Metabolic syndrome index measurement tool (MSI): scale development, reliability and validity study

    Akeren, Zahide; Apaydın, Emine

Aim: Identifying the risks of metabolic syndrome (MetS) can lead to early targeted interventions and thus contribute to improved quality of life by reducing the risk of developing MetS, diabetes or heart disease in the future. We aimed to develop a valid and reliable measurement tool to measure the MetS risk of the population. Materials and methods: In the methodological study, an item pool was created by reviewing the literature. Pre-application was performed after the weighting of the items whose content validity was ensured by taking expert opinions. Data were collected from 43 patients with MetS from a state hospital affiliated to the Ministry of Health and 405 individuals without MetS from the community, from a total of 448 individuals using the Individual Information Form, Finnish Diabetes Risk Scale (FINDRISC) and Metabolic Syndrome Index (MSI). The data obtained were evaluated using SPSS 22.0 and MedCalc 19.1 statistical programmes. Scale discrimination was analyzed by independent samples t-test between the upper and lower 27% groups. The cut-off point of the scale score in predicting the diagnosis of MetS was tested by ROC analysis. Correlation analysis was performed with the parallel form for criterion validity. Results: As a result of the ROC analysis, a perfectly compatible scale with a sensitivity of 100%, a specificity of 85.43% and a cut-off score of 48 was obtained. When the correlation analyses between MSI and FINDRISC scores were examined for criterion validity, a positive moderate (r = 0.632, p < 0.001) correlation was found between FINDRISC and MSI. When the discrimination of the scale was analysed, it was found that there was a significant difference between the lower 27% and upper 27% groups (p < 0.05) and it was revealed that the MSI made sensitive measurements to discriminate. Conclusions: The MSI scale is a valid and reliable tool for early detection of MetS risk.

Attitudes of physical education teachers in inclusive schools towards teaching autistic students: a phenomenological study

Oğur, Yekta Göksel; Yarımkaya, Erkan; Aydemir, Uğur; Kul, Murat

With the increasing presence of autistic students in inclusive schools, understanding the attitudes of physical education (PE) teachers towards teaching these students has become important. The current study aimed to examine the attitudes of PE teachers in inclusive schools towards teaching autistic students using the theory of planned behavior. The participants of this phenomenological-qualitative study were 16 PE teachers who participated in one-on-one semi-structured telephone interviews. The interviews were transcribed for analysis and later analyzed using thematic line-by-line analysis. The findings revealed that the majority of PE teachers in inclusive schools had negative attitudes towards teaching autistic students. Barriers and challenges during teaching autistic students were more dominant for PE teachers than facilitators. The results highlighted the importance of addressing the barriers and challenges that limit the quality of PE teachers’ teaching experiences with autistic students as a way to improve PE teachers’ attitudes and indicated the need to establish an adapted PE teacher definition, especially in countries such as Türkiye.

Examination of trauma levels and earthquake stress coping strategies of university students who exercise and do not exercise after an earthquake

Çakır, Zekai; Erbaş, Ülfet; Gönen, Mevlüt; Ceyhan, Mehmet Ali; Öktem, Tuncay; Kul, Murat; Dilek, Ahmet Naci; Güzel, Sema

Background: Earthquakes are calamities of devastating nature that induce longterm post traumatic stress on affected victims. As such, they are recognized worldwide as being huge sources of stress. In this research study, the first objective is to assess the level of trauma and earthquake stress of university students who exercise and those who do not. Methods: This study utilized the descriptive survey research method. The sample comprised 378 male and 300 female students who experienced the socially detrimental 7.7 Mw and 7.6 Mw earthquakes in Turkey on February 6, 2023. The data were both face-to-face and via computer-administered questionnaire with the tools of “Post-Earthquake Trauma Level Scale” and “Earthquake Stress Coping Strategies Scale.” After checking for normality, the parametric tests were used, the t-test to compare two groups of data, and ANOVA for three or more groups of data. Furthermore, Pearson correlation analyses were performed to compare the interactions between students who exercise and those who do not. Results: The study found that gender affected trauma levels, with female students (X = 73.483) exhibiting significantly higher trauma levels than male students (X = 68.799) (p < 0.001). Students who engaged in regular physical activity (X = 67.71) were found to have lower trauma levels compared to those who did not exercise (X = 71.97). Participants who feared being caught by the earthquake at home or school (X = 73.32), experienced the loss of someone close (X = 88.10) or believed that adequate precautions against the earthquake had not been taken (X = 71.73) had higher trauma scores. According to the results of the ANOVA test, students from the Departments of Sports Sciences (X = 69.78) and Religious Studies (X = 69.63) were observed to have lower trauma levels. Pearson correlation analysis showed a positive and moderate relationship between trauma levels and earthquake stress coping strategies among students who engaged in regular physical activity (r =.176, p < 0.01). Conclusions: The research identified that factors such as gender, regular exercise, the experience of losing a loved one, and the perception that insufficient precautions were taken all significantly influence trauma levels. Moreover, the findings highlighted that regular physical exercise serves as an effective strategy for managing and coping with trauma.

