Efil Kutluoğlu, Esra; Öz Orhan, Elif; Bayram, Özkan; Bilge Ocak, Sema

The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of gamma (γ)-ray irradiation on capacitance and conductance features of Al/Graphene/Al2O3/p-Si structure. Graphene has been grown on copper foil by the Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) method and transferred onto Al2O3/p-Si by the wet transfer method. After Al/Graphene/Al2O3/p-Si structure has been exposed to 30 kGy and 60 kGy γ-ray irradiation, capacitance, and conductance measurements have been accomplished at 300 K. Electrical parameters have been compared before and after γ-ray irradiation for 50 kHz and 500 kHz. These results have been confirmed that capacitance and conductance values have increased after γ-ray irradiation and, have decreased when the radiation dose was increased from 30 kGy to 60 kGy. It has been observed that series resistance has decreased after 30 kGy radiation dose and has increased with increasing radiation dose.

Extraction of Phenolic Compounds from Cornelian Cherry (Cornus mas L.) Using Microwave and Ohmic Heating Assisted Microwave Methods

Kutlu, Naciye; Isci, Asli; Sakiyan, Ozge; Yilmaz, Asim Egemen

In this study, it was aimed to extract bioactive compounds (phenolics and anthocyanins) from cornelian cherry (Cornus mas L.) using microwave (ME) and ohmic heating assisted microwave extraction (OH-ME) as an alternative to maceration (M). Total phenolic compound (TPC), total monomeric anthocyanin content (TMAC), antioxidant activity (AA), water-soluble solid matter (WSSM), color values, and pH of the extracts were determined. The effect of extraction time, solid to solvent ratio, microwave power, electrical field strength, and holding time during ohmic heating on extraction characteristics was investigated for different methods. Ohmic heating application prior to extraction has enhanced the TPC yield by 1.1 and 5.4-folds compared to that of ME and M, respectively. Moreover, the extraction time was decreased by approximately 42 and 95% as regards ME and M, respectively. The highest TMAC value (0.65 mg cya-3-glu/g dry matter) was observed with OH-ME. The experimental data obtained by ME and OH-ME methods was fitted to the Peleg model to describe the TPC yields. These results indicate that the combined application of ohmic heating and microwave extraction is a potential alternative method for total phenolic compounds extraction from cornelian cherry due to increased yields and reduced extraction times.

Assessment of Artificial Intelligence Models for Estimating Lengths of Gradually Varied Flow Profiles

Niazkar, Majid; Hajizadeh Mishi, Farshad; Eryilmaz Türkkan, Gökçen

The study of water surface profiles is beneficial to various applications in water resources management. In this study, two artificial intelligence (AI) models named the artificial neural network (ANN) and genetic programming (GP) were employed to estimate the length of six steady GVF profiles for the first time. The AI models were trained using a database consisting of 5154 dimensionless cases. A comparison was carried out to assess the performances of the AI techniques for estimating lengths of 330 GVF profiles in both mild and steep slopes in trapezoidal channels. The corresponding GVF lengths were also calculated by 1-step, 3-step, and 5-step direct step methods for comparison purposes. Based on six metrics used for the comparative analysis, GP and the ANN improve five out of six metrics computed by the 1-step direct step method for both mild and steep slopes. Moreover, GP enhanced GVF lengths estimated by the 3-step direct step method based on three out of six accuracy indices when the channel slope is higher and lower than the critical slope. Additionally, the performances of the AI techniques were also investigated depending on comparing the water depth of each case and the corresponding normal and critical grade lines. Furthermore, the results show that the more the number of subreaches considered in the direct method, the better the results will be achieved with the compensation of much more computational efforts. The achieved improvements can be used in further studies to improve modeling water surface profiles in channel networks and hydraulic structure designs.

Production of lactose derivative hetero-oligosaccharides from whey by glucansucrase E81 and determination of prebiotic functions

    İspirli, Hümeyra; Dertli, Enes

Bioactive oligosaccharides are important compounds for development of functional foods and ingredients. In this study, lactose derivative hetero-oligosaccharides were produced by acceptor reaction of glucansucrase E81 with whey. The synthesis of oligosaccharides was monitored by Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) analysis followed by 1H and 13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy analysis which demonstrated the glycosylation of lactose with α-(1 → 2), α-(1 → 3) and α-(1 → 4) linkages. Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis demonstrated the formation of DP 7 oligosaccharides from whey. The synthesized oligosaccharides were not digested under in vitro human gastric juice and α-amylase conditions. The prebiotic effect of lactose derivative hetero-oligosaccharides was tested and no growth in pathogenic strains was observed whereas certain probiotic strains utilised lactose derivative hetero-oligosaccharides as Carbon source and their growth was promoted. These findings can be important to reveal the potential of glucansucrases to produce functional oligosaccharides from different sources including waste materials.

