Can, Zehra
In this study, enzyme inhibition of urease and hyaluronidase are clinically important functions were examined by different authenticity bee products. Different floral honey, pollen and propolis samples were analyzed in terms of total phenolic compounds (TPC), total flavonoid contents (TFC), ferric reducing antioxidant capacity (FRAP), cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC), and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activities as antioxidant determinants. For the determination of the phenolic composition of the products, RP-UV-HPLC was used. TPC of the honey, pollen and propolis samples were ranged from 17 to 95 and 770 to 989 mg of gallic acid (GAE)/100g, 135-258 mg of GAE/g, and TFC was 1 to 10 mgQE/100g, and 78 to 99 mgQE/100 g, and 9 to 10 mg of QE/g, respectively. Among the bee products, propolis samples were showed the highest phenolic componds, that contained different quantity of protocatequic acid, catechin, caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, ferulic acid and rutin. The urease inhibition vales (IC50) were changed from 7.02 to 33.25 mg/mL, 5.00 to 8.78 and 0.16 to 1.98 mg/mL in the honey, pollen and propolis samples, respectively. The hyaluronidase inhibition values (IC50) were changed from 0.02 to 0.46 g/mL, 0.02 to 0.26 g/mL and 3.26 to 9.21 μg/mL in the honey, pollen and propolis samples, respectively. Honey, pollen and propolis have a significant inhibition on the enzymes, the inhibition may be due to secondary metabolites of phenolic compounds and the mechanism of the inhibition should be studied in detailed.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2018Scopus SJRQ3Effect of long-term natural aging on microstructure and room temperature superplastic behavior of UFG/FG Zn-Al alloys processed by ECAP
Demirtas, M.; Yanar, H.; Purcek, G.
Two potential superplastic compositions of Zn-Al alloy systems, Zn-22Al and Zn-0.3Al alloys, were chosen and processed by equal-channel angular pressing/extrusion (ECAP/E) in order to achieve high strain rate (HSR) superplasticity at room temperature (RT). ECAP-processed samples of both alloys were then subjected to long-term natural aging up to 1100 days to evaluate the effect of long-term natural aging on their microstructures and superplastic behaviors. Before natural aging, the maximum elongations to failure at RT were 400% for ultrafine-grained (UFG) Zn-22Al at the strain rate of 5 × 10 −2 s −1 and 1000% for fine-grained (FG) Zn-0.3Al at the strain rate of 1 × 10 −4 s −1 . Long-term natural aging did not cause a significant change in the elongation of UFG Zn-22Al alloy with 355% maximum elongation. However, optimum strain rate giving the maximum elongation decreased to 3 × 10 −3 s −1 . On the other hand, Zn-0.3Al alloy lost more than half of its superplastic elongation and showed an elongation to failure of 435% at the end of the natural aging period of 1100 days. Microstructural analyses show that grain boundary corrosion occurred in dilute Zn-0.3Al alloy during the natural aging process. Corroded grain boundaries resulted in cavity nucleation during the tensile tests and some of these cavities attained large sizes and caused premature failure.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2018Scopus SJRQ1Self-Calibrating Noniterative Complex Permittivity Extraction of Thin Dielectric Samples
Hasar, Ugur Cem; Kaya, Yunus
A microwave method relying on uncalibrated scattering (S-) parameters is proposed to measure the complex permittivity (ϵr) of thin dielectric samples. It has the following two main advantages. First, it takes into account effect of the sample holder, used for holding the sample, especially important for thin sample electromagnetic property characterization. Second, it does not require any specific information about the location of the sample (and its holder) inside its measurement cell for ϵr extraction. For validation of our method, we applied a commercial three-dimensional electromagnetic simulation program-CST Microwave Studio-and the Lorentz dispersion model. Uncalibrated (as well as calibrated) S-parameter measurements were conducted to measure ϵr of a 0.7 mm thick polyethylene sample (the sample holder was a 5.18 mm thick PVC sample) by our method and other similar methods in the literature. From the comparison, we observed that while the accuracy of tested methods significantly changed with inaccurate knowledge of the sample position inside its cell, the accuracy of our method did not much alter.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2018Scopus SJRQ1Gamma-ray attenuation coefficients and transmission thickness of high consistency heavyweight concrete containing mineral admixture
Gökçe, H.Süleyman; Öztürk, Buket Canbaz; Çam, N.Füsun; Andiç-Çakır, Özge
In the study, high consistency heavyweight concrete mixtures containing barite aggregate were produced by using some common mineral admixtures (viscosity modifier, silica fume and fly ash) at various water/binder ratios and binder contents. Gamma-ray linear attenuation coefficients of the concrete mixtures were determined by using gamma sources of 137Cs and 60Co in NaI(Tl) gamma spectrometry system. The relationship between specimen thickness and transmission of the rays was constituted by emphasizing their mean free path, half-value layer, and tenth-value layer. Moreover, experimental mass attenuation coefficients of the concrete specimens were determined and compared with theoretical mass attenuation coefficients calculated by XCOM software depending on elemental fractions of these concrete in equivalent energies (662 keV, 1173 keV and 1332 keV). As a result, the replacement of the aforementioned admixtures with ordinary cement negatively affected the linear attenuation coefficients of the heavyweight concrete. A relative change of up to 25% was observed between the least and the highest attenuation thickness values at a certain gamma-ray transmission. A good regression relationship has been established between density and linear attenuation coefficients, density and mean free path, and density and half- or tenth-value layers of the heavyweight concrete. Theoretical (XCOM) mass attenuation coefficients were found similar to the experimental mass attenuation coefficients of the heavyweight concretes. Although there is a good linear regression relation between the theoretical and experimental mass attenuation coefficients at 662 keV energy of gamma rays, the relations were disappeared at 1173 and 1332 keV energies of gamma rays.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2018Scopus SJRQ2Free vibration analysis of fiber metal laminated straight beam
Maraş, Sinan; Yaman, Mustafa; Sansveren, Mehmet Fatih; Reyhan, Sina Karimpour
In recent years, studies on the development of new and advanced composite materials have been increasing. Among these new technological products, Fiber Metal Laminates (FML), and hybrid structures made of aluminium, carbon, glass or aramid fiber, are preferred especially in the aircraft industry due to their high performance. Therefore, free vibration analysis is necessary for the design process of such structures. In this study, the vibration characteristics of FML for clamped-free boundary conditions were investigated experimentally and numerically. Firstly, numerical results were obtained using Finite Element Method (FEM) and then these results were compared with the experimental results. It was seen that the numerical results were in good agreement with the experimental results. As the theoretical model was justified, the effects of various parameters such as number of layers, fiber orientations, and aluminium layer thickness on the in-plane vibration characteristics of the FML straight beam were analysed using FEM. Thus, most important parameters affecting the vibration characteristics of the hybrid structures were determined.

