Investigation of CYP2E1 and Caspase-3 Gene Expressions in COVID-19 patients

    Karabulut Uzuncakmak, S.; Dirican, E.; Naldan, M.E.; Kesmez Can, F.; Halıcı, Z.

Background: COVID-19 pandemic spread around the world like an infectious disease that presents waved effects on patients. Some patients needed ICU and respiratory support. Some patients only had flu-like symptoms. Cytokine storm and elevated ROS were serious problems for treatment. Apoptotic genes and CYP Family are part of these mechanisms. Aim: In this study, our aim was to examine the gene expression CYP2E1 and Caspase-3 in patients with COVID-19 infection. Method: 60 COVID-19(+) patients (ICU and non-ICU patients) and 30 healthy volunteers were enrolled to study. To measure the level of gene expression qPCR was used. The 2-ΔΔCt method was utilized to analyze gene expression. Results: The expression of CYP2E1 and Caspase-3 genes showed a significant discrepancy between patients and healthy individuals. Caspase-3 expression increased (p=0,0041) but CYP2E1 expression decreased (p=0,0214) in COVID-19 patients compared to healthy individuals. Both levels of gene expression were lower in patients with affected lungs than patients with unaffected lungs (p<0,05). Laboratory findings including d-Dimer, LDH, platelet count, lymphocyte count were related to both gene expressions (p<0,05). We found no correlation between CYP2E1 and Caspase-3 expressions. Conclusion: The expression of Caspase-3 demonstrated apoptotic situations of patients but was not related to the CYP2E1 expression level. CYP2E1 gene expression is an important actor to metabolize endogens and xenobiotics however, COVID-19 patients demonstrated decreased CYP2E1 expression. CYP2E1 and Caspase-3 gene expression levels may be used as a diagnostic tool for COVID-19 patients.

Preliminary investigation of gene expression levels of PAPP-A, STC-2, and HIF-1α in SARS-Cov-2 infected patients

Karabulut Uzunçakmak, Sevgi; Naldan, Muhammet Emin; Dirican, Ebubekir; Kerget, Ferhan; Halıcı, Zekai

Background: Coronavirus-19 is still considered a pandemic that influences the world. Other molecular alterations should be clearer besides the increasing cytokine storm and pro-inflammatory molecules. Hypoxic conditions that induce HIF-1α lead to stimulate gene expression of STC-2 that targets PAPP-A expression. This study aimed to determine gene expression levels of PAPP-A, STC-2, and HIF-1α in COVID-19 infection. We also aimed to reveal the relationship of these genes with laboratory and clinical data of COVID-19 patients. Materials and Results: We extracted RNA from peripheral blood samples of COVID-19(+) and COVID-19(−) individuals. The real-time PCR method was used to measure mRNA expression of PAPP-A, STC-2, and HIF-1α. Gene expression analysis was evaluated by the 2−ΔΔCt method. PAPP-A, STC-2, and HIF-1α mRNA expressions of severe patients were higher than healthy individuals (p = 0.0451, p = 0.4466, p < 0.0001, respectively). Correlation analysis of gene expression patterns of severe patients demonstrated a positive correlation between PAPP-A and STC-2 (p < 0.0001, r = 0.8638). Conclusion: This is the first study that investigates the relation of PAPP-A, STC-2, and HIF-1α gene expression in patients with COVID-19 infection. Besides the routine laboratory findings, PAPP-A, STC-2, and HIF-1α mRNA expressions may be considered to patients’ prognosis as a sign of increased cytokines and pro-inflammatory molecules.

Ultrasonicate-assisted preparation of eumelanin-loaded nano/microparticles based on polylactide stereocomplex

