Determination of Propagation Constants and Wave Impedance of Non-Reciprocal Networks From Position-Insensitive Waveguide Measurements

Hasar, Ugur C.; Kaya, Yunus; Izginli, Mucahit; Ozturk, Hamdullah; Barroso, Joaquim J.; Ramahi, Omar M.; Ertugrul, Mehmet

A microwave method is proposed to determine the forward and backward propagation constants (gamma ⁺ and gamma ⁻) and the wave impedance ( z_w ) of reciprocal and non-reciprocal microwave networks whose positions are not known within their measurement cells (position-insensitive). The proposed method relies purely on analytical expressions and can also evaluate the reference plane transformation distances. Scattering parameter measurements at the X-band (8.2-12.4 GHz) of a reciprocal network (a waveguide straight) and a non-reciprocal network (a microwave phase shifter) arbitrarily positioned into their measurement cells were conducted to retrieve gamma ⁺, gamma ⁻, and z_w for validation of our method and testing its position-insensitive property. The importance of the method becomes apparent when compared to conventional methods whose accuracy is based on precise determination of the reference planes.

Complex Permittivity and Thickness Evaluation of Low-Loss Dielectrics From Uncalibrated Free-Space Time-Domain Measurements

Hasar, Ugur Cem; Kaya, Yunus; Ozturk, Hamdullah; Izginli, Mucahit; Barroso, Joaquim Jose; Ramahi, Omar M.; Ertugrul, Mehmet

A free-space time-domain method is proposed to retrieve dielectric constant (epsilon r), conductivity (sigma e), and thickness (d) of metal-backed low-loss dielectric samples using calibration-independent reflected power peak measurements. Its algorithm is validated by numerical calculations and simulations (CST Microwave Studio) using a sine-modulated Gaussian window. A sensitivity analysis is followed to examine its performance considering the dependencies of reflected power peaks with respect to epsilon r and sigma e. Free-space time-domain measurements have been implemented after transforming frequency-domain measurements into time-domain ones to extract epsilon r, sigma e, and d of polypropylene, polyethylene, and polyoxymethylene samples.

Nanoscale biomaterials are commonly used in a wide range of biomedical applications such as bone graft substitutes, gene delivery systems, and biologically active agents. On the other hand, the cytotoxic potential of these particles hasn't yet been studied comprehensively to understand whether or not they exert any negative impact on the cellular structures. Here, we undertook the synthesis of beta-tricalcium phosphate (beta-TCP) and biphasic tricalcium phosphate (BCP) nanoparticles (NPs) and determine their concentration-dependent toxic effects in human fetal osteoblastic (hFOB 1.19) cell line. Firstly, BCP and beta-TCP were synthesized using a water-based precipitation technique and characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Raman Spectroscopy, and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The cytological effects of beta-TCP and BCP at different concentrations (0-640 ppm) were evaluated by using 3- (4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl) -2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assays. The total oxidative status (TOS) parameter was used for investigating oxidative stress potentials of the NPs. In addition, the study assessed the DNA damage product 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-Oxo-dG) level in hFOB 1.19 cell cultures. The results indicated that the beta-TCP (above 320 ppm) and BCP (above 80 ppm) NPs exhibited cytotoxicity effects on high concentrations. It was also observed that the oxidative stress increased relatively as the concentrations of NPs increased, aligning with the cytotoxicity results. However, the NPs concentrations of 160 ppm and above increased the level of 8-OH-dG. Consequently, there is a need for more systematic in vivo and in vitro approaches to the toxic effects of both nanoparticles.

Feasible Extraction Method for Electromagnetic Properties of Multilayer Metamaterials With Short-Circuit Termination

Hasar, Ugur Cem; Ozturk, Gokhan; Kaya, Yunus; Bute, Musa; Karaaslan, Muharrem; Barroso, Joaquim J.; Ramahi, Omar M.; Ertugrul, Mehmet

An extraction technique is proposed for electromagnetic characterization of metal-backed multilayer metamaterial (MM) structures demonstrating reflection-asymmetric property. It uses recursive scattering parameters for direct and reversed configurations of a multilayer structure. The algorithm was validated by comparing the extracted electromagnetic properties of multilayer structures composed of different MM unit cells with those determined by one-layer-only S-parameter methods. Two-layer and three-layer multilayer structures composed of MM slabs with C-shaped and Omega-shaped rings and an FR4 material were fabricated and measured for experimental validation. A sensitivity analysis was also conducted to quantitatively evaluate the performance of our method against a small air gap between the multilayer structures and the short-circuit termination and between adjacent MM slabs within these structures. Strong agreement was observed between the resulted obtained using our method and measurements.

