Küresel iklim değişikliğine bağlı artan sıcaklıklar, arı aktivite desenlerini ve bitkilerin tozlaşma verimliliğini önemli ölçüde etkilemektedir. Bu çalışmada, ortam sıcaklığının çilek (Fragaria × ananassa) tarlalarındaki bal arıları (Apis mellifera) ve yabani polinatör arı türlerinin aktivitesi üzerindeki etkisi araştırılmıştır. Gözlemler, 12-22°C arasındaki sıcaklık aralıklarında farklı arı türlerinin çiçekleri ziyaret sıklıkları kaydedilerek yapılmıştır. Bulgular, A. mellifera'nın tüm sıcaklık aralıklarında gözlendiğini ve aktivite seviyesinin sıcaklık arttıkça önemli ölçüde arttığını göstermektedir.

This study aims to evaluate the association of the enteral nutrition support on mortality, biochemical parameters, and health markers in geriatric patients with COVID-19 treated in intensive care units (ICUs). A retrospective cohort analysis was conducted on 226 patients aged 60 years and older admitted to the COVID-19 adult ICU of Yıldırım Beyazıt University Training and Research Hospital in 2021. Demographics, ICU stay characteristics, biochemical parameters, and nutrition therapy details were collected from hospital records. Patients receiving enteral nutrition were categorized by product type (e.g., diabetic, immunonutrition, glutamine-containing, etc.), and their association on mortality, biochemical markers, and ICU outcomes were evaluated. The mortality rate was 50.4%, with an mean ICU stay of 9.63±6.50 days. Most patients (90.3%) had chronic conditions. Nutrition therapy was administered to 138 patients using various products. Immunonutrition products were associated with improved albumin levels and reduced mortality (p<0.05). Chronic conditions significantly increased mortality risk and ICU stay duration (p<0.05). Multivariate analysis revealed that longer ICU stays and the presence of chronic diseases independently reduced survival probability. Enteral nutrition support, particularly immunonutrition, may benefit geriatric ICU patients with COVID-19 by improving biochemical parameters and reducing mortality risk. Although patients receiving diabetic and glutamine-enriched products have a higher incidence of pressure ulcers, it should be considered that such products are likely to have been used in higher-risk patients.

Bayraktar, Bülent; Tekce, Emre; Aydemir, Seyma; Erdoğan, Yaşar; Aksakal, Vecihi; Ürüsan, Hılal; Kotan, Gökşad Cemil
This study was conducted using a Cross-Sectional Observational Design to determine the effects of current managerial practices applied in commercial dairy cattle farms in Çorum Province on calf survival. The main material of the study consisted of 120 active farms, which represent the general structure of the dairy cattle sector in the region. Data were collected via face-to-face surveys, and the scale’s reliability was confirmed (Cronbach’s Alpha: 0.742) and suitability for Factor Analysis (KMO: 0.710) was verified. The results showed that while 88.33% of the farmers were members of a cooperative/union and 57.50% reported timely colostrum administration (within the critical <4 hours), these positive indicators contrasted sharply with low biosecurity and poor practical application. Specifically, calf mortality was high (42.50% of farms reported mortality rates >5%), mainly due to diarrhea and pneumonia, with 65.83% of deaths occurring in the first 30 days. Critical management deficiencies included uncontrolled colostrum feeding (85.00% via suckling, risking failure of passive transfer), severe biosecurity breaches (85.83% of calves housed with adult animals), and delayed introduction of solid feed. In conclusion, the primary challenge in Çorum is not lack of institutional access or basic knowledge, but rather a critical disconnection between theoretical knowledge and practical management implementation. To improve calf survival, management strategies should shift from traditional suckling to controlled colostrum protocols and emphasize the transition from group housing to individual calf hutches to ensure biosecurity.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2026Investigation of Structural Characteristics and Flock Management Practices of Sheep Breeding Farms: The Alaca District of Çorum Province Example
Bayraktar, Bülent; Aydemir, Seyma; Kotan, Gökşad Cemil; Küçük, Gülben
The aim of this study is to comprehensively examine the structural characteristics and herd management practices of sheep farms in Alaca district of Çorum province and to reveal their current status through a survey conducted on 130 sheep farms. The study revealed that the breeder population in the sector is concentrated in young (18-30 years old) and middle-aged (31-40 years old), with the younger generation actively participating in the sector. The vast majority of breeders view livestock farming as their primary source of income, with a predominant portion of their farms focusing on slaughter and sacrificial animal husbandry. While basic facilities such as resting areas, lighting, and ventilation are largely adequate, the lack of specialized enclosures necessary for modern herd management, such as sick animal pens (48.46%), milking parlors (86.92%), and shearing areas (100.00%), is striking. In terms of herd management practices, the most common age for first mating for females was 15 months. Rams