Effects of Recycled Asphalt Material and Natural Pozzolan as Additives of Hot-Mix Asphalt: A Field Study

    Yilmaz, Bahadır; Şentürk, Mehmet Akif

Using existing resources more efficiently and effectively becomes important currently. The question of how to make the best use of resources arises in the choice between constructing new roads and improving deteriorated existing roads. It is also important to reduce the amount of consumption and cost of materials. This has emerged the need to use waste materials by recycling and reusing. In this study, a new hot-mix asphalt (HMA) mixture was developed using recycled asphalt pavement (RAP), which was obtained by excavating the surface of a road at the end of its service life, together with a waste material namely natural pozzolan (NP). The final obtained mixture was used as a wear layer on an active highway. Core specimens were extracted from the paved layer for one year and subjected to dynamic and mechanical laboratory tests. Adding NP improved the resistance of the HMA mixture under heavy seasonal effects and traffic loads. In addition, NP increased the tensile strength, making the HMA mixture more resistant to deformation than control and RAP HMA mixtures. Dynamic creep test results showed that the control asphalt mixture had the most deformation and that the RAP mixture with NP had the least. According to the laboratory results, NP addition increased the stability value of the control mixture by 40%. Especially in cold seasons, the role of NP was more evident. In the performance tests that were applied on core samples taken from the field, ITS values for September increased by 98%, and the deformation values obtained as a result of the dynamic creep test decreased by 12%. In summary, adding NP to RAP HMA improves the performance of the pavement and the cost-effectiveness of the environmentally friendly use of RAP in HMA.

This study aims to identify a cyanidin-3-rutinoside chloride that exhibits both photovoltaic performance and nonlinear optical properties, which may be utilized in the field of optoelectronics. Prior to investigating these properties, the stable structure must be determined. For this purpose, its conformational analysis is performed by the Molecular Force Field method with the spartan program. The exact nature of the stable configuration has been ascertained by empirical evidence. The energy of the stable configuration is -1654184.76 kcal/mol, and its dipole moment is 9.94 Debye. Cyanidin-3-rutinoside chloride has been investigated using experimental FT-IR and Raman spectroscopies. Meanwhile, the DFT method at the B3LYP/6-311 + + G(d, p) level was employed in order to study the simulated FT-IR and Raman spectra, the HOMO-LUMO analysis, the molecular electrostatic potentials (MEP), and the non-linear optical (NLO) characteristics of the title molecule. The HOMO and LUMO energies are − 6.45 and − 3.64 electron volts (eV), respectively, with a gap value of 2.81 eV. Additionally, the title compound’s open-circuit voltage, the transition density matrix light-harvesting efficiency, driving force, and binding energy were calculated with by taking photovoltaic cell properties into account. Furthermore, investigations of hole reorganization energy, electron reorganization energy, and total reorganization energy were carried out at the B3LYP/6-31G(d, p) level for the cyanidin-3-rutinoside chloride of interest. In addition, density of state calculations and NBO were made at the B3LYP/6-31G(d, p) level. We calculated the following values for LHE,,,,, and : 0.06, 2.45 eV, 0.20 eV, 0.56 eV, 0.50 eV, 0.57 eV and 1.06 eV, respectively.

Reflective Polarization Conversion with Multi-Functional, Ultrathin Metasurface for Ku-and K-Band Applications

