The impact of ChatGPT-integrated reading activities on the reading attitudes and habits of middle school students

Kaplan, Kadir; Özen, Nesime Ertan; Özcan, Halil Ziya

This study examines the impact of the artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT on middle school students' attitudes and reading habits during a brief intervention. Twenty-six students from a middle school in Türkiye—13 in the experimental group and 13 in the control group—took part in an eight-session, four-week quasi-experimental study. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected using a sequential explanatory mixed-methods approach. Data was gathered and analyzed using the Attitudes and Habits towards Reading Scale, the Digital Literacy Scale, and focus group interviews. Preliminary results indicate that students in the experimental group had better reading habits and attitudes than those in the control group. After the ChatGPT intervention was implemented, the experimental group's students showed a significant improvement in their positive attitudes toward reading. However, the experimental group also showed an unexpected increase in negative reading attitudes, warranting further investigation. Three primary themes, covering both the advantages and disadvantages of the application, were identified from the student interview data. These results highlight how artificial intelligence (AI) technologies present a potentially novel way to boost reading motivation in educational settings. However, to use these technologies effectively, educators and students must acquire more knowledge and skills. Longer-term studies with larger sample sizes are also required to validate these initial findings.

Optimization of Antioxidant Recovery from Deep Eutectic Solvent Phase via Back-Extraction Using Taguchi Method

Kamiloğlu, Aybike; Elbir Abca, Tuğba; Kutlu, Naciye

This study investigates the use of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) via ethyl acetate-mediated liquid–liquid extraction and the optimization of the process using the Taguchi method for the recovery of antioxidant compounds from tea industry waste. In the study, choline chloride was used as a hydrogen bond acceptor; lactic acid, glycerol, and ethanol were used as hydrogen bond donors; and different ratios of water (10–30%) were added to reduce the viscosity of the DESs. Ultrasound-assisted extraction results showed that lactic acid-based DESs provided the highest total phenolic content and antioxidant activity due to their ability to break down plant cell walls. However, in the recovery phase carried out with ethyl acetate, it was determined that ethanol-based DESs (ChCl:EtOH) were more effective in transferring antioxidants to the organic phase due to their looser molecular structure. Optimization using the Taguchi L9 orthogonal array revealed the following results: ChCl:EtOH solvent, 2:1 ethyl acetate/extract ratio, 20% water ratio, and 30-min shaking period were determined as the optimal conditions. Under these conditions, the model predicted a yield of 93.34%, and experimental validation revealed a recovery yield of 85.70 ± 1.13%. The results demonstrate that this developed green extraction method offers a sustainable alternative for converting tea waste into high value-added functional components.

A Single-Source Pilot Study of Machine Learning-Assisted Microwave S-Parameter Screening for Glucose Syrup and Water Adulteration in Grape Molasses

Engin, Mustafa Alptekin; Cakir, Mehmet; Cakil, Turan

Grape molasses, known as pekmez in Turkish, is a traditional concentrated fruit product that may be adulterated with cheaper sweeteners or water. This study evaluated broadband microwave S-parameter measurements as a rapid, non-destructive screening approach for detecting glucose syrup substitution and water dilution in grape molasses. Nine physical mixture groups were prepared, including pure grape molasses, glucose syrup–substituted mixtures at 5–30%, pure glucose syrup as an endpoint reference, and water-diluted mixtures at 10–30%. For each group, five consecutive technical measurements were recorded using a Libre vector network analyzer connected to a WR-229 waveguide-based two-port setup over 3.30–4.90 GHz. All mixtures were prepared from a single commercial grape molasses source and a single glucose syrup source; the results should therefore be interpreted as pilot-scale, single-source evidence rather than a generalizable screening method. Glucose syrup substitution produced a systematic upward shift in S11 resonance frequency. In the practical 0–30% range, S11 resonance frequency showed a strong linear relationship with glucose syrup content on the calibration data (R2 = 0.9955; inverse prediction error = 0.72 percentage points), though this reflects calibration fit rather than independently validated prediction accuracy. Water dilution produced stronger S21 attenuation. The detection principle is based on the complementary use of S11 resonance behavior for glucose syrup substitution and S21 transmission loss for water dilution. In group-blocked point-wise classification, the Ensemble Bagged Trees classifier achieved 88.79% accuracy and a macro-F1 score of 0.874. These results indicate that S11 and S21 provide complementary proof-of-concept indicators for controlled-mixture screening of grape molasses adulteration.

