An Investigation of the Adaptation of Turkish Textile Enterprises to Industry 4.0

Yıldız, Aytaç; Özbek, Ahmet; Alan, Mehmet Asif

Industry 4.0 is a new understanding of production and is based (to a great extent) on the removal of people\rfrom production by radically changing the understanding of people-oriented production – a concept that has\rdominated for a long time. This understanding is becoming more widespread day by day and it is predicted\rthat the future will mean a better understanding of production. Therefore, it is anticipated that adaptation to\rthis understanding will be one of the determining factors in the future success of enterprises. In this study, it\rwas aimed to investigate the adaptation of textile companies operating in Turkey to Industry 4.0. Within the\rscope of the study, a questionnaire was prepared to analyze the perspectives of textile companies towards\rindustry 4.0 and their expectations from the industry 4.0 technologies they use. The questionnaire was\rapplied to 67 textile companies that ranked in the top 500 large enterprises of the Istanbul Chamber of\rIndustry (ISO) in 2017 and 2018 and the data obtained were analyzed. According to the results of the analysis\rit was determined that the technology that businesses use the most is ERP. Due to the high investment cost,\rit has been determined that only half of enterprises invest in industry 4.0 technologies, that they believe that\rindustry 4.0 is applicable in the textile industry, that to invest in these technologies will increase productivity\rand reduce costs, and as a result, the highest increase in efficiency will be achieved.

The Impact of Terrorism on Foreign Direct Investment: The Case of Turkey

    Arı, Ari; Ibrahim, Bello

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is a key source of foreign exchange, new jobs and bleeding-edgetechnology transfers for the developing countries. However, terrorist attacks in a country are an importantfactor determining the preferences of companies in investing abroad.Turkey has been facing both internal and external terrorist groups’ attacks since the late 1980s. In thiscontext, this study discussed the impact of terrorism on FDI inflows in Turkey for the period 1990-2019.Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bounds testing approach to co-integration was used in the study. The study revealed that terrorism affects FDI in Turkish economy positively and not significantly in theshort-run, while negatively and significantly in the long-run. Furthermore, the impact of some supportivevariables- inflation, trade openness, military expenditure and remittances on FDI and terrorism in themodel was also examined in the paper. The results concluded that trade openness shows a negative andsignificant impact on FDI both in the short-run and long-run. Remittances shows a negative and significantresult. This indicate that there is a short-run negative relationship between remittances and FDI. Inflationshows a positive but not a significant impact on FDI, and military expenditure also shows a negative andnon-significant impact in the short run, which normally has to be positive.

Non-Urbanization and Social Dynamics of Violence against Women

    Alacadağlı, Esmeray

Urbanization is a concept that defines the increase in the population living in cities in terms of demographics. In Turkey, the number of individuals living in urban areas increased continuously after the 1950s and reached around 93% as of today. However, urbanization also has economic and social dimensions. Because, rapidly increasing urbanization without sufficient infrastructure and demand generally leads to formation of cities with underlying unemployment, and the emergence of a social structure that is urbanized but not localized, ultimately not being able to integrate with the city. Generally, this social segment tries to survive by settling in the urban suburbs, consists largely of the masses who are not able earn their living with urban-jobs, and who ultimately cannot adopt urbanspecific behaviors, lifestyles and values. Hence, these masses try to survive in the city and with the dominant values of the places they came from, instead of integrating to the city culture, which leads to their alienation to city values, resulting alienation and potential tendencies towards violence due to increasing marginalization. This literature review-based study aims to provide solutions by analyzing the causes of the violence against women, which has recently been increased in our society, in the context of migration, urbanization and poverty phenomenon. Research results reveal the importance of nonurbanization and poverty, as being factors for violence against women.

Causality Relationship Between Government Stability and Trade Openness: The Case of Turkey

    Arı, Ari

International trade is very exposed to political risk and the existence of political risk components in a given market may cause problems in both export and import activities. Government instability is one of the political risk components that is related with trade openness. The paper examines the government stability-trade openness nexus for Turkey using Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) and VECM based Granger Causality test covering the period of 1984-2016. Results have shown that there is a unidirectional causality in the long run from trade openness to government stability. Because Turkey’s production of final goods usually is based on imports, an increase in exchange rate usually floats trade openness in favor of imports. This creates foreign trade deficit. Worsening economic conditions affects the government stability. Due to the unfavorable picture and economic crises in Turkey, the average duty time of the governments established between 1990-2003 was one year. Despite this, export-led growth and highest amount of foreign direct investment within three election periods starting from 2002, enabled the individuals to grasp the importance of stability in governance. During the 2010s, Turkey struggled with the foreign trade deficit, high inflation and unemployment rates brought about by the high exchange rate, and the deteriorating economic situation caused the ministers in the cabinet and even the presidential system to change. Thus, the study concluded that trade openness may affect the policy-relevant implications and create government instability for Turkey through changes in exchange rates and depreciation of Turkish lira.

