Notes on Some Words Recorded as Oghuz in Divânu Lugâti't-Turk

    Güzel, Ferdi

D & icirc;v & acirc;nu Lug & acirc;ti't-T & uuml;rk (DLT) is the very first work that provides information about Turkish dialects. The information given in the work concerning the dialects of that era and their distinctive features hold immeasurable value for the field of Turkish language studies. Besides the Hakaniye dialect, which was the literary language at that time, DLT comprises various information about several Turkish dialects. More than half of the records concerning dialects other than Hakaniye are about Oghuz dialect. Kasgarli often compared the Karakhanid written language with the Oghuz dialect. It isquite understandable to find more information about the Oghuz Turks' dialect than other dialects in DLT because the Seljuk State that managed to become the most powerful state in the Turkish-Islamic geography from the second half of the 11th century onward was the state of the Oghuzs. The vocabulary of the Oghuz dialect presented by Kasgarli in the DLT overlaps substantially with the modern Oghuz dialects. This research focuses on the words a & eng;, etrek, keri & scedil;, k & ouml;n & ccedil;ek, s & ouml;r & ccedil;ek, and yor & imath;g & ccedil;& imath;, all of which are recorded in DLT as Oghuz. Studies on DLT and discussions concerning relevant words in etymological studies has been reviewed, and based on the available evidence from historical and contemporary dialects, Turkey Turkish subdialects being in the first place, new insights are offered about these words

Notes on the Old Turkish Verb arka- “to seek…” and Its Semantic Field; [ESKİ TÜRKÇE ARKA- “ARAMAK…” FİİLİ VE ANLAM ALANI ÜZERİNE NOTLAR]

    Güzel, Ferdi

The verb arka-, whose meaning was only recorded in Old Turkish as “to search, to investigate”, has many unrecorded meanings. Some of these meanings are recorded in later historical and contemporary dialects. Some of them can be identified thanks to the derivatives of the verb. Although the connection between some derivatives of the verb arka- has been mentioned in a few studies, these words have not been associated with each other in most of the studies. According to the data in historical and contemporary dialects, it is understood that the verb arka- has the following meanings: 1. to pass through. 2. to pass between, to extend or place an object between two things. 3. to support, help. 4. to lie diagonally or transversely between two things. 5. to line up in a row. 6. to thread, weave. 7. to send. 8. to follow. 9. to seek, to investigate. The verb arka- is derived from the verb Old Turkish *ar- “to pass through”, with the suffix -kA-, which carries an intensifying function. The core meaning of the verb *ar- and arka- is the same. All meanings of the verb have emerged from the meaning of “to pass through”. It has not been clarified whether the verb ara-, which survives in the Oghuz group Turkish dialects today, and the verb arka- which is recorded as Oghuz in DLT, are the same verb, due to the fact that the *argaintermediate form in the development of arka- > *arga- > ara- has not been detected in any Turkish dialect to date. In addition, in dialects that preserve long vowels, the first vowel of the verb ara- is long, while in derivatives of the verb arka- such as arkış, argaç, the first vowel is short. For these reasons, it does not seem possible to determine with certainty whether the verbs arka- and ara- are the same verb.

    Güzel, Ferdi

The saŋ word which means “bird droppings” is seen for the first time in Karakhanid Turkish. This word, which has several variants in historical and contemporary dialects, has been forgotten in time and has not been able to maintain its existence in most of the contemporary dialects. In Turkish, these words and their derivatives in the historical process with the expansion of meaning “animal manure, dirt, dirt, garbage, trash” and so on meanings have also gained. One of the derivatives of the saŋ word and not just in Turkish dialects of Turkish that has been identified saŋra is derived with + rA (< +Xr +A) which a rare structure.

Gal suffix in the dialects of turkish in turkey

    Güzel, Ferdi

Turkish has a lot of derivative suffixes but some derivative suffixes are rarely seen. Limited samples recorded throughout the history of language are not sufficient to detect the structure and functions of these rare derivative suffixes. In that case, the local dialects must be the first resource to look at.
