Yllmaz, Demet; Allm, Bünyamin; Akkuş, Tuba; Güzeldir, Betül; Akdemir, A.O.; Ekinci, A.; Han, I.; Oztekin, A.; Set, E.; Dadasoglu, F.

The energy absorption buildup factors (EABF) have been calculated for some thermoluminescent dosimetric materials (Al2O3 and SiO2) in the energy region 0.015-15MeV up to the penetration depth of 40 mean free paths (mfp). Also, kerma relative to air has been determined for these materials. It is observed that the energy absorption buildup factors and kerma relative to air depend on the photon energy and chemical content. Also, the energy absorption build up factors are found the highest in intermediate energy whereas the lowest in low- as well as high energies.

Medium Access Control Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks with Ambient Energy

    Kosunalp, Selahattin; Tabakcioglu, Mehmet Baris

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have recently been a popular research area with a broad range of applications. One of the most significant constraints of WSNs is energy limitation of sensor nodes. Therefore, energy-efficiency has been considered as primarily design criterion in many medium access control (MAC) protocols developed. In order to solve the issue of limited-energy sources, various recent protocols have focused on energy harvesting from surrounding environment, such as solar, wind and vibration energy, resulting in providing unlimited energy source. Ambient energy exhibits a characteristic of unlimited energy source but not available always due to environmental changes. The focus is now being placed on effective utilization of the time-varying ambient energy. This study aims to provide a review of recently proposed MAC protocols for energy-harvesting WSNs describing their operating principles and underlying features.

Technological developments and changes in how learning is understood have not only changed learning environments, but also how educational materials are developed. Infographics, one of the materials that are becoming increasingly more popular in learning environments, have nowadays become quite commonplace. Demonstrating the understanding of those who design such instructional materials is important with respect to the organisation of learning processes. In this study, we devised a questionnaire that aims to demonstrate the understanding infographic designers have of infographic design. A total of 94 students from the Department of Computer and Instructional Technologies Education of the Kazim Karabekir Faculty of Education took part in this study conducted during the fall semester of the 2013-2014 academic year. The participants were given a questionnaire consisting of 41 items that enquired about the readers' views regarding infographic design. The collected data were assessed using Principal Component Analysis. Based on the analysis results, a questionnaire form consisting of 27 items and 8 factors (Understanding of Design, Design Process, Copyrights, Introduction, Readability, Sharing, References, Development) was developed.

Yildirim, Serkan; Çelik, Embiya; Yildirim, Gurkan; Kaban, Abdullatif; Gunduz, HB; Masal, E; Caliskan, H

Educational materials are commonly used to assist with communication during learning. One of the ways to determine the use of educational materials and their contribution to the learning process is to ask students for their opinions. Student opinions provide useful information regarding various objectives such as making both the learning process and resources more effective, bringing about the necessary improvements and organising the teaching process. In this study, we developed a questionnaire for determining the opinions of information graphics (infographics) readers on information graphics prepared for teaching purposes. This study was conducted in the fall semester of the 2013-2014 academic year with the participation of 59 students from the Department of Computer and Instructional Technologies Education of the Kazim Karabekir Faculty of Education. The students were provided with a questionnaire consisting of 29 items that inquired their opinions on infographics. The collected data were assessed using Principal Component Analysis. Based on the analysis results, a second questionnaire consisting of 23 items and six factors (Learnability, Selection Preferences, Sharing, Basic Presentation Structure, Memorability, and Role in the Learning Process) was developed. According to the study results, the students considered infographics as highly instructive, and described that they help ensure a more lasting learning experience.

Effect of natural aging on RT and HSR superplasticity of ultrafine grained Zn-22Al alloy

Demirtas, Muhammet; Purcek, Gencaga; Yanar, Harun; Zhang, Zhenjun; Zhang, Zhe-Feng; Sato, E.; Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, 3-1-1 Yoshinodai, Chuo, Sagamihara, Kanagawa, 252-5210; Itoh, G.; Kobayashi, J.; Department of Mechanical Engineering, Ibaraki University, 4-12-1 Nakanarusawa, Hitachi, 316-8511

Zn–22Al alloy was processed using a well-designed two-step equal channel angular extrusion/pressing (ECAE/P), and ultrafine-grained (UFG) microstructure with 200 nm grain size was achieved. UFG Zn-22Al was subjected to long-term (up to 60 days) aging at room temperature (RT) and it was seen that natural aging caused limited grain growth in the microstructure. Grain sizes of about 300 nm, 350 nm and 350 nm were measured after 15, 30 and 60 days aging, which mean that UFG Zn-22Al alloy has a good microstructural stability at RT up to 60 days. ECAPed Zn-22Al alloy showed a maximum elongation of about 400% at a high strain rate of 5×10-2 s-1 and maximum elongation decreased with increasing grain size. Elongation to failures of ~375% and ~350% were obtained with the samples having 300 nm and 350 nm grain sizes, respectively. In addition, natural aging slightly decreased the strain rate at which superplastic region formed. While the maximum elongation occurred at the strain rate of 5×10-2 s-1 in ECAPed UFG alloy, it took place at lower strain rate of 1×10-2 s-1 after aging for all time periods. Also, flow stress of the alloy increased with increasing grain size during natural aging.

