The impact of ozone treatment on whey concentrate on the flow behaviour, functional and microbiological characteristics of whey powder

    Sert, Durmuş; Mercan, Emin

The impact of ozone treatment (OT) for 0 (control) 30, 60, 90 and 120 min to whey concentrate (WC) on powder flow, physicochemical, functional, and microbiological characteristics of whey powders (WPs) was examined. OT decreased the cohesiveness of WC, whereas the firmness, consistency and index of viscosity were not affected. OT caused higher L∗ and b∗ values in WP and improved the solubility and foaming capacity, but decreased foaming stability and bulk density. OT increased the mean particle size of WP samples depending on the treatment time. Higher treatment time of OT resulted in a lower cohesion index. OT decreased caking ability of WP samples and increased flow stability. Compaction coefficient and cohesion index depending on increasing test speed, were generally reduced with higher OT. Overall, powder flow analyses revealed that OT of WC resulted in improved flow behaviour of WP. The microbial load of WP was reduced using OT.

Performance of fly ash-blended Portland cement concrete developed by using fine or coarse recycled concrete aggregate

    Şimşek, O.; Pourghadri Sefidehkhan, H.; Gökçe, H.S.

The recycling of concrete and industrial wastes in the production of new concrete structures has increased its share due to the growing environmental concerns of the world. In this study, the use of recycled concrete aggregate at various replacement amounts (0–100 %) was investigated to be fine or coarse aggregate sources instead of crushed natural aggregate to understand better its effects on the dimensional stability and durability aspects of fly ash-blended Portland cement concrete. In the presence of recycled concrete aggregate, fly ash was very important for eliminating possible mechanical losses of concrete at 90 days. The use of coarse recycled concrete aggregate resulted in better compressive strength values of concrete exposed to with and without wetting–drying and freezing-thawing cycles when compared to fine ones. While the free drying shrinkage of concrete increased at significant amounts (68 and 79 %) for fine and coarse recycled concrete aggregate, the restrained drying shrinkage crack widths were reduced up to by 13.5 %. In conclusion, it should be noted that the amount and size of recycled concrete aggregate need to be designed by considering the residual quality and dimensional stability of concrete, which exposes weathering actions in place.

Optimization of Ultrasound Extraction of Phenolic Compounds from Tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus L.) Using Box–Behnken Design

Kutlu, Naciye; Kamiloglu, Aybike; Elbir, Tugba

In this study, ultrasound extraction of bioactive compounds from tarragon was examined as a sustainable technology. Pure water, which is a green solvent, was used as solvent. Box–Behnken was used in the experimental design, and ultrasonic power, extraction time and solvent-to-sample ratio were determined to be independent variables. The physicochemical properties were determined by physical (color, pH, Brix) and chemical analyses (antioxidant activity, total flavonoid and total phenolic compound (TPC)) in the extracts obtained under different conditions. Optimum conditions were found to be 73.9% ultrasonic power, 43.2 min sonication time and 10 mL/g solvent-to-sample ratio. The composite desirability (R2) of optimum conditions was 99.3% after optimization. Since high efficiency was obtained in a short time with ultrasound extraction, it was found to be quite good in terms of energy savings. That is, the highest TPC was obtained with a sonication time of 45 min with this method, while similar TPC in the control group (maceration) was obtained in 24 h. In the optimum conditions, extraction with other green solvents (ethanol and deep eutectic solvent—DES) was carried out and bioactive compound yields were compared. For different solvents compared under optimum conditions, ethanol gave higher yields in terms of TPC, while higher yields were obtained in samples using water as solvent for some antioxidant activity values. The results obtained with DES were not as high as expected, and this resulted in the conclusion that a hydrogen bond donor is not suitable for obtaining bioactive compounds from tarragon.

