Güven, Ahmet Zeki; Yilmaz Karaca, Meryem; Banaz, Emrullah

The present study explores Turkish learners' approaches toward digital writing and how digital writing contributes to their language learning. For this purpose, we recruited 21 international students from 16 countries, 10 males and 11 females, who attended B2C1 -level Turkish language classes at the Akdeniz University Turkish Language Teaching Center in the 2021-2022 academic year. We recorded and transcribed the data collected through face-to-face interviews with a semi -structured interview form consisting of 6 questions. The data were then coded to generate themes, and the findings were grounded on the interpretation of these themes. Accordingly, the results uncovered that all participants engage in digital writing and mostly utilize WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram, YouTube, and Twitter as digital writing platforms. Moreover, they were found to usually mind proper spelling and punctuation and tend to use the T9 typing system in digital writing in Turkish. We also discovered that participants find auto -correction useful and sometimes misspell vowels, consonants, and longer words/consecutive suffixes due to differences between spoken and written languages. They particularly thought that digital writing contribute to their learning of Turkish. Overall, we comprehensively discussed the findings and raised some recommendations for future research.

Effects of Instructional Intervention Programs on Reading Skills of Students with Reading Difficulties

Filiz, Tunahan; Demir, Mustafa; Kaya, Metin

Evaluating the impacts of instructional intervention programs on students with reading difficulties is important for setting guidelines to teachers, researchers, and policy-makers. The aim of this research is to examine how these interventions initiatives impact the reading abilities of students diagnosed with reading difficulties (RD). 38 impact sizes obtained from 17 meta-analysis studies are analysed with second order meta-analysis method. These studies included are carried out between 1999 and 2023, and focus on the effects of instructional intervention programs on the reading abilities of individuals who experience difficulties in reading. Finally, in the analysis, it is decided that the impact of instructional intervention programmes on students with RD is mid-range (g=.50). Also, instructional intervention programs caused important differences according to the type of intervention, quality level, and the year of publication on the reading abilities of individuals with RD. It is determined that comprehension strategy instruction (CSI) intervention programs are more efficient than foundational reading skills instruction (FRSI) and multicomponent instruction (MI) intervention programs. It is necessary to make more experimental studies to determine if instructional interventions cause meaningful differences in terms of the characteristics of participant students. It can also be beneficial to carry out primary meta-analysis studies that test the impact of instructional interventions on the reading abilities of individuals with RD who are determined with standardized tests.

Charitaki, Garyfalia; Kourti, Isidora; Gregory, Jess L.; Ozturk, Mesut; Ismail, Zaleha; Alevriadou, Anastasia; Soulis, Spyridon-Georgios; Sakici, Şehnaz; Demirel, Can

The study aims to suggest a model for attitudes towards inclusive education that will yield a good fit across different countries. Moreover, we aim to explore the effect of years of teaching experience, educational work level of teachers, and the highest degree completed by teachers on teachers’ attitudes towards inclusion across different countries. A demographic scale and the ATTAS-mm were applied to 908 teachers employed in schools of general education or who offered parallel support and/or resources in five different countries (Greece, the UK, the USA, Malaysia, and Turkey). CFA suggested a 4-factor solution, which included the cognitive, affective, and behavioral factors that have been previously introduced by Gregory and Noto (2012), and a fourth factor, labeled overall attitudes towards teaching all students. In the cognitive factor, the UK had the most positive attitudes. TU, MA, and GR enrolled in the same cluster, and the USA had the least positive attitudes. In the affective factor, GR had the most positive attitude. MA and the USA enrolled in the same cluster and TU and the UK had the least positive attitudes. A similar pattern is observed for the behavioral factor with GR having the most positive attitude. TU and MA enrolled in the same cluster, and the USA and the UK had the least positive attitudes. Finally, years of teaching experience, educational work level, and the highest degree completed have a significant effect on teachers’ attitudes towards inclusion in all countries. Providing feedback for future research is the focal point of the discussion part.

