Interleukin-27 as a novel player in alleviating hepatic steatosis: Mechanistic insights from an in vitro analysis

Cho, Wonjun; Oh, Heeseung; Abd El-Aty, A.M.; Özten, Ömer; Jeong, Ji Hoon; Jung, Tae Woo

Interleukin-27 (IL-27) is a recently discovered cytokine that has been implicated in inflammatory and metabolic conditions, such as atherosclerosis and insulin resistance. However, the mechanisms by which IL-27 attenuates hepatic lipid accumulation in hyperlipidemic conditions and counteracts endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, a known risk factor for impaired hepatic lipid metabolism, have not been elucidated. This in vitro study was designed to examine the effect of IL-27 on hepatic lipid metabolism. The study included the evaluation of lipogenesis-associated proteins and ER stress markers by Western blotting, the determination of hepatic lipid accumulation by Oil Red O staining, and the examination of autophagosome formation by MDC staining. The results showed that IL-27 treatment reduced lipogenic lipid deposition and the expression of ER stress markers in cultured hepatocytes exposed to palmitate. Moreover, treatment with IL-27 suppressed CD36 expression and enhanced fatty acid oxidation in palmitate-treated hepatocytes. The effects of IL-27 on hyperlipidemic hepatocytes were attenuated when adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) or 3-methyladenine (3 MA) were inhibited by small interfering RNA (siRNA). These results suggest that IL-27 attenuates hepatic ER stress and fatty acid uptake and stimulates fatty acid oxidation via AMPK/autophagy signaling, thereby alleviating hepatic steatosis. In conclusion, this study identified IL-27 as a promising therapeutic target for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

Review of In Situ Detection and Ex Situ Characterization of Porosity in Laser Powder Bed Fusion Metal Additive Manufacturing

    Aydogan, Beytullah; Chou, Kevin

Over the past decade, significant research has focused on detecting abnormalities in metal laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) additive manufacturing. Effective online monitoring systems are crucial for enhancing process stability, repeatability, and the quality of final components. Therefore, the development of in situ detection mechanisms has become essential for metal L-PBF systems, making efficient closed-loop control strategies to adjust process parameters in real time vital. This paper presents an overview of current in situ monitoring systems used in metal L-PBF, complemented by ex situ characterizations. It discusses in situ techniques employed in L-PBF and evaluates the applicability of commercial systems. The review covers optical, thermal, acoustic, and X-ray in situ methods, along with destructive and non-destructive ex situ methods like optical, Archimedes, and X-ray characterization techniques. Each technique is analyzed based on the sensor used for defect detection and the type or size of defects. Optical in situ monitoring primarily identifies large defects from powder bed abnormalities, while thermal methods detect defects as small as 100 µm and keyholes. Thermal in situ detection techniques are notable for their applicability to commercial devices and efficacy in detecting subsurface defects. Computed tomography scanning excels in locating porosity in 3D space with high accuracy. This study also explores the advantages of multi-sensor in situ techniques, such as combining optical and thermal sensors, and concludes by addressing current research needs and potential applications of multi-sensor systems.

Optimization, Characterization, and Carbon Footprint Analysis of Alkali Activated Waste Tuff and Fly Ash Mixtures for Deep Mixed Columns

    Kamiloğlu, Hakan Alper; Yilmaz, Fatih

Deep soil mixing (DSM) applications are one of the widely known soil stabilization techniques which can be applied to a wide range of soil types. Cement and lime are the major materials used as binders for DSM applications. However, as conventional binders lead to emit a large amount of CO2 during production, eco-friendly binders suitable for DSM applications have become prominent. Alkali-activated materials are good alternatives to conventional binders. This study was intended to investigate the usability of zeolite rich tuff wastes as an alkali-activated binder in DSM columns. Within this scope, the waste tuff and C-type fly ash mixture were used as an alkali-activated binder, and 10 M NaOH solution was used as an activator. Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed in experimental design to determine optimum components to obtain maximum unconfined compression strength and investigate the interaction between stabilization agents. From the RSM analysis the optimum ratios of activator (X1), waste tuff (X2), and precursor (X3) were determined as; X1 = 0.251, X2 = 0.548, and X3 = 0.538 for maximum UCS. UCS, mineralogical and microstructural characterization (XRF, XRD, SEM, EDX, FTIR) was performed for the DSM samples prepared considering the optimized components. It was determined that the UCS values of the 3, 7, and 28-day cured samples stabilized by considering the optimum values gave UCS values approximately 3 to 5 times higher than the lower limit values recommended by FHWA. As a result of mineralogical and microstructural investigation, the reason for the strength increase in the samples can be attributed to the formation of geopolymeric gel between the soil particles by tuff waste and fly ash activated with alkaline activator. Carbon footprint analyses were performed for 1m3 DSM columns produced with alkali-activated binders and ordinary Portland cement (OPC). From the analyses it was seen that the carbon footprint of the DSM column produced using alkali activated binders is lower than that of the DSM column obtained with OPC. After the general evaluation of the study, it is seen that the hypothesis that waste tuff can be used as environmentally safe alkali-activated binders instead of traditional binders is supported.

