Alamoudi, Mohammed; Özdemir, Akın; Dertli, Enes; Bolubaid, Mohammed; Alidrisi, Hassan M.; Taylan, Osman; Yılmaz, Mustafa Tahsin; Şahin, Engin

There has been an increasing interest in biocatalysts over the past few decades in order to obtain high efficiency, high yield, and environmentally benign procedures aiming at the manufacture of pharmacologically relevant chemicals. Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB), a microbial group, can be employed as biocatalysts while performing asymmetric reduction of prochiral ketones. In this study, Leuconostoc mesenteroides N6 was used for the asymmetric bioreduction 1-indanone. And then, a novel and innovative face-centered design-based multi-objective optimization model was used to optimize experimental conditions. Also, the experimental design factors were defined as agitation speed, incubation period, pH, and temperature for optimization to acquire the maximum enantiomeric excess (ee) and conversion rate (cr) values. When using the face-centered design-based multi-objective optimization model, the optimum culture conditions corresponded to 96.34 and 99.42%, ee and cr responses, respectively, were pH = 5.87, incubation temperature = 35 °C, incubation period = 50.88 h, and agitation speed = 152.60 rpm. Notably, the validation experiment under the optimum model conditions confirmed the model results. This study demonstrated the importance of the optimization and the efficiency of the face-centered design-based multi-objective model.

Free Vibration and Buckling Analysis of Porous Two-Directional Functionally Graded Beams Using a Higher-Order Finite Element Model

    Turan, Muhittin; Adiyaman, Gokhan

A new type of functionally graded material (FGM) with material properties varying in two or three directions is needed to obtain materials with better mechanical properties and high-temperature resistance for use in the military, aerospace, automotive, and engineering structures. Considering the porosity that occurs during the production of these materials, it has become necessary to examine the free vibration and buckling behaviors. Therefore, this study investigated free vibration and buckling analysis of porous two-directional functionally graded (2D FG) beams subject to various boundary conditions. A high-order finite element based on parabolic shear deformation theory (PSDT) is proposed to solve this problem. Three types of porosity distributions were used in the study (FGP-1, FGP-2, and FGP-3). The governing equations are derived from Lagrange’s principle. The material change in the beam volume in both directions is defined by a power-law rule. The dimensionless fundamental frequencies and critical buckling loads are obtained for various boundary conditions, gradation exponents (px, pz), porosity coefficient (e), porosity distribution, and slenderness (L/h). The numerical results obtained with the proposed higher-order finite element are compatible with the literature.

Utilization of Fruit and Vegetable Wastes in Food Packaging

    Yildiz, Aysun Yurdunuseven; Öztekin, Sebahat

Today, the most preferred materials used in food packaging are non-degradable petroleum-based plastic polymer materials due to their high barrier and mechanical properties. These polymer materials are not sustainable due to limited petroleum resources. These non-biodegradable materials pose a serious problem for the environment and affect the entire ecosystem. In recent years, as an alternative to traditional materials for food packaging, the demand for the development of environmentally friendly packaging materials has increased in order to reduce and/or limit the negative impact on the environment. The increasing interest in environmental issues and human health has led to the investigation of possible matrices for bio-packaging in the field of food packaging. In this context, there is an increasing interest in the utilization of fruit and vegetable wastes such as peels, pips, seeds, and leaves. Fruit and vegetables are among the most widely consumed products worldwide, and their waste is the most abundant food waste. These wastes, which are released after fruit and vegetable processing and contain valuable components, can cause environmental pollution if not managed properly. The management of this large amount of waste is difficult, and it is usually either disposed of in water sources and open storage areas or used as feed or compost. However, these wastes have the potential to be used as raw materials for the development of value-added products. Due to their abundant availability and biodegradability, these wastes can solve the major problems associated with conventional plastics used for food packaging and improve sustainable development and life cycles. A more sustainable and greener world can be targeted with these biodegradable materials. This chapter focuses on the conversion of fruit and vegetable waste into environmentally friendly food packaging systems. The chapter emphasizes the advantages and disadvantages of using fruit and vegetable waste as food packaging material and its potential applications. In this context, all mentioned aspects have been comprehensively reviewed, taking into account the literature reported in the last five years. Before processing fruit and vegetable wastes into packaging materials, some steps, such as extraction and purification, are necessary. Materials derived from these wastes have the potential to be used in food packaging with various advantages, such as non-toxicity, biodegradability, and abundant availability. However, there is also a great debate about the applications of these food packaging materials. Further research is needed to improve the barrier and mechanical properties of packaging materials derived from fruit and vegetable waste. Most bioplastics do not meet the basic requirements of food packaging in terms of barrier and mechanical properties, and various modifications are needed to improve their properties. Therefore, future studies should focus on the necessary research to improve the barrier and mechanical properties of materials derived from these wastes. Finally, the legal framework for the large-scale use of these biomaterials derived from fruit and vegetable wastes in food packaging is insufficient, and this may affect the commercialization and consumer acceptance of the products.

