- MakaleAçık Erişim2016Scopus SJRQ1An experimental study on the ultra-fine grinding of gypsum ore in a dry ball mill
Öksüzoğlu, Bilge; Uçurum, Metin
Gypsum is a crystalline form of hydrated calcium sulfate (CaSO4·2H20) generally used in cements and plasters in the construction industry, though also in paints, fertilizers, medicines, papers, and textiles. For use in these materials, gypsum must be ground finely (<100 μm), if not ultra-finely (<10 μm), for which ball mills are most effective. Despite gypsum's widespread use and the regular need to grind it, studies concerning the grinding of gypsum ore remain scarce. In response, in this study, we have systematically investigated how certain grinding parameters (i.e., mill speed, ball filling ratio, ball size distribution, powder filling ratio, grinding aid ratio, and grinding time) of conventional dry ball mills affect the grindability of gypsum ore. We determined the properties of the micronized gypsum products obtained in optimal grinding conditions, and the results showed that the dry ball mill grinding process can effectively produce ultra-fine gypsum products.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2016Scopus SJRQ1Fuzzy multicriteria decision making method based on the improved accuracy function for interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy sets
Şahin, Rıdvan
A new accuracy function for the theory of interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy set, which overcomes some difficulties arising in the existing methods for determining rank of interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy numbers, is proposed by taking into account the hesitancy degree of interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy sets. By comparing it with several proposed accuracy functions, the necessity and efficiency of our accuracy function are provided by giving related examples. A fuzzy multicriteria decision making method is established to select the best alternative in multicriteria decision making process which is taken as interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy set of criterion values for alternatives. While aggregating the interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy information corresponding to each alternative, we utilize the interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy weighted aggregation operators. Then the accuracy degree of the aggregated interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy information is computed via the new proposed accuracy function. Thus, we can rank all the alternatives according to the accuracy function and choose the optimal one(s). Finally, an illustrative example is given to demonstrate the practicality and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Zirek, Duygu; Celebi, Fusun; Kabir Hassan, M.
In this paper, we investigate the impact of Islamic banking variables on economic growth in a panel setting for 14 member countries of the Organization of Islamic Countries during 1999-2011 period. We examine the short-run effects as well as long-run effects by employing the Panel VAR method. We find a positive and significant relationship between Islamic finance and economic growth. This relationship is robust with regard to several macroeconomic control variables such as capital stock, unemployment, inflation, and government expenditure. We show that an increase in the share of Islamic deposits, assets, and loans in total banking instruments results in an increase in economic growth. The results also show that in the long run, economic growth responds positively to shocks in Islamic instruments, namely Islamic deposits, investments, and size. Shocks in Islamic banking contribute to more than 3% of the forecast error in economic growth in the next 10 year period.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2016Scopus SJRQ2Effect of external magnetic field on the Kβ/Kα X-ray intensity ratios of TixNi1-x alloys excited by 59.54 and 22.69 keV photons
Perişanoğlu, Ufuk; Alım, Bünyamin; Uğurlu, Mine; Demir, Lütfü
The effects of external magnetic field and exciting photon energies on the Kβ/Kα X-ray intensity ratios of various alloy compositions of Ti-Ni transition metal alloys have been investigated in this work using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. The spectrum of characteristic K-X-ray photons from pure Ti, pure Ni and TixNi1-x (x=0.30; 0.40; 0.50; 0.60; 0.70) alloys were detected with a high resolution Si (Li) solid-state detector. Firstly, Kβ/Kα X-ray intensity ratios of pure Ti, pure Ni and TixNi1-x alloys were measured following excitation by 59.54 keV γ-rays from a 200 mCi 241Am radioactive point source without any magnetic field and under 0.5 and 1 T external magnetic fields, separately. Later, the same measurements were repeated under the same experimental conditions for 22.69 keV X-rays from a 370 MBq109Cd radioactive point source. The results obtained for Kβ/Kα X-ray intensity ratios of pure Ti, pure Ni, Ti and Ni in various Ti-Ni alloys were evaluated in terms of both external magnetic field effect and exciting photon energy effect. When the results obtained for both exciting photon energies are evaluated in terms of changing of Kβ/Kα X-ray intensity ratios depending on the alloy composition, the tendency of these changes are observed to be similar. Also, Kβ/Kα X-ray intensity ratios for all samples examined have changed with increasing external magnetic field. Therefore, the results obtained have shown that Kβ/Kα X-ray intensity ratios of Ti and Ni in TixNi1−x alloys are connected with the external magnetic field. The present study makes it possible to perform reliable interpretation of experimental Kβ/Kα X-ray intensity ratios for Ti, Ni and TixNi1−x alloys and can also provide quantitative information about the changes of the Kβ/Kα X-ray intensity ratios of these metals with alloy composition.

