Coşkun, Hüseyin; Yildiz, Ibrahim; Alkan, Ömer

Background/aim: Due to the high contribution of psychological problems to the decline in the comfortable lifestyle of the older individuals, determining the factors that affect individuals' receiving psychological services and searching for solutions based on these factors is one of the primary concerns of national and international decision-makers. This study aimed to identify the factors that affect older individuals' access to psychological assistance services in Turkey. Methods: In this study, the Turkish Health Research micro dataset, which was conducted by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT) in 2016 and 2019, was employed. In this dataset, the data of 7,252 older individuals were analyzed. Using binary logistic analysis, the factors that are effective for obtaining psychological assistance for the older individuals were identified. Results: According to the results of the analysis, factors such as gender, education, general health status, disease status, payment of health expenditures, and body mass index affected older individuals who received psychological assistance. Conclusion: In recent years, there has been a rise in the availability of psychological assistance services for the older individuals. By identifying factors that increase the likelihood of receiving psychological assistance services, this study is expected to contribute to the creation and regulation of psychological assistance services to prevent possible psychological problems that may occur in old age, minimize the problems experienced by individuals, and promote a more comfortable lifestyle.

Efficient bio-catalytic production of enentiopure (S)-(4-chlorophenyl)(phenyl)methanol as a drug precursor by using a novel rotatable composite design-based optimization strategy

Tozlu, Nesrullah; Bülbül, Ali Savaş; Özdemir, Akın; Şahin, Engin

Asymmetric bioreductions catalyzed by biocatalysts have demonstrated great promise in manufacturing chiral alcohols. On the other hand, the synthesis of (S)-(4-chlorophenyl)(phenyl)methanol ((S)-2), precursors of L-cloprastine and carbinoxamine, still presents considerable challenges due to the inadequate substrate quantity and production process. In this work, a novel rotatable composite design-based optimization technique was used with the Lactobacillus paracasei BD101 biocatalyst for the asymmetric reduction of (4-chlorophenyl)(phenyl)methanone (1). Optimization conditions of the reaction were determined by the proposed optimization strategy as: pH=5.85, temperature=37 °C, incubation time=71 h, and agitation speed=120 rpm. The reaction conversion and the product of enantiomeric excess (ee) were also predicted to be 97% and 99%, respectively. In the experimental study performed under the determined optimized conditions, (S)-2 was obtained with >99% ee, >99% conversion, and 97% yield. In addition, 1 with the amount of 15.166 g was completely converted to (S)-2 (14.85 g, 97% isolated yield) on a high-gram scale. Notice that the manufacture of (S)-2 on a gram scale utilizing a biocatalyst and an optimization technique is demonstrated in this work for the first time. Finally, an economical, effective, and environmentally friendly biocatalytic process for the biocatalytic synthesis of (S)-2, which have antitussive and antiemetic properties and relax the bronchial muscle, has been demonstrated by the novel rotatable composite design-based optimization method.

Extended 2-D Magnetic Field Modeling of Linear Motor to Investigate the Magnetic Force Parameters of High-Speed Superconducting Maglev

Ozturk, Ufuk Kemal; Abdioglu, Murat; Ozkat, Erkan Caner; Mollahasanoglu, Hakki

A 2-D numerical finite-element model of a linear synchronous motor (LSM) is extended based on the magnetic field and moving mesh properties to investigate the magnetic flux and magnetic force characteristics of the high-speed electromagnetic levitation Maglev system, by using high-temperature superconductor (HTS) coils rather than lower current-carrying copper coils on the onboard unit and permanent magnets (PMs) on the ground. In this 2-D LSM model, the transient time-dependent solver is used to obtain the magnetic flux densities. Both the propulsion and levitation forces increased with increasing supercurrent Jc0 values indicating the advantage of using the superconducting windings in PM-LSM of Maglev vehicles as compared with the copper wires. It was also determined that, although the propulsion force is obtained on a comparable level with the studies in the literature, the lower levitation force issue than the electrodynamic suspension (EDS), despite the better propulsion to levitation force ratio, can be overcome by using the high flux trapping capacity bulk HTSs on the onboard unit together with the superconducting coils. The determined higher propulsion force in this PM-LSM Maglev model indicates that the Maglev vehicle can reach higher velocities in a short distance, and thus, this vehicle can be effectively used in short-distance travels in addition to the long-distance transportation. On the other hand, since the EDS system to be accelerated in a certain time interval via conventional wheels to achieve sufficient levitation, PM-LSM system can be integrated into the EDS Maglev system to ensure higher acceleration in a short time interval in addition to the higher levitation and propulsion force performances.