Optimum steel frame design through ultimate seismic energy dissipation of double diagonal friction dampers

    Carbas, Serdar; Artar, Musa

In this paper, a creative design methodology is exhibited to attain seismic design optimization of steel frames that are equipped with double diagonal braces on which Pall friction dampers (PFDs) are mounted. The PFDs supply highest seismic energy dissipation to a structure for restricting destructive structural responds. Hence, the PFDs provide elastic movement to the steel frames to avoid the damaging consequence of an earthquake. To achieve this, the seismic energy dissipation over PFDs mounted on double diagonal brace members are tried to be maximized in this study. The Kobe earthquake record is used for conducting nonlinear dynamic time-history analyses to acquire structural responses of the steel frames. The Jaya algorithm (JA) that is a gradient- and parameter-free metaheuristic optimization technique is selected as an optimizer. The design algorithm encoded in MATLAB is integrated with SAP2000 structural analysis program through inbuilt open application programming interface (OAPI) functions to achieve simultaneous structural seismic responses. In proposed design methodology, firstly the optimal designs of steel frame structures without implementing double diagonal friction dampers are accomplished under effect of seismic loading exposed to structural design constraints of stress, displacement, drift, and geometric taken from AISC-ASD structural specifications. Then, the double diagonal friction dampers are implemented in the optimally sized frames to determine optimum yield strengths which are frictional slip loads. Hereby, the JA makes certain the dissipated seismic energy as maximum by checking the yield strength between the frame stories. In the end, it is verified that the PFD mounted double diagonal friction dampers provide maximum seismic energy dissipation throughout the steel frame structures for optimal sizing.

    Smart and Sustainable Energy Systems

Guclu, Tamer; Cuce, Pinar Mert; Cuce, Erdem

Today, fossil fuels still have a more important share in energy production. Reducing the share of these resources in energy production is an extremely important issue in order to prevent the environmental effects caused by greenhouse gas emissions. Especially in the last ten years, the transformation into smart and sustainable energy systems has accelerated in order to use energy resources efficiently and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Smart energy systems are systems that allow the use of renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and geothermal instead of a fossil fuel-based large production system. Thanks to these systems, instead of a single large power generation facility, energies produced from renewable sources close to the area of use can be integrated into the system, thus reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, smart energy systems are effective in reducing energy costs, as they make final consumers a part of energy production. In addition, since smart energy systems allow the integration of sectors such as electricity, heating, energy, transportation, and transmission, they provide a sustainable, accessible, economical, clean, and efficient energy supply. In this study, information about smart and sustainable energy systems has been given, advantages and difficulties have been mentioned, and also an economic evaluation has been made.

AC transport loss analysis of HTS stack busbars for all-electric aircraft with harmonics and DC offset considerations

Abdioglu, Murat; Gautam, Gaurav; Zhang, Min; Yuan, Weijia

This paper presents a study of the current carrying capacity and AC loss of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) stacks to be used in busbar applications for all-electric aircraft. A 2D model was developed using COMSOL Multiphysics with a T-A formulation for detailed analysis. The study began by applying a stable 20 kA DC offset current to the HTS stacks to simulate practical operating conditions. Firstly, the behaviour of the critical current was studied under self-field conditions for stacks with different numbers of HTS tapes and spacing. Secondly, AC ripple currents were introduced with DC offsets, and the effects of 3rd and 5th harmonic distortions (HD) were studied. The results show that configurations with 40 tapes and gaps of more than 2 mm are considered suitable for safe current transport under DC conditions. On the other hand, increasing the tape spacing leads to an increase in the safe transport current ripple due to the reduced magnetic field interaction within the stack. In addition, the transport loss decreases as the air gap increases due to the reduction in the self-field, whereas it increases as the number of strips increases. The influence of the 3rd HD on the transport loss is minimal at a ripple current of 1% and slightly noticeable at 2%. However, it becomes more obvious as the ripple current approaches the critical value. Remarkably, even cases with equivalent total HD show significantly higher transport losses when characterised by higher 5th HD than their counterparts with 3rd HD. This comprehensive analysis provides valuable information on the performance characteristics of HTS stacks in all-electric aircraft busbar applications and offers important insights for the development and optimisation of these systems in practical aerospace applications.

