Yağanoğlu, Mete; Öztürk, Gürkan; Bozkurt, Ferhat; Bilen, Zeynep; Yetiş Demir, Zühal; Kul, Sinan; Şimşek, Emrah; Kara, Salih; Eygu, Hakan; Altundaş, Necip

The objective of this study is to utilize artificial intelligence techniques for the diagnosis of complications and diseases that may arise after liver transplantation, as well as for the identification of patients in need of transplantation. To achieve this, an interface was developed to collect patient information from Atatürk University Research Hospital, specifically focusing on individuals who have undergone liver transplantation. The collected data were subsequently entered into a comprehensive database. Additionally, relevant patient information was obtained through the hospital’s information processing system, which was used to create a data pool. The classification of data was based on four dependent variables, namely, the presence or absence of death (“exitus”), recurrence location, tumor recurrence, and cause of death. Techniques such as Principal Component Analysis and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) were employed to enhance the performance of the models. Among the various methods employed, the LDA method consistently yielded superior results in terms of accuracy during k-fold cross-validation. Following k-fold cross-validation, the model achieved the highest accuracy of 98% for the dependent variable “exitus”. For the dependent variable “recurrence location”, the highest accuracy obtained after k-fold cross-validation was 91%. Furthermore, the highest accuracy of 99% was achieved for both the dependent variables “tumor recurrence” and “cause of death” after k-fold cross-validation.

Kiratli, Tuncay; Yildirim, Yavuz; Şahin, Cihad; Saritemur, Büşra

This study aimed to investigate the effects of 8 weeks of core and dynamic balance training on reaction speed and agility in A-team basketball players. A total of 29 male basketball players participated in the study, with athletes divided into two groups: experimental (n=14) and control (n=15). The experimental group received core and dynamic balance training three days a week in addition to technical and tactical basketball training for 8 weeks, while the control group received only technical and tactical training for the same duration. Body fat percentage (measured with Tanita BC 418-ma), the lane agility drill, and reactive shuttle run tests were conducted before and after the training as performance measurements. When analyzing the pre-test and post-test results regarding the effects of core and dynamic balance training on the motoric characteristics of players in the Turkish Basketball League, no significant difference was found in the Reactive Shuttle Run test for the experimental group (p<0.05). However, significant differences were observed in both the experimental and control groups for the other tests (p>0.05). The findings indicated that core and dynamic balance exercises, when added to basketball training, did not show an additional effect on the athletes in the experimental group, unlike the control group. However, no difference was found in the results of the Reactive Shuttle Run test between the two groups.

Perceptions of Good Death and Death Literacy Levels of Nurses Working in Palliative Care: A Cross-Sectional Study

Seven, Ahmet; Sari, Ebru Sönmez; Semerci, Vahide

Aim: To determine the perceptions of good death and death literacy levels of Turkish nurses working in palliative care services and the factors affecting their perceptions of good death. Background: Death literacy is defined as the acquisition of the knowledge and skills necessary to understand end-of-life care and contribute to a good death. Methods: For this cross-sectional study, sample consisted of 162 Turkish nurses working in palliative care services. The data were collected using the Socio-demographic Information Form, Good Death Scale (GDS), and Death Literacy Index (DLI). The data were analyzed by Pearson correlation, independent sample t test, and one-way ANOVA. Hierarchical regression analysis was performed to determine the predictors of good death perception. The STROBE checklist was used in the study. Findings: The mean GDS score was 59.53 ± 4.49, and the mean DLI score was 100.70 ± 12.11. It was determined that those who are older, male, married, have worked longer in the clinic, and have knowledge about a good death have higher average scores on the GDS. The models explain 91.8% of the variance in the perception of good death. Discussion: Our study shows that as death literacy increases, nurses’ perceptions of a good death tend to decrease. This situation suggests that as nurses’ knowledge and awareness of death increase, the inadequacies of the healthcare system and the impact of limited resources may cause them to develop a more negative perception. Death literacy in nurses is a new concept, and further studies are needed in different cultures. Conclusions: In the study, it was observed that death literacy levels and good death perceptions of nurses were above average, and as the death literacy level of nurses increased, their good death perceptions decreased. Age, gender, marital status, working time in the clinic and knowledge about good death affect the perception of good death of nurses working in palliative care. Implications for nursing: By improving their understanding of death literacy and the principles of a good death, palliative care nurses can achieve greater job satisfaction and develop a more positive attitude toward end-of-life care. In addition, systematically incorporating death literacy into nursing education curricula and continuing professional development programs, and the establishment of evidence-based clinical guidelines and standard care protocols will improve the quality of palliative care services.