Pelletizing ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) powders with a novel tapered die and addition of high density polyethylene (HDPE): Processing, morphology, and properties

Yang, Huaguang; Yilmaz, Galip; Jiang, Jing; Xie, Jun; Langstraat, Thomas; Chu, Raymond; van Es, Martin; Garg, Priya; Turng, Lih-Sheng

The extremely high molecular weight and molecular entanglement have rendered ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) superior properties. However, poor inter-particle diffusion makes it difficult to pelletize UHMWPE powders for easy processing/handling. A novel tapered die with air cooling was proposed to pelletize UHMWPE and a UHMWPE blend with 5 wt% high-density polyethylene (HDPE) for compression molding and material characterization. The tensile strength of samples prepared with the tapered die outperformed those by the regular die or from virgin powders. The addition of HDPE further improved the tensile strength. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) revealed little chain scission and the lowest amount of oxidation from the tapered die. Intrinsic viscosity (IV) measurements confirmed the negligible chain scission and showed an increment in IV for the UHMWPE/HDPE blend. Multi-angle light scattering with size-exclusion chromatography (SEC-MALS) indicated no change in the UHMWPE molecular weight distribution, but some crosslinking in the blend. Polarized optical microscopy (POM) showed that the HDPE and extrusion led to a finer UHMWPE domain size and better fusion between UHMWPE and HDPE. The combined effect of enhanced molecular chain diffusion, improved consolidation, and lower oxidation using the tapered die led to 40% improvement of tensile strength for the UHMWPE/HDPE blend.

Foreign direct investment and the unemployment: a causality analysis for the brics countries

    Arı, Ari

The paper examines the FDI-Unemployment nexus for BRICS countries using annual time series data covering the period of (1992-2018). The variables in the analysis were checked using Augmented Dickey Fuller test statistics. The results obtained indicated that all variables were stationary at first difference for all countries except South Africa which was found to be stationary at level. The results reveal that there is a co-integration relationship between the variables only for India. In other words, there is not a relationship between unemployment and FDI inflows for Brazil, China and Russia. According to Granger Causality Test results, there is a unidirectional causality link flowing from unemployment to FDI inflows for India. This finding is in line with the theory which states that foreign direct investments are attracted in countries where they observe the existence of available work force. The paper recommends that India should focus on designing policies for attracting the foreign investors due to the fact that India has an important potential in this domain

Examination of teacher candidates' perception of tourists

    Degirmenci, Yavuz

In today's world, tourism is one of the areas that both countries and individuals are interested in.While tourism offers opportunities to countries in various aspects primarily in economic terms, it has always been an area of interest for individuals as well. The most important actors in this area are undoubtedly individuals, in other terms, tourists. On the other hand, individuals' perception of tourists, who are in interaction with nature, the environment and local elements, is considered to be of importance and it isthought that this perception may affect tourism activities in various terms. Therefore, the present study aims to examine the tourist perceptions of teacher candidates who took tourism classes during their undergraduate education. The study was carried out with 142 teacher candidates studying in the Department of Social Studies Teaching inthe Faculty of Education at a state university in Turkey in the spring semester of the 2019-2020 academic year. Molecular Approach to Detecting Pollen Types In Honey: DNA Barcoding

    Ecem Bayram, Nesrin

Nowadays, the demand for bee products has also increased due to the growing interest in natural products. Althoughit is quite easy to adulteration of honey, which is one of these products, it is also very difficult to detect adulteration. In the point of detecting forgery, studies are being carried out specifically to identify the plant sources of honey.Melissopalynological and chemical analyses are methods commonly used in order to identify the botanical origin of honey.Despite the fact that the detection of botanical origin of honey by DNA-based methods which provide faster, simpler andmore reliable results are being carried out in recent years, these researches are very less in Turkey. Unlike morphologicalmethods, which require the visual examination of pollen grains, the recently developed genetic methods have the potentialto increase the resolution and scale of pollen analyses. In this study, the aim was to present cumulative data by compilingthe results of the studies conducted using molecular techniques on honey, and the advantages and disadvantages of thistechnique were evaluated.
