- MakaleAçık Erişim2018Scopus SJRQ1Antimicrobial Carvacrol in Solution Blow-Spun Fish-Skin Gelatin Nanofibers
Liu, Fei; Saricaoglu, Furkan Tuerker; Avena-Bustillos, Roberto J.; Bridges, David F.; Takeoka, Gary R.; Wu, Vivian C. H.; Chiou, Bor-Sen; Wood, Delilah F.; McHugh, Tara H.; Zhong, Fang
Carvacrol is a volatile monoterpenic phenol and main component of oregano essential oil that shows nonspecific antimicrobial activity against foodborne pathogenic bacteria. Fish-skin gelatin (FSG) nanofibers encapsulating carvacrol (15%, 20%, 25%, and 30%, w/w FSG) were successfully prepared via solution blow-spinning (SBS) technique using lecithin (2.475% wb) as the surfactant. FSG emulsions with lower carvacrol ratios (5% and 10%) showed higher values in particle size and surface tension as well as lower values in viscosity and modulus, which led to failure of maintaining nanofibers shape. The formed carvacrol-FSG nanofibers showed round and smooth morphologies with average fiber diameters ranging from 103.2 to 138.1 nm as the carvacrol ratio increased from 15% to 30%. Carvacrol was evenly dispersed within the interior of nanofiber matrix. All carvacrol-FSG nanofibers showed inhibitive effects against the growth of Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica, and Listeria monocytogenes. Moreover, nanofibers with lower carvacrol ratios showed bigger inhibition zones for E. coli and L. monocytogenes (20 mm compared with 12.5 mm for lowest to highest carvacrol ratios, respectively). Nanofibers stored at 20 degrees C (51% RH) showed better retention (40% to 60%) for carvacrol during the first 4 weeks of storage, while nanofibers stored at 2 degrees C (70% RH) showed better retention (10% to 30%) at the end of storage.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2018Scopus SJRQ3Effects of two lichen acids isolated from Pseudevernia furfuracea (L.) Zopf in cultured human lymphocytes
Emsen, Bugrahan; Togar, Basak; Turkez, Hasan; Aslan, Ali
The present study aims at assessing the efficacies of olivetoric acid (OA) and physodic acid (PA) isolated from Pseudevernia furfuracea (L.) Zopf (Parmeliaceae) in human lymphocytes (HLs) in vitro. 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide and lactate dehydrogenase assays were performed to establish cytotoxicity in HLs. Besides, oxidative stress and genotoxicity were monitored by estimating the changes of total oxidative stress (TOS) and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG) levels, respectively, in HLs. At the same time, OA- and PA-induced total antioxidant capacity (TAC) levels in HLs were determined. Although especially low concentrations of OA (IC50 = 109.94 mg/L) and PA (IC50 = 665.49 mg/L) did not show cytotoxic effect at high levels in HLs, it was revealed that cytotoxicity was significantly (p < 0.05) associated with oxidative stress and genotoxicity via correlation analysis. While TOS level in HLs did not statistically (p > 0.05) increase in the presence of all treatments (0.5-100 mg/L) of PA, TAC level was increased by PA applications in certain concentrations (0.5-10 mg/L). Overall, the obtained data indicate that OA and especially PA as lichen compounds that do not cause oxidative stress can be a new resource of therapeutics as recognized in the present study with their high antioxidant features.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2018Scopus SJRQ1Thermoeconomic multi-objective optimization of an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) adapted to an existing solid waste power plant
Özahi, Emrah; Tozlu, Alperen; Abuşoğlu, Ayşegül
In this paper, thermodynamic and thermoeconomic analyses, and also optimization of an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) were performed. The system was adapted to an existing solid waste power plant with a 5.66 MW installed power capacity in order to produce additional power from the exhaust gas. The actual operating data of the plant were utilized during all stages of the analyses. The originality of this paper is based on the analysis of the possibility of the energy conversion of an exhaust gas with a temperature of 566 & #x000B0;C into the electricity by utilizing an ORC system in the concept of waste-to-energy. Four different working fluids: toluene, octamethyltrisiloxane (MDM), octamethyl cyclotetrasiloxane (D4) and n-decane were considered and analyzed for the current system. This is also another novelty of this study due to lack of such a study, in the open literature, that deals with an ORC utilized for a typical municipal solid waste power plant. According to the thermoeconomic analyses, toluene was found to be the optimum working fluid with the maximum power output of 584.6 kW and the exergy efficiency of 15.69%. The optimization of the cycle was performed by using the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm method (NSGA-II) in MATLAB software environment. The optimization results were compared and the deviations of the net power output and the total cost rate were evaluated as & #x2212;5.89%, & #x2212;3.51 & #x00024;/h for toluene; 0.96%, & #x2212;3.60 & #x00024;/h for MDM; 8.45%, & #x2212;2.04 & #x00024;/h for D4 and 2.00%, & #x2212;5.54 & #x00024;/h for n-decane, respectively.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2018Scopus SJRQ1Optimization of reactive powder concrete by means of barite aggregate for both neutrons and gamma rays
Gökçe, H. Süleyman; Yalçınkaya, Çağlar; Tuyan, Murat
High performance concrete has been often preferred in special engineering structures and in challenging composites products. Researchers have recently focused on the radiation shielding characteristics of these type concrete mixtures due to rising nuclear industry in the developing world. In the study, performance of reactive powder concrete was researched with regard to gamma-ray and neutron attenuation when its normal weight aggregate replaced with heavyweight aggregate (barite). For this purpose, reactive powder concrete mixtures were prepared 100% quartz aggregate, 100% barite aggregate and their blending 50–50%, by volume. Some physical and mechanical characteristics such as density, compressive strength, fracture energy, flexural strength and modulus of elasticity of the mixtures were determined. Gamma-ray attenuation coefficients and transmission thickness values were theoretically established for commonly known gamma energies (661.7, 1173.2 and 1332.5 keV). Optimization of the reactive powder mixtures was performed for both neutron and gamma-ray attenuation at 8 MeV. As a result, barite significantly increased the gamma-ray attenuation coefficients of reactive powder concrete. The mechanical performance of reactive powder concrete, however, was markedly reduced as a result of barite substitution. Replacement of quartz by barite aggregate has a more adverse impact on flexural strength than that of compressive strength. A mix that contains 40% barite aggregate of total aggregate volume was found as an optimum RPC mixture for simultaneously shielding neutrons and gamma rays.

