Understanding the moderating role of gender in physical activity enjoyment and mental well-being: evidence from university students’ campus recreation participation

Karakullukcu, Omur Fatih; Ayhan, Cihan; Guder, Ferhat; Talaghir, Laurentiu-Gabriel; Cosoreanu, Dumitru Marius; Bentea, Cristina Corina

Background: Participation in physical activity is considered an important factor not only for individuals’ physical health but also for their psychological well-being. Developing physical activity habits, especially among university-aged individuals, plays a critical role in long-term health outcomes. In this context, the impact of physical activity enjoyment on individuals’ mental well-being has become a topic of interest. However, the moderating role of individual differences, particularly gender, in this relationship has not yet been sufficiently clarified. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between physical activity enjoyment and mental well-being among university students and to reveal the moderating effect of gender on this relationship. Method: The research was conducted using a relational screening model. The study group consisted of 392 university students (261 male and 131 female; mean age = 22.95 ± 2.58) from Sakarya University of Applied Sciences who participated in campus recreation activities. Data were collected via a face-to-face survey using the Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale and the Mental Well-being Scale. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis, and regression-based moderation analysis using PROCESS Macro Model 1 were used in the statistical analysis. Results: The level of enjoyment of physical activity was found to have a significant positive effect on mental well-being (r = 0.427, p = 0.001; F = 50.388, p < 0.001; R2 = 0.280). Moderation analysis further showed that gender significantly moderated this relationship (ΔR2 = 0.049; p < 0.001). The effect of enjoyment on mental well-being was significant for both males (β = 0.2693; S.E. = 0.0348; p < 0.001; 95% CI [0.2010, 0.3377]) and females (β = 0.7913; S.E. = 0.0949; p < 0.001; 95% CI [0.6047, 0.9780]), with the effect being stronger among females. Conclusion: The findings show that considering gender-sensitive approaches in physical activity programs to be implemented on university campuses has a potential impact on improving the psychological well-being of students.

Measuring the Effectiveness of Post-Earthquake Social Policies Using the Intuitionistic Fuzzy SIWEC Method: The Case of the February 6 Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes; [Sezgisel Bulanık SIWEC Yöntemi Kullanılarak Deprem Sonrası Sosyal Politikaların Etkinliğinin Ölçülmesi: 6 Şubat Kahramanmaraş Depremleri Örneği]

Keskin, Abdurrahman; Kara, Mehmet Akif; Keskin, Abdulkadir; Besoluk, Erdal

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of social policies implemented in the aftermath of the February 6, 2023, Kahramanmaraş earthquakes. The research employed the Intuitionistic Fuzzy SIWEC technique, a multi-criteria decision making method. Eight experts with substantial field experience evaluated seven main criteria and forty-four sub-criteria. The findings indicate that social policies—particularly in the "food and basic needs" category (covering clean drinking water, hygiene products, the food supply chain, food safety, and the provision of special nutritional needs) and, more broadly, policies within the "health and education services" category—have been implemented successfully. In contrast, under the "employment and social security" category, efforts to combat informality, provide vocational training, grant tax exemptions, and support SMEs were deemed inadequate. Similarly, within the "basic infrastructure and public services" category, notable deficiencies were identified in urban planning and construction, in ensuring transparency and fairness in public social policies, and in restoring telecommunication and internet infrastructure. In addition policies targeting vulnerable groups and psychosocial support services were found to be relatively neglected.

Parental acceptance of children with developmental disabilities in the preschool period: the role of mindfulness in parenting

Ari-Arat, Ceren; Cetinkaya, Elif; Oz, Koray

Objectives: Understanding the factors that influence parental acceptance during the preschool period when many children with developmental disabilities are diagnosed is crucial. Mindfulness in parenting is the intentional, nonjudgmental attention a person gives to their child and their parenting actions and is associated with processes of acceptance. This research examines the relationship between parental acceptance and mindfulness in parenting among parents of preschool children with developmental disabilities. Methods: The investigation included 120 parents of preschool-aged children (3–6 years) with developmental disabilities in Turkey. Results: The findings reveal that parental acceptance of children with developmental disabilities varies according to the father’s education level and the child’s age. A significant correlation was found between mindfulness in parenting and parental acceptance. Notably, mindfulness in parenting accounted for approximately 19.2% of the variance in parental acceptance of children with developmental disabilities (R2 = 0.192). Conclusions: The results underscore the importance of interventions aimed at enhancing mindfulness in parenting, particularly in supporting the acceptance processes during the preschool years. This is especially critical for younger children and for fathers with lower educational levels. The study also highlights the need for further research to deepen our understanding of the acceptance process.

