Abidi, Wafa; Fall, Estelle; Chalghaf, Nasr; Ceylan, Halil İbrahim; Muntean, Raul Ioan; Dergaa, Ismail; Candar, Reyhan; Özdemir, Kübra; Çingöz, Yunus Emre; Man, Cristina Maria

    While traditional psychological skills training focuses on cognitive control, mindfulness-based approaches emphasize acceptance and present-moment awareness. The Mindfulness-Acceptance-Commitment (MAC) protocol shows promise for enhancing athletic performance; however, limited research has examined its effects on passion and well-being in tennis players. Forty-four competitive male tennis players (M age = 18.1 ± 1.1 years) were randomly assigned to either a MAC intervention group (n = 22) or a passive control group (n = 22). The MAC protocol consisted of seven weekly 45-minute sessions focusing on mindfulness, acceptance, and values-driven behavior. Primary outcomes included tennis serve performance assessed by certified coaches using a standardized 16-serve protocol. Secondary outcomes included mindfulness skills (Mindful Attention Awareness Scale), subjective well-being (Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, Satisfaction with Life Scale), harmonious passion, and obsessive passion (Passion Scale). Intention-to-treat analyses with 44 participants revealed significant improvements in the MAC group compared to controls. Tennis serve performance improved significantly in the MAC group (pre: 13.18 ± 2.19 to post: 15.09 ± 2.45, t(21) = 7.54, p < .001, d = 0.87) but not in the control group (pre: 13.05 ± 2.33 to post: 12.86 ± 2.41, t(21) = 0.78, p = .442, d = 0.08), with a significant between-group difference at post-test (t(42) = 3.71, p = .001, d = 1.12). Mindfulness skills improved substantially in the MAC group (pre: 39.00 ± 4.18 to post: 52.73 ± 3.65, t(21) = 13.76, p < .001, d = 3.28) compared to controls (pre: 43.55 ± 4.75 to post: 44.32 ± 4.12, t(21) = 1.31, p = .203, d = 0.16), with a significant between-group difference (t(42) = 7.16, p < .001, d = 2.16). Harmonious passion increased significantly in the MAC group (pre: 17.27 ± 2.64 to post: 24.05 ± 4.16, t(21) = 6.15, p < .001, d = 2.57) while remaining stable in controls (pre: 17.86 ± 3.75 to post: 16.91 ± 3.61, t(21) = 1.65, p = .114, d = 0.25), with a significant between-group difference (t(42) = 6.40, p < .001, d = 1.93). Obsessive passion decreased in the MAC group (pre: 23.73 ± 3.66 to post: 16.27 ± 2.86, t(21) = 7.54, p < .001, d = 2.04) while remaining unchanged in controls (pre: 18.00 ± 3.85 to post: 18.41 ± 4.04, t(21) = 0.85, p = .406, d = 0.11), with a significant between-group difference (t(42) =-2.02, p = .050, d =-0.61). Subjective well-being improved markedly in the MAC group (pre: 9.00 ± 7.37 to post: 27.09 ± 7.47, t(21) = 8.37, p < .001, d = 2.45) compared to controls (pre: 4.54 ± 5.85 to post: 8.72 ± 6.08, t(21) = 0.65, p = .526, d = 0.71), with a significant between-group difference (t(42) = 6.85, p < .001, d = 2.07). MAC training represents an effective intervention for enhancing tennis performance, psychological well-being, and adaptive passion while reducing maladaptive passion. These findings support the clinical utility of mindfulness-based approaches in tennis psychology and warrant further investigation on a larger scale.

KAHRIMAN, Ilknur; AKSOY, Bahar; KANDAZ, Ufuk; BORAN, Serpil; GÖGER, Berrin; KIRBAŞ, Zila Özlem

Objectives This study investigated the effect of the puppet-assisted House-Tree-Person Test (HTP-T) on fear and anxiety levels in children undergoing chemotherapy treatment and the factors influencing these outcomes. Methods The study employed a one-group pretest–posttest quasi-experimental design combined with HTP-T analysis. The study was conducted with 29 children aged 5–12 years receiving chemotherapy at the pediatric hematology-oncology outpatient clinics of a university hospital in the Eastern Black Sea Region of Türkiye during the 2022–2024 years. Data were collected using “the Demographic Information Form for Children and Parents, the Children's State Anxiety Scale (CSA), the Children's Fear Scale (CFS), and HTP-T". Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, repeated measures ANOVA, and HTP-T analysis. Results Statistically significant differences were observed in children's mean CSA (F = 3.898, p = 0.026, η2 = 0.122) and CFS (F = 5.313, p = 0.008, η2 = 0.159) scores across the pre-treatment, during-treatment, and post-treatment measurements. The HTP-T analysis revealed that children had difficulty regulating anxiety and fear, expressed concerns about family and environmental events, reported feelings of loneliness, and exhibited strong emotional attachment to their families. Conclusion The study demonstrated that incorporating puppet-assisted HTP-T during chemotherapy contributed to reducing children's fear and anxiety and offered a useful approach for identifying influencing factors. Implications for nursing practice HTP-T, a therapeutic play technique incorporating puppetry and projective methods, may be effective in reducing fear and anxiety among children undergoing chemotherapy.