Utilization of Response Surface Methodology in Optimization of Proline Extraction from Castanea sativa Honey

Ecem Bayram, Nesrin; Kutlu, Naciye; Can Gercek, Yusuf

Proline constitutes approximately 85 % of the amino acid composition of honey. Therefore, the quantitative determination of this amino acid in honey samples is used by many national/international authorities to evaluate the quality of honey types. In this study, it was aimed to achieve maximum proline amino acid extraction from honey samples whose botanical origins were confirmed by melissopalynological analysis. For this reason, based on three different spectrophotometric methods used in the literature for proline analysis, proline extraction was optimized with the Response Surface Method (RSM) and Box-Behnken experimental design. Three independent variables were determined as treatment time (2, 6, and 10 min), treatment temperature (22, 46, and 70 °C), and cooling time (5, 25, and 45 min). As a result of the optimization, it was seen that only significantly effective independent variable on the proline content of honey was the processing temperature. The optimum conditions obtained as a result of the RSM were found to be 2 min for the treatment time, 70 °C for the treatment temperature and 45 min for the cooling time. The composite desirability of the optimum conditions (R2) was found to be 1.00. It was determined that the method proposed by International Honey Commission (IHC) is efficient for proline analysis, but it provides more proline extraction by reducing of time from 10 min to 2 min in hold time in boiling water bath only during the extraction step. As a result, the conditions to be used in order to achieve maximum proline extraction with different spectrophotometric methods were determined and optimum values were determined. In addition, since the botanical origin of honey samples significantly affects the proline content of honey, it can be suggested that this study be optimized for different monofloral honey samples as well.

Optimization of asymmetric bioreduction conditions of 1-(thiophen-2-yl)ethanone by Weissella cibaria N9 using a desirability function-embedded face-centered optimization model

Bolubaid, Mohammed; Özdemir, Akın; Dertli, Enes; Alamoudi, Mohammed; Taylan, Osman; Karaboğa, Derviş; Yılmaz, Mustafa Tahsin; Şahin, Engin

Prochiral ketones can be effectively bio-reduced to chiral secondary alcohols by whole-cell biocatalysts, which are possible useful precursors to synthesize physiologically active chemicals and natural products. When whole-cell biocatalysts strains are used, bioreduction process can be influenced by various cultural factors, and it is vital to optimize these factors that affect selectivity, conversion rate, and yield. In this study, Weissella cibaria N9 was used as whole-cell biocatalyst for bioreduction of 1-(thiophen-2-yl)ethanone, and cultural design factors were optimized using a desirability function-embedded face-centered optimization model. For this, effects of pH (4.5–5.5–6.5, x 1), (2) temperature (25–30–35 °C, x 2), (3) incubation period (24–48–72 h, x 3), and (4) agitation speed (100–150–200 rpm, x 4) on two response variables; (1) ee (%) and (2) cr (%) were tested. Next, desirability function-embedded face-centered optimization model revealed that a pH of 6.43, a temperature of 26.04 °C, an incubation period of 52.41 h, and an agitation speed of 150 rpm were the optimum levels and the estimated ee and cr responses were 99.31% and 98.16%, respectively. Importantly, the actual experimental ee and cr responses were similar to the estimated values indicating the capability of the offered desirability function-embedded face-centered optimization model when using the optimum cultural conditions.

