Does Economic Growth and Development Affect Mental Diseases? Evidence from Developing and Least Developed Countries

Gültekin, Ömer Faruk; İmamoğlu, İlyas Kays

While the process of economic growth and development reflects on societies as an increase in welfare, it can also lead to negative effects such as pollution and the emergence of some diseases. Population growth and the stresses and pressures of urban life also lead to an increase in mental diseases. The study aims to investigate the relationship between mental diseases and important development indicators such as income, population, and health in underdeveloped and developing countries. In the study, the Kuznets model was used to investigate mental diseases in 119 different countries for the period 1995-2019 using the variables of income per capita, life expectancy at birth, birth rate per woman, and number of people per square kilometer. In the estimation process, based on the results of the quantile regression test, it was found that there is a "U" shaped relationship between mental diseases and per capita income for many quantile levels. The turning point for mental illness about per capita income level was calculated to be approximately 2000 dollars for the average of different quantile levels. It can be said that developing policies for the risks caused by urban life and crowded populations in societies that strive for economic growth and development will provide advantages to countries in the process of reducing mental diseases.

The Future of Export-Based Growth Policies in the Turkish Economy: An Econometric Simulation Approach

    Coşkun, Hüseyin; Imamoglu, Ilyas Kays

The failure of the import substitution industrialization policies implemented in the Turkish economy between 1960 and 1980 led to the adopting of export-oriented policies for economic growth. In 1980, radical transformations were experienced in economic policies. Since 1980, exports have been attributed important meanings for sustainable economic growth. Therefore, this study analyzes the long-run and short-run relationship between exports and economic growth in the Turkish economy by using the ARDL bounds test approach with annual data sets for the period 1987-2021 and forecasts Turkey's GDP per capita for the period 2022-2032 by econometric simulation method. The ARDL model estimation results show that exports have a statistically significant and positive effect on economic growth in the short and long run. According to the forecast analysis, it has been determined that the per capita GDP in 2032 will be $20990 in the base export scenario, $17327 in the low-export scenario, and nearly double to $25157 in the high-export scenario. These results show that it is possible for the GDP per capita to nearly double in the next ten years in the Turkish economy. Still, policy components are needed to increase exports by an average of 13.86% annually to reach these figures.

Evaluation of Noise Levels in Flour Factories in Terms of Occupational Health and Safety

Albayrak, Sirer; Melike, Yağcı; Ozdemir, Mustafa

This study aims to determine the daily noise exposure levels in flour mills and evaluate the effects on the health and safety of workers. The study measured the equivalent sound pressure levels of workers exposed in two flour mills operating in Konya province in dBA. The factories include machines with high noise levels, such as sifters, sieves, and rollers. A Type-2 class sound pressure level meter was used in the measurements taken in accordance with ISO 9612: 2009 standard. Based on the measured values, the A-weighted equivalent sound pressure levels were determined, and the daily personal noise exposure levels were calculated taking into account the working hours. It was determined that the equivalent sound pressure levels and the daily individual noise exposure levels of the workers were in the range of 88.2-97.7 dBA and 87.9-97.4 dBA, respectively, and above the minimum daily personal exposure limit (80 dBA) specified in the legislation. As a result of the study, it was evaluated that the noise in flour mills can negatively affect the health and safety of workers as well as their job performance.

The Effect of 2023 Kahramanmaraş and Hatay Earthquakes on Real Estate Investment Behaviors

Çubukcu, M. Ihsan; Çubukcu, Fatmanur; Doker, Asli Cansin; Gülhan, Unal; Gülhan, Yeliz

Turkiye is located in the earthquake zone due to its geographical location and has witnessed major earthquakes throughout history. These earthquakes caused many deaths and also caused great economic losses. In February 2023, Mw7.7, Mw7.6, Aand Mw6.4 earthquakes occurred centered in Kahramanmara & scedil; and Hatay, respectively. More than 50 thousand people lost their lives and more than 100 thousand people were injured in these earthquakes. The earthquake caused great destruction in 11 provinces (Adana, Ad & imath;yaman, Diyarbak & imath;r, Elaz & imath;& gbreve;, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kahramanmara & scedil;, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye and & Scedil;anl & imath;urfa). The study aims to identify differences in investment behavior in the real estate sector after the earthquake. For this purpose, a survey was conducted throughout T & uuml;rkiye. According to the empirical findings of the study, significant differences were detected between real estate investment behaviors before and after the earthquake. It was observed that the participants took into account factors such as whether the building was built in accordance with earthquake regulations rather than factors such as location, interior and exterior design, and price, when making investments after the earthquake. It was also determined that the participants preferred detached or low-rise buildings instead of multi-storey buildings after the earthquake.