Orthorexia nervosa: an investigation in the context of personality, body image, and physical activity

Genç, Halil İbrahim; Hepsert, Sezgin; Öktem, Tuncay; Kiratli, Tuncay; Yildirim, Yavuz; İlgin, Özgecan

This study aimed to examine the relationship between orthorexia nervosa and body image, physical activity level, and the Big Five personality traits among non-clinical adult individuals. Based on the relational survey model, the research sample consisted of 350 undergraduate students (205 females, 145 males) enrolled in various departments at a public university. A convenience sampling method was used, and participants’ ages ranged from 18 to 30 years (M = 20.64, SD = 2.07). Data were collected using a personal information form, the ORTO-15 Scale, the Big Five Personality Test (short version), the Body Appreciation Scale, and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Pearson correlation and regression analyses were conducted. The findings revealed that conscientiousness, openness to experience, and body image were significantly associated with orthorexic tendencies. As levels of conscientiousness and openness to experience increased, behaviors related to orthorexia nervosa also tended to increase. Similarly, individuals with higher body image satisfaction exhibited more pronounced orthorexic tendencies. These results suggest that individual differences may play a determining role not only in healthy lifestyle choices but also in the potential development of these choices into pathological behaviors.

An examination of performance enhancement attitudes and belief levels regarding sports supplements among students receiving education on ergogenic aids and anti-doping practices

Karakaya, Umut Can; Ceyhan, Mehmet Ali

Background: This study examines the changes in performance enhancement attitudes and sports supplement belief levels among sports sciences faculty students after education on ergogenic aids and anti-doping practices. In the highly competitive environment of modern sports, nutrition and ergogenic aids are crucial in enhancing athletic performance and preventing injuries. However, research in this area is limited, and existing literature emphasizes the need to explore the relationship between education and these topics. Methods: The study employed an experimental design using a one-group pre-test and post-test method. The research group comprised 61 students (24 female and 37 male) from the Faculty of Sport Sciences at Bayburt University. Data collection tools included the “Personal Information Form,” the “Performance Enhancement Attitude Scale (PEAS),” and the “Sports Supplement Belief Scale (SSBS).” Data were collected via Google Forms and analyzed using SPSS 26.0 software. The skewness and kurtosis values were calculated to assess the data distribution, and parametric tests, including t-tests and ANOVA, were applied. Results: The findings revealed that education on ergogenic aids and anti-doping practices significantly improved students’ performance-enhancement attitudes. For example, PEAS scores increased from a pre-test mean of 38.74 to a post-test mean of 44.13 (p < 0.05), representing a change of approximately 13.91%. However, no significant changes were observed in SSBS scores. This suggests that students’ beliefs regarding sports supplements may be shaped by prior knowledge and experiences, making them less influenced by the educational intervention. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that education on ergogenic aids and anti-doping practices can positively influence students’ performance-enhancement attitudes. However, more in-depth educational programs may be required to impact beliefs about sports supplements. These findings can guide the development of more effective educational programs to enhance athletic performance and safeguard athlete health. By providing evidence-based insights, this study significantly contributes to the existing literature and supports the development of policies and educational initiatives in anti-doping and athlete education.

