- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ1Effects of the demineralisation degree on physicochemical, functional, microstructural and powder flow properties of whey powder
Bebek, Müşerref; Sert, Durmuş; Mercan, Emin
This study aimed to investigate the effects of the demineralisation process on powder flow, physicochemical, functional, and microstructural properties of whey powders (WP). WP samples were produced from 50, 70 and 90% demineralised sweet whey concentrates. Although the salt, ash, and lactic acid content of the powders decreased with increasing demineralisation, pH increased. D [3,2] (surface area mean diameter) value of WP samples ranged from 28.2 to 60.9 μm, in which demineralisation increased the particle size. The colour values showed increased darkness and yellowness, attributed to the higher demineralisation process. Demineralisation improved solubility and foaming characteristics, whereas it decreased the wettability and dispersibility of samples. The caking and cohesion characteristics of WP were significantly decreased by demineralisation. Demineralisation significantly improved the powder flow characteristics of samples. The cohesion index decreased depending on the demineralisation degree increased. Also, demineralisation decreased the cake strength and compaction coefficient of samples. Mineral content decreased with increasing demineralisation, with some minerals showing more sensitivity to demineralisation than others. Scanning Electron Microscope images showed reduced caking and clustering in samples with higher degrees of demineralisation. The results highlighted the importance of demineralisation as an effective parameter to control the properties of WP. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that the degree of demineralisation had a substantial impact on the physical and functional properties of WP.

Ayata, Ümit; Peker, Hüseyin
In this study, solvent-based yacht varnish, stone varnish, and waxy varnish were applied in two coats using a brush, following industrial application standards, to the surfaces of the following tree species: black alder (Alnus glutinosa L. Gaertn.), curupay (Anadenanthera macrocarpa Benth.), iatandza (Albizia ferruginea), lemon (Citrus limon (L.) Burm.), loquat (Eriobotrya japonica L.), magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora L.), plane (Platanus orientalis L.), sucupira (Bowdichia nitida Benth.), and hornbeam (Carpinus betulus L.). Subsequently, the color parameters (b*, C*, L*, a*, ho, ΔE*, ΔH*, Δb*, ΔC*, Δa*, and ΔL*) of the varnish layers were compared with those of the untreated surfaces. The results of analysis of variance revealed significant differences in all color parameters. Decreases in L* values and increases in a* values were observed for all wood types when treated with three different varnishes. Additionally, in plane, black alder, and hornbeam wood, application of all varnishes resulted in increases in b* and C* values, with decreases in ho values. In sucupira wood, however, decreases were observed in b*, C*, and ho values with the application of all three varnishes. It was observed that a single type of varnish yielded different results on different wood types. This finding was attributed to the different types of resins present in the varnish types used in the study, which resulted in varying outcomes.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ2Investigating the Effect of Polypropylene Fiber on Mechanical Features of a Geopolymer-Stabilized Silty Soil
Kamiloğlu, Hakan A.; Kurucu, Kutluhan; Akbaş, Dilek
This study investigates the stabilization of silty soil using alkali-activated fly ash and fibers with lengths of 3 mm and 12 mm. The study examines the effects of hybrid fiber length, fiber content, fly ash content, and activator content on the mechanical properties of the geopolymerstabilized samples. The objectives of this paper are 1) to examine the effect of activator content and fly ash content on the UCS, Al/Si ratio, and SiO2/Na2O ratio of the stabilized samples using a statistical approach, 2) to investigate the effect of hybrid fiber length on UCS, secant modulus, flexural strength, toughness, and flexural load-deformation characteristics of the stabilized soil. A statistical approach was employed to investigate the relationship between fly ash content, alkali activator content, and UCS value. Optimal fly ash content and alkali activator content were determined based on the statistical model. The geopolymer structure of the stabilized soil was characterized via SEM, EDS, XRD, and FTIR analyses. The effects of fly ash and alkali activator content on UCS, Al/Si ratio, and SiO2/Na2O ratio were determined using the derived statistical model. The study demonstrated that activator content, a critical factor in compaction, significantly influences the UCS value, as much as the effect of the Si/Al and SiO2/Na2O ratios. Additionally, variations in fly ash content led to an increase in the UCS value of up to 15%. Moreover, changing the activator content resulted in a maximum 12-fold increase in UCS value. Incorporating hybrid fibers for stabilization led to higher secant modulus (up to 30%), flexural strength (up to 6%), and ductility without compromising UCS.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ2The relationship between self-efficacy and emotional burnout levels of seafarers: the role of individual alienation – the case of Turkey