Determination of flexural properties of hybrid composite using Cowper-Symonds rate-dependent material model

    Erbayrak, Engin

This study addressed to determine the flexural properties of hybrid composite laminates (HCAFRE) under the strain rate sensitivity. The hybrid composite laminate was formed as consecutive stacking of a sequence of plain woven carbon fiber reinforced epoxy (CFRE) and a plain-woven aramid fiber reinforced epoxy (AFRE) laminates. The flexural tests were carried out at four different strain rates (0.01, 0.11, 0.55, 1.1 s−1) to determine the strain rate sensitivity of the HCAFRE. Moreover, the strain rate sensitivity of CFRE and AFRE was also determined individually. The effect of different fiber orientations (0°, 45°, and 90°) on the flexural properties of the composite laminates were also investigated at the scope of this study. In numerical analysis, composite laminates (CFRE, AFRE, and HCAFRE) were constituted in LS-DYNA finite element program using the Cowper-Symonds material model (MAT 112) which includes strain rate dependency. Consequently, it was seen that the experimental and numerical results were indicated a similar tendency to each other. Therefore, it was understood that the Cowper-Symonds material model is suited for the flexural behavior model of composite laminates under different strain rates.

Uslu, Emin; Gavgali, Mehmet; Erdal, Mehmet Okan; Yazman, Şakir; Gemi, Lokman

Fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composites are widely used in many structural applications thanks to their exceptional properties. In recent years, the use of electrospinning nanofibers with unique properties as reinforcement agents has attracted a great deal of attention in improving the performance of these composites. Although there are many promising studies on this subject in the literature, there are still many issues that need to be investigated. In this study, an experimental research reporting on the production and mechanical properties of two-phase polymer matrix composites reinforced with various types of thermoplastic nanofibers is presented. Nanofiber mats were produced from N66, PAN, PVA, and PVC polymers by electrospinning technique. Composites were obtained by embedding these nanofibers into epoxy resin by using vacuum infusion process. Mechanical properties of the composites were determined by performing tensile tests and the results were compared. The morphologies of nanofibers and the fracture surfaces of the composites were examined with SEM. Finally, statistical evaluations were carried out using mechanical data. According to tensile test results, the best ultimate tensile strength of 38.04 ± 3.7 MPa, elongation of 2.46 ± 0.4 % and toughness of 532 ± 137 kJ/m3 were obtained from N66 nanofiber composite, while PVA nanofiber composite was the most favorable in terms of Young's modulus (2.40 GPa). It was observed that the polymer type significantly affected the performance of the composite. In addition to the best mechanical properties, N66 composite was found to be more stable and reproducible than other specimens. Due to the good impregnation of nanofibers, it was conclusively determined that the use of vacuum infusion process is suitable for the production of these materials.

Houicher, Abderrahmane; Alkay, Zuhal; Bourahla, Mahdi; Dertli, Enes

This study aimed to isolate and identify different Enterococcus spp. from diverse sources including dromedary raw milk, rhizospheric soil and natural saline water samples and to determine their antimicrobial activities and safety aspects. From these sources, distinct strains of E. faecium, E. durans, E. hirae, and E. gallinarum species were detected. No virulence factors were observed for six Enterococcus strains while none of the tested Enterococci harboured the genes encoding cytolysin and aggregation substance. All tested strains showed a high sensitivity to many antibiotics, particularly vancomycin, and exhibited a remarkable antagonist activity toward Salmonella typhimurium, Fusarium graminearum and Penicillium expansum. PCR testing of enterocins revealed the co-presence of entA and entB among all tested Enterococci. No hemolytic reaction was also detected in Enterococci isolates, except for six strains. Based on these findings, potential candidates for use as biocontrol agents or probiotic starters were selected for further studies.

