- MakaleYalnız künye2023Scopus SJRQ2An algorithmic application with flexible airspace approach
Kökhan, Ahmet; Kökhan, Serhan; Gökdalay, Meriç
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to develop an operational level decision support system model for air traffic controllers (ATCos) within the framework of the Flexible Use of Airspace (FUA) concept to enable more efficient use of airspace capacity. This study produces a systematic solution to the route selection process so that the ATCo can determine the most efficient route with an operational decision support system model using Dijkstra’s Shortest Path Algorithm. Design/methodology/approach: In this study, a new decision support system model for ATCos in decision-making positions was recommended and used. ATCos use this model as a main model for determining the shortest and safest route for aircraft as an operational-level decision support system. Dijkstra Algorithm, used in the model, is defined step by step and then explained with the pseudocode. Findings: It has been determined that when the FUA concept and DSS are used while the ATCo chooses a route, significant fuel, time and capacity savings are achieved in flight operations. Emissions resulting from the negative environmental effects of air transportation are reduced, and significant capacity increase can be achieved. The operational level decision support system developed in the study was tested with 55 scenarios on the Ankara–Izmir flight route compared to the existing fixed route. The results for the proposed most efficient route were achieved at 11.22% distance (nm), 9.36%-time (min) savings and 837.71 kg CO2 emission savings. Originality/value: As far as the literature is reviewed, most studies aimed at increasing airspace efficiency produce solutions that try to improve rather than replace the normal process. Considering the literature positioning of this study compared to other studies, the proposed model provides a new systematic solution to the problems that cause human-induced route inefficiency within the framework of the FUA concept.

Kaya, Yunus
This article presents a single-layer, ultra-thin and multifunctional polarization converter (PC) design using metasurface. The PC, which is proposed as a single layer, consists of a metal metasurface on the front side of a easily accessible FR-4 material and a metal termination on the back surface. The suggested PC features linear polarization (LP) characteristic within a frequency ranges of 5.21- 5.41 GHz and 7.53- 8.08 GHz in C-band, also 10.59- 10.84 GHz in X-band under normal incidence. It indicates the conversion performance of linear polarization to circular polarization (LP-CP) that has the properties of left-handed circular polarization (LHCP) in frequency range of 5.74–7 GHz in C-band and right-handed circular polarization (RHCP) in frequency range of 8.63- 10.15 GHz in X-band. Besides, the suggested PC provides more than 90% polarization conversion ratio (PCR) value in case of normal incidence (0∘) and over 80% PCR value in case of oblique incidence up to 45∘. Again, the suggested PC offers the same CP feature in two frequency regions where CP conversion takes place under normal incidence for angle of incidence up to 60∘. A prototype of suggested PC was produced, measured, and a good match was found between the results simulated via a commercial electromagnetic (EM) simulation program. Finally, the performance of suggested design is compared with existing studies in literature with its high aspects. In this context, the suggested PC may be useful for C- and X-band applications due to its simple structure, ultra-thin and compactness, low-cost, and performance of LP and CP conversion under wide oblique angles.

- MakaleYalnız künye2023Scopus SJRQ1A New Higher-Order Finite Element for Static Analysis of Two-Directional Functionally Graded Porous Beams
Turan, Muhittin; Adiyaman, Gokhan
A new higher-order finite element for the static analysis of two-directional functionally graded (2D FG) porous beams subjected to various boundary conditions based on parabolic shear deformation theory (PSDT) is presented. The main purpose of this study is to predict the deflections and stresses of 2D FG porous and non-porous beams with the help of the proposed finite element. Since a higher-order finite element with a third order polynomial is used, the deflections and stresses can be accurately and rapidly obtained even for short beams. In addition, the new higher-order element is free of shear locking phenomenon without requiring any shear correction factors. Three types of distribution functions were used for porosity in this study. To the author's knowledge, the sinusoidal uneven distribution function (FGP-3) is presented for the first time. The governing equations are derived by Lagrange’s principle using a parabolic shear deformation theory that considers normal and shear deformations. According to a power-law rule, the material change in the beam volume in both directions is defined. The dimensionless maximum transverse deflections, normal stresses, and shear stresses are obtained for various boundary conditions, gradation exponents (px, pz) in the x- and z-directions, porosity coefficient (e), porosity distribution (FGP-1, FGP-2, FGP-3), and the slenderness (L/h). This study's new higher-order finite element gives results compatible with the literature and it can be used to accurately find the deflections and stresses for the 2D FG non-porous or porous beams subjected to various boundary conditions.