Putri, Oceu Dwi; Petchsuk, Atitsa; Bayram, Sinan; Opaprakasit, Pakorn

The utilization of ultrasonication in the preparation of polymeric nano/microparticles has attracted vast attention due to its simplicity with low cost and high energy efficiency. The occurrence of acoustic cavitation generated by the ultrasonication process can enhance droplet disintegration, allowing the improved stability of emulsions. In this study, eumelanin-loaded nano/microparticles were prepared by employing polylactide stereocomplex (sc-PLA) formed by blending of poly(D-lactide-caprolactone-D-lactide), P(DLA-b-CL-b-DLA), triblock copolymer with linear poly(L-lactide), PLLA. The particles were prepared through an oil in water emulsion (O/W) technique followed by a solvent evaporation. The effect of ultrasonication on the encapsulation efficiency and physicochemical properties of the nano/microparticles was evaluated. The results showed that ultrasonication treatment could control nano/microparticles' shape, size, and size distribution, which enhanced the particle stability and the entrapment efficiency of eumelanin. Particle size distribution of ultrasound-assisted nano/microparticles was in a range of 0.38–135 μm, while those without ultrasonication had a broader distribution from 0.38–153 μm. Higher zeta potential was also observed in the ultrasound-assisted nano/microparticles, reflecting their higher suspension stability. The ultrasonication treatment led to higher eumelanin encapsulation efficiency (46.6%) with higher thermal stability and crystallinity, promoted by the formation of higher contents of the stereocomplex crystallites. The results confirm that ultrasonicate-assisted emulsification can be effectively used to fabricate the functional eumelanin-loaded nano/microparticles.

In this study, Antimicrobial, Antifungal and Antibiofilm activity tests on 16 bacteria and 2 fungi of Salvia marashica İlçim, Celep & Doğan and Salvia caespitosa Montbret & Aucher ex Benth species were performed by Agar Well Diffusion and Microdilution methods. Salvia species showed sensitivity with a zone diameter of 12–16 mm. Concentrations of 0.5 mg/ml to 16 mg/ml by the dilution method were used to determine the Minimum inhibited concentration (MIC) and Minimum bactericidal concentration (MBK). The MIC values of the plants are mostly 0.5 mg/ml - 4 mg/ml and MBC values are between 0.5 mg/ml - 8 mg/ml. Antifungal activity findings are remarkable on the species and it has been observed to have very high effects especially on Candida parapsilosis. When the antioxidant research findings are examined; It was observed that Salvia marashica and Salvia caespitosa plants have approximately 75% antioxidant activity at 1 mg/ml, and findings mostly directly proportional between concentrations and antioxidant activity capacity were recorded. MCF-7 and HUVEC cell lines were used to investigate anticancer activity properties. In line with the findings, while the IC50 value of Salvia marashica on the MCF-7 Cell line was 0.125 mg/ml, it was 1.65 mg/ml in the HUVEC cell line, while the IC50 value of Salvia caespitosa on the MCF-7 Cell line was 0.115 mg/ml in the HUVEC Cell line. It was found to be 9.87 mg/ml. It has been proven that both Salvia species have a cytotoxic effect on the MCF-7 Cell line.

Dirican, Ebubekir; Savrun, Şeyda Tuba; Aydın, İsmail Erkan; Gülbay, Gonca; Karaman, Ülkü

Coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) is a pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Mutations of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) are becoming increasingly common in various diseases. This study aims to investigate mutations in the cytochrome-b (CYB) and adenosine triphosphatase-6 (ATPase-6) genes of mtDNA in COVID-19 patients. The association between mtDNA mutations and clinical outcomes is investigated here. In the present study, mutations of the mtDNA genes CYB and ATPase-6 were investigated in COVID-19 (+) (n = 65) and COVID-19 (−) patients (n = 65). First, we isolated DNA from the blood samples. After the PCR analyses, the mutations were defined using Sanger DNA sequencing. The age, creatinine, ferritin, and CRP levels of the COVID 19 (+) patients were higher than those of the COVID-19 (−) patients (p = 0.0036, p = 0.0383, p = 0.0305, p < 0.0001, respectively). We also found 16 different mutations in the CYB gene and 14 different mutations in the ATPase-6 gene. The incidences of CYB gene mutations A15326G, T15454C, and C15452A were higher in COVID-19 (+) patients than COVID-19 (−) patients; p < 0.0001: OR (95% CI): 4.966 (2.215−10.89), p = 0.0226, and p = 0.0226, respectively. In contrast, the incidences of A8860G and G9055A ATPase-6 gene mutations were higher in COVID-19 (+) patients than COVID-19 (−) patients; p < 0.0001: OR (95%CI): 5.333 (2.359−12.16) and p = 0.0121 respectively. Yet, no significant relationship was found between mtDNA mutations and patients' age and biochemical parameters (p > 0.05). The results showed that the frequency of mtDNA mutations in COVID-19 patients is quite high and it is important to investigate the association of these mutations with other genetic mechanisms in larger patient populations.