Modulation of stress and neuroplasticity biomarkers via rhythmic vocalization: a controlled study on NDNF, cortisol, and monoamines

    Okur, Süheyb; Bayraktar, Bülent

Background: The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of reciting the Quran (from Mushaf) on serotonin, dopamine, NDNF, and cortisol levels in relation to mental well-being. Methods: This study was conducted on a sample of university students who know how to read the Quran in Türkiye, selected by a non-probability method, with a pre-test-post-test control group and a longitudinal design; the assignment to the groups was also done randomly. The research was carried out with 72 university students (36 female, 36 male), aged 19–30, who know how to read the Quran and do not have any health problems. Two groups were formed: a 36-person experimental group and a 36-person passive resting control group. The Mental Well-Being Scale and a personal information form were used to evaluate the participants’ well-being status. Salivary serotonin, dopamine, NDNF, and cortisol levels were examined using the ELISA technique in samples taken before and after the experimental group recited verses 195–200 of Surah Al-i Imran aloud. Number, percentage, mean, Pearson correlation, and ANOVA tests were used to evaluate the data. Statistical significance was accepted as p <.05 for all analyses. Results: A significant group-time interaction was found (p <.05). Compared to the passive resting control group, the experimental group showed statistically significant increases in salivary serotonin, dopamine, and NDNF levels, and a significant decrease in cortisol levels. However, a critical dissociation was observed: despite this neuroprotective biomarker profile, the control group reported statistically significantly higher post-intervention mental well-being scores than the experimental group (p <.05). This suggests that the acute cognitive load and performance anxiety associated with the recitation task may temporarily mask physiological benefits in self-reports. Conclusions: A brief (5-minute) ‘Tartil’ recitation of the Quran demonstrates immediate, positive neurobiological effects by reducing stress hormones (cortisol) and increasing reward- and neuroplasticity-related biomarkers (dopamine, serotonin, NDNF). However, this did not immediately translate to higher self-reported well-being, suggesting the relationship between the neurobiology of recitation and its perceived psychological effects is complex and potentially confounded by factors such as performance anxiety or cognitive load in an experimental setting. Clinical trial number: Not applicable.

Depression and psychiatric help-seeking as joint outcomes: a Bayesian multilevel analysis of household-level dependence

Camadan, Fatih; Yıldız, Mehmet Selim; Şahin, Hatice Büşra; Urak, Faruk; Börekçi, Taha Berkay; Bilgiç, Abdulbaki

Background: Depression and the utilization of psychiatric services (PSU) are complex mental health outcomes shaped by a wide range of individual, familial, and socioeconomic factors. However, within the context of Türkiye, limited attention has been devoted to the simultaneous modeling of these outcomes and to the systematic examination of their shared household-level determinants. Methods: This study conducts a concurrent analysis of two binary outcomes—self-reported depression and receipt of professional psychiatric care within the past 12 months—using data from a nationally representative household survey. The analytical sample comprises 22,742 individuals nested within 10,028 households across Türkiye. A Bayesian multilevel bivariate logistic regression model was employed to account explicitly for the hierarchical structure of the data, with individuals nested within households. Household-level random intercepts were specified for both outcomes, and the correlation between the latent processes underlying depression and PSU was directly estimated. Weakly informative priors were adopted, and model estimation was performed using the No-U-Turn Sampler (NUTS), an efficient variant of the Hamiltonian Monte Carlo algorithm. Results: The results reveal pronounced clustering of both depression and PSU at the household level. A strong positive correlation between household-level random effects indicates that individuals experiencing depression are substantially more likely to utilize psychiatric services within the same family context. At the individual level, men are significantly less likely than women to report depressive symptoms or to seek psychiatric care. Tobacco and alcohol use are positively associated with depression risk, whereas adequate rest and healthier lifestyle behaviors exhibit protective effects. Increases in body mass index (BMI) are associated with a higher likelihood of depression. In contrast, active employment and higher household income are linked to reduced depression risk. Additionally, a range of sociodemographic and economic characteristics exert significant effects on both depression and PSU. Conclusions: These findings demonstrate that depression and psychiatric service utilization (PSU) are shaped not only by individual-level characteristics but also by shared familial and structural factors. The results underscore the need for mental health policies that move beyond narrowly individual-centered frameworks and instead adopt holistic strategies that incorporate household dynamics and broader socioeconomic conditions.