    Teber, Ahmet

Reflective polarization conversions with a simplistic design of an ultrathin, single-layered, and multi-functional anisotropic metasurface as a polarization converter is utilized for Ku-and K-band applications. The designs with two substrate thicknesses (0.095λ0 and 0.069λ0, respectively) are capable of a cross-polarization converter (CPC) and a linear-to-circular (LTC) polarization conversion. The design with 0.095λ0 thickness achieves a CPC between 17.96 and 26.90GHz with the efficiency of more than 90% and a relative bandwidth of 40% under normal incidence. It maintains angular stability by altering the oblique incidence angles up to 300 with greater than 80% of the PCR in the K-band. Meanwhile, an LTC in two frequency bands, 10.30-10.53GHz and 28.65-29.70GHz, is also numerically demonstrated. The second design with 0.069 λ0 thickness provides a CPC above the PCR value of 87% in the frequency range from 10.46-23.05GHz (covering the entire Ku-and part of the K-band) with angular stability of 40 above the PCR value of 80%. In the meantime, an LTC with relative bandwidth of 75% in the frequency range from 9.53-9.79&24.74-25.27GHz is numerically revealed. These polarization converters exhibit relatively good performances of facile structure and multi-functional properties, which can be useful in Ku-and K-band applications.

Saygın, Muhammet; Say, Serkan; Öztürk, İsmail Yavuz; Gülden, Bahadır; Kaplan, Kadir

This study explores the relationship between teachers’ entrepreneurial behaviors and their creativity-nurturing behaviors, with a particular emphasis on sustainability in education. While previous studies have typically examined entrepreneurship and creativity as separate concepts, often focusing on their individual dimensions, this study underscores the significance of integrating entrepreneurial and creative competencies to promote sustainable educational practices. By highlighting how teachers’ entrepreneurial and creative skills contribute to sustainable education, this study addresses the broader impact these competencies have on meeting the evolving needs and expectations of students, families, and society. This approach supports the development of a more resilient and adaptive education system that can thrive over time. The research involved 1396 classroom teachers from the Mersin province of Turkey. Analysis of the data revealed a strong positive correlation between teachers’ entrepreneurial behaviors and their creativity-nurturing behaviors, indicating that teachers who exhibit higher levels of entrepreneurial traits are more likely to engage in practices that foster creativity or that teachers who exhibit higher levels of creativity nurturing behaviors are more likely to engage in entrepreneurial practices among their students. Thus, the importance of the high-level relationship between entrepreneurial behaviors and creativity-enhancing behaviors in improving sustainability in education has been revealed. This study highlights the need to integrate entrepreneurial skills into teaching practices to support a sustainable educational framework.

Evaluating STC-1 and STC-2 mRNA expressions in Schizophrenia patients with increased oxidative stress; [Évaluation des expressions d'ARNm de STC-1 et STC-2 chez des patients schizophrènes présentant un stress oxydatif accru]

Karabulut Uzunçakmak, Sevgi; Özcan, Halil; Dirican, Ebubekir; Tavacı Özçelik, Ayşegül

Introduction: Schizophrenia is a chronic psychiatric disorder characterized by cognitive impairment. Oxidative stress is associated with disease progression in patients with schizophrenia. Stanniocalcin (STC)-1 and STC-2 are two proteins commonly expressed in mammals belonging to the stanniocalcin family and they are involved in oxidative stress. The aim of this study is to investigate STC-1 and STC-2 mRNA expressions in schizophrenia patients with altered oxidative stress parameters. Methods: For this purpose, 70 patients with schizophrenia and 40 healthy individuals were recruited for the study. Peripheral blood samples were obtained from all participants. Glutathione (GSH) activities, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities, and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were measured. STC-1 and STC-2 expressions were assessed by real-time polymerase chain reactions. Results: SOD activity levels were lower in patients than in healthy individuals (p = 0.0309), while the patients’ MDA levels were higher (p = 0.039). STC-1 and STC-2 expressions were lower in patients than in healthy individuals (p = 0.1049 and p < 0.0001, respectively). Furthermore, these two genes had a positive correlation among the patients (r = 0.435, p = 0.0025). According to area under the curve (AUC) values, STC-2 (AUC = 0.8332, p < 0.0001) had better diagnostic power than STC-1 (AUC = 0.6167, p = 0.1037). Conclusions: The expression of stanniocalcins in schizophrenia was investigated here for the first time. Decreased STC-2 expression in patients with schizophrenia with increased oxidative stress parameters may guide the understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms caused by oxidative stress, which may be increased in cognitive diseases such as schizophrenia, and it also has the potential to be a prognostic factor that can be used in the diagnosis of schizophrenia.

