- MakaleYalnız künye2016Scopus SJRQ3Renewable energy status and hydropower in some developing countries and focus on Turkey
Yuksel, Ibrahim; Arman, Hasan; Serencam, Ugur; Songur, Mehmet; Demirel, I. Halil
The share of renewable energies varies quite a lot in the developing countries, both in terms of total primary energy and electricity generation. Several different policy instruments are in use for promoting renewable energies, such as quota obligations, price subsidies, and taxes/tax exemptions on energy. Some countries such as Turkey, also have specific political programs for renewable energies. The obstacles and success conditions mainly deal with geographical, economic, administrative and political factors. The Republic of Turkey forms a natural bridge between Europe and Asia and the country has a relatively young population in both Europe and Asia. Turkey aims to utilize its energy potential, including from renewable sources, in a cost-effective manner. In its efforts to promote renewable energy, the government has focused on electricity, but has recently started to pay more attention to heat. On the other hand, Turkey's geographical location has several advantages for extensive use of most of the renewable energy sources. In this regard, renewable energy resources appear the most efficient and effective solutions for clean and sustainable energy development in Turkey. In addition to Turkey has a great hydropower, especially small hydropower potential. This paper deals with Turkey's renewable energy status in developing countries.

Pat, Suat; Özen, Soner; Şenay, Volkan; Korkmaz, Şadan
In this study, optical and surface properties of the optically transparent Li3PO4 solid electrolyte layer for transparent solid battery have been investigated for the first time. To determine the optical properties, transmittance, absorbance, reflection, refractive index spectra, and optical band gap were determined by UV-Vis spectrophotometer and optical interferometer. The surface property of the transparent Li3PO4 solid electrolyte was analyzed using atomic force microscopy. One another important parameter is contact angle (CA) surface free energy (SFE). CA and SFE were determined by optical tensiometer. These values probably are a most important parameter for polymer and hybrid battery performance. For the best performance, value of CA should be low. As a result, solid electrolyte layer is a highly transparent and it has a high wettability. SCANNING 38:317–321, 2016.

Purcek, G.; Yanar, H.; Demirtas, M.; Alemdag, Y.; Shangina, D.V.; Dobatkin, S.V.
Properties of Cu-Cr-Zr alloy with ultrafine-grained (UFG) structure produced by equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) via different routes have been investigated. Special attention was paid to the optimization of multi-functional structural, thermal, electrical and mechanical properties of the alloy by aging of UFG one. Multi-pass ECAP via different routes gives rise to the formation of a deformation-induced submicrocrystalline structure with the grain (subgrain) sizes in the range of 200-300. nm depending on applied routes which leads to high hardness and strength in the Cu-Cr-Zr alloy with reduced ductility. Amongst the applied routes, route-Bc was found to be the best processing path for achieving the lowest grain size, the highest hardness and strength. Aging of 8Bc-processed UFG samples increases the hardness and strength of Cu-Cr-Zr alloy while retaining an electrical conductivity comparable to that of aged coarse-grained (CG) one. A satisfactory electrical conductivity of 71%IACS without considerable loss of peak hardness was achieved after aging of 8Bc-processed UFG alloy at 425. °C for 240. min. The precipitation strengthened UFG alloy remains its stable behavior at elevated temperatures up to 450. °C.

Cobalt doped GaAs thin films with the thickness of 100 nm and 200 nm were deposited on glass substrates by a thermionic vacuum arc system. The optical and surface properties were investigated as functions of the film thickness. The refractive index of the films decreased with the increasing thickness. A band gap value of 1.42 eV was obtained for the 100 nm film and 1.38 eV for the 200 nm film from the Tauc plots of (αhν)2 vs. hν. According to the results obtained from the AFM studies, the root mean square surface roughness of the films were nm and 3.13 nm for the 100 nm and 200 nm film, respectively.