The prebiotic potential of alternansucrase-based glucooligosaccharides: the effects on short-chain fatty acids production and microbiome diversity

Ozulku, Gorkem; Harris, Hannah C.; Savva, George M.; Ahn-Jarvis, Jennifer H.; İspirli, Hümeyra; Dertli, Enes; Warren, Frederick J.

Glucooligosaccharides (GLOS) produced by glucansucrases via acceptor reactions are oligosaccharides that transit upper intestinal tract and evade digestion and may be considered to be a prebiotic. The prebiotic function of GLOS can be dictated by the type of acceptor sugar used during its production. Therefore, the prebiotic effect on the gut microbiome and short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production can be used to inform the selection of acceptor sugars. In this study, alternansucrase-based GLOS derived from different acceptor sugars (melibiose, cellobiose and lactose) and inulin (positive control) were investigated using in vitro colon model fermentation to examine their prebiotic effect and SCFAs production. Microbiome composition was determined using shotgun metagenomics. SCFAs and lactate formation was determined using 1H NMR spectroscopy. Fusicatenibacter saccharivorans and Bacteroides uniformis appeared to increase in abundance after 24 h following fermentation of all three GLOS. The highest abundance for Bifidobacterium longum was seen after supplementation with lactose derived GLOS. Fermentation of GLOS appeared to produce around twice as much acetate than fermentation with inulin, while similar amounts of other SCFAs and lactate were produced. Melibiose derived GLOS supplementation in healthy 3 donors increased F. saccharivorans while inulin supplementation promoted Lactobacillales in order level. This study suggests that there may be beneficial effects of GLOS's on gut microbiome composition and metabolite composition, relative to the effects seen for inulin.

Optimization of surface modification parameters of fly ash with high calcium oxide (CaO) content to use as a filling material

Uçurum, Metin; Özdemir, Akın; Teke, Çağatay

Fly ash (FA) is the fine-grained waste product obtained by burning coal after being ground to specific sizes in thermal power plants, carried with flue gases, and kept in cyclones or electro-filters. Like every industrial waste, the possibilities of utilizing FA have been investigated, and it can be utilized as an additive in cement and concrete. Despite this, industrial waste, which increases daily in the world, brings many problems, especially environmental problems. For this reason, alternative usage areas of the waste in question are constantly being investigated. In this paper, FA containing approximately 50 % CaO from Afşin-Elbistan, Turkiye was processed with stearic acid in a planetary mill to be used as a filling material in industrial products, and it has a grain size of 68.10 μm on a d50 basis, a specific surface area (SSA) of 176.40 m2/g and a contact angle of 13.89. An optimization and characterization study was conducted to make the hydrophilic surface structure hydrophobic by mechanochemical surface modification. Also, surface modification parameters, such as operational speed (rpm), ball filling ratio (%), FA filling ratio (%), pulp density, stearic acid dosage (% of FA), and modification time (min.) were optimized with the D-optimal experimental design. Based on the optimum surface modification parameters, a coated fly ash (CFA) product was obtained with an active ratio of 99.70 %, a contact angle of 95.06o, a medium size (d50) size of 10.60 μm, and an SSA of 926.90 m2/g.

Lightweight ASIP Design for Lattice-Based Post-quantum Cryptography Algorithms

    Akçay, Latif; Yalçın, Berna Örs

Lattice-based cryptography (LBC) algorithms are considered suitable candidates for post-quantum cryptography (PQC), as they dominate the standardization process put forward by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Indeed, three of the four key encapsulation mechanism (KEM) algorithms in the third round of the process are based on computationally hard lattice problems. On the other hand, there is an urgent need for processor designs that can run PQC algorithms efficiently, especially for embedded systems. This study presents an application-specific instruction set processor (ASIP) design for the Kyber, Saber, and NewHope algorithms based on transport triggered architecture (TTA). Custom hardware accelerators are added to the baseline processor architecture for computation-intensive steps without applying any software optimization to the reference code. We compared FPGA and ASIC implementations of our design with the prominent RISC-V cores and instruction set extension studies in the literature. According to the results, the proposed design offers greater efficiency, better performance, and lower resource utilization than its competitors in most cases.

