ANALYSIS OF A LONG STRIP CONTAINING AN INTERNAL OR EDGE CRACK USING FEM

Yaylaci, Murat; Birinci, Ahmet; Adiyaman, Gokhan; Öner, Erdal

This paper presents the elastostatic plane problem of a long strip containing an internal or edge crack perpendicular to its boundaries. The plane problem consists of an infinitely long strip of thickness h. The infinitely long strip is loaded by uniformly distributed load and rests on two simple supports. It is assumed that the effect of gravity is neglected. The finite element model of the problem is constituted using ANSYS software and the two dimensional analysis of the problem is carried out. Normalized stress-intensity factors for the cases with internal and edge crack, and normal stress (sigma(x)) for uncracked layer case are obtained for various dimensionless quantities. Finally, the results obtained from the finite element analysis are verified by comparing with analytical ones and it is seen that the results from finite element analysis indicate a good agreement with the analytical solution.

Pat, Suat; Korkmaz, Sadan; Özen, Soner; Senay, Volkan

This study reports the influence of the boron alloying on the structural and optical properties of GaAs compound for the first time. UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometer, interferometer, photoluminescence spectrophotometer, X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy tools were used for the determination of the structural and optical properties. As results, boron atoms affect the bang gap to upper energy level with very small variations. But, structural properties and grain dimensions of GaAs have improved by adding boron atoms. The results show that used method, thermionic vacuum arc, is the fast, direct, environmental and very easy-doped BGaAs ternary compounds deposition method according to other methods. Finally, this method is a promising method for GaAs technology.

Thermodynamic optimization of a zero CO2 emission cogeneration cycle

    Karaali, Rabi; Ozturk, Ilhan Tekin

CO2 emissions that have the greatest negative impact on the greenhouse and the global warming that should be decreased or kept at the same rates. Today fossil fuels share 60 % of total electricity production of the world, which plays an important role on CO2 emissions. Thermal cogeneration and zero CO2 emission cycles have potential for reducing this effect. By taking into consideration the most applicable and important zero CO2 emission cycles, a new cycle is designed. Thermodynamic analyses and optimization of this cycle is studied with FORTRAN code. The optimization results of this cycle show that the maximum exergy efficiency of this new cycle is 64 %, which is 17.6 % higher than (0,544) the one for the air preheated cogeneration cycle (APHCC) and 18.7 % higher than (53,9) the absorption cooling zero CO2 emission cycle (ACZEC). In the introduced new cycle, steam and CO2 in the exhaust gases are condensed so that the condensing energy of them is regained. For that reason, the heat output and the electrical power of the introduced cycle is better than the other cogeneration cycles.

Experimental determination of Drucker-Prager yield criterion parameters for normal and high strength concretes under triaxial compression

Öztekin, Ertekin; Pul, Selim; Hüsem, Metin

In this study, parameters which define Drucker-Prager yield criterion were investigated experimentally for both normal strength concrete (NSC) and high strength concrete (HSC) by triaxial compression tests. Total 16 concrete series with different concrete strength were produced. While 8 concrete series were produced as NSC (20 MPa < fcm < 55 MPa), other 8 series were produced as HSC (55 MPa < fcm < 85 MPa). Each series contains 16 specimens. Triaxial compression tests were performed on these concrete specimens. Concrete compressive strength of the specimens were measured under 4 different lateral compression level (0, 1, 2 and 4 MPa). After Mohr circles were drawn by using the data obtained from triaxial compression tests, the values of cohesion were determined between 5 MPa and 13 MPa for NSC and 13 MPa and 19 MPa for HSC. The values of internal friction angle were also obtained between 27° and 34° for NSC, 34° and 39° for HSC from the Mohr circles. The parameters defining the Drucker-Prager yield criterion were determined by using the values of cohesion and internal friction angle. Finally, after some equations were proposed to calculate the parameters by using concrete compressive strength, the validation of these equations were also proved in this study.

