Cuce, Pinar Mert; Guclu, Tamer; Cuce, Erdem
Concentrating solar power systems (CSP) is a very efficient technology for clean and renewable energy production. It basically works on the principle of focusing the sun's rays with the help of a reflective surface. There are two types of CSP systems: point-focused and line-focused. Point-focused ones are parabolic dish collectors and solar towers. Line-focused ones are parabolic trough collectors (PTCs) and linear Fresnel reflectors. It is possible to reach focus temperatures over 1000 °C with point-focused CSPs. Line-focused CSP systems are used to obtain thermal and electrical energy at temperatures below 500 °C. Among CSP technologies, PTCs are widely preferred. While it can be used alone, it can also be used in combination with other power generation systems by creating hybrid systems. In this regard, hybrid PTC/TEG energy systems created with thermoelectric generators (TEGs) come to the fore. These systems have higher electrical and thermal efficiency values compared to traditional PTCs. In this study, CSP systems, PTCs, TEGs and hybrid solar energy systems-based PTCs were examined in detail. It is concluded from the study that the total thermal efficiency of PTC-TEG hybrid systems can be enhanced by up to %70 with respect to PTC systems.

Memis, Habibe; Bekar, Fevzi; Guler, Cagri; Kamiloğlu, Aybike; Kutlu, Naciye
The aim of this study was to optimize drying conditions during ultrasonic-assisted osmotic dehydration and subsequent microwave drying of red beetroot using the Box-Behnken design. For this purpose, ultrasonic-assisted osmotic dehydration was performed at different ultrasonic powers (50, 75, and 100 W), sonication times (20, 40, and 60 min), and salt concentrations (0%, 15%, and 30%). The subsequent drying procedures were conducted with 231, 518, and 805 W microwave power. The best condition was selected as 5.15% salt concentration, 20 min sonication time, 50 W ultrasonic power, and 716.45 W microwave power. The responses obtained under optimum conditions were determined as 68.06%, 9.54 mg GAE/g dm, 28.23, 42.66, and 3.08 for DPPH• % inhibition, total phenolic content, L*, a*, and b* values, respectively. While favorable impacts on color were detected for the applied pretreatments, the DPPH• scavenging activities of the dried beetroot were determined to be more significant after ultrasonic-assisted osmotic dehydration. Furthermore, the drying kinetics of beetroot were evaluated according to the Midilli et al. model. When the fit to the model was investigated, it was compatible at R2> 0.90 level. As a result, the ultrasonic-assisted osmotic dehydration pretreatment performed before the microwave drying method preserved the quality characteristics of beetroot samples and was successfully applied.

Ayazoglu, Rabil; Kadakal, Mahir; Akkoyunlu, Ebubekir
We consider the parabolic-elliptic chemotaxis system with the exponents depending on the spatial variables logistic source and nonlinear signal production: ut = ∆u−χ∇·(u∇υ)+f(x, u), (x, t) ∈ Ω×(0, T), 0 = ∆υ−υ+uγ in a bounded domain Ω ⊂ RN (N ≥ 1) with smooth boundary, subject to nonnegative initial data and homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions, where χ > 0, γ ≥ 1 and ∂ν∂ denotes the outward normal derivative on ∂Ω. The logistic function f fulfilling f(x, s) ≤ ηs− µsα(x)+1, η ≥ 0, µ > 0 for all s > 0 with f(x, 0) ≥ 0 ∀x ∈ Ω, where α : Ω → [1, ∞) is a measurable function. It is proved that if 1 ≤ α(x) < ∞ for all x ∈ Ω such that essinfx∈Ω α(x) > γ or essinfx∈Ω α(x) = γ with µ > χ, then there exists a nonnegative classical solution (u, υ) that is global-in-time and bounded. In addition, under the particular conditions γ = 1 and f(x, s) = µ(s − sα(x)+1), if µ is sufficiently large, the global bounded solution (u, υ) satisfies ∥u(·, t) − 1∥L∞(Ω) + ∥υ (·, t) − 1∥L∞(Ω) ≤ Ce− Nk+2 t for all t > 0 with k = min n χ42 12o , C > 0. The global-in-time existence and uniform-in-time boundedness of solutions are established under specific parameter conditions, which improves the known results.