- MakaleYalnız künye2016Scopus SJRQ1A receding contact problem between a functionally graded layer and two homogeneous quarter planes
Adıyaman, Gökhan; Birinci, Ahmet; Öner, Erdal; Yaylacı, Murat
In this paper, the plane problem of a frictionless receding contact between an elastic functionally graded layer and two homogeneous quarter planes is considered when the graded layer is pressed against the quarter planes. The top of the layer is subjected to normal tractions over a finite segment. The graded layer is modeled as a non-homogeneous medium with a constant Poisson’s ratio and exponentially varying shear modules. The problem is converted into the solution of a Cauchy-type singular integral equation in which the contact pressure and the receding contact half-length are the unknowns using integral transforms. The singular integral equation is solved numerically using Gauss–Jacobi integration. The corresponding receding contact half-length that satisfies the global equilibrium condition is obtained using an iterative procedure. The effect of the material non-homogeneity parameter on the contact pressure and on the length of the receding contact is investigated.

- MakaleYalnız künye2016Scopus SJRQ2ANN based investigations of reliabilities of the models for concrete under triaxial compression
Öztekin, Ertekin
Purpose - A lot of triaxial compressive models for different concrete types and different concrete strength classes were proposed to be used in structural analyses. The existence of so many models creates conflicts and confusions during the selection of the models. In this study, reliability analyses were carried out to prevent such conflicts and confusions and to determine the most reliable model for normal- and high-strength concrete (NSC and HSC) under combined triaxial compressions. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach - An analytical model was proposed to estimate the strength of NSC and HSC under different triaxial loadings. After verifying the validity of the model by making comparisons with the models in the literature, reliabilities of all models were investigated. The Monte Carlo simulation method was used in the reliability studies. Artificial experimental data required for the Monte Carlo simulation method were generated by using artificial neural networks. Findings - The validity of the proposed model was verified. Reliability indexes of triaxial compressive models were obtained for the limit states, different concrete strengths and different lateral compressions. Finally, the reliability indexes were tabulated to be able to choose the best model for NSC and HSC under different triaxial compressions. Research limitations/implications - Concrete compressive strength and lateral compression were taken as variables in the model. Practical implications - The reliability indexes were tabulated to be able to choose the best model for NSC and HSC under different triaxial compressions. Originality/value - A new analytical model was proposed to estimate the strength of NSC and HSC under different triaxial loadings. Reliability indexes of triaxial compressive models were obtained for the limit states, different concrete strengths and different lateral compressions. Artificial experimental data were obtained by using artificial neural networks. Four different artificial neural networks were developed to generate artificial experimental data. They can also be used in the estimations of the strength of NSC and HSC under different triaxial loadings.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2016Scopus SJRQ1An experimental study on the ultra-fine grinding of gypsum ore in a dry ball mill
Öksüzoğlu, Bilge; Uçurum, Metin
Gypsum is a crystalline form of hydrated calcium sulfate (CaSO4·2H20) generally used in cements and plasters in the construction industry, though also in paints, fertilizers, medicines, papers, and textiles. For use in these materials, gypsum must be ground finely (<100 μm), if not ultra-finely (<10 μm), for which ball mills are most effective. Despite gypsum's widespread use and the regular need to grind it, studies concerning the grinding of gypsum ore remain scarce. In response, in this study, we have systematically investigated how certain grinding parameters (i.e., mill speed, ball filling ratio, ball size distribution, powder filling ratio, grinding aid ratio, and grinding time) of conventional dry ball mills affect the grindability of gypsum ore. We determined the properties of the micronized gypsum products obtained in optimal grinding conditions, and the results showed that the dry ball mill grinding process can effectively produce ultra-fine gypsum products.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2016Scopus SJRQ1Fuzzy multicriteria decision making method based on the improved accuracy function for interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy sets
Şahin, Rıdvan
