Effect of doping concentration on the structural and optical properties of nanostructured Cu-doped Mn3O4 films obtained by SILAR technique

Bayram, Ozkan; Guney, Harun; Ertargin, Mehmet Emrah; Igman, Erdal; Simsek, Onder

In this study, the effect of Cu doping on the optical, structural and wettability properties of the nanostructured Cu-doped Mn3O4 (CMO) thin films obtained by using successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction technique was systematically investigated. The optical, morphological, structural and wettability properties of the nanostructured CMO films were determined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–Vis spectroscopy, and water contact angle (WCA) measurements. There were significant differences in the crystal structure of the nanostructured CMO thin films. The Cu doping disrupted this structure of pure (undoped) Mn3O4 films and caused the formation of the porous structure. Optical properties such as extinction coefficient, refractive index, and dielectric constants and optical band gap, were determined for nanostructured CMO films. Compared with pure films, the band gap of Cu-doped films decreased from 2.06 to 1.71 eV with increasing Cu concentration. The dielectric constants of the films showed that the nanostructured CMO films have a transparent structure. At 300 nm wavelength, the dielectric constants of pure Mn3O4 films were 2.22 while the calculated dielectric constants at increasing doping concentrations were 3.55, 2.41 and 2.25. It was also found from the WCA measurements that the thin films were hydrophilic in character and the WCA values for the nanostructured CMO thin films were measured as 24, 29 and 40 of degree.

A perspective of a dual response surface model with a desirability function

    Ozdemir, Akin; Turkoz, Mehmet

The use of response surface analysis is an effective method to improve the quality of products and processes. Along the same line, a dual response surface-based robust parameter design model may reduce product or process variability by selecting levels of input variables. In many products and processes, the researchers and practitioners may need to deal with a desirable response. Therefore, this paper proposes a new dual response surface model-based robust parameter design model with a desirability function to obtain a set of optimal operating conditions for multiple responses while minimizing the product or process variation as possible as. The proposed methodology is efficient and it improves the quality of the products by decreasing the variability in the process. The comparative studies show that proposed method is effective and outperforms the existing procedures.

Isolation and identification of exopolysaccharide producer lactic acid bacteria from Turkish yogurt

    İspirli, Hümeyra; Dertli, Enes

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were isolated from traditional yogurt samples and genotypic characterization of these isolates revealed the presence of 21 distinct LAB strains belonging to Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus, Streptococcus thermophilus, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, and Lactobacillus plantarum as new LAB strains. Determination of the exopolysaccharide (EPS) production characteristics of the selected strains of each species revealed that all strains possessed at least one gene required for both homopolymeric- and heteropolymeric-type EPS production. Structural analysis of the EPSs showed that L. delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus Y39 and S. thermophilus Y102 produced heteropolymeric EPS containing glucose and galactose, whereas Leuc. mesenteroides Y35 and L. plantarum Y36 produced homopolymeric glucan-type EPS. The level of EPS production in these strains was found to be in a similar range. These strains with EPS production characteristics are good candidates for future studies as new LAB for yogurt production. Practical applications: Recent trends in yogurt production technology have led to an increased use of ropy starter cultures in yogurt production due to the technological roles of exopolysacharides (EPS) produced by these cultures. The main role of EPS in yogurt production is to improve the textural properties of yogurt as an in situ produced natural polymer. In addition to the yogurt starter cultures, use of adjunct cultures during production of yogurt is also of special interest to enhance the technological and nutritional characteristics of yogurt. Therefore, in this study, potential yogurt starter and adjunct cultures from traditional yogurt samples with EPS production characteristics were isolated. From these isolates, Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus Y39 and Streptococcus thermophilus Y102 produced heteropolymeric EPS containing glucose and galactose, whereas Leuconostoc mesenteroides Y35 and Lactobacillus plantarum Y36 produced homopolymeric glucan.