Yilmaz, Galip; Colak, Murat; Uslu, Emin
Manufacturing high-quality casting parts with complex geometries requires high engineering skill and precision. One essential quality concern is isolated hot spots within the castings, often in thick sections. Each hot spot must be consistently fed or mitigated through directional solidification techniques. The impact of various mold sands and the geometry of chill parts on solidification direction was investigated using specialized casting and general-purpose simulation programs. A parametric optimization method was employed to analyze directional solidification to adjust the geometry of the chill parts. The results indicate that employing diverse mold sands to enhance cooling in the thick sections was a viable strategy for achieving directional solidification in parts where the feeding pathway is obstructed due to changes in cross-section. Furthermore, the study revealed that intricate details in the chill part’s geometry are not critical; however, a minimum volume (or weight) was necessary for adequate directional solidification. Lastly, an easily applicable mathematical model has been developed to determine the required volume of chill parts to ensure successful directional solidification.

Kamiloğlu, Aybike; Elbir, Tuğba; Dölek, Muzaffer; Eşrefoğlu, Emine Sedanur
The study aimed to evaluate the influence of different drying techniques (Convective and microwave drying) on beef meat's drying kinetics and color parameters. While drying rates with convective drying vary between.005 and.009 g water/g dry matter, it varies between.014 and.166 g water/g dry matter for microwave drying. Among the model proposed, for the conditions applied in the microwave and convective drying methods, the Midilli model gave a better fit. The Arrhenius-type equation calculated the activation energies of beef samples. Activation energies were 64.15 and 449.86 kJ/mol for convective and microwave drying, respectively. According to measured L*, a*, and b* values and calculated ΔE, C*, and h° values, convective drying at 80°C provided the closest color characteristics to fresh meat. Practical applications: Beef is a perishable food and storage conditions are very important. It is important to have information about the drying methods to be applied in the preservation of these foods in terms of process control. In this study, microwave drying and convective drying methods were examined and it was shown that microwave drying, which is one of the drying methods, shortens the processing time. However, in the convective drying method, color properties similar to the fresh product are provided. This research can provide theoretical guidance for further processing and preservation.

As, H.; Cabuk, R.; Norouzi, M.; Balci, G.A.; Ozkaya, O.
Aims: Maximal lactate steady state (MLSS) is accepted as the gold standard method to determine the upper boundary of heavy exercise domain, while critical power (CP) is one of the most practical ways to estimate the lower boundary of severe exercise domain. However, it has been recently discussed that the upper boundary of heavy-intensity exercise domain does not equal to lower boundary of severe-intensity exercise domain. Conversely, the best individual fit method (CPfit) has recently been suggested as an accurate estimation of CP. However, there has not been a comparative evaluation of CPfit versus MLSS. The aim of this study was, therefore, to focus on the comparison of CPfit with MLSS. Methods: Eleven well-trained male cyclists participated in this study. Following the determination of maximal oxygen uptake, MLSS was determined through the performance of standard 30-minute constant work rate exercises performed on separate days. Cyclists performed four constant-load exercises lasting 2–15 minutes on different days. The data were then fitted to mathematical models to obtain CPfit. Bland-Altman plot with 95% limits of agreement (LoA) was used to measure agreement between CPfit and MLSS. Results: According to the findings, CPfit overestimated the work rate corresponding to MLSS (300 ± 38 W vs. 265 ± 39 W; P = 0.001; effect size = 3.28). Bland-Altman results showed high LoA (14 to 55.9 W) and very high bias (bias = 35 ± 10.7 W; P = 0.001; r: 0.96) between CPfit and MLSS. Conclusion: CPfit was not identical for MLSS.

