Global Existence in a Predator-Prey Model with Nonlinear Indirect Chemotaxis Mechanism

    Akkoyunlu, Ebubekir

One of the fundamental processes in ecology is the interaction between predator and prey. Predator-prey interactions refer to the relative changes in population density of two species as they share the same environment and one species preys on the other. There are many studies global existence or blow-up of solutions on the predator-prey model. Our this paper related to the predator-prey model with nonlinear indirect chemotaxis mechanism under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. We establish the global existence and boundedness of classical solutions of our problem by using parabolic regularity theory. Namely, firstly we show that and boundedness in for some, then we obtain the-bound of and by using Alikakos-Moser iteration. Thus, it is proved that the model has a unique global classical solution under suitable conditions on the parameters in a smooth bounded domain.

A Numerical Study of Topography and Roughness of Sloped Surfaces Using Process Simulation Data for Laser Powder Bed Fusion

    Aydogan, Beytullah; Chou, Kevin

The simulation of additive manufacturing has become a prominent research area in the past decade. Process physics simulations are employed to replicate laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) manufacturing processes, aiming to predict potential issues through simulated data. This study focuses on calculating surface roughness by utilizing 3D surface topology extracted from simulated data, as surface roughness significantly influences part quality. Accurately predicting surface roughness using a simulation remains a persistent challenge. To address this challenge, the L-PBF technique with two different cases (pre- and post-contouring) was simulated using two-step process physics simulations. The discrete element method was utilized to simulate powder spreading, followed by the Flow-3D melting simulation. Ten layers were simulated at three different linear energy density (LED) combinations for both cases, with samples positioned at a 30-degree angle to accommodate upskin and downskin effects. Furthermore, a three-dimensional representation of the melted region for each layer was generated using the thermal gradient output from the simulated data. All generated 3D layers were stacked and merged to consolidate a 3D representation of the overall sample. The surfaces (upskin, downskin, and side skins) were extracted from this merged sample. Subsequently, these surfaces were analyzed, and surface roughness (Sa values) was calculated using MATLAB. The obtained values were then compared with experimental results. The downskin surface roughness results from the simulation were found to be within the range of the experimental results. This alignment is attributed to the fact that the physics simulation primarily focuses on melt pool depth and width. These promising findings indicate the potential for accurately predicting surface roughness through simulation.

Investigation of Vibration Control Performance with Modified Motion Planning Based on Basic Functions for Composite Robot Manipulators

    Uyar, M.

When flexible manipulators complete their movements to the desired position, vibrations occur at the endpoint. Reducing vibrations is an important advantage for eliminating positioning errors and monitoring position accuracy. However, the increase in vibration amplitudes leads to the inability to complete the planned tasks in the applications and results in loss of productivity. Therefore, the reduction of end-effector vibrations is an important research area. In this study, a motion-based control (MBC) method with designed motion profiles is introduced to reduce the endpoint vibrations of epoxy–glass-reinforced composite manipulators. Three different motion profiles, namely Modification-1, Modification-2, and Modification-3, are designed according to time and maximum velocity values depending on the system's frequencies. For the design of Modification-1, variable deceleration and acceleration times are considered, while for Modification-2 and Modification-3, both the maximum angular velocity and the deceleration and acceleration times are utilized. For two different angular positions and motion times, all motion profiles are applied to two composite manipulators with different frequencies, and the results are experimentally and numerically obtained to examine the vibration performance of MBC. Simulation results confirmed with experiments are achieved using mathematical models in ANSYS. To evaluate the effectiveness of MBC, the change in RMS values of endpoint vibration responses and the reduction rates are presented comparatively for all motion profiles. The results show significant advantages for the MBC method, reducing vibrations by approximately 99%, and eliminating positioning errors caused by vibrations.