Improvement in performance properties of asphalt using a novel boron-containing additive

    Oruç, Şeref; Yılmaz, Bahadır

In current times, many additives are used to improve the performance characteristics of asphalt. In this study, a new additive that contains boron, given the short name of cyclic borate ester (CBE), was chemically synthesised in laboratory conditions. It was added to the asphalt binder as 1%, 2%, 4% and 6% ratios of asphalt by weight, and modified asphalt samples were produced. The effects of CBE on the conventional properties of asphalt binder (penetration, softening point, ductility, flash point, Fraass breaking point) were examined using a dynamic shear rheometer, rotational viscosity, a rolling thin film oven, a pressure aging vessel and bending beam rheometer test methods. Results showed that the use of CBE additive increased the hardness, softening point, viscosity, flash-point value and rutting resistance of asphalt binder and decreased temperature sensitivity. CBE also enhanced elastic responses (increased complex shear modulus and decreased phase angle), aging resistance and low-temperature cracking resistance and did not change the cohesion property.

Maximizing deviation method for neutrosophic multiple attribute decision making with incomplete weight information

    Şahin, Rıdvan; Liu, Peide

This paper develops a method for solving the multiple attribute decision-making problems with the single-valued neutrosophic information or interval neutrosophic information. We first propose two discrimination functions referred to as score function and accuracy function for ranking the neutrosophic numbers. An optimization model to determine the attribute weights that are partly known is established based on the maximizing deviation method. For the special situations where the information about attribute weights is completely unknown, we propose another optimization model. A practical and useful formula which can be used to determine the attribute weights is obtained by solving a proposed nonlinear optimization problem. To aggregate the neutrosophic information corresponding to each alternative, we utilize the neutrosophic weighted averaging operators which are the single-valued neutrosophic weighted averaging operator and the interval neutrosophic weighted averaging operator. Thus, we can determine the order of alternatives and choose the most desirable one(s) based on the score function and accuracy function. Finally, some illustrative examples are presented to verify the proposed approach and to present its effectiveness and practicality.

Correlation between the DNA methylation and gene expression of IGFBP5 in breast cancer

Karabulut, Sevgi; Kaya, Zehra; Amuran, Gökçe Gullu; Peker, Irem; Özmen, Tolga; Gulluolu, Bahadir M.; Kaya, Handan; Erzik, Can; Ozer, Ayşe; Akkiprik, Mustafa

BACKGROUND: The insulin-like growth factor binding protein5 (IGFBP5) is often dysregulated in human cancers and considered neither a tumor suppressor nor an oncogene. OBJECTIVE: We aim to examine the reason of the changeable gene regulation of IGFBP5 in the case of methylation in breast cancer. METHODS: We used methyl-specific polymerase (MSP) chain reaction to detect CpG methylation of IGFBP5 promoter and exon-I in breast cancer and adjacent tissues. Gene expression is evaluated by quantative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). RESULTS: IGFBP5 methylation was detected in 24 of 58 (41%) and 54 of 56 (96.5%) promoter and exon-I site respectively in tumor tissues. In adjacent tissues 17 of 58 (29%) and 53 of 56 (96.5%) was methylated. IGFBP5 expression was higher estrogene receptor (ER)(+) than ER(-) patients (p = 0:0549). Beside, we found a positive correlation between the expression of IGFBP5 and G2 tumor grade (p = 0:0131). However, no correlation was observed between IGFBP5 expression and age, menopause or the presence of lymph node metastasis (p > 0:05). CONCLUSIONS: In summary, our results showed that IGFBP5 promoter and exon-I methylation did not have any differences between tumor and adjacent tissues so that IGFBP5 methylation did not change IGFBP5 gene regulation in breast cancer. This is the first study investigating the IGFBP5 gene methylation in breast cancer.

