Determination of Physicochemical Properties, Powder Flow Behavior and Particle Size Parameters of Goat Milk Powders with Different Fat Content

    Sert, Durmuş; Mercan, Emin

In this study, the effects of different fat ratios on some physicochemical properties, powder flow behavior (caking, cohesion and powder flow speed dependent properties) and particle size of goat milk powder were investigated. For this purpose, skim (SMP) and whole goat milk powders (WMP) were produced by spray-drying method. The tapped bulk density was determined as 0.71 g cm-3 in the SMP and 0.57 g cm-3 in the WMP. The solubility in both samples was 99.80%. The caking strength of SMP (-0.190 N.mm) was found to be significantly low compared to that of WMP (26.734 N.mm). The cohesion index of SMP was found to be 21.7, and that of the WMP was 42.2. Depending on the increasing speed, cohesion index values were found to be lower in SMP compared WMP. In both samples the compression coefficients decreased with increasing speed. At a speed of 100 mm s-1 , the compression coefficient of SMP was 38.6 N.mm, while this value was 63.3 N.mm for WMP. The D[4,3] value was determined as 44.0 µm in SMP and 34.2 µm in WMP. The results of powder flow analysed revealed that crucial data on the flow behavior of goat milk powder.

Suppression of the Anabaptists Forcing Luther to Social and Political Reform

    Keleş, Hatice

The Reformation movement that emerged in the 16th century is seen as the success of Martin Luther, who tried to establish his own authority against the authority of the Pope and the clergy. However, although the reform movement was the success of Luther, it did not progress as he wanted, and while Luther wanted to realize his reform in line with his aims, this reform led to the emergence of different groups in addition to the Catholic Church against Luther. The Reformation also encouraged and guided some clergy who had questions about the Catholic world and Bible practices. Thus, in that era, the diversity and differentiation in the ways of religious thought and perception led to the emergence of many different groups. One of these groups was named Anabaptist because they claimed that adult baptism is true baptism, and they went down in history as the "Radical Movement" due to these contrary beliefs. In this research, we tried to cover some of the heated debates between the Anabaptist leaders and Luther, Luther's attitude towards them, and partly the Peasants' War.

The Effect of Using Different Exhaustion Intervals and Mathematical Models on Critical Power Estimations

Balcı, Görkem Aybars; Ozkaya, Ozgur; Norouzi, Mahdi; Çabuk, Refık; As, Hakan

Predicted critical power (CP) varies up to 5-20% depending on the preferred mathematical model and different time to exhaustion intervals. Those differentiation rates related to CP estimations cause some contradictory results. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between CP predictions obtained from three different exhaustion approaches (short: 2-10 minutes; medium: 2-15 minutes; long: 2-20 minutes) using five mathematical models (linear total work (CP1), linear 1/time (CP2), nonlinear 2-parameter (CP3), nonlinear 3-parameter (CP4) and exponential (CP5)), and other indices such as maximal lactate steady-state (MLSS), ventilatory threshold (VT), respiratory compensation point (RCP) and critical threshold (CT). 10 well trained male cyclists voluntarily participated in the study. VT and RCP levels of the athletes were determined by incremental ramp tests. Constant work rate exercises were applied on different days to determine maximal oxygen uptake, peak power output, MLSS, CT and CP. Obtained data were tested by validity analysis. As mathematical models and exhaustion intervals changed, the CP predictions varied up to 20%. Except the CP4, other CP estimations were higher than the work rates corresponding to the MLSS and VT (p<0.05). The CP5, which was estimated by short exhaustion interval, corresponded to the work rates belonging to the CT and RCP (p>0.05; standard error of estimate ~4% and r>0.95). Regardless of the preferred exhaustion interval, CP predictions obtained from the other mathematical models were insufficient to estimate any of anaerobic threshold indices (p<0.05). As a result, the CP5 estimated by short exhaustion interval can be used to predict the work rates corresponded to the CT and RCP. It was not appropriate to estimate the other threshold intensities by the CP.