Battal, Fetullah; Durmuş, İbrahim; Çınar, Ertuğrul
Purpose: The study aims to examine the factors that may affect the burnout levels of ship workers. Design/methodology/approach: The scope of the research consists of seafarers on ships docking at the ports of Zonguldak, Karadeniz Eregli, Eren and Filyos in the Western Black Sea region of Turkey. The sample consists of officers, engineers, dynamic position operators, electricians, boatswains, able seamans, pumpmans and stewards working on ships. In this respect, a random questionnaire was used in the research method and a questionnaire was sent to 400 of these employees, representing the main sample, and 263 of them fully answered the online questionnaire. Findings: As a result of the research, first of all, it is seen that the increase in the self-efficacy of the seafarers decreases their emotional burnout levels. In the second step, the strong self-efficacy of the seafarers reduced the level of individual alienation. In the third step, the increase in the individual alienation of the ship workers also caused an increase in the levels of emotional exhaustion. Originality/value: As a result, it has been seen that there is a partial mediating role of individual alienation in the relationship between the self-efficacy of the seafarers and their emotional exhaustion. In other words, high self-efficacy is not the only reason for the decrease in emotional burnout levels among seafarers. At the same time, self-efficacy has an effect on the individual alienation levels of seafarers.

Cinar, Mehmet; Can, Sümeyra; Baris, Özlem; Demirci, Çiğdem Elif
Diltiazem and Verapamil are two important drug molecules in a separate group of Calcium Channel Blockers. The purpose of this work is to determine and compare the structural and spectroscopic properties of these two molecules using a number of experimental techniques and quantum chemical calculations. Compounds were characterized spectroscopically using FT-IR, Raman, NMR (1H, 13C, and DEPT), and UV–vis methods. Furthermore, the Density Functional Theory (DFT) method, Becke's three-parameter hybrid functional (B3LYP), and the 6–311++G(d,p) basis set were used to determine the ground state geometric structures of molecules, and the spectroscopic properties of the obtained optimum structures were investigated computationally. The optimization studies performed under vacuum circumstances and for the isolated molecules were found to be very close to the experimental results. In fact, r.m.s. values were discovered for Diltiazem and Verapamil with bond lengths of 0.013 and 0.024, and bond angles of 1° and 2°, respectively. The vibration characteristics of the compounds were discovered using the collected FT-IR and Raman spectra, and significant vibrational modes were assigned. After scaling, it was revealed that the quantum chemical data was congruent with the experimental ones, and that the characteristic vibrational modes were appropriately predicted. DFT calculations effectively determine molecules' structures due to internal consistency, despite being slightly distant from experimental data. Theoretical values for carbon and hydrogen atoms are better in agreement with observed values when scaling with 0.92 and 0.90. From the UV–vis spectra, Diltiazem HCl absorbance peaks were found at 207 and 237 nm, whereas Verapamil HCl absorbance peaks were identified at 203, 229, and 278 nm. When the theoretical calculations and experimental findings were compared, the anticipated absorption peaks were found to have shifted nearer the visible area. Furthermore, Hirshfeld surfaces and Molecular Electrostatic Potential surfaces were obtained and analyzed in order to better understand the electronic characteristics. The TDOS and PDOS (total and partial density of state) spectra were also studied. Finally, using the HOMO and LUMO energy values, the critical chemical parameters were evaluated, and it was discovered that both molecules had positive electron affinity and electronegativity values, indicating that they will accept electrons when the electron-nucleus attraction exceeds the electron-electron repulsion.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ1Feature selection with annealing for forecasting financial time series