are kept in the flock only during the breeding season in the majority of farms, and the most frequently used breeding method is reported to be free-breeding (pen breeding/pasture breeding). Underweight birth was identified as the primary cause of lamb mortality at 46.92%. Although the vast majority of farms regularly administer official vaccinations, only a small percentage conduct regular hoof checks and care, highlighting deficiencies in preventative herd protection practices. Furthermore, although almost all breeders use village communal pastures or highland pastures, 90.00% of breeders believe pastures are inadequate, primarily attributing this inadequacy to the small size of pasture areas. In conclusion, despite its young and well-organized Sheep sector in Çorum, it exhibits significant deficiencies in modern herd management infrastructure and preventative herd protection practices, and faces a critical pasture availability problem. Therefore, to ensure sustainability and enhance competitiveness, it is crucial for local governments to encourage pasture improvement and forage production, as well as expand grant/support mechanisms for the development of modern shelter infrastructure.

Bayraktar, Bülent; Tekce, Emre; Aydemir, Seyma; Kotan, Gökşad Cemil; Kebapcı, Eren
This study examined the general structure of cattle farming operations enterprises in the central district of Çorum city center and the basic care and feeding practices of breeders based on a survey conducted on 130 cattle enterprises between May and June 2023. Cattle enterprises in Çorum city center are generally small to medium-sized; 43.08% of these operations have a capacity of 11-30 animals, while 71.54% are owned by the breeders themselves. Breeders in these operations are predominantly male (82.31%), with the largest age group being between 31 and 40 years old, at 36.15%. Livestock farming is the population source of income for 83.85% of breeders, and their education levels are increasing, with 32.31% of breeders now high school graduates. Breeders combine family knowledge with information from official institutions and organizations as a source of knowledge and experience, and 58.46% rely on experience in their livestock feeding decisions. Animals are generally fed twice a day, with a 90% mix of roughage and concentrate, while automatic waterers (48.46%) are preferred for providing drinking water. However, since 67.69% of concentrate needs are met externally, there is external dependency, and 81.54% of breeders face a pasture shortage. 60.77% of the barns are located adjacent to or below the house, and reinforced concrete (67.69%) is used as the construction material. Regarding cleaning practices, straw (73.85%) is the most preferred bedding material in the barns, general cleaning is done 1-3 times a year, and manure is removed manually and deposited in the open areas (86.15%). 86.15% of breeders are members of breeder associations, and the most frequently received support is pedigree and preliminary pedigree support (89.23%). 68.46% of enterprises maintain an animal registration system. As a result, cattle enterprises in Çorum have a structure that combines traditional methods with modern practices. The breeders' high organizational awareness and propensity for record keeping indicate that the sector has potential for future growth. However, further improvements are needed in areas such as the use of professional nutrition resources and manure management.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Impact of Phytobiotic Supplementation Administered in Drinking Water on Meat Quality in Heat-Stressed Broilers
Kaya, Hacer; Kamiloğlu, Aybike
This study evaluated the effects of a phytobiotic additive, hawthorn fruit extract (HFE), administered via drinking water on meat quality of broilers subjected to heat stress (HS). A total of 300 one-day-old broiler chicks were distributed into six experimental groups according to a 2×3 factorial design after a one-week acclimation period, with five replicates of 10 chicks each. Chicks had ad libitum access to feed and water for the duration of the 42-day trial and were exposed to a 24-hour lighting program. HS decreased the b* color value of breast meat while increasing L* and a* values and pH of thigh meat. Cooking loss (CL) of both breast and thigh meat was reduced, whereas water-holding capacity (WHC) remained unaffected. HS did not significantly alter thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), total saturated fatty acids (ΣSFA), or total unsaturated fatty acids (ΣUFA), but decreased monounsaturated fatty acids (ΣMUFA) and increased emulsion stability (ES) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (ΣPUFA). Adding HFE to the drinking water did not influence breast meat pH or color intensity, but WHC improved in breast meat with 0.2 mL/L HFE and in thigh meat at both HFE concentrations. The 0.4 mL/L HFE dose increased ΣSFA and decreased ΣUFA and ΣPUFA levels, while ΣMUFA decreased at both HFE concentrations. Overall, HFE supplementation mitigated several adverse effects of HS, notably enhancing ES and reducing redness of thigh meat. These findings suggest that HFE can be an effective phytobiotic strategy to improve meat quality in broilers under thermal stress conditions.

