- MakaleYalnız künye2017Scopus SJRQ1Cross-entropy measure on interval neutrosophic sets and its applications in multicriteria decision making
Şahin, Rıdvan
The neutrosophic set model is an important tool for dealing with real scientific and engineering applications because it can handle not only incomplete information but also the inconsistent information and indeterminate information which exist commonly in real situations. In this paper, we firstly propose two practical techniques converting an interval neutrosophic set into a fuzzy set and a single-valued neutrosophic set, respectively. Then, we define the interval neutrosophic cross-entropy in two different ways, which are based on extension of fuzzy cross-entropy and single-valued neutrosophic cross-entropy. Additionally, two multicriteria decision-making methods using the interval neutrosophic cross-entropy between an alternative and the ideal alternative are developed in order to determine the order of the alternatives and choose most preferred one(s). Finally, an illustrative example is presented to verify the proposed methods and to demonstrate their effectiveness and practicality.

Background: Both insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 7 (IGFBP7) and telomere length (TL) are associated with proliferation and senescence of human breast cancer. This study assessed the clinical significance of both TL and IGFBP7 methylation status in breast cancer tissues compared with adjacent normal tissues. We also investigated whether IGFBP7 methylation status could be affecting TL. Methods: Telomere length was measured by quantitative PCR to compare tumors with their adjacent normal tissues. The IGFBP7 promoter methylation status was evaluated by methylation-specific PCR and its expression levels were determined by western blotting. Results: Telomeres were shorter in tumor tissues compared to controls (P<.0001). The mean TL was higher in breast cancer with invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC; n=72; P=.014) compared with other histological type (n=29), and TL in IDC with HER2 negative (n=53; P=.017) was higher than TL in IDC with HER2 positive (n=19). However, telomeres were shortened in advanced stages and growing tumors. IGFBP7 methylation was observed in 90% of tumor tissues and 59% of controls (P=.0002). Its frequency was significantly higher in IDC compared with invasive mixed carcinoma (IMC; P=.002) and it was not correlated either with protein expression or the other clinicopathological parameters. Conclusion: These results suggest that IGFBP7 promoter methylation and shorter TL in tumor compared with adjacent tissues may be predictive biomarkers for breast cancer. Telomere maintenance may be indicative of IDC and IDC with HER2 (−) of breast cancer. Further studies with larger number of cases are necessary to verify this association.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2017Examining social and sociomathematical norms in different classroom microcultures: Mathematics teacher education perspective
Güven, N. Dilşad; Dede, Yüksel
Each classroom has its own microculture with its own norms that belong to this microculture. It is these norms that characterize every kind of activity and discussion in the classroom. What makes a mathematics classroom different from any other classroom is the nature of norms, rather than their existence or absence. This study aims to identify the social and sociomathematical norms that belong to different mathematics learning environments within this framework as a multiple-case study based on the qualitative design. The data has been collected through observations of two different classrooms in a mathematics teacher education program at a state university in Turkey. The constant comparative method was used for data analysis. This study, with prospective teachers as participants, identifies the social and sociomathematical norms that regulate the classroom microcultures. The findings show how norms with different qualities can be established and sustained in two different courses within the same teacher training program, and their possible effects on learning and teaching are discussed in the context of teacher education.

- MakaleYalnız künye2017Scopus SJRQ1Noniterative complex permittivity retrieval using calibration-independent waveguide measurements
Hasar, Ugur Cem; Kaya, Yunus
Calibration-independent nonresonant measurements can be employed to eliminate the need for calibration before microwave measurements. These methods generally assume that the location of the sample in its measurement cell is known after the sample is positioned or shifted within the cell and that the length of the measurement cell is known. In addition, in general these methods necessitate some sort of numerical analysis to retrieve the complex permittivity of the sample. In this research paper, we propose a calibration-independent nonresonant waveguide method to first eliminate measurement errors arising from inaccurate knowledge of the location of the sample within its cell (after shifting) and arising from improper knowledge of the length of the measurement cell and second to determine the complex permittivity explicitly. In addition, our proposed method needs scattering parameter measurements from three different measurement configurations – another improvement with respect to a similar calibration-independent method requiring measurements from four different configurations. Furthermore, it does not necessitate that the sample be flushed to the measurement cell. We analyzed repeatability of cell connection and investigated uncertainty in the measurement of complex permittivity for a change in length of the sample and the cell and when air gap present between sample surfaces and guide walls. We validated the proposed method by measuring the complex permittivity of polyethylene sample and distilled water at X-band (8.2–12.4 GHz).