Yılmaz, Metin; Cimşit, Canan; Keven, Arzu; Karaali, Rabi
The refrigerants used in traditional vapor compression refrigeration systems are harmful to the ozone layer and contribute to global warming. The demand for refrigeration is increasing because of global warming. In this study, for the first time, an energy, exergy, environmental, and enviroeconomic (4E) analysis was performed using different refrigerants and nanoparticles to reduce the energy required in low-temperature vapor compression cascade refrigeration systems and to determine more environmentally friendly nanorefrigerants. The R290 refrigerant was used for the Low-Temperature Circuit (LTC), while the High-Temperature Circuit (HTC) used RE170, R1234yf, R600, R600a, and R450A refrigerants. The nanoparticles used in the analysis were Al2O3, CNT, CuO, TiO2, ZnO, and SiO2. The R600 nanorefrigerant performed the best, whereas the R1234yf nanorefrigerant performed the worst. The results indicate that the CuO nanoparticles provided the highest performance. In addition, the results showed that the R290+R600-CuO nanorefrigerant emitted 11 % less CO2 than the pure R290+R600 refrigerant. The nanorefrigerants provide a more environmentally sustainable option because of their high efficiency and lower energy consumption than conventional refrigerants.

This randomized-controlled trial aimed to investigate the effect of bed exercises on postoperative anxiety, pain, early ambulation and mobilization. This study was conducted with a randomized-controlled trial design and in the general surgical clinic of a research and training hospital. A total of 120 patients (60 in the experimental group and 60 in the control group) scheduled for major abdominal surgery took part in the study. The data were collected using a patient information form, the Anxiety Specific to Surgery Questionnaire and the Visual Analog Scale through face-to-face interviews. The patients in the experimental group performed 15-min bed exercises on the day of their operation, as well as on the postoperative first and second days, and the control group underwent only the routinely performed procedures in the clinic. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, analysis of variance and t-tests. The sample of our study included major abdominal surgery patients. Ambulation was achieved at a mean time of 4 h earlier in the experimental group. On the postoperative first and second days, the patients in the experimental group had mean mobilization durations that were approximately 2 h longer compared with the patients in the control group. Moreover, the postoperative pain and anxiety levels of the patients in the experimental group were significantly lower than those of the patients in the control group (p < 0.05). We recommend that bed exercises be performed to lower anxiety and pain severity, achieve early ambulation and increase the duration of mobilization among patients following major abdominal surgery.

Majidian, Sina; Tapkın, Serkan; Tercan, Emre
Evaluation of tunnel performance in seismic-prone areas demands efficient means of estimating performance at different hazard levels. The present study introduces an innovative push-over analysis approach which employs the standard earthquake spectrum to simulate the performance of a tunnel. The numerical simulation has taken into account the lining and surrounding rock to calculate the rock-tunnel interaction subjected to a static push-over displacement regime. Elastic perfectly plastic models for the lining and hardening strain rock medium were used to portray the development of plastic hinges, nonlinear deformation, and performance of the tunnel structure. Separately using a computational algorithm, the non-linear response spectrum was approximated from the average shear strain of the rock model. A NATM tunnel in Turkey was chosen for parametric study. A seismic performance curve and two performance thresholds are introduced that are based on the proposed nonlinear seismic static loading approach and the formation of plastic hinges. The tunnel model was also subjected to a harmonic excitation with a smooth response spectrum and different amplitudes in the fully-dynamic phase to assess the accuracy of the approach. The parametric study investigated the effects of the lining stiffness and capacity and soil stiffness on the seismic performance of the tunnel.

Özdemir, Akın; Uçurum, Metin; Serencam, Hüseyin
Statistical process control (SPC) is widely used to monitor production processes in many industries under certain conditions. When dealing with a quality characteristic for uncertainty, fuzzy numbers are used in the context of the statistical process control (SPC) to monitor a fuzzy production process. The aim of this paper is fourfold. One, a fuzzy X¯-R control chart with an α-level cut is used based on trapezoidal fuzzy numbers (TFNs) for detecting the large shifts in the fuzzy process mean. Second, a fuzzy cumulative sum (FCUSUM) control with an α-level cut based on TFNs is firstly developed for detecting the small shifts in the fuzzy process mean. Third, the fuzzy process capability indices (FPCIs) are presented to measure the fuzzy process performance. Finally, an ultra-fine calcite production process is controlled with both the fuzzy X¯-R control chart and the proposed FCUSUM control chart. The results of the fuzzy X¯-R control charts show that the fuzzy production process is in control, and large shifts in the fuzzy process mean were detected. On the other hand, the results of the FCUSUM charts show that the fuzzy production process is out of control, and small shifts in the fuzzy process mean were detected. FPCIs are also conducted, and the results of fuzzy Cpk indices show that the ultra-fine calcite production process is not capable of meeting specification limits.