Adverse childhood experiences and problematic gambling among young adults: a moderated serial mediation analysis

Yayla, İbrahim Erdoğan; Makas, Samet; Dombak, Kübra; Bekir, Seyhan; Çelik, Eyüp; Arpaci, Ibrahim; Baloglu, Mustafa

Problem gambling is a serious public health issue among young adults today and the literature suggests that adverse childhood experiences may be associated with it. Additionally, difficulties in emotion regulation and self-control may contribute to the association between problem gambling and adverse childhood experiences. Sensation seeking and a family history of gambling may also influence these relationships. Hence, we examined the relationship between adverse childhood experiences and problem gambling among young adults. We analyzed the collected data from 579 young adults (18–29 years old, 67.5% male) via an online survey using a cross-sectional research design. More specifically, we tested the serial mediating roles of difficulties in emotion regulation and self-control, as well as the moderating roles of sensation seeking and a family history of gambling. We found a significant positive association between adverse childhood experiences and problem gambling. Both difficulties in emotion regulation and self-control had significant mediating effects. Sensation seeking and family history of gambling moderated the mediating effects, strengthening the pathways leading to problem gambling at higher levels of sensation seeking and in the presence of family gambling history. These findings indicate that emotion regulation and self-control are important psychological processes in explaining the relationship between adverse childhood experiences and problem gambling. They also suggest that high sensation seeking and a family history of gambling may strengthen the relationships.

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have emerged as green alternatives to conventional solvents for extracting bioactive compounds from plants. This study evaluated nine choline chloride–based DESs for recovering antioxidant polyphenols from four parts of the tea plant (Camellia sinensis): seed, bud, leaf, and flower. Total phenolic content, antioxidant activity, and individual polyphenolic profiles were determined, and the greenness of the sample preparation was assessed using AGREEprep. The highest total phenolic content (53.28 mg GAE/g) and antioxidant activity (141.17 mg TE/g) were obtained from leaves using ChCl:formic acid, outperforming ethanol and methanol. Leaves also exhibited the highest total quantified polyphenolic content (up to 95,813 mg/kg DW, corresponding to the sum of the quantified polyphenols), with epicatechin gallate and gallocatechin + epigallocatechin being the major contributors. Flowers and buds showed notable polyphenolic diversity, while seeds contained the lowest levels. Statistical analysis confirmed clear clustering patterns according to plant part and solvent type. AGREEprep evaluation yielded scores up to 0.54, highlighting the environmental benefits of DES-based extraction. We demonstrated that tea leaves were the richest source of bioactive polyphenols, and selected DESs, particularly formic acid–based and ethylene glycol–based, exhibited superior efficiency and sustainability compared to conventional solvents. These findings support the wider adoption of DESs for green, high-yield extraction of pharmacologically important compounds from tea and other medicinal plants.

Performance level controlled efficiency of graphene nanoplatelets in cementitious composites