- MakaleYalnız künye2017Scopus SJRQ1Characterization of lactic acid bacteria from yogurt-like product fermented with pine cone and determination of their role on physicochemical, textural and microbiological properties of product
Sert, Durmuş; Mercan, Emin; Dertli, Enes
The aim of this study was to understand how pine cone (PC) addition could acidify the milk and result in the production of yogurt. For this purpose, yogurts were produced with three different pine cones which were classified according to collection period; PC-1 (October), PC-2 (November) and PC-3 (December). Physicochemical, textural and microbiological properties were determined as quality criteria on the yogurt samples. Importantly, Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) were isolated and identified from yogurt samples. 26 of 80 yogurt isolates were identified. The incubation time of yogurts until the pH reached 4.6–4.7 was ∼3.5–4 h at 45 °C. Textural properties of yogurt PC-3 increased as compared to PC-1 and PC-2 which was found to be related with high LAB numbers in PC-3. Similarly, the highest dry matter, water holding capacity, acidity values were determined in the yogurt PC-3 whereas PC-1 had the lowest values. The lowest pH value was found in yogurt PC-3 related to LAB counts. Lactobacillus spp. and Streptococcus spp. counts of yogurts ranged between 5.95-6.82 and 6.32–6.99 log cfu/g, respectively. Also, LAB species were identified as Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus plantarum in all yogurt samples showing that pine cones somehow harbour the yogurt starters.

Balci, Murat; Gundogdu, Omer
In this study, estimation of some physical properties of a laminated composite plate was conducted via the inverse vibration problem. Laminated composite plate was modelled and simulated to obtain vibration responses for different length-to-thickness ratio in ANSYS. Furthermore, a numerical finite element model was developed for the laminated composite utilizing the Kirchhoff plate theory and programmed in MATLAB for simulations. Optimizing the difference between these two vibration responses, inverse vibration problem was solved to obtain some of the physical properties of the laminated composite using genetic algorithms. The estimated parameters are compared with the theoretical results, and a very good correspondence was observed.

- MakaleYalnız künye2017Scopus SJRQ2Optimum design of steel bridges including corrosion effect using TLBO
Artar, Musa; Catar, Recep; Daloglu, Ayse T.
This study presents optimum design of plane steel bridges considering corrosion effect by using teaching-learning based optimization (TLBO) method. Optimum solutions of three different bridge problems are linearly carried out including and excluding corrosion effect. The member cross sections are selected from a pre-specified list of 128 W profiles taken from American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). A computer program is coded in MATLAB to carry out optimum design interacting with SAP2000 using OAPI (Open Application Programming Interface). The stress constraints are incorporated as indicated in AISC Allowable Stress Design (ASD) specifications and also displacement constraints are applied in optimum design. The results obtained from analysis show that the corrosion effect on steel profile surfaces causes a crucial increase on the minimum steel weight of bridges. Moreover, the results show that the method proposed is applicable and robust to reach the destination even for complex problems.

