- Derleme MakaleYalnız künye2016Nasreddin Hodja tales may inspire Turkish foreign language gifted and talented students to speak better English
Yurtbaşi, Metin
This study deals with a special methodology to meet the special needs of Turkish gifted and talented students (GTS) in terms of improving their English oral proficiency. Most GTS are known to have been born also "gifted in languages". Their language awareness shows by their "communicative skills, creative flair and arguing and reasoning". Their skill in using their native language reflect in their talents in foreign languages by their "strong desire to put language pieces together by themselves, by their creativity and imagination, picking up new words and structures very quickly, constantly asking questions and showing an intense interest in the cultural features of the new language they are learning." So benefitting from these talents they could easily be oriented to fine-tune their pronunciation and intonation in acceptable norms of phonetics. Turkish GTS having greater ease in learning new skills than their peers and are not usually satisfied with the usual methods and curriculum which do not fit to their vision of perfection at their own pace. The official foreign language training they are offered lacks the method by which they can learn to speak clearly and effectively, which is a skill they need to acquire in order to communicate orally with the rest of the world. Therefore they must be trained in new approaches to bring their proficiency on that line up to higher standards. In order to compensate this vital gap, such GTS need to learn first a special technique called "IPA transcription reading" and practice on relevant materials. In this innovative approach, students first acquire an awareness of the individual sounds and speech rhythm of the target language, i.e. English and practice on them by reading aloud texts written in IPA codes accompanied by their sound recordings and have their performance monitored by their speech instructions until perfection is reached. As for the drilling material to be chosen humor has been found great advantage, as it makes learning easier. The best known Turkish philosopher Nasreddin Hodja's satirical tales, traditionally a great source of inspiration for Turks, has been considered as a great source for such activities. By working hard on the transcriptions Hodja tales, students find not only to express themselves in English more clearly, understandably and fluently, their audience but also their conversation became wiser and more humourous. Because a sense of humor in conversation makes both speakers and listeners feel better as it smoothes out their interactions as a social lubricant. Those GTS grasping the correct norms of English pronunciation after much drilling on transcription are expected to speak English more efficiently and confidently than earlier and than their peers not undergone such training. The desired outcome will of course be achieved through constant practice and monitoring their performances.

Pat, Suat; Özen, Soner; Şenay, Volkan; Korkmaz, Şadan
In this paper, heavily C-doped GaN samples were deposited on glass and PET substrates by the thermionic vacuum arc (TVA) method, for the first time. Microstructure, surface and optical properties of the carbon-doped GaN samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and UV–Vis spectrophotometer. According to XRD pattern, fullerene (C60) structures were able to deposit in doped samples, for the first time. The fullerene structures were detected at heavily carbon-doped GaN. The obtained band gap changes of heavily carbon-doped GaN samples are determined. The band gap of CGaN on PET substrate decreased to a lower value, about 100 meV. The band gaps were shifted to the lowest wavelengths towards the edge of the UV region by heavily doped carbon. (002) and (004) peaks for GaN were also detected.

Dertli, Enes; Mercan, Emin; Arici, Muhammet; Yilmaz, Mustafa Tahsin; Sağdiç, Osman
A total of 249 Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) isolates were found in traditional Turkish wheat sourdoughs from Eastern Black Sea region of Turkey. Genotypic characterization of these isolates revealed the presence of 47 distinct LAB strains belonging to 11 different species: Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus paraplantarum, Lactobacillus curvatus, Lactobacillus rossiae, Lactobacillus sanfranciscensis, Lactobacillus brevis, Lactobacillus paralimentarius, Weissella paramesenteroides, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides and Weissella cibaria. The sourdough LAB microbiota differed depending on the sample origin and the collection period and heterofermentative LAB were dominant. The number of different species within a sourdough varied from 3 to 6 with the association of different hetero- and homofermentative LAB species. Exopolysaccharide (EPS) production characteristics of the isolates were determined and strain specific properties appeared to be important for the final EPS yields. Genes required for homopolysaccharide (gtf and lev) and heteropolysaccharide (epsA, epsB, p-gtf) production were PCR detected and several distribution patterns were observed. Results of this study confirmed the biodiversity of LAB species in traditional Turkish sourdough and highlighted the importance of EPS production in sourdough LAB strains.