    Methods of fabrication of bionanocomposites

Cuce, Pinar Mert; Cuce, Erdem; Guclu, Tamer

Petrochemical-based plastic packaging materials that cannot be biodegradable and remain intact in nature for many years and the continuous proliferation of these materials as waste has become an international problem. As a result of this problem, bionanocomposites produced from biodegradable materials represent a new class of nanosized materials with various uses, from various daily uses to food packaging applications. It consists of a biobased component and at least one-dimensional nanosized particles. It differs from nanocomposites with fundamental differences such as preparation methods, functions, biodegradability, biocompatibility, and obtaining methods. In the presented study, the production methods of bionanocomposites are explained with some examples obtained by these methods. Generally, there are four main production methods: in situ intercalative polymerization, solution intercalation, template synthesis, and melt intercalation. With these methods, bionanocomposites can be produced that are homogeneously dispersed and provide major enhancements in mechanical, thermal and water vapor barrier characteristics compared to base polymers. It is capital to use the appropriate method and to make the correct synthesis according to the base polymer used and the type of nanoparticle added, to obtain a homogeneous and nonagglomerated bionanocomposite synthesis.

Irdemez, Şahset; Özyay, Gizem; Ekmekyapar Torun, Fatma; Kul, Sinan; Bingül, Züleyha

In this study, removal of colour from wastewaters prepared synthetically using Bomaplex Blue CR-L was investigated using raw and activated pumpkin seed shells by adsorption in a batch system. The effects of stirring speed, adsorbent concentration, dye concentration, temperature and pH on colour removal were investigated, and adsorption capacities of raw and activated pumpkin seed shells were determined. In addition, adsorption kinetics, isotherm coefficients, activation energies and thermodynamic parameters were calculated. The optimal adsorption conditions were determined as pH = 2, stirring speed of 200 rpm, adsorbent concentration of 10 g L-1 and 30 °C. Under the optimal conditions, the maximum removal efficiency of Bomaplex Blue CR-L using raw pumpkin seed shells was 73.01 %. This value rose to 79.71 % after activation processing was applied. Experimental adsorption data show that the adsorption is more suited to the Langmuir adsorption model and works in accordance with the pseudo-first-order kinetics model. As a result of thermodynamic research, ΔH° and ΔS° were 31.515 kJ mol-1 and 109.952 kJ mol-1 K-1 for the raw adsorbent, respectively. For the activated adsorbent, ΔH° and ΔS° were 43.118 kJ mol-1 and 152.237 kJ mol-1 K-1, respectively. The activation energy of adsorption was calculated as 10.918 kJ mol-1 for the raw adsorbent and 9.882 kJ mol-1 for the activated adsorbent.

Şahset, İrdemez; Duygu, Yeşılyurt; Torun, Ekmekyapar; Fatma; Sinan, Kul; Züleyha, Bıngül

In this study, the removal of Mn2+ ions from waters by the adsorption method using ash obtained from a treatment plant sludge burning unit, which is treatment plant waste and mostly disposed of in a landfill, was investigated. By determining the most suitable conditions for adsorption, adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamic values were determined. In the experiments, 63.9% removal efficiency was achieved using 10 g/L adsorbent concentration for 10 mg/L Mn+2 under optimum conditions. As a result of the research, it was determined that the adsorption proceeds according to the pseudo-second-degree reaction and abides by the Langmuir isotherm. The thermodynamic constants of ΔH°=-4.866 kJ/mol and ΔS°= 21.44 J/mol were determined. As a result of this, the reaction was exothermic, spontaneous, and random, and adsorption was physical adsorption. As a result of the study, sewage sludge ash can be used in the treatment of water containing low concentrations of Mn2+.

Assessment of waste-to-energy potential of ELT management: An actual case study for Erzincan

Güngör, Osman; Tozlu, Alperen; Arslantürk, Cihat

End-of-life tires (ELTs) and their decomposition are becoming a major environmental issue in the local region as a result of economic and technological challenges. Despite this, ELT management is gaining popularity as an advanced function for treating tires to obtain char, oil, and gas products using pyrolysis. The main goal of this article is to integrate data from an actual recycling plant with the activities of pyrolysis products and their physical properties in the literature. This article presents energy potentials and basic applications of pyrolysis products as well as advances in the current situation in ELT management in the world. Accordingly, an existing ELT management in Erzincan, Turkey is explained in detail by considering the available energy recovery and material treatment activities. In this plant, which has an installed power capacity of 12 MW, approximately 25 tons of pyrolytic oil, 10.7 tons of pyrolytic gas, 24 tons of carbon black and, 10.4 tons of steel are produced daily. The calorific values of carbon black and pyrolytic oil for the products leaving the pyrolysis plant are close to the values in the literature, which is promising. In the plant, the overall thermal efficiency of the system and the engine is found to be 26.34% and 51.24%, respectively. On the other hand, to supply additional power to the plant utilizing exhaust gas discharged to the atmosphere, some thermodynamic models can be developed; additionally, more rational values can be obtained through thermoeconomic and optimization.

