Adverse Effects of Commonly Used Acaricides on the Reproductive Physiology of Drone Honeybees (Apis mellifera L.)

    Erdogan, Yasar

This study evaluated the adverse effects of three widely used commercial acaricides (amitraz, flumethrin, and formic acid) on the reproductive physiology and quality parameters of drones (Apis mellifera caucasica), commonly used for the control of the destructive pest, Varroa destructor. The experiment was conducted on 20 colonies at the Bayburt University Beekeeping Application and Research Station during the spring-summer of 2025. The acaricides were applied to different experimental groups shortly before the drone cells were capped. Key reproductive quality parameters including body weight, sexual maturity rate, sperm viability, sperm concentration, and semen volume were assessed. The results showed that all three acaricide applications had statistically significant negative effects (p<0.05) on all measured reproductive parameters. Notably, the amitraz and formic acid treatments caused the most significant decreases in sperm viability and sperm concentration. Furthermore, compared to the control group, significant reductions were observed in both sexual maturity rates and drone body weights. The amitraz treatment group, in particular, exhibited the lowest sperm concentration (0.90±0.04×106/μL), a finding that aligns with the most substantial decrease in body weight (52.24 mg lower than the control). These findings clearly demonstrate that the common acaricidal compounds used against Varroa mites pose potential physiological and reproductive risks to drone. This highlights a critical concern for sustainable beekeeping, especially in queen bee rearing programs, and underscores the need for careful consideration of treatment methods and timing.

Simulation Study on The Sorting of Chiral Active Brownian Colloids By Optical Barriers

    Yücel, Harun

This study considers the dynamics of chiral active Brownian particles (CABPs) through numerical simulations conducted under the influence of an optical field. Unlike passive Brownian particles, CABPs possess a propulsion mechanism and a chiral torque that induce curved trajectories, complex motion, and out-of-equilibrium behavior. These properties make CABPs interesting for both theoretical research and potential applications in the control of active matter. In simulations, CABPs are modeled as spherical particles with a refractive index suspended in a fluid medium (water). When illuminated by an optical field, these particles experience optical forces due to the momentum transfer from the light field, which affects their motion. This interaction provides a powerful method for guiding, confining, or sorting them based on their motile characteristics. As a result, the study demonstrates that optical fields can serve as both static and dynamic barriers, significantly influencing the trajectories of particles. The findings present that optical landscapes can separate and orient CABPs based on their propulsion speed and chirality. The study emphasizes the potential of optical manipulation as a tunable technique for chiral active particles in complex environments.

Psychological Resilience and Psychological Welfare In Employees

    Battal, Fetullah; Öz, Halil Hakdan

The transformation of business life has changed the expectations of both employees and organizations. While employees seek to fulfill their psychological well-being in addition to their material needs, organizations expect employees to adapt quickly to change, solve problems effectively, and handle multiple responsibilities. These mutual expectations have increased the importance of psychological resilience and psychological welfare. However, the rapid pace of scientific production has made it difficult to keep up with the current literature and maintain an objective perspective, potentially leading to superficial rather than in-depth research. This study aims to objectively reveal the current state of research on psychological resilience and welfare. A bibliometric analysis was conducted using R and R Studio software. The data were obtained from the Web of Science database on January 4, 2025, by filtering studies using the terms "business," "management," and "psychology." The final dataset includes 234 publications published between 1996 and 2025. These studies utilized 13,680 references and employed 804 unique keywords. The annual growth rate of publications on the topic was found to be 47.39%. It is expected that this study will contribute to a deeper understanding of the topic, help prevent redundant publications, and provide valuable insights into the conceptual development of psychological resilience and welfare, especially in today's context of dense academic output.

Optimization and Mechanical Performance of Alkali-Activated Bottom Ash and Polypropylene Fiber in Deep Mixing Columns

Yilmaz, Fatih; Kamiloğlu, Hakan Alper; Avlayan, Büşra

Deep mixing columns (DMC) are one of the widely used soil improvement methods in cohesive and cohesionless soils. Cement and lime are predominantly used as conventional binders in DMC grout. Due to high CO2 emissions from conventional binders, the feasibility of using alkali-activated binders as DMC grout is being investigated. This study was conducted in three main stages. In the first stage, the proportions of bottom ash and activator (mixture of 10M NaOH and Na2SiO3) were optimized to achieve the highest UCS value using response surface methodology (RSM). In the second stage, the influence of polypropylene fiber content was examined in detail by incorporating varying amounts of fibers into the optimized binder-activator mixture to determine the optimal fiber content. Since DMC are fully buried, they are cured in the soil media. In this case, the soil temperature, which varies along the depth of the soil, also becomes the curing temperature of the DCM. Due to climate, soil condition and thermodynamic based parameters, curing temperature of the DMC varies throughout the soil depth. Therefore, in the third stage, the effect of curing temperature on the mechanical properties of the stabilized samples was evaluated under different temperatures. Results of the study revealed optimal UCS values with AAB content of 0.3-0.5 and activator content of 0.45-0.5. Polypropylene fiber reinforcement further improved strength, reaching an optimum at 1.50-1.75% content. Curing temperature played a significant role, with UCS and modulus of elasticity increasing up to 30 °C, indicating the importance of considering environmental factors in DMC design. These findings suggest that the optimized mixture has the potential to replace conventional cement-based binders in DMCs, offering a more sustainable solution with lower carbon emissions. Furthermore, the observed influence of curing temperature highlights the need to account for subsurface thermal variations when designing DMCs, as these factors significantly affect strength gain and long-term performance.

