Comakli, Omer; Comakli, Kemal; Ozdemir, Nesrin; Yilmaz, Mehmet
The goal of this work is to determine the optimum set of parameters by using the Taguchi method in vapour compression heat pump systems. The experimental apparatus consist of an air-to-liquid vapor compression heat pump, a water cooled condenser, a forced air evaporator, an electrical air and water heaters, and various measuring elements and other auxiliary equipments. Refrigerants R22, R407C, and five of their binary mixtures which contain about 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% mass fractions of R407C were tested. To determine the effect of the chosen parameters on the system and optimum working conditions, an experimental design method suggested by Genichi Taguchi was used. The most effective parameters are found to be the condenser water mass flow rate for the coefficient of performance and to be condenser water inlet temperature for the exergetic efficiency.

Gökçe, H. Suleyman; Taban, Saniye; Simsek, Osman
The aim of this study is to determine the alkali-silica reaction (ASR) related characteristics of crushed stones that are produced from rocks of perlite, andesite and limestone when zeolitic tuff (ZT) is used in the mortar mix as cement replacement in different ratios. Accelerated mortar bar experiments in accordance with ASTM C 1260 were carried out on crushed stone aggregate samples to determine the ASR. CEM I 42.5 R type cement was replaced by ZT material in the following ratios: 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40%; in order to investigate the effects of replacement on the ASR pertaining to the aggregate types, 45 mortar bar pieces were produced. The length change values of the samples were measured on the 3, 7, 14, 28, 42, 56 days according to the accelerated mortar bar method. Measured length changes for the control samples on 14(th) day were found to be 0.570% at the level of potentially harmful for perlite, 0.101% at the level of critic for andesite and 0.061% at the level of harmless for limestone. Length changes at the harmful levels were taken under control for perlite at 30 and 40%, for andesite at 20, 30 and 40% ZT replacement ratios. Length change values of all samples decrease as ZT replacement increases. As a result, ZT replacement is effective to suppress the ASR of reactive aggregates.

Gursoy, Recep; Ziyagil, Mehmet Akif; Sahin, Suleyman; Dane, Senol; Warnick, JE; Martin, WD
Handedness is a preference for the use of one of the right- or the left-hands. In the large majority of right-handers, speech is controlled by the left side of the brain. Also, the right hemisphere of the brain is usually specialized for recognizing and remembering faces and understanding relationships in space. We live in a right-handed world and that left-handers have an inherent disadvantage in using tools designed for right-handers. Left-handed persons are believed to have better developed motor, attentional and spatial functions. Some studies have explored a possible correlation between left-handedness and enhanced performance in specific sports such as baseball, cricket, fencing, soccer and tennis. The rate of the left-handed boxers was higher compared to the right-handed ones in the National Road Sport Men Boxing Club in Turkey. These results may be associated with two suggestions: 1. the left-handed subjects have an intrinsic advantage over right-handers due to superior spatio-motor skills, 2. advantage in the left-handed boxer and the left-handed other athletes may result from the nature of the game (boxing) or frequency-dependent strategic advantage.

Toklu, E.; Güney, M.S.; Işik, M.; Comakli, O.; Kaygusuz, K.
Many factors to be appropriately addressed in moving towards energy sustainability in Turkey are examined. These include harnessing sustainable energy sources, utilizing sustainable energy carriers, increasing efficiency, reducing environmental impact and improving socioeconomic acceptability. The latter factor includes community involvement and social acceptability, economic affordability and equity, lifestyles, land use and aesthetics. On the other hand, Turkey, with its young population and growing energy demand per person, its fast growing urbanization, and its economic development, has been one of the fast growing power markets of the world for the last two decades. Turkey is heavily dependent on expensive imported energy resources that place a big burden on the economy and air pollution is becoming a great environmental concern in the country. In this regard, renewable energy resources appear to be the one of the most efficient and effective solutions for clean and sustainable energy development in Turkey. Turkey's geographical location has several advantages for extensive use of most of these renewable energy sources. This article presents a review of the potential and utilization of the energy sources in Turkey.

Yaşar, Ahmet; YaylI, Nuran; Usta, Asu; YaylI, Nurettin
Photodimerization reactions of compounds 4-6 gave four new cyclobutane-containing compounds (7-9) with full control over the stereochemistry at the four stereogenic centers. These new cyclobutane- containing compounds had β-truxinic (7a), δ-truxinic (7b and 9), and ε-truxillic (8) structures. However, o-, m-, and p-hydroxy 4-azachalcones (1-3) did not give photochemical cyclization products under any conditions (in solvent or in their solid or molten states). Experimental data suggested the possibility of frontier orbital control over stereochemical behavior, so some theoretical calculations were performed. Full geometrical optimization of compounds 1-9 was performed via DFT B3LYP/6-31+G**, and their electronic structures were also investigated. The geometries of the singlet and triplet states were initially optimized by density functional theory (DFT) and the configuration interaction singles (CIS) B3LYP/3-21 +G**level. An additional calculation was performed for the triplet state using the ground-state geometry. The possible photochemical dimerization products of compounds 7-9 (a-g) and the intrinsic reaction coordinates (IRCs) of the reactions of compounds 4-6 were calculated theoretically by the DFT/3-21+G**method. The configurations (reactant, transition state, product, and reaction pathway) corresponding to the stationary points (minima or saddle points) were determined. The intrinsic reaction coordinates were followed to verify the energy profiles that connect each TS to the appropriate local minimum. The dimeric products expected from the calculations coincided with the dimers produced experimentally.

