- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ2Behind the Scenes: A Critical Perspective on GenAI and Open Educational Practices
Aksoy, Dilara Arzugül; Kursun, Engin
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a rapidly evolving field that is influencing every aspect of life. Generative AI (GenAI) as a sub-branch of AI is used to create content in various formats such as text, images, video, and audio. This paper discusses the implications of GenAI for Open Educational Practices (OEP), highlighting the potential affordances and challenges. GenAI can address the challenges within the OEP by leveraging openness and ethical use. GenAI’s “generative” nature and human-like language capability can provide resources such as course material, activities, examples, questions, assessment, and learning outcomes in the context of OEP. With machine learning and deep learning infrastructure, it can support the discoverability and accessibility of open resources by increasing the metadata quality. GenAI can automatically score student assignments, answer their questions, and provide instant feedback to address the lack of interaction and feedback that arises due to the large number of students, especially in massive open online courses (MOOC). On the other hand, GenAI brings challenges such as data privacy and security, copyright, biased outputs, and the generation of false information. The conclusions emphasize the importance of a nuanced approach that considers not only the advantages but also the risks associated with adopting GenAI in the OEP world. Researching and developing how to apply these technologies to education is important to shape the future of education.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ3Notes on the Old Turkish Verb arka- “to seek…” and Its Semantic Field; [ESKİ TÜRKÇE ARKA- “ARAMAK…” FİİLİ VE ANLAM ALANI ÜZERİNE NOTLAR]
Güzel, Ferdi
The verb arka-, whose meaning was only recorded in Old Turkish as “to search, to investigate”, has many unrecorded meanings. Some of these meanings are recorded in later historical and contemporary dialects. Some of them can be identified thanks to the derivatives of the verb. Although the connection between some derivatives of the verb arka- has been mentioned in a few studies, these words have not been associated with each other in most of the studies. According to the data in historical and contemporary dialects, it is understood that the verb arka- has the following meanings: 1. to pass through. 2. to pass between, to extend or place an object between two things. 3. to support, help. 4. to lie diagonally or transversely between two things. 5. to line up in a row. 6. to thread, weave. 7. to send. 8. to follow. 9. to seek, to investigate. The verb arka- is derived from the verb Old Turkish *ar- “to pass through”, with the suffix -kA-, which carries an intensifying function. The core meaning of the verb *ar- and arka- is the same. All meanings of the verb have emerged from the meaning of “to pass through”. It has not been clarified whether the verb ara-, which survives in the Oghuz group Turkish dialects today, and the verb arka- which is recorded as Oghuz in DLT, are the same verb, due to the fact that the *argaintermediate form in the development of arka- > *arga- > ara- has not been detected in any Turkish dialect to date. In addition, in dialects that preserve long vowels, the first vowel of the verb ara- is long, while in derivatives of the verb arka- such as arkış, argaç, the first vowel is short. For these reasons, it does not seem possible to determine with certainty whether the verbs arka- and ara- are the same verb.

We study the quasilinear attraction-repulsion chemotaxis system of parabolic-elliptic type ut = ∆u−χ∇·(u∇υ)+ξ∇·(u∇ω) with nonlinear production 0 = ∆υ −βυ +αus, 0 = ∆ω −δω +γur, subject to the homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions in a bounded domain Ω ⊂ ℝN (N ≥ 3) with smooth boundary. It is proved that for every α, β, δ, γ, χ, ξ > 0 and s ≥ N2,r > N−2/N s, there exists ξ∗ > 0 such that if ξ > ξ∗ and any sufficiently regular initial datum u0(x) ≥ 0, then the model has a unique global classical solution (u, υ, ω), which is bounded in Ω × (0, ∞).