Social Dominance Orientation and Consumer Xenocentrism: Mediating Role of Status Consumption and Social Comparison

    Celik, Bilal; Ercis, Aysel

This research aims to create a model that elucidates the reasons why people exhibit xenocentric consumer tendencies. In this context, a theoretical framework describing the evolution of consumer xenocentrism (C-XEN) was constructed by integrating elements from diverse theories. Then developed model was analyzed with empirical research involving 534 participants using structural equation modeling (SEM) with AMOS. The findings indicate that individuals with high social dominance orientation are more prone to having C-XEN, and proposes that status consumption and social comparison mediates the relationship between the social dominance orientation and the emergence of C-XEN. The framework allows to grasp the psychological factors contributing to C-XEN. In conclusion, testable propositions that are verifiable are believed to promote additional researches on the matter going forward.

Metacognitive training for algebra teaching to high school students: An action research study

    Okumuş, Özlem; Öztürk, Mesut

Metacognition is an essential concept in mathematics education research. Studies indicate that high school students in Turkey must demonstrate expected success in learning mathematics in general and algebra in particular. To this end, the Ministry of National Education has initiated a mathematical mobilization in Turkey. Mathematics mobilization is a project that will adapt the learning of mathematics to daily life skills, making learning more accessible and ensuring that students love this course from an early age. In the initial interviews with teachers as part of this mobilization, teachers stated that high school students needed to exhibit sufficient metacognitive planning and monitoring strategies. Therefore, they required assistance in planning and monitoring their learning processes and motivating them to learn. The literature shows that metacognitive planning and monitoring are effective in teaching algebra. In this context, the research “How can metacognitive strategies be developed in high school students’ algebra learning?” seeks an answer to this problem. Based on preliminary teacher interviews, the researchers created action plans in collaboration with teachers. In the circular model, researchers tested these action plans and revised them. As a result of the cycle being repeated three times, researchers developed a teaching technique based on metacognitive planning and monitoring for high school students. The study's findings demonstrate that metacognitive training taught students metacognitive planning, monitoring, prediction, awareness, and motivation strategies.

Yilmaz, Mustafa Tahsin; İspirli, Humeyra; Taylan, Osman; Balubaid, Mohammad; Dertli, Enes

The present study focuses on synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by employment of a green and facile synthesis method. Aqueous extract of Helichrysum arenarium was used as a reducing and capping agent. The bioreduction of silver particles was monitored using UV–Vis spectroscopy based on increase in color intensity led by surface plasmon resonance. SEM, TEM, FTIR, DSC, and XRD analyses were followed for characterization, divulging that the nanoparticles were thermally resistant in the size of approximately 20 nm with a quasi-spherical shape without any agglomeration. AgNPs possessed a nanocrystal form with presence of crystalline Ag. EDAX analysis was used to verify that the nanoparticles were silver as revealed by a typical optical absorption peak of metallic silver nanocrystallites. The AgNPs were shown to have strong antibacterial and antifungal effects on some foodborne pathogens. The method developed in this study could offer a green, facile biomimetic, and cost-effective method.

Sensory analysis and consumer acceptance of legume-based gluten-free bakery products

    Erten, Edibe S.; Erten, Tayyibe

The replacement of gluten is essential for the development of gluten-free foods. To achieve this, variety of flours (such as corn flour, chestnut flour, and buckwheat flour) have been investigated by food scientists. Legume flours seem preferable to other flours among these gluten-alternative sources due to their nutritional quality. In this chapter, recent developments in legume-based gluten-free bakery products were investigated. Due to their high protein content, legumes have numerous applications in the gluten-free food industry. However, undesirable flavor formation limits their widespread usage. For this reason, the effects of replacing gluten-containing ingredients with legumes on the sensory properties and consumer acceptance were discussed as the main focus of this chapter.