- MakaleYalnız künye2018Scopus SJRQ2Influence of freeze-thaw on strength of clayey soil stabilized with lime and perlite
Yilmaz, Fatih; Fidan, Duygu
Stabilization of clayey soil has been studied from past to present by mixing different additives to the soil to increase its strength and durability. In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in stabilization of soils with natural pozzolans. Despite this, very few studies have investigated the impact of pozzolanic additives under freeze-thaw cycling. This paper presents the results of an experimental research study on the durability behavior of clayey soils treated with lime and perlite. For this purpose, soil was stabilized with 6% lime content by weight of dry soil (optimum lime ratio of the the soil), perlite was mixed with it in 0%, 5%, 10%, 20%, 25% and 30% proportions. Test specimens were compacted in the laboratory and cured for 7, 28 and 84 days, after which they were tested for unconfined compression tests. In addition to this, they were subjected to 12 closed system freeze-thaw cycles after curing for 28 days. The results show that the addition of perlite as a pozzolanic additive to lime stabilized soil improves the strength and durability. Unconfined compressive strength increases with increased perlite content. The findings indicate that using natural pozzolan which is cheaper than lime, has positive effect in strength and durability of soils and can result cost reduction of stabilization.

Gul, Osman; Saricaoglu, Furkan Turker; Besir, Aysegul; Atalar, Ilyas; Yazici, Fehmi
Hazelnut meal protein (4% (w/v)) and clove essential oil (CEO) (3% (v/v)) were homogenized with ultrasound (US) at different times (2, 4 and 6 min) and amplitudes (50, 75 and 100%) to obtain nano-emulsion films. Film forming nano-emulsions (FFNs) were analyzed for average particle size (Dz) and zeta potential, and edible film characterization were evaluated depending on US treatment, as well as antibacterial and antioxidant activities. Dz values and zeta potential of FFNs decreased with increasing acoustic energy delivered to nano-emulsion system. Thickness and water solubility of films significantly decreased with increasing US treatment. Films became more transparent depending on US treatment probably due to particle size reduction. Tensile strength (TS) of films significantly increased with US treatment, while elongation at break (EAB) slightly increased. Microstructure of films became more homogeneous after US treatment and caused to lower water vapor permeability. Enrichment with CEO has given the films antibacterial activity against L. monocytogenes, B. subtilis, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa and E. coli, and antioxidant activity, and US application has improved these activities. US technology can be used to improve mechanical, barrier and antimicrobial properties of hazelnut meal protein based edible films enriched with CEO.