Ertürk, Ömer; Çil, Elif; Can, Zehra; Demir, Demet; Bagdatli, Emine

The aim of this study is to determine and compare the physicochemical and biological characterization of some honey samples in the Eastern Black Sea Region of Türkiye. Physicochemical tests investigated the compliance of honey samples with the Turkish Food Codex. The phenolic components were analyzed by RP- HPLC-PDA. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents (TPC, TFC), antioxidant capacity (FRAP, DPPH), urease, glucose-oxidase, and antimicrobial activity (Disc diffusion, MIC) of the samples were determined, and FTIR and UV-Vis analyses were conducted. The spectra of the honey samples revealed the characteristic bands corresponding to the functional groups of minor components. As a result of the physicochemical analyses, it was determined that some of the samples examined did not comply with the standard values defined in the Turkish Food Codex in terms of the examined parameters. Spectral findings show that honey samples have a rich chemical composition. Anzer honey is preferable to other kinds with its rich phenolic and antioxidant content and relatively high antimicrobial activity.

Examining the Mediation of Sport Engagement and Self-Confidence in the Effect of Self-Regulation on Burnout in Athletes: A Structural Equation Modeling Study

    Akeren, İhsan; Çelik, Hüsniye

The aim of this study was to examine the mediation of self-esteem and sport engagement in the effect of self-regulation on burnout in athletes and to compare these variables according to some socio-demographic factors. The participants of the study, which was conducted with a correlational cross-sectional survey design, were 303 athletes of the Faculty of Sports Science. The Sportive Self-Regulation Scale (SSRS) was used to measure self-regulation, the Sport Engagement Scale (SES) to measure sport engagement, the Trait Sport-Confidence Inventory (TSCI) to measure sport confidence, and the Athlete Burnout Questionnaire (ABQ) to measure burnout. Results indicate that there are significant relationships between SSRS, SES, TSCI, and ABQ in student athletes. While sport age was positively associated with SSRS and SES, chronological age was not associated with any variable. When measures were compared by gender and type of sport, females and single sport participants had lower TSCI means. The 4th grade athletes had low SES and TSCI averages and high ABQ averages. Mediation results reveal that SSRS predicts SES and TSCI, SES does not have a mediating role because it does not predict ABQ, TSCI predicts ABQ and SSRS is a full mediator in its effect on ABQ.

Answer-based and reference-based BERT models for automatic scoring of Turkish short answers: The decisive role of task complexity

Kara, Abdulkadir; Kara, Zeynep Avinc; Yildirim, Serkan

In measurement and evaluation processes, natural language responses are often avoided due to time, workload, and reliability concerns. However, the increasing popularity of automatic short-answer grading studies for natural language responses means such answers can now be measured more quickly and reliably. This study aims to build models for predicting automatic short answer scores using the pre-trained BERT deep learning language model and to reveal their effectiveness. For this purpose, two different score prediction models were created using an answerbased approach that aligns student answers with expert judgements and a referencebased approach that matches student answers with reference answers. The dataset includes answers from 246 Physics department students responding to 4 physicsrelated questions. The performance of these models was evaluated on four physics questions representing varying levels of cognitive complexity, using Cohen's Kappa for statistical comparison of agreement with expert scores. Our findings reveal a clear interaction between model architecture and task complexity. The answer-based model was unequivocally superior for the most complex, multi-class task, effectively capturing diverse, nuanced responses. Conversely, the reference-based model demonstrated a statistically significant advantage for a well-defined, mediumcomplexity binary task. This study concludes that the optimal model for ASAG in Turkish is contingent on the cognitive demands of the assessment task, suggesting that a onesize-fits-all solution may not be the most effective approach. This provides a critical framework for practitioners, demonstrating not only that effective models are feasible for complex languages, but that their selection must be guided by task complexity.