- MakaleYalnız künye2017Scopus SJRQ1Characterization of functional properties of Enterococcus spp. isolated from Turkish white cheese
İspirli, Hümeyra; Demirbaş, Fatmanur; Dertli, Enes
Enterococcus species was isolated from Turkish white cheese and genotypic characterization of these isolates revealed the presence of 12 distinct strains belonging to 5 different species: Enterococcus faecium, E. faecalis, E. durans, E. gallinarum and E. italicus. All strains showed good survival ability under bile salt conditions. The antibiotic resistance of these strains was low but two strains showed high levels of resistance including resistance to vancomycin. PCR detection of virulence determinant in these isolates revealed that cheese isolate enterococci contained virulence genes common in gut and food originated enterococci and importantly two strains harboured cylB gene related to cytolysin metabolism. No complete hemolytic activity was observed for Enterococcus strains but partial hemolytic activity was observed 8 out of 12 strains. Additionally, all strains showed important levels of antimicrobial activity against food-borne pathogens and PCR screening of genes encoding enterocin A and B indicated the presence of enterocin B gene in all tested strains. The antimicrobial activities of the tested strains were lost after proteolytic enzyme treatments but no alteration was observed at different pHs and after heat treatments. In summary, this study reflected characteristics of Enterococcus strains presented in Turkish white cheese in terms of functional and safety perspectives.

In this paper, Zn/ZnSe thin films were deposited on glass substrates by RF magnetron sputtering system. XRD analyses were done. Zn and ZnSe phases were obtained. Miller indices of obtained Zn phases were detected in (320), (620) and (112) crystal formation. For the ZnSe phases, only one peak of (110)/(220) was observed. The surface morphology of the samples was investigated by an atomic force microscopy tools. It found that average roughness of the films was increased by raised RF power. The thin films around 80 % of high transmittance were measured. The band gap values were calculated as to be ~2.80 eV by the Cauchy model. The calculated refractive indices values were approximately 2.25 by a relation between the refractive index and the band gap.

Uğurlu, Mine; Alım, Bünyamin; Han, İbrahim; Demir, Lütfü
Kβ-to-Kα X-ray intensity ratios of Fe, Ni, Co, Ti, V in pure form and PERMENDUR49 (Fe49Co49V2), KOVAR (Fe54Ni29Co17) and Ti50Co50 alloys were calculated in order to determine valence-electron structure of the samples. The obtained experimental Kβ-to-Kα X-ray intensity ratios were found to be 0.1252 ± 0.0025, 0.1256 ± 0.0027, 0.1298 ± 0.0026, 0.1327 ± 0.0028, 0.1346 ± 0.0027 for pure Ti, V, Fe, Co and Ni, respectively. These values of present pure metals have increased with the increment in atomic number of these pure metals. Also, although the obtained these values for metal atoms in PERMENDUR49, Ti50Co50 and for Fe, Ni metal atoms in KOVAR approximately compatible with respect to results same pure metals, the obtained experimental Kβ-to-Kα X-ray intensity ratios for Co in KOVAR are significantly different from the appropriate values for pure Co metal. Then, the valence-electron populations of these alloys were calculated in order to answer as to why the characteristic properties of the studied alloys are distinct from each other. The valence-electron structures of these metals in pure form and alloys were determined by comparison of the calculated Kβ-to-Kα X-ray intensity ratios with the results of multi-configurations Dirac-Fock (MCDF) calculations to understand the charge-transfer and/or delocalization phenomena of these alloys. The experimental n3d values were found to be 3.2694, 4.7905, 7.7941, 7.9618, 8.500 for pure Ti, V, Fe, Co and Ni, respectively. The calculated 3d and 4s, 4p electron population values for Ti, V and Co in pure form have shown very little deviation from the appropriate values of Ti in Ti50Co50 and Co, V in PERMENDUR49. Also, the deviation for these values is greater for Fe, Ni, in KOVAR, Co in Ti50Co50, Fe in PERMENDUR49 with respect to the corresponding values of pure metals and the largest deviation for these values is observed for Co metal atoms in KOVAR alloy. We have also calculated the weighted average numbers of 3d and 4s, 4p electrons per one atom as well as the superposition of 3d and 4s, 4p electrons, as obtained from pure metal values. While the obtained superposition 3d electron numbers of present alloys exhibit a decreasing tendency as S3d(Ti50Co50) < S3d(PERMENDUR49) < S3d(KOVAR), the obtained weighted average 3d electron numbers of present alloys has opposite tendency (A3d(KOVAR) < A3d(PERMENDUR49) < A3d(Ti50Co50)). The analysis show that valance-electron population of elements in these alloys indicated differences with respect to the pure metal and each other. These differences can be related to type of alloy elements, concentration of alloy elements, charge transfer and/or delocalization phenomena between of individual metal atoms in alloys. Also, the obtained results show that there are alloying effect on valence-electron population due to charge transfer and/or delocalization phenomena.