Thermoeconomic analysis of a low-temperature waste-energy assisted power and hydrogen plant at off-NG grid region

Tozlu, Alperen; Kayabasi, Erhan; Ozcan, Hasan

In this study, thermoeconomic analysis of a CO2 power cycle and PEM hydrogen system using ultra-low temperature waste heat from a milk production facility is conducted. In the transcritical CO2 cycle, low-temperature LNG evaporation is used for cooling the condenser to increase the temperature difference enabling low temperature waste heat use. In addition, a PEM electrolyzer produces hydrogen to reduce the LNG requirement at the plant. A CO2-water exchanger has been designed to recover the pasteurized water's excess heat and evaporate the CO2 using Simcenter-Flomaster software. The inlet mass flow rates and outlet temperatures of the heat exchanger were optimized by performing thermoecomic analysis, and the thermal and economic performance of the facility was examined. The power cycle has 14% higher efficiency when LNG is used as the heat sink compared to ambient temperature condensation with an electricity production cost range at 0.05–0.11 $/kWh, and the hydrogen generation cost is between $2.6–5.20 kg−1. It is found that the plant could only be economically feasible when less than 50% of the power produced is used for hydrogen generation. Consequently, the proposed system can co-generate power and on-demand hydrogen in off-NG grid regions with reasonable investment and product costs.

High-speed treatment of low strength domestic wastewater for irrigation water production in pilot-scale classical, moving bed and fixed bed hybrid MBRs

Tuluk, Banu; Yildiz, Ergun; Nuhoglu, Alper; Tataroglu, Numan Suadi; Gulluce, Ekrem; Cengiz, Ibrahim; Degermenci, Nejdet; Angin, Ilker

To evaluate the treatability of domestic wastewater under conditions of low hydraulic retention time and high organic loadings, 3 pilot-scale automatically controlled membrane bioreactors (MBRs) as classical (C-MBR), moving bed (MB-MBR), and fixed bed (FB-MBR) were established and operated for a total of 268 days. Established pilot plants were compared in terms of treatment performance, membrane fouling, irrigation water criteria, and power consumption values. Results obtained have shown that all three systems were able to achieve more than 93% removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) in an average hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 1 hour, and MB-MBR and FB-MBR were superior in terms of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) removals. It has been determined that MB-MBR and FB-MBR are also advantageous in terms of power consumption. Especially it has been found that FB-MBR can produce better quality irrigation water with 40% lower power consumption than C-MBR under the same conditions. It was concluded that biofilm-supported hybrid systems could be a practical application in the fight against increasing water scarcity and global warming, both in obtaining clean water with less power consumption and in protecting human and environmental health.

Recovery of Polyphenols Using Pressurized Hot Water Extraction (PHWE) from Black Rosehip Followed by Encapsulation for Increased Bioaccessibility and Antioxidant Activity

Kasapoğlu, Kadriye Nur; Demircan, Evren; Gültekin-Özgüven, Mine; Kruger, Johanita; Frank, Jan; Arslaner, Ayla; Özçelik, Beraat

In this work, pressurized hot water extraction (PHWE) of hydrophilic polyphenols from black rosehip fruit was maximized using response surface methodology for simultaneous optimization in terms of extraction yield, total antioxidant capacity, total (poly)phenols, catechin, total monomeric anthocyanins, and cyanidin-3-O-glucoside. Extraction parameters, including temperature (X1: 40–80 °C) and the solvent-to-solid ratio (X2: 10–40 mL/g), were investigated as independent variables. Experimentally obtained values were fitted to a second-order polynomial model, and optimal conditions were determined using multiple regression analysis and analysis of variance. The black rosehip extract (BRE) obtained at optimized PHWE conditions was further encapsulated in biopolymer-coated liposomes and spray dried to enhance its processing and digestive stability. After reconstitution, the fabricated particles had an average size of 247–380 nm and a zeta-potential of 15–45 mV. Moreover, encapsulation provided remarkable protection of the phenolics under in vitro gastrointestinal digestion conditions, resulting in up to a 5.6-fold more phenolics in the bioaccessible fraction, which also had 2.9–8.6-fold higher antioxidant activity compared to the nonencapsulated BRE. In conclusion, PHWE in combination with a biopolymer coating is a potent method for the production of stable and safe edible natural extracts for the delivery of (poly)phenolic compounds in food and dietary supplements.