The aim of this study was to analyze the total phenolic content, phenolic profile, and antioxidant activity of honey, bee pollen, and propolis samples from Turkey's Black Sea Region. The total phenolic content of these bee products was found using Folin–Ciocalteu's method, and their antioxidant capacity was found using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and cupric ion reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) assays. Phenolic compounds of honey samples were characterized by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to a photodiode array detector and mass spectrometer (HPLC–DAD–ESI-MS), while phenolic compounds of bee pollen and propolis samples were quantified ultra-fast liquid chromatography (UFLC). The total phenolic values for honey, bee pollen and propolis were 6.32–18.21 mg GAE/100 g, 547.64–769.4 mg GAE/100 gr, and 6096.1–11,564 mg GAE/100 gr, respectively. DPPH and CUPRAC values of honey, pollen and propolis were 11.05–21.38% and 0.38–1.48 µmol Trolox/g; 24.67–38.63% and 0.03–0.05 mmol Trolox/g; 11.81–34.12% and 0.47–0.89 mmol Trolox/g, respectively. About 30 different phenolic compounds were identified as quantitative. Our findings have shown that all bee products examined in the study are found to contain gallic acid, naringenin, and caffeic acid. In terms of total phenolic content and antioxidant activity, the bee product extracts were ranked as follows: propolis > bee pollen > honey. The high concentration of phenolic compounds in propolis explains its remarkable antioxidant effect.

- MakaleYalnız künye2023Scopus SJRQ1Nectar honey from Turkey: crystallization and physicochemical profile
Ecem Bayram, Nesrin
Honey is a traditional food used by humans due to many therapeutic properties. Turkey is in a good position for the production of bee products, and honey is the most popular bee product in the country. In this study, the aim was to evaluate the quality parameters of 40 honey samples based on physicochemical parameters and to gain information about speed of crystallization. For this purpose, moisture (%), fructose (%), glucose (%), fructose + glucose (F + G, %), fructose/glucose (F/G), glucose/moisture (G/M), and proline (mg/kg) contents were determined in honey samples and cluster analysis was performed. When the sugar profile of honey samples is examined, F + G was 61.63–78.03%, F/G was 0.99–1.25, moisture content was 14.9–19.1%, and proline content was 384.41–1271.56 mg/kg. These results comply with national standards. Honey samples tend to crystallize quickly when their crystallization properties are evaluated based on F/G and G/M ratios. Consequently, the quality of honey differs according to the region from which it is produced and it is natural for honey to crystallize.

Taşyürek, Zeynep; Kodan, Hülya
Inclusive education is based on the idea that all individuals—regardless of individual characteristics and differences—should have access to education, a fundamental right granted to all. This study examines the relationship between pre-service teachers’ inclusive education awareness and self-efficacy and the impact of different variables that may affect this relationship. For this purpose, the Awareness Scale for Inclusive Education and the Teachers’ Self-Efficacy Perception of Inclusive Education Scale were used as data collection tools. The study was conducted through a correlational survey design to understand the relationship between pre-service teachers’ Awareness of Inclusive Education scores and Teacher’s Self-Efficacy Perception of Inclusive Education scores and determine the regulatory effect of gender and the departments in which the teachers studied on this relationship. The study sample included 360 pre-service teachers who completed the Special Education and Inclusion course. Data were analyzed using SPSS 24.0 and the Process Macro plugin. The results show a significant relationship between pre-service teachers’ awareness of inclusive education and self-efficacy perceptions. Results also indicate that while the regulatory effect of gender on the relationship between pre-service teachers’ inclusive education awareness and self-efficacy perceptions was not significant, the regulatory effect of the department they belonged to was substantial.
- MakaleYalnız künye2023Scopus SJRQ2Efficient bioreduction of 1-(furan-2-yl)ethanone into enantiomerically pure drug precursor by Lactobacillus paracasei BD101
Şahin, Engin
Asymmetric bioreduction catalyzed by biocatalyst have shown considerable potential in the preparation of chiral alcohols. (R)-1-(furan-2-yl)ethanol ((R)-2) can be used precursor in the synthesis of many naturally bioactive piperidine alkaloids such as (−)-Cassine, (−)-Spectaline, (−)-Carnavaline, Prosafrine and (−)- Prosafrinine. Moreover, (R)-2 a key chiral precursor in the production of α, β-unsaturated δ- lactones, which have antifungal, antibiotic, and cytotoxic effects on human tumor cells. However, the synthesis routes of (R)-2 still pose significant challenges in term of unsatisfactory enantiomeric excess (ee) and gram scale synthesis. In this study, Lactobacillus paracasei BD101 biocatalyst from boza, a cereal-based fermented beverage, for the asymmetric bioreduction of the 1-(furan-2-yl)ethanone (1). Following biocatalytic process optimization, (R)-2 was generated with >99% ee and 97% yield. In addition, 9.9 g of 1 was completely converted into (R)-2 on a gram scale (9.78 g, 97% isolated yield) in 48 h. This is the first report about the fabrication of enantiopure (R)-2 in high gram scale using biocatalyst. The optical purity of (R)-2 produced by asymmetric reduction with L paracasei BD101 was also noteworthy since it was the highest documented to date. This study provides an efficient green process for the biocatalytic synthesis of (R)-2.

