Physical, chemical and thermal characterization of bacterial nanocellulose produced using sugar beet molasses by Komagataeibacter sp. SB2569

    Kara, Adem; Bayram, Sinan

Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) is a biopolymer synthesized by bacteria utilizing various carbon sources. The biocompatible and biodegradable nature of BNC offers considerable advantages for its application in fields such as medicine, biomedical engineering, cosmetics, food, nanocomposites, and organoelectronics. Nevertheless, the high production costs necessitate the development of more cost-effective and efficient BNC production methodologies. This study aimed to produce BNC utilizing cost-effective sugar beet molasses. To achieve this, bacteria isolated from various vinegar samples were assessed, revealing that the BNC production potential of these isolates ranged from 2.09 to 3.21 g L⁻1. The 16S rDNA gene of the strain with the highest BNC yield was amplified and sequenced, and it was subsequently deposited in the GenBank database as Komagataeibacter sp. SB2569, with the accession number PV231799.1. XRD analysis revealed characteristic diffraction peaks at 14.8°, 16.5°, 22.6°, and 34.5°, confirming the cellulose 1β crystalline structure and high crystallinity of the synthesized BNC. FTIR analysis exhibited characteristic absorption bandsthat, confirming the presence of β-1,4-glycosidic linkages and the cellulose I structure of BNC. TGA analysis showed an initial weight loss of ~ 5% between 0–100 °C, a major degradation of ~ 75% occurring at 220–350 °C with a maximum decomposition rate at 343 °C, and a residual mass of approximately 10–20% remaining above 600 °C. The findings indicate that the Komagataeibacter sp. SB2569 strain holds significant potential for BNC production using low-cost carbon sources.

Association of Plasma miRNA-7-5p and miRNA-214-5p With Rheumatoid Arthritis Associated Interstitial Lung Disease

Sahinoğlu, Irem; Karakas, Umit; Uslu, Sadettin; Kizilirmak, Deniz; Acar, Emre Ali; Tasgöz, Filiz Cemre; Kacar, Mevlüt; Sülükcü, Seref; Sengül, Merve Türkegün; Erdal, Mehmet Emin

Objective: Rheumatoid arthritis–associated interstitial lung disease (RA-ILD) is a major extra-articular complication contributing to increased morbidity and mortality. Circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as potential non-invasive biomarkers in autoimmune diseases. This study aimed to evaluate whether plasma miRNA-7-5p and miRNA-214-5p are associated with the presence of RA-ILD and with radiological and functional indicators of pulmonary involvement. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 58 RA patients (29 RA-ILD, 29 without ILD) and 30 matched healthy controls were included. RA-ILD was diagnosed by multidisciplinary assessment (HRCT and pulmonary function tests). Plasma miRNA levels were measured by qRT-PCR and analyzed using the 2^−ΔΔCT method. Diagnostic performance was evaluated by ROC analysis. Results: Plasma miRNA-7-5p and miRNA-214-5p levels were significantly higher in RA patients compared with healthy controls (p < 0.05 for both). Among RA patients, both miRNAs were significantly lower in those with ILD (p < 0.05). miRNA-7-5p demonstrated promising discriminatory performance for identifying RA-ILD (AUC = 0.87, 95% CI: 0.760–0.947; p < 0.001), whereas miRNA-214-5p showed modest accuracy (AUC = 0.676, 95% CI: 0.539–0.794; p = 0.01). In multivariable analysis, ILD presence was independently associated with decreased levels of both miRNAs. Neither miRNA correlated significantly with DAS28-CRP, disease duration, nor with radiological or functional severity parameters. Conclusion: Circulating miRNA-7-5p and miRNA-214-5p are associated with the presence of RA-ILD but do not reflect disease severity in this cohort. Larger prospective studies are required to validate their potential role as adjunctive biomarkers for RA-ILD detection and risk stratification.