Doǧar, Çetin; Gürses, Ahmet; Açikyildiz, Metin; Özkan, Esra
This study addresses removal of a basic dye, methylene blue, from aqueous solutions by using dried Ulothrix sp. biomass as biosorbent. The effects of the initial dye concentration, contact time, temperature, solution equilibrium pH, biosorbent dosage, and mixing rate on biosorption of the dye have been investigated. It was found that 30 min is sufficient in order to reach adsorption equilibrium. The amount of methylene blue adsorbed onto Ulothrix sp. increased with increasing equilibrium pH and mixing rate, in contrary, it decreased with increasing temperature and sorbent dosage. The process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The isosteric enthalpy and entropy values were calculated as -11.8 kJ/mol and 37.5 J/(mol K), respectively. In addition, the results suggest that the physical interactions between sorbent particles and sorbate ions play an important role for the adsorption of methylene blue onto the biosorbent.

- MakaleYalnız künye2010Scopus SJRQ1Characterization of liquefaction susceptibility of sands by means of extreme void ratios and/or void ratio range
Yilmaz, Y.; Mollamahmutoglu, M.
The liquefaction susceptibility of various graded fine to medium saturated sands are evaluated by stress controlled cyclic triaxial laboratory tests. Cyclic triaxial tests are performed on reconstituted specimens having global relative density of 60%. In all cyclic triaxial tests, loading pattern is selected as a sinusoidal wave form with 1.0 Hz frequency and effective consolidation pressure is chosen as 100 kPa. Liquefaction resistance is defined as the required cyclic stress ratio causing initial liquefaction in 10 cycles during the cyclic triaxial test. The results are used to draw conclusions on the effect of the extreme void ratios and void ratio range on the liquefaction resistance of various graded sands.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2010Scopus SJRQ2Pre- and post-cyclic loading strength of silica-grouted sand
Mollamahmutoglu, M.; Yilmaz, Y.
The aim of this study is to investigate whether there is a loss in the strength of fine- to medium-grained colloidalsilica-grouted sand after cyclic loading. First, the rheological properties of colloidal silica grouts, such as gel time and viscosity, are studied. Then, appropriate colloidal silica grouts (saline solution/colloidal silica suspension ratios of 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% by weight) are selected. The selected colloidal silica grouts are then injected into fine- to medium-grained sand specimens prepared at an overall relative density of 50%. The strength of the grouted sand specimens is determined by unconfined compression tests. The effect of curing period on the strength of the grouted samples is also investigated. After performing cyclic loading tests on grouted sand specimens at different cyclic stress ratios (0, 0.13, 0.26 0.39 and 0.52), it is observed that none of the samples failed or was damaged, and that the colloidal silica grout provides fine- to medium-grained sand with a significant resistance to cyclic deformation. The samples are then subjected to unconfined compression tests, and the results show that the loss in the strength of colloidal-silica-grouted sand is insignificant.

- MakaleYalnız künye2009The Foundation of Scouting in Turkey
Taskesenlioglu, M. Yasin
Ottoman Empire officially developed scouting into which it fit a paramilitary structure according to its necessities, it aimed ottoman ( Turkish) youth to be grown up as robust people with healthy bodies. Empire's existence in a state of war during a long time, shrinking of its borders constantly and the army's need of soldiers created the necessity of making the youth to be ready for military service. This need made itself felt thoroughly and was on its peek during the World War I. As a matter of fact, Turkish scouting organization born and as a procedure of pre-draft because of the need for soldiers. This practice stood out first as Ottoman Power Associations and then Ottoman Youth Associations. The associations as mentioned before, were influenced the English scouting experience at first, and then, the German one due to state policies. In particular, Ottoman Youth Associations that were active in most part of the country during the World War I were tried to be reestablished during the Republican Era though they had lost their influence totally in 1920. The paramilitary development of Turkish scouting not only hindered the general and private initiatives but also provided basis for later periods. Scouting in the period starting in 1914 which is the official date of foundation in Turkey, has been revived officially in 1923 after War of Indepedence in spite of the negative effects during the World War I.