Effect of Calcium Lignosulfonate Additive on Some Physical and Mechanical Properties of High-Density Fiberboard

Çamlibel, Osman; Ayata, Ümit; Peker, Hüseyin

Calcium lignosulfonate (CLS) (C20H24CaO10S2) is widely used in various industries today, including wood, construction, food, agriculture, and textiles. There are currently few studies on the addition of CLS chemicals to various fiberboards. This study was designed to explore the outcomes of the interaction between CLS and the boards, with the aim of expanding the potential applications of this chemical. We incorporated CLS at varying percentages (6%, 8%, and 10%) as an adhesive ad-ditive in high-density fiberboard (HDF) produced using urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin in a labor-atory setting. We assessed its impact on several physical properties - thickness swelling (TS), den-sity, and water absorption (WA) - and mechanical properties: modulus of rupture (MOR), internal bond strength (IB), modulus of elasticity (MOE), and surface soundness (SS). A control group was created using prepared boards, enabling the comparison of results between boards made with and without CLS additives. According to the results of a multivariate analysis of variance, the CLS per-centage showed no significant effect on density, MOE, and SS. However, it significantly influenced TS, WA, IB, and MOR, resulting in reductions of 4-12% for SS, 6-12% for MOR, and 2-22% for IB, while increasing TS by 20-130%, WA by 25-84%, and MOE by 1-3%. It was observed that the use of CLS led to differing results in the tests conducted on the produced HDF materials.

Analysis of an actively controlled composite box manipulator without external actuator

Lök, Şefika İ; Malgaca, Levent; Uyar, Mehmet

This study focuses on active vibration control for a single-link composite box manipulator by using a single actuator for driving and control actions. Model extraction and system identification techniques are studied to obtain mathematical models of the manipulator. The state space model is extracted from the finite element model using modal analysis conducted in ANSYS, while the system identification approach is an experimental modeling method using the input and output signals of the system. The input signals are defined as triangular and trapezoidal motion profiles, while the output signals are the acceleration signals of the manipulator. Proportional derivative and positive position feedback controllers are implemented on the obtained mathematical models to reduce residual vibrations. The simulation results are successfully verified by experiments, and uncontrolled/controlled results are evaluated with reduction rates.

A Study on Recognizing the Value of Chestnut (Castanea sativa) Blossom Waste

Sahin, Huseyin; Kolayli, Sevgi; Kara, Yakup; Can, Zehra; Guler, Halil Ibrahim; Ozkok, Asli; Serdar, Umit

Chestnut (Castanea sativa) blossoms are natural resources that are not put to economic use. They are completely mixed with soil as waste. Thus, this extensive study was designed and remarkable results were found showing the potential usefulness of chestnut blossoms. In addition to the phenolic capacity and antioxidant capacity of the aqueous and ethanolic extracts of dried chestnut flowers, the anti-urease activity of these extracts was studied to demonstrate their therapeutic value. The binding interaction of phenolic substances present in chestnut blossom with urease was shown using molecular docking research. The aqueous extract, with most effect, had total phenolic content of 46.67 ± 0.37 mg GAE/g and total flavonoid content of 6.14 ± 0.40 mg QUE/g. The antioxidant activity was determined by FRAP (648.47 ± 5.27 µmol FeSO4.7H2O/g for aqueous extract and 347.53 ± 2.09 µmol FeSO4.7H2O/g for ethanolic extract) and DPPH (0.05 ± 0.01 mg/mL for SC50 of aqueous extract and 0.11 ± 0.01 mg/mL for SC50 of ethanolic extract) assays, and rutin was found to be the dominant phenolic compound according to HPLC. IC50 values for urease in aqueous and ethanolic extracts were 2.55 ± 0.09 mg/mL and 4.57 ± 0.24 mg/mL, respectively. According to the docking experiments, which were important to support the hypothesis of anti-urease activity, myricetin and luteolin showed different and effective bonding degrees to the target protein when compared with the reference molecule acetohydroxamic acid. In summary, chestnut flowers are rich in phenolic compounds which are responsible for a wide range of biological activities including antioxidant features and urease inhibition. These blossoms could be evaluated as potentially important raw materials for food.