Microwave assisted green synthesis of nano-sized biogenic silver in extract of Phlomis linearis: potential anticancer and antimicrobial activities

Orçan Çayır, İlayda; Tahta, Beyhan; Cömertpay, Sabahattin; Uruş, Serhan; Bülbül, Ali Savaş; Aygan, Ashabil; Aksan, Mehmet Emrah

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are known for their significant anticancer and antimicrobial activities in the field of medicine. In the present study, AgNPs were synthesized using a microwave-assisted green synthesis process, in which Ag(I) ions were reduced by organic compounds extracted from the leaves and stems of Phlomis linearis, an endemic plant which acted as both reducing and stabilizing agents. Although various species of the Phlomis genus have been studied in the literature, the synthesis of the nano-sized biogenic silver with reducing Ag(I) in the extract of the endemic plant P. linearis is reported here for the first study time, along with the evaluations of its bioactive properties. The obtained AgNPs were characterized by optical, structural, morphological, etc. techniques such as Ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis.), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and photoluminescence (PL). Gas chromatography − mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and FT-IR techniques were used in order to evaluate the biochemical-reduction mechanism. When their antimicrobial activities were determined by the well diffusion method on six bacterial strains, the results showed that P. linearis exhibited antimicrobial activity against all tested bacteria. Additionally, the investigation of the anticancer activity of the particles by using the MTS method on a breast cancer cell line (MCF-7) and a healthy human cell population (human umbilical vein endothelial cells [HUVEC]) revealed that our AgNPs were more cytotoxic toward the cancerous cells compared to the non-cancerous ones (p < 0.001).

Effects of Halotherapy as an Adjunct to Preseason Training on Respiratory and Aerobic Outcomes in Elite Female Football Players: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Sarışık, Derya Çetin; Aydın, Ahmet Serhat; Söyler, Mehmet; Zileli, Raif; Özkurt, Ali; Yılmaz, Coskun; Küçük, Hamza; Karataş, Mevlüt

Background: Aerobic capacity and respiratory efficiency are critical determinants of performance in elite female football, characterized by repeated high-intensity efforts and rapid recovery demands. Halotherapy, involving the inhalation of dry salt aerosol, has been shown to improve pulmonary health; however, its effects on exercise-related outcomes in athletic populations remain insufficiently investigated. This study aimed to examine the effects of a 12-week post-training halotherapy intervention on respiratory muscle strength, pulmonary function, and aerobic performance in elite female football players. Methods: Twenty-eight elite female football players competing in the Turkish Women’s First League were randomly assigned to a halotherapy group (HG, n = 14) or a control group (CG, n = 14). Both groups completed an identical preseason training program, while the HG additionally performed 45 min halotherapy sessions three times per week in a controlled halochamber. Pre- and post-intervention assessments included maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressures (MIP, MEP), spirometric parameters (FVC, FEV1, PEF, MVV), and maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) estimated using the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test Level 1 (Yo-Yo IRT1), along with total distance covered. A 2 × 2 mixed-model ANOVA was used to assess time and group × time interaction effects. Results: Significant group × time interactions were observed for MIP, MEP, VO2max, FEV1, PEF, MVV, and Yo-Yo IRT1 performance (p < 0.05), with large effect sizes (ηp2 = 0.269–0.924), favoring the halotherapy group. Forced vital capacity (FVC) increased over time in both groups (p = 0.141), with no significant interaction effect. Changes in the control group were comparatively smaller across most outcomes. Conclusion: Post-training halotherapy was associated with improvements in respiratory muscle strength, ventilatory function, aerobic capacity, and intermittent running performance in elite female football players. These findings suggest that halotherapy may be considered as a complementary, non-invasive strategy to support respiratory and aerobic adaptations. Further research is required to confirm these findings and to clarify the underlying physiological mechanisms. Trial registration: NCT07406386; 6 February 2026.

