Tanyeri, Levent; Kirkbir, Hakan; Çinan, Ismet; Yilmaz, Busra; Hacicaferoglu, Serkan
Background and Study Aim Material and Methods Mental endurance is considered akeypsychological component that influences athletic performance, particularly in sports that demand high levels of focus and persistence. The aim of the study was to investigate the level of mental endurance in athletes engaged in canoeing. The sample of the study consisted of 163 voluntary canoe athlete students who were studying in the faculties of sport sciences and doing canoeing as licensed students, selected by simple random sampling method. In order to collect the necessary data in the study, the 'Mental Endurance Scale in Sport' was used. The scale consists of the sub-dimensions 'Trust', 'Continuity', and 'Control'. In the analyses of the data, t-test and ANOVA test were used. Statistically, the level of error p<.05 was accepted as Alpha (alpha). Results As a result of the study, it was determined that there was a significant difference in the control sub-dimension according to the gender variable of the students in the sample. It was found that there was a significant difference in terms of age variable. The students aged between 18-20 years were more self-confident, while the students aged between 21-23 years showed more control and continuity. In the sport branch variable, it was found that there was a significant difference in the 'Trust' and 'Control' sub-dimensions, and the effect value was at a moderate level. It was determined that there was a significant difference in the sub-dimension of confidence in the variable of years of doing sports, and the effect value was at a moderate level. The self-confidence of the students who had been doing sports between 1 and 3 years was higher. Conclusions In addition to the physical training and technical skills-enhancing practices of student athletes in sports schools, it will give positive results to carry out actions to increase mental endurance in order to be ready for sportive activities (competitions, recreative activities, etc.). Especially female students or younger students can be less affected by the negativities that may develop instantly within the framework of the difficulties of the sports branch.

Günes, Huseyin; Okutan, Serafettin; Dolanbay, Nihal; Bostanci, Meric Emre
Purpose: This study was conducted to determine the general anxiety and attitudes of surgical nurses toward artificial intelligence. Method: This study was designed as descriptive and correlational with the participation of 335 surgical nurses working in two different hospitals in the Eastern and Central Anatolia regions of Turkey between 06.02.2025-01.06.2025 dates. Results: The scores obtained from the positive and negative attitude sub-dimensions of the General Attitudes towards Artificial Intelligence Scale are moderate (40.24 +/- 8.94, 23.65 +/- 6.61). The total score of the Artificial Intelligence Anxiety Scale is moderate (46.09 +/- 13.65). A low level of negative correlation was found between the positive attitude scores of the General Attitudes towards Artificial Intelligence Scale and the total scores of the Artificial Intelligence Anxiety Scale (r=-0.239, p<0.001). A high level of positive correlation was found between the negative attitude scores of the General Attitudes towards Artificial Intelligence Scale and the total scores of the Artificial Intelligence Anxiety Scale (r=0.710, p<0.001). In the multiple linear regression model established, it was seen that 53% of the anxiety toward artificial intelligence was explained by the general attitudes towards artificial intelligence variable, which is the independent variable in the model (R2=0.530). Conclusion: As the positive attitudes of surgical nurses toward artificial intelligence increase, their anxiety levels toward artificial intelligence decrease. It is necessary to provide continuous education and support to surgical nurses about artificial intelligence applications.

Morina, Besnik; Visic, Grgur; Antonic, Davorin; Babic, Matej; Sporis, Goran; Franjko, Ivica; Tomac, Zvonimir; Akman, Onur; Miletic, Aleksandar; Krasniqi, Rrezon
Background. Anaerobic and aerobic power are critical factors influencing peak football performance. This study aimed to explore the differential effects of various high-intensity interval training (HIIT) protocols on these performance metrics in senior female football players. Objectives. The primary objective was to investigate the impact of linear (L) HIIT and change-of-direction (COD) HIIT protocols on key velocity at anaerobic threshold (V-AT), distance traveled in the anaerobic zone (d(AT)), and VO(2)max. Methods. Sixty senior female football players were divided into LHIIT (n=30) and COD (n=30). Both groups underwent initial testing before participating in their respective training programs for four weeks. Performance metrics were measured at the beginning and end of the training period. Results. Both groups significantly improved all measured variables (p<0.001). However, the COD group demonstrated relatively more significant enhancements in Vmax (COD=0.93; LHIIT=0.8), VAT (COD=0.94; LHIIT=0.87), and VO(2)max (COD=0.92; LHIIT=0.74). The COD group also reduced the initial difference in VO(2)max to a non-significant level. Conclusion. COD HIIT protocols appear to be slightly more effective in enhancing anaerobic power in female football players than linear HIIT protocols. Nevertheless, both HIIT programs significantly improved performance metrics, indicating that incorporating such training regimens can benefit female football training programs.