A new accuracy function for the theory of interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy set, which overcomes some difficulties arising in the existing methods for determining rank of interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy numbers, is proposed by taking into account the hesitancy degree of interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy sets. By comparing it with several proposed accuracy functions, the necessity and efficiency of our accuracy function are provided by giving related examples. A fuzzy multicriteria decision making method is established to select the best alternative in multicriteria decision making process which is taken as interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy set of criterion values for alternatives. While aggregating the interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy information corresponding to each alternative, we utilize the interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy weighted aggregation operators. Then the accuracy degree of the aggregated interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy information is computed via the new proposed accuracy function. Thus, we can rank all the alternatives according to the accuracy function and choose the optimal one(s). Finally, an illustrative example is given to demonstrate the practicality and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Zirek, Duygu; Celebi, Fusun; Kabir Hassan, M.
In this paper, we investigate the impact of Islamic banking variables on economic growth in a panel setting for 14 member countries of the Organization of Islamic Countries during 1999-2011 period. We examine the short-run effects as well as long-run effects by employing the Panel VAR method. We find a positive and significant relationship between Islamic finance and economic growth. This relationship is robust with regard to several macroeconomic control variables such as capital stock, unemployment, inflation, and government expenditure. We show that an increase in the share of Islamic deposits, assets, and loans in total banking instruments results in an increase in economic growth. The results also show that in the long run, economic growth responds positively to shocks in Islamic instruments, namely Islamic deposits, investments, and size. Shocks in Islamic banking contribute to more than 3% of the forecast error in economic growth in the next 10 year period.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2016Scopus SJRQ2Effect of external magnetic field on the Kβ/Kα X-ray intensity ratios of TixNi1-x alloys excited by 59.54 and 22.69 keV photons
Perişanoğlu, Ufuk; Alım, Bünyamin; Uğurlu, Mine; Demir, Lütfü
The effects of external magnetic field and exciting photon energies on the Kβ/Kα X-ray intensity ratios of various alloy compositions of Ti-Ni transition metal alloys have been investigated in this work using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. The spectrum of characteristic K-X-ray photons from pure Ti, pure Ni and TixNi1-x (x=0.30; 0.40; 0.50; 0.60; 0.70) alloys were detected with a high resolution Si (Li) solid-state detector. Firstly, Kβ/Kα X-ray intensity ratios of pure Ti, pure Ni and TixNi1-x alloys were measured following excitation by 59.54 keV γ-rays from a 200 mCi 241Am radioactive point source without any magnetic field and under 0.5 and 1 T external magnetic fields, separately. Later, the same measurements were repeated under the same experimental conditions for 22.69 keV X-rays from a 370 MBq109Cd radioactive point source. The results obtained for Kβ/Kα X-ray intensity ratios of pure Ti, pure Ni, Ti and Ni in various Ti-Ni alloys were evaluated in terms of both external magnetic field effect and exciting photon energy effect. When the results obtained for both exciting photon energies are evaluated in terms of changing of Kβ/Kα X-ray intensity ratios depending on the alloy composition, the tendency of these changes are observed to be similar. Also, Kβ/Kα X-ray intensity ratios for all samples examined have changed with increasing external magnetic field. Therefore, the results obtained have shown that Kβ/Kα X-ray intensity ratios of Ti and Ni in TixNi1−x alloys are connected with the external magnetic field. The present study makes it possible to perform reliable interpretation of experimental Kβ/Kα X-ray intensity ratios for Ti, Ni and TixNi1−x alloys and can also provide quantitative information about the changes of the Kβ/Kα X-ray intensity ratios of these metals with alloy composition.

This study discusses the influence of working pressure on the surface energy of the ITO thin films produced by radio frequency magnetron sputtering method. Optical tensiometer (Attension Theta Lite) is used for evaluating wetting behavior of the water droplet on the film surface and Equation of State method was selected to determine surface free energy for this study. Equation of state method does not divide the surface tension into different components such as polar, dispersive, acid-base. It is calculated the surfaces' free energy measuring the contact angle with a single liquid. The surface free energy value was in the range of 15-31 mN/m. Also, the transmittances were determined in the wavelength range between 200 and 1000 nm using the UNICO 4802 UV-Vis double beam spectrophotometer. Transmittances of the produced ITO thin films are greater than %70 in the visible range.

