Investigation of the relationship between apelin hormone response and some physiological parameters in enzootic bovine leukosis virus infected cattle

    Sait, A.; Bayraktar, B.; Korkmaz, S.; Genç, M.; Bayraktar, S.; Kotan, G. C.; Aydemir, S.; Takma, C.; Bülbül, A. S.; Aksakal, V

Apelin is a hormone with lymphangiogenesis potential, associated with tumor growth and lymph node metastasis, and is reported to stimulate tumor vascularization. This study aimed to investigate the response of the apelin hormone in cattle with and without Enzootic Bovine Leukosis (EBL) infection, based on physiological parameters such as breed, age, and body condition score (BCS). A total of 120 Simmental and Montafon cattle of varying ages (<2, 2-8, and >8) and BCS categories (<2, 3-3.5, and >= 4) were included in the study. Serum apelin hormone levels were measured using the ELISA technique in blood samples collected from the neck vein ( Vena jugularis) of the animals. The analysis of mean serum apelin (ng/mL) values revealed that, among EBL-positive cattle, the highest value was 2.77 ng/mL in Simmental cattle aged 2-8 years with a BCS of 3-3.5, while a value of 2.69 ng/mL was observed in Montafon cattle aged >8 years with a BCS of 3-3.5. For EBL-negative cattle, the highest mean serum apelin value was 2.24 ng/mL, recorded in Simmental cattle aged 2-8 years with a BCS of 3-3.5, whereas it was 1.45 ng/mL in Montafon cattle aged >8 years with the same BCS. In conclusion, this study demonstrated for the first time the effect of apelin hormone levels in cattle with or without EBL, depending on physiological parameters such as age, breed, and BCS. It is suggested that the apelin hormone, which is involved in neoplastic lymphocyte cell infiltration in the lymphoreticular tissues of cattle, and plays a role in regulating tumor growth in EBL, a malignant tumor disease, may contribute to eradication programs. Moreover, the evaluated parameters may prove valuable for disease prevention and control strategies.

Optimization of Ethanol Extraction Conditions From Sun-Dried Apricot and Prediction of Antioxidant, Phenolic, and Flavonoid Contents and Their Effects on HCT116 Cells Using Artificial Neural Networks

Topcu, Kubra Cinar; Gueven, Sara Altun; Cakir, Ozlem; Anlar, Pinar; Durul, Melekber Sulusoglu; Ay, Mizgin; Alyafei, Mohammed; Hayat, Faisal; Ercisli, Sezai

This study aimed to optimize the ethanol extraction conditions of sun-dried apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.) and evaluate the antioxidant capacity, phenolic, and flavonoid contents of the obtained extracts. Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to determine the optimal extraction conditions, which were identified as 60 degrees C temperature, 34% ultrasonic power, 46 min sonication time, and a 4 g/mL solid-liquid ratio. Under these conditions, the extract exhibited a total phenolic content (TPC) of 4.20 mg GAE/g, a total flavonoid content (TFC) of 7.09 mg QE/g, a DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging capacity of 1.37 mg TE/g, a ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) value of 9.12 mg TE/g, and a thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) level of 1.69 mg MDA/g. The artificial neural network (ANN) model provided highly accurate predictions for these parameters. Additionally, cell culture experiments demonstrated that the extract exerted a dose-dependent cytotoxic effect on HCT116 colon cancer cells, significantly reducing their viability. These findings highlight the potential of sun-dried apricot extracts as natural antioxidants with possible applications in the functional food and pharmaceutical industries.

Tailoring the Electron Density of Functional Groups for Controlled Charge Transfer in SWCNTs

Fiebor, Alphonse; Cinar, Mehmet; Amsalem, Patrick; Achazi, Andreas J.; Gordeev, Georgy; Bartonitz, Florian; Xin, Fan; Koch, Norbert; Adeli, Mohsen; Paulus, Beate

Controlling the position of the Fermi level at the single-particle level in bulk amount of carbon nanotubes is a key technological bottleneck against their use in building nanodevices for electronics, optics, sensing, bioimaging, and beyond. Here are deployed a novel set of molecules built up from the same building blocks (aniline and methoxy groups attached on a triazine anchor) that efficiently p- and n-dope the nanotubes, depending upon the way they are assembled. Independent computational and experimental investigations consistently confirm the tunability-by-assembly concept of the charge transfer agents. The changes of the electronic density localized on the anchor groups and, upon attachment, the consistent variation of the position of the Fermi level in single-walled carbon nanotubes are monitored. The induced shifts reach several hundreds of meV, ranging from p-doping up to n-doping. This is evidenced by changes in the electronic and vibrational behavior of the nanotubes, as observed by Raman, photoelectron, and photoluminescence spectroscopies.