Investigation of the surface free energy of the ITO thin films deposited under different working pressure

Özen, Soner; Şenay, Volkan; Pat, Suat; Korkmaz, Şadan; Akkus, B.; Dogan, G.S.; Mutlu, R.B.C.; Yalcin, L.S.; Oktem, Y.

This study discusses the influence of working pressure on the surface energy of the ITO thin films produced by radio frequency magnetron sputtering method. Optical tensiometer (Attension Theta Lite) is used for evaluating wetting behavior of the water droplet on the film surface and Equation of State method was selected to determine surface free energy for this study. Equation of state method does not divide the surface tension into different components such as polar, dispersive, acid-base. It is calculated the surfaces' free energy measuring the contact angle with a single liquid. The surface free energy value was in the range of 15-31 mN/m. Also, the transmittances were determined in the wavelength range between 200 and 1000 nm using the UNICO 4802 UV-Vis double beam spectrophotometer. Transmittances of the produced ITO thin films are greater than %70 in the visible range.

Exergy analysis of a combined power and cooling cycle

    Karaali, R.

Ammonia-water power cycles are important for efficient utilization of low temperature heat sources such as geothermal, solar, waste heat sources, etc. For some special conditions ammonia-water power cycle is an important and economical option. This paper presents an exergetic analysis of a combined power and cooling cycle that uses ammonia-water mixture as working fluid. Such cycles, use solar or geothermal energy or waste heat energy from a conventional power cycle. Ammonia-water power cycle can be used as independent cycles to provide power output and cooling. For a range (25-55 Bar) of boiler pressure the performance of the combined power and cooling cycle is investigated. The exergy of the boiler is very low compared to its energy. There is a boiling process and a heat transfer process at low temperature, both of which destruct the energy given to the boiler, so that the energy efficiency is low; however the exergy efficiency is higher than the energy efficiency. Increasing the turbine inlet pressure decreases the energy and exergy efficiencies.

Karakaş, Zeynep Karcioǧlu; Boncukçuoǧlu, Recep; Karakaş, Ibrahim H.; Durak, R.; Tuzemen, S.

In this study, it was investigated the effects of the used fuels on structural, morphological and magnetic properties of nanoparticles in nanoparticle synthesis with microwave assisted combustion method with an important method in quick, simple and low cost at synthesis of the nanoparticles. In this aim, glycine, urea and citric acid were used as fuel, respectively. The synthesised nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmet-Teller surface area (BET), and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) techniques. We observed that fuel type is quite effective on magnetic properties and surface properties of the nanoparticles. X-ray difractograms of the obtained nanoparticles were compared with standard powder diffraction cards of NiFe2O4 (JCPDS Card Number 54-0964). The results demonstrated that difractograms are fully compatible with standard reflection peaks. According to the results of the XRD analysis, the highest crystallinity was observed at nanoparticles synthesized with glycine. The results demonstrated that the nanoparticles prepared with urea has the highest surface area. The micrographs of SEM showed that all of the nanoparticles have nano-crystalline behaviour and particles indication cubic shape. VSM analysis demonstrated that the type of fuel used for synthesis is highly effective a parameter on magnetic properties of nanoparticles.

Thermodynamic analysis of a cascade refrigeration system

    Karaali, R.

There is a need for cooling by using the waste heat energy in food industry. Absorption cycles can be driven by waste thermal, geothermal, solar or industrial processes energies. In this study, cascade refrigeration system is thermodynamically modeled, and analyzed by using first law of thermodynamics, and exergy method. Thermodynamic properties such as pressure, temperature, entropy, enthalpy, exergy, mass flow rate in each stream are calculated for 50, 75, 100?C and for 0.8, 1.0, and 1.5 MPa pump pressure. A computer program is used that was prepared in FORTRAN by the author for the analyses. It is found that the compression-absorption cascade cooling cycle is appropriate for most of the kind of waste heat applications. Increase of the generator inlet heat temperature increases the generator inlet heat, the absorber outlet heat and the condenser 2 outlet heat energies and decreases the coefficient of performance of the absorption and the overall cycles. The generator heat decreases with increase of the pump pressure. Also increase of the pump pressure decreases the coefficient of performance of the absorption and the overall cycles. Increase of the pump pressure and the generator temperature decreases the exergetic coefficient of performance. Increase of the generator temperature and pump pressure increases the generator inlet exergy. It is concluded that increase of the generator temperature and the pump pressure increases the total destructed exergy of the cycle.
