Ozdemir, Mustafa
The agricultural sector holds strategic economic importance due to its roles in food production, employment, and providing raw materials to industry. Türkiye is a significant agricultural country with its biological diversity, favourable climate conditions, and agriculture-based sector. According to the labor force statistics of the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), as of 2023, approximately 4.7 million people are employed in the agricultural sector in Türkiye, with the majority being seasonal workers. The farm sector includes field farming, livestock, fisheries, and forestry. Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is vital for the sustainability of the agricultural sector. The Occupational Health and Safety Law No. 6331, which came into force in 2012, has mandated OHS provisions for all enterprises and employees in the agricultural sector. This study examines the statistics on work accidents, occupational diseases, and lost workdays in Türkiye's plant and animal production sector between 2018 and 2022 and evaluates the current state of OHS practices. Based on data from the Social Security Institution (SGK), the analysis reveals that 13,993 work accidents and 96 fatal work accidents occurred in the plant and animal production sector between 2018 and 2022, with the highest frequency of work accidents recorded in 2022. Additionally, 13 cases of occupational diseases were reported during the same period. An examination of temporary incapacity durations shows 133,008 days of incapacity reports, with the highest number occurring in 2021, influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. The study's findings indicate that OHS practices in the agricultural sector are inadequate and need improvement. In light of these findings, various policy recommendations have been developed, such as the widespread implementation of OHS training, increased health screenings, and stricter OHS inspections.

Çelikel Taşci, S.; Bayraktar, B.; Bülbül, A.S.; Sait, A.; Korkmaz, S.
Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of STZ (Streptozotocin) and Rambutan peel extract (RPE) on serum visfatin and cardiac response in experimental Type 2 diabetic rats. Methods: In this study, 64 adult male Wistar albino rats, aged between 8-10 weeks, were used. 8 groups were randomly selected, each containing 8 rats as Control (C), R100 (RPE 100 mg/kg group given with oral gavage route of administration (OGRA), R200 (RPE 200 mg/kg group given with OGRA), R300 (RPE 300 mg/kg group given with OGRA); Diabetes Control (DC): STZ 50 mg/kg i.p administered group, DR100 (D+100 mg/kg JPE), DR200 (D+200 mg/kg JPE), DR300 (D+300 mg/kg JPE). The study lasted a total of 31 days, including adaptation (7 days), induction of diabetes (3 days) and trial period (21 days). Blood samples were taken from the tail vein (vena caudalis) of all subjects on days 0 and 21 of the study. Visfatin and cTnI levels in the serum samples were measured and evaluated by ELISA method. Result: While the increase in mean serum visfatin and cTnI levels in diabetic groups was seen mostly in DC groups, the most significant decrease in mean serum visfatin level due to the addition of RPE was determined in DR100 groups (p<0.01). As a result, it was concluded that the administration of 100 mg/kg RPE in rats had no adverse effects. It was concluded that RPE, which has a cardioprotective effect by regulating the visfatin response that plays a role in the development of diabetes, may be useful in supporting the impaired cardiovascular system function that occurs in diabetes.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ1The impact of inactivity during the COVID-19 pandemic on the physical performance of high school athletes
Asan, Selim; Ulupınar, Süleyman; Özbay, Serhat; Namlı, Sevinç; Gençoğlu, Cebrail; Canyurt, Ferhat; Çingöz, Yunus Emre; Özkara, Abdullah Bora
Background/Objective: This study was conducted during the 2019–2020 academic year to evaluate the impact of participation in school sports on students’ Body Mass Index (BMI) and Assessing Levels of Physical Activity (ALPHA) test scores. Interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to a suspension of in-person education, the study resumed in September 2021, refocusing on the effects of pandemic-induced inactivity on the physical fitness levels of the same cohort. Methods: The study included twenty-nine male high school students (age: 17,24 ± 0,73 years), divided into thirteen athletes (participating in sports such as football, basketball, and track) and sixteen non-athletic counterparts. They underwent reassessment using the ALPHA test battery, evaluating cardiorespiratory, musculoskeletal, and motor skills fitness. Data were analyzed using independent and paired samples t-tests and a two-way repeated measures ANOVA to assess changes over time and between groups. Discriminant function analysis evaluated the ALPHA test’s ability to classify students based on their athletic status pre- and post-pandemic. Results: Initially, athlete students exhibited significantly better BMI, 20 m shuttle run, and 4 × 10 m speed run scores compared to their non-athlete peers. After the pandemic, only the 20 m shuttle run scores remained significantly higher for athletes, with diminished distinctions in other fitness areas. The classification accuracy of the ALPHA test battery decreased from 89.7 to 75.9% post-pandemic. Conclusion: The enforced sedentary lifestyle due to the COVID-19 pandemic adversely affected all students, particularly diminishing health-related fitness parameters such as body composition, cardiorespiratory and musculoskeletal strength, and motor skills. Students previously engaged in regular physical activity, notably school athletes, experienced significant fitness declines. This highlights the urgent need for targeted interventions to encourage active lifestyles among youth in the post-pandemic phase, aiming to avert long-term adverse health outcomes.