Effect of high-pressure homogenisation on viscosity, particle size and microbiological characteristics of skim and whole milk concentrates

Mercan, Emin; Sert, Durmuş; Akın, Nihat

Effect of high-pressure (HPH) homogenisation on milk concentrates were studied. Skim and whole milk concentrates were homogenised at 0–150 and 0–40 MPa, respectively, and viscosity, particle size measurement, microbiological and colour characteristics determined. Up to a pressure of 120 MPa, viscosity of HPH-treated skim milk concentrates (SMC) was proportional to HPH pressure and was lower than that of the control (0 MPa). With whole milk concentrates (WMC), HPH decreased viscosity up to a pressure of 20 MPa; above 30 MPa viscosity increased. According to a power law model, both skim and whole milk concentrates showed shear-thinning flow behaviour. HPH at pressures above 120 MPa completely inactivated the microbial load of SMC. Up to a pressure of 50 MPa, HPH decreased the mean particle size (D [3,2]) of SMC; an increasing trend of D [3,2] was observed above 70 MPa. Except at 40 MPa, HPH decreased D [3,2] values of WMC samples.

Learning outcome literacy: The case of five elementary mathematics teachers

    Akdeniz, Dilsad Güven; Argün, Ziya

Learning outcome (LO) literacy is conceptualized as a necessary skill for planning teaching and learning activities effectively. The skill has two main components: understanding and interpreting learning outcomes. The current study aimed to identify learning outcome literacy of elementary mathematics teachers with regard to this conceptualization. It is a case study based on the qualitative design. Participants were 5 mathematics teachers working at different elementary (5th - 8th grade) schools in Turkey. Observations and semi-structured interviews were used for data collection based on 10 learning outcomes selected from algebra and number learning domains in local mathematics curriculum. Content analysis method was used for data analysis. According to the findings, LO literacy can be regarded as a basic teacher competence and it requires the teacher to use the knowledge and skills he/she has. The results showed that participant teachers' LO literacy was insufficient. Considering the interrelation among its components, LO literacy should be developed with all the sub-components for effective teaching of LOs.

Bahadır, Zekeriyya; Yazar, Murat; Tümay, Süreyya Oğuz; Serencam, Hüseyin; Bektaş, Hakan; Duran, Celal

2-[(6-Morpholin-4-ylpyridin-3-yl)amino]-N’-(4-oxo-3-phenyl-1,3thiazolidin-2-ylidene) acetohydrazide (MPAPTAH) was first used in a cloud point extraction procedure to determine the cadmium and lead ions in solid samples. Triton X-114 was used as a mixed micellar medium. The optimal extraction parameters (e.g. surfactant concentrations, amount of ligand, pH etc.) were evaluated. The optimum experimental conditions for Cd and Pb ions during the extraction procedure were carried out with 0.7 mg of MPAPTAH agent, 1.0 mL 0.2% (w/v) of the surfactant, a pH of 8.0. Under the best analytical parameters, the detection limit (LOD) for Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions were found to be 0.6 μg L−1 and 1.91 μg L−1, while the relative standard deviation (RSD) was taken as 2.78 and 2.86%, respectively. Preconcentration factor (PE) of 50 was obtained from using 50 mL of the sample volume for both ions. The accuracy of the method was tested through analysis of Pb2+ and Cd2+ in certified reference material (CRM Sandy Soil C). The interference effect of certain cations and anions were also investigated. The recoveries of the analyte ions were almost quantitative in the presence of all the interfering ions. Afterwards, the developed method was successfully applied to find lead and cadmium in real solid samples, including black tea, tobacco, and chili pepper.

Investigation of high-temperature-resistant rhenium–boron neutron shields by experimental studies and Monte Carlo simulations

Korkut, Turgay; Korkut, Hatun; Aygün, Bünyamin; Bayram, Özkan; Karabulut, Abdulhalik

In this study, novel rhenium–boron neutron-shielding high-temperature-resistant materials were designed. The considered samples, Re60–B40, Re58–B42, Re50–B50, and Re40–B60, with different concentrations of rhenium and boron were investigated to elucidate their neutron-shielding performances, and compare them with well-known neutron-shielding materials such as the 316LN quality nuclear steel. In addition to the experimental studies, Monte Carlo simulations were performed using the FLUKA and GEANT4 codes, where 4.5-MeV neutrons emitted by a 241Am–Be source were employed. Experimental equivalent dose rates, simulated track lengths, energy balances, and neutron mass absorption cross sections were discussed in detail.

