Appropriate maceration duration for the extraction of propolis

    Ecem-Bayram, Nesrin; Gercek, Ynsuf Can

The importance of the use of natural products as nutritional supplements in order to increase the quality of life and prevent diseases has increased in recent years. Among these products, propolis produced by honey bees is collected from plants and has a very complex structure in terms of chemical content. Propolis and its extracts have been used by humans for centuries because of its various bioactive properties. Although different methods can be used in the extraction stage, the most commonly used technique is extraction by maceration. However, there is no standard time period for extraction of propolis by maceration. We aimed to determine the changes in the concentrations of flavonoid group compounds pinocembrin, chrysin, tectochrysin, pi-nostrobin chalcone, gengwanin, naringenin and galangin from propolis samples exposed to seven different periods (1, 2, 5 10, 15, 20, 30 days) of maceration using GC-MS. The flavonoids pinocembrin, chrysin, tectochrysin, and naringenin reached their maximum concentrations at the end of 15 days of maceration and a decrease in their concentrations was observed after this period. The concentrations of other flavonoids did not show a steady increase or decrease with different maceration times. As a result, it can be said that the appropriate duration of maceration to extract the flavonoids responsible for propolis' numerous activities varies depending on the origin of the propolis and the nature of the compounds to be extracted.

A special interpretation of the concept constant breadth for a space curve

    Agirman Aydin, Tuba

The definition of curve of constant breadth in the literature is made by using tangent vectors, which are parallel and opposite directions, at opposite points of the curve. In this study, normal vectors of the curve, which are parallel and opposite directions are placed at the exit point of the concept of curve of constant breadth. In this study, on the concept of curve of constant breadth according to normal vector is worked. At the conclusion of the study, is obtained a system of linear differential equations with variable coefficients characterizing space curves of constant breadth according to normal vector. The coefficients of this system of equations are functions depend on the curvature and torsion of the curve. Then is obtained an approximate solution of this system by using the Taylor matrix collocation method. In summary, in this study, a different interpretation is made for the concept of space curve of constant breadth, the first time. Then this interpretation is used to obtain a characterization. As a result, this characterization we've obtained is solved.

A method for active seismic earth thrusts of granular backfill acting on cantilever retaining walls

    Kamiloğlu, Hakan Alper; Şadoğlu, Erol

The failure mechanism plays an important role in the active seismic earth thrusts acting on cantilever retaining walls. Cantilever retaining walls can be classified as having a long heel or a short heel based on the intersection between the stem of the retaining wall and the failure surface. In the literature, different seismic earth thrust calculation methods have been suggested considering the long heel or the short heel cases. However, no unique study has been done that is applicable to walls with either a long heel or a short heel. The aim of this study is to suggest a new active seismic earth thrust calculation method for granular soils which is applicable to retaining walls with either a short heel or a long heel using a pseudo-static approach. Three different earth thrusts are considered to be acting on three different parts of a wall backface. Each thrust is derived in terms of the parameters defining the wall geometry, the soil properties and the seismic activity. The thrust coefficients are determined by maximizing the sum of the horizontal components of the earth thrusts. An algorithm is developed and coded for this aim. The results of the suggested method are compared with those of other conventional methods and an experimental study.

Ozenirler, Cigdem; Gencay Celemli, Omur; Ecem Bayram, Nesrin; Dikmen, Fatih; Zare, Golshan; Celikbicak, Omur; Sorkun, Kadriye