THE ROLE OF CAPITAL FLOWS IN THE INTERNATIONAL TRANSMISSION OF US MONETARY POLICY: THE CASE OF TURKEY

    Akar, Nuri Cagri; Varlik, Cemil

This article aims to examine the impacts of US monetary policy (MP) changes on the Turkish economy. A Structural Vector Autoregressive (SVAR) model is estimated for the period 2002:01-2017:12, during which a flexible exchange rate regime was adopted in the Turkish economy. According to the impulse-response analysis, the Turkish interest rate responds positively and significantly to the US Effective Federal Funds Rate (EFFR). AThis result shows that the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey's (CBRT) MP follows the FED's MP, consistent with the dilemma hypothesis of Rey (2015). The analysis also demonstrates that both the EFFR and the VIX have a negative impact on net total capital inflows to the Turkish economy. The impulse-responses for the three components of net capital inflows indicate important conclusions. Firstly, neither EFFR nor VIX has a significant impact on Net Foreign Direct Investment (NFDI) inflows. Secondly, Net Portfolio Investments (NPI) respond significantly to the VIX but not to the EFFR. Thirdly, Net Other Investments (NOI) respond significantly to the EFFR but not to the VIX. These findings indicate that the NOI component plays a direct and major role in the emergence of the US MP's spillover effects on the Turkish MP.

TOURIST DECISION-MAKING WHEN SELECTING A DESTINATION: AN ANALYTICAL HIERARCHY PROCESS ANALYSIS OF CONSUMPTION VALUES

Turk, Bahar; Yildiz, Tugba; Dursun, Mehmet Tahir

Within the context of tourism-related activities, numerous factors may influence a traveller's choice of destinations. Therefore, it is crucial to understand which factors will mostly influence destination selection. It is common knowledge that in a destination selection process, people are likely to visit sites they believe are worthwhile. The Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used in the study, and the data were collected from twelve experts, including six academicians of tourism and destination marketing, and six tour guides with more than ten years of experience in the sector. The research aims to determine the priority order of consumption values in determining the preferences of tourists for the destinations they have selected. The results show that epistemic value was the most important factor in determining a tourist's choice of destination. Moreover, it was found that the following dimensions, namely functional value, i.e., worth the money, emotional value, i.e., feel secure, social value, i.e., meet friendly and hospitable people, epistemic value, i.e., providing novelty experiences, and conditional value, i.e., personal safety have also been given priority. By identifying the priorities of a tourist in the destination selection process, it is envisaged that tourism businesses operating in tourist destinations will be able to provide better value-added activities, such as in food and beverage, lodging, entertainment, and travel agencies. In providing theoretical and empirical information for those involved in the sector, a more efficient process is thus ensured. With the help of this knowledge of what is expected of tourists as consumers, it will be easier to develop comprehensive strategies and solutions.

The interplay between university students' needs, maturity levels (personal, familial, and social), and life satisfaction

    Akyüz, Ahmet Mutlu; Durmus, Ibrahim

It is essential for young Turkish individuals (university students) to rapidly develop their skills and abilities to take on leadership roles in society. To become well-equipped individuals who contribute to societal welfare and development, these young adults must undergo a healthy adolescent maturity process. Therefore, providing a supportive environment for Turkish adolescents during their maturation is crucial. This study investigates how fulfilling all hierarchical needs (PSN, LBN, ESAN) affects Turkish adolescents' life satisfaction (LS) and their personal (PM), familial (FM), and social (SM) maturity levels. The study sample consists of 397 Turkish university students. The proposed research model was tested using PLS-SEM analysis. The findings indicate that fulfilling all hierarchical needs positively affects life satisfaction. Additionally, life satisfaction serves as a mediator between the fulfillment of hierarchical needs and maturity levels. However, the most fundamental physical and security needs are not adequately met, hindering personal maturity. Furthermore, love and belonging needs and esteem and self-actualization needs positively impact all maturity levels.

Academic Freedom Across Liberal Arts Colleges in Europe

    Elgin, Ceyhun

This paper develops a novel index to assess academic freedom within liberal arts colleges (LACs) in Europe, addressing a critical gap in current higher education assessments. Existing university rankings largely overlook academic freedom, an essential element for fostering intellectual inquiry and democratic values. Using a mixed-methods approach-combining legal analysis, surveys, events data, media reviews, and social media analysis-the study constructs a comprehensive tool that captures both overt and subtle forms of academic repression. Findings reveal significant disparities in academic freedom among European LACs, influenced by governance structures, institutional policies, and external pressures such as political interference. The index not only highlights these differences but also offers a framework for policy development and institutional reform. By emphasizing academic freedom as a foundational pillar of higher education, this research calls for stronger institutional commitments and policy frameworks to safeguard it. The index can serve as a model for broader applications beyond the European context, informing global debates on academic autonomy.