Dertli, Enes; Colquhoun, Ian J.; Côté, Gregory L.; Le Gall, Gwénaëlle; Narbad, Arjan
Cereal-associated Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) are well known for homopolymeric exopolysaccharide (EPS) production. Herein, the structure of an EPS isolated from sourdough isolate Lactobacillus brevis E25 was determined. A modified BHI medium was used for production of EPS-E25 in order to eliminate potential contaminants. Analysis of sugar monomers in EPS revealed that glucose was the only sugar present. Structural characterisation of EPS by NMR and methylation analysis revealed that E25 produced a highly branched α-glucan with (α1 → 3) and (α1 → 6) glycosidic linkages, and was similar in structure to a previously reported EPS from Lactobacillus reuteri 180. The 1H and 13C NMR data were contrasted with newly recorded data for known polysaccharides (alternan, commercial dextran) which also contain α-(1,3,6)Glc branch points. It was found in both E25 EPS and alternan that NMR parameters could be used to distinguish glucose residues that had the same substitution pattern but occupied different positions in the structure.

Climate change and increasing temperatures are global concerns. Well adapted to desert life, the camel (Camelus dromedarius) lives most of its life under high environmental stress and represents an ideal model for studying desert adaptation among mammals. Glutathione peroxidase is the principal antioxidant defense system capable of protecting cells from oxidative stress. Glutathione Peroxidase from camel liver was purified (11.64-fold purification with 1.73% yield) and characterized The molecular weight of the enzyme was estimated to be about 69 kDa by gel filtration and 34 kDa by SDS-PAGE, implying dimeric structure of the protein. An optimum temperature of 47°C and an optimum pH of 7.8 were found. This enzyme is a typical SH-enzyme that is inhibited by D,L-dithiothreitol and β-mercaptoethanol and sensitive to bivalent cations. The enzyme had common specificity toward hydroperoxides and high specificity for reduced glutathione. The Km and Vmax values for hydrogen peroxide and reduced glutathione were 0.57 and 2.10 mM and 1.11 and 0.87 U/mg, respectively. The purified enzyme contained 16 ng of selenium per mg of protein. Our results show that the camel glutathione peroxidse exhibits properties different of those reported for other mammalian species. Lower molecular weight, homodimeric structure, higher optimum temperature, relatively low optimum pH, high affinity for hydrogen peroxide at low concentration of reduced glutathione and very low content of selenium could be explained by adaptation of the camel to living in the desert under intense environmental stress.