- MakaleYalnız künye2023Scopus SJRQ1Investigation of vibration performance of pure active single and multi-feedback controls for a tall RC building
Uyar, Mehmet; Ergün, Mustafa
Structural control methods are applied to eliminate the structural damages caused by the vibrations in the buildings and to improve their dynamic behavior of them under dynamic lateral loads. In this paper, the pure active control performance of a tall building under the influence of earthquake records, in which the effective time duration is determined by considering the ARIAS energy distribution, is presented. The building's pure active control performance in the period when the earthquake records have the maximum effect on the structure is examined. Eleven earthquake records are selected to better evaluate the effect of vibration control performance. A genetic algorithm is used to determine the parameters of single and multi-feedback controllers, and its effect on the vibration eliminations at the top and all floors is studied. Also, the effect of displacement and velocity feedback on seismic vibration control is evaluated. To carry out the vibration control studies of the building, the mathematical model is extracted from the finite element model created in ANSYS and verified with finite element analysis. It is observed that the displacement value at a reference location on the building is reduced from 0.735 m to 0.019 m, 0.004 m, and 0.002 m, respectively, by the Proportional-Integral-Derivative, Direct Velocity Feedback, and Optimal controllers. The results show that the multi-feedback control is more effective than the single-feedback control application in reducing the vibration amplitudes at all floors in the pure active control system.

- MakaleYalnız künye2023Scopus SJRQ3Seismic response of adjacent buildings interconnected by viscous dampers considering soil-structure interaction
Hatipoğlu, Yavuz S.; Düzgün, Oğuz A.
The effectiveness of fluid viscous dampers (FVDs) on dynamic response mitigation of coupled two adjacent structures was investigated, considering soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects under earthquake excitation. A numerical procedure was employed to evaluate system response. The finite elements were used for the numerical treatment of the adjacent buildings and soil region. Viscous boundary conditions were used as special non-reflecting boundaries on the edges of finite soil region. According to the results, the FVDs were found to be very effective for dynamic response mitigation of the adjacent buildings, even if considering the soil medium. The results showed that the most affecting parameter on the system response was found to be soil type. It was also concluded that when adjacent structures coupled by FVDs, the maximum values of the roof displacements, the base shear forces, and the base bending moments could decrease up to around 50%. Changing in lateral stiffness of the one building has minor effects on the effectiveness of viscous dampers

