Effects of ozone treatment to milk and whey concentrates on degradation of antibiotics and aflatoxin and physicochemical and microbiological characteristics

    Sert, Durmuş; Mercan, Emin

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the ozone treatment (OT) to milk concentrate (MC) and whey concentrate (WC) on the physicochemical and textural properties, as well as, on the microbial, antibiotic, and aflatoxin content. For that purpose, OT was applied to MC and WC samples 0 (control), 5, 10, 15, 30, or 60 min. OT (60 min) achieved 18.9 and 9.9% degradation of aflatoxin M1 in MC and WC, respectively. OT caused degradation of β–lactam, and tetracycline in concentrates. Volume mean diameter of MC was increased by OT, those of WC was decreased. The firmness and consistency values of ozone-treated concentrates were lower than the control groups. OT decreased the cohesivity of MC. OT increased the lightness of samples, while it decreased yellowness. In MC and WC samples, OT was effective in reducing the microbial load. The degradation of antibiotics and aflatoxin, and reducing the microbial load of concentrates by OT are crucial for human health and the processing of dairy products.

An Action Research on Improving Classroom Communication and Interaction in Social Studies Teaching

    Aksoy, Mutlu; Ceylan, Tuncay

The aim of this research is to reveal how communication and interaction in classrooms can be enhanced with the communicative approach education provided for social studies teachers. The participants of this research were five social studies teachers working at secondary schools and their 7th grade students, N = 110. The data collection tools adopted in this research were video and audio recordings, documents, semistructured interview forms, and stimulated recall interview forms. The data obtained from recordings of lessons were analyzed using the communicative approach, and the data obtained from document review and interview were analyzed using the content analysis method. The results of the study show that social studies curriculum contains items that require both dialogical and authoritative discourses and that the course books are prepared accordingly, but teachers as the practitioners of the program do not conduct their lessons accordingly. Instead, all the teachers participating in the research used only authoritative (interactive/noninteractive) approaches and they did not include dialogical (interactive/noninteractive) approaches at all. This situation, which is seen as a problem in terms of conducting successful in-class communication and interaction, has been solved in three action cycles with one of the teachers. The teacher who used only authoritative (interactive/noninteractive) approaches in her lessons prior to the trainings started to include dialogical (interactive/noninteractive) approaches too. It was also observed that the teacher's impression of the lessons carried out by adopting the communicative approach model was positive. As a result of the research, it was concluded that the communicative approach model is applicable in the social studies course. It can be said that the trainings given to the teachers created awareness about the use of the communicative approach model in classroom communication and interaction and provided benefits in diversifying discourse styles.

Discrete sizing design of steel truss bridges through teaching-learning-based and biogeography-based optimization algorithms involving dynamic constraints

    Artar, Musa; Carbas, Serdar

In this paper, Teaching-Learning Based Optimization (TLBO) and Biogeography-Based Optimization (BBO) algorithms are presented to examine the optimum discrete sizing design of steel truss steel bridges for minimizing the structural weights. Both proposed nature-inspired metaheuristic optimization algorithms are encoded in MATLAB with integration of a structural analysis program (SAP2000) via open application programming interface (OAPI). At the end, optimal steel profiles are selected from available discrete section lists by satisfying the structural restrictions, such as stress and displacement, involved by American Institute of Steel Construction-Allowable Stress Design (AISC-ASD). Additional to these, optimum discrete sizing design process is performed for the cases with and without dynamic constraints, which are adopted from natural periods of the bridge structures with respect to the mode shapes. The algorithmic performance of the proposed algorithms outperforms on both planar and spatial steel truss bridges. To prove this obtained optimal solutions are compared with previously reported optimum designs attaining via different metaheuristics. The final optimum discrete sizing designs of the steel truss bridges reveal that the proposed TLBO and BBO algorithms can easily be applied to discrete nonlinear programming problems.

Comparison of kinetics of Cr (III) ions removal from wastewater using raw and activated montmorillonite minerals

İrdemez, Şahset; Durmuş, Gül; Kul, Sinan; Torun, Fatma Ekmekyapar; Bingül, Züleyha

In this study, kinetics of the removal of Cr (III) from the waters by adsorption have been investigated using montmorillonite natural clay that was obtained from the vicinity of Narman, Erzurum in Turkey. Activation energy, thermodynamic values and adsorption kinetics were determined. In addition, the trials were repeated by subjecting to the same adsorbent activation process. The values found for these two adsorbents were compared. As a result of the experiments, the parameters affecting the adsorption kinetics were examined. It was determined that the adsorption process could be best depicted by pseudo second order reaction kinetics. Using pseudo second order reaction rate constants, ΔH° =-25.791 kJ mol-1 and ΔS° = 106.19 joule mol-1 were calculated for raw adsorbent. For the activated adsorbent, ΔH° =-18,806 kJ mol-1 and ΔS° = 79.37 joule mol-1 were calculated. That ΔG° increases as temperature increases indicates; adsorption is more spontaneous at high temperatures. Negative ΔH° values show that the reaction is exothermic. The positive values of ΔS° indicate increased randomness at the adsorbent/solution interface during the adsorption of chrome.