Investigation of the recovery efficiency of CeUF method through RT-qPCR quantification of inactivated SARS-CoV-2 in untreated wastewater

Sait, Ahmet; Korkmaz, Serol; Parmaksiz, Ayse; Bayraktar, Bulent

Wastewater-based disease monitoring is an early warning system and a surveillance tool for infectious disease outbreaks regarding pathogens with pandemic potential. This study aimed at investigating the recovery efficiency of centrifugal ultrafiltration (CeUF), which is one of the most-used virus concentration methods, for inactive severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavi-rus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) added to wastewater. Inactivated SARS-CoV-2 was inoculated into untreated wastewater at different concentrations (4 × 103, 8 × 103, 16 × 103, 24 × 103 and 32 × 103 gene copy/ µL) and concentrated through ultrafiltration with a disposable centrifugal filter device. Total nucleic acids in concentrated filtrates were extracted and isolated by an automated system. In isolates, total RNA was measured by a UV/VIS spectrophotometer, and the recovered virus was quanti-fied by RT-qPCR with two gene regions (N1 and N2). The recovery rates were between 11% and 17.8% (mean 15.1%, CV below 15%). While there were positive correlations among the inoculated virus, total RNA and recovered virus, there was no correlation and linearity between the recovery rates. Despite limited recovery rates, CeUF integrated with RT-qPCR quantification can be a valid assay for monitoring SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater, and an early warning system.

The impact of ozone treatment on whey concentrate on the flow behaviour, functional and microbiological characteristics of whey powder

    Sert, Durmuş; Mercan, Emin

The impact of ozone treatment (OT) for 0 (control) 30, 60, 90 and 120 min to whey concentrate (WC) on powder flow, physicochemical, functional, and microbiological characteristics of whey powders (WPs) was examined. OT decreased the cohesiveness of WC, whereas the firmness, consistency and index of viscosity were not affected. OT caused higher L∗ and b∗ values in WP and improved the solubility and foaming capacity, but decreased foaming stability and bulk density. OT increased the mean particle size of WP samples depending on the treatment time. Higher treatment time of OT resulted in a lower cohesion index. OT decreased caking ability of WP samples and increased flow stability. Compaction coefficient and cohesion index depending on increasing test speed, were generally reduced with higher OT. Overall, powder flow analyses revealed that OT of WC resulted in improved flow behaviour of WP. The microbial load of WP was reduced using OT.

    SARS-CoV-2 Infection and Candidate Biomarkers

    Uzunçakmak, Sevgi Karabulut

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 is a virus that can still infect individuals and whose deadly effects continue despite the current vaccines and drugs. Since 2019, many studies on the pathogenesis of the disease have been completed and continue to be done. In addition to the diagnosis and treatment of the disease, many molecules that can be markers of the disease have been investigated. In the early stages of the pandemic, many nonspecific and infection-related laboratory findings and chest computed tomography were used to obtain information about the diagnosis of the disease. The more individual molecules became associated with the disease yet. The purpose of this review is to summarize the impact and role of many molecules associated with coronavirus disease-2019 infection that have been previously used and newly revealed. Numerous studies are summarized in this review. The obtained data show that previously used laboratory findings and new potential biomarkers are not specific to the disease. New potential biomark-ers have been associated with the severity of the disease itself, as can be seen with lung imaging and even with routine laboratory findings. One of the important points that are seen frequently in studies is that the effectiveness of these molecules has been shown not only in coronavirus disease-2019 infection but also in many other diseases. This removes the pathogenesis of the disease from being a unique mechanism created by the Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 and provides a general perspective formed by viral or bacterial infections. However, there are still many molecular changes that need to be investigated. Future studies will continue to update themselves with the mutations of the virus.

Evaluation of photon interaction parameters of Anti-HIV drugs

Akbaba, Uğur; Şakar, Erdem; Abu Al-Sayyed, Mohammed Ibrahim; Alim, Bünyamin; Özpolat, Özgür Fırat

Medical treatment inevitably exposes individuals to radiation, including those taking drugs used to treat and prevent human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Motivated by this, we investigated the radiation interaction properties of several HIV drugs to determine the interaction parameters, mass attenuation coefficient (MAC), atomic cross section (ACS), electronic cross section (ECS), effective atomic numbers (Zeff), and effective electron density (Neff). We calculated the values using the Phy-X/PSD software in the range of 0.015–15 MeV. Additionally, we calculated the exposure build-up factor (EBF), and energy absorption build-up factor (EABF) values of the drugs up to 40 mean free path (MFP) using the geometric progression (G-P) method. From our findings, we determined that Combivir, with its relatively high heavy element content, had the highest radiation attenuation capacity, whereas the probability of Lopinavir interacting with photons was the lowest compared with the other drugs. The results of the EBF and EABF parameters, including the scattering effects, ordered the drugs opposite to the primary interaction parameters such as MAC, ACS, ECS, and Zeff. These findings can guide the treatment process of HIV-positive patients and inform HIV prevention practices conducted alongside radiotherapy, as the interaction between radiation and a drug may cause deterioration in the drug's structure.

