Looking inside the strategic plans: Strengths and weaknesses of Turkish higher education institutions; [Mirando dentro de los planes estratégicos: Fortalezas y debilidades de las instituciones de educación superior Turcas]

    Selvitopu, Abdullah; Kaya, Metin

As strengths and weaknesses are regarded as internal features of an organization, the present study focused on strengths and weaknesses of Turkish public universities by analyzing the SWOTs (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) of twenty higher education institutions. By applying qualitative content analytical tools, we tried to make some comparisons, twenty universities, ten ranked at the top and ten at the bottom of the URAP list, were chosen to analyze the strengths and weaknesses. Findings show that all universities top or bottom ones have internal strengths and weaknesses on their own. The strengths of universities differ according to their size, field of service, structure, history and geographical locations. Top universities which are in big size, have a deeply rooted history and situated in a better geographical location can enjoy the strengths as qualified faculty members, organizational culture, internationalization process, infrastructure and good alumni relations. On the other hand, bottom universities which have not got those advantages deal with other strengths such as young faculty members, organizational support and internal communication. As for the weaknesses, top universities need more budget and acceptable rate of faculty member and student. Bottom ones need more qualified faculty members, students and staff. As they are located in disadvantageous regions, they are in need of some promotions to attract faculties, staff, national and international students. In addition, they also should be aware of the contributions of good alumni relations.

Tracking the pre-service teachers’ development of communicative skills and their beliefs towards communicative approach

    Kurnaz, Yıldıray; Özbay, Ali Şükrü

Concerns about the purpose of developing communicative skills in English teaching and approaches to overcome these concerns have always had an important place in language teaching. In this context, besides the fact that teachers‟ roles are important, their beliefs about the approach have a profound influence on their professional achievement. In this regard, the aim of the present study was to determine Turkish English as a Foreign Language (EFL) student teachers‟ beliefs about developing their communicative skills with the communicative approach in Turkish context. The data obtained through Pre-Service Teacher Beliefs Questionnaire, in which 445 participants took part, and focus group interviews with 28 participants at several times and places were analysed by quantitative and qualitative data analysis methods respectively. As a result of the analysis, it was found that EFL student teachers generally had positive attitudes towards improving communicative skills of their prospective students with communicative approach; however, it was difficult for this approach to work properly in Turkey and in Turkish education system due to various reasons. In addition, it was found that EFL student teachers' self-efficacy beliefs were correlated with their attitudes towards the approach, and that many sub-factors such as second language proficiency also had an influence on the attitudes. Lastly, these findings were found to be significantly different according to the departments (ELL, ELT) rather than age and gender.

Teacher opinions about children's awareness of zero-waste and recycling in the pre-school education years

    Bulut, Ayhan

The aim of this study is to encourage the development of pre-school teachers by raising their awareness about zero-waste and recycling activities. The need for this research is linked to the lack of prominence about the concept of zero-waste in pre-school programs in Turkey, and also the limited inclusion of opportunities for pre-school students to learn about recycling strategies. This research uses a qualitative design and adopts a case-study approach. The study group was purposefully sampled using criterion-sampling. Interviews were conducted with forty pre-school education teachers who volunteered to support the research, had at least five years experience, and had received training about zero-waste and recycling activities. The interviews with pre-school education teachers were conducted once and took approximately fifty minutes. Content analysis and descriptive analysis approaches were employed. The research findings were based on each interview question, and tables were created under five headings. Research findings indicate that most of the pre-school education teachers stated the children's awareness about zero-waste and recycling was insufficient during the pre-school education years. Teachers have stated that awareness about zero-waste and recycling can be enriched through the inclusion of specific content and the use of visual materials in pre-school education programs. Additionally, pre-school education teachers emphasized that using an educational game will make the learning process about zero-waste and recycling strategies more enjoyable and will also be the most suitable method in terms of the children's age and levels of development. On the other hand, teachers have stated that in order to raise children's awareness about zero-waste and recycling, there should be further studies conducted about how such awareness will contribute to the social and emotional development of children as well as studies about how children can learn-by-doing.