Removal of heavy metals from wastewater is a significant issue because it prevents environmental-based concerns and impacts a large number of diseases and disorders. Many low-cost natural materials have been offered recently as possible precursors to commercial synthetic adsorbents. Ultra-fine calcite, one of these natural materials, has been investigated as a potential commercial adsorbent. Response surface designs are effective experimental techniques to investigate the heavy metal adsorption capacity of ultra-fine calcite. In the present study, one such response surface design, Box-Behnken, is used in order to optimize adsorption factors, such as pH level, initial metal concentration, stirring rate and adsorption time, and to determine the heavy metal capacity of this adsorbent. Our results show that the proposed methodology is an effective approach to optimizing the adsorption process and to maximize the heavy metal capacity.

Şahin, Rıdvan
Normal neutrosophic set, which allows a combination of the normal fuzzy number and the neutrosophic number, is a powerful tool for handling the incompleteness, indeterminacy and inconsistency of evaluation information. Based on the opinion of prioritized aggregation operators developed to describe the prioritization relationships among several attributes, this paper investigates some prioritized aggregation operators for aggregating the normal neutrosophic information, such as normal neutrosophic prioritized weighted averaging operator and normal neutrosophic prioritized weighted geometric operator, and then extends these operators to the generalized prioritized weighted aggregation operators, including normal neutrosophic generalized prioritized weighted averaging operator and normal neutrosophic generalized prioritized weighted geometric operator, respectively. They can take into account the prioritization facts in the aggregated information. Moreover, some of their desirable properties are investigated in detail. A multiple attribute decision-making method is developed for solving a kind of problems in which the decision attributes have different priority level commonly and they take the form of normal neutrosophic numbers. Finally, an illustrative example based on the prioritization relationship over the evaluation data is given to depict the effectiveness and feasibility of the developed decision-making method, which are then compared to the existing approaches.

The kind of energy that buildings need changes, like heating energy, cooling energy, electrical energy, and thermal energy for hot top water. Usually, the processes or systems that produce thermal energy emit pollutants while they produce heat because of the fossil fuels they use. A lower consumption of thermal energy will contribute not only to a reduction in the running costs but also in the reduction of pollutant emissions that contribute to the greenhouse effect and a lesser dependence of the hospital on the external power supply. Cogeneration or CHP (combined heat and power) is the system that produces power and usable heat simultaneously. Combined production of mechanical or electrical and thermal energy using a simple energy source, such as oil, coal, natural or liquefied gas, biomass, or the sun, affords remarkable energy savings and frequently makes it possible to operate with greater efficiency when compared to a system producing heat and power separately. Because of the life standard of humanity in new age, energy sources must be continually improved and updated. For this reason, the installation of a system for the simultaneous generation of electrical, heating, and cooling energy would be one of the best solutions if we want to have qualified energy and reduce investment and operating costs and meet ecological requirements. This study aims to bring out the contributions of cogeneration systems to the environment and sustainability by saving the energy and reducing the emissions.

Can, Ömer
Masonry structures are economical, easy to construct and has important advantages such as the use of natural materials. In Turkey, these structures have been heavily built especially with traditional construction methods and nowadays they are popular as well. Therefore, the reinforcement of masonry structures and seismic safety are of paramount importance. Masonry walls are not naturally stable and cannot be considered as homogeneous structures so it is difficult to predict their behavior under load by using numerical methods. Supportive framework of the mathematical model and the data of the experimental studies are required. In this study, 36 wall blocks were prepared in 900 × 900 × 200 mm using hollow masonry brick, blend brick and aerated concrete and these blocks are reinforced with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer in both directions by using three different methods. For the analysis of retrofit brick walls produced and reinforced with different materials, ASTM E591 test method was used. At the end of the experiment period; shear strength performances of the reinforcement methods of the elements, their deformation and energy dissipation capacities were evaluated. According to results, maximum shear strength performance was observed at the masonry panel strengthened by two face. Maximum load value was 172.63 Kn. Also maximum dissipation capacity was observed at the masonry wall reinforced with CFRP covered diagonally. Maximum energy dissipation capacity was 317.1 J.

