Erdem, Belgin; Kaya, Halil İbrahim; Tulumoğlu, Şener; Coteli, Ebru; Şimşek, Ömer

Fermented foods constitute a valuable source of probiotics for both bacteria and yeasts. To date, however, there has been a limited amount of research conducted on Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Kazakhstania servazzi, Kluyveromyces marxianus and Torulaspora delbrueckii isolated from tarhana. The objective of the research is to identify additional probiotic characteristics other than the leavening activity exhibited by yeasts that were previously isolated from tarhana fermentation. In this study, yeasts were subjected to subsequent acid and bile salt tolerance, bile salt hydrolysis, antagonistic activity, aggregation activity (auto-aggregation and co-aggregation), cholesterol assimilation, folate production, biofilm production, and hemolysis activity. S. cerevisiae PCF122, S. cerevisiae PCF107, and S. cerevisiae PCF134 strains grew at pH 2 and 2,5 but remained at pH 3. Except for S. cerevisiae PCF115 and T. delbrueckii PCF150, all yeasts were found to be 0,5% and 1,0% oxalate tolerant. All yeasts hydrolyze oxalate (bile salt), but only S. cerevisiae PCF115 and T. delbrueckii PCF150 produced EPS. Yeasts also exhibited significant amounts of autoaggregation (46–87%). After 24 and 48 h incubation, all strains assimilated cholesterol at rates ranging from 10,4% to 87,5% and 10,6–91%, respectively. The highest folate production was determined at S. cerevisiae PCF108 (56 µg/mL) and the lowest was at S. cerevisiae PCF110 and K. marxianus PFC120 (18 µg/mL). In conclusion, yeasts that existed in tarhana fermentation showed cholesterol assimilation, folate production, and aggregation activity which are additional probiotic attributes that would have consumer health promotion, beside these yeast leaven the tarhana dough.

An Examination of Factors Affecting Pre-service Science Teachers' Perceived Satisfaction Levels in Distance Education

Arici, Faruk; Salar, Rıza; Yilmaz, Rabia Meryem

With the advancement of technology, traditional classroom environments have been increasingly replaced by technology-driven learning settings. This transition has been further accelerated by global crises such as wars, health emergencies, and economic instability, pushing education beyond conventional boundaries. Among these settings, e-learning has significantly enhanced the accessibility and availability of education. This study aimed to examine the relationships between perceived satisfaction, learning outcomes, course structure, course content, instructor role, instructor feedback, and technology quality in e-learning. It also investigated the factors influencing university students' perceived satisfaction in both asynchronous and synchronous e-learning settings. The study involved 247 university students (47 males and 200 females) who participated in a one-year distance education program in science education. After attending synchronous and asynchronous courses for 14 weeks, data was collected. The findings revealed that students did not perceive distance education as more effective than face-to-face instruction. However, with an explained variance of 77%, the proposed model demonstrated that learning outcomes, course structure, course content, instructor role, instructor feedback, and technology quality significantly influenced perceived satisfaction. Among these, learning outcomes, course content, and technology quality had a direct impact. These findings highlight the need for educational institutions to enhance the quality of course content, technology infrastructure, and learning outcomes in e-learning environments to improve student satisfaction and engagement.

The Role of Techno-Ethical Classroom Behavior and Metacognitive Experiences Over Time in Students’ Artificial Intelligence Addictions

    Durmus, Ibrahim

The study aims to identify the factors that may influence university students’ artificial intelligence addiction in educational activities. The study sample consists of 415 students currently studying at Bayburt University. The snowball sampling method was used in the research. In the study, an electronic survey was conducted with university students. The research surveys were distributed to students attending face-to-face education at various departments of Bayburt University by academic staff (or educators). Students participated in the study voluntarily. In the research application, statistical analysis programs such as SPSS, SPSS Process Macro, and AMOS were utilized. The study was designed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The analyses revealed relational outcomes of the research variables, along with the demographic information of the students. In the analyses, results for both direct effect hypotheses and moderator effect hypotheses were also presented. The study explores the relationships between negative classroom behavior from a techno-ethical perspective, positive and negative metacognitive experiences related to the passage of time, and artificial intelligence addiction. The results of the study indicate that negative classroom behavior from a techno-ethical perspective increases students’ artificial intelligence addiction. The students’ negative techno-ethical classroom behavior reduced their positive metacognitive experiences related to the passage of time. At the same time, increased their negative metacognitive experiences related to the passage of time. Students’ positive and negative metacognitive experiences associated with time also increased their artificial intelligence addiction. It was observed that many students dedicated more than two hours, or between two and one hour, to artificial intelligence and its applications in their daily activities. In the relationship between negative techno-ethical classroom behavior and artificial intelligence addiction, the daily usage time of artificial intelligence played a moderating role. The daily usage time of artificial intelligence strengthened the relationship between negative techno-ethical classroom behavior and artificial intelligence addiction. There was also a moderating effect of positive metacognitive experiences related to the passage of time in the relationship between negative techno-ethical classroom behavior and artificial intelligence addiction. The student’s educational status and gender were found to have moderating effects on the relationship between negative techno-ethical classroom behavior and artificial intelligence addiction.