Özen, Soner; Şenay, Volkan; Pat, Suat; Korkmaz, Şadan; Akkus, B.; Dogan, G.S.; Mutlu, R.B.C.; Yalcin, L.S.; Oktem, Y.
This study discusses the influence of working pressure on the surface energy of the ITO thin films produced by radio frequency magnetron sputtering method. Optical tensiometer (Attension Theta Lite) is used for evaluating wetting behavior of the water droplet on the film surface and Equation of State method was selected to determine surface free energy for this study. Equation of state method does not divide the surface tension into different components such as polar, dispersive, acid-base. It is calculated the surfaces' free energy measuring the contact angle with a single liquid. The surface free energy value was in the range of 15-31 mN/m. Also, the transmittances were determined in the wavelength range between 200 and 1000 nm using the UNICO 4802 UV-Vis double beam spectrophotometer. Transmittances of the produced ITO thin films are greater than %70 in the visible range.

Karaali, R.
Ammonia-water power cycles are important for efficient utilization of low temperature heat sources such as geothermal, solar, waste heat sources, etc. For some special conditions ammonia-water power cycle is an important and economical option. This paper presents an exergetic analysis of a combined power and cooling cycle that uses ammonia-water mixture as working fluid. Such cycles, use solar or geothermal energy or waste heat energy from a conventional power cycle. Ammonia-water power cycle can be used as independent cycles to provide power output and cooling. For a range (25-55 Bar) of boiler pressure the performance of the combined power and cooling cycle is investigated. The exergy of the boiler is very low compared to its energy. There is a boiling process and a heat transfer process at low temperature, both of which destruct the energy given to the boiler, so that the energy efficiency is low; however the exergy efficiency is higher than the energy efficiency. Increasing the turbine inlet pressure decreases the energy and exergy efficiencies.

Başar, Şule; Karaoğlu, M. Murat; Boz, Hüseyin
The effects of Cephalaria syriaca flour on the quality of sunn pest-damaged wheat were investigated. Sunn pest-damaged wheat was blended into sound wheat at different levels (5, 10 and 15%). C. syriaca flour was then added at 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5% levels. The rheological properties of sunn pest-damaged wheat flour with added C. syriaca flour were considerably improved, in particular with regard to farinograph characteristics (dough stability, mixing tolerance index [MTI] and degree of softening [DS]) and instrumental textural properties (area and maximum resistance) compared to control. The dough stability value increased significantly (P<0.01) as C. syriaca flour level increased for all sunn pest-damaged wheat levels. The addition of sunn pest-damaged wheat at 15% level greatly increased the MTI and DS values of dough (202.5 and 282.5 BU); however, the addition of 1.5% C. syriaca to this blend significantly decreased these values (87 and 94.5 BU; P<0.01).

- MakaleAçık Erişim2016Scopus SJRQ2Effect of laser irradiation on activation energy, irreversibility field and upper critical magnetic field of bulk MgB2 superconductor
Erdem, O.; Yanmaz, E.
In this study, the role of laser irradiation on the upper critical field (Hc2), the irreversibility field (Hirr) and the activation energy (U0) of bulk MgB2 superconductor was first time investigated with the aid of magnetoresistivity measurements conducted at different applied magnetic fields in a range of 0–15 kOe as a function of temperature from 25 to 40 K. For this aim, a disk shaped MgB2 superconductor was produced and cut into two pieces. One of the pieces was irradiated under high vacuum conditions by using an Nd:YVO4 laser. The obtained results showed an increase in the critical temperature (Tc) by about 1 K after irradiation. Also, the values of Hc2(0) were respectively found to be around 143 and 151 kOe while the values of Hirr(0) were about 122 and 130 kOe for the reference and the irradiated samples. Using the thermally activated flux flow model the dependence of U0 on magnetic field was determined. The maximum U0 values of 0.43 and 0.83 eV in zero magnetic field were respectively obtained for the reference and the irradiated samples. Also, the magnetic field dependence of the critical current density Jc(B) values at different temperatures were slightly increased after the irradiation. These results point out that the superconducting properties of bulk MgB2 can be improved via laser irradiation.