Experiences of Nurse Managers in the 2023 Kahramanmaras, Turkey Earthquakes: A Qualitative Study

Koroglu Kaba, Nagihan; Bal, Betul; Ozturk, Havva

BACKGROUND: Nurse managers play a critical role in disaster response and management; yet research on their experiences in earthquakes remains limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the experiences of nurse managers in the Kahramanmaras, Turkey, earthquakes. METHODS: A phenomenological approach was used to guide this study, exploring the lived experiences of nurse managers who worked during the 2023 earthquakes in Kahramanmaras, Turkey. Purposive sampling identified participants, and data were collected 2-3 months postearthquake, from April to May 2023, via semi-structured interviews conducted via social media. Thematic analysis was applied to analyze the interview data. RESULTS: A total of 11 nurse managers were interviewed for the study. Fifty-five percent were between the ages of 35 and 44, 64% were female and had a bachelor's degree. Five themes emerged from the data: "being unprepared"(predisaster phase), "emotional difficulties,""communication and coordination issues,""resource shortages"(disaster event phase), and "evaluation and professional satisfaction"(postdisaster phase). CONCLUSION: The study found that most nurse managers reported feeling unprepared for the earthquake despite institutional disaster management practices. They struggled with managing their emotions, resource shortages, and communication-coordination issues. These experiences underscore the need for enhanced disaster training and preparedness for nurses. Collaboration among international health organizations, nongovernmental organizations, and governments is essential to develop disaster management plans to optimize nurses as early responders.

Uzunçakmak, Sevgi Karabulut; Özcan, Halil; Dirican, Ebubekir

Objective The aim herein was to investigate mitochondrial cytochrome B (MT-CYB) mutations in individuals with bipolar disorder. Stanniocalcin-1 (STC1) and uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2) mRNA expressions and their relationship with clinical data and each other were also investigated. Method The blood samples of 100 individuals were included in this study. Real-time PCR was used to evaluate mRNA expressions of STC1 and UCP2. Genetic alterations were investigated via Sanger DNA sequencing. An in silico analysis was performed to reveal the phenotypic effects of MT-CYB mutations. Results In the MT-CYB gene of the bipolar disorder patients, the most seen mutations were the T194A A>G mutation at position 1532, G deletion at position 15498, and C>A L236I mutation at position 15452. Most of the mutations appeared to be neutral or benign. The UCP2 and STC1 mRNA expression levels were significantly higher in the patients than in the healthy controls (P = 0.0124 and P < 0.0001, respectively). The area under the curve values of the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis for UCP2 and STC1 were 0.6631 (P = 0.0123) and 0.8059 (P < 0.0001), respectively. No significant relationship was observed between the gene expressions and the routine laboratory findings. There was a positive correlation between the UCP2 and STC1 mRNA expressions in the bipolar disorder patients (r = 0.03559, P = 0.0306). Conclusion Expression of UCP2 and STC1 may be important parameters in bipolar disorder. MT-CYB mutations may be related to gene expressions. Comprehensive studies on bipolar disorder will help better understand UCP2 and STC1 gene functions.

Examining the Relationship Between Boxers' Sports Achievement Goals and Sports Anxiety Levels