In mushroom cultivation, it is important to be aware of the impact of the growing substrate. This study investigated the cultivation of various oyster mushrooms, including Pleurotus ostreatus, Pleurotus citrinopileatus, and Pleurotus djamor, on different types of wood sawdust. Total phenolic content, condensed tannins, antioxidant activity by ferric reducing antioxidant power assay, protein and sensory evaluations were performed in cultivated oyster mushrooms. Wood sawdust of Fagus orientalis (oriental beech), Alnus glutinosa (alder), Castanea sativa (chestnut), and Juglans regia (walnut) were used as substrate for studied mushroom type, separately. Because champignon (Agaricus bisporus) was the most consumed mushroom, it was used as control sample. Methanolic extracts of dried mushrooms were used to measure bioactive characteristics. Pleurotus ostreatus samples cultivated in Alnus glutinosa (alder) sawdust substrate had the highest antioxidant activity. The lowest antioxidant activity values were found in Pleurotus djamor cultivated in Juglans regia (walnut) wood sawdust substrate. The highest protein content was measured in Agaricus bisporus as 13,84 %. The other highest protein concentration was found in Pleurotus ostreatus cultivated in Alnus glutinosa (alder) sawdust substrate, at 13,75 %. The lowest protein concentration belonged to Pleurotus citrinopileatus cultivated in Fagus orientalis (oriental beech) sawdust substrate as 9,86 %. While Agaricus bisporus and Pleurotus ostreatus had the highest overall appreciation score, Pleurotus citrinopileatus had the lowest. It has been observed that the substrate content has an important impact on chemical and sensory properties of the oyster mushrooms. This study provides knowledge on the chemical and sensory characteristics of three different Pleurotus mushroom species cultivated on different composts.

Güven Akdeniz, Dilşad
Is children’s literature only beneficial to children? Or do the benefits of children’s literature also extend to the knowledge and mathematical skills of the teachers who employ it and reflect on it? This study seeks to investigate the role of picturebooks on the mathematical knowledge of preschool teacher candidates. For this purpose, in-depth examinations of how picturebooks can be used in teaching preschool mathematics and children’s literature. As well as the changes in the content knowledge of the teacher candidates, were done by conducting focus group interviews with teacher candidates. This is a qualitative case study consisting of focus group discussions in which high-level knowledge sharing and production can be achieved through interaction and associations. In the research, 11 picturebooks were discussed, and 8 teacher candidates participated in 6 focus group interviews lasting a total of 338 min throughout a 7 week period. The study’s findings have demonstrated that through children’s literature, teacher candidates’ misconceptions about measuring length can be revealed and eliminated without the need for another source, with discussions based on consciously and systematically selected picturebooks. Thus, it can be said that picturebooks act as a catalyst for the studies that aim to enhance the mathematical content knowledge of teacher candidates. The study has also observed that picturebooks can comprehensively address the fundamental concepts of length measurement.

A chronic microbial infection that is mediated by the host's immune system is the cause of periodontal disease. As the world's population grows, phytotherapy is a therapeutic strategy that makes use of a renewable resource that can provide less costly medicines. This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effects of eugenol administration on periodontitis by examining the effects of eugenol at different doses biochemically, histopathologically, and radiologically in rats with experimental periodontitis. Thirty-two Sprague Dawley male rats were divided into four groups: 1. the healthy control group (CG), 2. The experimental periodontitis group (PG), 3. The experimental periodontitis+10 mg/kg eugenol group (EG10), and 4. the experimental periodontitis+20 mg/kg eugenol group (EG20). Alveolar bone loss was measured using micro-CT imaging. The TNF-α, IL-6, leptin, asprosin, and apelin levels were analyzed in the serum samples of rats. Histological and immunohistochemical analyses were performed. The data were analyzed statistically. The serum TNF-α, IL-6, leptin, asprosin, and apelin levels were found to be statistically significantly lower in the eugenol-applied groups (EG10 and EG20) than in the PG (p < 0.05). There was a statistically significant difference in the TNF-α, IL-6, leptin, asprosin, and apelin levels between the EG10 and EG20 (p < 0.05). In the measurements made using micro-CT imaging, alveolar bone loss was found to be at the lowest FR1 level, and in histopathological analysis, the least inflammation was observed in the EG20. It was concluded that the application of 20 mg/kg eugenol in rats with experimental periodontitis was a safe dose, was beneficial in alleviating bone loss, and had a positive effect on the healing process.