Investigation of the effect of current density and PH on oil and grease removal from leather industry wastewaters by electrocoagulation method

Bi̇Ngül Reçber, Züleyha; Ekmekyapar Torun, Fatma; Kul, Sinan; İRdemez, Şahset

In this study, the effects of pH and current density on the removal of high concentrations of oil and grease in leather industry wastewater by the electrocoagulation method were investigated. Two different types of electrodes were used in the study. Studies with aluminum electrodes have shown that these electrodes are more effective than iron electrodes in removing oil and grease. In addition, aluminum electrodes are affected more by the system pH than iron electrodes. Studies have shown that higher oil and grease removal efficiencies are obtained below pH 4 for both electrodes. While the oil and grease removal efficiency with Al electrodes is 95% at pH 2, this value decreases to 83% at pH 6. In Fe electrodes, while the removal efficiency is 87.83% at pH 2, it decreases to 83% at pH 6. The effect of current density on oil and grease removal was examined and it was observed that the removal efficiency remained constant above a certain current density in aluminum electrodes. While the efficiency of Al electrodes is 83.31% at 0.6 mA cm-2 current density, this value has increased to about 98% at 1.2, 1.8, and 2.4 mA cm-2 current densities. In Fe electrodes, the oil and grease removal efficiency is 82.66% at 0.6 mA cm-2 current density, while it is 90% at 1.2 and 1.8 mA cm-2 current densities and 98% at 2.4 mA cm-2. These results show that the electrocoagulation process removes the oil and grease in wastewater at a high rate. This shows that this process can also be used as pre-treatment before the biological treatment of industrial wastewater with high oil and grease content.

In this study, it was aimed to determine the effects of industrial waste fly ash substitution on physical and mechanical properties of lightweight concrete. In this respect, lightweight concrete samples were produced by the use of fly ash as a cement replacement material in different proportions (1%, 3% and 5%). In lightweight concrete production, the Nevşehir region acidic pumice has been used as aggregate. The physical and mechanical properties of these lightweight concrete samples were investigated and microstructural analysis was carried out. To determine the physical differences, dry unit volume weight, capillary water absorption, porosity, compactness and freezethaw experiments were conducted. For the determination of mechanical properties, tensile splitting strength and compressive strength tests were applied. SEM images have been interpreted to examine the structural differences occurring within the material. As a result of the study, it was determined that the physical and mechanical properties of the ligtweight concrete were improved with the increase in the amount of fly ash. The best results were obtained from sample with 5% fly ash substitution. The use of industrial waste in a large sector such as construction, which adversely affects the ecological balance, will be an opportunity to dispose of waste.

Enhancing Burnability Characteristics of Low-Temperature Burnt-Cement Clinker by Recycling Phosphogypsum Wastes

    Aksan, U.; Köseoglu, K.; Gökçe, H. S.

In the present study, the effect of phosphogypsum, a byproduct from the phosphoric acid production industry, on the clinkerization process was researched in order to improve the burnability of clinkers at lower burning temperatures. Raw meal samples containing phosphogypsum at 0%, 1%, 3%, and 5% by weight were burned at 1,350 degrees C, 1,400 degrees C, 1,450 degrees C, and 1,500 degrees C. The introduction of phosphogypsum reduced the presence of unbounded (free) CaO relatively up to 43%. Thus, the mineralization effect of phosphogypsum promotes lower burning temperatures. The free CaO content of the 5% phosphogypsum containing clinker decreased to 0.94% at 1,400 degrees C after 120 min of burning time. The free CaO content was found to be almost identical (0.75%) to that of industrial clinker burned in a rotary kiln at 1,500 degrees C. Due to the low free CaO content (<1%) and the burnability index (73), the recycling of phosphogypsum wastes was found to be suitable for the production of eco-efficient clinkers. The reduced energy consumption and energy-related CO2 emissions in such modified clinkers can contribute to the economic and ecological goals of the cement industry. Development of gelatine-based edible film by addition of whey powders with different demineralisation ratios: Physicochemical, thermal, mechanical and microstructural characteristics

Sert, Durmuş; Üçok, Gamze; Kara, Ümmügülsüm; Mercan, E.M.İ.N.