Şahin, Yaren; Öksüzer, Nurullah; Kütük, Sezai; Gökçe, Hacı Süleyman

Graphene nanoplatelets (nGP) have been widely reported as effective nano-reinforcements for cementitious composites; however, their optimal dosage remains inconsistent across existing studies. This variability is commonly attributed to nanomaterial-related parameters, whereas the influence of the cementitious matrix’s inherent performance is rarely systematically examined. In this study, cementitious matrices with distinct performance levels were designed by varying water-to-binder ratios (0.55, 0.40, and 0.30) and incorporating silica fume. Their interaction with nGP was experimentally investigated, with contents up to 2.4% being used. A total of 25 mix designs were evaluated for fresh-state behavior, mechanical performance, transport properties, and microstructural characteristics. The results indicate that the efficiency and optimal utilization of nGP are strongly governed by the matrix performance level. High-performance matrices (water-to-binder (w/b) = 0.30, 11% silica fume) achieved peak performance at 1.2% nGP, yielding compressive strength of 118.2 MPa and up to 50% reduction in capillary water transport, whereas low-performance matrices (w/b = 0.55) exhibited limited sensitivity to nGP incorporation. Microstructural observations confirmed that matrix densification improved nGP integration and hierarchical pore refinement by enhancing interfacial bonding, thereby restricting capillary water transport. The findings demonstrate that optimal nGP dosage cannot be treated as an intrinsic material parameter and should instead be defined in relation to matrix performance level, enabling performance-based dosage guidelines for nano-engineered composites in high-durability applications.

Chemical Profiling of Stachys cretica subsp. anatolica Rech. f. (Endemic) Essential Oils and their Methanol Extracts with Evaluation as Enzyme Inhibitors, Antioxidant, and Antimicrobial Agents

Öz, Mehmet; Fidan, Muhammed Said; Baltacı, Cemalettin; Akmeşe, Osman; Sefalı, Abdurrahman; Aygül, İmdat

Enzyme inhibition activities, phenolic compounds, antioxidant activities, bioactive compounds, antimicrobial activities, and chemical components of essential oil and methanol extracts obtained from the aerial parts of S. cretica subsp. anatolica were investigated. The main phenolic compounds of aerial parts were catechin, oleuropein, and epicatechin. The determined enzyme inhibitor activities highlight the potential of S. cretica subsp. anatolica as a source of bioactive compounds, particularly for carbonic anhydrase and cholinesterase inhibition. The essential oil and methanol extract exhibited remarkable activities against CA-II, AChE, and BChE, although they were less potent than standard inhibitors. The essential oils generally showed stronger antimicrobial activity compared to the 30% methanol extracts across most bacterial and fungal strains, as evidenced by minimum lethal concentration (MLC) and lower minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values and larger inhibition zones. Chloramphenicol used alone exhibited the highest antimicrobial efficacy, with the lowest MIC and MLC values and the largest inhibition zones. The essential oils of S. cretica subsp. anatolica were determined as esters, oxygenated sesquiterpenes, and aldehydes in aerial parts. The main components were found to be hexahydrofarnesyl acetone in the aerial parts.

Examining the relationships between artificial intelligence literacy, AI-TPACK, job satisfaction, and well-being among teachers through structural equation modeling

Kayalı, Bünyami; Balat, Şener; Yavuz, Mehmet

This study explores the relationships between teachers' artificial intelligence literacy (AIL), AI-TPACK competencies, job satisfaction, and well-being. Survey data from 350 in-service teachers were analyzed using PLS-SEM to examine how AI-related competencies are associated with professional and psychological outcomes. The findings reveal that AIL strongly predicts AI-specific knowledge, especially AI-TCK, AI-TK, AI-TPCK, and AI-TPK, with a moderate influence on traditional pedagogical knowledge. At the job satisfaction level, AI-TCK and general pedagogical knowledge are positively associated with satisfaction, while AI-TK has a negative relationship. Mediation analyses show that AI competencies influence well-being through job satisfaction. AI-TCK and pedagogical knowledge are positively associated with well-being indirectly through job satisfaction, whereas AI-TK shows a negative indirect association along the same pathway. The study suggests that AI-related competencies are linked to teachers' work-life outcomes, and highlights job satisfaction as the key mediator between AI competence and well-being. Because the design is cross-sectional and self-reported, these relationships are interpreted as associations rather than causal effects. The study advocates for integrating AI in ways that support pedagogical development rather than just technical skills.