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Olive Oil Production Forecasts for a Macro Perspective during 2024–2027
Kurtoğlu, Seval; Uzundumlu, Ahmet Semih; Gövez, Elif
Olive oil, which is part of the Mediterranean diet, is one of the most important foods for a healthy diet. The number of countries that produce these important foods has not increased significantly over the years. However, the number of exporting countries tripled in the same period. This study aimed to predict the countries that will lead olive oil production globally between 2024 and 2027 by using the production data from the period 1961–2023. The data were analyzed using the ARMA model in the statistical program SAS. According to the results for the 10-year period of 1961–1970, there were 25–26 olive-oil-producing countries in the world. Approximately 31.26% of olive oil production was in Italy, 28.32% in Spain, 13.14% in Greece, 7.80% in Turkey, and 5.74% in Portugal. According to the average production for the period 2024–2027, it is estimated that 34 and 35 countries will produce olive oil, with 29.93%, 9.08%, 9.06%, 9.00%, and 8.90% of the world’s production provided by Spain, Greece, Turkey, Morocco, and Italy, respectively. These five countries account for 65.96% of the world’s production level. The estimation results of this study found that there are many exporting countries other than the leading producer countries thus showing that the producer countries do not have a forceful marketing concept, and therefore intermediaries emerge. For this reason, producer countries such as Turkey, Tunisia, and Morocco, which are not very competent in marketing, will have more say in the market by using their resources more effectively and making more effective strategies with an improved production and marketing approach.

Doxorubicin is a powerful chemotherapy medicine that is frequently used to treat cancer, but because of its extremely destructive side effects on other healthy cells, its applications have been severely constrained. With the aim of using lower therapeutic doses of doxorubicin while maintaining the same anti-cancerous activity as those of higher doses, the present study designs nano-encapsulation of doxorubicin by acrylamide grafted melanin as core and acrylic acid grafted flax seed gum as shell (DOX@AAM-g-ML/AA-g-FSG-NPs) for studies in-vivo and in-vitro anticancer activity. For biological studies, the cytotoxicity of DOX@AAM-g-ML/AA-g-FSG-NPs was examined on a cancerous human cell line (HCT-15) and it was observed that DOX@AAM-g-ML/AA-g-FSG-NPs exhibited very high toxicity towards HCT-15. In-vivo investigation in colon cancer-inflicted rat model also showed that DOX@AAM-g-ML/AA-g-FSG-NPs showed better anticancer activity against cancerous cells as compared to free doxorubicin. The drug release behavior of DOX@GML-GFS-NPs was studied at several pH and maximum drug release (95 %) was recorded at pH -7.2, and kinetic data of drug release was follows the Higuchi (R2 = 0.9706) kinetic model. Our study is focussed on reducing the side effects of doxorubicin by its nano-encapsulation in acrylamide grafted melanin as core and acrylic acid grafted flax seed gum that will also enhance its efficiency.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ1Removal kinetics of vinyl acetate under aerobic and anoxic conditions in a batch bioreactor
Yalçın Çelik, Beste; Nuhoğlu, Alper; Kul, Sinan; İrdemez, Şahset