HRM method for identification of TP53 exon 5 and 8 mutations in human prostate cancer patients

Özmerdiven, Çağdaş Gökhun; Dirican, Ebubekir; Ayan, Semih; Tatar, Zeynep; Çakır, Sami; Güler, Yavuz; Karadağ, Abdullah; Soydaş, Tuğba; Uzunçakmak, Sevgi Karabulut; Aru, Melek

Background: The purpose of the present study was to perform a high-resolution melting (HRM) analysis to discover mutations in gene exons 5–8 of tumor protein p53 (TP53), as well as the relationships of these mutations to clinical parameters in prostate cancer (PC). Methods: Genomic DNA was extracted from 50 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues with PC. Mutations in exons 5 and 8 of TP53 were analyzed using the HRM method. Sanger sequencing was used to describe mutations. Results: According to the HRM analysis results, 21 (42%) PC samples had different normalized and shifted melting curves from other samples. Mutations in TP53 exons 5 and8 were observed in 12 (24%) patients by the Sanger method. The detection sensitivity of the HRM method in exon 5 and exon 8 mutations was 66.7% and 50%, respectively. PSA levels of PC patients with TP53 mutation were found to be lower than that of patients with no mutation (p = 0.8270). However, we did not find any correlations between TP53 mutations and clinical parameters (p > 0.05). Conclusions: HRM analysis is a simple, rapid, and efficient mutation-scanning method for known/unknown mutations in TP53 exons 5and8, as well as an attractive method for detection of mutations and their analysis in FFPE tissues. Additional studies with larger patient populations are warranted to confirm the correlation between the TP53 mutations and PC risk.

Extraction of low-dimensional features for single-channel common lung sound classification

Engin, M. Alptekin; Aras, Selim; Gangal, Ali

In this study, feature extraction methods used in the classification of single-channel lung sounds obtained by automatic identification of respiratory cycles were examined in detail in order to extract distinctive features at the lowest size. In this way, it will be possible to design a system for the detection of lung diseases, completely autonomously. In the study, automatic separation and classification of 400 respiratory cycles were performed from the single-channel common lung sounds obtained from 94 people. Leave one out cross validation (LOOCV) was used for the calibration and validation of the classification model. The Mel frequency cepstrum coefficients (MFCC), time domain features, frequency domain features, and linear predictive coding (LPC) were used for classification. The performance of the features was tested using linear discriminant analysis (LDA), k-nearest neighbors (k-NN), support vector machines (SVM), and naive Bayes (NB) classification algorithms. The success of combinations of features was explored and enhanced using the sequential forward selection (SFS). As a result, the best accuracy (90.14% in the training set and 90.63% in the test set) was acquired using the k-NN for the triple combination, which included the standard deviation of LPC and the standard deviation and the mean of MFCC. Aydın, Pelin; Karabulut Uzunçakmak, Sevgi; Tör, İbrahim Hakkı; Bilen, Arzu; Özden, Ayşe

Objective: In the present study, the relationship between a poor prognosis and adropin levels in diabetic patients with coronavirus disease 2019 was investigated by measuring serum adropin levels and levels of D-dimer, C-reactive protein, and ferritin, which are considered prognostic factors for coronavirus disease 2019. Materials and Methods: Hundred volunteer participants treated in the Erzurum Regional Training and Research Hospital were included in this study. Serum adropin levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The relationship between serum adropin level and C-reactive protein, ferritin, and D-dimer levels was analyzed by correlation analysis. Results: The participants’ serum adropin levels differed between the groups (P =.0007). The control group had the highest adropin levels among groups. The lowest adropin levels were in the COVID + diabetes mellitus group. Adropin levels of diabetes mellitus, COVID, and diabetes mellitus + COVID groups were significantly decreased when compared to the control (P <.05). There was a significant negative correlation between adropin and C-reactive protein, D-dimer, and ferritin. Conclusion: Adropin can be used as an auxiliary biomarker, a prognostic factor in the early management of coronavirus disease 2019 patients with diabetes mellitus. We think that our study will guide future studies conducted in this field.