The determinants of non-family employees' turnover intentions in family firms

Yazici, Omer; Memili, Esra; Patel, Pankaj C.; Ramadani, Veland

While research on the organisational behaviour and HRM (i.e., organisational identification, justice, commitment, and turnover intentions) in family business contexts has been advancing, the empirical investigation of non-family employees’ perceptions is still scarce. Drawing upon family business-influenced literature and organisational identification, justice, and commitment theories, we explore the determinants of non-family employees’ turnover intentions. Specifically, we examine the impact of non-family employees’ family firm identification and perceived justice on family firm commitment, in turn affecting turnover intentions. Furthermore, we examine the moderation effects of perceived family influence on these links. Our findings demonstrate that non-family employees’ family firm identification and perceived justice positively affect their family firm commitment, which in turn lowers turnover intentions. While family firm commitment mediates the relationship between family firm identification and turnover intentions, perceived family influence moderates the mediation effects of family firm commitment between family firm identification and turnover intentions. 2023 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Analysis of occupational health and safety risks in beekeeping with fmea method

    Özdemir, Mustafa; Kökhan, Serhan

Contrary to popular belief, beekeeping, which dates back to prehistoric times and is one of the most important plant and animal production branches today, is not an innocent profession in terms of occupational health and safety. In this study, in order to determine the occupational health and safety risk factors in the beekeeping profession, Interviews with beekeepers were conducted in 10 apiaries operating in Bayburt, where especially wandering beekeeping is practiced. In light of the data obtained from the danger hunt applied by the occupational health and safety specialist, ergonomic, physical, biological, and chemical risks were revealed using the FMEA risk analysis method. The effect, probability, and detection values were found for each failure mode, and then Risk Priority Number values were calculated. As a result of the study, for the five basic stages of beekeeping, 15 processes, 39 failure modes, 72 potential effects, and 39 failure causes were determined. Failure modes with a Risk Priority Number value of 100 and above were evaluated as “situations where urgent action and axiom should be taken,” and preventive axioms were proposed for each relevant failure mode. The number of studies on the risk factors in the beekeeping profession is very limited in the literature. For this reason, it is predicted that this study will fill an important gap in the related field and make significant contributions to the literature.

Cross-cultural difference and spirituality in the workplace

    Kalkan, Nimet; Şükür, Fatma Betül

This chapter aims to consider workplace spirituality from a cross-cultural perspective. The terms workplace spirituality and culture are so intangible, and both start with the attitude and behavior of humans but are meaningful in a community. Because of the constraint of understanding these abstract settings, it is necessary to define and specify the dimensions of both concepts to achieve the aim of this chapter. In this regard, the section starts with the conceptuality of workplace spirituality and the dimensions of the term, which cumulate at individual, group, and organizational levels. It goes with the part of cultural dimensions in the light of Hofstede's (2001) direction, Chhokar, Brodbeck, and House's (2007) extension, and Sharma's (2010) derivation of cultural dimensions for national, organizational, and individual levels, respectively. After joining the dots, the chapter focuses on one of the most sacred research areas for academic literature, cross-cultural differences, and workplace spirituality. The last part of the chapter is the conclusion to point to final notes about the concepts and help guide future studies.