Experiences of parents of individuals with intellectual disabilities after the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes in Türkiye: a phenomenological study

    Yarımkaya, Erkan; Bakkaloğlu, Hatice

Individuals with intellectual disabilities and their parents, who encounter many barriers in daily life, may experience even more serious problems when faced with a devastating disaster such as an earthquake. For effective earthquake preparation, it is important to identify these problems before the earthquake. However, studies examining the earthquake experiences of individuals with intellectual disabilities and their parents are quite limited. In this context, the aim of the current study was to explore the experiences of parents of individuals with intellectual disabilities who were affected by the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes in Türkiye. This study used the phenomenological qualitative research design. In this study, there were 16 parents, who have children with intellectual disabilities and participated in face-to-face interviews. Interview data were analyzed thematically. Two overarching themes were found: (1) low level of earthquake preparedness, and (2) inaccessible needs. The findings revealed that the majority of parents of individuals with intellectual disabilities made few preparations for the earthquake, could not access many of their needs during and after the earthquake, and could not find a special unit for individuals with disabilities to explain their problems.

Structure-guided discovery of submicromolar 1,2,4-triazole–Schiff-base inhibitors of glutathione reductase

Manap, Sevda; Akar, Hande; Medetalibeyoğlu, Hilal; Atalay, Abdurrahman; Can, Zehra; Kara, Yakup; Alkan, Muzaffer; Beytur, Murat; Yüksek, Haydar; Ortaakarsu, Ahmet Buğra

Glutathione reductase (GR) plays a crucial role in maintaining cellular redox balance and is a promising target for ferroptosis-based cancer therapies. In this study, we report the design, synthesis, and comprehensive evaluation of a novel series of 1,2,4-triazole–Schiff base succinate derivatives (AUR-514–518) as potent GR inhibitors. In vitro Mannervik assays revealed vigorous submicromolar inhibitory activity, with AUR-517 emerging as the most effective (IC50 = 0.471 ± 0.032 μM), significantly surpassing quercetin (IC50 = 214.5 ± 18.5 μM). Antioxidant profiling revealed negligible radical scavenging activity; however, modest CUPRAC responses suggest a target-specific mechanism. To elucidate the molecular determinants of inhibition, we employed deep-learning–assisted protein–ligand affinity predictions, molecular dynamics simulations, MM/GBSA free-energy calculations, and dimensional reduction analyses. These computational studies revealed dual binding modes at both the catalytic site and dimer interface, with AUR-517 forming stable interactions with key catalytic residues, consistent with experimental potency rankings. The RMSD/RMSF profiles indicated enhanced conformational stability of GR–ligand complexes, while binding energy landscapes underscored the superior stability of AUR-517. Consequently, these findings establish the AUR series as a new class of structurally validated GR inhibitors, with AUR-517 representing a lead scaffold for the rational development of ferroptosis-sensitizing agents with translational potential in oncology.

Effects of Parent-Child Coparticipation in Physical Activity on Physical Activity Levels and Motor Skills of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder

    Aydemir, Uğur; Yarımkaya, Erkan

This study aimed to examine the effects of parent-child coparticipation in physical activity (PA) on the PA levels and fundamental motor skills (FMSs) of children with autism spectrum disorder. Participants were assigned to one of the following three groups: (a) a parent-child group (n = 14), (b) a child group (n = 13), and (c) a control group (n = 13). After 8 weeks of intervention, the within-group comparison revealed a significant increase in PA levels and FMSs in children with autism spectrum disorder in the parent-child group and the child group (p < .001). The between-group comparison further showed that children in the parent-child group had statistically higher scores for PA levels and FMSs than children in the child and control groups (p < .001). These findings suggest that parent-child coparticipation in PA may be a promising component of family-based interventions to promote PA and facilitate the acquisition of FMSs among children with autism spectrum disorder.