Levitation and guidance force relaxations of the single−seeded and multi−seeded YBCO superconductors

    Abdioglu, M.; Ozturk, K.; Kabaer, M.; Ekici, M.

The stable levitation and guidance forces at higher force levels are important parameters for technological applicability of high temperature superconductors (HTSs) in Maglev and Flywheel energy storage systems. In this study, we have investigated the levitation and guidance force relaxation of both the single-seeded and multi-seeded YBCOs for different (HTS)−permanent magnetic guideway (PMG) arrangements in different cooling heights (CH). The measured saturated force values of Halbach PMG arrangements are bigger than the maximum force values of other PMGs. It is determined that the normalized magnetic levitation force (MLF) and normalized guidance force (GF) relaxation rate values decrease while the relaxation rates increase with increasing magnetic pole number and the effective external magnetic field area for both the single−seeded and multi−seeded YBCO. Also it can be said that the force stability at the higher force value of Halbach PMG arrangement indicates that the relaxation quality of Halbach PMG is better than that of the others. Additionally, it can be said that both the MLF and GF relaxation qualities of the multi−seeded YBCOs are better than that of the single−seeded ones. This magnetic force and relaxation results of the single−seeded and multi−seeded YBCOs are useful to optimize the loading capacity and lateral reliability of HTS Maglev and similar magnetic bearing systems.

Effect of the number of cycles on the optical and structural properties of Mn3O4 nanostructures obtained by SILAR technique

Bayram, Ozkan; Simsek, Onder; Guney, Harun; Igman, Erdal; Murat Ozer, Mustafa

In this study, nanostructured Mn3O4 (manganese oxide) thin films were successfully obtained by successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method on the soda lime glass substrates using Manganese Nitrate (Mn(NO3)2) and Ammonium hydroxide (NH4(OH)) as cationic and anionic precursors respectively. Structural and morphological characterizations of the Mn3O4 films obtained at different cycles were determined using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The crystal structure of the thin films were also confirmed by RAMAN spectroscopy. Optical properties such as absorption, transmission, reflection, extinction coefficient and optical band gap of nanostructured Mn3O4 thin films were determined by UV–Vis spectroscopy. SEM images showed that the manganese oxide nanosheets formed uniformly on substrate surface. As the deposition cycles increased, nano-sheets structure deteriorated. The optical band gap of Mn3O4 thin films varied from 2.12 to 2.59 eV, depending on the increase in number of cycles. From contact angle measurements of thin films, it was determined that thin films had hydrophilic character.

Thermoeconomic analysis and optimization of a Re-compression supercritical CO2 cycle using waste heat of Gaziantep Municipal Solid Waste Power Plant

Tozlu, Alperen; Abuşoğlu, Ayşegül; Özahi, Emrah

This paper presents thermodynamic and thermoeconomic analyses as well as optimization of a re-compression supercritical CO2 cycle. A gas turbine cycle (GT) is adapted as a model to an existing plant to generate additional power in Gaziantep Municipal Solid Waste Power Plant (GMSWPP). The total capital cost rate and total cost rate of the GT cycle are found to be 20.47 $/h and 77.14 $/h, respectively utilizing SPECO by using the exhaust gas of 16 kg/s with 1.9 bar and 566.7 °c. The net power, the energy and exergy efficiencies, the total cost and the total capital cost rates of the GT cycle are optimized by +1.73%, +3.21%, +2.45%, −1.11% and −1.64%, respectively using NSGA-II in MATLAB in the range of 2.5≤PR≤4, 200≤P6≤216, 16≤T0≤23 and 9.1≤LMTD≤12.9. This paper provides an originality such that optimization as well as thermodynamic and thermoeconomic analyses is performed simultaneously for an existing MSW power plant, which can be stressed that there are scarce amounts of studies related on this field. Moreover, as another novelty, it can be emphasized that net power output of such like plants which have similar capacity can be improved using the developed model and NSGA-II optimization method.