Pabuccu, Hakan; Barbu, Adrian
Stock market and cryptocurrency forecasting is very important to investors as they aspire to achieve even the slightest improvement to their buy-or-hold strategies so that they may increase profitability. However, obtaining accurate and reliable predictions is challenging, noting that accuracy does not equate to reliability, especially when financial time-series forecasting is applied owing to its complex and chaotic tendencies. To mitigate this complexity, this study provides a comprehensive method for forecasting financial time series based on tactical input–output feature mapping techniques using machine learning (ML) models. During the prediction process, selecting the relevant indicators is vital to obtaining the desired results. In the financial field, limited attention has been paid to this problem with ML solutions. We investigate the use of feature selection with annealing (FSA) for the first time in this field, and we apply the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso) method to select the features from more than 1000 candidates obtained from 26 technical classifiers with different periods and lags. Boruta (BOR) feature selection, a wrapper method, is used as a baseline for comparison. Logistic regression (LR), extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), and long short-term memory are then applied to the selected features for forecasting purposes using 10 different financial datasets containing cryptocurrencies and stocks. The dependent variables consisted of daily logarithmic returns and trends. The mean-squared error for regression, area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, and classification accuracy were used to evaluate model performance, and the statistical significance of the forecasting results was tested using paired t-tests. Experiments indicate that the FSA algorithm increased the performance of ML models, regardless of problem type. The FSA hybrid models showed better performance and outperformed the other BOR models on seven of the 10 datasets for regression and classification. FSA-based models also outperformed Lasso-based models on six of the 10 datasets for regression and four of the 10 datasets for classification. None of the hybrid BOR models outperformed the hybrid FSA models. Lasso-based models, excluding the LR type, were comparable to the best models for six of the 10 datasets for classification. Detailed experimental analysis indicates that the proposed methodology can forecast returns and their movements efficiently and accurately, providing the field with a useful tool for investors.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ1Recruiting grape-isolated antagonistic yeasts for the sustainable bio-management of Botrytis cinerea on grapes
Oztekin, Sebahat; Karbancioglu-Guler, Funda
Botrytis cinerea is the causative agent of grey mould disease in grapes, which was linked to significant postharvest losses. This study examined three grape-isolated yeasts (Metschnikowia aff. fructicola, Metschnikowia pulcherrima, and Hansenispora uvarum) through in vitro and in vivo tests on detached grape berries against grey mould, as well as the elucidation of their possible mechanisms of action. The antifungal mechanism of action of yeasts was determined by the lytic enzyme activity, inhibition of spore germination, biofilm activity, iron depletion, diffusible metabolites, wound-site colonisation, mycocin, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) production. The highest in vitro efficacy (83.13%) was observed on M. aff. fructicola, followed by M. pulcherrima (82.10%) and H. uvarum (71.66%). Metschnikowia yeasts exhibited comparable enzyme activities, including protease, β-1,3 glucanase, gelatinase chitinase, and cellulase, while H. uvarum had a poor enzymatic activity with chitinase and gelatinase. M. aff. fructicola showed relatively higher iron depletion activity than M. pulcherrima, while M. pulcherrima outperformed via diffusible metabolites. All yeast cultures significantly reduced spore germination by at least 86%. Overall, M. aff. fructicola exhibited the highest biocontrol activity with its iron depletion, inhibition of conidial germination, biofilm formation, VOCs, and well colonisation on grape berries. M. aff. fructicola 1-UDM outperformed all other yeasts by significantly reducing disease incidence and lesion diameter values (93.4% and 94.3%, respectively). Remarkably, H. uvarum VOCs demonstrated potential as a biofumigant for suppressing grey mould. All yeasts are well adapted to their ecological niche to bio-protect grapes from grey mould disease.