Imam Maturidi and his wiev on philosophical movements

    Sedat Bulut

Abū Mansūr Muhammad b. Muhammad b. Mahmud, better known as Imam Maturīdī, was an Islamic scholar born in Samarkand. Although little is known about his life, Imam Maturīdī's works and ideas have left a deep mark on Islamic thought. Considered as the founder of the Maturidīdī school, Imam Maturīdī focused especially on the sciences of theology and jurisprudence, and developed a methodology that combines reason and nakli. Imam Maturīdī's "Kitab al-Tawhid" and "Ta'wīl al-Qur'an" are known for their depth and methodological approach in Islamic sciences. These works deal with the issues in the science of theology and theology with rational and transplanted evidence and bring a new perspective to Islamic thought. Imam Maturīdī also made significant contributions to Islamic law and the sciences of tafsir, and left a great impact on Islamic scholars of his time and later. Maturīdī's ideas are especially important in his treatment of the relationship between reason and revelation. Instead of seeing reason and revelation as a source of conflict, he argued that the two could complement each other in understanding the Islamic faith. This approach inspired later Islamic thinkers and Imam Maturīdī's thoughts played a central role in shaping Islamic thought. He criticized the Dehriye, who defended the eternity of the universe, denied creation from nothing and explained the universe only by natural causes, the Sümeniye, who claimed that the Earth was in a constant decline and shared the views of the Dehris on the eternal formation of objects, and the Seneviye, who claimed that the universe consisted of two basic beings, one light and the other darkness, and who accepted the concept of two Gods, claiming that goodness came from light and all kinds of evil came from darkness, and proved the universe, the creator and the purpose of creation from his own theological perspective with traditional and rational evidence.

Seismic behavior assessment of RC buildings controlled by passive and active techniques

    Uyar, Mehmet; Ergün, Mustafa

In this paper, a numerical study was carried out on the effectiveness of the active earthquake control method in improving the earthquake response of RC buildings. High damping rubber bearing design was made according to the criteria of the Uniform Building Code. Three different types of isolators were obtained geometrically. Passive earthquake control of the building was provided by placing these isolators under the columns. For active earthquake control of the building, controller design was realized by integrating it into the FE transient analysis in ANSYS. The active earthquake control design was studied using a force-based and displacement-based controller with acceleration and displacement feedback. The linear dynamic earthquake analysis in the time history of all three states of the building (un-controlled, passive, and active-controlled) was made using the acceleration record of the Seferihisar (İzmir) earthquake. When the results are examined, it is seen that the active earthquake control method provides almost all of the positive behavior expected from the passive earthquake control method. In addition, it eliminates some of the disadvantages of the passive earthquake control method.

Investigating the Relationship Between the Financial Conditions Index with Economic Growth and Net Capital Inflow: Causality Analysis for Türkiye

    Kuloğlu, Eşref; Akar, Nuri Çağrı

The global economic crisis, which had a devastating effect worldwide with the bankruptcy of Lehman Brother's investment bank in the United States of America in 2008, revealed that countries should indicate risks and take precautions accordingly. In this sense, the importance of the Financial Conditions Index (FCI), which was created by considering the monetary policy instruments of the country's central banks and various macroeconomic and financial variables as a whole, has also increased. FCI, the index that has taken place in the literature since the 1990s, with the growth of countries, has been investigated in empirical studies conducted after the global economic crisis. In this study, the related index is calculated using Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and the data generated is analyzed with growth and net capital inflow items. According to the results of the related analysis, while there is bidirectional causality between FCI and real gross domestic product (GDP) growth, one-way causality was found between FCI and net capital inflow. The index created accordingly is the Granger cause of the net capital inflow.