The purpose of this study was to contribute toward characterizing the general properties of the Onobrychis Miller (sainfoin) honey. We analyzed 21 samples of Onobrychis honeys, which were collected in 2013, from Northeast Anatolia according to their microscopic and physicochemical features (fructose/glucose (F/G) ratio, 5-(hydroxymethyl) furan-2-carbaldehyde (HMF) value, and volatile compounds). The relationships were examined between these variables with statistical methods such as principal component, regression, and correlation analyses. Statistical analyses revealed certain correlation patterns between several parameters. Onobrychis radiata (Desf.) M. Bieb., O. tournefortii (Willd.) Desv., O. oxyodonta Boiss. and Onobrychis spp. pollens were identified.TPN-10 ranged from 6532 to 481157 while the HMF values were between 0.1-7.5 mg/kg and F/G ratios were between 0.8-1.3. Alcohols, aldehydes, aliphatic acids and their esters, carboxylic acids and their esters, hydrocarbons, flavonoids, ketones, sugars and vitamins were identified in the honey samples within ranges of 0-11.95%, 0-16.76%, 0-24.72%, 0-1.86%, 0-14.71%, 2.74-7.09%, 0-27.02%, 5.12-51.39%, and 0-21.36%, respectively.Although it was not significant, a positive correlation between flavonoids and Onobrychis pollen number was calculated via correlation analysis. There was no meaningful correlation between Onobrychis pollen number and other parameters. Although a negative trend between flavonoids and sugars was observed, it was not significant. F/G ratio was found to be positively correlated with sugars, HMF, and TPN-10 of which the latter two parameters had significant values. Furthermore, a significant positive correlation between TPN-10 and HMF was also detected.

Experimental Study of Hydrogen Addition on Waste Cooking Oil Biodiesel-Diesel-Butanol Fuel Blends in a DI Diesel Engine

Sarıkoç, Selçuk; Ünalan, Sebahattin; Örs, İlker

In this study, the effects of hydrogen addition on diesel-biodiesel-butanol fuel blends were investigated in terms of engine performance, combustion, and emission characteristics under different engine operating conditions. The experiments were performed with eight different fuel blends at a constant engine speed of 2000 rpm, which is the maximum torque value of all test fuels. The four operating conditions were at 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% engine loads. Hydrogen was delivered to diesel-biodiesel-butanol fuel blends through the intake manifold with different rates of fuel mass consumption. The experiment results were compared with euro diesel and absence of hydrogen addition for all test fuels. The experimental results have revealed that at 2000 rpm engine speed, the brake torque, in-cylinder pressure, and exhaust gas temperature increased with the addition of hydrogen. Nevertheless, the brake-specific fuel consumption, carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrocarbon (HC), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and smoke opacity emissions decreased under various engine conditions. The heat release rate was generally shown to be decreased with higher engine loads and increased with lower engine load conditions, while a rise in thermal efficiency was observed. Therefore, the addition of hydrogen in a diesel engine usually exhibited fewer emissions, improved the combustion process, and increased the brake torques of the engine by comparison to the absence of hydrogen addition.

Strategies for ideal indoor environments towards low/zero carbon buildings through a biomimetic approach

Cuce, Erdem; Nachan, Zaid; Cuce, Pinar Mert; Sher, Farooq; Neighbour, Gareth B.

Biomimicry is a relatively new discipline of applied science that seeks inspiration from natural systems for innovative solutions to human problems. Taking nature as ‘model, mentor and measure’ receives wide acceptance in the field of architecture but predominantly in conceptualising novel forms. The biomimicry concept is comprehensively analysed for its ability to provide more sustainable and possibly even regenerative built environments. As part of this study, first, various frameworks for approaching ‘biomimicry’ in general are discussed and then relevant examples pertaining to architecture are evaluated. Case studies are critiqued with respect to varied levels of sustainability achieved and its causative factors. In the second part, an approach model for ‘biomimetic architecture’ in the context of Mumbai is presented and applicable strategies based on climatic adaptation are suggested using local biodiversity as a library of organisms. The generic example of ‘human skin’ addressing the same adaptation is analysed and complemented by a state-of-the-art case study on similar lines. The results achieved clearly reveal that biomimicry is a successful approach to design and operate the sustainable built environments for the buildings of the future.

Quality evaluation and pollen profile of honey samples from different locations

    Bayram, Nesrin Ecem

In this study, it is aimed to determine some physicochemical properties and pollen types of honey samples collected from different regions. Pollen profile, moisture content, HMF, proline, frutose/glucose and electrical conductivity were the parameters analysed in each honey sample. According to the results obtained, all honey samples obtained from different geographic origins were found to be consistent, in terms of the parameters analyzed, with the values given in the Turkish Food Codex Honey Communiqué (2012). It was found that only one honey sample did not comply with the values given in the codex in terms of frutose/glucose ratio. As a result of the melissopalynological experiment, three honey samples were found to be unifloral (two Castanea sativa and one Astragalus spp.) and the others were found to be polyfloral honey. The results obtained indicate that physicochemical properties of the honey samples produced at different points in Turkey differ greatly in accordance with the diversity of the flora of the region.