A psychometric analysis of the artificial intelligence skills scale developed through chat gpt

Görgülü, Deniz; Coşkun, Fatma; Demi̇r, Mustafa; Si̇pahi̇oğlu, Mete

This study aims to examine the psychometric properties of a scale developed to measure teachers’ ability to use artificial intelligence tools in education. The scale was originally proposed as having 33 items across 5 sub-dimensions by Chat GPT-4, an AI system. To establish content validity, the scale form was submitted to expert review. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was then conducted on a sample of 347 teachers to determine if the 33-item, 5-subdimensional structure proposed by Chat GPT was confirmed by empirical data. The EFA results supported Chat GPT-4’s proposed structure. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was applied to a new sample of 603 teachers to assess the scale’s validity in an independent sample. The CFA results did not fully support the structure consisting of 33 items and 5 subdimensions proposed by Chat GPT. Reliability was analyzed using Cronbach’s Alpha and test-retest methods.

Theoretical and experimental studies on a novel potential barrier control for a vehicle model and piezoelectric smart structure

    Uyar, M.

A novel control methodology, inspired by the quantum mechanical phenomenon of particle-wave duality, wherein particles and waves utilize their energy to traverse potential barriers, has been proposed. This control strategy is investigated both numerically and experimentally to mitigate undesirable vibrations in a three-degree-of-freedom vehicle system and a smart beam structure. The mathematical framework for the vehicle system is derived using Lagrange’s equations, while the experimental setup is designed for the smart beam. Disturbance inputs in the form of step and sinusoidal road profiles are introduced into the vehicle model to simulate real-world conditions. For the smart beam, endpoint vibrations are induced as an initial value problem by releasing the beam’s endpoint from a predefined initial displacement. In order to achieve vibration suppression, control signals, parameterized based on system-specific frequency and period characteristics, are applied to both systems. The optimal control parameters are determined by evaluating the vibration damping performance. The findings of this study demonstrate that the proposed control strategy is not only effectively applicable to the experimental validation of the piezoelectric smart structure but also holds significant potential for numerical integration into mechanical systems, such as vehicle dynamics models.

Preservice teachers’ attitudes toward pedagogical humour: the role of physical activity, sociodemographic factors, and academic discipline

Çakır, Zekai; Çatıkkaş, Fatih; Türkmen, Mutlu; Şengönül, Abdullah; Yaman, Menzure Sibel; Öktem, Tuncay; Gönen, Mevlüt; Güzel, Sema; Yel, Kader

Background: Humour in educational contexts is not merely an element of entertainment but a powerful pedagogical tool that reduces anxiety, enhances motivation, strengthens classroom climate, and facilitates learning. While affiliative and anxiety-reducing functions of humour foster social bonds, it is well documented that hostile or aggressive humour can undermine students’ self-concept. For this reason, humour must be employed with careful consideration in pedagogical settings. Although recent research has increasingly examined the associations between humour, psychological resilience, cognitive flexibility, and social interaction, studies evaluating preservice teachers’ humour attitudes concerning lifestyle factors (e.g., physical activity) and socio-demographic variables remain limited. The present study seeks to address this gap by situating the multidimensional nature of humour at the intersection of pedagogy, lifestyle, and cultural context. Methods: The study, conducted within a cross-sectional survey design, included 766 preservice teachers (397 male, 369 female) enrolled at various universities in Turkey during the 2023–2024 academic year. Participants were classified as physically active or inactive based on WHO and ACSM criteria. The Attitude Scale Toward the Use of Humour in Education (ASTUHE) was employed as the data collection instrument. The scale consists of 17 items grouped into three subscales: PHNE (Perceiving Humour as Necessary in Education), ELI (Effect on Language and Instruction), and CCM (Contribution to Classroom Management). In Balta’s (2016) original study, internal consistency was reported as α = 0.89, whereas in the present research, internal consistency was α = 0.887. For the analyses, independent-samples t-tests, one-way ANOVA, and post-hoc tests (LSD, Tukey HSD, Bonferroni) were conducted, with effect sizes (Cohen’s d, η², ηp²) also reported. Results: Preservice teachers generally evaluated humour as a positive element in education. Students who engaged in regular physical activity reported significantly higher attitude scores than their inactive peers (M = 3.51 vs. 2.86; p <.001, d = 0.62). Female students exhibited more favourable attitudes than males (p <.05, d = 0.61–0.98). Likewise, students involved in team sports demonstrated significantly higher scores than those engaged in individual sports (p <.001, d = 0.60–0.96). Differences were also observed across academic discipline, class level, family humour climate, income level, and place of upbringing (p <.05, ηp² = 0.015–0.027). In particular, students raised in urban centres evaluated the functions of humour in education more positively, likely due to their exposure to broader cultural and social stimuli. These findings underscore that humour is not merely a pedagogical skill but a multidimensional phenomenon shaped by lifestyle, social environment, and cultural factors. Conclusions: Regarding contribution to the literature, the study illuminates the relationship between humour and lifestyle factors, while simultaneously revealing the multilayered structure of humour through the combined examination of diverse socio-demographic variables. Moreover, the positive (affiliative, supportive) and negative (sarcastic, aggressive) aspects of humour are contextualised and discussed in light of the literature. Although the cross-sectional design and reliance on self-report data limit causal inference, the findings suggest that preservice teachers’ humour awareness and the availability of physical activity opportunities in university settings may enhance pedagogical skills and psychosocial resilience. Future longitudinal and experimental research could more clearly elucidate the causal mechanisms linking humour and lifestyle factors.