- Derleme MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Using synthetic biology to understand the gut-brain axis
Cesaro, Angela; Broset, Esther; Salimando, Gregory J.; Oztekin, Sebahat; Mai, David; Bennett, Mariko L.; de la Fuente-nunez, Cesar
Extensive research supports a pivotal role for the gut-brain axis(i.e., the communication pathway between the bacteria in the gut and the brain) in brain health and disease. The interplay between the gut microbiota and the mammalian nervous system appears to shape both adaptive and dysfunctional neurological processes, as it directly affects neurons and neural signaling, the immune response, and metabolism via its effects on hormones, neuropeptides, and neurotransmitters. This review summarizes key findings from the recent literature focused on the interactions between neurons and gut bacteria. By focusing on synthetic biology tools currently employed to study the gut-brain axis, we can enhance our understanding of neuroactive substances released in the gut and potentially identify select molecular candidates that may facilitate the development of personalized therapies.

Morina, Besnik; Visic, Grgur; Antonic, Davorin; Babic, Matej; Sporis, Goran; Vlahovic, Tomislav; Franic, Miljenko; Franjko, Ivica; Tomac, Zvonimir; Akman, Onur
Background. Coaches predominantly utilize linear training protocols to enhance the aerobic power of football players. However, there is limited data on the effects of change of direction (COD) protocols on aerobic power in football. Objectives. This study aimed to determine which high-intensity interval training (HIIT) program- linear (LHIIT) or change of direction (COD)-has a more significant impact on increasing aerobic power in senior female football players. Methods. Sixty senior female football players were divided into two experimental groups: LHIIT (n=30) and COD (n=30). Both groups underwent a four-week HIIT protocol, with LHIIT involving linear and COD incorporating change-of-direction exercises. Aerobic power was measured using the 30-15 intermittent fitness test (IFT), maximal aerobic velocity (MAV), and VO2max at the beginning and end of the study to assess the differences in aerobic adaptations between the two programs. Results. The results indicated that the COD group eliminated the significant difference in VO2max that initially existed between the two groups, suggesting that COD protocols may be more effective in increasing aerobic power than linear ones. Additionally, both groups significantly improved the 30-15 IFT, MAV, and VO2max. Conclusion. Both linear and change-of-direction HIIT protocols significantly enhance aerobic performance in senior female football players. However, COD protocols may have a more significant impact on VO2max improvement. Future research should explore the potential effects of COD protocols on anaerobic power and seek to identify even more effective HIIT strategies for enhancing VO2max.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ2The effect of kinesiophobia on gastrointestinal disorders in patients with lower extremity orthopedic surgery
Gunes, Huseyin; Bulbuloglu, Semra; Saritas, Serdar; Ozdemir, Ahmet
Background: Postoperative kinesiophobia and gastrointestinal (GI) disorders are common and undesirable conditions following orthopedic surgery. Additionally, managing both conditions is crucial for preventing complications and accelerating recovery. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of kinesiophobia on GI disorders after lower extremity orthopedic surgery. Method: This study was conducted with a descriptive and cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of a total of n = 299 patients who underwent orthopedic surgery in their lower extremities at the orthopedics and traumatology clinic of a research and training hospital located in Turkey. A personal information form, the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia (TSK), and the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS) were used to collect data, and the obtained data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), paired-samples t-test, and post hoc tests when necessary. Results: While 24.4% of the patients were aged 65–74 years, 51.5% were male. The mean total TSK score of the patients was above average (49.36 ± 8.74), while their mean total GSRS score was below average (31.22 ± 11.7). In our study, as kinesiophobia increased, the frequency of bowel movements decreased, and kinesiophobia explained 19.9% of the variance in GI disorders (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Kinesiophobia is a significant predictor of GI disorders in patients who underwent lower extremity surgery. Returning to normal GI function after surgery is crucial for preventing complications in patients with lower extremity surgery. Uncontrolled kinesiophobia after surgery exacerbates GI disorders. Therefore, early diagnosis and management of both kinesiophobia and GI disorders are necessary for rapid recovery in patients with lower extremity surgery. 2025 Gunes, Bulbuloglu, Saritas and Ozdemir.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1The Effect of Self-Regulation on the Need for Psychological Help Through Happiness, Resilience, Problem Solving, Self-Efficacy, and Adjustment: A Parallel Mediation Study in Adolescent Groups
Akeren, İhsan; Çelik, Eyüp; Yayla, İbrahim Erdoğan; Özgöl, Mustafa
Introduction: Adolescence is a developmental period in which the risk of mental problems is high. Failure to resolve the problems encountered during this period may result in the need for psychological help. Based on the literature review, this study aimed to examine self-regulation, which has the potential to reduce adolescents’ need for psychological help, and the mediation of happiness, resilience, problem solving, self-efficacy, and adjustment through this skill. Methods: In the cross-sectional correlational survey design study, 1013 adolescents (542 girls, 471 boys, mean age: 15.04 ± 1.75 years) aged 12–19 years and studying in middle and high school in Bayburt, Turkey were reached. Seven different questionnaires, valid and reliable in adolescent groups, were used to measure the study variables. Results: Correlation results showed that all predictors were positively correlated with each other and negatively correlated with the dependent variable, the need for psychological help. After testing the assumptions, the results of the parallel mediation analysis showed that happiness, problem solving, self-efficacy, and adjustment fully mediated the effect of self-regulation on the need for psychological help. Another finding is that resilience is not a predictor of psychological distress. Conclusions: The results are important because they provide insight for those working in the field of adolescent mental health in terms of understanding the factors through which self-regulation reduces the need for psychological help.