Structural condition assessment of the Bamsı Beyrek observation terrace in Bayburt, Türkiye, on autonomous updated FEMs

Ergün, Mustafa; Tayfur, Bilal; Güneş, Erdi

This study involves detailed numerical and experimental investigations to assess the current structural condition of the Bamsı Beyrek steel observation terrace in Bayburt, Türkiye. The numerical dynamic characteristics of the structure were obtained by free vibration analysis conducted on the preliminary finite element model, while the experimental ones were determined through ambient vibration testing. The ultimate finite element models representing the actual state of the structure were developed through the model updating process based on the principle of minimizing the differences between numerical and experimental dynamic characteristics via the Teaching-Learning Based Optimization Algorithm. Load types and their characteristic values, potentially impacting the observation terrace during its service life, were identified according to national and international code standards. The internal forces obtained from the analysis conducted on the updated model under the influence of these loads were combined using various load combinations. The structure was then statically and dynamically checked based on the most critical responses calculated from these combinations. Structural responses are evaluated based on distributions in PMM ratios on the structure, PMM ratios of all elements according to the combination that causes the most adverse values, and maximum displacements. Consequently, considering all the findings obtained from the assessments conducted on the finite element model, which reflects the current state of the observation terrace under various loads, it has been concluded that the structure is statically and dynamically reliable and does not require any repair or strengthening procedures.

Profile of honey, bee pollen and bee bread: comparative shotgun sequencing

    Morgil, Hande; Ecem Bayram, Nesrin

The plant origin of the bee products often influences their value. Here, we investigated for the first time how the content of bee bread, a functional food with high nutritional value, differs in terms of plant and bacterial taxa in comparison with bee pollen and honey samples, using shotgun sequencing analysis. Sequencing of honey, bee pollen, and bee bread samples yielded approximately 32.74 Gbp of data. Out of a total of 268,964 abundant genes, 70,280 genes (26.13%) were assigned to a taxonomic group according to the supermajority rule. These taxonomic groups were annotated as follows: Kingdom (84.99%), phylum (75.94%), class (73.26%), order (67.21%), and family (65.11%). It was determined that honey, bee pollen, and bee bread samples consisted of large plant families Poaceae, Fabaceae and Asteraceae. This indicates that these taxa are also favored by bees for visiting, and are therefore used as food sources. These differences vary according to the environmental flora of the apiary and may be site specific. Based on these results, DNA-based next-generation sequencing techniques can be successfully used to identify the plant sources of bee products. Thus, the botanical and geographical origin of bee product samples can be more accurately, reliably and in detail identified. Furthermore, this technique can be successfully used to monitor the regional flora and food safety.

Surface modification and tribological performance of AISI 4140 steel via shot peening and plasma nitriding: A systematic evaluation of conventional, repeated and severe plastic deformation

    Erdoğan, Ömer; Kovacı, Halim

Despite its widespread industrial use, AISI 4140 steel exhibits limited resistance to wear and surface damage. This study investigates the effects of vibratory shot peening and plasma nitriding processes, applied individually and in combination, on the tribological performance of AISI 4140 steel. Shot peening was performed under conventional (CSP), re-shot peening (RSP) and severe shot peening (SSP) conditions, while plasma nitriding was carried out at temperatures of 460 °C and 535 °C. The severe plastic deformation created by shot peening increased dislocation density, significantly improving nitrogen diffusion during plasma nitriding. The SSP condition resulted in the highest surface hardness, increasing from 248 HV0.1 to 533 HV0.1, while the combined SSP and plasma nitriding treatment produced a maximum hardness of 920 HV0.1. In dry wear tests, the combined application of shot peening and plasma nitriding significantly reduced the wear rate, achieving a reduction of approximately 94% compared to the untreated sample. In saltwater environments, wear behaviour was controlled by the continuity of the nitride layer and the diffusion depth, resulting in an 82% reduction in wear rate for the SSP and plasma nitriding condition. Overall, it has been observed that applying vibratory shot peening prior to plasma nitriding significantly improves the tribological performance of AISI 4140 steel.