Biocatalytic asymmetric synthesis of (S)-1-indanol using Lactobacillus paracasei BD71

Kalay, Erbay; Dertli, Enes; Şahin, Engin

Enantiopure benzo-fused cyclic alcohols have been used as a building block of a drug for Parkinson’s disease. Biocatalytic reduction of ketones is one of the most promising and significant routes to prepare optically active alcohols. In this study, the reductive capacity of seven lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains were investigated as whole-cell biocatalyst in the enantioselective reduction of 1-indanone (1). Lactobacillus paracasei BD71 was found to have the best reductive capacity. Effects of different parameters such as pH, incubation time, agitation speed and temperature, on enantiomeric excess (ee) and conversion were investigated in a bioconversion. (S)-1-indanol ((S)-2) could be used as precursor for the synthesis of rasagiline mesylate TVP1012 for the therapy of Parkinson’s illness. It was produced in gram-scale (5.24 g), high yield (93%) and enantiomerically pure form using L. paracasei BD71 whole-cell biocatalysts. Also, to our knowledge, this is the first report on production of (S)-2 using whole-cell catalyst in enantiopure form, excellent yield, conversion and gram scale. This is a cheap, clean and eco-friendly process for production of (S)-2 compared to chemical processes.

    Poverty and City Safety

    Alacadağli, Esmeray

Children are people’s gateway to the future; they are 30.3% of the world’s population. Childhood is a stage that has a great impact on adulthood and children being healthy individuals. For this reason, child poverty and childhood conditions are very important for individual and community life. Cities are places where people live, and more than 50% of the world’s population lives there. In the cities, whose numbers and sizes have increased over time, the crimes committed have also increased and diversified. For this reason, it has become increasingly difficult to provide urban security today. The aim of this study is to show the relationship between child poverty and urban safety, by carrying out an overview of the global perspective and examining the case of Turkey. Grey Zone: A Gap between Heavy and Severe Exercise Domain

Ozkaya, Ozgur; Balci, Gorkem Aybars; As, Hakan; Cabuk, Refik; Norouzi, Mahdi

The aim of this study was to determine a critical threshold (CT) interpreted as “the highest exercise intensity where V̇O2 can be stabilized before reaching 95% of V̇O2max (V̇O2peak)” and compare it with commonly used anaerobic threshold indices. Ten well-trained male cyclists volunteered for this study. Ventilatory threshold (VT) was determined from incremental tests. Multisession constant-load trials were performed to reveal V̇O2max. Mathematically modeled critical power (CP) was estimated through the best individual fit parameter method. Maximal lactate steady state (MLSS) was detected by 30-minute constant-load exercises. The individual CT load of each cyclist was tested by constant-load exercises to exhaustion with +15 W intervals until minimal power output to elicit V̇O2peak. The results showed that work rate corresponding to CT (329.5 6 41.5 W) was significantly greater than that of the MLSS (269.5 ± 38.5 W; p = 0.000), VT (279.6 ± 33 W; p = 0.000), and CP (306.3 ± 39.4 W; p = 0.000), and CP overestimated both VT and MLSS (p = 0.000). There was no significant V̇O2 difference between the 10th and 30th minute of MLSS and MLSS + 15 W exercise (0.36–0.13 ml·min-1·kg-1; p = 0.621). Exercising V̇O2 response of MLSS + 15 W could not exceed the level of 95% V̇O2max (57.02 ± 3.87 ml·min-1·kg-1 and 87.2 ± 3.1% of V̇O2max; p = 0.000), whereas V̇O2 responses greater than 95% of V̇O2max were always attained during exercises performed at CT + 15 W (64.52 ± 4.37 ml·min-1·kg-1 and 98.6 6 1% of V̇O2max; p > 0.05). In conclusion, this study indicates that there is a “grey zone” between heavy and severe exercise domain. This information may play a key role in enhancing athletic performance by improving the quality of training programs.