In this study, the ethanol extract of dried Micromeria fruticosa (L.) Druce, commercially sourced from the Tortum Valley (Erzurum Province), was comprehensively analysed to evaluate its bioactive potential. Considering that geographical origin and botanical differences significantly influence phytochemical composition and biological activity, the use of locally sourced commercial samples provides valuable data for plant standardisation and comparative studies. The total antioxidant activity of the extract was determined as 8.84±0.10, 4.96 ±0.05, 34.64 ±0.69, and 18.27 ±0.11 mg TE/g dry weight by DPPH, FRAP, CUPRAC, and ABTS assays, respectively. The total phenolic content was 26.25 mg GAE/g dry weight, and LC-MS/MS analysis revealed a high quinic acid content (93.395 mg/g). ICP-MS analysis showed high levels of essential minerals (Na, Mg, K, Ca, Fe, and Al), while toxic elements such as Cd, Te, and Tl were below the limit of detection, and Pb and Ba were present at very low concentrations. Additionally, the extract significantly reduced A549 lung cancer cell viability in a dose-dependent manner. Overall, Tortum Valley–derived M. fruticosa represents a promising natural bioactive source, and this study highlights the impact of local botanical and environmental variations on the biological activity of the same plant species.

Kaya, Yasemin; İspirli, Hümeyra; Bozkurt, Fatih; Sağdıç, Osman; Şengül, Mustafa; Dertli, Enes
BACKGROUND: One of the major contributors to postharvest losses in tomatoes is the development of infectious mold diseases. In this study, four distinct biodegradable film formulations were developed incorporating postbiotics derived from Lactiplantibacillus plantarum Y48 and the polysaccharide alternan. The formulations included alternan, sodium alginate and glycerol (AAG), alternan, postbiotic, sodium alginate and glycerol (APAG), postbiotic, sodium alginate and glycerol (PAG), and sodium alginate and glycerol (AG) as a control. The films were characterized in terms of their physical, mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties. To assess antifungal efficacy, tomatoes artificially inoculated with Alternaria alternata were coated with each film and stored at ambient temperature for 8 days. RESULTS: The incorporation of alternan and postbiotics enhanced both the mechanical strength and thermal stability of the films. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) analysis confirmed the successful integration of the bioactive components into the polymer matrix. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging revealed that postbiotic addition contributed to a rougher and more rigid surface morphology, while alternan improved the structural cohesion of the films. All film formulations exhibited significant inhibitory effects against A. alternata, with the PAG formulation demonstrating the most pronounced antifungal activity. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that the PAG film, enriched with postbiotics, represents a promising biocontrol strategy for mitigating fungal spoilage in tomatoes. In conclusion, this study underscores the potential of combining postbiotics and alternan for the development of active, biodegradable edible films with antifungal functionality for postharvest preservation.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ4Climate-driven synchronization of honey bee flight activity and plant phenology in Türkiye: development of a Beekeeping Climate Suitability Index (BCSI)
Erdoğan, Yaşar; Erdoğan, Ümmügülsüm
Honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) provide essential pollination services that depend on the temporal synchronization between flight activity and plant flowering phenology, both strongly influenced by climatic conditions. However, this relationship remains insufficiently quantified at large spatial and temporal scales. In this study, we quantified climate-driven honey bee flight activity and its alignment with flowering phenology of major nectar plants in Türkiye using ERA5-Land data for the period 1981–2023. Suitable flight days were defined based on temperature (≥12°C) and precipitation (0 mm), and seasonal suitability was evaluated at a monthly scale. A composite Beekeeping Climate Suitability Index (BCSI) was developed by integrating flight activity, flowering overlap and nectar flow window. The number of suitable flight periods ranged between 4 and 7 months (mean ≈5.5), indicating substantial interannual variability. Flight flowering synchrony was low for early-spring species (23–35%) but reached 100% for summer species. BCSI values ranged from 0.44 to 1.00, capturing variability in climatic suitability for beekeeping. These findings demonstrate that climatic variability plays a decisive role in shaping bee plant interactions and provide a quantitative basis for climate-informed beekeeping management.