Relationship between food insecurity, intuitive eating, and body mass index among adults: a cross-sectional study in Türkiye

    Ünal, G.; Esgin, Özge

This study examined the relationship between food insecurity, intuitive eating, and body mass index among adults. This cross-sectional study was conducted through face-to-face interviews between January and March 2025 at a public university in Türkiye, involving 1166 students and personnel (65.7 % women; age range: 19–64 years). Participants answered the Food Insecurity Experience Scale and the Intuitive Eating Scale-2, which has four subdimensions: unconditional permission to eat, eating for physical rather than emotional reasons, reliance on hunger and satiety cues, and body-food choice congruence. Self-reported body weight and height were collected to calculate body mass index. Food insecurity was experienced by 42.7 % of participants. It was associated with lower total Intuitive Eating Scale-2, reliance on hunger and satiety cues, body-food choice congruence (controlled for sex, institutional role, and age), and eating for physical rather than emotional reasons (controlled for sex and institutional role) scores. Sex was not a moderator of the association between food insecurity and intuitive eating. There were no significant interactions between Intuitive Eating Scale-2 total and subdimensions and food security status for body mass index. Overall, our study provides empirical evidence that food insecurity is a significant factor that contributes to low levels of intuitive eating in a large sample of Turkish adults. Further studies should investigate the moderating effect of sex on the association between food insecurity and intuitive eating, while also emphasizing the role of food insecurity in the relationship between intuitive eating habits and body mass index in different populations.

Exergy and DFT-Based Thermodynamic Analysis of a Rankine–VCR Marine Waste Heat Recovery System

Keven, Arzu; Akçay, Enes; Gümüş, Hacer

This study investigates the performance of a diesel engine exhaust gas-driven Rankine Cycle-supported vapor compression refrigeration system using quantum chemical approaches beyond conventional thermodynamic analyses. The study focuses on R448A and its components, namely R32, R125, R134a, R1234yf, and R1234ze(E), evaluated at both the system level and the molecular level. At the system level, the Rankine–VCR system was analyzed using a Fortran-based macroscopic thermodynamic model, in which the thermophysical properties of the working fluids were obtained from the NIST Chemistry WebBook. At the molecular level, Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were performed to determine molecular structure parameters, including entropy, heat capacity, chemical hardness, and thermal enthalpy correction. The main objective is to investigate the possible relationships between these molecular descriptors and system-level performance indicators, while considering that mass flow rate is primarily governed by cycle thermodynamic properties. The results show that molecular stability and structural order are strongly associated with system performance. Among the R448A components, R32, with the highest chemical hardness (8.19 eV) and lowest molecular entropy (58.9 cal/mol K), exhibits the most favorable exergetic behavior and achieves the highest plant exergy efficiency of 44.92%. In contrast, R1234ze(E), chemically softer (η = 4.42 Ev) and higher in entropy, exhibits the lowest performance. Additionally, R32’s lower thermal enthalpy correction is associated with higher latent heat of vaporization under the selected operating conditions, reducing the required mass flow by approximately 60–70% compared to the other components. This study demonstrates that, in refrigerant selection, not only the global warming potential (GWP) but also quantum parameters such as chemical hardness, molecular entropy, heat capacity, and thermal enthalpy correction can serve as important complementary performance indicators when interpreted together with macroscopic thermodynamic and exergetic results.