Occupational Safety and Hidden Risks in a Furniture Factory: A Comprehensive Assessment of Hazards Related to Noise, Lighting, Thermal Comfort, and Dust Exposure

    Özdemir, Mustafa; Albayrak, Sirer

This study assessed the occupational health and safety conditions in a furniture manufacturing facility, focusing on key environmental factors such as noise, lighting, thermal comfort, and dust exposure. Noise measurements recorded levels as high as 95.3 dB(A) during CNC machine operations, exceeding legal exposure limits of 87 dB(A), posing significant risks to workers’ hearing health. Lighting assessments showed levels ranging from 134 to 247 lux in production lines, which falls below the recommended threshold of 300 lux for adequate visibility. Thermal comfort was evaluated with temperature readings at 14.2 °C and relative humidity at 43%, revealing marginal comfort conditions that could reduce worker efficiency and satisfaction. Dust exposure measurements indicated respirable dust concentrations reaching 3.69 mg/m³ in the cutting department, which is close to the permissible exposure limit of 5 mg/m³, raising concerns about long-term respiratory health. These findings suggest several measures to improve workplace safety, including enhanced engineering controls, mandatory personal protective equipment (PPE), improved lighting systems, optimised thermal conditions, and advanced ventilation to reduce dust exposure. This comprehensive evaluation provides critical insights for improving furniture factories’ occupational health and safety practices.

Energy-driven TBM health status estimation with a hybrid deep learning approach

Li, Yongsheng; Zhang, Limao; Pan, Yue; Tapkın, Serkan; Song, Xieqing

This study provides a hybrid deep learning approach that enables the researchers to estimate the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) health status during excavation process using energy consumption data. By analyzing the energy forms and paths in the tunneling process, the key energy factors' consumption performance behavior affecting TBM safety is identified. The Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD) method and a Convolution neural network-Long short term memory-Depth Neural Network (CNN-LSTM-DNN, CLDNN) model are integrated for Health Performance Parameter (HPP) prediction. A classification method is constructed by the Generative Adversarial Imputation Networks (GAIN) model for health status estimation. The SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) method is performed to quantify the relationships between energy consumption and system health status. A tunneling case in Singapore is used to test the effectiveness of the developed methodology. It is found that (1) the proposed method provides TBM cutter wear and cooling oil prediction with a R-square (R2) of 0.8591 and 0.8727, respectively, and (2) classification results indicate that the estimation F1-score of 0.9863 can be achieved based on health status evaluation indicator (HSEI). The novelty of the proposed approach lies in its capabilities of (1) fully extracting and utilizing the energy consumption information in every regard to predict TBM health performance; (2) providing a good one-step-ahead health status estimation for the TBM excavation process. Therefore, this study proposes a feasible direction for the application of energy consumption data in TBM health status estimation.

Variations of natural frequencies of masonry minarets due to environmental effects

Yanik, Yusuf; Aymelek, Abdullah; Yildirim, Ömer; Demirtaş, Betül; Türker, Temel

It is very important to distinguish the reason of change in natural frequencies of structures either caused by a possible damage or environmental conditions (temperature and humidity). In this study, the changes in the dynamic properties of masonry and reinforced concrete minarets under environmental effects, such as temperature and humidity, were investigated. The masonry minarets of İskenderpaşa, Hacı Kasım, and Tavanlı Mosques and the reinforced concrete minarets of Karadeniz Technical University, Dilaveroğlu and Papatya Mosques in Trabzon were monitored by ambient vibration test method, and the relationship between natural frequencies and temperature and humidity was tried to be determined. For this purpose, the natural frequencies of these minarets were measured at certain intervals under different temperature and humidity conditions over a period of approximately 6 months. The vibration measurement system which was developed by our research team was used in the measurements. From the data collected by these measurements, the variation intervals of the natural frequencies (the smallest and the highest values), the percentages of change and their relations with temperature and humidity were revealed. This relationship was determined using linear–non-linear simple and multiple regression analyses. From this study, it was found that the natural frequencies change under environmental effects, such as temperature and humidity, and this rate of change was approximately 7%. There was moderate correlation in Tavanlı, Dilaveroğlu, and Papatya Minarets, and strong correlation in Hacı Kasım Minaret.