Comparative thermal and hydraulic performance of Type-22 panel radiators under continuous and pulsating flow

Köksal, Hüseyin; Ceviz, Mehmet Akif; Muratçobanoğlu, Burak; Mandev, Emre

Pulsating water-side flow has been proposed as a radiator control strategy to enhance heat emission at low supply temperatures, yet device-level studies rarely quantify thermal gains together with hydraulic costs under matched baselines. This study experimentally investigates the coupled thermal and hydraulic response of a PCCP Type-22 panel radiator operated under continuous and on–off pulsating flow regimes. A dedicated test loop was developed using a temperature-controlled hot-water tank (50 °C setpoint) and an Arduino-based driver to impose repeatable pulsation, while measuring inlet/outlet temperatures, instantaneous flow rate, pump electrical energy, and spatiotemporal surface temperatures via infrared thermography. The results show that increasing the continuous flow rate provides the highest absolute heat output, but at the cost of increased pumping energy. In contrast, pulsating operation improves the thermal–hydraulic balance by increasing heat delivery relative to the reference case while reducing pump energy consumption. Among the tested pulsating cases, short-period pulsation produced the most favorable behavior by maintaining a warmer and more spatially stable radiator surface. Longer off-periods promoted deeper surface cooling, reduced the effective emitting area, and weakened the thermal benefit of pulsation. Infrared thermography confirmed that the pulsation period strongly affects surface-temperature uniformity and temporal stability. Overall, short-period on–off pulsation emerges as the most favorable operating mode when the objective is to increase heat delivery while lowering pumping energy in PCCP-type radiators.

SURFACE ROUGHNESS AND SHORE-D HARDNESS OF SIX TROPICAL HARDWOODS; [RUGOSIDADE DA SUPERFÍCIE E DUREZA SHORE-D DE SEIS MADEIRAS TROPICAIS]; [RUGOSIDAD SUPERFICIAL Y DUREZA SHORE-D DE SEIS MADERAS TROPICALES]

Ayata, Umit; Domingos, Idalina; Ferreira, José; Cruz-Lopes, Luísa; Esteves, Bruno

Introduction: This study investigates the Shore-D hardness and surface roughness characteristics of six tropical wood species: Canelo (Nectandra spp.), Limbali (Gibertiodendron dewevrei), Difou (Morus mesozygia), Curupay (Anadenanthera macrocarpa), Ebiara (Berlinia bracteosa), and Zwarte kabbes (Diplotropis martiusii), aiming to assess their suitability for high-performance applications. Objective: To evaluate how wood species and sanding processes influence the mechanical properties and surface quality of selected tropical woods. Methods: Samples were conditioned and sanded using abrasives of different grit sizes (80, 100, 120, 150, and 180). Surface roughness parameters Ra, Rq, and Rz, as well as Shore-D hardness, were measured. Statistical analyses were performed using ANOVA and Duncan’s test. Results: Statistical analysis revealed that abrasive grit size significantly affected surface roughness (p < 0.001), with finer grits producing smoother surfaces. Wood species also had a significant effect on both roughness and hardness. Sanding had the greatest influence on Ra, Rq, and Rz parameters. Ebiara exhibited the smoothest surface, while Curupay showed the highest hardness (74.65). Conclusion: Surface roughness is primarily influenced by sanding grit, whereas hardness is determined by wood species. The results emphasize the importance of tailoring sanding procedures to the wood species in order to optimize surface quality and mechanical performance in industrial and decorative applications.