In this investigation, we undertook a comprehensive quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) analysis using both modern artificial neural network (ANN) methods and classical multiple linear regression methods (MLR). Our primary focus was on revealing the intricate connection between antidiabetic activity and the molecular structure of thirty-nine imidazolidine-2,4-dione derivatives. The B3LYP hybrid functional and 6-31G (d) basis set computed electronic properties at the quantum level. Rigorous benchmarking against experimental data validated the reliability of our quantum theory approach. Our statistical model effectively predicted activities closely aligned with experimental antidiabetic activities, quantified by the IC50 values. They also revealed a significant superiority of the ANN architecture (6-4-1) over the MLR method. This study stands as a meaningful contribution to the field, providing valuable insights for designing new antidiabetic drugs, particularly as potential inhibitors of tyrosine phosphate 1B (PTP1B). The explicit articulation of our primary aim and emphasis on the study’s significance underscore its potential impact on advancing drug development within the realm of antidiabetic therapeutics.

In this study, the two-dimensional crack problem was investigated by using the finite element method (FEM)based ANSYS package program and the artificial neural network (ANN)-based multilayer perceptron (MLP) method. For this purpose, a half-infinite functionally graded (FG) layer with a crack pressed through two rigid blocks was analyzed using FEM and ANN. Mass forces and friction were neglected in the solution. To control the validity of the crack problem model exercised, the acquired results were compared with a study in the literature. In addition, FEM and ANN results were checked using Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and coefficient of determination (R2), and a well agreement was found. Numerical solutions were made considering different geometric parameters and material properties. The stress intensity factor (SIF) was examined for these values, and the results were presented. Consequently, it is concluded that the considered non-dimensional quantities have a noteworthy influence on the SIF. Also FEM and ANN can be logical alternative methods to time-consuming analytical solutions if used correctly.

Optically active alcohols are crucial precursors. 1,2-Diarylethanols and their analogues constitute a significant group of substances of biological significance. The biocatalytic synthesis of (R)-1,2-diphenylethanol ((R)-2), which can be utilized as a precursor to important drugs, is still not at the desired level in terms of substrate amount and production process. This study asymmetrically reduced 1,2-diphenylethanone (1) using the Lactobacillus paracasei BD87E6 biocatalyst and a novel orthogonal quadratic design-embedded optimization approach. The following reaction optimization conditions were determined using the suggested optimization technique: pH = 6, temperature = 31 °C, incubation period = 48 h, and agitation speed=134 rpm. In addition, the reaction conversion was estimated to be 99.38 %, and the product's enantiomeric excess (ee) was estimated to be 99.12 %. Further, (R)-2 was produced with >99 % ee, >99 % conversion, and 98 % yield in the experimental investigation under the established optimum conditions. This study is the first attempt to reduce substrate 1 to (R) or (S)-2 using a mathematical optimization method in the presence of a biocatalyst. Furthermore, on a high-gram scale, 1 (15.70 g) was entirely transformed into (R)-2 (15.54 g, 98 % isolated yield). Notably, this study is also the first to perform the gram-scale production of (R)-2 using a novel optimization approach and a biocatalyst. Finally, the innovative and novel orthogonal quadratic design-embedded optimization technique has been demonstrated as an efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly biocatalytic procedure for synthesizing (R)-2.

This study aims to assess the Eastern Black Sea Basin drought conditions. For this purpose, the trend changes in SPI values of 6, 9, 12, and 24 months using innovative trend analysis were examined. Additionally, four machine learning models, including Multiple Linear Regression, Artificial Neural Networks, K Nearest Neighbors, and XGBoost Regressor, are employed to forecast SPI with rainfall data between 1965 and 2020 from eight rainfall stations. The input data for each model was SPI values from lead times of 1 to 6, resulting into 768 unique scenarios. The ML models estimated SPI values better as the SPI duration increased, with the 24-month SPI showing the highest accuracy. The results of SPI forecast indicated that the optimal model and number of input variables varied for each SPI and station, indicating that further studies are required to improve SPI predictions.