Examining the attitudes of sexually abused and non-abused individuals towards marriage in terms of ambivalent sexism

Çelik, Eyüp; Dombak, Kübra; Kaya, Mehmet; Sahranç, Ümit; Makas, Samet; Koçak, Lokman; Takunyacı, Mithat; Bekir, Seyhan

The research aims to examine the attitudes of individuals who are victims of abuse and those who are not towards marriage in terms of ambivalent sexism. The research study group consists of 718 individuals between the ages of 18–48. Research data were collected with the Inonu Marriage Attitude Scale and Ambivalent Sexism Inventory. As a result of the correlation analysis, it was concluded that the marriage attitude was positively and significantly correlated with hostile and protective sexism. However, since the relationship between hostile sexism and attitudes towards marriage is lower than that of protective sexism, hostile sexism was not included in the model as a control variable. In the covariance analysis, it is seen that protective sexism and sexual abuse predict the attitude towards marriage at a statistically significant level. In addition, when the effect of sexual abuse on the attitude towards marriage was examined by controlling the protective sexism variable, it was found that it was statistically significant without the effect of sexism. According to the findings, it was determined that individuals who were not victims of sexual abuse had higher attitudes towards marriage than those who were victims. Copyright:

Structural characterization of potato starch modified by a 4,6-α-glucanotransferase B from Lactobacillus reuteri E81

Hassanein, Wael S.; İspirli, Hümeyra; Dertli, Enes; Yilmaz, Mustafa Tahsin

The recent reports have revealed that increase in amount of α-1,6 linkages by modification of potato starch with enzyme (glycosyltransferases) treatment gains slowly digestible properties to the starch; however, the formation of new α-1,6-glycosidic linkages diminish the thermal resistance of the starch granules. In this study, a putative GtfB-E81, (a 4,6-α-glucanotransferase-4,6-αGT) from L. reuteri E81 was firstly used to produce a short length of α-1,6 linkages. NMR results revealed that external short chains mostly comprised of 1–6 glucosyl units were newly produced in potato starch, and the α-1,6 linkage ratio was significantly increased from 2.9 % to 36.8 %, suggesting that this novel GtfB-E81 might have potentially an efficient transferase activity. In our study, native and GtfB-E81 modified starches showed fundamental similarities with respect to their molecular properties and treatment of native potato starch with GtfB-E81 did not remarkably change thermal stability of the potato starch, which seems to be very prominent for the food industry given the significantly decreased thermal stability results obtained for the enzyme modified starches reported in the literature. Therefore, the results of this study should open up emerging perspectives for regulating slowly digestible characteristics of potato starch in future studies without a significant change in the molecular, thermal, and crystallographic properties.

Utilisation of an active branching sucrase from Lactobacillus kunkeei AP-37 to produce techno-functional poly-oligosaccharides

İspirli, Hümeyra; Korkmaz, Kader; Arioglu-Tuncil, Seda; Bozkurt, Fatih; Sağdıç, Osman; Tunçil, Yunus Emre; Narbad, Arjan; Dertli, Enes

Glucansucrase AP-37 was extracted from the culture supernatant of Lactobacillus kunkeei AP-37 and characteristics of the glucan produced by the active glucansucrase in terms of structural and functional roles were determined in this study. A molecular weight around 300 kDa was observed for glucansucrase AP-37 and its acceptor reactions with maltose, melibiose and mannose were also conducted to unveil the prebiotic potential of the poly-oligosaccharides formed via these reactions. The core structure of glucan AP-37 was determined by 1H and 13C NMR and GC/MS analysis which revealed that glucan AP-37 was a highly branched dextran composing of high levels of (1 → 3)-linked α-D-glucose units with low levels of (1 → 2)-linked α-D-glucose units. The structural features of the glucan formed, demonstrated that glucansucrase AP-37 was an α-(1 → 3) branching sucrase. Dextran AP-37 was further characterised by FTIR analysis and XRD analysis demonstrated its amorphous nature. A fibrous compact morphology was observed for dextran AP-37 with SEM analysis whereas TGA and DSC analysis revealed its high stability as no degradation was observed up to 312 °C. Finally, the prebiotic potential of the dextran AP-37 and the gluco-oligosaccharides produced with the acceptor reaction of α-(1 → 3) branching sucrase AP-37 were determined and promising results were found for the gluco-oligosaccharides to act as prebiotics.