The effect of cooling plate, mechanical vibration, and grain refinement on the microstructure and hardness of A380 produced by sand mold

Uslu, Emin; Tiğli, Ahmet; Çolak, Murat

The mechanical properties of aluminium alloys can be increased by controlling the grain size and morphology of the alloy. In these studies, mechanical vibration, cooling slope plate (CSP), and grain refiner were applied on sand mould casting using A380 alloys. The hardness, and microstructure of the cast samples are investigated. These processes lead to the refinement of grain structures and a decrease in the tendency for dendritic structure formation. The Effect of the solidification time (modulus) on the microstructure is investigated. It was determined that the solidification time varies depending on the section thickness, which affects the SDAS values. It was observed that the lowest SDAS values were in CSP and the highest values were in grain refiners added casting. The lowest hardness value was recorded at CSP casting. Meanwhile, the grain refiner added vibration casting exhibits the highest hardness.

Durability of slag-based alkali-activated materials: A critical review

    Gökçe, H.S.

As the world becomes increasingly aware of the devastating effects of climate change, the need for sustainable building materials that are both durable and environmentally friendly increases. Geopolymer and alkali-activated materials formed by a chemical reaction between an alkaline activator solution and an aluminosilicate source have gained popularity in recent years. The alkaline activator solution dissolves the aluminosilicate source, which then undergoes a polycondensation reaction to form a three-dimensional geopolymeric gel network. The development of this network ensures the strength and durability of the material. Today, this phenomenon of durability has been studied in detail to enable the development of superior construction materials, taking into account degradation mechanisms such as carbonation, leaching, shrinkage, fire, freezing and thawing, and exposure to aggressive environments (chlorides, acids, and sulphates). Although there are many unsolved problems in their engineering applications, slag-based alkali-activated materials appear to be more advantageous and are promising as alternative materials to ordinary Portland cement. First of all, it should not be ignored that the cure sensitivity is high in these systems due to compressive strength losses of up to 69%. Loss of strength of alkali-activated materials is considered an important indicator of degradation. In binary precursors, the presence of fly ash in slag can result in an improvement of over 10% in compressive strength of the binary-based alkali-activated materials after undergoing carbonation. The binary systems can provide superior resistance to many degradation mechanisms, especially exposure to high-temperature. The partial presence of class F fly ash in the slag-based precursor can overcome the poor ability of alkali-activated materials to withstand high temperatures. Due to the desired pore structure, alkali-activated materials may not be damaged even after 300 freeze–thaw cycles. Their superior permeability compared to cementitious counterparts can extend service life against chloride corrosion by more than 20 times. While traditional (ordinary Portland cement-based) concrete remains the most widely used material in construction, geopolymer concrete’s superior performance makes it an increasingly emerging option for sustainable and long-lasting infrastructure.

Çınar, İrfan; Gıdık, Betül; Dirican, Ebubekir

Background: This study aimed to investigate the cytotoxic, apoptotic, invasion, metastasis, and heat shock proteins (HSPs) effects of N. sativa oil on breast and gastric cancer cells. Methods: We assessed the cytotoxic and apoptotic effects of various concentrations of N. sativa oil (10-50-100-200 µg/mL) on MCF7 breast cancer and AGS, an adenocarcinoma of the gastric cell line, at 24, 48 and 72 h using the MTT test. Additionally, the expression of the Caspase-3, BCL2/Bax, MMP2-9 and HSP60-70 gene was examined using RT-PCR in cell lines treating with N. sativa. Results: The MTT experiments demonstrate that N. sativa has a time and dose-dependent inhibitory effect on the proliferation of MCF7 and AGS cancer cells. The vitality rates of MCF7 and AGS cells treated with N. sativa were 77.04–67.50% at 24 h, 65.28–39.14% at 48 h, and 48.95–32.31% at 72 h. The doses of 100 and 200 µg/mL were shown to be the most effective on both cancer cells. RT-PCR analysis revealed that N. sativa oil extract increased caspase-3 levels in both cell lines at higher concentrations and suppressed BCL2/Bax levels. Exposure of MCF7 and AGS cell lines to N. sativa caused a significant decrease in the expression of MMP2-9 and HSP60-70 genes over time, particularly at a dosage of 200 µg/mL compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Our findings indicate that N. sativa oil has a dose-dependent effect on cytotoxicity and the expression of apoptotic, heat shock proteins, and matrix metalloproteinases genes in breast and gastric cancer.