Apay, Ahmet Celal; Çaglar, Hakan; Çimen, Selçuk; Çağlar, Arzu; Kale, Mehmet Oğuzhan

In this study, it was aimed to determine the effects of industrial waste fly ash substitution on physical and mechanical properties of lightweight concrete. In this respect, lightweight concrete samples were produced by the use of fly ash as a cement replacement material in different proportions (1%, 3% and 5%). In lightweight concrete production, the Nevşehir region acidic pumice has been used as aggregate. The physical and mechanical properties of these lightweight concrete samples were investigated and microstructural analysis was carried out. To determine the physical differences, dry unit volume weight, capillary water absorption, porosity, compactness and freezethaw experiments were conducted. For the determination of mechanical properties, tensile splitting strength and compressive strength tests were applied. SEM images have been interpreted to examine the structural differences occurring within the material. As a result of the study, it was determined that the physical and mechanical properties of the ligtweight concrete were improved with the increase in the amount of fly ash. The best results were obtained from sample with 5% fly ash substitution. The use of industrial waste in a large sector such as construction, which adversely affects the ecological balance, will be an opportunity to dispose of waste.

A different conceptual relationship in the language - sense systems: the principle of directionality in the sample of old turkic

    Azili, Kenan

The fact of "existing in space", which is placed on the basis of human existence and sense systems, shows its effect in various forms that compose language systems. Being in the space also requires the use of various attributes of the space in thought systems; accordingly, it causes the forms of expression to occur according to spatial characteristics and to be directly dependent on the space. This result, which brings together some kind of physics and metaphor systems, has many traces on languages. Six directions such as forward/backward, down/up and right/left in the horizontal, vertical and lateral dimensions of the space organize logical relations in many linguistic fields, from grammar and word derivations to different morphological and syntactic strategies in some language units. It is understood that most of the language forms identified in the modern and historical language periods are derived from the root forms related to the above directions and it shows some metaphorical and conceptual developments. These occur within the framework of some principles that can be described as the “the principle of directionality” in the literature. In this study, various forms that developed depending on the directionality and their conceptual relations in Old Turkic, the first written period in which the development of Turkic was followed from various aspects, will be evaluated. The results of the principle of directionality, which have been put forward based on various previous studies, will be discussed and the strategies of Turkic based on the principle of directionality will be examined theoretically.

Orta Asya Türk Cumhuriyetleri ile Türkiye Arasında Sosyal Güvence İş Birliklerinin Değerlendirilmesi

    Bulut, Mehmet

Non-Urbanization and Social Dynamics of Violence against Women

    Alacadağlı, Esmeray

Urbanization is a concept that defines the increase in the population living in cities in terms of demographics. In Turkey, the number of individuals living in urban areas increased continuously after the 1950s and reached around 93% as of today. However, urbanization also has economic and social dimensions. Because, rapidly increasing urbanization without sufficient infrastructure and demand generally leads to formation of cities with underlying unemployment, and the emergence of a social structure that is urbanized but not localized, ultimately not being able to integrate with the city. Generally, this social segment tries to survive by settling in the urban suburbs, consists largely of the masses who are not able earn their living with urban-jobs, and who ultimately cannot adopt urbanspecific behaviors, lifestyles and values. Hence, these masses try to survive in the city and with the dominant values of the places they came from, instead of integrating to the city culture, which leads to their alienation to city values, resulting alienation and potential tendencies towards violence due to increasing marginalization. This literature review-based study aims to provide solutions by analyzing the causes of the violence against women, which has recently been increased in our society, in the context of migration, urbanization and poverty phenomenon. Research results reveal the importance of nonurbanization and poverty, as being factors for violence against women.