Enhanced Absorption-Dominant EMI Shielding Performance of Pyramidal Cementitious Composites Incorporating Recycled Plastics and Magnetite Minerals for 5G Applications

Cakir, Mehmet; Engin, Mustafa Alptekin; Camuzcuoglu, Murat

In this study, waste polypropylene (PP) and magnetite (Fe3O4) mineral-reinforced cement-based pyramidal composite structures were designed, manufactured, and experimentally characterized to reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI) problems in the 3.3–4.9 GHz frequency band for 5G communication systems. Unlike traditional planar concrete surfaces, the aim was to minimize surface reflections and obtain an absorption-dominant shielding mechanism by providing gradient impedance matching through the pyramidal geometry. Although the use of carbon-based nanomaterials is common in the current literature, their high cost and corrosion risks limit their large-scale applications. This study involves the evaluation of waste polypropylene disposal and self-enriching magnetite mineral together. Theoretical analyses were supported by the Lichtenecker Logarithmic Mixing Rule and the Maxwell–Garnett model, and seven different mixing scenarios (S1–S7) were measured using the free-space method with a Libre vector network analyzer. Experimental results showed that the pure concrete sample exhibited predominantly reflective behaviour, with shielding performance improving significantly as the filler ratio increased. The S4 sample, containing 15% PP and 10% magnetite, offered broadband and balanced absorption performance, while the S7 sample, containing 25% PP and 25% magnetite, provided the highest shielding effectiveness with reflection below −10 dB across the entire band and transmission loss reaching −65 dB.

Barriers to physical activity in individuals with autism spectrum disorders after the 2023 Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes in Türkiye

Yarımkaya, Erkan; Şenlik, Zeynel Abidin; Demir, Mehmet; Töman, Ufuk; Kul, Murat; Türkmen, Mutlu

The individual, environmental and systemic physical activity (PA) barriers experienced by individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in daily life may become more complex after a devastating disaster such as an earthquake. In order to effectively combat the high level of inactivity that may occur after an earthquake in individuals with ASD, PA barriers must be determined before the earthquake. However, no description is provided in the literature regarding the PA barriers experienced by individuals with ASD after the earthquake. The purpose of this phenomenological study is to examine parents’ experiences regarding PA barriers experienced by individuals with ASD after the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes in Türkiye. Fifteen parents of individuals aged 8 and 31 with ASD were interviewed. The interviews were analyzed using both inductive and deductive content analysis approach. Three overarching themes were found: (1) the effects of PA on individuals with ASD, (2) post-earthquake PA barriers, and (3) the consequences of lack of PA in individuals with ASD. The results revealed that parents were aware of the benefits of PA and directed their children with ASD to PA before the earthquake. However, after the earthquake, parents encountered PA barriers that they had to overcome, and this negatively affected the children with ASD.

Boundedness in a parabolic-elliptic chemotaxis system with logistic source involving the exponents depending on the spatial variables and nonlinear signal productions

    Ayazoglu, Rabil; Simsek, Ramazan

This paper considers the global boundedness of solutions to the parabolic-elliptic chemotaxis system with a logistic source involving exponents that depend on spatial variables and nonlinear signal production: (Formula presented.) where (Formula presented.), μ, (Formula presented.), and (Formula presented.) is a measurable function, subject to the homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions in a bounded domain (Formula presented.) with smooth boundary. We prove that if either (Formula presented.), (Formula presented.) or (Formula presented.) with (Formula presented.) or (Formula presented.) with (Formula presented.), (Formula presented.) or (Formula presented.), then the above system possesses a unique global bounded classical solution.

The Effect of Inquiry-based Science Learning Supported By Augmented Reality On Scientific Process Skills and Academic Achievement in Preschool