İspirli, Hümeyra; Öztürk, Hale İnci; Dertli, Enes
This study focused on characterization and in situ application of reuterin E81, a potent antimicrobial compound produced by Limosilactobacillus (L.) reuteri E81, in white cheese. Strain E81 harbored the gene island containing pdu-cbi-cob-hem clusters responsible for reuterin production and this led to investigation of reuterin production for this strain. Initially, reuterin was synthesized from glycerol and characterized using NMR and FT-MIR analyses. Specific 1H and 13C NMR peaks confirmed the presence of reuterin components such as 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde and acrolein, while FT-MIR spectra indicated a distinct carbonyl (C=O) stretching band at 1717 cm−1, characteristic of aldehyde groups of reuterin system. Reuterin E81 showed dose dependent fungistatic and bactericidal effects, with complete inhibition of Gram-negative ones at lower doses. In white cheese production, four groups were prepared, including control and experimental groups with or without glycerol addition. The challenge test conducted over 30 days of cold storage demonstrated that white cheese samples containing L. reuteri E81 and glycerol achieved a significant reduction in microbial loads, with Escherichia (E.) coli counts decreasing from 6.4 log CFU/g to undetectable levels, which was attributed to in situ reuterin production. Meanwhile, total aerobic mesophilic bacterial counts declined progressively. These findings highlight the potential of in situ reuterin production as a natural strategy to enhance the microbiological safety of white cheese. However, it also inhibited the growth of S. thermophilus and L. reuteri cultures. The inhibitory effects of reuterin on beneficial lactic acid bacteria suggest the need for further optimization to balance food safety with starter culture viability.

This investigation examined methanol extracts obtained from the whole plant (encompassing all organs except roots), flowers, and fruits of wild Glycyrrhiza glabra var. glandulifera, a liquorice cultivar indigenous to the Cappadocia region of Türkiye, constituting the first comprehensive in vitro and in silico analysis of this species within the region. Anatomical identification revealed distinctive structural characteristics, including thick-walled epidermal cells in the stem, organized clusters of collenchyma cells, and well-defined sclerenchyma layers encompassing the vascular bundles. The petiole exhibited a characteristic heart-shaped morphology containing three vascular bundles, while foliar analysis demonstrated the presence of stomata on both adaxial and abaxial surfaces, accompanied by a bifacial mesophyll arrangement. The extracts demonstrated remarkable antimicrobial efficacy against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as various fungal species. Furthermore, significant cytotoxic activity was observed against non-small cell lung cancer (H460), with the whole plant extract exhibiting IC50 values of 117.8 µg/mL (24 h) and 105.6 µg/mL (48 h). Flower extracts demonstrated IC50 values of 116.8 µg/mL (24 h) and 112.7 µg/mL (48 h), while fruit extracts displayed superior potency with IC50 values of 104.4 µg/mL (24 h) and 63.09 µg/mL (48 h). Molecular docking analyses, conducted utilizing AutoDock Tools 1.5.6 and BIOVIA Discovery Studio Visualizer 4.5, revealed significant protein-ligand interactions, yielding optimal binding energy and inhibition constant values of -9.57 kcal/mol and 96.92 nM, respectively. The RMSD values were calculated based on structural variations between ligand-protein complexes during re-docking procedures. These findings underscore the substantial biological potential of Glycyrrhiza glabra var. glandulifera from Cappadocia, necessitating further comprehensive investigation.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ4Readaptation of the functional reserves of elite mixed martial arts athletes during long-term rehabilitation after musculoskeletal injuries
Savenko, Andrii; Chernozub, Andrii; Turkmen, Mutlu; Olkhovyi, Oleh; Shtefiuk, Ivan; Korchagin, Mukola
Purpose. To study the distinctive characteristics of functional reserve readaptation in elite Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) athletes during long-term rehabilitation after musculoskeletal injuries using various physical therapy protocols. Material & Methods. The study examined 24 elite athletes who sustained musculoskeletal injuries after competitions, predominantly involving the neuromuscular system and limb ligaments. 