- MakaleYalnız künye2023Scopus SJRQ2The melatonin agonist ramelteon attenuates bleomycin-induced lung fibrosis by suppressing the NLRP3/TGF-Β1/HMGB1 signaling pathway
Aydin, Pelin; Aksakalli-Magden, Zeynep B.; Civelek, Maide S.; Karabulut-Uzuncakmak, Sevgi; Mokhtare, Behzad; Ozkaraca, Mustafa; Alper, Fatih; Halici, Zekai
Purpose: The possible effects of ramelteon, a melatonin receptor agonist on bleomycin-induced lung fibrosis were analyzed via transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1), the high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) and Nod-like receptor pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) which are related to the fibrosis process. Materials and methods: Bleomycin (0.1 mL of 5 mg/kg) was administered by intratracheal instillation to induce pulmonary fibrosis (PF). Starting 24 h after bleomycin administration, a single dose of ramelteon was administered by oral gavage to the healthy groups, i.e. PF + RM2 (pulmonary fibrosis model with bleomycin + ramelteon at 2 mg/kg) and PF + RM4 (pulmonary fibrosis model with bleomycin + ramelteon at 4 mg/kg) at 2 and 4 mg/kg doses, respectively. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (real-time PCR) analyses, histopathological, and immunohistochemical staining were performed on lung tissues. Lung tomography images of the rats were also examined. Results: The levels of TGF-β1, HMGB1, NLRP3, and interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β) mRNA expressions increased as a result of PF and subsequently decreased with both ramelteon doses (p < 0.0001). Both doses of ramelteon partially ameliorated the reduction in the peribronchovascular thickening, ground-glass appearances, and reticulations, and the loss of lung volume. Conclusions: The severity of fibrosis decreased with ramelteon application. These effects of ramelteon may be associated with NLRP3 inflammation cascade.

Hasar, Ugur Cem; Kaya, Yunus; Ozturk, Hamdullah; Ertugrul, Mehmet; Ramahi, Omar Mustafa
An effective microwave method is developed for extracting electromagnetic properties of bianisotropic metamaterial (MM) slabs. As a non-iterative method, it utilizes only the one-port (air-backed and metal-backed MM slab) scattering (S-) parameter measurements. This is a useful feature especially for vector network analyzers, such as MS46131A, MS46121B, and R60, performing only one-port S-parameter measurements. Electromagnetic properties of a bianisotropic MM slab formed by C-shaped resonators are measured by an X-band (8.2–12.4 GHz) rectangular waveguide setup. The effect of any gap between the short-circuit termination for metal-backed measurements and the end of the MM slab on extracted electromagnetic properties is also examined for evaluating the possible error for proposed method.

Indole has been known as a key heterocyclic motif in the development of new structures for both chemical and biological properties. In this current study, a new range of indole-7-carbohydrazides has been successfully synthesized starting from the readily available 3-phenyl and 2,3-diphenyl 4,6-dimethoxyindoles. The structures of the novel compounds were confirmed by utilizing 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FT-IR, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and single crystal X- ray diffraction techniques. In addition, the indole-7-carbohydrazides showed promising antioxidant results in preliminary screens. Some of the new compounds generated from dimethoxy indoles were also screened for their anticancer activity against SH-SHY5Y (human neuroblastoma), AGS (human gastric adenocarcinoma), and MDA-MB-231 (human breast adenocarcinoma) cell lines. The results revealed that the compound 12 was the promising candidate, showing cytotoxic effects on both neuroblastoma, stomach, and breast cancer cells.

Microwave techniques, as an indirect approach, can be applied for analyzing water content in honey by way of permittivity measurements. However, these techniques require proper calibration to accurately perform such indirect evaluation. Improper calibration standards used in this calibration process could naturally result in a reduction in the accuracy and thus the performance of dielectric characterization using microwaves. Self-calibrating microwave techniques can reduce the effects of imprecise standards and thus improve the performance of microwave measurements by bypassing the requirement of calibration standards. In this study, we develop a self-calibrating microwave measurement technique to determine the relative permittivity of honey samples and implement binary mixing models to predict adulteration levels of water-adulterated honey. From this implementation, it is observed that the parallel-capacitance mixing model could efficiently be applied to determine the concentration of water adulteration by examining the differences between absolute values of the real parts of the measured and predicted complex permittivities of adulterated honey.