One of the nanomaterial-based antimicrobials, CuS, has emerged as a potential active therapeutic agent to combat biofilm infections, showing superior antibacterial activity with both photothermal and photodynamic effects under NIR illumination. To investigate the influence of transition metals on the antibacterial activity of CuxS, the antibacterial properties of shape- and phase- controlled copper-based multinary sulfide (M: CuxS (M: Mn, Zn and Ni)) nanostructures prepared by hot injection method were investigated against Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative Escherichia coli under NIR light irradiation. It has been shown that CuxS-based nanomaterials suppress bacterial growth under NIR light irradiation and that, in addition to their antibacterial activity, they also exhibit a remarkable ability to form biofilms. The antibiofilm efficacy of the M:CuxS (M: Mn, Zn and Ni) nanocomposites was significantly higher than that of bare CuS, resulting in biofilm inhibition with rates of 52.53 %, 62.24 % and 74.48 % on E. coli for Mn:CuxS, Zn:CuxS and Ni:CuxS, respectively. In addition, the biofilm of S. aureus was more affected by treatment with M:CuxS (M: Mn, Zn and Ni) nanocomposites, with biofilm activity of 64.15 %, 68.42 % and 87.35 % for Mn:CuxS, Zn:CuxS and Ni:CuxS, respectively. Ni:CuxS showed the highest antibacterial activity, which is attributed to smaller crystal and particle size and energy band gap, resulting in a larger number of nanoparticles per unit volume, a larger surface area and a stronger tendency to electrostatically bind to bacterial cell membranes, a faster ability to penetrate channels and stronger absorption in the NIR range. This work points the way for a broad application of CuS-based biocompatible synergistic antibacterial nanocomposites and can also serve as a guide for antibacterial/antibiofilm approaches as an alternative to conventional antibiotic treatments.

Pollen is made up of many chemical constituents such as proteins, sugars, lipids, minerals and phytochemicals. These components make pollen products an excellent source of nutrients and antioxidants for consumers. However, mycotoxigenic fungi are also common in pollen, creating contamination from generated mycotoxins. With adequate monitoring, sampling, processing and storage of pollen the development of mycotoxins can be significantly prevented. Since pollen grain has strong membranes which can limit the bioavailability of some nutrients and phytochemicals, novel methods and pretreatments are required with special emphasis on microbiological pretreatment methodologies. Pollen Chemistry & Biotechnology summarizes current knowledge of the chemical composition of pollen, its importance as a functional food ingredient and its health promoting properties. As Introduction part a short elaborate about botanical characteristics and data, including morphology and anatomy of pollen and bee preferences, is given. Important factors such as the botanical and geographical origin, best practices for preservation of nutritional composition, bioactivity and safety of pollen are covered in full. The nutritional profile of pollen based on data for minerals, lipids and nutrients is presented. - MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ2Effects of Recycled Asphalt Material and Natural Pozzolan as Additives of Hot-Mix Asphalt: A Field Study
Yilmaz, Bahadır; Şentürk, Mehmet Akif
Using existing resources more efficiently and effectively becomes important currently. The question of how to make the best use of resources arises in the choice between constructing new roads and improving deteriorated existing roads. It is also important to reduce the amount of consumption and cost of materials. This has emerged the need to use waste materials by recycling and reusing. In this study, a new hot-mix asphalt (HMA) mixture was developed using recycled asphalt pavement (RAP), which was obtained by excavating the surface of a road at the end of its service life, together with a waste material namely natural pozzolan (NP). The final obtained mixture was used as a wear layer on an active highway. Core specimens were extracted from the paved layer for one year and subjected to dynamic and mechanical laboratory tests. Adding NP improved the resistance of the HMA mixture under heavy seasonal effects and traffic loads. In addition, NP increased the tensile strength, making the HMA mixture more resistant to deformation than control and RAP HMA mixtures. Dynamic creep test results showed that the control asphalt mixture had the most deformation and that the RAP mixture with NP had the least. According to the laboratory results, NP addition increased the stability value of the control mixture by 40%. Especially in cold seasons, the role of NP was more evident. In the performance tests that were applied on core samples taken from the field, ITS values for September increased by 98%, and the deformation values obtained as a result of the dynamic creep test decreased by 12%. In summary, adding NP to RAP HMA improves the performance of the pavement and the cost-effectiveness of the environmentally friendly use of RAP in HMA.