Causality Relationship Between Government Stability and Trade Openness: The Case of Turkey

    Arı, Ari

International trade is very exposed to political risk and the existence of political risk components in a given market may cause problems in both export and import activities. Government instability is one of the political risk components that is related with trade openness. The paper examines the government stability-trade openness nexus for Turkey using Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) and VECM based Granger Causality test covering the period of 1984-2016. Results have shown that there is a unidirectional causality in the long run from trade openness to government stability. Because Turkey’s production of final goods usually is based on imports, an increase in exchange rate usually floats trade openness in favor of imports. This creates foreign trade deficit. Worsening economic conditions affects the government stability. Due to the unfavorable picture and economic crises in Turkey, the average duty time of the governments established between 1990-2003 was one year. Despite this, export-led growth and highest amount of foreign direct investment within three election periods starting from 2002, enabled the individuals to grasp the importance of stability in governance. During the 2010s, Turkey struggled with the foreign trade deficit, high inflation and unemployment rates brought about by the high exchange rate, and the deteriorating economic situation caused the ministers in the cabinet and even the presidential system to change. Thus, the study concluded that trade openness may affect the policy-relevant implications and create government instability for Turkey through changes in exchange rates and depreciation of Turkish lira.

Does the inclusion of women on the board add profit and value added to firms?

Ag, Aliriza; Yilmaz, Tuncer; Zengin, Yunus

Based on the idea that the majority of family companies and the dominance of patriarchy in the social structure in Turkey may reduce the effectiveness of female managers in company management, this study aims to examine the effect of female managers on firm performance in Borsa Istanbul (BIST) companies. We limited our study to 126 manufacturing companies that were continuously traded in the BIST in the 2010- 2017 periods. In general, the following results were obtained in the multiple regression analyzes. The ratio of women in the board of directors and the presence of at least 1 woman in the board of directors were not found to have a significant effect on performance criteria. While the effect of having 2 or more women in the board of directors on ROE and having 3 or more women on EVA/TA was significant, the effects on other performance criteria were not found to be significant.

Baku state university: the foundation adventure of the first european-style higher education institution of the east

    Sadık, Ramin

The Republic of Azerbaijan, which was founded on May 28, 1918 and lived for only twenty three months, took important steps in public education. Among these steps, nationalization of schools, the use of Azerbaijani Turkish in official correspondence, the invitation of instructors from the Ottoman Empire and the writing of new curriculum were the most significant. Apart from these, the decisive move of the government was opening of a European-style public university for the first time among Muslim states in the Eastern world. The intellectuals of the period who succeeded in opening a State University in Baku in November 1919 showed that they had a broad vision for education and development of the country. Therefore, the university was considered as an important gift to the people of Azerbaijan. In this study, the establishment process of Baku University is discussed. The historical adventure related to the process was explained by the fact that despite scarcity in financial resources, the lack of scientists and students, debates and controversies occurred. This paper deals with the nature of these debates regarding the university project in the Azerbaijan Parliament. The archival sources, articles in the press and research works were examined and the subject was discussed in an original and objective manner.

Master-Slave Realıtonshıp In Reşat Nuri Güntekin’s Novel ‘Kızılcık Dalları’

    Deveci, Mutlu; Aytaç, Aslıhan

The slavery, which was seen in many nations throughout the history of humanity, is a system in which the individuals, whose fundamental human rights and freedoms are seized, are reduced to an object position by entering into others service. In the slavery system that is contrary to human rights, an individual is forced to obtain his/her right to life by his/her labor and losses right to speak on his/her life. A master, taking a slave under his/her protection with the authority to rule and give orders, becomes the right-holder person over that slave. As the slavery system is a social structure that continued in the Ottoman Empire for centuries, it is one of the most subjected topics in novels. Considered one of the important writers of the Turkish novel of the Republican era in the history of literature, Reşat Nuri Güntekin does not neglect to reflect the social life with his observer identity while describing the physiological states of individuals in detail in his literary works based on narration. For this reason, he discusses the slavery system in his novel named ‘Kızılcık Dalları’ as a social problem. In that work, the master-slave relationship is discussed sophisticatedly with regard to social hierarchy. Being a slave-owning master is used as an element of vanity, but also turns into an indication of power. In ‘Kızılcık Dalları’, the conflict-based relationship between master and slave is used as the primary topic allowing to establish a dramatic action. In this respect, while Gülsüm, the main character of the novel, is the slave, Mrs. Nadide, the wife of Şekip Pasha, is the master. Therefore, Mrs. Nadide is the one dominating, governing and oppressing whereas Gülsüm is the one being dominated, governed and oppressed in the novel.