    Erkılıç, T. Orkun; Bayraktar, B.

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different amounts of jackfruit pulp extract (JPE) in the diets on serum nesfatin-1 and visfatin levels in Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced Type 1 diabetic rats. Methods: In this study, 64 adult male Wistar albino rats, aged between 8-10 weeks, were used. 8 groups were created, with 8 rats in each group: Control (C), J100 (JPE 100 mg/kg group given with oral gavage route of administration (OGRA), J200 (JPE 200 mg/kg group given with OGRA), J300 (JPE 300 mg/kg group given with OGRA); STZ 55 mg/kg i.p administered group, DJ100 (D+100 mg/kg JPE), DJ200 (D + 200 mg/kg JPE), DJ300 (D). + 300 mg/kg JPE). The study lasted a total of 31 days, including adaptation (7 days), induction of diabetes (3 days) and trial period (21 days). Blood samples were taken from the tail vein (Vena caudalis) of all subjects on days 0 and 21 of the study. Nesfatin-1 and visfatin levels in the serum samples were measured by ELISA method. Result: As a result, in the diabetes groups of our study, the most significant increase in the mean serum nesfatin-1 level and the most significant decrease in the mean serum visfatin level occurred in the DJ200 groups at the end of the 21st day due to the addition of JPE (p<0.05). As a result, it was concluded that JPE may be safe and beneficial when administered at a dose of 200 mg/kg in diabetic groups.

Bee bread from Anatolia: its chemical composition, phenolic and aromatic profiles, and antioxidant properties

Kolayli, Sevgi; Okumus Yukunc, Gulsah; Kara, Yakup; Demir Kanbur, Esra; Can, Zehra; Ozkok, Aslı; Tanugur Samanci, Aslı Elif

This study investigated the botanical origin, chemical composition, phenolic and volatile aromatic profiles, and antioxidant activities of 11 bee bread samples from different regions of Anatolia, Turkey. The bee bread samples contained high amounts of proteins (19.61 g/100 g) and lipids (6.43 g/100 g). The bee breads were determined to have a rich mineral content. The antioxidant potential of the bee breads was predicted using total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), total condensed tannin (TCT) content, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. The TPC of the bee breads ranged between 2.041 ± 0.170 and 3.224 ± 0.006 mg GAE/g, while the TFC ranged from 0.323 ± 0.004 to 1.903 ± 0.017 mg QE/g. The FRAP assay showed antioxidant activity ranging from 17.778 ± 0.207 to 49.752 ± 0.856 µmol FeSO4.7H2O/g, and the DPPH values were between 1.054 ± 0.009 and 4.366 ± 0.014 SC50 mg/mL. Using 25 standards, RP-HPLC-PDA quantified the composition of the phenolic compounds, attributed to their antioxidant activity. The highest concentrations were detected for t-cinnamic acid, rutin, and p-coumaric acid. One hundred nineteen volatile aromatic compounds were determined in the bee breads by solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (SPME-GC-MS). The obtained values suggest that bee breads could serve as a potential source of nutrients and bioactive compounds for value-added food supplements and functional foods.