Şahin, Engin
Piperonyl ring is found in a number of naturally occurring compounds and possesses enormous biological activities. There are many studies in the literature with compounds containing a piperonyl ring, but there are very few studies on the synthesis of chiral piperonyl carbinol. The objective of this study was to determine the microbial reduction ability of bacterial strains and to reveal the effects of different physicochemical parameters on this reduction ability. A total of 15 bacterial isolates were screened for their ability to reduce 1-(benzo[d][1,3]dioxol-5-yl) ethanone 1 to its corresponding alcohol. Among these isolates Lactobacillus paracasei BD101 was found to be the most successful biocatalyst to reduce the ketone containing piperonyl ring to the corresponding alcohol. The reaction conditions were systematically optimized for the reducing agent L paracasei BD101, which showed high enantioselectivity and conversion for the bioreduction. The preparative scale study was performed, and a total of 3.72 g of (R)-1-(1,3-benzodioxol-5-yl) ethanol in high enantiomeric form (>99% enantiomeric excess) was produced in a mild, cheap, and environment-friendly process. This study demonstrates that L paracasei BD101 can be used as a biocatalyst to obtain chiral carbinol with excellent yield and selectivity.

Fast, accurate and reliable identification and sorting of materials is still a challenge in recycling sector. Scrap metals are often classified through density and colour, which cause notable financial burdens to the companies in most cases. Within the scope of this research, a novel method based on thermal conductivity is presented for material identification in scrap industry. The unit consists of a constant heat flux source and a cooling system, in which axial heat conduction is enabled and radial heat transfer is eliminated. For the steady-state conditions, temperature gradient across the sample metals is measured along with the constant heat flux value, and the thermal conductivity of the samples is determined via the Fourier's heat conduction law. Copper, brass and stainless steel samples are considered in this research to verify the accuracy of the results. For a reliable and scientific approach, three independent sets of experiments are conducted, and the results are evaluated in terms of accuracy and consistency. Experimental thermal conductivity values of the said samples are compared with the reported data in literature and a good accordance is achieved. Error in measurements is calculated to be 1.37, 3.31 and 4.46% for copper, brass and stainless steel sample, respectively which is acceptable. The tests are repeated with highly sensitive probes for aluminium sample, and the measurement error is calculated to be 0.56%.

Global sales of single enantiomeric drug products are growing at an alarming rate every year. A total of 7 bacterial strains were screened for their ability to reduce acetophenones to its corresponding alcohol. Among these strains Lactobacillus paracasei BD87E6 was found to be the most successful biocatalyst to reduce the ketones to the corresponding alcohols. The preparative scale asymmetric reduction of 3-methoxyacetophenone (1h) by Lactobacillus paracasei BD87E6 gave (R)-1-(3-methoxyphenyl)ethanol (2h) with 92% yield and 99% enantiomeric excess. Compound 2h could be used for the synthesis of (S)-rivastigmine which has a great potential for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. This study demonstrates that Lactobacillus paracasei BD87E6 can be used as a biocatalyst to obtain chiral carbinol with excellent yield and selectivity. The whole cell catalyzed the reductions of ketone substrates on the preparative scale, demonstrating that Lactobacillus paracasei BD87E6 would be a valuable biocatalyst for the preparation of chiral aromatic alcohols of pharmaceutical interest.

Yurdakul, Muhammet; Ates, Sevket
This study aims to investigate the stochastic response of isolated and non-isolated highway bridges subjected to spatially varying earthquake ground motion model. This model includes wave passage, incoherence and site response effects. The wave passage effect is examined by using various wave velocities. The incoherency effect is investigated by considering the Harichandran and Vanmarcke coherency model. The site response effect is considered by selecting homogeneous firm, medium and soft soil types where the bridge supports are constructed. The ground motion is described by power spectral density function and applied to each support point. Triple concave friction pendulum (TCFP) bearing which is more effective than other seismic isolation systems is used for seismic isolation. To implement seismic isolation procedure, TCFP bearing devices are placed at each of the support points of the deck. In the analysis, the bridge selected is a five-span featuring cast-in-place concrete box girder superstructure supported on reinforced concrete columns. Foundation supported highway bridge is regarded as three regions and compared its different situation in the stochastic analysis. The stochastic analyses results show that spatially varying ground motion has important effects on the stochastic response of the isolated and non-isolated bridges as long span structures.