Kosunalp, Selahattin; Chu, Yi; Mitchell, Paul D.; Grace, David; Clarke, Tim

This paper studies the potential of a novel approach to ensure more efficient and intelligent assignment of capacity through medium access control (MAC) in practical wireless sensor networks. Q-Learning is employed as an intelligent transmission strategy. We review the existing MAC protocols in the context of Q-learning. A recently-proposed, ALOHA and Q-Learning based MAC scheme, ALOHA-Q, is considered which improves the channel performance significantly with a key benefit of simplicity. Practical implementation issues of ALOHA-Q are studied. We demonstrate the performance of the ALOHA-Q through extensive simulations and evaluations in various testbeds. A new exploration/exploitation method is proposed to strengthen the merits of the ALOHA-Q against dynamic the channel and environment conditions.

EpsA is an essential gene in exopolysaccharide production in Lactobacillus johnsonii FI9785

Dertli, Enes; Mayer, Melinda J.; Colquhoun, Ian J.; Narbad, Arjan

Lactobacillus johnsonii FI9785 has an eps gene cluster which is required for the biosynthesis of homopolymeric exopolysaccharides (EPS)-1 and heteropolymeric EPS-2 as a capsular layer. The first gene of the cluster, epsA, is the putative transcriptional regulator. In this study we showed the crucial role of epsA in EPS biosynthesis by demonstrating that deletion of epsA resulted in complete loss of both EPS-1 and EPS-2 on the cell surface. Plasmid complementation of the epsA gene fully restored EPS production, as confirmed by transmission electron microscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis. Furthermore, this complementation resulted in a twofold increase in the expression levels of this gene, which almost doubled amounts of EPS production in comparison with the wild-type strain. Analysis of EPS by NMR showed an increased ratio of the heteropolysaccharide to homopolysaccharide in the complemented strain and allowed identification of the acetylated residue in EPS-2 as the (1,4)-linked βGlcp unit, with the acetyl group located at O-6. These findings indicate that epsA is a positive regulator of EPS production and that EPS production can be manipulated by altering its expression.

Optical, structural, morphological and compositional characterization of a Co-doped GaAs semiconducting thin film produced by thermionic vacuum arc

Şenay, Volkan; Özen, Soner; Pat, Suat; Korkmaz, Şadan

A 80 nm 2 at% Co-doped GaAs thin film was deposited on a glass substrate under a high vacuum condition by means of the thermionic vacuum arc technique using GaAs and Co pellets as source materials. Tools and techniques such as an optical reflectometer, XRD, UV-VIS-NIR spectrophotometer, FESEM, EDX, and AFM were employed to investigate some of the physical properties of the produced film. From the optical investigations, the refractive index at 632.8 nm and optical band gap of the film were determined to be 3.60 and 1.42 eV respectively. XRD characterization indicated that the film contained GaAs and Co phases. A uniform surface morphology with fine grain covering the entire surface was observed through the FESEM and AFM studies, while 30 nm grain size and 2.72 nm root mean square roughness were obtained. The EDX analysis also confirmed the presence of Ga, As and Co in the film.

Effect of natural aging on RT and HSR superplasticity of ultrafine grained Zn-22Al alloy

Demirtas, Muhammet; Purcek, Gencaga; Yanar, Harun; Zhang, Zhenjun; Zhang, Zhe-Feng; Sato, E.; Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, 3-1-1 Yoshinodai, Chuo, Sagamihara, Kanagawa, 252-5210; Itoh, G.; Kobayashi, J.; Department of Mechanical Engineering, Ibaraki University, 4-12-1 Nakanarusawa, Hitachi, 316-8511

Zn–22Al alloy was processed using a well-designed two-step equal channel angular extrusion/pressing (ECAE/P), and ultrafine-grained (UFG) microstructure with 200 nm grain size was achieved. UFG Zn-22Al was subjected to long-term (up to 60 days) aging at room temperature (RT) and it was seen that natural aging caused limited grain growth in the microstructure. Grain sizes of about 300 nm, 350 nm and 350 nm were measured after 15, 30 and 60 days aging, which mean that UFG Zn-22Al alloy has a good microstructural stability at RT up to 60 days. ECAPed Zn-22Al alloy showed a maximum elongation of about 400% at a high strain rate of 5×10-2 s-1 and maximum elongation decreased with increasing grain size. Elongation to failures of ~375% and ~350% were obtained with the samples having 300 nm and 350 nm grain sizes, respectively. In addition, natural aging slightly decreased the strain rate at which superplastic region formed. While the maximum elongation occurred at the strain rate of 5×10-2 s-1 in ECAPed UFG alloy, it took place at lower strain rate of 1×10-2 s-1 after aging for all time periods. Also, flow stress of the alloy increased with increasing grain size during natural aging.