District heating and electricity production based on biogas produced from municipal WWTPs in Turkey: A comprehensive case study

Abusoglu, Aysegul; Tozlu, Alperen; Anvari-Moghaddam, Amjad

In this paper, district heating (DH) potentials of the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) based on their biogas, electricity, and heat productions are considered. Two district heating scenarios are developed: (i) DH Scenario I which is based on both excess biogas storage of the WWTP and exhaust gas of the cogeneration with the actual power output, (ii) DH Scenario II which is based on the exhaust gas of the cogeneration with the increased power output using all the biogas produced. In DH Scenario I, it is found that 458 dwellings can be heated via the DH system proposed considering only the waste heat of the cogeneration. In addition, the natural gas consumption of 1112 dwellings with the same annual heating load can also be met using the purified biogas. In DH Scenario II, the electricity production could be increased to 1643 kWh by burning all the biogas produced in the cogeneration plant. In this scenario, the annual heating load of 755 dwellings in Gaziantep province can be covered using the waste heat in the DH system. The payback period for the DH Scenario I is calculated as 2.5 years, while for the DH Scenario II, it is obtained as 2 years.

A novel approach to finding optimum operating conditions of design factors for the grinding experiment

Uçurum, Metin; Özdemir, Akın; Teke, Çağatay; Tekin, İlker

The efficiency of grinding experiments is an important issue for many industries. In this paper, a central composite design-based methodology was proposed to investigate the four design factors that affect the particle sizes. The four design factors were specified as mill speed (% of Nc), ball filling ratio (fc), powder filling ratio (jb) and grinding time (min). Another important issue was how to obtain an optimum operating condition for four design factors. For this particular purpose, a novel dual response optimization model was proposed using the particle sizes (d 10, d 50, and d 90) and the span value concept. This proposed approach was compared to the desirability function-based optimization concept. The verification study of the experiment was also carried out. The results of the grinding experiment runs showed that the optimum operating conditions were mill speed 73.495% of Nc, ball filling ratio 0.354, powder filling ratio 0.157, and grinding time 70 min. In addition, d 10, d 50, and d 90 were found 3.31 µm, 12µm, and 45.6 µm, respectively. The span value was also found at 3.52.

Özdemir, Akın; Teke, Çağatay; Serencam, Hüseyin; Uçurum, Metin; Gündoğdu, Ali

Lead (Pb) removal process from wastewater is an important issue to prevent health problems for people. For this particular purpose, a low-cost adsorbent may be beneficial for improving the adsorption capacity for the Pb removal process. The aims of this paper are four-fold. First of all, a D-optimal experimental design was selected to reduce experimental runs and its cost. Second, the effect of four adsorption design factors, stirring speed (rpm), adsorbent dosage (g), pH level, and initial metal concentration (ppm), was examined. Also, the yellow natural stone, which is from Bayburt, Turkey, was used as a cheap adsorbent for the Pb removal process from the solu-tion. Third, a novel weighted mean-squared error optimization model was developed to obtain optimal adsorption levels for adsorption factors. Besides, a verification study was conducted to verify the results of the adsorption experiment. Finally, the lead (Pb(II)) removal capacity of the yellow Bayburt stone was obtained to be 46.031 mg/g, and the results of the experiment from the proposed methodology showed a good performance for the removal study.

Alkali-activated and geopolymer materials developed using innovative manufacturing techniques: A critical review

    Gökçe, H.S.; Tuyan, M.; Nehdi, M.L.

The manufacturing of geopolymers and alkali-activated materials for precast and cast in-situ construction applications could be achieved using suitable production techniques, such as one-part production, pre-setting pressure and hot pressing, two-stage concreting, and 3-dimensional printing. Adequate selection and tailoring of the manufacturing methodology are imperative for overcoming characteristic application problems of these materials and achieving eco-efficiency and superior engineering properties. With distinctive benefits including rapid solidification, lower cost, saving natural resources, less energy consumption, and reduced carbon footprint, alkali-activated and geopolymer composites have emerged as a strong contender for replacing conventional concrete in diverse construction applications. Critical analysis of the literature on innovative production methods indicates that the one-part production technique is promising for the eliminating design complexity of these mixtures. The pre-setting pressure and hot pressing applications would allow the achievement of superior physical and mechanical characteristics in a short period of time, especially for the precast industry. The workability and setting problems of alkali-activated materials could be overcome using the two-stage concreting methodology. To be used in 3D printing of alkali-activated and geopolymer materials, remarkable development is required in terms of rheological aspects. Accordingly, this paper surveys pertinent and recent literature and critically reviews the state-of-the-art of alternative production techniques of alkali-activated and geopolymeric materials, along with its use in recent applications, identifies pertinent knowledge gaps, and defines future research directions.