Ayata, Ümit; Peker, Hüseyin
In this study, solvent-based yacht varnish, stone varnish, and waxy varnish were applied in two coats using a brush, following industrial application standards, to the surfaces of the following tree species: black alder (Alnus glutinosa L. Gaertn.), curupay (Anadenanthera macrocarpa Benth.), iatandza (Albizia ferruginea), lemon (Citrus limon (L.) Burm.), loquat (Eriobotrya japonica L.), magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora L.), plane (Platanus orientalis L.), sucupira (Bowdichia nitida Benth.), and hornbeam (Carpinus betulus L.). Subsequently, the color parameters (b*, C*, L*, a*, ho, ΔE*, ΔH*, Δb*, ΔC*, Δa*, and ΔL*) of the varnish layers were compared with those of the untreated surfaces. The results of analysis of variance revealed significant differences in all color parameters. Decreases in L* values and increases in a* values were observed for all wood types when treated with three different varnishes. Additionally, in plane, black alder, and hornbeam wood, application of all varnishes resulted in increases in b* and C* values, with decreases in ho values. In sucupira wood, however, decreases were observed in b*, C*, and ho values with the application of all three varnishes. It was observed that a single type of varnish yielded different results on different wood types. This finding was attributed to the different types of resins present in the varnish types used in the study, which resulted in varying outcomes.

Cinar, Mehmet; Can, Sümeyra; Baris, Özlem; Demirci, Çiğdem Elif
Diltiazem and Verapamil are two important drug molecules in a separate group of Calcium Channel Blockers. The purpose of this work is to determine and compare the structural and spectroscopic properties of these two molecules using a number of experimental techniques and quantum chemical calculations. Compounds were characterized spectroscopically using FT-IR, Raman, NMR (1H, 13C, and DEPT), and UV–vis methods. Furthermore, the Density Functional Theory (DFT) method, Becke's three-parameter hybrid functional (B3LYP), and the 6–311++G(d,p) basis set were used to determine the ground state geometric structures of molecules, and the spectroscopic properties of the obtained optimum structures were investigated computationally. The optimization studies performed under vacuum circumstances and for the isolated molecules were found to be very close to the experimental results. In fact, r.m.s. values were discovered for Diltiazem and Verapamil with bond lengths of 0.013 and 0.024, and bond angles of 1° and 2°, respectively. The vibration characteristics of the compounds were discovered using the collected FT-IR and Raman spectra, and significant vibrational modes were assigned. After scaling, it was revealed that the quantum chemical data was congruent with the experimental ones, and that the characteristic vibrational modes were appropriately predicted. DFT calculations effectively determine molecules' structures due to internal consistency, despite being slightly distant from experimental data. Theoretical values for carbon and hydrogen atoms are better in agreement with observed values when scaling with 0.92 and 0.90. From the UV–vis spectra, Diltiazem HCl absorbance peaks were found at 207 and 237 nm, whereas Verapamil HCl absorbance peaks were identified at 203, 229, and 278 nm. When the theoretical calculations and experimental findings were compared, the anticipated absorption peaks were found to have shifted nearer the visible area. Furthermore, Hirshfeld surfaces and Molecular Electrostatic Potential surfaces were obtained and analyzed in order to better understand the electronic characteristics. The TDOS and PDOS (total and partial density of state) spectra were also studied. Finally, using the HOMO and LUMO energy values, the critical chemical parameters were evaluated, and it was discovered that both molecules had positive electron affinity and electronegativity values, indicating that they will accept electrons when the electron-nucleus attraction exceeds the electron-electron repulsion.