Gelatine-Based Biopolymer Film Produced from Ozone-Treated Film-Forming Solutions Containing Whey Protein Concentrate: Effects on Physical, Mechanical, and Thermal Characteristics

    Mercan, Emin

This study aimed to determine the effects of the ozone treatment of film-forming solutions (FFSs) containing whey protein concentrate (WPC) and gelatine on biopolymer films’ physical, mechanical, and thermal properties. Film samples were produced from a FFS that was ozone-treated at 0 (control), 5, 10, and 30 min. Ozone treatment caused an increase in the pH values of the FFS, whereas the zeta potential remained negative. The films became lighter in colour, slightly greenish, and more opaque with longer ozonation times. The control sample showed the highest thermogravimetric weight loss (92.15%). The weight loss of the samples decreased with increasing ozone treatment time. The application of ozone treatment on the FFS enhanced the films’ mechanical properties. Increased ozone treatment time improved the film samples’ tensile strength, elongation at break, and toughness values. In conclusion, the results of this study demonstrate that the ozone treatment of FFS containing whey protein concentrate and gelatine can significantly enhance the physical, mechanical, and thermal properties of biopolymer films. These results highlight the potential of ozone treatment as a viable method for improving the performance and quality of biopolymer films used in food packaging, offering promising advantages for sustainable and environmentally friendly packaging solutions.

Analytical approach to contact mechanics of functionally graded orthotropic layers with gravitational considerations

Öner, Erdal; Al-Qado, Ahmed Wasfi Hasan

Contact problems involving deformable bodies are widespread in both industrial and everyday situations. They have a crucial impact on structural and mechanical systems, which has led to significant efforts in modeling and numerical simulations. These efforts aim to improve understanding and optimization in various engineering applications. This study examines the contact problem involving a functionally graded (FG) orthotropic layer resting on a rigid foundation, without considering frictional influences. A point load is applied to the layer through a rigid punch on its top surface. Additionally, the gravitational effects of the FG orthotropic layer are considered in the analyses. Material parameters and density of the FG orthotropic layer are presumed to exhibit exponential variations along the vertical axis. The resolution of the problem involves deriving stress and displacement expressions through the application of elasticity theory and integral transformation techniques. By imposing the pertinent boundary conditions onto these expressions, a singular integral equation is formulated, wherein the contact stress under the punch remains unknown. Employing the Gauss–Chebyshev integration method, this integral equation is subsequently numerically solved, particularly for a flat punch profile. The outcomes of this investigation encompass the determination of contact stresses under the punch, the critical separation load, and the critical separation point—marking the initial separation between the FG orthotropic layer and the rigid foundation. Additionally, the analysis yields dimensionless representations of normal stresses along the symmetry axis within the FG orthotropic layer, as well as shear stresses along a designated section proximate to the symmetry axis. Furthermore, it provides insights into the normal stresses along the x axis at the bottom surface of the FG orthotropic layer, contingent upon various parameters and distinct orthotropic material compositions.