RETRACTED: Algorithmic management and reflexive ethnography: methodological innovations for practice-theoretical observation

    Tutar, Hasan; Battal, Fetullah

Purpose – This study aims to reveal the alternative methodological possibilities offered by reflexive ethnography in this field, where classical observation techniques are inadequate, by conducting a sociological analysis of algorithmic management systems that have become widespread on digital platforms. Design/methodology/approach – In the research conducted with reflexive ethnography, which is a qualitative method, the researcher’s own experience, position and impact on the observation process are placed at the center of data production. This approach offers a more flexible and multi-layered analysis framework in digital environments shaped by variables and algorithms that replace fixed observation areas. Findings – Algorithmic management constantly controls the workforce with opaque decision processes. This situation creates behavioral orientations that are difficult to capture with classical ethnography. Reflexive ethnography provides a more holistic observation by including the researcher’s intuitive, technical and experiential data in understanding these systems’ internal logic. Research limitations/implications – Reflexive ethnography offers a strong methodological basis that is flexible enough to not only understand today’s governance systems but also to analyze the digital institutions of the future. Originality/value – Regarding future ethnographic research, reflexive ethnography has the potential to address not only algorithmic systems but also the effects of these systems on users, performance evaluation methods and the construction of affect and self. The interdisciplinary collaborations of this method with informatics, media studies, sociology and anthropology will provide methodological depth and analytical diversity. Furthermore, combining with other approaches such as cyber-ethnography, shadow ethnography and autoethnography, it can open up new research paths to understand the multi-layered structure of digital platforms. Thus, reflexive ethnography offers a strong methodological basis that is flexible enough to not only understand today’s governance systems but also to analyze the digital institutions of the future.

A Systematic Review On Psychological Capital And Psychological Well-Being (1993-2023)

    Battal, Fetullah

In the literature, many studies have been conducted on the terms of psychological capital and psychological well-being over the last thirty years. However, it has been observed that the interest in these concepts has increased today. Most of the studies have been obtained at the relational level or with quantitative methods. However, the number of studies in which the constructs of psychological capital and psychological wellbeing are examined systematically or qualitatively is quite limited. In this research, a systematic mapping was made for the relevant concepts using R and Rstudio programs together, with the help of data obtained from Wos. In this way, potential researchers will be capable of seeing the conditions of the relationship between psychological capital and psychological well-being in the last thirty years and will be able to have deeper and clearer information about the levels of related concepts. When we look at the most emphasised key concepts based on the analysis, it is sighted that keywords such as leadership, social capital, old age, hedonic wellbeing and good mood are at the forefront. When looking at niche areas of study, keywords such as climate change, adaptation, migration and innovation emerge. In other words, scientists doing research in the branches of administration and organisational or non-clinical psychology should look at graphs containing motor or basic concepts, if they want to do a deeper investigation and understand the subject in general. Based on these data, although the terms psychological capital and well-being are thought to be in the context of affirmative psychology, their relationship with the concepts that are popularly described as dark behaviours is also examined. By offering a systematic examination and guidance for the future, the data of the study adds something unique to the literature.

Investigation of the Effect of Vanadium Addition on Mechanical Properties in A356 Aluminum Casting Alloys

    Çeker, Merve; Çolak, Murat

The superior properties of aluminum alloys are further improved by the addition of different elements and gain new qualities. In the aluminum casting industry, vanadium (V) addition plays an important role to improve the mechanical and physical properties of these alloys. In this study, different amounts of V (0.03%, 0.06% and 0.1%) were added to A356 alloy, and its effects on mechanical properties and microstructure were investigated experimentally. The liquid metal degassing process was applied in all experiments in order not to affect the results of gases and inclusions in the liquid metal before casting. In the study, degassing was assessed by the Reduced Pressure Test (RPT). Tensile and hardness test specimens were performed with specimens obtained from mechanical test molds. When the results were examined, the elongation amount, which was 2.7% in A356 casting without addition, increased with the addition of V and reached a maximum value of 7.6% with 0.1% V addition. Tensile stress values were 137 MPa in A356 castings without addition, 159 MPa with 0.03% V addition, 168 MPa with 0.06% V addition and increased up to 185 MPa with 0.1% V addition.