Parents’ perspectives on the use of artificial intelligence chatbots to promote physical activity among individuals with autism spectrum disorder

    Yarımkaya, Erkan; Aydemir, Uğur

Purpose: Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have led to the increasing use of chatbots to promote physical activity (PA) through personalised guidance and interactive feedback. However, little is known about how AI chatbots can support parents of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in promoting home-based PA. Understanding parents’ perspectives on the use of AI chatbots to promote PA may be critical for designing practical guidance and interventions for individuals with ASD. Therefore, the present study aimed to examine parents’ perspectives on the use of AI chatbots to promote PA among individuals with ASD using the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TpB). Method: Participants in this descriptive qualitative study were 16 parents (13 females and 3 males) who participated in one-on-one semi-structured interviews. The interviews were transcribed for analysis and later analysed using thematic line-by-line analysis. Results: The findings revealed that parents had positive attitudes towards the use of AI chatbots to promote PA among individuals with ASD. According to parents, AI chatbots were useful for learning new information about PA and increasing PA levels among individuals with ASD. On the other hand, parents stated that AI chatbots did not provide much detail about some PAs and that they did not understand some PA terms. Therefore, parents stated that they repeatedly gave AI chatbots commands/prompts for each PA and often needed expert support. Conclusions: Results indicated a need for guidance to parents on the use of AI chatbots to promote PA among individuals with ASD.

Eccentric Isokinetic Rehabilitation for Chronic Lateral Epicondylitis in Female Swimmers: A Randomized Controlled Trial of Bilateral Neuromuscular Adaptations and Functional Performance

Dhahbi, Wissem; Ghouili, Hatem; Ceylan, Halil İbrahim; Adhadhi, Nessrine; Bchini, Souhail; Bessifi, Manel; Ceylan, Nagihan Burçak; Stefanica, Valentina; Ouerghi, Nejmeddine; Hammami, Nadhir

Background and Objectives: This study investigated the efficacy of eccentric isokinetic muscle strengthening versus passive motion protocols on neuromuscular function and performance capacity in female swimmers with chronic lateral epicondylitis. Materials and Methods: Twenty-five swimmers (age 46.1 ± 3.1 years) with lateral epicondylitis exceeding three months’ duration completed a randomized controlled trial comparing eccentric training in Controlled Active Motion mode (experimental group (EG), n = 13) against passive motion in Continuous Passive Motion mode (control group (CG), n = 12). Both groups performed 18 supervised sessions over six weeks (60°/s angular velocity, progressive loading 1–12 sets × 5 repetitions). Bilateral concentric peak torque of elbow extensors and flexors constituted the primary outcomes. Secondary measures included push-up performance, explosive power assessed by the Seated Medicine Ball Chest Push Test, and goniometric range of motion. Linear mixed-effects models and analysis of covariance with baseline adjustment were employed. Results: Eccentric training produced side-specific strength adaptations in elbow flexors (confirmed interaction: F1,23 = 8.56, p = 0.008, ηp2 = 0.271), with the experimental group demonstrating balanced bilateral gains, whereas the control group exhibited asymmetric responses favoring the non-dominant limb. EG demonstrated superior functional gains: push-up repetitions increased 4.15 ± 1.77 versus 2.17 ± 1.27 in CG (adjusted difference = 3.21 repetitions, 95% CI [1.52, 4.90], p = 0.001, d = 1.31), while explosive power improved 0.32 ± 0.09 m versus 0.10 ± 0.06 m (adjusted difference = 0.35 m, 95% CI [0.25, 0.45], p < 0.001, d = 1.20). Range of motion remained unchanged across groups (all p > 0.65). Conclusions: Eccentric isokinetic strengthening confers substantial advantages over passive motion protocols for restoring upper-body muscular endurance and ballistic force production in swimmers with lateral epicondylitis, supporting its integration into rehabilitation frameworks for the management of tendinopathy.

Differential Time-of-Day Effects of Caffeine Capsule and Mouth Rinse on Physical Performance and Volleyball-Specific Skills in Adolescent Male Volleyball Players

Amor, Salma Belhaj; Dhahbi, Wissem; Souaifi, Marouen; Ceylan, Halil İbrahim; Padulo, Johnny; Vando, Stefano; Ceylan, Nagihan Burçak; Muntean, Raul Ioan; Souissi, Nizar