Mutlu, Elif; Köktürk, Seda Nur; Ersoy Söke, Nursena; Yardımcı, Hülya

Aim Early identification of malnutrition risk in hospitalized children is essential for timely nutritional intervention. This study aims diagnostic performance of three pediatric malnutrition screening tools validated in Turkish: STAMP, PYMS, and STRONG-Kids. Methods In this cross-sectional study, 148 hospitalized children were included. Nutritional risk was evaluated using STAMP, PYMS, and STRONG-Kids screening tools. Anthropometric measurements were performed, and height-for-age, Body Mass Index (BMI)-for-age, and Middle Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC)-for-age z-scores were calculated. The sensitivity and specificity of each tool were assessed in identifying chronic and acute malnutrition. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to assess the discriminative ability of the screening tools. Results Chronic malnutrition was identified in 12.8% of patients and acute malnutrition in 15.5%. STAMP and STRONG-Kids showed the highest sensitivity for detecting chronic malnutrition (84.2% and 84.3%), while PYMS had the highest specificity. STRONG-Kids demonstrated the greatest sensitivity for acute malnutrition and low MUAC z-scores (100.0%). ROC analysis showed that PYMS had the highest Area Under the Curve (AUC) for acute malnutrition, whereas STRONG-Kids had the highest AUC for chronic malnutrition, although all tools demonstrated limited discriminative ability for chronic malnutrition. Conclusion STAMP and STRONG-Kids were more sensitive in detecting malnutrition risk, whereas PYMS showed higher specificity. Tool performance varied according to anthropometric indicators. Implications to practice In clinical practice, selecting the screening tool according to the targeted malnutrition type and available anthropometric indicators may improve early detection and allow more effective prioritization of nutritional interventions in hospitalized children.

Cognitive and Emotional Mediators of the Transformation of Adverse Childhood Experiences into Depression, Anxiety, and Stress: Testing a Model in Young Adults

    Akeren, İhsan; Aktaş, Emirhan

Studies show that symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress in college students increase with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). If individuals in young adulthood cannot cope with the negative experiences they were exposed to in childhood, they are at risk of mental health problems later in life. This study aimed to determine whether the effects of the past continue into the present and to examine their scope by testing the effect of ACEs on depression, anxiety, and stress through positive and negative feelings and irrational beliefs. Using stratified convenience sampling, 708 volunteer undergraduate students, 458 female and 250 male, with a mean age of 20.84 years, were reached in their classrooms. In the cross-sectional correlational survey design, Hayes’ PROCESS macro (model 80) was used for conditional process analyses after the regression assumptions were tested. The mediator variables positive and negative feelings and irrational beliefs accounted for about two-thirds of the effect of ACEs on depression (total effect = 0.598, 95% CI [0.442, 0.755], direct effect = 0.209 [0.069, 0.348]), about half of the effect on anxiety (total effect = 0.650 [0.499, 0.802], direct effect = 0.360 [0.214, 0.506]), and more than half of the effect on stress (total effect = 0.676 [0.507, 0.844], direct effect = 0.302 [0.146, 0.458]). Finally, compared to males, females had higher mean scores for ACEs, negative feelings, and depression, anxiety, and stress, and lower mean scores for irrational beliefs. In conclusion, the study shows that the negative effects of the past continue to appear in the present and recommends taking steps to prevent their potential risks for the mental health of young adults.

The Effect of Sugar Beet (Beta vulgaris L.) Varieties Grown Under Semi-Arid Conditions in Turkey’s Eastern Anatolia Region on Yield and Quality

Bagcı, Ikram; Gul, Volkan; Sefaoglu, Firat; Lan, Yuzhou; Coban, Furkan

Global climate change, which is increasingly evident today, leads to significant fluctuations in the yield and quality parameters of sugar beet varieties, particularly due to its direct impact on semi-arid regions. Therefore, the adaptation capacity of varieties especially in the semi-arid areas of eastern regions and their responses to drought and temperature stress are of critical importance. This study was conducted during the 2022–2023 growing seasons to evaluate the yield and quality performance of ten sugar beet varieties (Seranada, Lider, Mohican, Terronova, Aranka, Turbata, Bernache, Setenil, Tisserin, and Chevalier) within a continental agro-ecological zone characterized by high altitude and a semi-arid climate. The results revealed significant differences among the varieties in terms of all examined traits. The highest root yield was obtained from Chevalier (95.30 ton/ha) and Mohican (94.17 ton/ha), while Tisserin produced the lowest (71.34 ton/ha). In terms of sugar yield, Terronova ranked highest (16.18 ton/ha), whereas Tisserin (12.44 ton/ha) and Setenil (12.34 ton/ha) showed the lowest performances. The Lider variety recorded the highest sugar content (18.22%), indicating its potential as a quality-oriented genotype. Overall, Mohican and Terronova demonstrated the most favorable responses under semi-arid conditions. These findings underscore the importance of regional variety testing for identifying high-yielding and high-quality sugar beet genotypes, especially in environments affected by altitude, climate variability, and soil characteristics.