A Promising Antibacterial Inhibition of Propolis Extracts Against Carbapenem-Resistant Bacteria Isolated From Clinical Samples

Esertaş, Ülkü Zeynep; Inal, Neşe; Can, Zehra; Kolaylı, Sevgi

The increasing inadequacy of antibiotics against multidrug-resistant pathogens is a growing concern. In this study, the antibacterial activity of propolis extracts with different phenolic profiles against carbapenem-resistant clinical isolates was investigated. The antimicrobial activity of propolis extract was tested against Acinetobacter baumannii (K17, K16, and K21), Klebsiella pneumoniae (K22, and K19), and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (E5, E7, and E4) bacterial strains isolated from tracheal aspirate and blood cultures. The total phenolic content and phenolic composition of the extracts were analyzed. Antimicrobial activity values examined according to the disk diffusion method were measured as minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). The results showed that all propolis extracts showed different inhibition values against bacterial strains. As a result, the high inhibitory potential of the propolis extracts against resistant bacteria such as A. baumannii, K. pneumoniae, and S. maltophilia is promising for combating infections. However, the study needs to be supported by further randomized clinical studies.

Moderated Mediation in Problematic Digital Gaming Among Adolescents: Self-Esteem, Social Anxiety, Self-Concealment, and Sensation Seeking

Yayla, İbrahim Erdoğan; Makas, Samet; Koçak, Lokman; Yıldırım, Murat; Dombak, Kübra

Background: Problematic digital gaming among adolescents is a common behavioral issue that has negative consequences on school functioning and mental health. Theoretically, it is predicted that low self-esteem paves the way for problematic gaming by increasing social anxiety and self-concealment; this indirect pathway may be stronger in sensation seeking adolescents. Aims: The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between self-esteem and problematic digital gaming among adolescents, first through the PROCESS Model 6 in terms of social anxiety and self-concealment as mediators, and subsequently through Model 89 in terms of moderated mediation by sensation seeking. Method: The sample consisted of 448 Turkish adolescents (243 (54.2%) males, 205 (45.8%) females) aged between 13 and 18 years (M = 15.9). Participants completed the Game Addiction Scale for Adolescents—Short Form, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Self-Concealment Scale, Brief Sensation Seeking Scale and the Social Anxiety Scale-8. Results: A significant negative relationship was found between self-esteem and problematic digital gaming. Social anxiety and self-concealment fully mediated this relationship (indirect effects were significant). Sensation seeking conditioned the mediation by strengthening pathways to problematic digital gaming (moderated mediation was significant). The indirect effect was greater in those with high sensation seeking. Conclusions: The findings indicate that the negative effect, ranging from self-esteem to problematic digital gaming, progresses through social anxiety and self-concealment, and that this mediation is strengthened in adolescents with high sensation seeking. These results emphasize the need to integrate social anxiety reduction and self-expression skills into interventions in a target-sensitive manner, taking into account differences in sensation seeking.

EFFECT OF ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD DERIVED FROM ELECTRIC FENCE SYSTEM ON SPERM ACTIVITIES OF HONEYBEES (Apis mellifera L.); [Elektrikli Çit Sistemi Tarafından Oluşturulan Elektromanyetik Alanın Bal Arılarının (Apis mellifera L.) Sperm Aktivitesine Etkisi]

    Erdoğan, Yaşar

This study investigated the effects of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) from electric fence systems on physiological and reproductive parameters of male honeybees (Apis mellifera caucasica). The study was conducted between May and August 2024 at the Bayburt University Beekeeping Application and Research Center, with five experimental groups. Hives were positioned at varying distances (1–2.5 m) from the fence. The findings showed that the average body weight (245.4 mg), sexual maturity rate (58.56%), and sperm concentration (0.87 ± 0.04 × 10 ⁶/μL) of drones closest to the electric fence were significantly reduced (p < 0.05). The electric field effect was limited in groups at greater distances, with statistically insignificant differences in some parameters. No significant differences were found between groups in sperm volume. Results demonstrate that electric fields from fence systems suppress developmental processes and reproductive physiology of drones in a distance-dependent manner. Lower body weight, decreased sperm concentration, and proportion of mature males in colonies near the fence show electromagnetic stress is a significant risk for bee health. Future studies should examine the effects of electromagnetic fields at different frequencies and strengths on larval development, sperm morphology, oxidative stress markers, and gene expression profiles.