Calcite is utilized as a filler mineral in the industries such as plastics, rubber, and paint, to gain products with a variety of features. In order to use a calcite ore as a filler, some specific physical and physico-chemical properties are required such as ultra-fine sizes and conversion of hydrophilic to hydrophobic structure. In the present study, for these purposes, surfaces of the ultra-fine calcite powder (d50=2.94 μm) were coated by a mechano-chemical process with calcium stearate [Ca(C17H35COO)2] in a stirred ball mill. The influence of operating parameters such as calcite filling-ratio, ball-filling ratio, operation speed, grinding time and chemical dosage on the active ratio (%) was systematically examined. Then, the properties of modified calcite product were measured and evaluated by contact angle, TGA, DTA, FTIR, and SEM. The results showed that the mechano-chemical technology is very effective for modifying the surface of micronized calcite products using calcium stearate chemical.

This paper presents a finite element model based on the first-order shear deformation theory for free vibration and buckling analyses of functionally graded (FG) sandwich beams. The present element has 3 N + 7 degrees-of-freedom for an N-layer beam. Lagrange's equations are employed for derivation of the equations of motion. Two types of FG sandwich beams are considered: (a) Type A with FG faces and homogeneous ceramic core, and (b) Type B with homogeneous ceramic and metal faces and FG core. Natural frequencies and buckling loads are calculated numerically for different boundary conditions, power-law indices, and span-to-height ratios. Accuracy of the present element is demonstrated by comparisons with the results available, and discussions are made on the results given in graphs and tables for the sandwich beams considered.

Ayan, Tuba Yakıcı; Pabuçcu, Hakan
Knowledge economy is an economy that produces, distributes and uses information. Nowadays, investment in quality information rather than capital inputs is becoming more and more important for countries to develop and to be able to compete with each other. The increasing speed in the creation and spreading of knowledge has made it a crucial component in economic development. It is a fact that the countries that make large investments in information factors experience a fast and sustainable growth and are the most dynamic and competitive countries in the world. In this paper, we use context dependent DEA to measure the relative efficiency of the European Union (EU) countries’, including Turkey, knowledge economy policy based on 2016 data. In addition, we implement factor-specific DEA in order to identify achievable targets in short term for each output of countries. Four outputs and three inputs were used in the analysis. The results showed that Germany is clearly ahead of other countries such as France, England, Malta and the Netherlands. Turkey, on the other hand, separates from other countries and is the least efficient one. The reason for this separation is that Turkey produces less output than expected relative to its facilities. Another conclusion of the paper is that the countries’ patent applications and high-tech exports are more inefficient than other knowledge economy outputs.

Demirtas, Muhammet; Atli, Kadri C.; Yanar, Harun; Purcek, Gencaga
The effects of grain refinement and phase composition on superplasticity and damping capacity of eutectic Zn-5Al and eutectoid Zn-22Al alloys were investigated. For grain refinement, equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) was applied to these alloys. ECAP completely eliminated the as-cast lamellar microstructures of both alloys and resulted in ultrafine-grained structures along with room temperature superplasticity. Furthermore, these microstructural changes with ECAP increased the damping capacity of both alloys in the dynamic hysteresis region, where damping arises from viscous sliding of phase/grain boundaries. Dynamic recrystallization at the surface and thermally activated viscous motion of grain/phase boundaries at the subsurface of the samples of both alloys were proposed as the damping mechanisms in the region where the alloys showed combined aspects of static/dynamic hysteresis damping behavior. Although the grain size is larger in Zn-5Al compared to Zn-22Al, it showed higher damping capacity due to the different sliding characteristics of its phase boundaries.