Reading comprehension, Mathematics self-efficacy perception, and Mathematics attitude as correlates of students’ non-routine Mathematics problem-solving skills in Turkey

Öztürk, Mesut; Akkan, Yaşar; Kaplan, Abdullah

Literature that investigates the factors affecting problem-solving evaluates the cognitive and affective components, such as reading comprehension, metacognition, Mathematics anxiety, Mathematics attitude and Mathematics self-efficacy. Recently, studies have shown that Mathematics attitude and Mathematics self-efficacy as affective factors, and reading comprehension as a cognitive factor could play a crucial role in the problem-solving of middle school students. This study investigated the influence of reading comprehension skill, Mathematics self-efficacy perception and Mathematics attitude on non-routine Mathematics problem-solving skills. It is hypothesized that non-routine problem-solving skills are related to reading comprehension skills, Mathematics self-efficacy perception and Mathematics attitudes. To achieve this aim, a reading comprehension skill test, a Mathematics self-efficacy perception scale, a Mathematics attitude scale and a non-routine problem-solving skill test were applied. The instruments were completed by 362 middle school students. A correlation analysis was used to determine the relationship of variables on non-routine problem-solving skills, and the predictive effects of the predictor variables on non-routine Mathematics problem-solving skills were examined by hierarchical regression analysis. The analysis also showed that for middle-school students’ non-routine Mathematics problem-solving skills, all related factors–reading comprehension, Mathematics self-efficacy perception and Mathematics attitude were significant. Reading comprehension skills and Mathematics self-efficacy perception significantly predicted problem-solving skills, and both predictors explained a total of 22% of the total variance.

‘Tele-education’ in the COVID-19 pandemic process in Turkey: A mental diaspora research specific to Turkish Language Teaching students

    Ustabulut, Mete Yusuf; Keskin, Savaş

This study tries to map educational processes that have to be transformed into the extraordinary history of the COVID-19 pandemic and adapt to the ‘new normal’ with a relational and metaphoric approach. In the study, the existing physical and mental conditions of the students who are "scattered/dispersed" geographically due to the mandatory "return home" in the pandemic process are conceptualized with the metaphor of the "diaspora". The study aims to draw attention to student-centered social problems by questioning the functionality of tele-education processes, which are designed to compensate for interrupted educational relationships and make them sustainable again. It is aimed to measure the effects of online consciousness that were deterritorialized by human-computer interaction and computer-mediated communication on student performances and to understand student motivations during the tele-education process. Therefore, a survey was conducted at ten universities in Turkey and reached 150 students through the snowball sampling technique. The results of the study show that the student self-perception of the tele-education process coincides with the diasporic identity and this unusual technology integration that cannot be fully compensated triggers mental diaspora feelings.

How Can a Teacher Become the Better Version of Oneself?

    Bilici, Özlem Utku

In order to improve professionally, teachers need to question themselves throughout theirteaching because one can get feedback from oneself as well instead of listening to others’comments, suggestions or questions. On the other hand, getting feedback from colleagues andlearners is invaluable for professional improvement. This study was conducted as a self-study by anovice teacher. It was aimed at exploring the teaching practice of the teacher by focusing on themotivation issue specifically. Two critical friends actively participated in the study whereas thestudents of the teacher were passively involved in this self-study, too. The data were collectedthrough weekly diaries, Teacher Sense of Efficacy Scale, Student Trust in Teacher Survey andwritten reflections of critical friends. Content analysis was utilized to analyses qualitative data andquantitative data were analyzed through SPSS, descriptive statistics were computed to revealquantitative results. The findings showed that teacher self-efficacy is crucial to sustaining aproductive teaching environment and a healthy teacher-student relationship. In addition, it wasfound out that teachers have various roles and responsibilities, which may sometimes overlap, bothin and outside the classroom. Regarding the self-study methodology and critical friendship, it wasconcluded that conducting a self-study is extremely helpful for professional development of ateacher because evaluation and criticism allow teachers to question themselves in a critical mannerand investigate what has been done and what could have been done for the betterment of theirteaching and professional being.

Öztürk, Mesut; Akkan, Yaşar; Kaplan, Abdullah

This case study aims to examine the elementary school student teachers’ process of making basic mathematical proofs in terms of their cognition and arguments which they use. In this study, 89 voluntary first graders in an elementary teacher department are divided into three groups according to their basic mathematics midterm scores: (1) high, (2) medium and (3) low achievement. Two students one of which male and the other one is female are randomly selected from each group (6 in total). Data is collected through activity card and thinking aloud protocol. On the activity card, two propositions are given to the students about the topic of sets and they are asked to prove these propositions by thinking aloud. For the analysis of the data, descriptive analysis method, which is based on the analysis of the collected qualitative data in accordance with certain previously formed categories, is used. In order to examine the cognitive processes of the primary school teaching students in the process of making proof, this study uses the cognitive stages of formal expression with the concrete development, symbolization and actions in the development of the mental world of mathematics, developed by Tall (2004) and explained in detail by Tall and Mejia-Ramos (2010). In order to examine the arguments with which students justify their evidences, Toulmin’s (1958) stages of argument production in evidence making are applied. The results of this study indicate that the students use the cognitive structures of embodiment, symbolization and formal expression together with assertion, presentation, verification, and refutation of limitations.