Green Supplier Assessment with Fuzzy Expert System Approach

    Teke, Çağatay

Today, reasons such as increasing pollution on a global extent and limited raw material resources are increasing the interest in green supply chain management (GSCM). GSCM includes the processes starting from the very beginning of the production process of a product, completing the production, delivering the product to the customer, and recycling the product at the end of its useful life. Its main purpose is to eliminate or minimize the damages caused to the environment in all of these processes. In order to achieve this goal, it has great importance to assess the suppliers, which are one of the most important components of the production process, in terms of becoming a green supplier. In this study, a fuzzy expert system model has been developed to assess the green suppliers based on green production technology, environmental management system, pollution control, product cost, quality, and lead time criteria. Mean Square Error (MSE) and coefficient of determination (R2) have been calculated to measure the performance of the developed model. These calculated values show that the green supplier assessment performance of the developed model is quite high.

Dınler, Burcu Seçkın; Sefaoğlu, Fırat; Gül, Volkan; Çetinkaya, Hatice; Koç, Fatma Nur

In the present study, to promote sustainable nano-farming, the apparent effects of different concentrations (0, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 ppm) of titanium dioxide nanoparticle (TiO2NPs) solutions on the germination percentage, index and duration of seeds belonging to Balcı, Dincer, Hasankendi, Koc, Olas, and Zirkon safflower varieties were investigated. Moreover, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to analyze TiO2NPs in germinated safflower varieties. Germination performance was TiO2NPs concentration and variety depended. It was determined that the seed samples displayed different responses to TiO2NPs concentrations; germination percentages were between 20.0±1.15 and 82.9±0.44%, germination durations were between 2.01±0.021 to 3.82±0.017 days, and germination indices were between 9.97±0.606 and 38.97±0.959. While the highest germination percentage (82.9±0.44%) was obtained from Dincer variety with 100 ppm TiO2NP pre-application, the lowest germination percentage (20.0±1.15% and 20.0±1.92%) was obtained from Balcı and Hasan Kendi varieties with 100 and 300 ppm TiO2NP pre-application. According to this result, although the highest germination percentage based on variety was obtained from the Dincer variety, the Balcı variety with the lowest germination percentage provided the most significant increase in the 200 ppm TiO2NPs application dose compared to the control. According to the germination percentage, it can be said that the most effective TiO2NPs application dose in Safflower varieties is 200 ppm. Further research on nanoparticles is needed to determine both the economical doses of TiO2NP pre-application and its uptake by the plant.

Investigating the relations between coffee prices and the growth of selected coffee exporting countries

    Kuloğlu, Eşref; Akar, Nuri Çağrı

Coffee, one of the most important commodities traded in the world, is mainly grown in Latin America and Africa under certain altitudes and climatic conditions. In this study, causality relationships between world coffee prices and GDPs of four coffee producer countries, two from Latin America (Brazil and Colombia) and two from Africa (Kenya and Ethiopia), were tested. Using the series from 1981-2021, the relationships were investigated empirically with Engle-Granger cointegration analysis, error correction model, and Toda-Yamamoto causality methods. According to the analysis, while unidirectional causality between GDP and world coffee price was found for Brazil, Colombia, and Kenya, there was no causality for Ethiopia. As a result of the Engle-Granger cointegration analysis, which tests the long-term relationship, a significant relationship has been found between GDP and coffee prices for all selected countries. According to the results of the error correction model results model that tests the short-term relationship, the relationship between GDP and world coffee price is obtained for Brazil and Colombia. However, such a relationship could not be found in Kenya and Ethiopia.