    Akyuz, Hayri; Zeze, Bahar

Purpose. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between boxers' goal of success in sports and their levels of sports anxiety and to determine whether their goal of success in sports and their levels of sports anxiety differ according to demographic variables. Material & Methods. The research was conducted within the framework of descriptive and relational screening model methods. The population of the research consists of boxers who participated in the Turkish Individual Boxing Championship held in Bayburt province between June 28, 2025 and July 6, 2025. The research sample consists of n: 370 people selected from this population using simple random sampling method. Data collection tools included the "Personal Information Form", the "Sports Achievement Goal Scale (SAGS)", and the "Sports Anxiety Scale-2 (SAS)." Data were analyzed using the SPSS 27.0 program. The normality of the data distribution was assessed using kurtosis and skewness tests, concluding that the data followed a normal distribution. Furthermore, reliability analysis of the scale sub-dimensions and total scores indicated that both were reliable. Descriptive statistics included frequency, mean, and standard deviation; t-tests and ANOVA were used to examine differences between variables; and Pearson Correlation Test was used to analyze relationships between variables. Tukey test was applied for multiple comparisons. Significance value (p<0.05) was considered in the data analysis. Results. According to the t-test results, significant differences were found between the boxers' gender variable and the SAGS total scores and sub-dimensions in favor of male boxers (p<0.05). However, no significant difference was found between the international degree status variable and the scale total scores and sub-dimensions (p>0.05). On the other hand, significant differences were found between the boxers' sport category variable and the SAGS total scores and sub-dimensions in the ANOVA test results (p<0.05). Furthermore, the correlation test results revealed no correlation between the participants' age and sport age variables and the scale sub-dimensions and total scores (p>0.05). In addition, a low-level, negative, and significant correlation was found between the weight class variable and the total scores and subdimensions of the SAGS (p<0.05). Moreover, a low-level, positive, and significant correlation was found between the participants' weekly sport activity duration variable and the "somatic" sub-dimension of the SAS (p<0.05). Conclusions. Finally, low, moderate, and high-level positive correlations were found between the scale sub-dimensions and total scores. In conclusion, it can be said that as boxers' sports anxiety levels increase, their achievement goals in sports also increase. The findings indicate that boxers’ achievement goal orientations are important psychological determinants of competitive anxiety levels. These results provide important practical implications for training planning, psychological support practices, and particularly for rehabilitation-oriented interventions aimed at anxiety regulation. Taking achievement goal orientations into account may contribute to reducing injury risk, supporting recovery processes, and promoting long-term athlete health.

Perceived social support and school engagement in sports science students: The moderated mediation of school alienation and social media addiction

Esentürk, Oğuz Kaan; Seçer, Emrah; Yarimkaya, Erkan; İlhan, Ekrem Levent

Introduction and Purpose: This study investigated how sports science university students perceive social support (PSS), its influence on their academic engagement, and the mechanisms that mediate this relationship. Methodology: A total of 466 students (316 males, 150 females) from the Faculty of Sports Sciences participated in the study, which used a relational screening model. Data were collected using the Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale, the University Students School Engagement Scale, the School Alienation Scale, and the Social Media Addiction Scale. The measurement model was validated through confirmatory factor analysis, followed by correlation testing and regression analysis using the Bootstrap method to evaluate the study's hypotheses. Results: The analysis identified a positive correlation between PSS and school engagement (SE) (r = 0.45, p < 0.001). In contrast, PSS showed negative correlations with both school alienation (SA) (r =-0.209, p < 0.01) and social media addiction (SMA) (r = −0.113, p < 0.01) (Hypothesis I). Regression analysis using the Bootstrap method revealed a significant indirect effect of PSS on SE via SA (Hypothesis II) [β = 0.181, p < 0.001, 95% Confıdence Interval (CI) = (0.003, 0.039)]. Additionally, SMA moderated the indirect effect of PSS on SE via SA (Hypothesis III) [Situational mediator index = −0.018, Boot SE = 0.001, Boot 95% CI = (−0.003, −0.0001)]. The indirect effect was stronger for individuals with low SMA [Indirect effect = 0.034, Boot SE = 0.182, Boot 95% CI = (0.007, 0.078)] compared to those with high SMA [Indirect effect = 0.018, Boot SE = 0.009, Boot 95% CI = (0.005, 0.0416)]. Conclusion: The findings support all three hypotheses in the study's theoretical framework, confirming the proposed relationships and underlying mechanisms.

Breaking the silence on late-life depression: uncovering the drivers of help-seeking in Türkiye’s ageing population

Ercan, Uğur; Apaydın, Emine; Alkan, Ömer

Background: Due to the prevalence of physical health issues among older adults, depression remains a significant health concern, which is often overlooked. Understanding the factors influencing the likelihood of seeking psychological support plays an important role in effectively managing depression in later life, where psychological support has a crucial role. This study aims to examine the factors associated with the likelihood of receiving psychological support among individuals aged 60 years and older experiencing depression in Türkiye. Methods: This study used microdata from the Türkiye Health Surveys conducted by Turkish Statistical Institute in 2016, 2019, and 2022. Gompit, binary logistic regression, and CHAID analyses were used to identify variables associated with psychological support-seeking behavior among older adults with depression. Results: The analysis revealed that general health status, illness status, gender, education level, and difficulty in healthcare payment significantly influenced the likelihood of receiving psychological support among older adults with depression. Conclusion: The results achieved in this study indicate that among older adults experiencing depression, women, those with higher educational levels, and those with existing illnesses are more likely to seek psychological support. Based on these results, it is recommended to develop educational programs to raise societal awareness about the importance of psychological support and to inform health policies accordingly.