The impact of inactivity during the COVID-19 pandemic on the physical performance of high school athletes

Asan, Selim; Ulupınar, Süleyman; Özbay, Serhat; Namlı, Sevinç; Gençoğlu, Cebrail; Canyurt, Ferhat; Çingöz, Yunus Emre; Özkara, Abdullah Bora

Background/Objective: This study was conducted during the 2019–2020 academic year to evaluate the impact of participation in school sports on students’ Body Mass Index (BMI) and Assessing Levels of Physical Activity (ALPHA) test scores. Interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to a suspension of in-person education, the study resumed in September 2021, refocusing on the effects of pandemic-induced inactivity on the physical fitness levels of the same cohort. Methods: The study included twenty-nine male high school students (age: 17,24 ± 0,73 years), divided into thirteen athletes (participating in sports such as football, basketball, and track) and sixteen non-athletic counterparts. They underwent reassessment using the ALPHA test battery, evaluating cardiorespiratory, musculoskeletal, and motor skills fitness. Data were analyzed using independent and paired samples t-tests and a two-way repeated measures ANOVA to assess changes over time and between groups. Discriminant function analysis evaluated the ALPHA test’s ability to classify students based on their athletic status pre- and post-pandemic. Results: Initially, athlete students exhibited significantly better BMI, 20 m shuttle run, and 4 × 10 m speed run scores compared to their non-athlete peers. After the pandemic, only the 20 m shuttle run scores remained significantly higher for athletes, with diminished distinctions in other fitness areas. The classification accuracy of the ALPHA test battery decreased from 89.7 to 75.9% post-pandemic. Conclusion: The enforced sedentary lifestyle due to the COVID-19 pandemic adversely affected all students, particularly diminishing health-related fitness parameters such as body composition, cardiorespiratory and musculoskeletal strength, and motor skills. Students previously engaged in regular physical activity, notably school athletes, experienced significant fitness declines. This highlights the urgent need for targeted interventions to encourage active lifestyles among youth in the post-pandemic phase, aiming to avert long-term adverse health outcomes.

Behind the Scenes: A Critical Perspective on GenAI and Open Educational Practices

    Aksoy, Dilara Arzugül; Kursun, Engin

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a rapidly evolving field that is influencing every aspect of life. Generative AI (GenAI) as a sub-branch of AI is used to create content in various formats such as text, images, video, and audio. This paper discusses the implications of GenAI for Open Educational Practices (OEP), highlighting the potential affordances and challenges. GenAI can address the challenges within the OEP by leveraging openness and ethical use. GenAI’s “generative” nature and human-like language capability can provide resources such as course material, activities, examples, questions, assessment, and learning outcomes in the context of OEP. With machine learning and deep learning infrastructure, it can support the discoverability and accessibility of open resources by increasing the metadata quality. GenAI can automatically score student assignments, answer their questions, and provide instant feedback to address the lack of interaction and feedback that arises due to the large number of students, especially in massive open online courses (MOOC). On the other hand, GenAI brings challenges such as data privacy and security, copyright, biased outputs, and the generation of false information. The conclusions emphasize the importance of a nuanced approach that considers not only the advantages but also the risks associated with adopting GenAI in the OEP world. Researching and developing how to apply these technologies to education is important to shape the future of education.

The Role of Picturebooks in Supporting the Mathematical Knowledge of Preschool Teacher Candidates

    Güven Akdeniz, Dilşad

Is children’s literature only beneficial to children? Or do the benefits of children’s literature also extend to the knowledge and mathematical skills of the teachers who employ it and reflect on it? This study seeks to investigate the role of picturebooks on the mathematical knowledge of preschool teacher candidates. For this purpose, in-depth examinations of how picturebooks can be used in teaching preschool mathematics and children’s literature. As well as the changes in the content knowledge of the teacher candidates, were done by conducting focus group interviews with teacher candidates. This is a qualitative case study consisting of focus group discussions in which high-level knowledge sharing and production can be achieved through interaction and associations. In the research, 11 picturebooks were discussed, and 8 teacher candidates participated in 6 focus group interviews lasting a total of 338 min throughout a 7 week period. The study’s findings have demonstrated that through children’s literature, teacher candidates’ misconceptions about measuring length can be revealed and eliminated without the need for another source, with discussions based on consciously and systematically selected picturebooks. Thus, it can be said that picturebooks act as a catalyst for the studies that aim to enhance the mathematical content knowledge of teacher candidates. The study has also observed that picturebooks can comprehensively address the fundamental concepts of length measurement.