Tourism and FDI-Growth Nexus in Upper-Middle Income Countries: Evidence from Static and Dynamic Panel Analyses

Soylu, Özgür Bayram; Adeleye, Bosede Ngozi; Okur, Fatih; Emikönel, Murat

This paper examines the role of tourism in foreign direct investment-growth relations in upper-middle-income countries. We deploy static and dynamic panel analysis to evaluate how tourism indicators influence the impact of FDI net inflows on growth using unbalanced panel data on 29 upper-middle-income countries from 2010 to 2019. The tourism indicators are receipts, arrivals, and expenditures. The results from static and dynamic analyses indicate that for the most part (1) FDI and tourism exert asymmetric effects on growth, (2) tourism indicators reduce the negative effect of FDI on growth, (4) trade openness is a positive and significant predictor of growth, and (5) domestic credit negatively contributes to growth. Deductively, results evidence that tourism indicators are critical drivers of economic growth in upper-middle-income countries. Overall, tourism receipts show the largest influence on FDI to spur the most appreciable impact on growth. Despite this, the fact that tourism indicators cannot eliminate the destructive impact of FDI on economic growth shows that tourism development policies should be based on a greener and more sustainable ground, taking into account the effects of the coronavirus.

The Relationship Between Social Undermining and Job Stress:Mediation of Professional Ethical Standards, Moderating Role of Gender

    Battal, Fetullah; Seyrek, Emre

Purpose – The aim of this study is to reveal the relationships between social undermining, job stress, professional ethical standards and gender, which is one of the categorical variables. Design/methodology/approach – Structural equation modeling, one of the quantitative research methods, was used in the research. The data of the research were obtained from 229 academic staff who are still working at a state university located in the east of Turkey by online survey method. The obtained data were analyzed with the help of the original SPSS 22.0, SPSS extension Process Macro and AMOS 25.0 package programs. Findings – As a result of the research, a positive and significant relationship was found between social undermining and job stress. It has been determined that there is a negative and significant relationship between social undermining and professional ethical standards, and a positive and significant relationship between professional ethical standards and job stress. In addition, it was concluded that professional ethical standards have a partial mediating role in the relationship between social undermining and job stress. In addition, it was determined that the categorical variable, gender, played a moderator role in the mediating effect of social undermining and professional ethical standards on job stress. Discussion – In the study, attention was drawn to the negative consequences of social undermining. If necessary measures are taken to prevent social undermining in organizations, possible problems can be prevented. Since there is no other study in the literature that deals with social undermining, work stress and professional ethical standards together, it is expected to make a serious contribution to the field.

Mediating Role of Emotional Intelligence in the Impact of Positive Psychological Capital on Burnout: A Research on Employees

    Esmer, Yusuf; Arıbaş, Ayşe Nihan

In today's business life, employees need to be able to use their emotional intelligence when necessary and be equipped with positive psychological capital to be successful, contribute more to their organizations and cope with the feeling of burnout. The research is carried out to determine the relationships between positive psychological capital, emotional intelligence, and burnout. For this purpose, four hypotheses regarding the relationships between the variables are determined by scanning the relevant literature. The research population consists of employees working in various occupational groups in the provinces of Aksaray and Konya in Turkey. 408 people selected by convenience sampling method are determined as the sample of the research. Quantitative research method is used in the study. In this context, the data in the research are collected by the questionnaire technique. The research hypotheses are tested by regression analysis. As a result of the analysis, all hypotheses are accepted, and it is determined that positive psychological capital affects emotional intelligence positively and burnout negatively. In addition, it is concluded that emotional intelligence negatively affects burnout, and that positive psychological capital has a full mediating role in the effect of burnout.

An analysis on the relationship between income distribution and human development with panel data and machine learning

Ozden, Erdemalp; Gültekin, Ömer Faruk; Bayramoglu, Turgut

The aim of this study is to examine the effects of socioeconomic indicators such as human development,\rurbanization and female employment rate on income distribution in MIST countries, with both econometric\rand machine learning methods, and to predict the performance of these variables in income distribution\restimation.. Although there are many studies on growth in the economics literature, the income distribution\rhas not found the place it should be. To fill this void, the intensity of studies between growth and income\rdistribution has increased recently. For this purpose, we employed two separate analyzes using the panel data\rmethod and the Support Vector Regression method, which is one of the machine learning methods, by reaching\rthe Gini coefficients, HDI, urbanization, and female labor force participation data of the MIST countries for\rthe years 1990-2019. As a result, all determinants in the random-effects model have a statistically significant\reffect on income inequality. In the model, while HDI and urbanization are significant at 5%, female labor force\rparticipation is significant at 0.1%. Signs of all explanatory variables are negative, and therefore they have a\rdecreasing effect on income inequality. As HDI, urbanization, and female labor force participation values of\rMIST countries have improved since 1990, the Gini coefficients have improved. In other words, the income\rdistribution of these countries has become fairer. Unlike other studies in the literature, the Support Vector\rRegression model was used in this study, and SVR produced a more suitable model for predicting income\rinequality.