Karaali, R.
Ammonia-water power cycles are important for efficient utilization of low temperature heat sources such as geothermal, solar, waste heat sources, etc. For some special conditions ammonia-water power cycle is an important and economical option. This paper presents an exergetic analysis of a combined power and cooling cycle that uses ammonia-water mixture as working fluid. Such cycles, use solar or geothermal energy or waste heat energy from a conventional power cycle. Ammonia-water power cycle can be used as independent cycles to provide power output and cooling. For a range (25-55 Bar) of boiler pressure the performance of the combined power and cooling cycle is investigated. The exergy of the boiler is very low compared to its energy. There is a boiling process and a heat transfer process at low temperature, both of which destruct the energy given to the boiler, so that the energy efficiency is low; however the exergy efficiency is higher than the energy efficiency. Increasing the turbine inlet pressure decreases the energy and exergy efficiencies.

The effects of Cephalaria syriaca flour on the quality of sunn pest-damaged wheat were investigated. Sunn pest-damaged wheat was blended into sound wheat at different levels (5, 10 and 15%). C. syriaca flour was then added at 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5% levels. The rheological properties of sunn pest-damaged wheat flour with added C. syriaca flour were considerably improved, in particular with regard to farinograph characteristics (dough stability, mixing tolerance index [MTI] and degree of softening [DS]) and instrumental textural properties (area and maximum resistance) compared to control. The dough stability value increased significantly (P<0.01) as C. syriaca flour level increased for all sunn pest-damaged wheat levels. The addition of sunn pest-damaged wheat at 15% level greatly increased the MTI and DS values of dough (202.5 and 282.5 BU); however, the addition of 1.5% C. syriaca to this blend significantly decreased these values (87 and 94.5 BU; P<0.01).

- MakaleAçık Erişim2016Scopus SJRQ2Effect of laser irradiation on activation energy, irreversibility field and upper critical magnetic field of bulk MgB2 superconductor
Erdem, O.; Yanmaz, E.
In this study, the role of laser irradiation on the upper critical field (Hc2), the irreversibility field (Hirr) and the activation energy (U0) of bulk MgB2 superconductor was first time investigated with the aid of magnetoresistivity measurements conducted at different applied magnetic fields in a range of 0–15 kOe as a function of temperature from 25 to 40 K. For this aim, a disk shaped MgB2 superconductor was produced and cut into two pieces. One of the pieces was irradiated under high vacuum conditions by using an Nd:YVO4 laser. The obtained results showed an increase in the critical temperature (Tc) by about 1 K after irradiation. Also, the values of Hc2(0) were respectively found to be around 143 and 151 kOe while the values of Hirr(0) were about 122 and 130 kOe for the reference and the irradiated samples. Using the thermally activated flux flow model the dependence of U0 on magnetic field was determined. The maximum U0 values of 0.43 and 0.83 eV in zero magnetic field were respectively obtained for the reference and the irradiated samples. Also, the magnetic field dependence of the critical current density Jc(B) values at different temperatures were slightly increased after the irradiation. These results point out that the superconducting properties of bulk MgB2 can be improved via laser irradiation.

Artar, Musa
A Harmony Search (HS) and Genetic Algorithms (GA), two powerful metaheuristic search techniques, are used for minimum weight designs of different truss structures by selecting suitable profile sections from a specified list taken from American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). A computer program is coded in MATLAB interacting with SAP2000-OAPI to obtain solution of design problems. The stress constraints according to AISC-ASD (Allowable Stress Design) and displacement constraints are considered for optimum designs. Three different truss structures such as bridge, dome and tower structures taken from literature are designed and the results are compared with the ones available in literature. The results obtained from the solutions for truss structures show that optimum designs by these techniques are very similar to the literature results and HS method usually provides more economical solutions in multi-element truss problems.