- MakaleYalnız künye2017Scopus SJRQ1Continuous and discontinuous contact problem of a functionally graded layer resting on a rigid foundation
Adıyaman, Gökhan; Öner, Erdal; Birinci, Ahmet
In this study, the continuous and discontinuous contact problem of a functionally graded (FG) layer resting on a rigid foundation is considered. The top of the FG layer is subjected to normal tractions over a finite segment. The graded layer is modeled as a non-homogenous medium with a constant Poissons’ ratio and exponentially varying shear modules and density. For continuous contact, the problem was solved analytically using plane elasticity and integral transform techniques. The critical load that causes first separation and contact pressures is investigated for various material properties and loadings. The problem reduced to a singular integral equation using plane elasticity and integral transform techniques in case of discontinuous contact. The obtained singular integral equation is solved numerically using Gauss–Jacobi integral formulation, and an iterative scheme is employed to obtain the correct separation distance. The separation distance and contact pressures between the FG layer and the foundation are analyzed for various material properties and loading. The results are shown in Tables and Figures. It is seen that decreasing stiffness and density at the top of the layer result in an increment in both critical load in case of continuous contact and separation distance in case of discontinuous contact.

- MakaleYalnız künye2017Scopus SJRQ1Role of airtightness in energy loss from windows: Experimental results from in-situ tests
Cuce, Erdem
The rate of air leakage related energy loss from glazed areas is unequivocal especially in older and poorly installed windows. Therefore, in this research, a comprehensive experimental investigation is done to analyse the importance of air leakage on overall heat transfer coefficient (U-value) of conventional air filled double glazed windows. The tests are conducted in a typical UK dwelling of Nottingham fitted with traditional air filled double glazed windows. One sash of the test window is sealed internally with a special transparent cover to provide excellent airtightness whereas the second window sash is left as it is to represent the ordinary case. The experiments are conducted in April 2016, and dynamic co-heating test methodology is applied to evaluate the rate of enhancement in the U-value of airtight window sash. The results indicate that the airtight window sash has a notably lower U-value compared to the ordinary window sash due to the impact of airtightness and reverse heat flux during noon time owing to the greenhouse effect between transparent cover and internal glazing. The overall U-value of ordinary window sash is found to be 2.67 W/m2K, whereas it is 1.79 W/m2K for airtight window sash. It is observed that about 33% of reduction in heat losses can be achieved via airtight windows.

In this study eight methods are evaluated for a gas turbine cogeneration cycle to improve the efficiency. These methods are increasing gas turbine inlet air temperature, cooling the inlet air of the compressor, air preheating, fuel preheating, increasing compressor inlet air pressure, increasing air excess rates, steam injection, and humidification of the inlet air of the compressor. These methods are studied in order to compare their effects on the performance of the systems. The effects of these methods on the exergetic efficiency depend on the kind of the cogeneration cycle. By combining recuperation, preheating fuel and steam injection methods high efficiency can be achieved. The combined methods give the best results under variable heat demands of the market. An appropriate combination of the efficiency improvement methods may increase the exergetic efficiency about 20 %. The results show that efficiency improvement methods must be applied together whenever it is possible.