    Özdemir, Mustafa; Yildizlar, Osman

This study investigates pesticide, antibiotic, and heavy metal levels in Bayburt and the Upper Çoruh Valley honey. Thirteen honey samples were collected from different apiaries managed by stationary and migratory beekeepers. These samples were analysed for heavy metals (Fe, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb), antibiotics, pesticides, and chemical residues such as naphthalene. The results revealed that lead (Pb) levels exceeded international food safety standards in 2 honey samples, while pesticide residues were detected in 5 samples. Additionally, antibiotic residues were found in 6 samples, including sulfamethazine, tetracycline, and streptomycin. However, no naphthalene was detected in any of the samples. These findings highlight the importance of stricter regulations and monitoring systems to control chemical use in beekeeping practices. Enhancing awareness among beekeepers regarding the risks associated with pesticide and antibiotic use is crucial for improving honey quality and ensuring the health of beekeepers and consumers. The adoption of safer practices and adherence to guidelines are necessary to mitigate these health hazards.

Chemical composition of essential oils and comparative analysis of enzyme inhibitory, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities in essential oils of endemic Gelasia sericea (Aucher ex DC.) Zaika, Sukhor. & N. Kilian

Fidan, Muhammed Said; Baltacı, Cemalettin; Akmeşe, Osman; Sefalı, Abdurrahman; Aygül, İmdat; Öz, Mehmet

In this study, essential oil from the aerial parts of Gelasia sericea (Aucher ex DC.) Zaika, Sukhor. & N. Kilian was extracted via hydrodistillation using a Clevenger apparatus. GC-MS/FID analysis determined aldehydes (28.31%) as the dominant group, with eucalyptol (8.71%) as the main constituent. Antioxidant activities were exhibited using DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP assays, with the essential oil demonstrating relatively higher antioxidant properties. The essential oil also showed higher levels of bioactive components, including total antioxidant capacity (160.26 mg AA eq./100 mL), total phenolic content (21.57 mg GA eq./100 mL), and total flavonoid content (14.85 mg QE eq./100 mL). While G. sericea essential oil demonstrated some antioxidant activity, it was significantly lower compared to the reference standard ascorbic acid (AA). The antimicrobial results showed relatively higher antimicrobial activity compared to most bacterial and fungal strains, as evidenced by lower MIC and MBC values and larger inhibition zones. Nevertheless, chloramphenicol (CH) and nalidixic acid (NA) continually showed superior antimicrobial efficacy, with the lowest MIC and MBC values and the largest inhibition zones. The essential oil also demonstrated potent enzyme inhibitory activity, especially against CA-II, AChE, and BChE, with the lowest IC50 value observed for CA-II, highlighting its potential as a potent enzyme inhibitor. However, the essential oil exhibited comparatively greater inhibition against AChE, BChE and α-amylase but was less effective overall. These findings suggest that the G. sericea essential oil has important antioxidant potential and enzyme inhibitory activity, while the essential oil shows varying efficacy across different enzymes.

Online software for a new risk assessment method in occupational health and safety: RSCAL

    Ateş, Fatih Mehmet; Doğan, Ömer

Risk assessment is necessary for the safety of employees in the workplace. Risk assessment methods contain some deficiencies arising from the persons performing the analysis. In order to partially overcome this situation, a risk assessment method has been developed by the authors by utilizing the data on occupational accidents in Turkey. In the method, Occupational Health and Safety Professionals who will perform the risk assessment can calculate the risk score without giving a numerical value for any hazard and corresponding risk that they identify in the workplace. In the study, a user-friendly online software called RSCAL by the authors, with a web address of https://rscal.com.tr/, which can meet all the above-mentioned requirements and calculate risk scores for workplaces serving in all types of sectors, has been developed. Through this online application, the identified hazard, risk and exposures of the business to be analyzed can be selected; the necessary corrective and preventive actions can be written by the user and then the risk score can be calculated. After that, all hazards specific to the enterprise can be meticulously identified and the risk assessment of the enterprise can be made by calculating the risk scores. This risk assessment can also be printed out in excel file format. In the future, parameters such as the deadline for each hazard, the legal requirement or standard from which the corrective preventive action to be taken arises can be added to the RSCAL calculation tool.