    Arici, Faruk

Inquiry-based learning (IbL) is widely recognized as an effective pedagogical approach in early science education; however, young learners often struggle to engage with abstract concepts and sustain inquiry processes. Augmented reality (AR) has the potential to address these challenges by enhancing interaction, visualization, and engagement in learning environments. Although previous studies have demonstrated the positive effects of IbL and AR separately, empirical evidence examining the combined impact of AR-supported IbL on preschool students’ academic achievement and scientific process skills (SPS) remains limited, particularly in early childhood science education. This study aimed to investigate the effects of AR-supported IbL, IbL alone, and the current preschool science curriculum on children’s academic achievement and SPS. In addition, participants’ perspectives on learning experiences, skill development, and instructional activities were explored. A mixed-methods design was employed with three groups: AR-supported IbL, IbL-only, and a control group following the existing curriculum. Quantitative data were collected using achievement and SPS assessments, while qualitative data were collected through repeated teacher observations and in-depth interviews conducted throughout the intervention. Results indicated that AR-supported IbL led to significantly higher academic achievement and SPS than IbL alone or the current curriculum. While IbL was more effective than the curriculum-based approach, integrating AR further strengthened inquiry cycles and particularly enhanced measurement, communication, and prediction skills. Observational and interview data supported these findings by revealing increased curiosity, engagement, and active participation. The findings suggest that integrating AR within inquiry-based pedagogical frameworks can substantially improve the effectiveness of preschool science education. Implications are discussed for curriculum design, teacher professional development, and the development of developmentally appropriate AR-supported learning environments.

Writing autonomy in digital environments: Comparison of middle school students' writing autonomy perceptions in print and digital environments

Maden, Aslı; Maden, Sedat; Önal, Aydın

Writing autonomy is a key goal in writing education, as it supports the development of independent, motivated, and confident writers. It plays a crucial role in increasing students' engagement, fostering positive attitudes toward writing, and alleviating writing-related anxiety. In this context, examining how different writing environments -print and digital- affect writing autonomy can provide valuable insights for improving writing instruction. This study, designed using a relational survey model, investigated the relationship between writing environments and writing autonomy among 301 middle school students from grades 5 through 8. Data were collected using the Writing Autonomy Scale (Tekşan & Süğümlü, 2018) and a researcher-developed Personal Information Form. The study was designed according to the relational survey model, a quantitative research method. The following statistical analyses were employed in the data analysis: arithmetic mean, t-test, one-way analysis of variance, and Pearson correlation analysis. The results showed no significant difference in students' levels of writing autonomy between print and digital environments. In both settings, students demonstrated a moderate level of autonomy that was comparable. Additionally, writing habits were not found to significantly influence autonomy in either environment. However, a positive correlation was identified between students' writing autonomy in print and digital contexts, suggesting consistency in their autonomous writing behaviors across formats. Based on these findings, the study recommends the effective integration of both print and digital tools in writing education to further support the development of students' writing autonomy.

Life satisfaction and problematic online gaming among young adults: the mediating roles of depression, anxiety, and stress

Bekir, Seyhan; Yayla, İbrahim Erdoğan; Makas, Samet; Manci, Egemen; Yildirim, Murat

Objective: Problematic online gaming has emerged as a growing concern among young adults, often linked to reduced well-being and increased mental health problems. This study aimed to investigate whether depression, anxiety, and stress mediate the relationship between life satisfaction and problematic online gaming among young adults. Method: A total of 336 Turkish students participated in this cross-sectional study by completing self-reported measures of life satisfaction, depression, anxiety, stress, and problematic online gaming via an online survey. Results: Results indicate that lower life satisfaction related to higher levels of stress and depression, which in turn increase problematic online gaming behaviors. In contrast, anxiety did not have a significant mediating role, since its confidence interval included zero. Conclusions: In conclusion, both direct and indirect associations were found between lower life satisfaction and problematic online gaming, through stress and depression. Anxiety was not found to have a significant mediating effect in this relationship. These findings suggest that interventions aimed at enhancing life satisfaction and reducing psychological suffering could help to prevent such behavior.