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1Ecological and nutritional analysis of artificial intelligence-based sustainable dietary models
Köktürk, Seda Nur; Yardımcı, Hülya
Growing concerns over environmental sustainability and health have increased the demand for sustainable diets. Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) offer new opportunities for diet planning. Evaluating the nutritional adequacy and environmental impact of AI-generated sustainable diets is essential. This study aimed to compare the nutritional quality and ecological footprints of sustainable diets created by four popular AI tools (Gemini, Copilot, ChatGPT, and Grok). Each AI tool generated a sustainable diet plan for a healthy adult woman. Diets were evaluated for energy, nutrient content, antioxidant capacity, glycemic index, protein quality, fatty acid profiles, Healthy Eating Index-2015 scores, and ecological footprints. All diets showed low ecological footprints but did not meet energy targets (1800 kcal/day). Gemini had the most sustainable composition. Vitamin B12 was consistently below recommended levels in diets from Gemini, Copilot, and ChatGPT. All diets had adequate carbohydrate, protein, fat quality, and overall diet quality. Carbon footprint associated with protein, energy from protein, cholesterol, pyridoxine, folate, and vitamin C. Water footprint was linked to multiple nutrients, and fruits, meat, poultry, and fish; vegetable intake correlated with carbon footprint. AI-assisted diets have potential for sustainability but nutritional completeness concerns remain, especially for vulnerable groups. Further studies comparing AI and dietitian plans are needed to assess long-term effects.

Kotan, Gökşad Cemil; Aydemir, Şeyma; Bayraktar, Bülent
This study investigated the responses of novel adipokines (irisin, spexin, visfatin), an endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress marker (GRP78), and traditional metabolic parameters (non-esterified fatty acids (NEFAs), beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA), urea, albumin, globulin, total cholesterol) in 360 healthy Brown Swiss dairy cattle. The animals were categorized into 18 subgroups based on pregnancy stages (early, mid, dry), lactation stages (early, mid, late), and body condition scores (BCSs). Serum analyses were performed using ELISA and spectrophotometric methods. Interactions between physiological stages and BCS were highly significant for all measured parameters (p<0.001). Results showed that mean serum levels of spexin (ranging from 14.02 to 36.04 pg mL−1) and irisin increased as pregnancy and lactation progressed. Visfatin levels exhibited a significant increase specifically during the gestation period, peaking during the dry period (24.09 ng mL−1), and maintained a significant increasing trend as lactation progressed toward the late stage (Tables 2, 4). Conversely, GRP78 (peaking at 0.46 ng mL−1), NEFA (peaking at 0.52 mmol L−1), and urea levels peaked during the dry period and early lactation, subsequently decreasing as metabolic stability was achieved. Notably, during the dry period, stress markers rose despite declining albumin and globulin levels (p<0.05). These data indicate that the dry period and early lactation are the most critical phases for metabolic and cellular stress, characterized by lower spexin and elevated GRP78 and NEFA concentrations. The later rise in irisin and visfatin, while BHBA remained within physiological limits, confirms successful metabolic adaptation (p<0.001). In conclusion, the integrated evaluation of these novel biomarkers is anticipated to provide significant contributions to protective strategies and metabolic management in dairy cattle.