Vinyl acetate is a volatile organic compound widely used in the chemical industry, and there is a need for effective and economic removal of this volatile organic compound from wastewater and waste gases in chemical industries. This study aims to determine the biological treatability of vinyl acetate both under aerobic and anoxic conditions using mixed cultures obtained from a wastewater treatment plant. Considering the previous studies in the literature, testing the biodegradability of vinyl acetate under both aerobic and anoxic conditions, together with evaluating the effect of other mechanisms, such as adsorption and volatilization, on the removal of vinyl acetate, can be regarded as the prominent part of this study. Wastewater containing artificially prepared vinyl acetate was treated in a batch bioreactor, and performance and kinetic constants were investigated. Aerobic treatment under batch conditions conformed to the Haldane biokinetic equation, and the biokinetic constants of μmax, Ks, and Ki were calculated as 0.66 h−1, 19.67 mg L−1 and 50.56 mg L−1, respectively. Anoxic treatment under batch conditions conformed to the Monod biokinetic equation, and the biokinetic constants of μmax and Ks were calculated as 0.31 h−1 and 33.88 mg L−1, respectively. Experiments revealed that vinyl acetate was not volatile, and its adsorption and biological treatment performances were 28% and 72%, respectively. The mixed culture had a very high performance for removing vinyl acetate under batch operating conditions. The primary mechanism of vinyl acetate removal was found to be biological treatment.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ2A Dual-Band Terahertz Metamaterial Absorber Using an All-Metal Aluminum Hexagonal Metasurface Structure for Sensing of Cancerous Cells
Teber, Ahmet
This article proposes a dual-band terahertz metamaterial absorber (TMA) where all components of the designed structure are made of aluminum (optical) material. Unlike the metal-dielectric-metal structures typically found in the literature, the proposed structure has a lightweight material that does not contain a sandwich structure. Thus, the structure greatly simplifies the production process and reduces the cost. The results of electromagnetic and equivalent circuit simulations are compared based on the S11 parameters (in dB), resulting in good agreement of findings by CST and ADS, respectively. The proposed TMA operates in dual frequency bands at 1.902 THz (f1) and 1.976 THz (f2), with strong absorption of 98.17% and 99.05%, respectively. The quality factors (Q-factors) corresponding to these resonant frequencies are 240.15, (f1) and 181.61, (f2). When the refractive index (RI) of the medium surrounding the TMA varies, the absorption peaks shift accordingly. The detection properties of the proposed TMA are examined as the RI of the surrounding medium is varied primarily between 1.34 and 1.39 with an increase of 0.01 for biomedical applications. The corresponding sensitivities of two resonance peaks are 0.794 THz/RIU and 0.971 THz/RIU, respectively. Since many samples, such as human blood, basal/breast/cervical cells, and cancerous cells, are found in this RI range, the proposed TMA sensor can be used as a viable biosensor in the identification of biological samples for real-world applications. Turhal, Uğur; Günay Yılmaz, Asuman; Nabiyev, Vasif
Biometric data (facial, voice, fingerprint, and retinal scans, for example) are widely used in identification due to their unique and irreversible nature. Facial recognition technologies are employed in a wide range of applications due to their contactless nature and convenience. However, technological advancements and the availability of access to personal information have rendered these biometric systems susceptible to attacks utilizing fake faces. As a result, the issue of anti-spoofing has emerged as a critical one in the field of facial recognition. This study proposes a joint face presentation attack (FPA) detection method based on face-weighted multi-color multi-level LBP features extracted from the combination of device-dependent HSV and device-independent L*a*b* color spaces. The facial images were converted to HSV and L*a*b* color spaces. Three levels of regional LBP features were extracted from each color channel and then concatenated. Finally, a Multi-Color Multi-Level LBP (MCML_LBP) feature vector was obtained. In addition, the Face Weighted MCML_LBP feature vector was produced (FW_MCML_LBP) by adding the LBP histogram extracted from the central region of the normalized image. The feature vectors are used to train an SVM classifier after reducing their size using PCA. Twenty-five different test scenarios were subjected to experimentation on the CASIA and Replay-Attack databases. 2.11% EER and 0.19% HTER were achieved on CASIA (Overall) and Replay-Attack (Grandtest) databases, respectively, using the L*a*b color space and the proposed feature extraction method. The results of the study showed that the proposed method was successful in FPA detection compared to the state-of-the-art methods.