Biological control of green mould on mandarin fruit through the combined use of antagonistic yeasts

    Öztekin, Sebahat; Karbancioglu-Guler, Funda

Penicillium digitatum is the primary cause of green mould in mandarins during the postharvest period, mainly controlled through synthetic fungicides. This study evaluated the biocontrol of green mould on mandarin fruit with three antagonistic yeasts (Hanseniaspora uvarum, Meyerozyma guilliermondii, and Metschnikowia aff. pulcherrima P01A016), alone or in combination, by elucidating their possible mechanisms of action. All yeast cultures alone (73.85 % − 80.64 %) and their combinations (78.40 % − 83.18 %) reduced the mycelial growth of green mold in vitro. M. aff. pulcherrima reduced the disease incidence and lesion diameters by 75.5 % and 91.3 %, respectively, demonstrating the highest biocontrolling activity alone. Meyerozyma guilliermondii showed the highest biofilm formation (OD 0.93 ± 0.01) and antifungal activity (71.13 %) through volatile organic compounds (VOCs), while H. uvarum displayed cell-wall degrading β-1,3 glucanase activity together with mycocinogenic and VOCs activity. All tested yeasts showed chitinase, protease, and leucine arylamidase activity. Among dual combinations, M. guilliermondii and M. aff. pulcherrima (M-1) were the most compatible, while M. aff. pulcherrima and H. uvarum (M-3) had the least compatibility. The combined application of these three yeasts resulted in synergistic co-operation, demonstrating the highest biocontrolling efficacy in vitro and in vivo. Integrating multiple mechanisms of action in yeasts could create a hurdle approach for inhibiting green mould in citrus as a green alternative to synthetic fungicides. Thus, our study demonstrated that combining biocontrol yeasts can result in beneficial consortia for the eco-friendly and sustainable management of P.digitatum-caused postharvest diseases of mandarins in both the wounded and intact mandarin fruits.

Computational Intelligence Based Point of Interest Detection by Video Surveillance Implementations

Tercan, Emre; Tapkın, Serkan; Küçük, Furkan; Demirtaş, Ali; Özbayoğlu, Ahmet; Türker, Abdussamet

Latest advancement of the computer vision literature and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) reveal many opportunities that are being actively used in various research areas. One of the most important examples for these areas is autonomous vehicles and mapping systems. Point of interest detection is a rising field within autonomous video tracking and autonomous mapping systems. Within the last few years, the number of implementations and research papers started rising due to the advancements in the new deep learning systems. In this paper, our aim is to survey the existing studies implemented on point of interest detection systems that focus on objects on the road (like lanes, road marks), or objects on the roadside (like road signs, restaurants or temporary establishments) so that they can be used for autonomous vehicles and automatic mapping systems. Meanwhile, the roadside point of interest detection problem has been addressed from a transportation industry perspective. At the same time, a deep learning based point of interest detection model based on roadside gas station identification will be introduced as proof of the anticipated concept. Instead of using an internet connection for point of interest retrieval, the proposed model has the capability to work offline for more robustness. A variety of models have been analysed and their detection speed and accuracy performances are compared. Our preliminary results show that it is possible to develop a model achieving a satisfactory real-time performance that can be embedded into autonomous cars such that streaming video analysis and point of interest detection might be achievable in actual utilisation for future implementations.

A bio-inspired solution to alleviate anisotropy of 3D printed engineered cementitious composites (3DP-ECC): Knitting/tilting filaments

Zhou, Wen; McGee, Wes; Gökçe, H. Süleyman; Li, Victor C.