Effect of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic on beliefs and practices regarding hand hygiene among intensive care nurses: A repeated cross-sectional study

Karadas, Yasemin Ay; Sahin, Sibel Yilmaz; Dönmez, Elif; Temiz, Gamze

Hand hygiene is an important factor in the prevention of healthcare-associated infections. Studies show healthcare professionals' hand hygiene practices vary and are not at sufficient levels. This study aimed to examine the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the beliefs and practices of nurses working in intensive care units (ICU) towards hand hygiene. This was longitudinal, repeated, and cross-sectional study. The study was conducted in 2 phases between January 2,2020 and March 10,2021 in the intensive care unit of a university hospital in northern Turkey. No sampling method was used. The objective was to reach the entire population. The first phase of this study was completed with 119 (76% of the population) ICU nurses and the second phase with 85 (70% of the population) ICU nurses. The data were collected with the personal information form, hand hygiene belief scale (HHBS), hand hygiene practices inventory (HHPI) and the views of the intensive care nurses related to COVID-19. Descriptive statistics such as mean and standard deviations, frequency, and percentages and analytical statistics such as t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test were used for data analysis at the significance level of P < .05. The majority of the nurses who participated in the study were female (75.6%; 69.4%), with a mean age of 30.82 ± 5.51 and 30.58 ± 5.51 years, respectively. There was a significant difference (P < .05) between the median HHBS (P = .002) and HHPI (P = .001) scores before and after COVID-19. All nurses (100%) reported that the pandemic was effective in hand hygiene practices. In this study, it was determined that the hand hygiene beliefs and practices of nurses were high, and the scores of nurses' hand hygiene beliefs and practices after COVID-19 increased significantly. Healthcare professionals must always adhere to stringent standards of hand hygiene, rather than merely during periods of heightened challenges. To ensure the sustainability of optimal hand hygiene practices, it is recommended that motivational interventions that strengthen beliefs and practices related to hand hygiene should be implemented and that studies should be conducted to evaluate their effectiveness.

Semerci Çakmak, Vahide; Sönmez Sari, Ebru; Çetinkaya Özdemir, Serap

Background: Adults with diabetes encounter various challenges related to managing their condition. In this study, we explored the experiences of adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus with low socioeconomic status in Türkiye. Methods: This study was conducted as a phenomenological qualitative research. The purposive sampling method was used to select adults with type 2 diabetes. Data saturation was achieved with 20 patients. The data were collected through a demographic information form and a semi-structured questionnaire. The participants were interviewed by phone. The interviews were conducted in a quiet environment where the participants could respond comfortably. During the data analysis process, the content analysis approach suggested by Graneheim and Lundman (2004) was used. This method involves identifying meaningful units within the text, coding these units, and developing sub-themes and main themes. The MAXQDA 20 software was used for data management. Results: The participants were between 41 and 71 years old. Four main themes and ten subthemes were identified in the analysis. Themes: The identified themes included difficulties with dietary management of diabetes, individual difficulties, difficulties with self-management in diabetes, and coping strategies. According to Theme 1, it was observed that the participants experienced difficulties in managing nutrition in diabetes due to the economic aspect of diet and the inability to adapt to the diet. According to Theme 2, it was observed that the participants faced physical, psychological, and social difficulties. According to Theme 3, it was observed that the participants faced difficulties related to diabetes self-management, including blood glucose monitoring, insulin injection administration, and maintaining glycemic control.” According to Theme 4, it was observed that the participants attempted to cope with diabetes-related difficulties through healthy lifestyle habits and family support. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that adults with type 2 diabetes in low socioeconomic status face challenges related to biopsychosocial factors, nutrition, and diabetes self-management. However, these individuals managed their difficulties by adopting healthy lifestyle behaviors and relying on family support. The challenges faced by adults with diabetes may be alleviated through awareness training on dietary management and glycemic control.