Metacognitive training for algebra teaching to high school students: An action research study

    Okumuş, Özlem; Öztürk, Mesut

Metacognition is an essential concept in mathematics education research. Studies indicate that high school students in Turkey must demonstrate expected success in learning mathematics in general and algebra in particular. To this end, the Ministry of National Education has initiated a mathematical mobilization in Turkey. Mathematics mobilization is a project that will adapt the learning of mathematics to daily life skills, making learning more accessible and ensuring that students love this course from an early age. In the initial interviews with teachers as part of this mobilization, teachers stated that high school students needed to exhibit sufficient metacognitive planning and monitoring strategies. Therefore, they required assistance in planning and monitoring their learning processes and motivating them to learn. The literature shows that metacognitive planning and monitoring are effective in teaching algebra. In this context, the research “How can metacognitive strategies be developed in high school students’ algebra learning?” seeks an answer to this problem. Based on preliminary teacher interviews, the researchers created action plans in collaboration with teachers. In the circular model, researchers tested these action plans and revised them. As a result of the cycle being repeated three times, researchers developed a teaching technique based on metacognitive planning and monitoring for high school students. The study's findings demonstrate that metacognitive training taught students metacognitive planning, monitoring, prediction, awareness, and motivation strategies.

Özbilen, Uğur; Güven, Ahmet Zeki; Yiğit, Ömer; Kara, Ömer Tuğrul; Banaz, Emrullah

The main purpose of this study, explore the mediating role of career sustainability in the relationships between teacher self-efficacy, job satisfaction, and subjective well-being. Teachers should have an acceptable level of satisfaction regarding self-efficacy, career sustainability, and job satisfaction to secure well-being. In a sense, this claim mandates revealing the relationships between these variables. Accordingly, we collected data from 369 Turkish language teachers aged 24–55 years employed in public schools using the Teacher Self-Efficacy Scale, Short Index of Job Satisfaction, Career Sustainability Scale, and Subjective Well-Being Scale and tested a mediation model to seek answers to our hypotheses. We collected the data using an online questionnaire battery web-based survey (Google Forms) which was created using data collection measures and demographic items. After creating the survey using Google Forms, we distributed it through various channels such as email lists, social media platforms, and professional networks (e.g., teacher WhatsApp groups, teacher Telegram groups, etc.). Respondents were invited to participate in the survey voluntarily. The findings showed that career sustainability mediated the relationships between teacher self-efficacy, job satisfaction, and subjective well-being. Accordingly, we may claim that teachers with desirable career sustainability are likely to have increased job satisfaction and well-being, contributing to their self-efficacy. This research emphasises the essential significance of career sustainability in the overall well-being and work satisfaction of teachers. Future study should investigate treatments aimed at improving career sustainability and examine these linkages in other cultural settings.

Classification of Student Leadership Profiles in Diverse Governance Settings: Insights from Pisa 2022

Görgülü, Deniz; Coşkun, Fatma; Sipahioğlu, Mete; Demir, Mustafa

Student leadership prepares students for responsibilities, such as taking on specific tasks and assuming leadership roles in their future personal and professional lives. Developing students’ leadership profiles is among the important goals of educational systems aiming for future generations to take responsibility and advance their countries. With this perspective in mind, the PISA assessment includes items to measure students’ leadership behaviors. This study aims to extract student leadership profiles from the leadership-related items in the PISA 2022 application, using data from Cambodia, Peru, Paraguay, and Guatemala, which have different governance systems and cultural characteristics. The second purpose of the research is to determine the distribution of the identified leadership profiles in these countries and explain them in the context of governance and cultural characteristics. Latent class analysis was used to determine student leadership profiles. Accordingly, two-class and three-class latent models were found to be the most suitable models to explain student profiles. While the distinction between student profiles is more pronounced in the two-class model, the three-class model provides more detailed information about student profiles. In this respect, two-class and three-class latent models are reported comparatively. In the two-class latent model, students are labeled as the “Shy or Lack of Self-Confidence Group” and the “Active Leader or Influential Group”. In the three-class latent model, students are labeled as the “Moderate or Passive Leader Group”, the “Strong Leader or Influential Group”, and the “Avoidant or Leadership-Uncomfortable Group”. In both models, it is one of the striking findings that Cambodian students are in the low leadership profile, and Peruvian students are in the high leadership profile.