Forecasting outbreak of COVID-19 in Turkey; Comparison of Box–Jenkins, Brown's exponential smoothing and long short-term memory models

    Guleryuz, Didem

The new coronavirus disease (COVID-19), which first appeared in China in December 2019, has pervaded throughout the world. Because the epidemic started later in Turkey than other European countries, it has the least number of deaths according to the current data. Outbreak management in COVID-19 is of great importance for public safety and public health. For this reason, prediction models can decide the precautionary warning to control the spread of the disease. Therefore, this study aims to develop a forecasting model, considering statistical data for Turkey. Box-Jenkins Methods (ARIMA), Brown's Exponential Smoothing model and RNN-LSTM are employed. ARIMA was selected with the lowest AIC values (12.0342, -2.51411, 12.0253, 3.67729, -4.24405, and 3.66077) as the best fit for the number of total case, the growth rate of total cases, the number of new cases, the number of total death, the growth rate of total deaths and the number of new deaths, respectively. The forecast values of the number of each indicator are stable over time. In the near future, it will not show an increasing trend in the number of cases for Turkey. In addition, the pandemic will become a steady state and an increase in mortality rates will not be expected between 17–31 May. ARIMA models can be used in fresh outbreak situations to ensure health and safety. It is vital to make quick and accurate decisions on the precautions for epidemic preparedness and management, so corrective and preventive actions can be updated considering obtained values.

Associations between prl/rsai polymorphism and some performance traits in holstein cattle reared under organic condition

    Ozdemir, M.; Sonmez, Z.; Aksakal, V.

The aim of this study was to ascertain the RsaI polymorphism of the Prolactin (PRL) gene of 186 organically reared Holstein cattle by PCR-RFLP method, in order to reveal the genetic variation of the population, and to reveal the relationship between PRL/RsaI genotypes and some milk yield traits. In the study, the RsaI-/- genotype frequency, RsaI+/+ genotype frequency and RsaI-/+ genotype frequency of Holstein cattle were determined as 0.26, 0.22 and 0.52, respectively. The RsaI- gene frequency was 0.52, and the RsaI+ gene frequency was 0.48. Hardy-Weinberg genetic equilibrium test showed that the distribution of genotype frequencies was determined to be in genetic equilibrium. The relationships between PRL/RsaI polymorphism and the examined milk yield traits were not significant. As a result, an economic and safe method PCR-RFLP for the detection of genetic markers, was successfully used in the determination of the 3 genotypes (RsaI-/-, RsaI-/+, and RsaI+/+) of Prolactin gene in Holstein cattle reared under organic condition, and the results was similar with previously reported literature.

A green nano-biosynthesis of selenium nanoparticles with Tarragon extract: Structural, thermal, and antimicrobial characterization

Yilmaz, Mustafa Tahsin; İspirli, Humeyra; Taylan, Osman; Dertli, Enes

In this study, tarragon extract was used as a reducing agent to perform green nano-biosynthesis of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs). The synthesized SeNPs were characterized using measurements of UV–Vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy disperse analysis of X rays (EDAX), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and differential scanning analysis (DSC). Synthesis of nanoparticles was confirmed by observing a peak at 212 nm in UV-VIS, indicating the surface plasmon resonance of SeNPs. Tarragon extract enabled a stable dispersion of SeNPs, giving rise to formation of the nanoparticles in the shape of quasi-spheres without clustering with the sizes between 20 and 50 nm. The SeNPs were shown to be in the form of nanocrystals, having Se embedded in the nanostructure with high thermal stability (a high resistance to thermal process over 200 °C). The SeNPs synthesized with tarragon extract could remarkably increase the inhibition zones from approximately 13 to 18 mm against the pathogenic bacteria and from 10 to 14 mm, 17–36 mm, 8–12 mm, 15–24.5 mm and 9–14 mm, against A. alternata, A. niger, A. parasiticus, B. cinerea, F. oxysporum and P. chrysogenum, respectively.

Land Use Impact of Maritime Pine and Eucalypt: A Life Cycle Assessment Study

Ferreira, José; Esteves, Bruno; Ayata, Ümit; Cruz-Lopes, Luisa; Domingos, Idalina

The forestry sector in Portugal faces important challenges, resulting in an increased incidence of fires and the action of pathogens, which puts the sustainability of forest resources at risk. Due to the economic, social, and environmental importance of forests, this work assessed the land use environmental impact of maritime pine and eucalypt standing in Portuguese forests. SimaPro software was used to translate the inventory table results into land use impact category. The ILCD 2011 Midpoint+ method was chosen to assess the “land use” environmental impact that focuses on soil quality and its indicator (kg carbon deficit), which describes the changes in soil organic matter associated with land interventions. The results showed that for the first rotation time, the land use impact category per cubic meter of maritime pine is 18423 kg C deficit and 23430 kg C deficit for eucalypt, which means that the land use impact category of eucalypt is 27% higher than the impact of maritime pine.