Determination of powder flow properties of skim milk powder produced from high-pressure homogenization treated milk concentrates during storage

Mercan, Emin; Sert, Durmuş; Akın, Nihat

The aim of this study was to determine effects of high-pressure homogenization (HPH) treatment to milk concentrates on powder flow properties of skim milk powders (SMP). For this purpose, SMP samples were produced from skim milk concentrates which were HPH treated at 0 (control), 50, 100 and 150 MPa. SMP samples were stored 180 days at 20 and 40 °C and caking, cohesion and powder flow speed dependency test (PFSD) were performed using a Powder Flow Analyzer. HPH treatment decreased cohesion and caking properties of SMPs. At the 0. day, cake strength of SMPs from HPH treated concentrates varied from 0.43-2.70 mN.m, whereas cake strength of SMP-0 (control) was 8.20 mN.m. Cohesion index (CI) of samples ranged from 6.80-15.74 mm during storage. Based on CI, SMPs from HPH treated concentrates showed free and easy flowing flow behavior during storage at 20 and 40 °C. In addition, cohesion index at four speeds indicated that SMP from HPH treated concentrates were more flowable at even lower flow speeds then SMP-0. PFSD test verified that all SMP samples showed more free-flowing characteristics with increasing flow speeds. Flow stability of samples ranged from 0.95-1.15 and also flow stability of SMP-0 increased during storage at both 20 and 40 °C. The results revealed that HPH treatment to milk concentrates could improve powder flow properties of skim milk powders.

Primary school teachers' practices and troubles with the students who they think have undiagnosed difficulties in verbal communication, reading and writing

    Ergen, Yusuf; Elma, Cevat

The primary school Turkish program was basically built on three learning domains. These are the learning domains of verbal communication, reading and writing. The purpose of the present study is to determine primary school teachers’ practices and difficulties related to students considered to have undiognosed verbal communication, reading and writing difficulties. The study used the phenomenological research design, one of the qualitative research designs. The sample of the study was composed of a total of 21 primary school teachers servicing in the province of Bayburt during the 2016-2017 educational year. The sample of the study was determined by using the maximum variation sampling method, one of the purposeful sampling methods. The study data was collected through using the semi-structured interview form. In the analysis of the data, the content analysis method was used. Based on the study results, it was concluded that the primary school teachers more frequently carried out the practices of 'speaking in front the class about daily events' for the students having speaking difficulties, 'using the smart board' for the students with listening difficulties, 'one-to-one reading with the teacher' for the students with reading difficulties and 'one-to-one dictation work' for the students with writing difficulties; they more frequently had problems related to the 'timid behaviors' of the students with speaking difficulties, 'losing attention' of the students with listening difficulties and the 'poor time management skills' of the students with reading and writing difficulties; they also expected help from families in all the learning domains.

The interactions of cephalosporins on polyol pathway enzymes from sheep kidney

    Şengül, Bülent; Beydemir, Şükrü

Context: Cephalosporins are derived from the fungus Acremonium. Due to their strong bactericidal ability, these drugs have to a wide usage in medicine. Objective: An investigation of the effects on sheep renal aldose reductase (AR) and sorbitol dehydrogenase (SDH) of cefoperazone, cefazolin, cefuroxime, ceftazidime and ceftriaxone as cephalosporin drugs was carried out in the present study. Methods: AR and SDH were purified from sheep kidney by ion exchange, gel filtration and affinity methods with approximately 219- and 484-fold, respectively. Some kinetic properties of the enzymes were determined such as optimal pH, optimal ionic strength, optimal temperature, stable pH, Km and Vmax. IC50 values of the drugs were found for each enzyme. Results: While the AR was inhibited by all drugs, SDH enzyme was inhibited by only CXM (IC50 8.10 mM). Interestingly, CZO activated SDH enzyme. This result was evaluated as important for the flow of the polyol reactions. Ki values and inhibition types were determined for AR. However, these values could not have determined for SDH, due to insufficient inhibition. Conclusions: From these results, it was concluded that cephalosporins may have an important effect on flow of the polyol metabolism.