One of the nanomaterial-based antimicrobials, CuS, has emerged as a potential active therapeutic agent to combat biofilm infections, showing superior antibacterial activity with both photothermal and photodynamic effects under NIR illumination. To investigate the influence of transition metals on the antibacterial activity of CuxS, the antibacterial properties of shape- and phase- controlled copper-based multinary sulfide (M: CuxS (M: Mn, Zn and Ni)) nanostructures prepared by hot injection method were investigated against Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative Escherichia coli under NIR light irradiation. It has been shown that CuxS-based nanomaterials suppress bacterial growth under NIR light irradiation and that, in addition to their antibacterial activity, they also exhibit a remarkable ability to form biofilms. The antibiofilm efficacy of the M:CuxS (M: Mn, Zn and Ni) nanocomposites was significantly higher than that of bare CuS, resulting in biofilm inhibition with rates of 52.53 %, 62.24 % and 74.48 % on E. coli for Mn:CuxS, Zn:CuxS and Ni:CuxS, respectively. In addition, the biofilm of S. aureus was more affected by treatment with M:CuxS (M: Mn, Zn and Ni) nanocomposites, with biofilm activity of 64.15 %, 68.42 % and 87.35 % for Mn:CuxS, Zn:CuxS and Ni:CuxS, respectively. Ni:CuxS showed the highest antibacterial activity, which is attributed to smaller crystal and particle size and energy band gap, resulting in a larger number of nanoparticles per unit volume, a larger surface area and a stronger tendency to electrostatically bind to bacterial cell membranes, a faster ability to penetrate channels and stronger absorption in the NIR range. This work points the way for a broad application of CuS-based biocompatible synergistic antibacterial nanocomposites and can also serve as a guide for antibacterial/antibiofilm approaches as an alternative to conventional antibiotic treatments.

However, mycotoxigenic fungi are also common in pollen, creating contamination from generated mycotoxins. With adequate monitoring, sampling, processing and storage of pollen the development of mycotoxins can be significantly prevented. Since pollen grain has strong membranes which can limit the bioavailability of some nutrients and phytochemicals, novel methods and pretreatments are required with special emphasis on microbiological pretreatment methodologies. Pollen Chemistry & Biotechnology summarizes current knowledge of the chemical composition of pollen, its importance as a functional food ingredient and its health promoting properties. As Introduction part a short elaborate about botanical characteristics and data, including morphology and anatomy of pollen and bee preferences, is given. Important factors such as the botanical and geographical origin, best practices for preservation of nutritional composition, bioactivity and safety of pollen are covered in full. The nutritional profile of pollen based on data for minerals, lipids and nutrients is presented. A detailed phytochemical profile of pollen based on data for phenolics, flavonoids, carotenoids, vitamins, bioactive compounds is also covered. Areas for the improvement of the bioavailability of different nutrients and bioactive compounds of pollen via applied pretreatments are presented, as are best practices for adequate pollen collection, procession and storage in order to obtain safe products. At the end, an overview about pollen bioactivity as reason to use it as source of pharmaceuticals is made.

Background: Considering the low rate of qualitative studies on athletes with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), aiming to access in-depth data, we thought that the utilization of the qualitative method would allow us to collect the appropriate and sufficient data to yield novel findings and achieve sound conclusions. The study’s aim was to investigate anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury experience processes in athletes who had undergone isolated ACLR, reveal the clinically related milestones, and highlight the necessary gaps. Methods: Semi-structured interview techniques, in-depth follow-up questions, and thematic analysis were used to explore the experiences of participants with isolated ACL injuries 1–3 years after surgical treatment. The study was conducted in the Orthopaedics and Traumatology outpatient clinic of the Adana City Training and Research Hospital and included 14 male athletes who had undergone isolated primary ACLR. The study group’s demographic and qualitative data were collected in the first week of September 2023. The member checking process was completed in the third following week. A thematic analysis checklist was used to ensure the reliability of the thematic analysis. The Consolidated Criteria for Reporting of Qualitative Research (COREQ) guidelines were followed. Results: The experiences of 14 patients (22.78 ± 3.76 years, all males) were summarized into four themes that emerged from the data analysis process: ‘The Distinctions in the Participants’ Experiences Regarding the Moment of Injury,’ ‘Gathering Information about the ACL Injury,’ ‘Factors That Facilitate The Treatment Process and Reinforce Positive Experiences,’ and ‘Desperate Plight: Main Points of Patients’ Negative Experiences.’ Based on the main themes, there were 14 subthemes. Conclusions: Our study revealed that varying perceptions of ACL injury presented by the participants, which were caused by all stakeholders, including themselves, the professional environment, family members, social network, and the healthcare staff, showed that the physical and psychological impacts of the injury were observed in different severity levels at each stage of the process. We believe that an extensive guide for athletes with ACL injuries that includes all components of well-being and displays the required details for the sports club/coach, family/companion, and physician.