Cho, Wonjun; Oh, Heeseung; Abd El-Aty, A.M.; Özten, Ömer; Jeong, Ji Hoon; Jung, Tae Woo
Interleukin-27 (IL-27) is a recently discovered cytokine that has been implicated in inflammatory and metabolic conditions, such as atherosclerosis and insulin resistance. However, the mechanisms by which IL-27 attenuates hepatic lipid accumulation in hyperlipidemic conditions and counteracts endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, a known risk factor for impaired hepatic lipid metabolism, have not been elucidated. This in vitro study was designed to examine the effect of IL-27 on hepatic lipid metabolism. The study included the evaluation of lipogenesis-associated proteins and ER stress markers by Western blotting, the determination of hepatic lipid accumulation by Oil Red O staining, and the examination of autophagosome formation by MDC staining. The results showed that IL-27 treatment reduced lipogenic lipid deposition and the expression of ER stress markers in cultured hepatocytes exposed to palmitate. Moreover, treatment with IL-27 suppressed CD36 expression and enhanced fatty acid oxidation in palmitate-treated hepatocytes. The effects of IL-27 on hyperlipidemic hepatocytes were attenuated when adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) or 3-methyladenine (3 MA) were inhibited by small interfering RNA (siRNA). These results suggest that IL-27 attenuates hepatic ER stress and fatty acid uptake and stimulates fatty acid oxidation via AMPK/autophagy signaling, thereby alleviating hepatic steatosis. In conclusion, this study identified IL-27 as a promising therapeutic target for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

- MakaleYalnız künye2024Scopus SJRQ2Optimization, Characterization, and Carbon Footprint Analysis of Alkali Activated Waste Tuff and Fly Ash Mixtures for Deep Mixed Columns
Kamiloğlu, Hakan Alper; Yilmaz, Fatih
Deep soil mixing (DSM) applications are one of the widely known soil stabilization techniques which can be applied to a wide range of soil types. Cement and lime are the major materials used as binders for DSM applications. However, as conventional binders lead to emit a large amount of CO2 during production, eco-friendly binders suitable for DSM applications have become prominent. Alkali-activated materials are good alternatives to conventional binders. This study was intended to investigate the usability of zeolite rich tuff wastes as an alkali-activated binder in DSM columns. Within this scope, the waste tuff and C-type fly ash mixture were used as an alkali-activated binder, and 10 M NaOH solution was used as an activator. Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed in experimental design to determine optimum components to obtain maximum unconfined compression strength and investigate the interaction between stabilization agents. From the RSM analysis the optimum ratios of activator (X1), waste tuff (X2), and precursor (X3) were determined as; X1 = 0.251, X2 = 0.548, and X3 = 0.538 for maximum UCS. UCS, mineralogical and microstructural characterization (XRF, XRD, SEM, EDX, FTIR) was performed for the DSM samples prepared considering the optimized components. It was determined that the UCS values of the 3, 7, and 28-day cured samples stabilized by considering the optimum values gave UCS values approximately 3 to 5 times higher than the lower limit values recommended by FHWA. As a result of mineralogical and microstructural investigation, the reason for the strength increase in the samples can be attributed to the formation of geopolymeric gel between the soil particles by tuff waste and fly ash activated with alkaline activator. Carbon footprint analyses were performed for 1m3 DSM columns produced with alkali-activated binders and ordinary Portland cement (OPC). From the analyses it was seen that the carbon footprint of the DSM column produced using alkali activated binders is lower than that of the DSM column obtained with OPC. After the general evaluation of the study, it is seen that the hypothesis that waste tuff can be used as environmentally safe alkali-activated binders instead of traditional binders is supported.

This research aims to create a model that elucidates the reasons why people exhibit xenocentric consumer tendencies. In this context, a theoretical framework describing the evolution of consumer xenocentrism (C-XEN) was constructed by integrating elements from diverse theories.