Geçici, Birol; Korkmaz, Šadan; Özen, Soner; Šenay, Volkan; Pat, Suat
Paramelaconite (Cu4O3) is a metastable copper oxide. Metastable copper oxide thin films were deposited on glass substrates by reactive RF magnetron sputtering in argon (Ar) and oxygen (O2) gas mixture atmospheres. Ar/O2 gas ratios in the sputtering ambient were chosen as 1/1 and 1/9. The surface and optical properties were determined by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), atomic force microscope (AFM) and UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The XRD patterns of the samples exhibited single strong diffraction peaks at 35.39° and 35.49° , corresponding to the (202) peak of Cu4O3. The mean thickness values were measured as 100 nm and 80 nm for the films deposited at 1/1 and 1/9 Ar/O2 gas ratios, respectively. The samples showed low transmittance and high absorbance in the high frequency region.

Özen, Soner; Şenay, Volkan; Pat, Suat; Korkmaz, Şadan
The aim of this research is to investigate the optical and morphological properties of the InGaN thin films deposited onto amorphous glass substrates in two separate experiments with two different voltages applied between the electrodes, i.e. 500 and 600 V by means of the thermionic vacuum arc technique. This technique is original for thin film deposition and it enables thin film production in a very short period of time. The optical and morphological properties of the films were investigated by using field emission scanning electron microscope, atomic force microscope, spectroscopic ellipsometer, reflectometer, spectrophotometer, and optical tensiometer. Optical properties were also supported by empirical relations. The deposition rates were calculated as 3 and 3.3 nm/sec for 500 and 600 V, respectively. The increase in the voltage also increased the refractive index, grain size, root mean square roughness and surface free energy. According to the results of the wetting experiments, InGaN samples were low-wettable, also known as hydrophobic. SCANNING 38:14-20, 2016.

Ucurum, Metin; Malgir, Eda; Deligezen, Hamdi; Karaer, Necmettin; Avsar, Mustafa
Due to its low surface energy, easy dispersion, high homogeneity and whiteness, coated (modified) calcite has increasingly been used in many industries, particularly in the plastics. The demand for this product will most likely increase in the years to come. Surface modification of calcite with a fatty acid would lead to a great expansion of industrial applications. The color values of coated calcite products are the first quality parameter. Therefore, it is very important to monitor the variations in the color characteristics of the coated calcite products. It is well known that statistical process control (SPC) techniques have been widely used in the many industries. In the present study, the surface of micronized calcite was coated with stearic acid by a pin mill. X-R control graphics and process capability index were applied for monitoring variations in quality control based on color parameters (L*,a*and b*) for the pin mill plant. In addition, active ratio, particle size distribution, whiteness parameters, BET, FTIR, TGA-DTA and SEM were then determined on a coated calcite sample. The results show that the pin mill plant seems under control and the coating technology is very effective in modifying the surface of micronized calcite.products.

Daloglu, Ayse T.; Artar, Musa; Özgan, Korhan; Karakas, Ali İ.
The effect of soil-structure interaction on the optimum design of steel space frames is investigated using metaheuristic algorithms. Three-parameter elastic foundation model is used to incorporate soil-structure interaction. A computer program is developed in MATLAB interacting with SAP2000-OAPI for two way data flow in all optimization procedures. Optimum design of space frames is formulated according to LRFD-AISC (Load and Resistance Factor Design, American Institute of Steel Construction) specifications. The parameters of foundation model are obtained by using soil surface displacements. It is concluded that consideration of soil-structure interaction ends up with heavier frames, and method is applicable for practical purposes.

Cuce, Erdem; Cuce, Pinar Mert
A comprehensive review of vacuum glazing technology from state-of-the-art developments to future prospects has been presented. The review has been conducted in a thematic way in order to allow an easier comparison, discussion and evaluation of the findings. First, a thorough overview of historical development of vacuum glazing has been given. Then, numerous experimental, theoretical, numerical and simulation works on the scope have been evaluated and the characteristic results from the said works have been analyzed. Commercial vacuum glazing products in market have been assessed in terms of several performance parameters such as overall heat transfer coefficient, visible light transmittance, solar heat gain coefficient and cost. Techno-economic and environmental aspects of vacuum glazing technology have also been discussed. It can be concluded from the results that overall heat transfer coefficient of a vacuum glazing can be reduced up to 0.20 W/m2K through optimized integrations with low-e coatings. The incomparable U-value range of vacuum glazing enables significant mitigation in energy consumption levels and greenhouse gas emissions. Retrofitting 25.6 million homes in the UK with vacuum glazing can provide a carbon abatement of about 40 million tonnes a year, which is very promising.