Does the inclusion of women on the board add profit and value added to firms?

Ag, Aliriza; Yilmaz, Tuncer; Zengin, Yunus

Based on the idea that the majority of family companies and the dominance of patriarchy in the social structure in Turkey may reduce the effectiveness of female managers in company management, this study aims to examine the effect of female managers on firm performance in Borsa Istanbul (BIST) companies. We limited our study to 126 manufacturing companies that were continuously traded in the BIST in the 2010- 2017 periods. In general, the following results were obtained in the multiple regression analyzes. The ratio of women in the board of directors and the presence of at least 1 woman in the board of directors were not found to have a significant effect on performance criteria. While the effect of having 2 or more women in the board of directors on ROE and having 3 or more women on EVA/TA was significant, the effects on other performance criteria were not found to be significant.

The Importance of Foreign Direct Investments in Turkey’s Export: A New Strategy for Low and Medium Tech Firms

    Adalı, Zafer; Bilgin, Tuba

This research investigates the relationship between Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and export operated by low-, medium low-, and medium high-tech firms in Turkey. For this purpose, a hidden cointegration approach developed by Hatemi and Iraoundaoust Hidden cointegration is conducted on data covering the period between 2006:Q1 and 2018:Q3. According to Hatemi and Irandoust (Asymmetric interaction between government spending and terms of trade volatility. Journal of Economic Studies 39(3):368–378, 2012), hidden cointegration, there is no long-run relationship between the cumulative positive shocks of Low Tech Export (LTX) and cumulative positive shocks of FDI; the same existence is obtained for the cumulative negative shock between the variables. The outcomes identify that LTX and FDI respond to shocks differently in Turkey. Moreover, the same results were found for Medium Low-Tech Export (MLTE) and FDI. In another saying, a positive and negative shock in MLTX does not proceed with positive and negative shocks in FDI. Nonetheless, a long-run relationship between Medium High-Tech Export (MHTE) and FDI concerning both the positive and negative cumulative shocks is also found. A positive shock in MHTX is associated with the influence of positive in FDI. Furthermore, a negative shock in MHTX is also linked to the impacts of negative in FDI. Thus, it is recommended that Companies and governments manage cooperatively with foreign investors, sustain and create locational advantages, and implement policies that lower costs because low and medium low-tech export plays a ruling role in export performance.

The effect of sustainable development on economics complexity in oecd countries; [El efecto del desarrollo sostenible en la complejidad económica de los países de la ocde]

    Yaprakli, Sevda; Özden, Erdemalp

Economic complexity showing a holistic measure of countries' economic productive power and characteristics has become a new tool for understanding the dynamics of the economy. Examining the relationship between sustainable development and this new tool is vital in determining new policies. By applying panel data of OECD countries covering different development levels from 1996 to 2017 to a data-driven dynamic econometric model, the research provides fresh insight between sustainable development and economic complexity. The results indicate that economic complexity is significantly affected by sustainable developments’ economic indicators such as GDP, FDI, R&D expenditure, social indicators such as human development, income inequality, and environmental indicators such as production-based CO2 emissions, renewable energy consumption, and greenhouse gas. The research, consequently, suggests that switching to technology and knowledge-based production processes, expanding qualified production factor capacity, raising social living standards, and making investments in the green economy will foster economic complexity while ensuring stable sustainability.

The perception of mobbing in organizations and the analysis of organizational commitment relation: an application in private service institutions in istanbul