Analyzing of continuous and discontinuous contact problems of a functionally graded layer: theory of elasticity and finite element method

Yaylacı, Murat; Öner, Erdal; Adıyaman, Gökhan; Öztürk, Şevval; Uzun Yaylacı, Ecren; Birinci, Ahmet

Contact mechanics analysis is crucial because such problems often arise in engineering practice. When examining contact mechanics, the material property of the contacting components is a crucially significant aspect. It is more complex to solve the contact mechanics of systems that are composed of materials that do not have a homogenous structure compared to materials that have homogeneous qualities throughout. While many studies on contact problems with homogeneous materials exist, those involving non-homogeneous materials are scarce in the literature. As material technology improves fast, there will be a greater need to solve such problems. In this respect, analytical and finite element method (FEM) solutions of the continuous and discontinuous contact problems of a functionally graded (FG) layer are carried out in this article. The FG layer in the problem rests on a rigid foundation and is pressed with a rigid punch. From the solutions, the contact length, contact stress, initial separation distance, and beginning and ending points of separation were determined, and the results were compared. It has been concluded that the FEM findings are consistent with the analytical results to a satisfactory degree. This study analyzes contact problem using different approaches and accounts for the influence of body force in a contact geometry that has yet to be reported.

Pollen Morphology and Anatomy with Botanical Preferences Made by Bees: An Introduction Data

    Canlı, Deniz; Bayram, Nesrin Ecem

Pollen is a microspore containing vegetative and generative cells prepared for pollination in seed plants. Because pollen grains show highly variable characteristics, these structures are used to evaluate kinship relationships and similarity levels in plants. However, plant sources of honey, which is consumed as an important food source and functional food, can also be determined by identifying the pollen grains included in the honey by bees. In this study, the characteristic parameters used for the identification of pollen grains in plants and the plant sources frequently visited by bees were mentioned. As a result, variables such as size, polarity and symmetry, shape, exine sculpturing, intine properties and apertures are the main characteristics used to describe pollen grains. Considering these variables, it can contribute to the identification of plant taxa. In addition, the plants that honey bees visit to collect nectar and the botanical origin/source of honey (monofloral-multifloral) can also be determined by identifying the pollen grains included in the honey.

Global attractors in a two-species chemotaxis system with two chemicals and variable logistic sources

    Ayazoglu, Rabil; Salmanova, Kamala A.

This paper deals with the higher dimension quasilinear parabolic-parabolic chemotaxis model involving a source term of logistic type (formula presented), subject to the homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions in a Ω ⊂ RN (N ≥ 1) with smooth boundary. It is shown that for the attractionrepulsion case with χ2 ≤ 0, the global boundedness of solutions can be ensured by µ1, µ2 > 0 without any other assumptions, due to the contribution of the logistic sources included in addition to the repulsion mechanism. While for the attraction-attraction case with χ2 > 0, the global boundedness of solutions has to require logistic coefficients µ1, µ2 > 0 such that µ2 properly large.

Pollution Source and Soil Quality Assessments of Heavily Contaminated Soils by Selected Potentially Toxic Elements in a Human-Degraded Wetland Area

Kurt, Mehmet Ali; Yalçın, Sezen; Güler, Cüneyt; Güven, Onur; Yıldırım, Ümit

Wetlands are transitional between terrestrial and aquatic environments and have essential ecological functions. Unfortunately, due to anthropogenic activities and climate change, the area covered by wetlands is gradually decreasing worldwide, causing deterioration and loss of their critical and vital ecological functions. One of these degraded wetlands is the Hürmetçi Sazlığı, a nationally important wetland located in the Kayseri Province of Turkey. This study aims to determine the spatial and vertical (depth profile) distribution and the sources of the potentially toxic elements (PTEs) As, Cd, Pb, and Zn in the soils around the Hürmetçi Sazlığı Wetland (HSW) and to evaluate environmental risk factors using various soil quality indicators. According to the results obtained, it was determined that some parts of the wetland soils were significantly polluted in terms of As, Cd, Pb, and Zn. The concentrations (in mg/kg) of these PTEs in the soil around the wetland ranged between 9.12 and 273.9 for As, 0.38 and 1119.46 for Cd, 3.59 and 1807.66 for Pb, and 41.68 and 77,287.5 for Zn. Several soil quality indicators, including the Enrichment Factor (EF), Contamination Factor (CF), Ecological Risk Index (ERI), and Potential Ecological Risk Index (RI), were calculated to determine the quality and pollution levels of the collected soil samples. According to the calculated RI values, 70 out of 77 sites sampled in the area around the HSW are in the “High Risk” class in terms of all studied PTEs. The soil profile samples indicated that the topsoil (0–50 cm) was heavily contaminated by all PTEs, particularly near a zinc processing plant established in 1976. In addition, parts of the wetland further away from the Zn processing plant were also affected by arsenic pollution from geogenic sources, which can be associated with Plio-Quaternary volcanic activity in the region.