The 20-Year Evolution of Distance Education: A Bibliometric and LDA-Based Topic Model Analysis

Yavuz, Mehmet; Balat, Şener; Kayalı, Bünyami; Gülen, Emirhan

Although research on distance education has increased substantially in recent years, comprehensive analyses capturing the overall thematic development of the field remain limited. Modeling studies are necessary to address this gap and to uncover long-term research trends. This study aimed to reveal the trends of research conducted in the field of distance education in the last two decades by using machine learning methodology and bibliometric analysis. The unique aspect of the study was its use of the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) algorithm, a machine learning method for analysing large-scale data. Within the scope of the study, 54,444 articles in the Web of Science database were analysed. Bibliometric analysis revealed that distance education had gained significant momentum, especially in the post-pandemic period, with a wide range of applications in different disciplines such as education, management, and health. As a result of LDA analysis, 19 thematic topics were identified. Among these, digitalization, artificial intelligence, Web-based learning, and social interaction and collaboration stood out. Time series analysis showed an increasing trend for topics such as artificial intelligence and emergency distance education over the years, with less interest shown in topics such as Web-based learning and program design. The study emphasized that distance education is in a technology-driven transformation process and pointed to areas that will offer new opportunities for researchers. Furthermore, recommendations for decision-makers, such as investments in digital infrastructure, integration of artificial intelligence-based systems, and the establishment of quality standards, also emerged.

Relationship Between Aluminum Liquid Metal Quality and Defects

Kutsal, Umit; Colak, Murat; Ertugrul, Onur

Aluminum alloys are commonly used in various industries today. In order to produce defect-free high-quality alloys with sustainable processes, defects must be reduced, and liquid metal quality must be improved. There are various methods that can be used for the measurement of liquid metal quality. Some of which are density index, bifilm index, K-Mold index, PoDFA, Prefil, fluidity test, and thermal analysis. The relationship and validation between these methods are still not clear. In this study, the relationship between aluminum liquid metal quality and defects is analyzed. Three different conditions were utilized. These conditions are (1) before a controlled degassing, (2) after the controlled degassing and (3) after the liquid metal is transferred to the holding furnace. According to the results, it was observed that the reduction of bifilms index did not reduce other inclusions and did not always favorably affect other measurement methods. It was also observed that the reduction of bifilm index did not improve the porosity level. Moreover, it was found that elongation values are related to the largest defect diameters. Bifilm index are not the only factor affecting the elongation and the density index directly affects the defect distribution. K-Mold index has an impact as it shows macro-inclusions. However, bifilm index, density index, fluidity index and K-Mold index are not as sufficient as numerical calculation of defect size by computed tomography (CT). The main factor directly affecting the elongation and tensile strength was found to be the inclusion size and diameter in the CT result. Examination of the fracture surfaces revealed that oxide contents are present, and the oxygen orientations and aluminum orientations are compatible. This harmony is thought to be related to the orientation of the bifilms in the structure.

Seismic performance of prestressed girder bridges considering soil-pile-structure interaction and isolation systems