In this study, biological activities of silver nanoparticles (AgNP) synthesized by green synthesis method using the fruit extract of Gilaburu (Viburnum opulus L.) plant were investigated. The characterization of the synthesized AgNPs was performed by ultraviolet visible region spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Fourier transform - infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The crystal size was found to be 52.32 nm when the XRD data were calculated with the Debye-Scherrer's equation. The antimicrobial activities of extract and AgNPs were investigated by microdilution and disk diffusion methods. Antibiofilm activities were examined by the crystal violet technique. The cytotoxic effects of the extract and AgNPs against MCF-7 (human breast cancer) and HUVEC (human umbilical vein endothelial cells) cell lines were evaluated by MTT assay. The IC50 values for the HUVEC line were found to be 0.97 mg/mL (AgNP) and 85.24 mg/mL (extract), while the IC50 values for the MCF-7 line were determined as 0.022 µg/mL (AgNP) and 0.021 µg/mL (extract). To our knowledge, this is the first report to comprehensively examine the biological activities of V. opulus L. extract and biosynthetic AgNPs.

Eumelanin protects the liver against diethylnitrosamine-induced liver injury

Altındağ, Fikret; Boğokşayan, Seda; Bayram, Sinan

This study aims to evaluate in vivo protective effects of eumelanin (EU) on diethylnitrosamine (DEN)-induced liver injury. Wistar albino male rats were divided into 6 groups (n = 6), Control, DMSO, DEN, DEN + EU10, DEN + EU15, and DEN + EU20. Animals in the DEN group were injected i.p a single dose of 200 mg/kg DEN, DEN + EU10 group was given 10 mg/kg EU, DEN + EU15 group was given 15 mg/kg, DEN + EU20 group was given 20 mg/kg EU for a week. The results showed that there was no significant difference in vessel volume density between the groups. Inflammatory cell infiltration, hydropic degeneration, and necrotic cells were observed in the DEN group, and these histopathological changes were significantly reduced in all treatment groups. Although there was a low intensity of PAS-positive staining in the DEN groups, moderate staining was observed in the treatment groups. While Caspase-3, PCNA, TNF-α, and IL-6 expressions increased in the DEN group, their expressions decreased in the EU-treated groups. DEN increased AST, ALT, and MDA levels and decreased CAT levels. In particular, the EU10 dose significantly improved these parameters. The present study revealed that eumelanin has protective effects against DEN-induced liver injury.

The Importance of Nutrition and a Balanced Diet in the Elderly during the COVID-19 Pandemic

    Esgin, Özge; Erten, Tayyibe

Background: Age is an important risk factor for the mortality rate in the COVID-19 disease, and mostly, hospitalised patients over 60 years with chronic diseases are at high risk of death due to this disease. Along with preventive measures, proper nutrient intake might be helpful in maintaining a healthy state or reduce the severity of the COVID-19 disease in the elderly. Methods: The search was carried out in the PubMed, Scopus, Medline, Google Scholar and Web of Science using the following terms: COVID-19, coronavirus, elderly, elderly nutrition. Results: The requirement for some macro and micronutrients, especially the nutrients that support the immune activity, increases in this disease. During the pandemic, the daily energy requirement for the elderly is 27-30 kcal/kg, while the protein intake is at least 1g/kg, and the ratio of fat and carbohydrate is 30:70 or less than 50:50. The daily intake of vitamin A, B6, B12, C, D, zinc and selenium can also be increased due to their supporting function in the immune system. Probiotics include Bifidobacterium longum MM-2, Lactobacillus plantarum 06CC2, Lactobacillus bulgaricus OLL1073R-1 and Lactobacillus rhamnosus M21, and the consumption of prebiotics in diet enhances the immune function. Additionally, flavonoids, such as baicalin, epigallocatechin gallate, gallocatechin gallate, kaempferol, luteolin, resveratrol and quercetin, improve immunity by reducing oxidative stress in the elderly. Conclusion: Adequate and balanced nutrition diet should be applied during the pandemic; in addition to this, micronutrient deficiencies should also be overcome in the elderly at every stage of life. Nuron&The novel coronavirus, called SARS-CoV2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome CoronaVirus-2), emerged at the end of 2019 in China and was announced as a global pandemic by the World Health Organisation (WHO) on March 11th, 2020 [1]. It has spread more rapidly than previous coronavirus outbreaks, such as SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV (Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus); thus, it has affected most countries [2, 3]. By August 2021, WHO reported globally 206.958.371 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 4.357.179 deaths [4]. Since SARS-CoV-2 enters the cells through angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), it binds to the ACE2 membrane of alveolar epithelial cells and attacks firstly the respiratory system [5].