Lactic acid bacteria can synthesize exopolysaccharides (EPSs), and some of these EPSs have pharmaceutical or medicinal properties. However, the wound healing capacities of EPSs have rarely been reported. In this study, EPS extracted from Weissella cibaria MED17 was used to investigate wound healing capacity. MED17 EPS was previously characterized and antioxidant capacity was also demonstrated. The application dose of the compound was determined by the MTT assay. The comet assay was applied to reveal the free radical scavenging activity and protection capacity of MED 17 against DNA damage by inducing oxidative stress and DNA damage with Mitomycin-C (MMC) in the cells. The comet assay showed that 15 mg/ml MED 17 EPS could ameliorate DNA damage by 50%. Moreover, the scratch test investigated the wound-healing effect of MED 17 EPS on HT-29 colon cells. MED 17 EPS could stimulate the migration of HT-29 and ameliorate MMC-induced DNA damage. However, further studies need to be conducted to clarify the mechanisms of the wound-healing process of MED 17.

BACKGROUND: Antioxidants have been considered a rational curative strategy to prevent and cure liver diseases involving oxidative stress. An acute obstructive jaundice rat model was established to investigate the in vivo hepatoprotective efficacy of Rosa pimpinellifolia L. METHODS: The experimental jaundice model was performed by binding the main bile duct in 25 male Sprague-Dawley rats. All rats were randomly divided into five groups: first group: laparotomy-sham-only, second group: biliary tract binding (control), and third, fourth, and fifth groups: treatment groups with 250, 500, and 750 mg/kg fruit extracts daily, respectively. RESULTS: Considering dosage, although there was no significant therapeutic effect in the 250 mg/kg of Rosa pimpinellifolia L. group, the best results were found in the 500 mg/kg dose group, while results in the 750 mg/kg dose group showed consistent correlation with proinflammatory response. With regard to biochemical parameters, lipid hydroperoxide level in the rat serum and liver tissue was significantly decreased in all treatment groups. Amadori products, which are one of the early markers of glycol-oxidative stress, showed statistical significance in the treatment. CONCLUSION: It was revealed that the antioxidant effect of Rosa pimpinellifolia L. was more prominent in the early stages of hepatic injury secondary to oxidative stress.

Blood samples were taken from the jugular vein of the sheep before the morning feeding. MOTSc and BMCP1 levels were determined in blood serum samples by ELISA method. Result: In the study, serum MOTS-c and BMCP1 levels in sheep during lactation and pregnancy were determined to be lowest in the VKS<2 group and highest in the VKS ≥4 groups. Likewise, in age and gender groups, the highest level was detected in young lambs and yearlings in the VKS<2 group, while the highest level was detected in old sheep and rams in the VKS ≥4 group. As a result, it was determined that different age, gender, pregnancy and lactation periods affected serum MOTS-c and BMCP1 levels depending on the change in BCS (P<0.05). It was concluded that MOTS-c and BMCP1 may be useful parameters in the evaluation of mitochondrial function, energy metabolism and metabolic profile.

Purpose: Little is known about the relationship between apelin and serotonin in emotion regulation. This study aimed to examine children’s emotional regulation skills and salivary apelin and serotonin levels. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study performed in Türkiye. The research was completed with the participation of 146 children, 8–10 years old, from the general population. Emotion Regulation Skills Scale for Children (CERS) was used to assess children’s levels of emotion regulation skills. Apelin and serotonin levels were examined by ELISA technique in saliva samples obtained from children. Results: A statistically significant correlation was found between the mean total score of the CERS and the mean apelin and serotonin levels (p ˂.01). We found that females had higher emotion regulation skills compared to males, older higher than younger ones (p ˂.01). The regression analysis results show that age and gender together explain 50.5% of the variance in CERS scores, while apelin and serotonin together explain 35.8% of the variance. When all four variables (age, gender, apelin, and serotonin) are included in the model, they explain 51.3% of the variance in CERS scores. Conclusion: Older age and female gender explained most of emotion regulations skills.Key points It was determined that the average salivary apelin and serotonin levels increased with increased age, and with increased age ERS also increased. More research is needed as this is the first time that the relationship between emotion regulation skills and serotonin and apelin levels has been examined.
