Enrichment of food products with beneficial Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) is an important methodology used to develop functional food products. Lactobacillus reuteri E81 was successfully nanoencapsulated into poly (vinyl alcohol)-based nanofibers for its application to the surface of fish fillets. The Scanning Electron Microscopy analysis confirmed the nanoencapsulation of L. reuteri E81 in electrospun nanofibers (LRNF) that had an average diameter of 381.83 ± 130.69 nm. LAB growth in rainbow trout fillets and fatty fish (mackerel) and were found to be 2.92 and in the range of 3.27 and 2.66 log CFU/g, respectively. Importantly, the antioxidative characteristics of fish fillets significantly increased following their coating with LRNF. The results revealed a significant increase in the inhibition of free radicals in the samples treated with nanoencapsulated L. reuteri as compared to control group fish fillet samples. DPPH activity significantly increased to 40.24%, 44.96%, 44.97 in mackerel samples treated with nanoencapsulated L. reuteri (MLR) and increased to 19.76%, 20.87%, 21.46% in rainbow samples treated with nanoencapsulated L. reuteri (RLR). MLR samples exhibited the highest ABTS radical-scavenging activity (1631 μmol TEAC/g). FRAP value of MLR samples was found to be 1.70 times higher than the control group samples.

A study on 3D graphene synthesized directly on Glass/FTO substrates: Its Raman mapping and optical properties

    Bayram, Ozkan

In this study, vertically oriented (3D) graphene nanostructures (VGN) were obtained on Glass and Fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) substrates at relatively low temperatures (approaximatelly at 400 °C) by using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) technique. VGNs were characterized using Raman, Uv–Vis and SEM spectroscopies, respectively. Raman spectroscopy showed that growth temperature significantly affected VGN formation and film quality. The layer structures of these VGNs were also confirmed by Raman mapping. The most important data obtained from this study is that although the applied radio frequency (RF) power is the same, the growth temperature significantly affects the graphene formation and morphologies. This was attributed to the fact that CH4 decomposition was very difficult at low temperatures. The optical transmittance of VGNs ranged from 50% to 95% (at 550 nm wavelength) and their electrical conductivity was also determined to be between 5.94 kohm/sqr and 11.2 kohm/sqr. The electrical and optical properties of VGNs, which have a large surface area, indicated that they may be an alternative material for sensor, solar cell and supercapacitor applications.

Herbal medicines are efficient to reduce side effects in the fight against glioblastoma, which plays a critical role within brain cancer species. The recent studies designated for testing the effects of lichens that have shown numerous anticancer activities on glioblastoma so far. In the present study, different concentrations of water extract obtained from Usnea longissima Ach. were used in order to determine cytotoxic (via 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide and lactate dehydrogenase tests), antioxidant (via total antioxidant capacity test), pro-oxidant (via total oxidant status test) and genotoxic (via 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine test) effects of them on human U87MG-glioblastoma cancer cell lines. Primary mixed glial-neuronal non-cancerous cells from Sprague-Dawley rats were also utilized to measure the effects of treatments on non-cancerous cells. Based on median inhibitory concentration values, the data belonged to non-cancerous cells (2486.71 mg/L) showed distinct towering compared to U87MG (80.93 mg/L) cells. The viability of non-cancerous and U87MG cells exposed to extract is decreased in a dose dependent manner. It was also showed that low concentrations of extract notably increased total antioxidant capacity on non-cancerous cells. In addition, various phenolic compounds in extract were detected through high-perfonnance liquid chromatography. The recent results encourage that extract will be able to have therapeutic potential against glioblastoma.

Accurate and reliable U-value assessment of argon-filled double glazed windows: A numerical and experimental investigation

    Cuce, Erdem

U-value assessment is a significant process to be able to evaluate the thermal insulation performance of building materials notably windows. About 60% of energy losses from building envelope is attributed to windows, hence accurate and reliable thermal resistance evaluation of glazed areas is of vital importance for a sensitive energy demand analysis of buildings. U-value assessment of windows is usually conducted through theoretical and numerical methods in literature. However, dwellers frequently complain about the insufficient thermal insulation performance of commercial glazing products when compared to the reported U-values in datasheets. This inconvenience arises from the lack of comprehensive experimental tests which simulate the actual operating conditions. Therefore, in this research, argon filled double glazed windows, which is one the most common fenestration products in market, is numerically and experimentally analysed in terms of U-value performance. Although computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses reveal that the U-value of the reference sample (4 mm pane + 20 mm argon + 4 mm pane) is 0.89 W/m(2)K, which is in good accordance with the theoretical data (0.80 W/m(2)K), it is observed from the environmental chamber tests that the U-value in simulated operating conditions is 1.25, 1.18 and 1.32 W/m(2)K for top, centre and lower positions of the window sample. The tests are repeated for accuracy verification, and the U-value is found to be 1.23, 1.18 and 1.31 W/m(2)K for the said points. In this respect, it is concluded that thermal bridges and edge effects play a key role in actual U-value performance of glazing products. Therefore, experimental performance figures are recommended to be utilised in energy demand analyses of buildings. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