Determination of the effect of electric fence system on productivity and behaviour of honeybees housed in different beehive types (Apis mellifera L.)

    Erdoğan, Yaşar

This study was conducted in 2018 in order to determine the effects of an electric fence system on honeybee colonies housed in hives made from different materials. The experiment was carried out with honeybee colonies of 36 Caucasian races (Apis mellifera Caucasica) in full-size Langstroth hive. In terms of mean values of the aggressive behaviour of honeybee colonies were found to be the highest (13.57 number/colony) application group where the conductor wires of electric fence system are within a 1 m distance from hives and the lowest (2.39 number/colony) were obtained from control application group. The highest mean values adult bee development (23.76 ± 12.34 number/colony), development of brood area (5421.25 ± 1432.75 cm 2 /colony), nectar flow period weight gain (46.42 ± 3.61 kg/colony), flight activity (107.38 ± 11.74 number/colony) and honey yield (21.55 ± 1.54 kg/colony) were determined in control groups. When the average values of honeybees robbing behaviour were examined, the highest value (3.33 ± 0.32 number/colony) was determined in the control groups. This experiment shows that the electromagnetic and electric fields produced by the electric fence system have negative effects on honeybees. In order to minimise the negative effects of the electric fence system on the bees, hives should be covered with a metal screen or should be placed long distance (minimum 2 m) from the electric fences.Highlights The electric fence system is the most effective method of keeping honeybee colonies. At the same time, the electric fence system disturbs the honeybees. All negativity can be completely eliminated by simple measures.

The relationship between political stability, fixed capital, employment, and economic growth: An analysis on MENA countries

    Boz, Fusun Celebi

As the growth theories before 1980 fell short in explaining the developmental differences in countries and could not provide a solution to the problems of underdeveloped countries, a necessity for new growth models emerged. In connection to the exogenous nature of technology, the perception that all countries can achieve economic growth depending on capital stock and employment volume was in time replaced by the effectiveness of institutional and social factors in this process, and it was seen that other factors rather than economic factors would be influential in terms of achieving economic growth. In the scope of institutional factors, the political regimes of countries were aimed to be analyzed, and accordingly, strong institutional structures were associated with democracy. Thus, it may be stated that, while democratic regimes are dominant in developed societies, antidemocratic regimes are encountered in developing societies. In this context, the type of the political regime is considered to be the main variable for economic growth. As the type of the political regime was inadequate in completely explaining economic growth, the concept of political stability started to be considered in the literature (Telatar, 2003:74-75). The concept of political stability is important in terms of determination of economic policies in a country for the long-term rather than the short-term and for rational decisions by managers in the private sector. Moreover, political instability may lead to property issues by bringing about weaknesses in the legal system. This situation may affect.

Effect of fly ash and silica fume on hardened properties of foam concrete

Gökçe, H. Süleyman; Hatungimana, Daniel; Ramyar, Kambiz

In this study, the effects of foam content as well as fly ash and silica fume inclusion on some physical and mechanical properties of foam concrete, subjected to various curing regimes, were researched. Totally, forty-five series of foam concrete mixtures were prepared at three replacement levels of fly ash and silica fume (0, 10 and 20%, by weight of cement), at three foam contents (0, 31 and 47%, by volume) and at three curing regimes (7- and 28-day standard water curing and autoclave curing). Density, water absorption, compressive strength and thermal conductivity values of the mixtures were determined on prismatic specimens with dimensions of 40 × 40 × 160 mm. The density (oven dry), water absorption, compressive strength and thermal conductivity results of the foam concrete were found to be between 873–1998 kg/m3, 3.5–35.9%, 1.5–88.1 MPa and, 0.239–0.942 W/m.K, respectively. A balanced benefit with regard to both compressive strength and water absorption of foam concrete was found in the mix with density of 1320 kg/m3. Particularly in the mixtures having high foam content, silica fume introduction resulted in superior compressive strength values and greater compressive strength/thermal conductivity ratios than fly ash introduction.