Widely reported anisotropy in 3D printed cementitious structures has been a primary concern to structural integrity, especially for fiber-reinforced cementitious material, e.g., engineered cementitious composites (ECC). To alleviate the anisotropy present in 3D printed ECC (3DP-ECC), two innovative printing patterns, “knitting” and “tilting” filaments, were proposed, mimicking the natural crossed-lamellar structure of conch shells. 3D spatial paths were designed to allocate tensile/flexural resistance to multiple directions and to create an interwoven interface system to strengthen the structure. Four-point bending tests loading from three different directions were conducted. It was found that knitted and tilted filaments revealed superior or comparable bending performance to cast ECC in two favorable orientations. Furthermore, flexural performance in the weakest orientation was notably improved by knitting and tilting, with up-to-179% increases in flexural strength compared with that of parallel filaments. This novel approach holds great promise in alleviating anisotropy of 3DP-ECC without introducing additional reinforcement.

Macit, Emine; Yücel, Nur; Dertli, Enes

Turkish White Cheese is a brined (or pickled) cheese with a salty, acidic flavor and a soft or semi-hard texture. It is the most produced and consumed type of cheese in Turkey. The purpose of this study was to determine the non-starter lactic acid bacteria and yeast microbiota of traditionally produced Turkish White Cheese and analyze the chemical properties and the aroma profile of the cheese. The results of the study identified 27 distinct strains belonging to 14 the non-starter lactic acid bacteria species and 49 different strains belonging to 11 yeast species. Lactobacillus plantarum was found to be the dominant species among the lactic acid bacteria, while Candida zeylanoides was the dominant yeast species in the White Cheese samples. In addition, Kluyveromyces lactis and Debaryomyces hansenii were prominent yeast species in cheese samples. Turkish White Cheese samples had different aromatic properties. The study is highly significant as it anaylzed both non-starter lactic acid bacteria and yeast microbiota of traditionally produced Turkish White Cheese through molecular methods. It also determined and analyzed a number of chemical and aromatic properties of White Cheese.

A novel ignition timing strategy to regulate the energy balance during the warm up phase of an SI engine

Koksal, Hüseyin; Ceviz, Mehmet Akif; Yakut, Kenan; Kaltakkiran, Galip; Özakin, Ahmet Numan

The warm up characteristics of an engine have a significant impact on engine performance and exhaust emissions. In SI engines, the light-off performance of the catalytic converter is also important. One of the methods used to shorten the light off time of the catalytic converter is to retard the ignition time. When the ignition time is retarded, the temperature of the exhaust gases increases. However, in this case, the warm up performance of the engine itself may be adversely affected. In this study, firstly, the effects of ignition timing on the energy balance during the warm up period in an SI test engine were revealed. Then, a novel ignition timing strategy was proposed in order to increase the temperature of the exhaust gases, and not to reduce the engine performance. The novel ignition timing strategy working on the principle of sequentially advanced and retarded ignition at certain intervals during the warm up period provides several advantages. When the novel ignition strategy is applied, the energy loss through the exhaust gas was increased up to 7.2% for several operating conditions, while the reduction in engine performance is eliminated. Moreover, 20% reduction in NO emission has been achieved.

Investigation of the effect of group counselling based on schema therapy on academic expectation stress in high school students

    Koçak, Lokman; Çelik, Eyüp

This research is a preliminary evaluation study to determine whether group counselling based on schema therapy has an effect on academic expectation stress in high school students. In this study, a 2 × 3 split-plot design was used. The Academic Expectation Stress Inventory was applied for data collection purposes. The effect of group counselling based on schema therapy on academic expectation stress was tested using a two-factor ANOVA for mixed measurements. As a result of the analysis, the intervention*time effect was found to be significant with regard to academic expectation stress. The findings obtained in the study reveal that group counselling based on schema therapy creates a significant decrease in adolescents' academic expectation stress level, and this decline continues, as shown in the follow-up test. As a result, it can be said that the group counselling programme based on schema therapy, which was developed as a preliminary evaluation study, has the potential to reduce the academic expectation stress level of high school students.