Assembly Line Worker Assignment and Balancing Problem by Considering Labor Cost

    Yılmaz, Hamid

Assignment of worker appears as a new problem in the literature for assembly lines (AL) where the workforce is heterogeneously located. The difference of this line balancing from the traditional line is that the assembly task times of the workers to be assigned to the stations differ from each other. Especially assembly lines issues are generally a labor-intensive type of production. Therefore, for assembly line problems, balancing activity should be done considering the labor costs. Thus, the proposed solutions will be able to produce more realistic results for real life. For this purpose, in this study, a mixed-integer mathematical formulation is presented for assembly line worker assignment and balancing problems by considering the objective function of minimizing labor costs and cycle time. The efficiency of the proposed model and the improvements have been demonstrated by solving test instances in the literature.

Analysis of the Validity of the Environmental Kuznets Curve Hypothesis for Turkey

    Yıldız, Şaduman

Environmental wastes increasing with the industrialization process have caused environmental problems to come into prominence worldwide. Therefore, the relationship between economic growth and environmental pollution has become the center of attention for many researchers, and many studies have been conducted. One of the most important hypotheses that reveal the relationship between these variables is the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC). In this context, the study aimed to examine the validity of the EKC, which revealed an inverse-U-shaped relationship between economic growth and environmental pollution, for Turkey in the period between 1990 and 2015. The relationship between environmental pollution and economic growth in the study was analyzed through the ARDL limit test. According to the analysis results, it was concluded that the EKC hypothesis was valid for Turkey in the period mentioned. In this respect, environmental degradation initially rises as economic growth increases, but environmental pollution decreases with the increase in environmental consciousness after a certain threshold growth level. Moreover, the study elucidated that the increase in the amount of renewable energy consumption reduced environmental pollution. Accordingly, it is recommended to produce with clean technology that will enhance the environmental quality in the production process and implement a stable growth policy that will increase the amount of renewable energy consumption within the total energy consumption. Furthermore, legal regulations can be made to promote the use of environmentally friendly technologies in production, and tax reductions or various investment supports can be provided within this framework.

The Dynamics Affecting the Export-Import Ratio in Turkey: A Hybrid Model Proposal with Econometrics and Machine Learning Approach

    Özden, Erdemalp

The indicators related to foreign trade are conventionally measured in a currency or as the ratio of the country's gross domestic products. The ratio of exports to imports, alternatively, provides more useful results when comparing the foreign trade performance of economies both over time and with other countries as a unit-free indicator. In this study, the macroeconomics and financial determinants affecting this ratio are examined both econometrically and using the machine learning method. In this context, the autoregressive distributed lag model method was first used to investigate the relationship between normalized gross domestic products, exchange rate, consumer price index, producer price index, crude oil and Turkey's ratio of exports to imports rate between 2010-2021, monthly. Long-term analysis showed that the 1% depreciation of the Turkish Liras against the US dollar increased the ratio of exports to imports rate by 0.7 points. In addition, a 1% increase in consumer price index will increase ratio of exports to imports by 1.9 points, while a 1% increase in producer price index will cause a -0.8 point decrease on the ratio of exports to imports. Then, the pattern between the variables was analyzed with quadratic support vector machine, a machine learning method. Finally, the novel ARDL-SVM hybrid method was developed, and the pattern between the variables was examined. The findings revealed that although the econometric method provided a broader scope for interpreting the relationships between variables, the developed ARDL-SVM method successfully captured patterns between variables.