Kotan, Gökşad Cemil; Bayraktar, Bülent
Background: This study investigated the effects of dietary graviola (Annona muricata L.) oil extract (GOE) (supplemented at 200, 400, and 600 mg/kg) on the growth performance and circadian rhythm profiles of adipokine, cardiac, and mitochondrial function biomarkers in 48 male Anatolian Merino lambs (2.5 months old). Methods: Lambs were assigned to a control group (G0) or supplementation groups (G200, G400, G600 mg/kg) for a 60-day trial (70 days total). The study was conducted under a 12-h light/12-h dark cycle to ensure controlled environmental conditions. To analyze circadian profiles, blood samples were collected on days 0, 15, 30, 45, and 60 at four time points (07:00, 13:00, 19:00, and 01:00). Serum levels of Apelin, cTnI, BMAL1, MOTS-c, and BMCP1 were measured by ELISA. Data were analyzed using GLM Multivariate analysis (p < 0.05). Results: Key findings showed the G400 dose resulted in the most effective linear increase in live weight and live weight gain by day 60, and had a significant overall effect on live weight (p < 0.05). The G200 dose significantly improved the feed conversion ratio (p < 0.05), while feed consumption was unaffected (p > 0.05). Regarding biomarkers on day 60, the G400 dose effectively modulated BMAL1, MOTS-c, and BMCP1 (peak at 19:00). The G600 dose yielded the best results for Apelin (peak at 19:00) and cTnI (peaks at 13:00 and 07:00). Conclusions: In conclusion, GOE at a dose of 400 mg/kg (G400) not only optimizes fattening performance in Anatolian Merino lambs but also supports metabolic homeostasis by modulating adipokine levels, cardiac function, and mitochondrial biogenesis processes in a manner consistent with the circadian rhythm. These findings demonstrate that the G400 dose is a safe and effective phytogenic strategy for improving animal health and production efficiency.

Vitamin C equivalency, the cytotoxicity on murine macrophage cells, and the virucidal and antiviral activities of maca (Lepidium meyenii) powder on murine norovirus (MNV) as a norovirus surrogate for human as a foodborne pathogen were studied. The antioxidant capacity of the maca was determined by MTT assay as vitamin C equivalency (VCEAC). The 50% cytotoxic concentration (CC50) was calculated with the linearity of maca concentrations-cell viability. The activities of maca against the virus was determined as the 50% tissue culture infective dose with Spearman–Karber method. The VCEAC of maca linearly increased with the concentration. The non-cytotoxic concentrations of maca were measured on murine macrophage with a CC50 of 5.77 mg/mL and a CC80 of 1.28 mg/mL. As maca reduced the virus titration based on contact time in the virucidal assay in several conditions, it did not significantly inhibit MNV on three infectivity pathways of host cell at non-cytotoxic concentrations of maca. The result of this first study presented that despite its ineffective in the treatment and prophylaxis of norovirus infection, maca might be an alternative food additive and preservative against human norovirus as an important foodborne pathogen causing outbreaks worldwide. © Los autores. - MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1A Hybrid Deep Learning–Fuzzy–Genetic Framework for Climate-Resilient Agricultural Investment and Resource Allocation Under Carbon Market Uncertainty
Erdogdu, Aylin; Dayi, Faruk; Yildiz, Ferah; Esmer, Yusuf; Ganji, Farshad
Climate variability, environmental uncertainty, and carbon-market dynamics increasingly challenge agricultural investment and resource allocation decisions worldwide. This study proposes an integrated hybrid decision-support framework combining Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) deep learning, Interval Type-2 Fuzzy Logic Systems, and Genetic Algorithms to support climate-resilient agricultural investment analysis under uncertainty. The framework integrates predictive modeling, uncertainty representation, and multi-objective optimization within a unified computational architecture. The empirical analysis was conducted using agricultural, climate, and carbon-market datasets covering Europe, Asia, and Africa over the 2010–2025 period. Agricultural productivity indicators, commodity price variables, climate-risk parameters, and carbon-market data were integrated into the modeling process. LSTM models were employed to analyze temporal agricultural and climate-related dynamics, while Interval Type-2 fuzzy systems were used to represent ambiguity associated with environmental and market uncertainty. Genetic Algorithms were subsequently applied to optimize investment allocation under conflicting objectives related to profitability, sustainability, and risk. The findings suggest that the proposed hybrid framework may improve adaptive investment evaluation and optimization performance under uncertain climate conditions relative to standalone computational approaches within the scope of the analyzed datasets. The results further highlight the importance of integrating predictive analytics, uncertainty modeling, and sustainability-oriented optimization within agricultural decision-support systems. However, the framework should be interpreted as a climate-resilient decision-support architecture rather than a universally deterministic forecasting mechanism. Overall, the study contributes to the emerging literature on agricultural sustainability and climate-resilient investment by presenting a transparent and uncertainty-aware computational framework under evolving environmental and carbon-market conditions.