Assessing Acute Responses to Exercises Performed Within and at the Upper Boundary of Severe Exercise Domain

Norouzi, Mahdi; Cabuk, Refik; Balci, Gorkem Aybars; As, Hakan; Ozkaya, Ozgur

Purpose: The highest work-rate that provides maximal oxygen uptake ((Formula presented.)) may be one of the best exercise stimuli to yield both (Formula presented.) and lactate accumulation. The aim of this study was to analyze physiological and metabolic acute responses of an exercise modality performed at the upper boundary of the severe exercise domain, and compare those responses with exercise modalities applied within the severe exercise domain. Method: Ten trained male cyclists participated in this study. The (Formula presented.), corresponding power output (POVO2max), and the highest work-rate that provides the (Formula presented.) (IHIGH) were determined by constant work-rate exercises. Cyclists performed three high-intensity interval training (HIIT) strategies as follows; HIIT-1: 4–6 × 3-min at 95% of POVO2max with 1:1 (workout/rest ratio); HIIT-2: 16–18 × 1-min at 105% of POVO2max with 1:1; HIIT-3: 4–7 × 1-2-min at the IHIGH with 1:2. Capillary blood samples were analyzed before, immediately after HIIT sessions, and at the first, third, and fifth minutes of recovery periods. Lactate difference between the highest lactate response and resting status was considered as the peak lactate response for each HIIT modality. Results: Time spent at (Formula presented.) was greater at HIIT-1 and HIIT-3 (272 ± 127 and 208 ± 111 seconds, respectively; p = 0.155; effect size = 0.43) when compared to the HIIT-2 (~26 seconds; p < 0.001), while there was a greater lactate accumulation at HIIT-3 (~16 mmol·L−1) when compared to HIIT-1 and HIIT-2 (12 and 14 mmol·L−1, respectively; p < 0.001). Conclusions: In conclusion, HIIT-3 performed at IHIGH was successful to provide time spent at (Formula presented.) with a greater lactate accumulation in a single session.

Green Synthesis, Characterization, Antioxidant, Antibacterial and Enzyme Inhibition Effects of Chestnut (Castanea sativa) Honey-Mediated Silver Nanoparticles

Keskin, Merve; Kaya, Gülşen; Bayram, Sinan; Kurek-Górecka, Anna; Olczyk, Paweł

In this study, chestnut honey-based silver nanoparticles (CH-AgNPs) were synthesized at different temperatures (30, 60 and 90 °C) and these nanoparticles were characterized by different techniques such as UV–vis spectrophotometer, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). The DPPH free radical scavenging assay was used to determine the antioxidant activity of the obtained nanoparticles. The inhibition effects of these nanoparticles for some clinically important enzymes such as myeloperoxidase and collagenase were investigated. In addition, the disk diffusion method (DDM), agar well diffusion (AWD), and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) techniques were used to determine the antibacterial activity of CH-AgNPs. In honey-based silver nanoparticle production processes using green synthesis, it was determined that the nanoparticle sizes decreased from 55 to 27 nm with an increase in temperature. In addition, it was determined that the rate of inhibition of myeloperoxidase (36.4% to 34.0%) and collagenase enzymes (74.2% to 68.7%) increased with a decrease in particle size. As a result of the antibacterial activity tests, it was observed that CH-AgNPs have antibacterial activity against all target pathogens including Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The obtained results show that CH-AgNPs produced using chestnut honey have the potential to be used in fields such as medicine, pharmacy and cosmetic technology.