Objective: This study compared the acute effects of caffeine capsule ingestion and caffeine mouth rinsing on physical performance and volleyball-specific skills at different times of day in trained adolescent male volleyball players. Methods: Twenty-four well-trained male volleyball players (age: 16.9 ± 0.7 years) completed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study involving three supplementation conditions, caffeine capsule (CAFcap, 3 mg·kg−1), caffeine mouth rinse (CAFrinse, 3 mg·kg−1), and placebo (PLA), administered via a double-dummy procedure (nine sessions per participant: 3 conditions × 3 times of day) at 08:00, 12:00, and 18:00. Participants completed squat jump (SJ), countermovement jump (CMJ), block jump, attack jump, 10 × 10 m t-test, spike accuracy, and serve accuracy assessments. Data were analyzed using two-way repeated-measures ANOVA. Results: Significant main effects of condition and time of day were observed for all outcomes. Significant condition × time-of-day interactions were found for SJ, CMJ, attack jump, and change-of-direction speed, indicating that caffeine-related ergogenic effects were most evident in the morning and at midday, whereas these benefits were attenuated in the evening when baseline performance was highest. At 08:00 and 12:00, both CAFcap and CAFrinse improved jump performance and agility compared with PLA, with capsule ingestion showing a small-to-moderate advantage over mouth rinsing for selected lower-limb power outcomes at midday (mean difference range: 0.51–0.57 cm; dz = 0.57–0.65). For block jump, spike accuracy, and serve accuracy, both caffeine conditions improved performance relative to placebo, while a progressive improvement across the day was observed under all conditions, including placebo, confirming a diurnal rhythm effect independent of supplementation. Overall, the data indicate that caffeine partially reduced the amplitude of diurnal variation in several physical performance measures. Conclusions: Both caffeine capsule ingestion and caffeine mouth rinsing enhanced physical and volleyball-specific performance in trained adolescent male volleyball players. The ergogenic effects were more pronounced earlier in the day, suggesting that caffeine may be particularly useful for attenuating morning and midday performance decrements, while mouth rinsing represents a practical non-ingestive alternative with meaningful efficacy.

The role of biotics and bioactive compounds in sports injuries: a narrative review

Şahin-Demirci, Kezban; Dal, Nursel; Gönen-Çolak, Buket; Akman, Onur; Raposa, Bence; Ağagündüz, Duygu

Sports injuries affect not just the physical, but also the psychological, social, and professional aspects of athletes’ lives. Preventive strategies, nutrition, and nutritional supplements—especially biotics and bioactive compounds—are crucial for recovery and may help prevent injury recurrence. This review examines biotics and bioactive compounds that may be effective on sports injuries, revealing their potential benefits and safety of use. Using a comparative and interpretive approach, the pertinent literature was thoroughly examined for this review, with a special focus on clinical and preclinical research conducted within the last 5 years. Bioactive compounds and biotics (prebiotics: indigestible substances that support beneficial bacteria; probiotics: live beneficial microorganisms; postbiotics: bioactive microbial metabolites) can improve sports-related injuries by affecting inflammation, mitochondrial function, biogenesis, oxidative stress, and atrophy. Biotics achieve these systemic effects by improving intestinal barrier function and modulating the microbiota. Current literature indicates that some compounds show promise for treating sports injuries, but human study evidence is limited. Animal models provide useful insights for future research. Finally, polyphenolic compounds, amino acids/peptides, and w-3 fatty acids, thanks to their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, can indirectly contribute to muscle regeneration and cell repair, thus supporting the recovery process in athletes. However, it is still too early to make recommendations regarding the use of biotics and bioactive compounds in sports injuries.

Keys to female athlete performance in Paris 2024

Boz, Emre; Adatepe, Eda; Çelik, Hüsniye; Kırkbir, Hakan; Öktem, Tuncay; Ünlü, Yılmaz; Öz, Ümit; Yılmaz, Büşra

The research was conducted to identify the key factors influencing the performance of Turkish female athletes participating in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. In this context, seven female Olympic athletes who participated in the relevant organization volunteered to take part in the research. A semi-structured interview form prepared by the researchers was used to identify the participants’ views on the factors affecting their performance. Individual interviews were conducted with each participant at different times, and all interviews were recorded. All interview transcripts obtained were analyzed and visualized using MAXQDA 2020 software. In the study, the experiences of female athletes were grouped under five themes: factors most affecting performance, environmental factors, physiological factors, socio-cultural factors, and psychological factors. The findings show that the athletes’ experiences are not limited to athletic performance alone, but are also influenced by multidimensional factors such as organizational shortcomings, environmental conditions, psychological pressure, socio-cultural interactions, and physiological conditions. In the study, first-time participants were positively influenced by motivation, team support, and communication with foreign athletes, while experienced athletes, having higher expectations, criticized factors such as organizational shortcomings, hygiene, and nutrition issues. The study reveals that the factors affecting the performance of female athletes are multidimensional and interactive, emphasizing the importance of comprehensively considering physiological, psychological, environmental, and socio-cultural needs in the planning of international sports organizations. In particular, strengthening health support, nutrition services, cultural adaptation, and social support mechanisms are recommended as measures that will increase athletes’ performance and experience satisfaction.