Effects of milk somatic cell counts on some physicochemical and functional characteristics of skim and whole milk powders

Sert, Durmuş; Mercan, Emin; Aydemir, Serdar; Civelek, Mustafa

The aim of this work was to study the influence of milk somatic cell count (SCC) levels on spray-dried milk powders. For this reason, 3 cow milks with different SCC (<300,000, 300,000-700,000, >700,000 SCC/mL) were processed into skim (SMP) and whole milk powder (WMP). The effect of SCC on the physicochemical and functional characteristics of the milk powders and textural properties of set-type yogurts produced from reconstituted milk powders with different SCC was evaluated. A crucial difference was noted between milk powders depending on different SCC. Protein values and ash content of powder samples decreased correlatively with increasing SCC. The hydroxymethylfurfural content of SMP was higher than WMP. We noted an increase in hydroxymethylfurfural content of both SMP and WMP depending on elevated SCC. Solubility index of SMP and WMP was 1.280 to 1.632 and 0.940 to 1.208 mL, respectively; with increasing SCC, solubility index was affected adversely. The highest foam stability was determined in SMP containing >700,000 SCC. Bulk density of SMP and WMP was between 0.682 and 0.708 and 0.660 to 0.685 g/cm3, respectively. An increase was observed in scorched particle of both SMP and WMP depending on increasing SCC. We found significant differences in particle size distribution of milk powders produced from milk with SCC at different levels. Although WMP had more uniform and big particle structure, SMP had more specific area. A negative correlation was noted between yogurt texture and SCC. Results indicate that milk SCC has negative influences on milk powder quality.

Renewable energy status and hydropower in some developing countries and focus on Turkey

Yuksel, Ibrahim; Arman, Hasan; Serencam, Ugur; Songur, Mehmet; Demirel, I. Halil

The share of renewable energies varies quite a lot in the developing countries, both in terms of total primary energy and electricity generation. Several different policy instruments are in use for promoting renewable energies, such as quota obligations, price subsidies, and taxes/tax exemptions on energy. Some countries such as Turkey, also have specific political programs for renewable energies. The obstacles and success conditions mainly deal with geographical, economic, administrative and political factors. The Republic of Turkey forms a natural bridge between Europe and Asia and the country has a relatively young population in both Europe and Asia. Turkey aims to utilize its energy potential, including from renewable sources, in a cost-effective manner. In its efforts to promote renewable energy, the government has focused on electricity, but has recently started to pay more attention to heat. On the other hand, Turkey's geographical location has several advantages for extensive use of most of the renewable energy sources. In this regard, renewable energy resources appear the most efficient and effective solutions for clean and sustainable energy development in Turkey. In addition to Turkey has a great hydropower, especially small hydropower potential. This paper deals with Turkey's renewable energy status in developing countries.

Optical and surface properties of optically transparent Li3PO4 solid electrolyte layer for transparent solid batteries

Pat, Suat; Özen, Soner; Şenay, Volkan; Korkmaz, Şadan

In this study, optical and surface properties of the optically transparent Li3PO4 solid electrolyte layer for transparent solid battery have been investigated for the first time. To determine the optical properties, transmittance, absorbance, reflection, refractive index spectra, and optical band gap were determined by UV-Vis spectrophotometer and optical interferometer. The surface property of the transparent Li3PO4 solid electrolyte was analyzed using atomic force microscopy. One another important parameter is contact angle (CA) surface free energy (SFE). CA and SFE were determined by optical tensiometer. These values probably are a most important parameter for polymer and hybrid battery performance. For the best performance, value of CA should be low. As a result, solid electrolyte layer is a highly transparent and it has a high wettability. SCANNING 38:317–321, 2016.