Unveiling the significance of Gremlin-1 as a novel biomarker for enhanced severity prediction in COVID-19 patients

Celik, Muhammet; Tekin, Erdal; Koçak, Mehmet Nuri; Uzunçakmak, Sevgi Karabulut; Bayraktar, Mustafa

Gremlin-1 is associated with lung disease and plays a role in the initiation and progression of pulmonary fibrosis. This suggests that Gremlin-1 may be associated with lung involvement in COVID-19 and poor clinical outcomes and warrants further investigation. This prospective, cross-sectional, single-blind study was the first to investigate Gremlin-1 levels in COVID-19 patients and whether Gremlin-1 levels could be used to predict and guide clinical follow-up in outpatients and inpatients. In this context, serum Gremlin-1 levels were measured and compared in 2 groups of patients who were diagnosed as positive for COVID-19 by RT-PCR and were followed up as outpatients (n = 28) or required hospitalization (n = 30). The median Gremlin-1 values were statistically significantly different between outpatients and intensive care unit patients (0.367 ng/mL [IQR = 0.377], 1.858 ng/mL [IQR = 2.245], respectively) (P < .0001). The area under the ROC curve value to determine the discriminative power of Gremlin-1 was found to be 0.772 (95% CI: 0.672-0.871; P < .0001), and the cutoff value of Gremlin-1 to discriminate between outpatients and hospitalized patients was found to be 1.242 ng/mL with 66.7% sensitivity and 67.2% specificity. Serum Gremlin-1 level is an important biomarker that can be used as a clinical decision-making tool for COVID-19 positive patients.

Thermal and energy analysis of a novel solar updraft tower design with divergent chimney and convergent collector concept: CFD analysis with experimental validation

Cuce, Pinar Mert; Saxena, Abhishek; Cuce, Erdem; Kontoleon, Karolos J.; Oztekin, Erman K.; Shaik, Saboor; Guo, Shaopeng

The fact that energy sources are heavily dependent on fossil fuels increases the need for alternative energy day by day. Solar energy is the most popular alternative energy source with massive potential. Solar chimney power plants (SCPP) are one of the systems of interest based on solar energy. SCPP systems are rare systems that can provide 24-hour power output. Their performance has been the subject of constant research since the first pilot plant in Manzanares. Design is crucial for performance figures of SCPPs, and the limitation of climatic parameters causes the system to be approached with different designs. This study makes a 3D CFD model by combining the divergent chimney and convergent collector structure based on the first pilot plant. The solar ray tracing algorithm and the RNG k-e turbulence model are applied and the model equations are solved under dynamic conditions with the reliable software ANSYS FLUENT. After the mesh-independent solution of the model is complete, it is validated with experimental data. The two cases are compared for solar radiation of 1000 W/m2 and environmental temperature of 293 K. A power output of 50.51 kW is achieved for standard pilot sizing. With the new model, the power output rises to 146.34 kW. It is seen that the divergent chimney and convergent collector affect the airflow in the system, increasing the maximum air velocity to 19.363 m/s. In parallel with the experimental data, it is seen that the temperature on the ground exceeds 360 K in the CFD results.