Anatomical and Phytochemical Characterization of Ranunculus pinardii and Ranunculus constantinopolitanus: LC-MS/MS-Based Bioactive Compound Profiling

Feizollahi, Sepideh; Gercek, Yusuf Can; Canlı, Deniz; Basturk, Fatma Nur; Yesil, Yeter; Kösesakal, Taylan; Ecem Bayram, Nesrin

The aim of this study was to characterize Ranunculus pinardii and Ranunculus constantinopolitanus species anatomically and phytochemically. In order to contribute to the taxonomic characterization of R. pinardii and R. constantinopolitanus, anatomical structures of the stem, leaf, and petiole of species were examined with light microscopy. Total phenolic-flavonoid content, antioxidant activity, total anthocyanin, total proanthocyanidin, and individual phenolic compounds of extracts prepared with different solvents were determined. The results showed that the total phenolic contents of the species had a similar range (0.09-0.45 mg GAE/g for R. pinardii and 0.01-0.44 mg GAE/g for R. constantinopolitanus), but R. constantinopolitanus exhibited higher antioxidant activity (29.28 mg TE/g). Higher individual phenolic compound recovery was achieved from R. pinardii compared to R. constantinopolitanus with all solvents, except methanol. Both species were rich in luteolin, a natural flavonoid (163.98-34417.11 µg/kg for R. pinardii and 44.93-129009.44 µg/kg for R. constantinopolitanus). These results indicate that these plants contain bioactive ingredients that may have applications in different fields, such as medicine, cosmetics, and food. In particular, the detection of luteolin compound at high levels in these species compared to other components indicates that optimization studies aimed at the recovery of luteolin are important for future research.

Akeren, Zahide; Akeren, İhsan; Isik, Hafsa Kubra

Background: Self-regulation refers to individuals’ ability to control themselves, manage their behaviours and learn from their environment. Self-regulated learning skills may support nurses in providing effective care. This study aimed to develop and psychometrically evaluate the Self-Regulated Nursing Care Scale (SRNCS) for assessing nurses’ self-regulated nursing care skills based on Zimmerman’s Self-Regulated Learning Model (Z’SLM) and the relevant literature. Methods: The planning, implementation and evaluation components of nursing care were considered in relation to the forethought, performance and self-reflection phases of Z’SLM. Data were collected online between November 2022 and January 2023 from nurses working in state hospitals. Content validity was assessed through expert review. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were performed using data from 201 and 239 nurses, respectively. Criterion validity and reliability were also examined. Results: EFA yielded a 16-item, three-dimensional structure comprising planning, implementation, and evaluation and explaining 63.9% of the total variance. CFA supported this three-factor structure in an independent sample. Criterion validity was supported by correlations with the Counselling Skills in Nurses Scale. Cronbach’s alpha was 0.95 for the overall scale and 0.81, 0.87, and 0.93 for the planning, implementation, and evaluation dimensions, respectively. The test-retest reliability coefficient was 0.77. Conclusion: The findings support the validity and reliability of the Turkish form of the SRNCS for assessing self-regulated care skills among nurses providing inpatient care. The scale may be used in research and clinical settings to assess planning, implementation and evaluation dimensions of self-regulated nursing care. Future studies may examine relationships between SRNCS scores and care-related outcomes.

Associations between technology use, perceived burdensomeness, and independence among rural older adults

    Bal, Betül; Apaydin, Emine

Objective: This study aims to examine the relationships among perceived burdensomeness, technology use habits, and activities of daily living (ADL) in older adults residing in rural areas. Methods: This descriptive correlational study was conducted with 384 older adults living in rural areas in two different regions of Turkey. Data were collected using an Information Form, the Geriatric Perceived Burdensomeness Scale, the Barthel Index for Activities of Daily Living, and the Technology Use Habits Scale. Results: Perceived burdensomeness was moderately and negatively correlated with ADL (r = − 0.484, p < 0.001), whereas technology use habits were weakly but positively correlated with BADL (r = 0.192, p < 0.001). In the hierarchical regression analysis, technology use habits showed a positive and statistically significant association with ADL in the initial model (β = 0.189, p < 0.001). When perceived burdensomeness was added to the model, it emerged as a strong negative predictor of ADL (β = −0.497, p < 0.001), substantially increasing the explained variance. In the fully adjusted model, perceived burdensomeness, age, digital device use, and duration of digital device use were significantly associated with ADL, whereas age did not significantly affect the relationship between perceived burdensomeness and ADL. Overall, perceived burdensomeness and technology use habits were identified as key factors related to functional independence among rural older adults. Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that perceived burdensomeness and technology use habits are closely associated with independence in activities of daily living among older adults living in rural areas. These findings indicate an association between technology use and perceived burdensomeness and provide a foundation for future research in nursing practice and rural health services. Future research is recommended to focus on evaluating technology-based and psychosocial interventions that support independence and psychosocial well-being in rural older populations. Clinical trial number: Not applicable.