The structural, optical, topographical, and H2 sensing characteristics of a Zn-doped Fe2O3 thin layer deposited via DC & RF magnetron co-sputtering method

Merhan Muğlu, Günay; Şenay, Volkan; Saritaş, Sevda; Abdolahpour Salari, Maryam; Kundakçi, Mutlu

In this study, a Zn-doped iron oxide layer was deposited onto a microscope slide using the magnetron co-sputtering technique with direct current (DC) and radio frequency (RF) sources. We comprehensively characterized the resulting Zn-doped Fe2O3 thin layer, employing techniques such as XRD, Raman spectroscopy, UV–VIS spectrophotometry, SEM, EDX, & AFM. XRD examination showed the nanocrystalline structure in the thin layer under investigation. Based on recorded absorption data, the band gap energy value calculation resulted in a value of 2.23 eV for the thin film. Raman spectroscopy identified peaks possessing Raman shifts from 100 to 1400 cm−1. SEM investigation illustrated a consistently uniform thin film surface characteristic throughout the substrate. Additionally, the AFM study disclosed a small RMS roughness value, indicative of an unrough surface for the Zn: Fe2O3 thin layer. The Fe2O3 thin film doped with Zn employing a 30 W DC voltage demonstrated effective hydrogen sensing capability at 300 °C, achieving notable response and recovery time. This work presents a novel application of Zn-doped Fe2O3 thin films as highly sensitive and stable hydrogen sensors, tailored for high-temperature environments. The unique combination of nanocrystalline structure and Zn doping optimizes the material’s electronic properties, enhancing its responsiveness to hydrogen gas. This approach offers a scalable, cost-effective pathway for developing advanced sensor technologies suited to environmental monitoring, industrial safety, and hazardous gas detection, making it a valuable addition to the field of gas-sensing materials.

The Relationship Between Metacognitive Beliefs and Salivary Cortisol, BDNF, and NDNF Levels: A Cross-Sectional Study

Okur, Süheyb; Bayraktar, Bülent; Tosun Köse, Fatma

Purpose: The main objective of this study is to non-invasively investigate the relationship between metacognitive beliefs and cortisol, the primary stress output of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, as well as neurotrophic factors associated with neuroplasticity brain-derived neurotrophic factor and neuron-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF and NDNF). Within this framework, the hypotheses that negative metacognitions would be associated with increased cortisol and decreased BDNF levels, and that cortisol might play a mediating role in this relationship, were tested. Method: The study was designed in a cross-sectional model with 60 university students. Participants' metacognitive beliefs were measured using the Metacognitions Questionnaire-30 (MCQ-30). Salivary cortisol, BDNF, and NDNF levels were analyzed using the ELISA method. Pearson correlation and hierarchical multiple regression analyses were used for data analysis. Finding: The results showed a significant positive relationship between the total metacognition score and cortisol (r = 0.589, p < 0.01) and a strong negative relationship between cortisol and BDNF (r = −0.662, p < 0.01). Hierarchical regression analysis supported a partial mediation model, indicating that dysfunctional metacognitive beliefs have both a significant direct negative association with BDNF and an indirect association mediated by cortisol. In the final model, both metacognition (β = –0.298, p < 0.05) and cortisol (β = –0.281, p < 0.05) were significant factors associated with lower BDNF levels. NDNF showed a positive relationship with BDNF (r = 0.571) but not with other variables. Conclusion: These findings point to a psychobiological model where dysfunctional metacognitive beliefs are linked to suppressed neuroprotective mechanisms like BDNF, both directly and indirectly through HPA axis activation. The results shed light on the potential neurobiological mechanisms underlying the effectiveness of metacognitive therapies.