- MakaleYalnız künye2018Scopus SJRQ2Determining the Patient-Specific Optimum Osteotomy Line for Severe Mandibular Retrognathia Patients
Şensoy, Abdullah Tahir; Kaymaz, Irfan; Ertaş, Ümit; Kiki, Ali
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to suggest a patient-specific osteotomy line to optimize the distractor position and thus to minimize the disadvantages of conventional mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO) protocols. In addition, this study also aims to compare the conventional MDO protocols with the new MDO protocol proposed in this study in terms of both orthodontic outcomes and mechanical effects of osteotomy level on callus stabilization by means of the finite element method. Methods: A preoperative patient-specific 3-dimensional bone model was created and segmented by using computed tomography images of an individual patient. Virtual orthodontic set-up was applied to the segmented model prior to the virtual surgery. In order to compare the proposed osteotomy line with the conventional lines used in clinical applications, virtual surgery simulations were performed and callus tissues were modelled for each scenario. The comparison of the success of each osteotomy line was carried out based on the occlusion of the teeth. Results: The osteotomy line determined using the method proposed in this study has resulted in far less malocclusion than the conventional method. Namely, any angular deviation from the optimum osteotomy line determined in this study might result in deep-bite or open-bite. On the other hand, the finite element analysis results have indicated that this deviation also negatively affects the callus stability. Conclusion: In order to achieve a better MDO treatment in terms of occlusion of the teeth and the callus stability, the location of the osteotomy line and the distractor position can be computationally determined. The results suggest that MDO protocol developed in this study might be used in clinic to achieve a better outcome from the MDO treatment.

- MakaleYalnız künye2018Scopus SJRQ1Influence of high pressure torsion-induced grain refinement and subsequent aging on tribological properties of Cu-Cr-Zr alloy
Purcek, G.; Yanar, H.; Shangina, D.V.; Demirtas, M.; Bochvar, N.R.; Dobatkin, S.V.
Effects of ultrafine grain formation via high pressure torsion (HPT) and precipitation during aging on the microstructure, mechanical and tribological properties of a Cu-Cr-Zr alloy have been investigated systematically. HPT results in the formation of ultrafine-grained (UFG) structure in the alloy with an average grain/subgrain size of 155 nm which leads to remarkable improvement in its hardness and strength along with a reduction in elongation to failure. Aging of UFG alloy brings about further strengthening due to the precipitation. UFG formation by HPT increases substantially the wear resistance of Cu-Cr-Zr alloy and reduces the friction coefficient. The highest wear resistance and the lowest friction coefficient are obtained on the sample processed by HPT and subsequent aging. The dominant wear mechanism of the alloy varies depending on the applied processes. Adhesion with smearing is the predominant wear mechanism for the initial (warm extruded) samples having coarse-grained (CG) structure. UFG samples show less adhesional effect with less smearing, and a higher tendency to the formation of cracks, abrasion and delamination seem to be dominant in those samples. Oxidative wear mechanism is also operative in both CG and UFG alloy samples. It may be concluded from this study that a combined process including UFG formation by HPT and subsequent precipitation by artificial aging provides a simple and effective processing procedure for improving the strength, hardness and wear resistance of Cu–Cr–Zr alloys without modification of the chemical composition.

In this study, it is aimed to obtain Zn doped Mn3O4 (manganese oxide) nanostructured thin films on the soda lime glass substrates by successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction technique. The tetragonal crystal structure of the all thin films was detected using XRD spectroscopy. The average crystallite size of undoped Mn3O4 thin films was calculated to be 29 nm and for Zn-doped thin films, this value decreased to 23 nm with increasing Zn concentration. Characteristic peaks for thin films were also confirmed by RAMAN spectroscopy. The morphological structures of zinc-doped manganese oxide nano-sheets thin films were revealed by SEM. Using UV–Vis spectroscopy, it was found that the optical band gap of Mn3O4 thin films decreased from 2.05 to 1.73 eV with Zn doping. It has also been understood from the wettability analyzes of thin films that all thin films have a hydrophilic character. From all these analyzes, it is thought that the Zn doped Mn3O4 thin films have the potential to be used in supercapacitor applications.