Background Aging-related changes and increased dependence on family members may negatively affect older adults’ psychological well-being. Perceived burdensomeness refers to the belief that one is a burden on others and has been associated with lower happiness, reduced mental well-being, and greater loneliness. Among adults living with their families, mental well-being and loneliness may explain how perceived burdensomeness relates to happiness in later life. Purpose This study examined the associations between perceived burdensomeness and happiness among older adults living with their families and evaluated the serial mediating roles of mental well-being and loneliness. Methods This cross-sectional study included individuals aged ≥65 years residing with family members in a city in Turkey’s Eastern Black Sea region. Data were collected from 273 older adults; after preliminary screening, 7 cases were excluded, resulting in a final analytic sample of N = 266. Measures included the Geriatric Feelings of Burdensomeness Scale, WHO-5, the Happiness Scale, and the Loneliness Scale for the Elderly. Serial mediation was tested using a regression-based approach with bootstrap confidence intervals. Results Perceived burdensomeness was associated with lower mental well-being and higher loneliness. The total association between burdensomeness and happiness was negative (β=-0.467), and more than two-thirds of this association operated indirectly through mental well-being and loneliness. Conclusion and Implications Perceived burdensomeness was associated with lower happiness among older adults living with their families, primarily through reduced mental well-being and increased loneliness. In geriatric nursing and primary care, routinely assessing these psychosocial factors and implementing family-centered and social support-oriented interventions may help improve happiness.

Background: Female athletes competing in weight-category sports may experience unique psychological pressures related to body image, performance expectations, and sociocultural gender norms. While elite sport participation is often assumed to enhance psychological functioning, evidence remains mixed. This study examined differences in psychological well-being, body image, self-esteem, and athletic identity between elite and amateur female taekwondo athletes in Türkiye, a cultural context characterised by distinct gender and body norms, and explored their associations with psychological well-being. Türkiye represents a theoretically relevant context in which institutional weight regulation intersects with sociocultural gender norms, creating a setting in which body-related psychological experiences may be uniquely shaped by both sport structures and cultural expectations. Methods: A cross-sectional design was employed with 233 female taekwondo athletes (107 elite, 126 amateur; M_age = 22.0 ± 3.2 years). Participants completed validated Turkish versions of the Warwick–Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale (WEMWBS), the Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), and the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS). Independent samples t-tests, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson correlations, and hierarchical multiple regression analyses were conducted. Results: No significant differences were found between elite and amateur athletes in psychological well-being or self-esteem. Elite athletes demonstrated significantly stronger athletic identity (p <.001), whereas amateur athletes reported significantly, though modestly, higher body image scores (p =.046). In regression analyses, self-esteem (β = 0.428, p <.001) and body image (β = 0.354, p <.001) were significant predictors of psychological well-being, jointly explaining 52.6% of the variance (R² = 0.526), with self-esteem showing the strongest independent association. Effect size estimates indicated that differences were large for athletic identity (d = 0.75), small for body image (d = 0.26), and negligible for psychological well-being and self-esteem (d = 0.09 and d = 0.13, respectively). Conclusions: Psychological well-being in female taekwondo athletes was more strongly associated with self-esteem and body image than with competitive level. These findings support prioritising self-esteem and body appreciation in structured psychological support programs for female athletes in weight-category sport systems.