Determination of the molecular structure and spectroscopic properties of capsaicin

Çınar, Mehmet; Alım, Bünyamin; Alım, Zuhal; Şakar, Erdem

In this study, the ground state molecular structure and spectroscopic features of cis- and trans-forms of capsaicin were investigated using DFT (B3LYP) invoking 6–311++G(d,p) basis set. The optimized geometry of capsaicin was determined for the isolated molecule in a vacuum, and then the vibrational spectra –IR and Raman-were obtained, and the assignments of fundamental vibrational modes were done. By applying the GIAO method, proton and carbon chemical shifts were computed for the gas and solvated phases. Besides using the TD-DFT, the Hirshfeld surface and Molecular Electrostatic Potential surfaces were obtained and evaluated to understand the electronic properties. The Total and partial density of state (TDOS and PDOS) spectra were also examined. All obtained computational results were compared with the previously reported experimental data. A high accuracy was obtained for the ground state geometrical structure, and thus, the vibrational frequencies especially lie on the finger print region are predicted also with a high correlation. Similarly, the optimization of chemical shift values calculated by considering solvent effects with experimental data were found as high R2 values of 0.9953 and 0.9455 for C and H atoms, respectively. This comparison shows that the DFT method precisely predicts capsaicin's molecular and spectroscopic characteristics.

Yaren Aydoğdu, Afranur; Artar, Musa; Ergün, Mustafa

In this paper, the ideal weight for steel truss roof systems is determined while corrosion is considered. Because one of the most crucial problems that steel truss roof systems may experience during their service life is the effect of corrosion. If a corroded structure is designed without considering this effect during the design phase, significant damages and even collapses may occur before it reaches its service life. For this reason, the aim of this study is to make weight optimizations by considering the corrosion effect of steel truss roof systems. Thus, it has been revealed how corrosion that may develop on the truss members' surfaces affects the structure's overall optimum weight. Swarm intelligence-based algorithm approaches, Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), and Butterfly Optimization Algorithm (BOA) are used for this purpose to determine the optimal weight design of five different steel truss roof systems that were previously researched. The main program, which includes structural analysis (FEA) and optimization algorithms, is coded in the MATLAB programming language. The compression and tension bars selected as the limiting functions of the optimization problems are obtained from the stress, displacement, and slenderness conditions specified in the American Institute of Steel Construction-Allowable Strength Design (AISC-ASD, 1989) standard. It is seen that the optimum weight results obtained from all optimization methods for each structure in the non-corrosive condition are relatively similar. This result proves the correctness of the algorithms proposed in this paper. Then, under the influence of corrosion, the optimal weight designs of the structures are carried out. When the findings for the two cases are examined, it can be seen that the optimum weight values for all structures have slightly increased. This is because larger profiles are required due to overcapacity brought on by section loss. The weight of the structure increases in lockstep with the severity of corrosion. All the results like this are presented in detail with the help of tables and graphs in the relevant sections.

Many external factors, such as climatic conditions, geographical differences, and altitude, directly affect the primary and secondary metabolites and therapeutic use of St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum L.), an important plant in alternative medicine. This study was carried out to identify the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities and the content of proline, malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide, flavonoid, anthocyanin, and total phenolic in the St. John's Wort growing naturally in different regions of Bayburt. The St. John's Wort samples were collected from 11 different locations. As a result of the analyses carried out on the plant samples, it was found that the content of proline was within the range of 4.6-8.2 µmol g-1 DW, the amount of malondialdehyde was within the range of 0.69-1.10 nmol g-1 DW, the amount of hydrogen peroxide was within the range of 79.89-155.49 µmol g-1 DW, the amount of flavonoids was within the range of 91.38%-100.27%, the amount of anthocyanin was within the range of 0.15-1.11 mkmol g-1 DW, the total phenolic content was within the range of 15.82-45.22 mg GAE g-1, and the antioxidant activity was within the range of 6.07-105.60 µg mL-1. In conclusion, although the biochemical contents and nonenzymatic antioxidant activities showed a wide variety, the antioxidant activity was found to be higher in samples 5, 8, and 11. According to the antimicrobial activity results, some plant extracts were effective on bacteria and fungi, especially samples 5, 6, 8, and 11 showed an effect at the concentration of 200 μg mL-1. This study, the first regional study on this subject, will contribute to future research and clinical trials in the health field.