The effect of taboo content on incidental vocabulary acquisition in a foreign language: A facial expression analysis study

    Dolgunsöz, Emrah

This study aims to examine how taboo content affects language learner psychology and language learning gains in a multi-modal learning environment by using facial expression analysis. 40 Muslim language learners were initially asked about their opinions on pork and watched a subtitled cooking video including pork visuals and their facial expressions were recorded. Before watching the video, only 20 of them were told it was lamb. The video was followed by a stimulated recall procedure, a cloze test and an output test. The results of the facial data analysis showed that Muslim learners were disgusted by the taboo content, which was in line with their opinions on pork taboo. However, this negative emotion did not significantly affect their test performance. Computer assisted facial expression analysis was also introduced as a biometric research technique for second language research.

Dönmez, Cem Çaǧri; Atalan, Abdulkadir; Locurcio, Marco

The purpose of this research was to establish the urban competitiveness index (UCI) by using the statistical optimization method for the econophysics approach. With this technique, economic data regarding urban areas and the factors affecting UCI have been determined. The research covers 30 urban centres located in 15 countries worldwide. Urban centres with the gross domestic product per capita of $10,000 or more were taken into consideration. The significant levels of the factors were determined with the statistical optimization method, and optimum values were calculated with the developed optimization models. Re-index values were calculated and compared with the results of PricewaterhouseCoopers and World Economic Forum. According to the results, the high UCI value of these locations depends not only on economic data but also on high values of social factors. Thus, those locations are becoming the centre of attraction for investments and capital with increasing competitiveness.

Effects of oregano essential oil (Origanum syriacum l.) on performance, egg quality, intestinal morphology and oxidative stress in laying hens; [Einfluss von oregano-öl (Origanum syriacum l.) auf leistung, eiqualität, darmmorphologie und oxidativen stress bei legehennen]

    Gul, M.; Yilmaz, E.; Yildirim, B.A.; Sezmis, G.; Kaya, A.; Timurkaan, S.; Onel, S.E.; Tekce, E.

This study aimed to investigate the effects that including different levels of oregano essential oil (Origanum syriacum L.) (200, 400, and 600 mg/kg) in the diets of laying hens had on performance, egg quality, and intestinal morphology, as well as egg malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, blood lipid peroxidation, and oxidative stress parameters. The study used a total of 120 Lohmann white laying hens aged 20 to 22 weeks. The experiment comprised the following three treatment groups, based on the dosages of oregano essential oil: 200 mg/kg (A), 400 mg/kg (B), 600 mg/kg (C); and a control group (K) that did not use oregano essential oil. Each group included 30 hens and each was divided into six subgroups with five hens each. In this study, feed intake and egg weight were significantly higher in the treatment groups than in the control group (P=0.046; P< 0.001). There was no difference among the groups in terms of eggshell strength, egg shape index, eggshell thickness, albumin index, or yolk index. However, there was a significant difference in eggshell weight, yolk color and Haugh unit in the experimental groups (P=0.015; P=0.031; P=0.042). The MDA levels in the yolk were lowest in group A (P< 0.05). In all groups with the exception of group A, yolk and serum MDA levels increased while superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase decreased as the doses of oregano essential oil increased (P< 0.001; P< 0.001; P< 0.01; P< 0.001). There was no significant serum glutathione level. In the histological analysis of the intestine, the villus height was higher in group C than in the control group (P=0.010). Based on these results, we concluded that 200 mg/kg was the most effective dose of oregano essential oil for improving performance, egg quality, and intestinal morphology while reducing oxidative stress in laying hens.

Bayram, Ozkan; Sener, Emre; İgman, Erdal; Simsek, Onder

In this study, it was aimed to grow Nickel doped (0.0 at.%, 0.16 at.%, 0.20 at. % and 0.24 at. %) Zinc Oxide (NZO) thin films on quartz substrates using Magnetron Sputtering technique. NZO thin films were obtained at a temperature of 450 °C, a pressure of 480 m Torr and a deposition time of 30 min. Co-sputtering process for both Ni and ZnO target was performed using two separate power sources. The DC power of the Ni target material was 20, 30 and 40 W, respectively while the radio frequency (RF) power of the Zinc oxide (ZnO) target material was set to 150 W. Using XRD analysis, thin films were found to have polycrystalline morphology, and the average crystallite size changed significantly depending on the increased Ni doping level. The optical Transmittance of the thin films was greater than 90% in the visible region (550 nm), and this value tends to decrease slightly by Ni doping. The optical band gap (E g ) firstly decreased and then slightly increased with the Nickel doping ratio and these values were found to be 3.23 eV, 3.11 eV and 3.15 eV, respectively, with increase of Ni doping.