The Effects of Urbanization, Life Expectation at Birth and Commercialization on Income Inequality: A Research on the Community of the Independent States and Some Baltic Countries

    Gültekin, Omer Faruk

One of the important results of economic development is the development of trade and the increase in welfare. A reflection of the increase in welfare is the prolongation of human life and the increase in urbanization. Through these indicators, societies are expected to develop economically and socially. In this study, as a reflection of welfare, the effect of commercialization, average life expectancy and urbanization on income inequality in the Commonwealth of Independent States countries and some Baltic countries that gained independence after the dissolution of the Soviet Union after 1991 were investigated. In the study, trade openness and the share of countries in world trade representing commercialization, urbanization representing the increase in welfare, and disposable Gini coefficient and market Gini coefficient representing income inequality examined. For the estimations, four models were created and different results were obtained for each model. In the analysis process, descriptive statistics, correlation matrix, multicollinearity, cross-section dependence, heteroscadasticity, autocorrelation tests were applied. Depending on the test results, the Driscoll-Kraay test was applied and the results were estimated. According to the results, it can be said that while commercialization has a positive effect on income inequality, urbanization has a negative effect on income inequality.

Optimized Machine Learning Algorithms for Investigating the Relationship Between Economic Development and Human Capital

    Ozden, Erdemalp; Guleryuz, Didem

In Economic Development, human capital was previously seen as production factors but gradually evolved into endogenous growth theories. Most of the previous studies have examined the relationships between economic development and human capital via econometric models. Since this relationship is usually nonlinear and machine learning (ML) models can resolve it better, this study investigates the relationships by employing ML methods to provide a new perspective. For this purpose, the optimized ML methods, namely Bayesian Tuned Support Vector Machine and Bayesian Tuned Gaussian Process Regression (BT-GPR), were performed to develop the prediction model for economic development. The hyperparameters have been optimized with the Bayes method by using different kernel functions to increase SVM and GPR methods' predictive performance. The Multiple Linear Regression model has been employed to make a comparison as an econometric model. The performance of the models is evaluated using three statistical metrics, namely, the root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and coefficient of determination (R2). The BT-GPR with the exponential kernel model has superior prediction ability with the highest accuracy (R2: 0.9727, RMSE: 0.4022, MAE: 0.3728 in the testing phase). The study shows that the BT-GPR model increases the accuracy of R2 6.4%, RMSE 10.7%, and MAE 1% compared with other developed models.

Non-family Employees in Family firms and Turnover Intentions: The Relevance of Identification and Justice Perceptions

Yazici, Omer; Memili, Esra; Patel, Pankaj

Many family firms hire and rely on non-family employees; therefore, the mutual benefits provided to both family and non-family members are important. Yet, the perspectives of non-family employees have been under researched. Drawing upon organizational identity and justice theories and the extant literature on family influence, this study examines non-family employees' perceived family influence, family firm identification, family firm justice, and turnover intentions in a sample of 301 family business non-family employees. Path analysis results show that non-family employees' perceived family influence can lead to family firm identification, in turn diminishing their turnover intentions. We also find that non-family employees' perceptions of family firm justice moderate the relationship between non-family employees' perceived family influence and family firm identification. We conclude by discussing implications.

Special Human Resource Management Practices and Strategy

    Yazici, Ömer

Today, one of the most valuable assets of companies is their workforce. Primarily, the importance of information is increased and the human factor that absorbs and uses it by creating value has become much more essential. One of the most critical steps that managers need to take to be successful is to enhance human power in the most efficient way possible. Companies that want to be long-lasting need to make HR the main item on their agenda. Human resource practices are critical for companies to survive. In addition to firms in general, family firms are also a special and the most common type of business in the economy. Hence, family firm HR practices are also an important part of this book. Among the most famous features of a family firm, complex HR management practices are on top of it all. Owners and family members are all aware that non-family employees are needed, and non-family managers are required for the success and sustainability of the family firm. Hence, family firms cannot have biased, bifurcated, or different HR practices towards non-family employees. Readers will find this book comprehensive and inclusive of new issues of HR management literature. The book is comprised of chapters, each describing current and important practices and problems of HR management. Along with the family firm-specific problems like nonfamily managers, women entrepreneurship, and nepotism, chapters cover the state-of-the-art topics and findings in the HR management literature. This includes organizational development and HR management relationship, discrimination and nepotism, women in family firms and tourism, HR accounting and digital age, quality and management, behavior, and change management. Students and scholars of human resource management, along with the leaders of modern management teams, will benefit from this book from the first page to the last page. Each chapter will carry its reader to the next level of understanding of issues and findings of human resource management.