    Gürefe, Nejla; Güven Akdeniz, Dilşad

The authors examined the knowledge of middle level mathematics teachers instructing in inclusive classrooms to the hearing impairments students (HISs) or learning disabilities students (LDSs). The focus was on teachers’ understanding of students’ misconceptions related to the concept of angles. The study aimed to investigate the teachers’ role in identifying the underlying perceptions of misconceptions among HISs and LDSs as well as their ability to offer effective solutions. The mathematics teachers responsible for HISs and LDSs were the subjects of this cross-case study, with the unit of analysis being teachers’ knowledge of misconceptions concerning the concept of angles. Face-to-face interviews were employed to collect data, and subsequent analysis utilized a cross-case approach. The study findings revealed that both groups of teachers encountered numerous misconceptions for the first time. While teachers of HIS (HIST) identified the source of misconceptions as either teachers or students, teachers of LDS (LDST) more frequently attributed misconceptions to teachers and employed various representations to address and dispel these misconceptions. The authors recommended that teachers develop deep understanding of their students and identify potential misconceptions and that they explore diverse methods for taking precautions to prevent misconceptions.

Optimization of mechanochemical surface modification parameters on planetary mill using an I-optimal experimental design

    Özdemir, Akın; Uçurum, Metin

Several micro-particle-size additives and filler minerals are added to many industrial products, especially plastic, in order to reduce cost and improve mechanical properties and appearance. Also, grinding and surface modification are two fundamental properties of the filler minerals used in plastic products. Notably, Bayburt stone (BS) used as a natural raw material from Bayburt, Türkiye contains 76% SiO2 and 15% Al2O3. In this paper, the hydrophilic surface structure of micronized Bayburt stone (MBS) was made hydrophobe by mechanochemical surface modification using calcium stearate [Ca(C17H35COO)2] in a laboratory-type planetary mill. Next, the optimum conditions of the surface modification design factors, which are (1) ball filling ratio = 30.53%, (2) powder filling ratio = 10.43%, (3) mill speed = 475.91 rpm, (4) chemical dosage = 1.99% of powder, and (5) modification time = 4.83 min., were obtained using the proposed I-optimal design-focused optimization model when predicting the model parameters. In addition, a coated micronized Bayburt stone (CMBS) product with an active ratio (AR) of 99.90% and d10, d50, and d90 values of 1.32 μm, 3.48 μm and 9.55 μm were achieved. Finally, particle size distribution (PSD), thermo-gravimetric and differential thermal analyzer (TG-DTA), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), electron dispersive spectrum (EDS), and contact angle analyses were performed on the CMBS product.

Bibliometric Analysis of Sport Entrepreneurship Literature: The Case of Web of Science; [Spor Girişimciliği Literatürünün Bibliyometrik Analizi: Web of Science Örneği]

    Esmer, Yusuf; Dertli, Şükran

Sport entrepreneurship is the sport dimension of entrepreneurship and research on the concept has increased in recent years. The aim of this research is to provide a general perspective on sports entrepreneurship, to draw attention to the importance of the subject and to generate ideas for further research. For this purpose, bibliometric analysis technique was used in the research. In this context, 494 publications on sport entrepreneurship in the WoS database were examined under 7 headings (advanced search, cited references, co-author analysis, common word analysis, citation analysis, bibliometric matching analysis, co-citation analysis). These titles were analyzed in a total of 32 parameters and analyzed bibliometrically with Sankey diagram, VOSviewer, MapChart and Wordclouds programs. When the researches on sports entrepreneurship were examined, it was determined that the most publications were made in 2020 and the most citations were made in 2021, and the title, keyword, abstract, research area and WoS categories specified in the publications were related to each other. In this context, it has been seen that the basis of the structure in the relevant literature is sports, entrepreneurship, management, business and innovation. Although bibliometric studies have been conducted in the field of entrepreneurship in national literature, bibliometric analysis of sports entrepreneurship has not been carried out in a comprehensive manner, the number of studies in the international literature is low, and the use of more parameters and more data in this research than the studies conducted in the international literature reveals the importance and originality of the research.