Imagery and motivation in performance sports: a psychological study on weightlifters

Aksoy, Ebu Bekir Sıddık; Ceyhan, Mehmet Ali

Background: This study investigates the relationship between imagery use and motivation among weightlifters, focusing on how demographic factors like gender, education level, and national status influence these aspects. Imagery, a mental strategy used to achieve goals and motivation, an intrinsic driving force, is explored within weightlifting. Despite research linking mental strategies to performance, studies targeting weightlifters still need to be expanded. This study examines how imagery impacts this group’s motivation levels and technical performance. Methods: The study included 347 licensed athletes participating in the 2022 Turkish Individual Junior and U-23 Weightlifting Championship in Van. Data were collected online using the “Personal Information Form,” the “Sport Imagery Questionnaire,” and the “Sport Motivation Scale.” Analyses were conducted with SPSS, assessing normality through skewness and kurtosis. Parametric tests, such as t-tests and one-way ANOVA, were applied for group comparisons. At the same time, Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient was used to explore relationships between continuous variables, including age, years of experience, and competition weight category. Results: A significant positive correlation was found between imagery use and motivation, particularly in the Cognitive Imagery (CI), Motivational Specific Imagery (MSI), and Motivational General-Mastery (MGM) subdimensions. Education level significantly influenced imagery use and motivation, with higher levels linked to better mental training and increased motivation. Although gender did not significantly affect these factors, female athletes displayed more robust emotional responses, enhancing their ability to use positive emotions effectively. Age and sports experience were also positively associated with effective imagery use, indicating that experienced athletes leverage mental strategies more proficiently. Conclusions: The findings emphasize imagery as a vital tool for enhancing motivation and performance in weightlifters. Athletes with higher education levels and more experience benefit more from mental training. Future research should broaden its scope to include diverse sports and age groups, while longitudinal studies can provide deeper insights into the evolution of imagery and motivation over time.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of laughter yoga on hemodialysis patients' disease acceptance, treatment adherence and comfort levels. This randomized controlled study was conducted with 42 patients (experimental group=21, control group=21) who were treated in the hemodialysis unit. Hemodialysis patients in the experimental group received 12 sessions of laughter yoga for four weeks, three days a week. Data were collected using Patient Information Form, Disease Acceptance Scale, End-Stage Renal Disease Adherence Questionnaire, and Hemodialysis Comfort Scale. A significant difference was found between the disease acceptance scale (t(41) = 4.39, p < 0.001, d = 1.364), end-stage renal failure adaptation scale (t(41) = 2.69, p = 0.010, d = 0.830) and hemodialysis comfort scale (t(41) = 5.58, p = 0.010, d = 1.710) of hemodialysis patients who underwent laughter yoga. In addition for the Disease Acceptance Scale, the SD of the pre-test scores was 7.51. Accordingly, the MCID thresholds were calculated as 3.75 (0.5 SD), 3.11 (1 SEM), and 6.09 (1.96 SEM). For the End-Stage Renal Disease Adherence Questionnaire, the SD was 178.79, and the MCID was calculated as 89.40 (0.5 SD), 63.47 (1 SEM), and 124.39 (1.96 SEM). For the Hemodialysis Comfort Scale, the SD was 6.43, resulting in MCID estimates of 3.21 (0.5 SD), 2.01 (1 SEM), and 3.94 (1.96 SEM). Laughter yoga practiced during hemodialysis increased acceptance of the disease, adherence to treatment, and comfort (p < 0.05). In contrast, no statistically significant difference was found in the control group (p > 0.05). Increasing hemodialysis patients' acceptance of the disease, adherence to treatment, and comfort levels ensure the successful continuation of the disease management process. The practice of laughter yoga in clinics during hemodialysis sessions is recommended to increase disease acceptance, adherence to treatment and comfort levels.