Demirgül, Furkan; Kaya, Halil İbrahim; Ucar, Redife Aslıhan; Mitaf, Naciye Afranur; Şimşek, Ömer

Bacteriocins, ribosomally synthesized by bacteria, have long been recognized for their role in ensuring food safety and security due to their antibacterial effects against foodborne pathogens and spoilage bacteria. However, recent advancements have unveiled their expanding potential beyond food applications, with increasing evidence of their efficacy against clinically significant pathogenic bacteria, biofilm formation, viral infections, and even cancer. These emerging discoveries have continuously added new layers to the application of bacteriocins, extending their relevance from food preservation to broader human health interventions. To further harness this expanding potential, various innovative strategies have been developed to overcome traditional limitations associated with bacteriocin use. Instead of directly employing bacteriocins or bacteriocin-producing bacterial cultures, novel approaches, such as incorporating them into films and packaging materials or coupling them with nanoparticles, have demonstrated enhanced effectiveness. In this review, we examine the evolving landscape of bacteriocin applications and shed light on the expanding functional spectrum of bacteriocins for both food safety and human health, although some important challenges and limitations remain. By analyzing the recent literature and innovative technological advancements, we highlight how bacteriocins are continuously evolving, opening new frontiers for their use and reinforcing their significance beyond their conventional roles.

Factors affecting the sustainability of open educational resource initiatives in higher education: A systematic review

Aksoy, Dilara Arzugül; Kurşun, Engin; Zawacki-Richter, Olaf

This systematic review aims to examine the factors that impact the sustainability of open educational resources (OER) initiatives. A total of 226 articles from the Web of Science, ERIC and SCOPUS databases were subjected to content analysis to identify factors that influence the sustainability of OER initiatives based on the 3M (macro, meso and micro) framework. Our findings reveal that OER sustainability is influenced by different factors in different contexts, such as platform, content creator, learner, learning material and institutional setting. Within the institutional context, institutional policies categorised as a macro and meso factor, were identified as the most frequently mentioned factor affecting OER sustainability. The factors of providing institutional support and incentives were identified as meso factors. For faculty and learners, meso and micro factors such as attitude, motivation, awareness of OER, time, ICT needs and digital literacy were frequently mentioned. Access emerged as a prominent meso factor within the OER platforms dimension. Quality was identified as a critical macro and meso factor for the sustainability of OER. After the quality factor, material-related factors such as licensing, interactivity and free access emerged. Finally, an OER sustainability framework is proposed along with recommendations for researchers, practitioners and administrators to promote sustainable OER practices.

The Effects of Essential Oils from Coriander Seed, Tarragon and Orange Peel on Lipid Production by Yarrowia lipolytica Strains

Yılmaz, Özlem; Kaban, Güzin; Kaya, Mükerrem

The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of different concentrations (0.15, 0.30, and 0.45 mL/L) of essential oils from coriander seeds (Coriandrum sativum), tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus), and orange peels (Citrus sinensis) on biomass, lipid content, and lipid yield of the strains Yarrowia lipolytica Y-1094, Y. lipolytica YB 423, and Y. lipolytica IFP29. The fatty acid composition of the oils produced by the strains was also determined. The highest biomass (5.38 ± 1.80 g/L) and lipid production (0.98 ± 0.42 g/L) were observed in the presence of Y. lipolytica IFP29 and Y. lipolytica YB 423, respectively. The lipid yield showed the highest value at the level of 0.45 mL/L in the presence of the Y. lipolytica Y-1094 strain. The correlation heat map results indicate that 0.45 mL of tarragon affected biomass and lipid content more than the other essential oils used. Y. lipolytica Y-1094 produced higher levels in terms of myristic acid and palmitic acid in all three essential oil sources than the other strains. The highest oleic acid level of all strains was determined in coriander seed essential oil, and the lowest in tarragon essential oil. The oleic acid level of Y. lipolytica Y-1094 was lower than that of the other two strains in all essential oils. Regarding linoleic acid, the oil level did not have a significant effect in the presence of tarragon and orange peel.