Room temperature superplasticity in fine/ultrafine-grained Zn-Al alloys with different phase compositions

Demirtas, Muhammet; Yanar, Harun; Saray, Onur; Purcek, Gencaga; Kaibyshev, R.; Tikhonova, M.; Itoh, G.; Taleff, E.M.; Sato, E.

Three Zn-Al alloys, namely Zn-22Al, Zn-5Al and Zn-0.3Al, were subjected to equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP), and the effect of ECAP on their microstructure and room temperature (RT) superplastic behavior were investigated in detail referring to previous studies reported by the authors of the current study. ECAP remarkably refined the microstructures of three alloys as compared to their pre-processed conditions. While the lowest grain size was achieved in Zn-22Al alloy as 200 nm, the grain sizes of Zn-5Al and Zn-0.3Al alloys were ~540 nm and 2 µm, respectively, after ECAP. After the formation of fine/ultrafine-grained (F/UFG) microstructures, all Zn-Al alloys exhibited superplastic behavior at RT and high strain rates. The maximum superplastic elongations were 400%, 520% and 1000% for Zn-22Al, Zn-5Al and Zn-0.3Al alloys, respectively. It is interesting to point out that the highest RT superplastic elongation was obtained in Zn-0.3Al alloy with the largest grain size, while Zn-22Al alloy having the lowest grain size showed the minimum superplastic elongation. This paradox was attributed to the different phase compositions of these alloys. The formation of Al-rich α/α phase boundaries, where grain boundary sliding is minimum comparing to Zn-rich η/η and η/α phase boundaries of Zn-Al alloys, is the lowest level in Zn-0.3Al alloy among all the alloys. Therefore, it can be concluded that if it is desired to achieve high superplastic elongation in Zn-Al alloys at RT, keeping Al content at a possibly minimum level seems to be the most suitable way.

Chemical characterization of 64 propolis samples from hakkari, Turkey

Bayram, Nesrin Ecem; Sorkun, Kadriye; Öz, Gül Cevahir; Salih, Bekir; Topçu, Gülaçtı

Propolis is a resinous substance produced by honey bees from various plants they visit. Sixty-four propolis samples were collected from different localities of four districts (Merkez, Yüksekova, Şemdinli, and Çukurca) in Hakkari territory. Ethanol extracts of the propolis samples were prepared, and their chemical contents were determined by gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy (GC–MS). Flavonoids were generally found in a high concentration in Şemdinli samples of Turkey. Twenty-seven coumarins were identified in the 28 propolis samples among studied 64 ones. Except suberosin, the coumarins were never reported before in any propolis sample with Turkish origin. The propolis samples belonging to Yüksekova were found to be richer in coumarins than the others, and the most richest one among the Yüksekova apiaries, was found to be Akocak sample (Y2) with 41.99% total yield, followed by Akçalı sample (Y5) (30.86%). This is a first comprehensive and original report about the chemical profile of propolis samples from Hakkari. The propolis samples from Hakkari exhibited a chemical content rich in flavonoids including coumarins and furocoumarins.

A novel strategy for probiotic bacteria: Ensuring microbial stability of fish fillets using characterized probiotic bacteria-loaded nanofibers

Ceylan, Zafer; Meral, Raciye; Karakaş, Canan Yağmur; Dertli, Enes; Yilmaz, Mustafa Tahsin