50 % of the athletes had previously practiced Muay Thai boxing, while the others specialized in Greco-Roman wrestling before MMA. The monitoring of the athletes’ functional reserve readaptation during rehabilitation lasted seven months. The study included four control stages (before injury, and after two, five, and seven months of rehabilitation), each accompanied by a set of test loads designed to evaluate the effectiveness of the readaptation. To assess the adaptive and compensatory responses of the body to the applied loads, a series of blood biomarkers was analyzed, including creatine phosphokinase, lactate dehydrogenase, cortisol, and creatinine. Changes in body composition were tracked using bioimpedance analysis. Results. The most noticeable signs of adaptation failure in elite MMA athletes occurred during the first two months of rehabilitation. Compared to pre-injury data, both groups of athletes showed a decrease in baseline creatine phosphokinase and creatinine levels. This was accompanied by an increase in lactate dehydrogenase activity in their blood serum, marking a significant drop in the body’s functional reserves and overall resistance. During the three-month rehabilitation period, athletes exhibited only partial signs of functional readaptation, despite the implementation of protocols that significantly differed from standard physical therapy approaches. Moreover, a decrease in blood cortisol concentration in response to physical load was detected in both groups, suggesting a low level of resistance and the need for additional energy supply. During the last eight weeks of the seven-month rehabilitation program, exercises replicating 85-90% of MMA technical skills facilitated both the activation and enhancement of functional readaptation. Modifications to the protocols led to an increase in baseline creatinine and creatine phosphokinase levels, along with a decrease in lactate dehydrogenase activity in both groups. Simultaneously, the changes observed in biochemical blood markers in response to the test loads indicated activation of mechanisms supporting short-term adaptation. Conclusions. The findings indicate the limited effectiveness of standard physical therapy protocols in supporting the readaptation of functional reserves among elite MMA athletes during long-term rehabilitation. Despite the high resistance of physiological systems to physical loads recorded before injury, the lack of sufficient muscular activity during the five-month rehabilitation period led to the manifestation of compensatory reactions. Restructuring the rehabilitation protocols with adjusted training loads and exercises simulating 75-80% of combat movements positively influenced the athletes’ recovery. The study results helped to identify and analyze the low effectiveness of functional reserve readaptation observed in many elite MMA athletes during long-term rehabilitation after musculoskeletal injuries.

Erkılıç, Ali Ozan; Bayraktar, Bülent; Erkiliç, Tuğçe Orkun; Türkmen, Mutlu; Kul, Murat; Yönal, Mehmet
The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of Bigorexia nervosa (BGN) levels on endocrine (Asprosin, GLP-1) and cerebral (BDNF) responses and nutritional and physical (6MWT, Six-Minute Walk Test)), speed, metabolic equivalent unit (MET)) performance parameters in students of the faculty of sports sciences. This study investigated muscle dysmorphic disorder (MDD), physical activity levels, and specific hormonal markers in 120 university students (63 females, 57 males) aged 18–25 years, all studying sport sciences and reporting no existing health problems. Participants completed a demographic questionnaire, food frequency questionnaire and the Muscle Dysmorphic Disorder (Bigorexia) Inventory through face-to-face interviews. Physical activity was assessed using the 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) to measure walking distance, and Metabolic Equivalent (MET) was calculated based on the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) formula. Body Mass Index (BMI) was determined from anthropometric measurements of height and body weight. Saliva samples were collected to analyze Asprosin, BDNF, and GLP-1 hormone levels using the ELISA technique.Data were analyzed using number, percentage, mean, chi-square, t-test, Pearson correlation, and ANOVA tests. In all analyses, significance was accepted as p < 0.05. According to the demographic findings of the study, the majority of participants (64.2%) were third-year students, and 52.5% were female. The mean age of the participants was 22.01 years, the mean height was 168.59 cm, and the mean weight was 62.61 kg. 73.3% of the individuals were classified as normal weight, 12.5% as pre-obese, 11.7% as underweight, and 2.5% as obese. Men had significantly higher bigorexia and its subscale scores than women (p < 0.05), and bigorexia was positively correlated with height and negatively correlated with BMI (p < 0.01). Mean salivary BDNF levels were higher in participants consuming 1–2 meals per day (p = 0.035), and mean salivary asprosin levels were significantly higher in the obese group compared to the healthy group (p = 0.008). Additionally, a strong positive correlation was found between asprosin and GLP1 levels (r = 0.585; p < 0.01). Bigorexia status was significantly associated with meat, meat products, and fat consumption (p < 0.05), while no association was found with physical performance parameters such as 6MWT, speed, and MET (p > 0.05). The average MET value was found to be 4.53, indicating that participants generally engaged in moderate-intensity physical activity. In conclusion, examining endocrine (asprosin, GLP-1) and cerebral (BDNF) hormone responses, as well as nutritional and physical performance parameters, according to BGN levels reveals the impact of BGN on physiological and nutritional behaviors. Given the impact of BGN trends on students’ health, examining hormone profiles and their relationships with physical performance and nutrition is believed to significantly contribute to understanding the health problems associated with BGN and developing appropriate interventions.