Frozen image analysis of a superconducting magnetic levitation system consisting of multi-surface superconductor and Halbach array permanent magnet configuration

Cansiz, Ahmet; Reisoglu, Ahmet F.; Ozturk, Kemal; Abdioglu, Murat

Levitation strength provided by high temperature superconductors are limited for device applications. Although superconducting material properties are continuously improving, there is still strong necessity of efficient design mechanisms for the superconducting magnetic levitation systems. Studies in the last decades have shown that combining multi-surface superconductor and permanent magnet components in optimum configurations has improved the levitation forces. In this respect, Halbach arraying permanent magnets interacting with multi-surface superconductors has become one of the most utilized methods. This paper investigates frozen image modeling of the levitation and guidance forces on a particular levitation system, which consists of a permanent magnet guideway and high temperature superconductor car body. The levitation enhancement is investigated for three configurations according to force interactions between the guideway and car body. These configurations are based on the use of single permanent magnet-single superconductor, Halbach array permanent magnets-single superconductor and Halbach array permanent magnets-multi-surface superconductors. The vertical and guidance forces for the present configurations were calculated in terms of field cooling and zero field cooling conditions by using frozen image model with magnetic dipole approximation. The predicted force calculations are analyzed in terms of vertical and lateral traverses of the car body respect to guideway for particular measurement distances. The force analysis provided by frozen image model qualitatively agree with the previously obtained experimental data.

Application of Third-Order Schemes to Improve the Convergence of the Hardy Cross Method in Pipe Network Analysis

    Niazkar, Majid; Türkkan, Gökçen Eryilmaz

In this study, twenty-two new mathematical schemes with third-order of convergence are gathered from the literature and applied to pipe network analysis. The presented methods were classified into one-step, two-step, and three-step schemes based on the number of hypothetical discharges utilized in solving pipe networks. The performances of these new methods and Hardy Cross method were compared by solving a sample pipe network considering four different scenarios (92 cases). The results show that the one-step methods improve the rate of convergence of the Hardy Cross method in 10 out of 24 cases (41%), while this improvement was found to be 39 out of 56 cases (69.64%) and 5 out of 8 cases (62.5%) for the two-step and three-step methods, respectively. This obviously indicates that the modified schemes, particularly the three-step methods, improve the performance of the original loop corrector method by taking lower number of iterations with the compensation of relatively more computational efforts.

Effect of sample deformation in longitudinal axis on material parameter extraction by waveguides

Hasar, Ugur Cem; Kaya, Yunus; Ozturk, Gokhan; Ertugrul, Mehmet

An analysis was performed for examining the consequences of sample deformation in longitudinal axis in the sample-loaded non-resonant waveguide techniques. Vertical and horizontal deformations were first simulated to understand the change in field distributions and corresponding scattering parameters. Then, effects of sample length, dielectric constant, and loss factor for these deformations on extracted electromagnetic properties were analyzed using simulated results. Finally, S-parameter measurements were carried out to understand the effect of vertical deformation on permittivity results and to examine any improper sample preparation by hand-made and machine-made samples by applying a statistical model based on mean, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, and confidence interval. It was noted that extracted dielectric constants of each tested dielectric sample (polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl-chloride) were within the confidence interval range of 90% while their retrieved loss factors were within the confidence interval range of 90%, 95%, or 98%.

Processing of skim milk powder made using sonicated milk concentrates: A study of physicochemical, functional, powder flow and microbiological characteristics

Sert, Durmuş; Mercan, Emin; Dinkul, Muhsin; Aydemir, Serdar

The impact of sonication treatment (0, 5, 15, 30, and 60 min) of skim milk concentrates on physicochemical, functional, powder flow behaviour, and microbiological properties of milk powders was investigated. Sonication resulted in higher firmness and consistency of concentrates with increasing treatment time. In milk powders, higher L∗ and a∗ values were observed in sonicated samples. D[4,3] parameter of milk powders was between 8.1 and 255.0 μm, and sonication for 60 min decreased this value. Sonication significantly decreased the caking, cohesion, and compaction properties of samples. The flow stability of sonicated samples was higher than that of the control. Sonication can result in improved flow characteristics of milk powders in terms of caking, cohesion, and compaction. These observations could relate to effects of sonication on casein micelle, whey proteins denaturation, whey/whey or casein/whey aggregation. Sonication of milk concentrates was also effective in reducing the microbial counts of milk powders.