- MakaleYalnız künye2017Scopus SJRQ2Harvesting of microalgae via submerged membranes: Flux, fouling and its reversibility
Elcik, Harun; Cakmakci, Mehmet
The purpose of this study was to investigate membrane fouling caused by microalgal cells in submerged membrane systems consisting of polymeric and ceramic microfiltration membranes. In this study, one polymeric (flat-sheet, pore size: 0.2 μm) and two ceramic (flat-sheet, pore size: 0.2 μm and cylindrical, pore size: 1 μm) membranes were used. Physical cleaning was performed with water and air to determine the potential for reversible and irreversible membrane fouling. The study results showed that substantial irreversible membrane fouling (after four filtration cycles, irreversible fouling degree 27% (cleaning with water) and 38% (cleaning with air)) occurs in the polymeric membrane. In cleaning studies performed using water and air on ceramic membranes, it was observed that compressed air was more effective (recovery rate: 87-91%) for membrane cleaning. The harvesting performance of the membranes was examined through critical flux experiments. The critical flux values for polymeric membrane with a pore size of 0.20 μm and ceramic membranes with a pore size of 0.20 μm and 1 μm were ≤ 95 L/m2hour, ≤ 70 L/m2hour and ≤ 55 L/m2hour, respectively. It was determined that critical flux varies depending on the membrane material and the pore size. To obtain more information on membrane fouling caused by microalgal cells, the characterization of the fouled polymeric membrane was performed. This study concluded that ceramic membranes with a pore size of 0.2-1 μm in the submerged membrane system could be efficiently used for microalgae harvesting by cleaning the membrane with compressed air at regular intervals.

- MakaleYalnız künye2017Scopus SJRQ1An accurate model for photovoltaic (PV) modules to determine electrical characteristics and thermodynamic performance parameters
Cuce, Erdem; Cuce, Pinar Mert; Karakas, Ibrahim Hakki; Bali, Tulin
Accurate and reliable modelling of photovoltaic (PV) modules is necessary for design and performance estimation of PV systems. Manufacturers of PV modules usually provide some basic electrical parameters specified at only one single operating condition, which is commonly known as standard test conditions (STCs). However, PV systems operate over a wide range of outdoor conditions, and the manufacturers’ reports do not cover sufficient information about how the PV modules react with respect to changes in the two most important environment-oriented conditions, which are solar intensity and operating cell temperature. In this respect, an accurate and reliable tool is required by designers to predict electrical characteristics and thermodynamic performance parameters of PV modules. Therefore in this research, a novel mathematical model is developed to determine solar intensity and cell temperature dependency of PV module parameters and thermodynamic efficiency figures. A simple one-diode model is proposed considering series resistance and shunt conductance. Mitsubishi PV-UJ225GA6 225 W polycrystalline silicon PV module and Kyocera KD205GH-2P 205 W multicrystal PV module are utilised for model assessment. Model results are compared with environmental chamber tests and manufacturers’ performance reports, and a very good agreement is achieved.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2017Scopus SJRQ3Lateral Position Effect of Auxiliary Permanent Magnets on the Magnetic Force Properties of Cylindrical YBCO
Abdioglu, M.; Kabaer, M.; Ozturk, K.; Erdem, O.; Celik, S.
The magnetic levitation force (MLF) and the guidance force (GF) should be improved for loading capacity and stability of Maglev systems, respectively. Although there are some ways to increase these properties, using of auxiliary onboard permanent magnets (PMs) can be considered as the most efficient one. The auxiliary PMs increase the MLF significantly but, at the same time, decrease the GF. We have searched a solution to overcome this problem in this study. Firstly, we have determined the optimum vertical positions of the auxiliary PMs and then we have investigated the vertical levitation force and lateral guidance force of hybrid Maglev system depending on lateral position of auxiliary PMs in different cooling heights (CHs). A cylindrical YBCO superconductor, fabricated by a top seeding method with the diameter of 45 mm and the height of 15 mm, was used as a high-temperature superconductor (HTS). The maximum increment rate in MLF and the minimum decrement rate in GF were observed as 277 and 54 %, respectively. The increment in MLF was obtained five times more than the decrement in GF, and this reality points out that the results of this study can be useful for improving the loading capacity and thus enhancing the practical applicability of Maglev systems.