Artar, Musa
A Harmony Search (HS) and Genetic Algorithms (GA), two powerful metaheuristic search techniques, are used for minimum weight designs of different truss structures by selecting suitable profile sections from a specified list taken from American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). A computer program is coded in MATLAB interacting with SAP2000-OAPI to obtain solution of design problems. The stress constraints according to AISC-ASD (Allowable Stress Design) and displacement constraints are considered for optimum designs. Three different truss structures such as bridge, dome and tower structures taken from literature are designed and the results are compared with the ones available in literature. The results obtained from the solutions for truss structures show that optimum designs by these techniques are very similar to the literature results and HS method usually provides more economical solutions in multi-element truss problems.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2016Scopus SJRQ1A novel roof type heat recovery panel for low-carbon buildings: An experimental investigation
Cuce, Pinar Mert; Cuce, Erdem; Riffat, Saffa
Energy saving and its efficient utilization is of prime interest in today's world due to the limited energy resources and growing significance of environmental issues. Despite the intensive efforts to narrow the gap between conventional energy sources (wood, coal, gas, oil, etc.) and renewables, renewable energy resources currently supply only about 14% of total world energy demand. In this regard, energy management and optimization are considered compulsory as much as the clean energy generation. Recent works indicate that the buildings play a significant role on global energy consumption. They are responsible for about 40% of global energy demand. Among the different building types, domestic buildings have the largest share with 63% and most of energy is utilized for heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in those buildings. Energy consumption levels of buildings can be notably reduced through waste heat recovery in HVAC systems. There are several attempts in literature addressing the possibility of decreasing energy consumption of buildings via waste heat recovery technologies. The heat recovery technologies are cost effective and user friendly applications. The use of heat recovery systems aims at mitigating the energy consumption for HVAC applications as well as the greenhouse gas emissions, and hence decreasing the adverse effects of global warming on the Earth. It is well-documented in literature that the heat recovery systems are very promising for domestic applications. In this paper, experimental results of a novel heat recovery system developed for low-carbon buildings are presented. The proposed heat recovery system consists of a plate-type heat exchanger, blower fans and ducts. The parallel-flow arrangement is used to run the system. The system is designed as under roof application. The aim of the system is to recover waste heat and to preheat fresh air using stale air. The experiments of the system are carried out in winter season in Kent, UK. The study aims to investigate the coefficient of performance (COP) of the system as well as the heat recovery efficiency. The results show that the heat recovery efficiency of the proposed system is around 89% while the COP is 4.5. The proposed system can be used in both winter and summer conditions without requiring additional work. Its labor cost is extremely low, so it is cost-effective and user friendly.

A rose hip is the fruit of a rose plant and mostly belongs to Rosa canina and Rosa dumalis. These species are genuine found as wild in natural conditions, while in some countries are cultivated for their hips that are picked and used in a wide variety of preparations. Because they contain a variety of antioxidants, carotenoids, flavonoids, polyphenols, leucoanthocyanins and catechins, rose hips are considered to be a good cancer preventative. The Rosa genus has been the focus of many recent studies due to its potential benefic effects on treatment and prevention of several diseases. However, there are few in vitro studies concerning its composition and antioxidant capacity. The aim of the present study was to determine bioactive content, including ascorbic acid, total phenolics, total flavonoids, total carotenoids and antioxidant activity of Rosa dumalis genotypes growing wild in Erzurum province located eastern Anatolia. The results revealed that fruits of Rosa dumalis different genotypes were rich rich in terms of vitamin C, which ranged from 402 to 511 mg/100 g fresh weight base. The total phenolic content varied from 297 to 403 mg/100 g fresh weight. The genotype 'E-09' had the highest total flavonoids content (229 mg quercetin equivalent/100 g fresh weight) and the lowest value was attributed to genotype 'E-04' with 143 mg/ quercetin equivalent/100 g fresh weight. The antioxidant activity of the genotypes was between 12.9-28.6 μg Trolox/ml samples. The results revealed that there was enough diversity among Rosa dumalis genotypes for bioactive content and promising genotypes, with high bioactive content, were determined, which can become study material for future breeding activities.

- Derleme MakaleYalnız künye2016Nasreddin Hodja tales may inspire Turkish foreign language gifted and talented students to speak better English
Yurtbaşi, Metin
This study deals with a special methodology to meet the special needs of Turkish gifted and talented students (GTS) in terms of improving their English oral proficiency. Most GTS are known to have been born also "gifted in languages". Their language awareness shows by their "communicative skills, creative flair and arguing and reasoning". Their skill in using their native language reflect in their talents in foreign languages by their "strong desire to put language pieces together by themselves, by their creativity and imagination, picking up new words and structures very quickly, constantly asking questions and showing an intense interest in the cultural features of the new language they are learning." So benefitting from these talents they could easily be oriented to fine-tune their pronunciation and intonation in acceptable norms of phonetics. Turkish GTS having greater ease in learning new skills than their peers and are not usually satisfied with the usual methods and curriculum which do not fit to their vision of perfection at their own pace. The official foreign language training they are offered lacks the method by which they can learn to speak clearly and effectively, which is a skill they need to acquire in order to communicate orally with the rest of the world. Therefore they must be trained in new approaches to bring their proficiency on that line up to higher standards. In order to compensate this vital gap, such GTS need to learn first a special technique called "IPA transcription reading" and practice on relevant materials. In this innovative approach, students first acquire an awareness of the individual sounds and speech rhythm of the target language, i.e. English and practice on them by reading aloud texts written in IPA codes accompanied by their sound recordings and have their performance monitored by their speech instructions until perfection is reached. As for the drilling material to be chosen humor has been found great advantage, as it makes learning easier. The best known Turkish philosopher Nasreddin Hodja's satirical tales, traditionally a great source of inspiration for Turks, has been considered as a great source for such activities. By working hard on the transcriptions Hodja tales, students find not only to express themselves in English more clearly, understandably and fluently, their audience but also their conversation became wiser and more humourous. Because a sense of humor in conversation makes both speakers and listeners feel better as it smoothes out their interactions as a social lubricant. Those GTS grasping the correct norms of English pronunciation after much drilling on transcription are expected to speak English more efficiently and confidently than earlier and than their peers not undergone such training. The desired outcome will of course be achieved through constant practice and monitoring their performances.