    Ayata, Ümit

The color of wooden materials can be altered through various applications (thermal treatment, bleaching, impregnation, aging, etc.). This study aimed to investigate alterations in color, whiteness index (WI*), and glossiness properties resulting from the application of two distinct solutions (two different types of vinegar and a mixture of carbonate) on the surfaces of iatandza (Albizia ferruginea) wood. A reference group was established, and the surfaces subjected to treatments were compared among themselves. According to the results of the analysis of variance conducted, the solution type prepared over all tests was determined to be statistically significant. The L*, C*, b*, and a* values in the color parameters decreased while the h° value exhibited an increase after the application of solutions. The ∆E* values were measured at 13.63 for the carbonate + vinegar (A) solution and 13.13 for the carbonate + vinegar (B) solution. Furthermore, the calculated differences ∆b*, ∆L*, ∆a*, and ∆C* using color formulas were observed to be negative for both solutions. Glossiness values exhibited reductions in both directions at 60 and 85 degrees, alongside decreases in WI* values in both orientations. It was noted that the application of solutions resulted in alterations to the surface characteristics of the wooden material.

Dynamic Angular Velocity Load-Based Energy Harvesting Analysis for Different Blade Angles and Polarization Directions of Smart Blades

    Uyar, M.

Energy consumption and control of electrical devices in flying electric vehicles with propellers such as drones are important for the continuity of the movement process. With this motivation, the piezoelectric energy harvesting performances of the smart drone propeller and smart wind blades are evaluated in order to obtain electrical energy from lead zirconate titanate (PZT) material placed on the propellers. Initially, the effect of smart wind blades with different blade angles on energy harvesting analysis is examined. The energy harvesting performances of the converse (z polarization) and shearing movements (y polarization) of the PZT material placed on the wind blades are compared under different angular rotational velocities. Then, the power outputs obtained depending on the sensor responses of the smart drone propeller with different resistance gains are evaluated according to the polarization directions. The maximum and minimum power output values obtained from the smart drone propeller at 12,000 rpm rotation velocity are measured as about 0.086 and 0.008 W, respectively. The results show that the energy harvesting performance of the z-polarized smart propeller is more effective than the y polarization, and the amount of energy obtained with the increase in the endpoint vibration amplitudes increases as the rotation speed increases.

Effect of sesame protein/PVA nanofibers on oil separation and rheological properties in sesame paste

    Yuzer, Mustafa Onur; Genccelep, Huseyin

This study aimed to prevent or minimize the oil phase separation that occurs during storage (0-90 days) of sesame paste at room temperature. In order to determine the changes during storage in the sesame paste samples, the zeta potential, rheological properties, and the separated oil ratio were determined. Significant (p < 0.01) effects of applied storage time and additives on the amount of oil separated in sesame pastes were determined. The oil separated in sesame paste samples varied between 3.83% and 16.29%. While the rate of separated oil increased three times in the control group over time, it showed an insignificant (p > 0.05) increase especially in the samples where 2% nanofiber was added. It was determined that the separation of the oil phase from the structure could be prevented up to 24.73% with the addition of SPI and up to 63.02% with addition of SPINL (nanofiber containing protein isolate) compared to the control. Practical applications: During storage, the particles in the sesame paste tend to precipitate, causing oil separation and residue cake, thus negatively affecting the acceptability of consumers. Additives were added in order to prevent or minimize oil phase separation, which occurs in sesame paste stored at room temperature and is not desired by consumers. As additives, nanofibers containing sesame proteins produced by the electrospinning method and sesame protein isolates (SPIs) were added. Added additives acted by preventing the separation of the oil phase from the structure. It has been determined that the addition of SPI to sesame pastes does not completely prevent the problem of oil separation in sesame paste, but is effective in delaying and reducing it. Since the oil decomposition can be reduced, the amount of oil separated and therefore the part that can sink to the bottom will decrease, so sesame paste will be consumed more appropriately and will contribute to the country's economy.