Ari, Yılmaz Onur; Zeneli, Fjona
The link between remittances, food security, and economic growth is a complex and important element of the economic development of the society. The study aims to explore the causality relationships between Remittances, Food Security and Economic Growth in the Turkish economy. The period of study from 1974 to 2018 and annual data of Remittances, Calories intake (as a proxy for the food security) and Economic Growth are used in the framework of time series. Techniques such as Zivot-Andrews (ZA) unit root, Toda-Yamamoto (TY), Breitung-Candelon (BCG), and Hatemi-J tests are used to detect the causality assessing the direction of it. The main findings consist of: (i) the presence of cointegration of rank two among series, the lack of linear TY time domain causality; (ii) the presence of BCG spectral causality from Calories intake to Growth only in medium period at 10% significance and, (iii) the presence of asymmetric causality from Remittances to Growth in positive changes, from Growth to Calories intake in negative changes and from Calories intake to Remittances in positive changes respectively at 1,5, and 1% significance. In this study, electrical changes in diode parameters of Schottky diodes that made of a kesterite semiconductor were examined under different temperatures. For this aim, Cu2ZnSnSe4 (CZTSe) nanocrystals were fabricated using the hot injection technique, and it was covered by spin coating on an ITO glass substrate. We was introduced the physical and structural analyses using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray spectroscopy. Current–voltage measurements were fulfilled at different temperature (from 100 to 325 K) under dark environment. It was observed that its electrical parameters were strongly affected by temperature.

Background: Considering the low rate of qualitative studies on athletes with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), aiming to access in-depth data, we thought that the utilization of the qualitative method would allow us to collect the appropriate and sufficient data to yield novel findings and achieve sound conclusions. The study’s aim was to investigate anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury experience processes in athletes who had undergone isolated ACLR, reveal the clinically related milestones, and highlight the necessary gaps. Methods: Semi-structured interview techniques, in-depth follow-up questions, and thematic analysis were used to explore the experiences of participants with isolated ACL injuries 1–3 years after surgical treatment. The study was conducted in the Orthopaedics and Traumatology outpatient clinic of the Adana City Training and Research Hospital and included 14 male athletes who had undergone isolated primary ACLR. The study group’s demographic and qualitative data were collected in the first week of September 2023. The member checking process was completed in the third following week. A thematic analysis checklist was used to ensure the reliability of the thematic analysis. The Consolidated Criteria for Reporting of Qualitative Research (COREQ) guidelines were followed. Results: The experiences of 14 patients (22.78 ± 3.76 years, all males) were summarized into four themes that emerged from the data analysis process: ‘The Distinctions in the Participants’ Experiences Regarding the Moment of Injury,’ ‘Gathering Information about the ACL Injury,’ ‘Factors That Facilitate The Treatment Process and Reinforce Positive Experiences,’ and ‘Desperate Plight: Main Points of Patients’ Negative Experiences.’ Based on the main themes, there were 14 subthemes. Conclusions: Our study revealed that varying perceptions of ACL injury presented by the participants, which were caused by all stakeholders, including themselves, the professional environment, family members, social network, and the healthcare staff, showed that the physical and psychological impacts of the injury were observed in different severity levels at each stage of the process. We believe that an extensive guide for athletes with ACL injuries that includes all components of well-being and displays the required details for the sports club/coach, family/companion, and physician.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ1Investigating the Effectiveness of Augmented Reality Technology in Science Education in Terms of Environmental Literacy, Self-Regulation, and Motivation to Learn Science
Arici, Faruk
Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology that provides users with an engaging learning experience by placing interactive virtual 3D models in natural environments. It is known that the use of AR technology in science education has many educational benefits. This study investigated the impact of AR technology on the development of environmental literacy, self-regulation skills, and motivation for science learning, which are increasingly important skills. Acquiring these high-level skills is essential for supporting students’ development in preventing environmental problems, addressing the motivation decrease seen primarily due to distance learning, and acquiring the self-regulation skills that have gained importance due to distance learning. The study was conducted with a quasi-experimental design on fifth-grade students, with one experimental (34) and one control (36) group. The findings were analyzed through MANOVA and content analysis. The results showed that AR technology supports environmental sensitivity, positive behavior, and the development of environmental knowledge and skills. In addition, AR technology has significant contributions in terms of self-regulation. Finally, it is recommended to use AR technology in science education to develop these variables and positively affect participants’ motivation for science learning.