The effects of using whey powders with different demineralisation rates on the physicochemical, thermal, mechanical, and microstructural properties of gelatine-based edible films were investigated. Films were produced from film-forming solutions (FFS) containing whey powder (WP) and 50, 70 and 90% demineralised whey powder (50DWP, 70DWP, 90DWP). The addition of whey powders increased the pH and particle size values of FFS. The zeta potential decreased significantly in the WP sample and gradually reduced depending on the demineralisation rate in the DWP samples. The addition of whey powders partially increased the density of the films. WP addition reduced the hydrophobicity of the film, while the addition of DWPs did not cause any change. The addition of whey powders decreased the L* and a* values of the films while increasing the b* values. Control was the most transparent, while 70DWP and 90DWP films had higher opacity. WP films had the most uniform and smooth surface. The highest degradation temperature (269.64 °C) was observed in the control sample. The weight loss of the control was 95%, whereas those of WP and DWP samples were 88–89%. WP addition reduced the tensile strength and increased the elasticity of the films.

In this study, the effect of wastewater pH on phosphate removal by electrocoagulation method using aluminum plate electrodes was investigated. For this purpose, experiments were carried out at initial pH values ranging from 3-10, and the effect of the initial pH of the wastewater on phosphate removal efficiency, energy consumption and reaction rate was analyzed. From the results obtained, it was determined that the initial pHs of the optimum wastewater was 3 and 4. Because at low pH, both phosphate removal efficiency is high and the energy consumption of the system is low. While 97% removal efficiency is reached in 20 minutes at pHi=3, it increases in this period with the increase of the wastewater initial pH. These data show that the removal rate is higher at lower initial pHs. While the 1st degree reaction rate constant at pHi=3 is k1=0.2154 min-1, this value decreases to k1=0.071 min-1 at pHi=10. At pHi=3, the energy consumption of the system has been determined as 0.553 kWh m-3 in 12 minutes of contact time. In addition, in the measurements made during the trials, it was observed that the highest PO4-P removal occurred during the period when the pH of the system was between 5-7.

Regioselective asymmetric bioreduction of trans-4-phenylbut-3-en-2-one by whole-cell of Weissella cibaria N9 biocatalyst

    Kalay, Erbay; Şahin, Engin

There is a considerable interest in the asymmetric production of chiral allylic alcohols, the main building blocks of many functional molecules. The asymmetric reduction of α,β-unsaturated ketones is difficult with traditional chemical protocols in a regioselective and stereoselective manner. In this study, the reductive capacity of whole cell of Leuconostoc mesenteroides N6, Weissella paramesenteroides N7, Weissella cibaria N9, and Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides N13 was investigated as whole-cell biocatalysts in the enantioselective reduction of (E)-4-phenylbut-3-en-2-one (1). The biocatalytic reduction of 1 to (S,E)-4-phenylbut-3-en-2-ol ((S,E)-2) using the whole cell of W. cibaria N9 isolated from Turkish sourdough was developed in a regioselective fashion, occurring with excellent conversion and recovering the product in good yield. In biocatalytic reduction reactions, the conversion of the substrate and the enantiomeric excess (ee) of the product are significantly affected by optimization parameters such as temperature, agitation rate, pH, and incubation time. Effects of these parameters on ee and conversion were investigated comprehensively. In addition, to our knowledge, this is the first report on production of (S,E)-2 using whole-cell biocatalyst in excellent yield, conversion with enantiopure form and at gram scale. These findings pave the way for the use of whole cell of W. cibaria N9 for challenging higher substrate concentrations of different α,β-unsaturated ketones for regioselective reduction at industrial scale.