Prostate cancer (PC) is the most frequent cancer in males, as well as the second highest cause of cancer-related deaths in men. Differences in expression levels of miRNAs were linked with prostat cancer pathogenesis. qPCR was used to evaluate the expression of miR-130b-3p and miR-375 in Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH (n = 20) and PC (n = 22, pre- and post-operative) patients plasma. Relative telomere lengths (RLTs) in genomic DNA isolated from plasma were measured with qPCR, and telomerase activity analyzed by the ELISA method. PSA levels of PC patients were greater than of BPH patients (p = 0.0473). miR-130b-3p and miR-375 levels were significantly lower in pre-operative specimens of PC patients according to BPH (p = 0,0362, p = 0.0168, respectively). Similarly, post-operative miR-375 levels were lower in PC patients than in BPH patients (p = 0.1866). BPH patients had shorter RTLs than PC patients in both pre- (p=0.0438) and post-operative (p=0.0297) specimens. Telomerase activity was higher in PC patients than BPH(p = 0.0129). Interestingly, telomerase activity was further increased after surgery (p = 0.0003). We aim to identify the levels of miR-130b-3p and miR-375 expression and their relationship with telomerase activity in PC patients. Our data suggest that miRNAs and telomere length (TL) with telomerase activity may play a role in regulating prostate tumorgenesis and may be used as biomarkers for PC diagnosis.

Background Information: The primary objectives of this study were to characterize 3,5-dibromosalicylaldehyde (3,5-DBSA) and, investigate its antiproliferative, antimetastatic, cytotoxic, and immunoregulatory properties. NMR, Raman, UV, and FT-IR spectroscopies were used to characterize 3,5-DBSA. Potential conformations of 3,5-DBSA were evaluated using Spartan's MMFF method. Geometry optimization calculations using Gaussian software calculated conformation energy values. Results: Subsequently, Raman, FT-IR, UV (ethanol) and NMR (DMSO) parameters were calculated. The experimental spectrum was compared to theoretical spectroscopic data. The present investigation investigated 3,5-DBSA's anticancer properties; therefore, docking was done once the stable structure had been identified. Conclusion: Identifying stable structure is crucial to molecular docking studies. In order to identify the mechanism by which 3,5-DBSA binds to PI3K as a therapeutic target, molecular docking was utilized. This work is the first to show that 3,5-DBSA is cytotoxic, anticlonogenic, antimetastatic, and immunomodulatory in glioblastoma cell line U87MG compared to healthy fibroblast L929 cells. Cytotoxicity and anti-clonogenicity studies investigated 3,5-DBSA's antiproliferative activities, whereas wound healing assays assessed cell migration. The immunomodulatory effects of 3,5-DBSA in glioblastoma were assessed by measuring Netrin-1 and IL-6 protein levels. According to our findings, 3,5-DBSA may treat glioblastoma. Significance: This work analyzes 3,5-DBSA's conformational search, characterization, molecular docking, and structural and anticancer properties.

Background: To determine the effect of the health literacy levels of caregivers of individuals with T2DM on caregiving activities and supportive behaviours. Methods: Cross sectional study. The sample for the study comprised of people who provided care for 442 individuals who were diagnosed with diabetes. The data were collected using the Personal Information Form, HLS-14 and D-CASS. Descriptive statistics, Independent samples t test, One-Way ANOVA and multiple linear regression analysis were used to analyse the data. Results: According to the results of the multiple linear regression analysis, the model was found to be statistically significant, and the variables that were incorporated into the model were able to explain 68.1% of the variance. Among the variables included in the model, HLS-14, educational status, employment status, income status and diabetes-related education were found to affect the care activities and supportive behaviours of caregivers of individuals with diabetes. Conclusion: In the research, it was determined that care activities and supportive behaviours were higher in those with higher levels of HL, higher levels of education, those who were not employed, those with higher income levels, and those who received education about diabetes. Nurses should develop training programmes to increase the HL levels of caregivers.