Polarization Insensitive and Thin Metamaterial Absorber Performed in High-Frequency 5G Bands

Arslan Madak, Seher Şeyma; Teber, Ahmet; Topkaya, Ramazan

A variety of fascinating applications, including 5G communication devices, high-speed data transfer, and large-scale Internet of Things (IoT), make life easier with 5G technology. Despite the 5G’s superior features, the percentage of electromagnetic (EM) waves in the environment execute a significant increase, unpleasantly. Broadband metamaterial absorbers are an appealing alternative to gather these unwanted signals. This study aims to numerically investigate a broadband metamaterial absorber (MMA) in the 5G high-frequency spectral range with the metasurface formed with coupled resistors. In addition, the 24.25-27.5GHz frequency range, one of the high-frequency 5G bands used by selected countries such as the European Union and China, was preferred. The minor aim of this study is that the usage of coupled elements as resistors may have the ability to increase the absorption bandwidth and magnitude. Comprehensive simulations were performed using the finite integration technique (FIT) utilized by the CST Microwave Studio program to investigate the absorber performance and other relevant parameters. The unit cell design is created metal-substrate-metal structures as asymmetric, single-layer, and easy to implement. The absorption responses are investigated according to the oblique incidence angle, polarization angle for TE &TM modes. The suggested MMA provided an absorbency response above 87.6% in the frequency range 24.20-27.30GHz under normal incidence. Moreover, to comprehend the physical mechanism on absorption, the top and bottom surfaces of the absorber's electric field and surface current distributions are assessed. The designed MMA resulting in relatively high performance and polarization insensitive is helpful for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding of 5G signals in the FR2/mmWave frequency regime.

A Multi-response Nonlinear Programming Model with an Inscribed Design to Optimize Bioreduction Conditions of (S)-phenyl (pyridin-2-yl)methanol by Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides N13

    Özdemir, Akın; Şahin, Engin

Asymmetric bioreductions have the potential to synthesize chiral alcohols when catalyzed by biocatalysts. Nevertheless, the (S)-phenyl (pyridin-2-yl)methanol ((S)-2) analgesic synthesis poses significant challenges concerning unsatisfactory substrate amount and production method. Thus, this study proposes an inscribed design-focused multi-response nonlinear optimization model for the asymmetric reduction of the phenyl(pyridin-2-yl)methanone (1) with Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides N13 biocatalyst. From the novel inscribed design-focused multi-response nonlinear optimization model, optimization conditions of the reaction, such as pH = 6, temperature = 29 °C, incubation time = 53 h, and agitation speed = 153 rpm, were found. Also, the reaction conversion was predicted to be 99%, and the product of the enantiomeric excess (ee) was 98.4% under the obtained optimization conditions. (S)-2 was obtained with 99% ee, 99% conversion, and 98% yield while performing a validation experiment using the determined optimized conditions. In addition, 1 with the amount of 11.9 g was converted entirely to (S)-2 (11.79 g, 98% isolated yield) on a high gram scale. Also, this study is noted as the first example of the gram-scale production of (S)-2 using an optimization strategy and biocatalyst. Further, the applicability of the inscribed design-focused optimization model in biocatalytic reactions has been demonstrated and provides an effective process for the analgesic synthesis of (S)-2, which is a green, cost-effective method of producing chiral aryl heteroaryl methanol.

For this reason, total phenolic (TPC), total flavonoid (TFC) compounds, and antioxidant activities (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrilhydrazyl radical scavenging activity (DPPH•), and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP)) of extracts prepared with DES were investigated with an experimental design and optimization study conducted for this purpose. An extraction time of 40.15 min was determined as the optimal condition. Under these conditions, a molar ratio of 3:1 (acetic acid:choline chloride) and a water ratio of 42.17 % provided the highest phenolic/flavonoid compounds and antioxidant activity. Correlations between water ratio, molar ratio, and sonication extraction time were determined using principal component analysis (PCA). In conditions where TPC, FRAP, and DPPH• were high according to PCA, it can be concluded that the extraction time, water ratio, and molar ratio are at high levels; contrarily, TFC is at a low level. In conclusion, ultrasound-assisted extraction using DES proved effective for salsify. Therefore, choline chloride-based DESs, can be recommended as environmentally friendly green solvents and an alternative to organic solvents for the extraction of bioactive compounds from salsify.