Nanoencapsulation of probiotic bacteria (L. rhamnosus) into poly(vinyl alcohol) & sodium alginate-based nanofibers (VSPBe) and also the production of poly(vinyl alcohol) & sodium alginate-based nanofibers (VS) were successfully obtained. VSPBe and VS nanofibers were used to limit the Total Mesophilic Aerobic Bacteria (TMABc), Psychrophilic Bacteria (TPBc) and also Yeast and Mold count (TYMc) growth in the fish fillet. Dispersion stability (ζ potential −6.29 mV and −7.74 mV, for VS and VSPBe, respectively), thermal decomposition (a reduction in mass of VS and VSPBe at temperatures 50 °C, corresponding to <5% and >5%, respectively) and morphological properties of nanofibers (diameters between 60 nm and 580 nm) were revealed by characterization analysis. Microbiological tests demonstrated that VS and VSPBe were effectively delayed the TMABc and TPBc growth in fish fillets up to 38%. However, the antimicrobial effects of nanofibers were not pronounced for TYM growth in the fish fillet. The viability of probiotic bacteria could be provided after electrospinning process and the use of L. rhamnosus-loaded nanofibers for delaying microbial growth in the fish fillets could be evaluated as a natural/novel technique.

A study on the optical, chemical and dielectric properties of PPCIN thin films derived from essential oil compounds using RF plasma polymerisation technique

    Bayram, Ozkan; Simsek, Onder

Polymer-based nanostructured films were produced on various substrates using Radio Frequency (RF) plasma polymerization technique from Cinnamaldehyde monomer which is an organic compound. To fabricate polymer thin film, the pressure, the deposition time and RF power were set to 480 mTorr, 30 min and 15, 20 and 30 W, respectively. The effect of RF power on the optical, morphological and chemical properties of thin films were investigated. The optical, morphological and chemical properties were determined by UV–Vis spectroscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and FTIR spectroscopy, respectively. The average surface roughness of thin films was detected as 5.7 nm, 3.9 nm and 11.7 nm using AFM depending on the increase in RF power. Using FTIR spectroscopy, the chemical structure of the polymer thin films was compared with that of the monomer material, and it was found that the majority of the functional groups belonging to the monomers also appeared in the thin films. Optical band gap of thin films increased with RF power and these values were determined as 2.83 eV, 3.05 eV and 2.98 eV, respectively. The extinction coefficients and refractive indices of the thin films were measured at 500 nm between 0.00183–0.00522 and 2.40–2.78, respectively.

Determination of the optical and chemical properties of aniline doped plasma polymerized cineole thin films synthesized at various RF powers

    Bayram, Ozkan

Aniline-doped plasma polymerized cineole (PPCin) thin films were produced on glass substrates by plasma polymerization technique under varying Radio Frequency (RF) power levels. PPCin thin films were produced at 30 min deposition time and at 50, 75 and 100 W RF energies. Surface morphologies of pure and aniline-doped PPCin thin films obtained on glass substrates were investigated by AFM. It was found that the average surface roughness of pure PPCin thin films increased from 0.19 to 30.6 nm due to the dopant effect and RF energies. The optical band gap for pure polymer thin film was 3.65 eV, but with the effect of doping, these value was found to be 3.54, 3.29 and 3.93, respectively, with increasing RF energy. The extinction coefficient and refractive indices of PPCin thin films were calculated as between 0.065 and 0.92 and between 1.24 and 1.57 respectively, at the wavelength of 400 nm. Wettability analyzes of PPCin thin films were also determined using the water contact angle (WCA) measurement and all thin films were found to have hydrophilic character.

Dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is a widely grown and important food legume which is a major source of mineral nutrition. The present study digs in determining differences in nutrients, organic-amino acid and hormone concentrations of Ispir bean genotypes under different land use conditions. The study sites (32 locations) were identified according to the stratified sampling method in the Ispir district, Erzurum, Turkey, under consideration of bean-cultivated lands and the number of villages. The seed weights were higher for genotype no. 4 (137.5 g) than for genotype no. 14 (131.5 g) and following by all other genotypes. Moreover, values for crude protein content were significantly higher for genotype no. 14 (263.1 g/kg) in comparison to genotype no. 4 (256.9 g/kg) and other genotypes. Therefore, it is concluded that land use impacts seed weight, nutrient, crude protein, amino acid, organic acid and hormone contents of Ispir dry bean. Land use can result economic improvements in crop yields and yield components. Dry bean seed weights were impacted by other crop yield components such as amino acid, organic acid and hormone contents of dry bean.