Enzyme inhibitory, antioxidant, antimicrobial activities, and phenolic profiles of the methanol extract of Gelasia sericea an endemic species

AYGÜL, İmdat; AKMEŞE, Osman; SEFALI, Abdurrahman; BALTACI, Cemalettin; ÖZ, Mehmet; FIDAN, Muhammed Said

This study aimed to investigate, for the first time, the phytochemical composition, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and enzyme inhibitory properties of the methanolic extract of Gelasia sericea (Aucher ex DC.) Zaika, Sukhor. & N.Kilian. The extract demonstrated a moderate yield (6.55 g/100 g dry plant material) and was found to be rich in phenolic acids, particularly ferulic acid (17182.97 μg g-1), followed by caffeic acid, protocatechuic acid, and p-coumaric acid. Antioxidant analyses revealed high total phenolic (388.86 mg GA eq./100 g), total flavonoid (74.03 mg QE eq./100 g), and total antioxidant capacity (503.33 mg AA eq./100 g). The extract exhibited remarkable ABTS radical scavenging activity (95.99%, IC50 = 37.59 mg ml-1) and considerable ferric-ion reducing power (974.78 mg FeSO4 eq./100 g). Antimicrobial assays indicated moderate inhibitory effects, with stronger activity against Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis) and the yeast Candida albicans, whereas Gram-negative bacteria were less susceptible. The extract’s MIC values ranged between 0.20-3.25 mg ml-1, and MLC values between 0.41-6.50 mg ml-1, which were higher than those of standard antibiotics. Enzyme inhibition assays revealed moderate activity against carbonic anhydrase II (IC50 = 0.0136 µg ml-1) and weak inhibition of cholinesterases and α-glucosidase, while α-amylase inhibition was relatively more pronounced (IC50 = 13350.00 µg ml-1). Overall, these findings highlight G. sericea as a valuable natural source of phenolic acids and antioxidants, with promising potential for applications in functional foods, nutraceuticals, and phytopharmaceuticals. However, the relatively limited antimicrobial and enzyme inhibitory activities suggest the need for further studies on bioavailability, in vivo efficacy, and compound isolation to optimize its practical applications.

The Effect of Self-Regulated Learning-Based Practices on Writing Anxiety: A Curriculum-Focused Mixed Study

Kaplan, Kadir; Akeren, İhsan; Gülden, Bahadır

Anxiety is part of daily life, and when it is not controlled, it negatively affects performance and success. One type of anxiety that students experience at school as a result of the pressures of educational life is writing anxiety. In the current study, the role of self-regulated learning skills in reducing writing anxiety was examined. The fifth-grade self-regulated writing program (S-rWP) was developed, tested, and revised to align with the text types specified in the native language (L1) course curriculum. A multi-stage random sampling method was used to determine the participants to whom the final program would be applied, and the mean pre-test writing anxiety scores of the two groups, an experimental group and a control group, were close to each other. An instructor trained in self-regulated learning strategies conducted the seven-session program to the experimental group for 6 weeks, while in the same period the same curriculum was conducted to the control group using the traditional teaching method, and finally post-test measurements were taken. Quantitative data from the mixed-method study showed that S-rWP was effective in reducing writing anxiety compared to the standard teaching method. Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews with the participants, the L1 teacher and the instructor. The results show that S-rWP is effective in reducing writing anxiety, in line with the quantitative findings. The participants provided information to support the findings through their opinions, and the L1 teacher and instructor provided information to support the findings through their observations. The results appear to stem from the overlap between students’ writing planning, implementation, and evaluation processes and the three stages of self-regulated learning (forethought, performance, and self-reflection). However, despite these positive outcomes, several suggestions for future research are proposed, taking into account the study’s limitations. © The Author(s) 2025. A qualitative study on Turkey's earthquakes, the century's catastrophe: Perspectives and coping methods of surviving nursing students