Are Organic Foods Better for the Environment? Comparison of Environmental Costs of Organic and Conventional Foods

Alkaya, Fatime; Günay, Esra; Turna, Hilal

Biodiversity loss, soil and water pollution as well as global warming are among the most debated environmental issues worldwide. Conventional farming, which uses chemical pesticides and fertilizers, hormones and genetically modified products to obtain maximum yield per unit of land to feed the rapidly growing world population, is one of the main causes of these problems. As an alternative production system to conventional farming, organic farming has emerged to overcome environmental problems. The effectiveness of organic farming in addressing environmental issues has been debated for many years. In this chapter, the impact of organic foods on the environment is evaluated under the headings of biodiversity, soil and water quality, energy efficiency and climate change. The consensus drawn from studies is that organic farming is a more environmentally friendly production method compared to conventional farming. However, the heterogeneity of studies and environmental factors are influenced by many factors, making it difficult to reach a consensus.

Religious Attitude of the Great Mongol Khans (Chinggis, Ögödei Güyüg and Möngke Period); [Büyük Moğol Hanlarında Dinî Müsamaha (Cengiz, Ögedey, Göyük ve Möngke Dönemi)]

    Durmuşoğlu, Kurban

The Great Mongol Khans were leaders who played an essential role in establishing and expanding the Mongol Empire. These leaders tried to keep the religious elements within the empire together since its establishment. Of course, in addition to the Mongol Khans’ attitudes, the period’s political conditions also greatly affected this. The Mongol Khans also took shape according to the political atmosphere of the period from the establishment and shaped their religious practices within this framework. Religious life during the Mongol Khan period presented a very colourful appearance. This situation caused the religious situation during the Mongol period to be quite complex and to change in the historical process. Although shamanist beliefs were widespread in the early Mongol periods, as the Mongols expanded their borders, they also tolerated the religions in the lands they “conquered” and accepted some elements of these religions. Due to theMongols’vast geography and the fact that they included different cultures, many religions, such as Islam, Buddhism, and Christianity, became widespread, and the Mongol Khans generally did not interfere with these religions and sometimes even protected them. The Mongols have encouraged religious tolerance and respected different beliefs since their founder, Chinggis Khan. Chinggis Khan had people of different religions as advisors in his administration, allowing them to practice their religion freely. This led to tolerance of Islam, Buddhism, Christianity, and other beliefs during the reign of Chinggis Khan’s successors. This policy facilitated trade and interaction between different peoples within the Mongol Empire and played an active role in gaining the loyalty of various ethnic and religious groups under their rule. Thus, people of other religions could rise to important positions within the empire. However, this tolerance policy differed in every period and place, and some Mongol khans could be more oppressive. In addition, religious attitudes during the Mongol khan period varied depending on political and strategic goals. Therefore, since the religious attitudes of theMongol khans changed over time, it may not be easy to talk about a general religious attitude. In this study, the religious attitudes of the Mongolian Khans in the period from Chinggis Khan to Möngke are examined, and information is given about which religions the Mongolian Khans had and what kind of relationship they had.

Assessment of Different Methods for Estimation of Missing Rainfall Data

    Hırca, Tuğçe; Eryılmaz Türkkan, Gökçen

Missing data is a common problem encountered in various fields, including clinical research, environmental sciences and hydrology. In order to obtain reliable results from the analysis, the data inventory must be completed. This paper presents a methodology for addressing the missing data problem by examining the missing data structure and missing data techniques. Simulated datasets were created by considering the number of missing data, missing data pattern and missing data mechanism of real datasets containing missing values, which are often overlooked in hydrology. Considering the missing data pattern, the most commonly used methods for missing data analysis in hydrology and other fields were applied to the created simulated datasets. Simple imputation techniques and expectation maximization (EM) were implemented in SPSS software and machine learning techniques such as k-nearest neighbor (kNN), together with the hot-deck were implemented in the Python programming language. In the performance evaluation based on error metrics, it is concluded that the EM method is the most suitable completion method. Homogeneity analyses were performed in the Mathematica programming language to identify possible changes and inconsistencies in the completed rainfall dataset. Homogeneity analyses revealed that most of the completed rainfall datasets are homogeneous at class 1 level, consistent and reliable and do not show systematic changes in time.