An application of finite element method in material selection for dental implant crowns

Sensoy, Abdullah T.; Çolak, Murat; Kaymaz, Irfan; Findik, Fehim

Materials used for dental crowns show a wide range of variety, and a dentist's choice can depend on several factors such as patient desires, esthetics, tooth factors, etc. One of the most important issues for implant surgery is the primary stability and it should be provided to minimize the risks of screw loosening, failed osseointegration, or nonunion. The current study aims to present the Finite Element Analysis (FEA)-based material selection strategy for a dental crown in terms of reducing the aforementioned risks of dental implants. A virtual surgery mandible model obtained using MIMICS software was transferred to the ANSYS and material candidates determined using CES software were compared using FEA. The results indicated that Zr02+Y2O3 (zirconia) has shown a 12.79% worse performance compared to Au83-88/Pt4-12/Pd4.5-6 alloy in terms of abutment loosening. On the other hand, zirconia is the most promising material for dental crowns in terms of the stability of the bone-implant complex. Therefore, it may show the best overall performance for clinical use. Moreover, as suggested in this study, a better outcome and more accurate predictions can be achieved using a patient-specific FEA approach for the material selection process.

Kaymak, Nuriye; Oz Orhan, Elif; Bayram, Ozkan; Bilge Ocak, Sema

Graphene nanosheets (Gns) obtained by the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method have been employed for the fabrication of Graphene/Al2O3/p-type silicon (Si) structure. The Raman, scanning-electron-microscopy (SEM) and transmission-electron-microscopy (TEM) have been used to analyze the morphology and structural features of the graphene nanosheet. The dielectric features and electrical-conductivity of Graphene/Al2O3/p-type Si have been studied in the frequency range 10 kHz–400 kHz and in the voltage range, −4 V to +4 V at 300 K. The obtained experimental outcomes imply that electrical conductivity and dielectric features of Graphene/Al2O3/p-type Si were found out to be powerful functions of frequency and applied bias voltage. It can be seen that almost all of the interface states between metal and silicon contribute to modify of dielectric features of Graphene/Al2O3/p-type Si structure.

Aggressive environment performance of low energy cements containing fly ash

    Gokce, H. Suleyman; Simsek, Osman

In this study, compressive strength performance of boron active belite cement containing fly ash at the ratios of 0, 10, 20, and 30% (by weight of cement) is researched against aggressive environments; sea water, 5% sodium sulphate solution, and 5% ammonium nitrate solution in addition to tapping water. Alternative low energy cement i.e., Portland-composite cement was used and its results were compared with those of boron active belite cement. Early strength losses (reaching up to 40%) of the boron active belite cement with incorporation of fly ash up to 30% were found to be less pronounced than those (reaching up to 51%) of Portland-composite cement in tapping water. Although, the losses were highly compensated with the prolonged curing period (90 days), boron active belite cement and Portland-composite cement kept their losses up to 14% and 36%, respectively. Residual mechanical properties (reaching up to 67%) of boron active belite cement against aggressive environments were found almost similar to those of Portland-composite cement in presence of 30% fly ash. In conclusion, the study shows that belite cements with low fly ash contents can be a reasonable alternative for specific applications such as mass concrete, hot weather concreting especially in aggressive environments.

High-pressure homogenisation of sheep milk ice cream mix: Physicochemical and microbiological characterisation

    Sert, Durmuş; Mercan, Emin

The effect of high-pressure homogenisation (HPH) treatment (0, 25, 50, 75, or 100 MPa) of mix on the physicochemical, textural, and microbiological characteristics of sheep milk ice cream was determined. Textural properties of the mix were not affected by HPH. However, HPH increased L*, a*, and b* values of the mix. In HPH-treated mix samples, the mean particle diameter was lower compared with the control. The hardness value of ice cream changed from 43.0 to 58.1 N, and HPH increased it depending on the increasing pressure. The highest overrun (58.3%) was determined in control, whereas the lowest overrun (35.8) was found in HPH-100. Melting time and first dripping time were increased depending on the increasing pressure of HPH, while HPH decreased the melting rate. HPH treatment of mix significantly reduced the microbial loads of ice cream samples. Consequently, HPH treatment can enhance the hardness, melting, and microbiological properties of ice cream from sheep milk.