    Tayfur, Bilal; Kamiloğlu, Hakan Alper

Retaining structures play a crucial role in geotechnical engineering to support soil levels, prevent slope failure, and create flat surfaces for construction. Designing these structures involves optimizing internal and external stability while minimizing material usage and cost. This study focused on optimizing reinforced concrete cantilever retaining walls using the Teaching-Learning Based Optimization (TLBO) algorithm and an improved version (I-TLBO) with agents. In the context of the study, geometric-structural design variables, geotechnical -structural constraints, and optimization processes were examined. Minimizing weight and minimizing cost of the wall were the objectives considered in the cantilever retaining wall design process. The optimization results were compared with other algorithms in the literature, such as genetic algorithms, evolutionary strategies, and particle swarm optimization. The improved TLBO algorithm demonstrated superior performance, achieved lower design dimensions, and reduced costs. It provided more efficient solutions that pushed design constraints closer to their limits, resulting in a cost-effective and structurally sound cantilever retaining wall design. As a result of the study, the I-TLBO algorithm was found to be more cost and weight-effective than other methods in the optimization of cantilever retaining wall design.

Parkinson’s Disease Detection Via Machine Learning Using Data Splitting and Validation Methods

    Engin, Mustafa Alptekin

Parkinson’s disease (PD), a neurological disorder, negatively affects the lives of patients and their caregivers. PD, which is very difficult to diagnose early by examining the clinical characteristics of the person, can be diagnosed using voice recordings. However, the inconsistent performance results of the models obtained from the evaluation of voice recordings through machine learning techniques limit the usability of these models to aid in diagnosing physicians. This study used a database of 195 voice data obtained from 31 individuals, 23 of whom have PD. The classification of the voices as healthy or patient was based on the 22 features in the database. The split ratios 90/10, 80/20, 70/30, 50/50 and 30/70 were used to select the training and test phase data, respectively. In addition, each split ratio was evaluated using 10-fold cross-validation, 5-fold cross-validation, holdout validation and resubstitution validation methods in the training phase, which is the initial process that will directly affect the other classification procedures. In addition, the classification process was performed using quadratic discriminant analysis, support vector machine, ensemble bagged tree, k-nearest neighbours and neural network classifiers. All procedures were repeated 10 times to ensure consistency of results and randomisation of split ratios. As a result, the k-nearest neighbours classifier with 80/20 splitting ratio and 10-fold cross-validation was determined to be the most successful among the compared methods with 95.64±3.21% accuracy. Therefore, it can be seen that much more successful results can be obtained by analysing only the effects of the existing parameters of the classifiers.

Design, Manufacturing, and Comparative Analysis of a Mini Extruder for Polymer Flow Characterization: A Case Study on HDPE and PMMA Polymers

    Yilmaz, Galip; Uslu, Emin

Polymer extrusion is one of the most widely used polymer processing methods and the sole option for many standard products. The modern extrusion machine has a very sophisticated design; for example, the extrusion screw has different zones and complex geometry. Determining the proper processing settings is always a challenge for engineers. Additionally, complex rheological properties of the polymers in extrusion sometimes yield challenging and unpredictable problems to troubleshoot. For convenience, a small-scale extrusion machine can be used to troubleshoot and analyze the polymers rather than the large manufacturing machines that are hard to work with. This study has produced a small-scale extrusion machine that is easy to manufacture without deviating from the extrusion process's nature. The extruder, whose production details are given, was tested with two different polymers: HDPE and PMMA. The correct temperature and screw rotation speed were determined with the extruder for the proper process parameters. In addition, the temperature-viscosity relationship of the polymers' flow nature was also determined.

Investigation of The Effect of Molding Material Difference on Design in GGG70 Ductile Cast Iron Production

Colak, Murat; Keskin, Muhammet Emin; Durmuş, Melek; Şekerden, Mete

The casting process involves filling a prepared mould cavity with molten metal, which takes the shape of the container. While the liquid metal takes the shape of the container it is in, the method is attractive, while the volumetric changes during the liquid-solid transformation reveal the importance of moulding design for the manufacture of solid parts. Especially in cast irons, moulds with the same design may produce different results depending on the changing casting and foundry conditions because the volumetric change that occurs during the solidification of ductile cast irons is affected by many parameters and develops differently than in steel and aluminium castings. This study used model wet and resin molding materials to create single and double-riser moulding and castings with different section thicknesses. The importance of the type of mold material used in castings and the number of feeders for the robust production of the cast part was evaluated using experimental and modeling techniques. When the results were examined, it was seen that the shrinkage risk was lower with resin mould than with green sand moulding. In addition, depending on the riser connection point, the importance of the riser neck has emerged.