Optimization of strength, ductility and electrical conductivity of Cu-Cr-Zr alloy by combining multi-route ECAP and aging

    Purcek, G.; Yanar, H.; Demirtas, M.; Alemdag, Y.; Shangina, D.V.; Dobatkin, S.V.

Properties of Cu-Cr-Zr alloy with ultrafine-grained (UFG) structure produced by equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) via different routes have been investigated. Special attention was paid to the optimization of multi-functional structural, thermal, electrical and mechanical properties of the alloy by aging of UFG one. Multi-pass ECAP via different routes gives rise to the formation of a deformation-induced submicrocrystalline structure with the grain (subgrain) sizes in the range of 200-300. nm depending on applied routes which leads to high hardness and strength in the Cu-Cr-Zr alloy with reduced ductility. Amongst the applied routes, route-Bc was found to be the best processing path for achieving the lowest grain size, the highest hardness and strength. Aging of 8Bc-processed UFG samples increases the hardness and strength of Cu-Cr-Zr alloy while retaining an electrical conductivity comparable to that of aged coarse-grained (CG) one. A satisfactory electrical conductivity of 71%IACS without considerable loss of peak hardness was achieved after aging of 8Bc-processed UFG alloy at 425. °C for 240. min. The precipitation strengthened UFG alloy remains its stable behavior at elevated temperatures up to 450. °C.

A receding contact problem between a functionally graded layer and two homogeneous quarter planes

Adıyaman, Gökhan; Birinci, Ahmet; Öner, Erdal; Yaylacı, Murat

In this paper, the plane problem of a frictionless receding contact between an elastic functionally graded layer and two homogeneous quarter planes is considered when the graded layer is pressed against the quarter planes. The top of the layer is subjected to normal tractions over a finite segment. The graded layer is modeled as a non-homogeneous medium with a constant Poisson’s ratio and exponentially varying shear modules. The problem is converted into the solution of a Cauchy-type singular integral equation in which the contact pressure and the receding contact half-length are the unknowns using integral transforms. The singular integral equation is solved numerically using Gauss–Jacobi integration. The corresponding receding contact half-length that satisfies the global equilibrium condition is obtained using an iterative procedure. The effect of the material non-homogeneity parameter on the contact pressure and on the length of the receding contact is investigated.

ANN based investigations of reliabilities of the models for concrete under triaxial compression

    Öztekin, Ertekin

Purpose - A lot of triaxial compressive models for different concrete types and different concrete strength classes were proposed to be used in structural analyses. The existence of so many models creates conflicts and confusions during the selection of the models. In this study, reliability analyses were carried out to prevent such conflicts and confusions and to determine the most reliable model for normal- and high-strength concrete (NSC and HSC) under combined triaxial compressions. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach - An analytical model was proposed to estimate the strength of NSC and HSC under different triaxial loadings. After verifying the validity of the model by making comparisons with the models in the literature, reliabilities of all models were investigated. The Monte Carlo simulation method was used in the reliability studies. Artificial experimental data required for the Monte Carlo simulation method were generated by using artificial neural networks. Findings - The validity of the proposed model was verified. Reliability indexes of triaxial compressive models were obtained for the limit states, different concrete strengths and different lateral compressions. Finally, the reliability indexes were tabulated to be able to choose the best model for NSC and HSC under different triaxial compressions. Research limitations/implications - Concrete compressive strength and lateral compression were taken as variables in the model. Practical implications - The reliability indexes were tabulated to be able to choose the best model for NSC and HSC under different triaxial compressions. Originality/value - A new analytical model was proposed to estimate the strength of NSC and HSC under different triaxial loadings. Reliability indexes of triaxial compressive models were obtained for the limit states, different concrete strengths and different lateral compressions. Artificial experimental data were obtained by using artificial neural networks. Four different artificial neural networks were developed to generate artificial experimental data. They can also be used in the estimations of the strength of NSC and HSC under different triaxial loadings.