Energy, exergy and economic optimization application of integrated dual-loop organic rankine cycle: A case of shopping mall power plant

Topcu, Muhammed Taha; Tozlu, Alperen; Bilen, Kadir

This paper presents a thermoeconomic analysis of the Dual-Loop Organic Rankine Cycle (DORC) integrated into the Erzurum Mall Power Plant (EMPP). The DORC system is designed to utilize waste heat at 425 degrees C and 9 kg/s, producing additional power for the existing plant. The integration of dual-loop ORC systems with different critical temperature fluids into an operational facility is analyzed. High-temperature cycles use working fluids such as Toluene, MDM (octamethylcyclotrisiloxane), n-Nonane, and n-Octane, while refrigerants R236fa, R600a, and R124 are employed in the low-temperature cycles. The designed model demonstrates that up to 11.4 % of the plant's existing capacity can be added as extra power. The Toluene/R600a combination is identified as the best fluid pair, delivering the highest total net power output (653.4 kW), the lowest total cost rate (19.18 $/h), and the highest exergy efficiency (20.18 %). Optimization of the DORC system is performed using the NSGA-II in MATLAB. For the toluene/R600a pair, the optimization results show an increase of 13.52 % in the net power output and decrease of 1.48 % in the total cost rate, which is a significant improvement over the initial results.

The Effects of Artificial Intelligence Supported Flipped Classroom Applications on Learning Experience, Perception, and Artificial Intelligence Literacy in Higher Education

Yavuz, Mehmet; Balat, Sener; Kayali, Bunyami

Rapid changes in the field of technology have greatly affected learning and teaching styles as in every field. Artificial intelligence (AI), which is increasingly used in the field of education for different purposes such as improving learning outcomes or solving teaching problems, is one of the important technologies that contribute to this change. It is thought that there is a need for applications based on AI technology that can meet these needs in terms of sustainability of learning, especially in ODE environments where individual learning and instant feedback are important. Accordingly, the study aims to determine the impact of AI-supported flipped classroom applications on students' AI literacy and to evaluate their experiences and perceptions towards these applications. Explanatory sequential mixed design was used as the method in the study. In this context, in the quantitative phase of the study, a one-group pretest-posttest design from the weak experimental design was used to determine students' perceptions of flipped learning and AI literacy levels. In the qualitative phase of the study, a case study was used to determine students' views on learning experiences. The sample comprised 33 university students enrolled in a Web Design and Coding associate degree program. Data were collected through a flipped learning perception scale, an AI literacy scale, and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative findings revealed a statistically significant improvement in students' AI literacy levels from pre-test to post-test. Qualitative analyses indicated that AI-supported flipped classroom practices positively influenced students' motivation, interest in the course, and personalized learning experiences. Furthermore, the model fostered collaboration by promoting interactive learning environments and enhanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills. However, students also reported challenges related to managing their time effectively within this instructional model. The study concludes that AI-supported flipped classroom applications hold promise for improving AI literacy and fostering active, student-centered learning in higher education. Nevertheless, challenges such as time management warrant further attention. It is recommended that future research explore the implementation of this model across diverse courses and educational contexts, investigate strategies to mitigate time management issues, and conduct comparative studies between AI-supported and traditional flipped classroom models to further elucidate the sources of observed positive perceptions.

EXAMINATION OF FOLK BELIEFS IN YOMRA DISTRICT ACCORDING TO FUNCTIONAL THEORY

    Kabak, Turgay

When looking at studies on folk beliefs in Turkey, we generally find two types of publications. The majority of research focus on revealing the origins of folk beliefs, I which identified through fieldwork, in old Turkish religion and mythology, and I establishing connections between the past and the present. The studies in the second group involve analyses of folk beliefs collected from one region of Turkey with those from other regions, or with folk beliefs from different regions of the Turkic world using a comparative method. There are scarcely any studies that address the functional dimension of folk beliefs and examine them from this perspective. The existing studies are quite narrow in scope. There is no study that extensively examines folk beliefs collected from a specific region according to the functional theory, as done in this study, which is one of the context-centered theories used by many researchers in the field of folklore. In this study, folk beliefs obtained through the field collection method from the district of Yomra, located in the Trabzon province of the Eastern Black Sea I region of Turkey, were analyzed according to functional theory. As a result of the I examination conducted, it has been found that the folk beliefs in the region have eleven functions which are: helping to protect public health, assisting public veterinary, protecting from evil spirits and beings, ensuring abundance and prosperity and protecting from famine, bringing good luck and averting bad luck, predicting and directing natural phenomena, transferring intangible cultural heritage, helping to make prophecy, establishing a connection with sacred, reconciling the old and the new, and securing social unity. Thus, the folk beliefs of a region have been examined for the first time with a holistic approach, from a functional perspective, and a model is developed that can be applied to other regions as well as folk beliefs will remain.