THE COOPERATION BETWEEN METHYL JASMONATE AND SALICYLIC ACID TO PROTECT SOYBEAN (GLYCINE MAX L.) FROM SALINITY

Seckin-Dinler, Burcu; Tasci, Eda; Sarisoy, Ufkun; Gul, Volkan

Methyl jasmonate (MeJA), a methyl ester of jasmonic acid, is a naturally produced phytohormone that regulates plant growth and development by maintaining the morphologic, physiological, and biochemical development of plants. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of methyl jasmonate and endogenous salicylic acid on the stimulation and scavenging of reactive oxygen species (ROS) under salt stress in soybean roots and leaves. Soybean leaves were sprayed with 0.5 mu M methyl jasmonate for 4 days, followed by exposure to 200 mM NaCl. Foliar application of MeJA did not change the leaf area; however, it increased the relative water content (RWC), chlorophyll content, relative electrolyte leakage (REL), and root and shoot fresh weight, and it lessened the stress-induced oxidative damage by decreasing the levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), malondialdehyde (MDA). Curiously, catalase (CAT) enzyme and isoenzyme activity, and also endogenous salicylic acid (SA) were decreased by MeJA treatment. As a result, this study firstly determined that MeJA treatment improved the soybean performance under salinity by acting role as an antioxidant and cooperating with SA.

This study aimed in sedentary subjected to progressive relaxation training (PRT) for determination of the effect of this exercise on MDA, OHdG, and NO levels and SOD and GPx activities. Experimental design was used in this research. Seven healthy, sedentary volunteers were included in the study. All subjects were male and within 15 to 18 years of age. Jacabson's Progressive Muscle Relaxation Training was applied to the volunteers for 6 six weeks. Before and after the chronic and acute exercise, blood samples were taken from the subjects, and K-Related Samples Friedman test was used for the analysis of repeated measurements and for the comparison of pre- and post-exercise data and chronic and acute mode data. In addition, 2-Related Samples Wilcoxon test was used in the evaluation of the groups as pairs. Our findings showed increases in MDA PRT, and no statistically significant increase in NO levels after PRT in sedentary volunteers. When the effect of relaxation exercise on the antioxidant system is considered, both SOD and GPx activities increased. The effect of PRT on 8-OHdG has been found to exhibit significant increase after PRT. It can easily be said that PRT may be helpful in patients with chronic disease, especially for obtaining a healing and a high quality sleep. In addition, in order for the athletes to feel well and to use their muscles actively, PRT may be helpful. We can conclude that, with respect to human health and physiology, no controversy may be seen in progressive muscle relaxation training.

Investigation of alloying effects on XRF parameters of 3d transition metals in Permendur49, Kovar and Ti50Co50 alloys

Alim, Bunyamin; Ugurlu, Mine; Han, Ibrahim; Demir, Lutfu

The alloying effects on X-ray fluorescence (XRF) parameters such as K shell fluorescence cross-sections (sigma(K alpha), sigma(K beta) and sigma(K)), K shell average fluorescence yields (omega(K)) and K to L shell vacancy transfer probabilities (eta(KL)) of V, Ti, Fe, Co and Ni 3d transition metals in Permendur49 (Fe49Co49V2), Kovar (Fe54Ni29Co17) and Ti50Co50 alloys have been carried out by X-ray fluorescence studies. K X-ray intensity ratios of these 3d transition metals in both pure form and present alloys have been measured following excitation by 22.69 keV X-rays from a 10 mCi Cd-109 radioactive point source. The characteristic K-X-ray spectra from samples were detected by a high-resolution Si(Li) solid-state detector. The investigated fluorescence parameters of present 3d transition elements in alloys indicate significant differences with respect to the pure metals. Consequently, the observed change of the investigated fluorescence parameters can be attributed to the delocalization and charge transfer phenomena between the 3d elements in alloys. Alloying effect on K shell X-ray fluorescence cross-sections and yields in Ti-Ni based shape memory alloys