Şahin, Engin; Serencam, Hüseyin; Dertli, Enes

In this study, a total of 10 bacterial strains were screened for their ability to reduce cyclohexyl(phenyl)methanone 1 to its corresponding alcohol. Among these strains, Lactobacillus paracasei BD101 was found to be the most successful biocatalyst to reduce the ketones to the corresponding alcohols. The reaction conditions were systematically optimized for the reducing agent L paracasei BD101, which showed high enantioselectivity and conversion for the bioreduction. The preparative scale asymmetric reduction of cyclohexyl(phenyl)methanone (1) by L paracasei BD101 gave (S)-cyclohexyl(phenyl)methanol (2) with 92% yield and >99% enantiomeric excess. The preparative scale study was carried out, and a total of 5.602 g of (S)-cyclohexyl(phenyl)methanol in high enantiomerically pure form (>99% enantiomeric excess) was produced. L paracasei BD101 has been shown to be an important biocatalyst in asymmetric reduction of bulky substrates. This study demonstrates the first example of the effective synthesis of (S)-cyclohexyl(phenyl)methanol by the L paracasei BD101 as a biocatalyst in preparative scale.

Optical, surface and magnetic properties of the Ti-doped GaN nanosheets on glass and PET substrates by thermionic vacuum arc (TVA) method

Pat, Suat; Korkmaz, Şadan; Özen, Soner; Şenay, Volkan

Room-temperature ferromagnetism of GaN and doped GaN materials has been reported in nanostructured form. Especially, nanoparticles show ferromagnetic properties at room temperature. In this paper, Ti-doped effects on GaN were deposited on glass and Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates by thermionic vacuum arc and their room temperature magnetic properties are presented for the first time. The structure of the Ti-doped GaN was crystallized in a novel form, nano honeycomb formation. Optical and surface properties of the nano honeycombs and honeycomb nanosheets were determined. GaN and TiN phases were detected in X-ray diffraction patterns. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) device were used for imaging of the crystal structure. According to FESEM images, hexagonal crystal formations were detected for all samples. Crystal formations are very good oriented on PET substrates materials according to glass samples. The band gap value of the sample is changed by crystallization dimension. It was found that increasing crystallizations and decreasing crystal dimensions were increased the band gap of the Ti-doped GaN approximately 50 meV. Fourier transform infrared spectra and a vibrating sample magnetometer results were presented. These results confirm the Ti doped GaN honeycomb nanosheets and nano honeycombs show the room temperature ferromagnetic properties.

Rotation invariant curvelet based image retrieval & classification via Gaussian mixture model and co-occurrence features

    Engin, M. Alptekin; Cavusoglu, Bulent

Demand for better retrieval methods continue to outstrip the capabilities of available technologies despite the rapid growth of new feature extraction techniques. Extracting discriminatory features that contain texture specific information are of crucial importance in image indexing. This paper presents a novel rotation invariant texture representation model based on the multi-resolution curvelet transform via co-occurrence and Gaussian mixture features for image retrieval and classification. To extract these features, curvelet transform is applied and the coefficients are obtained at each scale and orientation. The Gaussian mixture model (GMM) features are computed from each of the sub bands and co-occurrence features are computed for only specific sub band. Rotation invariance is provided by applying cycle-shift around the GMM features. The proposed method is evaluated on well-known databases such as Brodatz, Outex_TC_00010, Outex_TC_00012, Outex_TC_00012horizon, Outex_TC_00012tl84, Vistex and KTH-TIPS. When the feature vector is analyzed in terms of its size, it is observed that its dimension is smaller than that of the existing rotation-invariant variants and it has a very good performance. Simulation results show a good performance achieved by combining different techniques with the curvelet transform. Proposed method results in high degree of success rate in classification and in precision-recall value for retrieval.