Kaya, Alican; Ceylan, Aslı F.; Kavutcu, Mustafa; Santamaria, Abel; Šoltésová Prnová, Marta; Stefek, Milan; Karasu, Çimen

Inhibiting aldose reductase (ALR2, AR) as well as maintaining a concomitant antioxidant (AO) activity via dual-acting agents may be a rational approach to prevent cellular glucotoxicity and at least delay the progression of diabetes mellitus (DM). This study was aimed at evaluating the dual-acting AR inhibitor (ARI) cemtirestat (CMTI) on tissue oxidative stress (OS) and carbonyl stress (CS) biomarkers in rats exposed to fructose alone (F) or fructose plus streptozotocin (D; type-2 diabetic). D and F rats were either untreated or treated daily with low- or high-dose CMTI, ARI drug epalrestat (EPA) or antioxidant stobadine (STB) for 14 weeks. Malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione S-transferase (GST), nitric oxide synthase (NOS), and catalase (CAT) were increased in the sciatic nerve of F and D. These increases were attenuated by low doses of CMTI and STB in D, but exacerbated by low-dose EPA and high-dose CMTI in F. STB and CMTI and to a lesser extent EPA improved MDA, protein-carbonyl, GST and CAT in the hearts and lungs of F and D. CMTI and STB were more effective than EPA in improving the increased MDA and protein-carbonyl levels in the kidneys of F and especially D. CMTI ameliorated renal GST inhibition in D. In the lungs, hearts, and kidneys of F and D, the GSH to GSSG ratio decreased and caspase-3 activity increased, but partially resolved with treatments. In conclusion, CMTI with ARI/AO activity may be advantageous in overcoming OS, CS, and their undesirable consequences, with low dose efficacy and limited toxicity, compared to ARI or antioxidant alone.

The aroma profile of butter produceusing different starter cultures; [Aromatski profil maslaca proizvedenih korištenjem različitih starter kultura]

Şengül, Mustafa; Akgül, Halil İbrahim; Ürkek, Bayram

The aroma of fermented dairy products is greatly influenced by starter cultures and by the lactic acid bacteria strains that are used as starter cultures. Experimental butter samples were produced using no starter culture, by a commercial starter culture (Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis, Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris, Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis biovar. diacetylactis, Leuconostoc mesenteroides), by a prepared bacteria mix (Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis EM1, Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris EM28, Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis biovar. diacetylactis G49, Leuconostoc mesenteroides B3), and by a prepared bacteria mix fortified with Lactobacillus rhamnosus B19 (L. rhamnosus B19). The aroma profile of the butter samples was investigated using a gas chromatography mass spectometry method (GC-MS). A total of 92 components were determined in the butter samples, including acids (12), alcohols (20), aldehydes (9), alkanes (6), esters (8), ketones (19) and several other aroma compounds (18). The sample containing the prepared starter culture had the most detectable aroma components, while the lowest number of aromatic components were found in the sample without a starter culture. 2,3-butanedione (diacetyl) was not detected in the sample without a starter culture. 2-Butanone 3-hydroxy-(acetoin) content was the highest in the sample containing the commercial starter culture and the lowest in the sample without a starter culture.

Determinants of Ecological Footprint: A Quantile Regression Approach

    Özcan, Kübra Akyol

Through the examination of the ecological consequences of human actions, policymakers are able to distinguish certain areas in which resource use can be increased and the generation of waste diminished. This study examines the effects of foreign direct investment, gross domestic product, industrialization, renewable energy consumption, and urban population on the ecological footprints in 131 countries between 1997 and 2020. The objective of this study is to establish a thorough understanding of the relationship between these variables and ecological footprints while considering temporal changes from economic and environmental aspects. The analysis of a substantial dataset encompassing many countries aims to uncover recurring patterns and trends that can provide valuable information for the formulation of policies and strategies pertaining to sustainable development on a global level. The study fills a significant gap in the knowledge on the ecological impact of different variables, providing a nuanced understanding of the interdependencies among these factors, thus guiding sustainable development strategies, and promoting global sustainability. The study utilizes quantile regression analysis, a nonparametric estimator, to estimate consistent coefficients. The statistical analysis reveals that FDI, urbanization, and GDP have statistically significant and positive effects on ecological footprints. Industrialization and renewable energy consumption show significant and negative relationships with ecological footprints. The findings of this study contribute to the understanding of the relationships among these variables and provide insight to inform policy and decision-making efforts focused on reducing ecological consequences and advancing sustainable development goals.