Öner, Erdal; Aydoğan, Ayşe N.; Yurdakul, Muhammet; Ergün, Mustafa; Artar, Musa

This article presents a comprehensive numerical study to determine the seismic performance of the Kirazlıyalı Çenesuyu Bridge, currently in service in Kocaeli, Türkiye, under both seismically isolated and non-isolated conditions, considering different soil types. The study holds great importance due to Kocaeli’s status as one of Türkiye’s most developed industrial regions, its location in a high-seismic-risk area, and its complex geological structure. The Kirazlıyalı Çenesuyu Bridge is a structure consisting of simply supported prestressed girders, commonly used in highway transportation networks. Designed as a twin bridge, the structure is 134 meters in length and 20 meters in width. Currently, the bridge is not equipped with seismic isolators; instead, its superstructure rests on elastomeric bearings over abutments and piers. Within the scope of this study, the bridge was retrofitted with Single Curved Friction Pendulum (SCFP) seismic isolators. These SCFP isolators were specifically designed in accordance with the Turkey Building Earthquake Code (TBEC-2019) standards for two distinct soil classes: ZA (hard rock) and ZC (very dense sand and gravel). The soil-pile interaction was simulated using single-parameter Winkler spring models in both horizontal and vertical directions. The Finite Element Model (FEM) of the bridge was developed in SAP2000 software, and analyses were conducted on this platform. The seismic performance of the bridge was assessed through nonlinear dynamic time history analyses using real earthquake ground motion records from the Imperial Valley, Kocaeli, and Kahramanmaraş (Pazarcık) earthquakes under various scenarios. The seismic responses of the bridge were examined in terms of base shear forces, lateral displacements of the pile, shear forces at the pier, bending moments at the pier, deck accelerations, and the hysteresis curves of the isolator. The study results demonstrate significant improvements in the seismic behavior of the bridge when equipped with the seismic isolation system. Furthermore, these improvements are shown to be directly influenced by the interaction of the structure-pile-soil system, as well as the compatibility between the frequency characteristics of this system and the frequency content of the imposed earthquake. The numerical data supporting these results are presented in the relevant sections through tables and graphs.

Optimizing microwave drying parameters for rhododendron bee pollen: effects on antioxidant potential, polyphenols, and proteins

Kutlu, Naciye; Gercek, Yusuf Can; Ecem Bayram, Nesrin

Monofloral Rhododendron spp. bee pollen is a remarkable bee product due to its functional components as well as its potential pharmacological effects. In this study, Rhododendron spp. bee pollen was dried by the microwave method as an alternative to the conventional drying method. Different combinations of microwave powers (140, 210 and 280 W) and sample weights (10, 20 and 30 g) applied during microwave drying (MWD) were determined by Central Composite Design. Drying time, total protein, total carotenoid, total phenolic-flavonoid compounds, and proanthocyanidin yields of dried pollen were determined and antioxidant activity tests (CUPRAC and DPPH•) were performed. The analysis results were optimized by response surface methodology (RSM) and the optimum drying conditions were obtained when the microwave power was 280 W and the sample weight was 30 g. The optimal conditions have been established to reduce drying time and enhance the content of bioactive compounds. As a result of optimization, the composite desirability (d) was found to be 0.8. Experimental and predicted values were close to each other. In conclusion, MWD has demonstrated efficacy as a drying technique by significantly reducing drying time while maintaining and enhancing the yields of bioactive compounds in monofloral Rhododendron spp. bee pollen. In comparison to conventional techniques, the application of MWD in the drying process of monofloral Rhododendron spp. bee pollen is demonstrably more efficient and sustainable.

Experimental Electromagnetic Shielding Analysis of a Square-Resonator-Integrated Double-Concrete Structure Using Explainable Machine Learning

    Cakir, Mehmet

Electromagnetic shielding has become a practical concern in buildings and structures exposed to persistent interference. This paper reports experimental measurements of the frequency-dependent shielding properties of a square-resonator-integrated double-concrete structure, using a free-space S-parameter setup built around WR229 waveguide adaptors and horn antennas. Three variables were tested: concrete thickness D, relative permittivity εr, and relative magnetic permeability μr. Both εr and μr were characterized experimentally from carbon-fibre- and copper-slag-modified concrete rather than taken from standard tables. The novelty of the study lies in combining experimentally characterized concrete electromagnetic properties, an embedded square-resonator geometry, and explainability-driven machine learning analysis within a single experimental framework for cement-based EMI shielding design. A total of 96 parameter combinations were evaluated using calibrated S11 and reference-corrected S21 responses across 3.3–4.9 GHz. Thickness and electromagnetic material properties interacted—neither governed shielding performance on its own. The strongest transmission attenuation occurred at D = 5, εr = 7, and μr = 1.2, where minimum S21 reached approximately −62.98 dB at 3.6392 GHz. S11 varied considerably less than S21 across the tested combinations, suggesting transmission suppression is the dominant mechanism rather than reflection enhancement. A machine learning analysis confirmed that nonlinear ensemble models outperformed the linear baseline and identified thickness as the most influential predictor of minimum S21.