Apaydın, Emine; Hintistan, Sevilay
Objective: This randomized controlled trial examined the effects of geriatric massage on diabetes-related symptoms and blood parameters in older adults with type 2 diabetes. The study included 59 participants (29 in the geriatric massage group and 30 in the control group). Methods: Data were collected using the Older Adults Information Form, the Diabetes Symptoms Checklist, and the Blood Parameters Monitoring Form. Participants in the intervention group received 30-minute geriatric massage sessions twice weekly for 12 weeks. Statistical analyses included the Shapiro–Wilk test, Mann–Whitney U test, ANOVA, Friedman test, Wilcoxon test, Chi-square test, Fisher–Freeman–Halton test, Greenhouse–Geisser correction, Bonferroni adjustment, and paired and independent t-tests. Results: Compared with the control group, participants receiving geriatric massage showed a significant reduction in diabetes symptoms (p < 0.001), an increase in HDL cholesterol levels, and decreases in other blood parameters (p < 0.05). Discussion: Geriatric massage may help reduce diabetes symptoms and improve selected blood parameters in older adults with type 2 diabetes.

This study aimed to characterize lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) isolated from traditionally produced sucuk for their potential use in starter culture development and food safety applications in fermented meat products. A total of 145 isolates (95 LAB and 50 CoNS) were analyzed through genetic identification, phylogenetic analysis, and assessments of technological properties. Antagonistic activity against Listeria monocytogenes and Staphylococcus aureus was also evaluated, along with antibiotic sensitivity. Among LAB, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum was the most prevalent species (60 isolates), while Staphylococcus xylosus was the predominant CoNS species (24 isolates). The isolates exhibited diverse technological properties and varying levels of antagonistic activity against the tested pathogens. Antibiotic sensitivity tests indicated that 15 selected isolates were negative for antibiotic resistance genes. Overall, this comprehensive characterization provides valuable insights for the development of starter cultures and for enhancing food safety in fermented meat products.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1The effects of self-efficacy in managing the disease and disease adaptation levels of Familial Mediterranean Fever (fmf) patients on satisfaction with life: a web-based cross-sectional study
Demir, Rahime Nur; Kiraç, Ramazan; Kiraç, Fatma Çiftçi
Background: Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) is an auto inflammatory disease often accompanied by fever and serositis attacks in which peritoneum, pleura, synovium, and rarely pericardium are spared. In the study, the effects of self-efficacy in managing the disease and disease adaptation levels of FMF patients on satisfaction with life were examined. Methods: This observational cross-sectional study was conducted using a web-based questionnaire sent via Facebook and Instagram FMF groups between February 1, 2024 and April 25, 2024. The population of this study consisted of patients diagnosed with FMF at least 1 year ago in Türkiye. Findings: The mean self-efficacy score of FMF patients in managing chronic diseases was found to be 4.67. According to the results of the study, physical adaptation was determined to be the highest adaptation in FMF patients. This is followed by psychological adaptation and social adaptation. In general, the scores the patients obtained regarding disease adaptation and its sub-dimensions were found to be close to the average value. The satisfaction with life scores of the patients were found to be below the average. Conclusion: This study revealed that the self-efficacy and disease adaptation levels of FMF patients in Türkiye affect their satisfaction with life.