    İlhan, Ahmet; Yücel, Recep

    1. LITERATURE In recent years, the concepts of mobbing and organizational commitment have gained popularity in the literature of organizational psychology and organizational behavior. Therefore, mobbing and organizational commitment are the factors that will be determining whether the employee, as a result of the correspondence of personal and organizational goals, will want to continue working in the organization, and accordingly show an effort. These factors reveal the necessity of examining the human element and behavior in order to realize information and technology oriented works in the field of organization and management.1.1. Subject Of Study The subject of this study is the examination of the relationships between the mobbing phenomenon experienced in organizations, and organizational commitment and emotional, continuity, normative commitment types. In addition to this, determining the level of effect on how mobbing (physical and psychological pressure, exclusion, intimidation etc.) applied to employees within the organization affects their organizational commitment constitutes the framework of the study. 1.2. Aim And Significance Of Study The purpose of the study is to determine the effect, strength, and direction of the relationship between employees' mobbing perception and organizational commitment dimensions. Organizations' survival depends on their human resources. Therefore, it is very important to eliminate the mobbing of employees, to provide a healthy work environment and to increase their organizational commitment in order to ensure organizational harmony. Ensuring this harmony constitutes the importance of the study. 1.3. Study's Contribution To The Literature 2. DESIGN AND METHOD 2.1. Type of the Study It is extremely important for organizations to achieve organizational harmony in order to survive. In this regard, mobbing and organizational commitment variables, which are extremely important for organizational compliance, are discussed in the study. Accordingly, it is expected for mobbing and organizational commitment perceptions of employees working in different departments and different sectors in Istanbul, where work intensity is high, to be measured and compared, and to contribute to the literature based on the consistency of the results obtained. The study is based on an applied analysis. 2.2. Design of Study Descriptive research model was used in the study. 2.3. Problem of Study The main problem of this study is to investigate the effect and strength of the relationship between perception of mobbing, and organizational commitment in employees of organizations. In addition, it has been attempted to determine in what way and direction there is a relationship between the employees' exposure to mobbing, and in which dimensions of organizational commitment. 2.4. Data Collection Technique Within the scope of the research, in order to determine the relationship between mobbing and organizational commitment, the survey method was used to collect the data obtained from the sample. The universe of the research consists of those working in private service institutions serving in Istanbul. The reason for choosing the universe of the study is that the continuation, job success and contribution of an employee who is selected and recruited by spending so much effort, time and cost is of considerable importance today. In this context, the survey method was preferred in order to obtain data. The fact that there are approximately 2,500,000 private service employees in different sectors in the European side of Istanbul offers a wide range of opportunities to determine the universe and sample of the research. For this reason, the employees of private service institutions in Istanbul were selected as the universe of the study. This work, project numbered 2019/021,was supported by the Kırıkkale University Scientific Research Projects Coordination Unit. The Relationship Between Organizational Justice and Organizational Commitment: The Role of Organizational Identification

    Battal, Fetullah

The aim of this study is to reveal the relationships between organizational justice, organizational commitment level and perceptions of organizational identification. The data used in the research were collected through 206 face-to-face questionnaires working in a public university. The collected data were analyzed with the help of the original SPSS 22.0 and AMOS 25.0 package program. The most common finding reached at the end of the study is that the organizational justice perceived by the employees is positively and significantly associated with organizational commitment and organizational identification. In addition, when the relationship between the sub-dimensions of the concepts is analyzed, it is observed that there is no significant relationship between organizational justice and continuity commitment, and at the same time, it is observed that there is no significant relationship between the emotional commitment, which is a sub-dimension of organizational justice, and continuity commitment. In addition, it has been determined that organizational identification has a partial mediating role in the relationship between organizational justice perceptions and organizational commitment behavior. Finally, in this study, the national culture of the employees is discussed and theoretical assumptions are made on the subject. Given this aspect that Turkey is a society in which the female and the feeling of moving subjects with a heavy-ness it has been revealed in previous studies. Thus, it is possible to say that the results are in harmony with the national culture.

İş Kazalarının Lojistik Regresyon Yöntemi İle İncelenmesi: Bayburt İli Örneği

    Eygu, Hakan; Bulut, Mehmet

The Covid-19 outbreak, with its announcement as a pandemic, caused numerous changes in thesocial and economic fields, and these changes have become the new realities of our lives. Besides, the pandemicoutbreak has begun to change the business practices for organizations and employees at a rapid pace in termsof the strategy, time, place, and sector variables. In this context, the principles of natural selection, which is anevolutionary approach based on biology, have been used especially to develop and expand the scope oforganizational research and to explain organizational change and survival. This study aims to determine whatchanges the Covid-19 process has brought on organizations, along with the stages of crisis and change, andhow organizations react to these changes within the framework of natural selection. Furthermore, in respect ofthe relationship between organizations and change during the Covid-19 outbreak, an attempt has been made todetermine the types of organizational change that the organizations are subjected to due to environmentalpressures in the context of the principles of the natural selection approach. In this context, it is possible toforesee the type of change that organizations are exposed to and their forward-looking positions as a result ofthe natural selection processes. In line with the information obtained from this research, it was determined thatthe form of the organizations started to change as a result of the new realities revealed by the crisis and changes during the Covid-19 outbreak and the conditions set by the pandemic. Accordingly, we can say that, during theCovid-19 outbreak, the organizations have gone through unplanned, macro, sudden, extended, proactive andreactive, active and passive, and revolutionary changes. As a result of these changes, according to the naturalselection approach, some organizations diversify, cling, spread and win the fight for existence. On the otherhand, if some organizations cannot adapt to change, diversify harmfully or uselessly or cannot provideresources, they lose their fight for survival and disappear.
