR, SEM, and XRD techniques. The photocatalytic results showed significant degradation percentages for LB-AgNP (silver nanoparticles synthesized with Laureus nobilis extract) (97.5%) and LB-ZnNP (zinc nanoparticles synthesized with Laureus nobilis extract) (90.9%). LB-ZnNP showed superior performance. Therefore, LB-AgNP and LB-ZnNP are promising photocatalysts for water purification and the elimination of toxic organic pollutants.

Yalçın Çelik, Beste; Nuhoğlu, Alper; Kul, Sinan; İrdemez, Şahset
Vinyl acetate is a volatile organic compound widely used in the chemical industry, and there is a need for effective and economic removal of this volatile organic compound from wastewater and waste gases in chemical industries. This study aims to determine the biological treatability of vinyl acetate both under aerobic and anoxic conditions using mixed cultures obtained from a wastewater treatment plant. Considering the previous studies in the literature, testing the biodegradability of vinyl acetate under both aerobic and anoxic conditions, together with evaluating the effect of other mechanisms, such as adsorption and volatilization, on the removal of vinyl acetate, can be regarded as the prominent part of this study. Wastewater containing artificially prepared vinyl acetate was treated in a batch bioreactor, and performance and kinetic constants were investigated. Aerobic treatment under batch conditions conformed to the Haldane biokinetic equation, and the biokinetic constants of μmax, Ks, and Ki were calculated as 0.66 h−1, 19.67 mg L−1 and 50.56 mg L−1, respectively. Anoxic treatment under batch conditions conformed to the Monod biokinetic equation, and the biokinetic constants of μmax and Ks were calculated as 0.31 h−1 and 33.88 mg L−1, respectively. Experiments revealed that vinyl acetate was not volatile, and its adsorption and biological treatment performances were 28% and 72%, respectively. The mixed culture had a very high performance for removing vinyl acetate under batch operating conditions. The primary mechanism of vinyl acetate removal was found to be biological treatment.

Yıldırım, Ümit; Guler, Cuneyt; Kurt, Mehmet Ali; Güven, Onur; Ece, Fatma
Kıyı akiferlerinin su kalitesi ve miktarı değişen iklim koşulları ve artan antropojenik faaliyetler nedeniyle her geçen gün olumsuz yönde daha fazla etkilenmektedir. Bu çalışma, Erdemli Kıyı Akiferi’nin (EKA) su kalitesinin ve kirletici unsurlarının belirlenmesi amacıyla yapılmıştır. Çalışma kapsamında, Ağustos 2020’de yeraltı suyu örneklemesi yapılarak suların fiziksel ve kimyasal özellikleri belirlenmiştir. Elde edilen sonuçlar Dünya Sağlık Örgütü (WHO) içme suyu standartlarına göre değerlendirilmiştir.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2023Scopus SJRQ3Socio-economic determinants of environmental degradation: Empirical evidence for the Environmental Kuznets Curve
Gültekin, Ömer Faruk; Sayar, Ramazan; Ari, Yllmaz Onur
The aim of the paper is to examine socio-economic determinants of environmental degradation. The empirical study employs quantile regression which enables separate predictions for different levels of the dependent variable to be made. This study investigated 62 countries from low, middle and some high income countries for 1995-2019. The Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) is verified for the aforemented countries in analyzing the relationship between economic growth and carbon emissions using quantile regression. The study also revealed that the schooling rate has a pollution-increasing effect. In addition to the reducing effects of trade openness, democracy, and economic freedom variables on environmental degradation, the opposite effect of life expectancy at birth is observed, increasing environmental degradation. In this context, this paper concluded that the EKC hypothesis is not supported. The government should encourage pollution-reducing policies in low and middle income countries.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Scopus SJRQ1Evaluation of Groundwater Vulnerability in the Upper Kelkit Valley (Northeastern Turkey) Using DRASTIC and AHP-DRASTICLu Models
Yıldırım, Ümit
This study aimed to investigate groundwater vulnerability to pollution in the Upper Kelkit Valley (NE Turkey). For this purpose, vulnerability index maps were created using the generic DRASTIC and AHP-DRASTICLu models. The latter model was suggested by adding a parameter to the DRASTIC model and weighting its parameters with the analytical hierarchy process with the GIS technique. The results showed that areas with high and very high vulnerabilities are concentrated around the Kelkit Stream, which flows from east to west in the central part of the study area. In contrast, areas with low and very low vulnerability classes are located in the northern and southern parts of the study area. To validate the model results, a physicochemical characterization of groundwater samples and their corresponding vulnerability index values were statistically compared using the Spearman correlation method. In addition, the single-parameter sensitivity method was applied to analyze the models’ sensitivities. Results revealed a stronger correlation between the vulnerability index values of the AHP-DRASTICLu model (compared to the DRASTIC model) in terms of sulfate (R2 = 0.75) and chloride (R2 = 0.76), while there was a slightly weaker correlation for the electrical conductivity (R2 = 0.65) values of the groundwater samples. Sensitivity analysis indicated that the vadose zone, aquifer media, and land use are the most influential parameters responsible for the highest variation in the vulnerability index. Generally speaking, the results indicated that the AHP-DRASTICLu model performs better than the DRASTIC model for investigating groundwater vulnerability to pollution in the Upper Kelkit Valley.

Bacaksız, Efsun; Opan, Mücahit; Kara Dilek, Zuhal Elif; Karadeniz, Murat
In a multi-reservoir system, the stochastic nature of basin data resulting from rainfall introduces risk into water management operations. Effective management that accounts for these risks can obtain maximum benefits from the system. This study presents a description of a multi-reservoir water resources system with hydroelectric power plants, utilizing the energy optimization model developed by OPAN in 2007. The model was applied to reservoirs located successively on the Lower Kızılırmak River in the Kızılırmak Basin, with the objective function being the maximization of firm power by using drought period inflows and total energy by using monthly average inflows. The study considered three scenarios: deterministic, probabilistic, and risky (critical cases), with probabilities of inflows from the basin being determined for the latter. Monthly inflows with determined probabilities were used to obtain data for the risky case. Optimum operating levels were determined based on this data to maximize firm power and total energy. According to the operating levels, the reservoir with the largest useful volume manages the operation. The values obtained from the optimization were then used in multivariate regression analysis using the Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS), a statistical analysis program. The analysis explored the effects of monthly operating levels in the reservoirs, the amount of inflow released from the spillway, the amount of inflow released for energy production, the monthly average inflow to the reservoirs, and firm power values on energy production.