    Sönmez Sari, Ebru; Terzi, Handan

Aim: To understand the experiences and coping strategies of nursing students who were impacted by Turkey's once-in-a-century catastrophic earthquakes in 2023. Background: Nursing students rarely experience a disaster in person, and their imagination can be limited. Methods: This study used a descriptive-qualitative study design. It was conducted with 17 first-year nursing students, studying at a university in the northeastern part of Turkey, who survived the earthquake. A personal information form and a semistructured questionnaire were used to collect the data. The data were collected between March and April 2023 and analyzed using the content analysis method and the MaXQDA programme. Results: The data were grouped into three main themes—“What ‘earthquake’ was and what it is now?,” “Am I aware of the ‘earthquake’ now?,” and “Coping mechanisms and supporting systems”—and categorized into seven subthemes. Conclusions: The experiences of earthquake-affected nursing students emphasized the importance of being prepared for disasters and meeting their emotional needs. Implications for nursing practice and policies: Including specific courses and case studies regarding disasters, whether natural or human-made, in education programs can ensure better prepared nurses. Also, the integration of content about management and coping with such crises into nursing curricula is considered vital.

Death anxiety and death literacy among Turkish patients with chronic diseases: a cross-sectional study

Semerci Çakmak, Vahide; Seven, Ahmet; Sönmez Sari, Ebru

Background: Death anxiety is common in patients with chronic diseases. Death literacy is a novel theoretical framework that enables patients to discuss death, accept it as a natural aspect of life, and get a deeper comprehension of it. However, it is unclear whether there is a relationship between death literacy and death anxiety. Furthermore, death literacy has not been sufficiently researched in Turkish society. This study investigated the levels of death anxiety and death literacy among Turkish patients with chronic diseases and the factors affecting death anxiety. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of Turkish patients with chronic diseases (n = 225). The data were collected with the Turkish Death Anxiety Scale and the Death Literacy Index. Pearson correlation, independent samples t test, One-Way ANOVA, and multiple linear regression were employed to analyse the data. Results: There exists a negative moderate correlation between death anxiety and death literacy. It has been determined that the factors that most influence patients’ fear of death are their level of death literacy and gender. These factors explained 12.8% of the variance in death anxiety (R2 = 0.128, F = 3.153, p < 0.001). Conclusions: The results suggest that death literacy level and gender were found to be factors affecting death anxiety of patients. Women have higher death anxiety scores. While the level of death literacy of Turkish patients with chronic diseases increases, their death anxiety decreases. The findings of the study were believed to offer a comprehensive information for healthcare practitioners in the management of such patients.

Effect of Graviola Oil Extract on Anti-obesity Effect and Adipokine (Apelin and Adiponectin) Response in High Fat Diet-induced Obese Rats

    Erkılıç, T. Orkun; Bayraktar, B.

Background: This study aims to investigate the anti-obesity effect of GOE with adipokine (apelin and adiponectin) response at different doses (100 and 200 mg/kg) of GOE in normal healthy and obese rats with High-fat diet (HF). Methods: In this study, 36 adult male Wistar albino rats, aged between 8-10 weeks, were used. 6 groups were created, with 6 rats in each group: Control (C), Rat group without GOE and HF application, G100 (GOE 100 mg/kg group given with oral gavage route of administration (OGRA), G200 (GOE 200 mg/kg group given with OGRA), HFC (HF control group): no HF and no GOE group), HF100 (rats receiving HF were 100 mg/kg graviola oil extract added to their diet), HF200 (rats receiving HF were 200 mg/kg graviola oil extract added to their diet). Blood samples were taken from the tail vein (vena caudalis) of all on days 0 and 60 of the study. Apelin and adiponectin levels in the serum samples were measured by ELISA method. Result: In the present study, a significant increase (p<0.01) was observed in the mean serum apelin level in the HF groups at the end of the 60 day after HF induction, while a significant decrease (p<0.01) was also detected in the adiponectin level. On the other hand, when examined in terms of BW, the most significant decrease due to GOE addition in the HF groups, i.e. the anti-obesity effect, was determined in the HFG200 mg/kg group (p<0.01). As a result, it was concluded that GOE may be safe and beneficial when administered at a dose of 200 mg/kg in obesity-induced rats.