Erdoğan, Yaşar; Erdoğan, Ümmügülsüm
Aim of study: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a phenolic-standardized flower extract from Crataegus orientalis Pall. on honey bee colony development and end-of-season honey yield under field conditions, and to assess its lasting colony-level effects. Area of study: The study was conducted during the 2025 beekeeping season at the apiary of Bayburt University Beekeeping Application and Research Center, located in northeastern Türkiye. Material and methods: Twenty-four initially balanced honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) colonies were randomly assigned to four groups (n = 6): a control group receiving 1:1 sucrose:water syrup and three treatment groups receiving 50, 100, or 200 mg GAE L⁻¹ of phenolic-standardized Crataegus orientalis flower extract. Colonies were fed daily for 21 days in early spring and monitored at seven time points (T0–T6) from mid-May to late August. Colony development was assessed using brood area (cm²) and number of frames with bees, while hive-front dead bees were recorded as a safety indicator. Net honey yield was determined at the end of the season. Main results: Daily syrup consumption did not differ among groups (P > 0.05), whereas daily phenolic intake increased in a dose-dependent manner (P < 0.05). Brood area increased significantly with dose and was generally higher in the high-dose group than in the control group throughout the season (P < 0.001). No significant differences were observed among groups for seasonal averages of frames with bees or mortality index; however, a significant treatment × time interaction was detected for frames with bees. Net honey yield was significantly higher in the high-dose group compared to the control group (P < 0.01). Research highlights: Short-term early spring supplementation with phenolic-standardized Crataegus orientalis flower extract supported brood development without increasing adult bee mortality. This early developmental advantage resulted in a measurable improvement in end-of-season honey yield under field conditions.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ2Nutrient composition of some edible wild plants with high nutritional value in Eastern Türkiye
Bakacak, Mustafa; Gul, Volkan
The demand for edible wild plants for their health and high nutritional content has increased dramatically worldwide. Although some wild plant species are eaten as vegetables, information on their nutritional content is limited. This study provides interesting, useful data (moisture, dry matter, ash, organic matter, protein, and mineral content) on the nutritional value of ten wild plant species traditionally consumed in the eastern Anatolia region of Türkiye. These species are Arum rupicola var. virescens, Allium vineale, Rumex crispus, Satureja hortensis, Scorzonera mollis subsp. szowitzii, Eremurus spectabilis, Urtica dioica, Gundelia glabra, Rheum ribes, and Ferula orientalis, According to the results obtained; dry matter ratio varied between 6.03–10.77%, organic matter ratio varied between 80.63–93.65%, protein ratio varied between 9.94–35.71%, P content varied between 112.38–806.54 mg/100 g, K content varied between 1597.46–7980.06 mg/100 g, Mg content varied between 214.64–704.84 mg/100 g, Ca content varied between 142.6.2–1157.53 mg/100 g and Fe content varied between 14.20–460.32 mg/100 g. Urtica dioica gave the best results in terms of protein, P, Mg, Ca, Na, and Cu, while Scorzonera mollis subsp. szowitzii gave the best results in terms of Mn and Cu. These new findings suggest that the obtained plants can be considered a valuable source of nutrients in human nutrition and will allow their inclusion in food nutrient databases.