Ağar, Berrin; Gençcelep, Hüseyin; Saricaoğlu, Furkan Türker; Turhan, Sadettin
The effect of sugar beet fiber (SBF) concentration on the rheological properties of meat emulsions was determined. In addition, texture profile analysis (TPA) of cooked meat emulsions was carried out to find a possible relationship between the dynamic rheological data and TPA parameters. All studied emulsions exhibited non-Newtonian, pseudoplastic behavior since apparent viscosity decreased with increasing shear rate. The Ostwald–de Waele model was successfully used to describe the flow properties of meat emulsions (R2 > 0.913). Emulsion systems were characterized as weak gel-like macromolecular dispersions with storage modulus (G′) much greater than loss modulus (G″). A modified Cox–Merz rule was applied by multiplying angular frequency with shift factors (αSF). Material stiffness parameter (Aα) calculated from complex modulus (G*) increased as SBF concentration increased. Significant correlations among the material stiffness data and TPA parameters were observed. It was concluded that TPA parameters could be predicted by using dynamic shear tests, and hence, this will make possible to save time and cost for meat processors when manufacturing a product with acceptable structural or textural characteristics.

LTO thin film was deposited for the first time on a glass microscope slide (MS) by RF magnetron sputtering technology. This method has been suitable for preparation of high-quality thin films. The surface properties of the produced film were determined by atomic force microscope (AFM). The surface of the produced film appeared smooth and homogeneous. LTO coated on MS had compact structure and low roughness. A UV-vis spectrophotometer was used to determine intensity of light passing through the samples. Thus, according to the results obtained the produced film was highly transparent. The refractive index of the LTO thin film was presented in a low MSE value by spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) and it was about 1.5. The optical band gap (Eg) was determined by the Tauc method. The produced LTO thin film exhibited a wide band gap semiconductor property with a band gap energy of about 2.95 eV. Finally, the surface free energy of the LTO thin film was calculated from the contact angle measurements using the Lewis acid-base, OWRK/Fowkes, Wu and Zisman methods.

- Derleme MakaleYalnız künye2016Scopus SJRQ1Toward multi-functional PV glazing technologies in low/zero carbon buildings: Heat insulation solar glass - Latest developments and future prospects
Cuce, Erdem
Heat insulation solar glass (HISG) is a recently developed multi-functional photovoltaic (PV) glazing technology to mitigate energy consumption of buildings and to provide optimum thermal comfort conditions to occupants. In essence, HISG represents an improved transparent amorphous silicon (a-Si) PV module prepared with several optimized coatings and structures. HISG differs from conventional PV glazing products by having some characteristic features such as thermal insulation, sound absorption, self-cleaning and notable energy saving. In addition, HISG has a 100% UV blocking rate and remarkably low shading coefficient, which provides desired lighting related thermal comfort conditions for indoor environments. HISG is also competitive with conventional double glazed products in market in terms of fabrication cost. In this respect, it is highly expected that HISG has a strong potential to dominate the fenestration market in the near future. In this research, a comprehensive review of HISG technology is presented. Power generation, thermal insulation, energy saving, self-cleaning, acoustic and aesthetic features of HISG are evaluated in detail through the state-of-The-art literature survey. Existing research projects on the scope and future prospects are also addressed within the scope of this study.

Cuce, Erdem; Cuce, Pinar Mert; Young, Chin-Huai
HISG (heat insulation solar glass) is a recently developed multi-functional glazing technology to mitigate energy consumption of buildings. HISG can generate electricity similar to conventional PV (photovoltaic) glazing products when exposed to sunlight, however it differs from them by having some extraordinary characteristic features such as thermal insulation, which is competitive with Argon filled triple glazed windows, acoustic comfort, remarkable energy saving potential and self-cleaning ability owing to TiO2 nano coating. Within the scope of this research, latest results from laboratory and in-situ testing of HISG are presented in terms of its key role in mitigating heating and cooling demand of buildings as well as clean energy generation. Lighting and thermal comfort related parameters such as shading coefficient, UV, IR and visible light intensity are also investigated through the tests conducted in real operating conditions. It is achieved from the results that instant electricity generation of HISG is 16% higher than that of standard PV glazing owing to its nano layer reflective film. Shading coefficient of HISG is only 0.136, which provides almost 80% reduction in solar heat gain compared to ordinary glazing. Indoor air temperature measured from HISG test house in summer time is very close to the ambient temperature, whereas it is found to be 14.7 °C higher in ordinary glass test house due to greenhouse effect. Annual heating and cooling demand tests indicate that HISG provides 38 and 48% energy saving in heating and cooling season, respectively.