Evening chronotype and highly processed food consumption: The mediating role of intuitive eating

    Esgin, Özge; Ünal, G.

This study examined associations among chronotype, intuitive eating, and highly processed food (HPF) consumption and evaluated the mediating role of intuitive eating, with sex as a potential moderator. This cross-sectional study, conducted via an online survey in Türkiye from October 2025 to January 2026, included 610 adults. Participants completed the Morningness–Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ), the Intuitive Eating Scale–2 (IES–2), and the Screening Questionnaire of HPF Consumption. The IES–2 comprises four dimensions: unconditional permission to eat (UPE), eating for physical rather than emotional reasons (EPR), reliance on hunger and satiety cues, and body-food choice congruence (B-FCC). Among participants, 20.3% had an evening chronotype, and 68% reported high HPF consumption. Eveningness was associated with higher UPE (β = 0.219, p = 0.002) and EPR (β = 0.148, p = 0.032) and lower B-FCC (β = −0.225, p = 0.002); however, a sex difference emerged only for EPR, with a weaker association in women (β = −0.155, p = 0.029). Lower MEQ scores were significantly associated with higher HPF consumption (β = −0.212, p < 0.001), with no significant sex differences. All analyses were adjusted for age and body mass index. Mediation analyses indicated that UPE (indirect effect: −0.013 for women; −0.022 for men) and B-FCC (−0.006 for women; −0.013 for men) had significant indirect effects linking chronotype to HPF consumption, with no moderating effect of sex. These findings suggest that intuitive eating mechanisms may partly explain the association between evening chronotype and higher HPF consumption.

Association Between Health Literacy and Mediterranean Diet Adherence Among Adult Women in Türkiye

    Çam, Alper Veli; Şik, Elif

Objective: Health literacy is widely recognized as an important determinant of informed health-related decision-making. However, evidence regarding whether health literacy translates into healthy eating behaviors, particularly adherence to the Mediterranean diet, remains limited. This study aimed to examine the association between health literacy levels and adherence to the Mediterranean diet among adult women living in Türkiye. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted with 400 women aged 18 years and older residing in Türkiye. Data were collected using a sociodemographic information form, the Turkish Health Literacy Scale–Short Form, and the Mediterranean Diet Quality Index (KIDMED). Health literacy levels were categorized as inadequate, problematic–limited, adequate, and excellent, while Mediterranean diet adherence was classified as low, moderate, or optimal. Ordinal logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the association between health literacy and adherence to the Mediterranean diet, adjusting for sociodemographic variables (age, education, income, and occupation). Findings: Among the participants, 25.3% had inadequate health literacy, 31.8% had problematic–limited health literacy, 34.0% had adequate health literacy, and 9.0% had excellent health literacy. Mediterranean diet adherence was low in 34.5% of participants, moderate in 52.3%, and optimal in 13.3%. The ordinal logistic regression analysis revealed that, after adjusting for sociodemographic variables, one dimension of health literacy (Cognitive Health Literacy) was significantly associated with Mediterranean diet adherence, whereas no significant association was observed for the other dimension. Conclusion: The findings suggest that certain dimensions of health literacy may be associated with adherence to the Mediterranean diet when sociodemographic factors are taken into account. These results highlight the importance of considering both individual knowledge and contextual factors in understanding dietary behavior. Future research should further explore the role of nutrition-specific literacy and structural determinants in shaping healthy eating practices.

Evaluation of post-traumatic stress disorder and food insecurity in earthquake survivors

Köktürk, Seda Nur; Esgin, Özge; Bulbul, Ali Savas; Sahin, Engin

Aim: This study aimed to investigate the psychological difficulties and challenges related to food insecurity following the earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş province on February 6, 2023, particularly examining the relationship between Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and food insecurity among survivors. Subjects and methods: The research included 504 adults (71.4% female). The study assessed the subcomponents of food insecurity and measured PTSD levels among participants. It also evaluated the prevalence of Gastrointestinal System (GIS) issues and appetite loss. Results: Individuals facing food insecurity exhibited higher median PTSD scores compared to those not experiencing food insecurity. A significant majority of individuals with PTSD (90.2%) also encountered GIS issues, with a notable prevalence of appetite loss. GIS problems were common among those experiencing food insecurity. Conclusion: Many disaster victims endure both food insecurity and PTSD, negatively impacting their dietary habits and health. Providing clean, dependable, and nutritious food post-disaster can reduce health risks. Psychological support and therapy for PTSD can aid recovery. More detailed studies on nutritional status are needed for deeper insights.