Alim, Bunyamin; Han, Ibrahim; Demir, Lutfu

K shell X-ray fluorescence cross-sections (sigma(K alpha), sigma(K beta) and sigma(K)), and K shell fluorescence yields (omega(K)) of Ti, Ni both in pure metals and in different alloy compositions (TixNi1-x; x = 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7) were measured by using energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) technique. The samples were excited by 22.69 keV X-rays from a 10 mCi Cd-109 radioactive point source and K X rays emitted by samples were counted by a high resolution Si(Li) solid-state detector coupled to a 4 K multichannel analyzer (MCA). The alloying effects on the X-ray fluorescence (XRF) parameters of Ti-Ni shape memory alloys (SMAs) were investigated. It is clearly observed that alloying effect causes to change in K shell XRF parameter values in Ti-Ni based SMAs for different compositions of x. Also, the present investigation makes it possible to perform reliable interpretation of experimental sigma(K alpha), sigma(K beta) and omega(K) values for Ti and Ni in SMAs and can also provide quantitative information about the changes of K shell X-ray fluorescence cross sections and fluorescence yields of these metals with alloy composition. EFFECTS OF MENTHA PULEGIUM EXTRACT AND VITAMIN E SUPPLEMENTATION ON LAYING HENS PERFORMANCE, EGG QUALITY, ANTIOXIDANT ENZYME ACTIVITY IN SERUM

Bolukbasi, Saziye Canan; Urusan, Hilal; Erhan, Muhammet Kuddusi

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the supplementation of Mentha pulegium extract (MPE) and vitamin E on performance, egg quality and antioxidant enzyme activities of laying hens. The experiment study was conducted with 120 40 weeks old laying hens (Lohman LSL). Hens were given five dietary treatments of which each was repeated six times on 4 birds. Hens in the experiment groups were given 50 mg / kg MPE, 100 mg / kg MPE, 50 mg / kg vitamin E, 100 mg/kg vitamin E and the hens in control group were fed on basal diet. MPE and vitamin E supplementation did not make any change on feed consumption and egg weight but improved feed conversion ratio. Addition of 100 mg / kg MPE and vitamin E significantly increased the egg production. No significant difference were found between control and experimental groups in terms of shell thickness, yellowness, shape index and ratio of albumen, yolk and egg shell. However, MPE and vitamin E supplementation improved the shell breaking strength and Hough Unit. Dietary supplementation of MPE and vitamin E did not change AST, ALT, TG, cholesterol, HDL, LDL and glucose level in serum. Serum MDA value was decreased by MPE and vitamin E addition. Serum MDA levels were reduced by addition of MPE and vitamin E, but there was no difference in SOD activity among the groups. The addition of 50 and 100 mg / kg vitamin E significantly reduced the GSH-Px activity. As a result, 100 mg / kg MPE supplementation can be recommended as an alternative to antibiotic feed additives.

THE MOST APPROPRIATE EARTHQUAKE RECORD GROUPS FOR DYNAMIC ANALYSIS OF A BUILDING

Atmaca, Barbaros; Ergun, Mustafa; Ates, Sevket

In this paper, seven real earthquake records are scaled according to Eurocode 8 design acceleration spectrum by using SESCAP (Selection and Scaling Program). SESCAP is a scaling program based on time domain scaling method and developed by using MATLAB, GUI software. Real and scaled earthquake records are used for linear time history analyses of a six-storied reinforced concrete building modeled as spatial by SAP2000. Eurocode 8 allows the use of real earthquake records for linear and nonlinear time history analyses of structures. In the case of using three earthquake records in linear and nonlinear time history analyses, maximum results of structural responses are used for design of structures. If at least seven time history analyses are performed, the mean responses of the structures are taken into account rather than the maximum results. For the selection of maximum results of structural response from thirty five groups are created by calculating combination of threes of seven real and scaled earthquake records, and another group including all of the seven real and scaled earthquake records are created for selection of mean. Relative floor displacements along X axis of the building are preferred as structural response of the building in this study. It is seen that differences between mean value and maximum value of the relative floor displacements along X axis of the building induced by seven and three scaled earthquake records respectively are less than ones obtained from real earthquake records.