Investigation of life satisfaction and spiritual well-being of living liver donors in Turkey

Gunes, Hüseyin; Bulbuloglu, Semra; Saritas, Serdar

Spiritual well-being may be among the most common feelings felt by living liver donors. The feeling that pushes an individual to good behavior may be spiritual well-being, and the feeling that emerges as a result of achieving goodness may be life satisfaction. In our study, we aimed to analyze the spiritual well-being and life satisfaction of living liver donors and to examine the relationship, if any, between spiritual well-being and life satisfaction. Our descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 306 living liver donors (n = 306). In the data collection process, we used a personal information form, the Spiritual Well-Being Scale, and the Satisfaction with Life Scale. In data analysis, we utilized descriptive statistical methods, one-way analysis of variance. Of all living liver donors participating in this study, 37.3% were aged 41–50 years, 73.5% were female, and 53.9% donated their liver to their spouse or child. The predictor variable of spiritual well-being was found to account for approximately 29% of the total variance in the predicted variable of life satisfaction. There was a positive and strong correlation between spiritual well-being and life satisfaction of living liver donors (p < 0.05). Spiritual well-being and life satisfaction of living liver donors are positively affected by each other. In order to provide more psychosocial support to these heroes who disregard their own health and try to save others’ lives, it is best practice to support their spiritual well-being, increase their life satisfaction and develop awareness about these two values. The Relationship Between Metacognitive Beliefs and Salivary Cortisol, BDNF, and NDNF Levels: A Cross-Sectional Study

Okur, Süheyb; Bayraktar, Bülent; Tosun Köse, Fatma

Purpose: The main objective of this study is to non-invasively investigate the relationship between metacognitive beliefs and cortisol, the primary stress output of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, as well as neurotrophic factors associated with neuroplasticity brain-derived neurotrophic factor and neuron-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF and NDNF). Within this framework, the hypotheses that negative metacognitions would be associated with increased cortisol and decreased BDNF levels, and that cortisol might play a mediating role in this relationship, were tested. Method: The study was designed in a cross-sectional model with 60 university students. Participants' metacognitive beliefs were measured using the Metacognitions Questionnaire-30 (MCQ-30). Salivary cortisol, BDNF, and NDNF levels were analyzed using the ELISA method. Pearson correlation and hierarchical multiple regression analyses were used for data analysis. Finding: The results showed a significant positive relationship between the total metacognition score and cortisol (r = 0.589, p < 0.01) and a strong negative relationship between cortisol and BDNF (r = −0.662, p < 0.01). Hierarchical regression analysis supported a partial mediation model, indicating that dysfunctional metacognitive beliefs have both a significant direct negative association with BDNF and an indirect association mediated by cortisol. In the final model, both metacognition (β = –0.298, p < 0.05) and cortisol (β = –0.281, p < 0.05) were significant factors associated with lower BDNF levels. NDNF showed a positive relationship with BDNF (r = 0.571) but not with other variables. Conclusion: These findings point to a psychobiological model where dysfunctional metacognitive beliefs are linked to suppressed neuroprotective mechanisms like BDNF, both directly and indirectly through HPA axis activation. The results shed light on the potential neurobiological mechanisms underlying the effectiveness of metacognitive therapies.

Comparison of the acute effects of static and dynamic stretching exercises on the balance performance of Turkish wrestlers

Durukan, Erdil; Aydin, Gokhan; Goktepe, Mehmet; Cicek, Guner; Guder, Ferhat; Isik, Ozkan

Background: The importance of dynamic and static stretching exercises on motoric abilities before an athletic performance is well known. However, there is limited information about their effects on balance performance. For this reason, this study aimed to investigate the acute effects of static and dynamic stretching exercises on wrestlers’ balance performance and compare wrestlers’ balance levels according to their wrestling styles. Method: A total of 28 wrestlers who performed dynamic stretching (n = 14) and static stretching (n = 14) protocols voluntarily participated in the study. Data were collected using Togu Challenge Disc 2.0. An independent samples t-test was applied to compare the data that were determined to show normal distribution. Results: When comparing dynamic balance according to warm-up protocols, it was found that there was a significant difference in favor of wrestlers who performed dynamic stretching (p = 0.023). However, no statistically significant difference was found between static and dynamic stretching groups in terms of static balance (p = 0.238). Additionally, while a significant difference was observed in the wrestlers’ dynamic balance scores in both dynamic and static stretching exercises in favor of freestyle wrestlers (p = 0.008; p = 0.022), a significant difference was found in static balance scores in favor of Greco-Roman wrestlers (p = 0.014; p = 0.018). Conclusion: Dynamic stretching exercises were found to support wrestlers’ balance performance more than static stretching. The results showed that the different warm-up protocols applied before training and competition can have different effects on the wrestlers’ performance. Therefore, it is suggested that wrestlers should prefer warm-up protocols including dynamic stretching exercises to optimize pre-performance balance outcomes.