Thawing frozen foods: A comparative review of traditional and innovative methods

Çalışkan Koç, Gülşah; Özkan Karabacak, Azime; Süfer, Özge; Adal, Samiye; Çelebi, Yasemin; Delikanlı Kıyak, Berrak; Öztekin, Sebahat

Due to the changing consumer lifestyles, the tendency to adopt foods that require less preparation time and offer both variety and convenience has played a significant role in the development of the frozen food industry. Freezing is one of the fundamental food preservation techniques, as it maintains high product quality. Freezing reduces chemical and enzymatic reactions, lowers water activity, and prevents microbial growth, thereby extending the shelf life of foods. The freezing and thawing procedures directly impact the quality of frozen foods. The degree of tissue damage is determined by the freezing rate and the structure of the ice crystals that form during the freezing process. Generally, thawing occurs more slowly than freezing. During thawing, microorganisms, as well as chemical and physical changes, can cause nutrient damage. Thus, the goal of this review is to identify innovative and optimal thawing strategies. In order to save energy and/or improve quality, new chemical and physical thawing aids are being developed alongside emerging techniques such as microwave-assisted, ohmic-assisted, high pressure, acoustic thawing, and so on. In addition to discussing the possible uses of these technologies for the thawing process and their effects on food quality, the purpose of this study is to present a thorough comparative overview of recent advancements in thawing techniques.

Bayrakdaroğlu, Serdar; Ateş, Zeynep Hazal; Ceylan, Halil İbrahim; Kul, Murat; Muntean, Raul Ioan; Dhahbi, Wissem

Background: Nutrient timing strategies may influence recovery and performance in athletes; however, the effects of ingesting casein protein before sleep versus immediately after exercise remain unclear. This study compared the acute effects of pre-sleep and post-exercise ingestion of casein on high-intensity anaerobic performance in highly trained soccer players. Methods: Twenty-four highly trained male soccer players (mean age: 20.6 ± 1.8 years) were randomly assigned to three groups: post-exercise casein ingestion group (PECIG; n = 8), pre-sleep casein ingestion group (PSCIG; n = 8), and control group (CG; n = 8). Following a standardized high-intensity resistance training protocol, participants consumed 30 g of micellar casein dissolved in 300 mL of water either immediately after exercise or 30–60 min before bedtime. Performance was assessed using the Countermovement Jump (CMJ), the Illinois Agility Test (IAT), and the Running-based Anaerobic Sprint Test (RAST), which were conducted both before and 24 h after the training session. Results: Repeated-measures ANOVA revealed significant group-by-time effects for CMJ (F = 8.21, p = 0.002, η2p = 0.36) and RAST performance variables, including peak power (F = 6.94, p = 0.003, η2p = 0.32), mean power (F = 7.42, p = 0.002, η2p = 0.34), and fatigue index (F = 5.87, p = 0.008, η2p = 0.28). Post hoc analyses showed that PSCIG significantly improved CMJ (Δ = +1.45 cm; p < 0.001, d = 2.04) and RAST mean power (Δ = +125.14 W; p = 0.002, d = 1.55) compared with the control condition. PECIG significantly enhanced RAST peak power (Δ = +205.79 W; p = 0.001, d = 1.64), mean power (Δ = +128.43 W; p = 0.013, d = 1.24), and fatigue index (Δ = +4.12 W/s; p = 0.010, d = 1.29) relative to CG. No performance differences were observed between PSCIG and PECIG timing conditions (all p > 0.05). Conclusions: Both pre-sleep and post-exercise casein ingestion enhanced anaerobic performance in highly trained soccer players, with each timing method favoring different performance outcomes. However, neither strategy demonstrated superiority over the other, suggesting that casein timing may be flexibly applied according to athletes’ preferences and training contexts.

Comparison of the acute effects of static and dynamic stretching exercises on the balance performance of Turkish wrestlers

Durukan, Erdil; Aydin, Gokhan; Goktepe, Mehmet; Cicek, Guner; Guder, Ferhat; Isik, Ozkan

Background: The importance of dynamic and static stretching exercises on motoric abilities before an athletic performance is well known. However, there is limited information about their effects on balance performance. For this reason, this study aimed to investigate the acute effects of static and dynamic stretching exercises on wrestlers’ balance performance and compare wrestlers’ balance levels according to their wrestling styles. Method: A total of 28 wrestlers who performed dynamic stretching (n = 14) and static stretching (n = 14) protocols voluntarily participated in the study. Data were collected using Togu Challenge Disc 2.0. An independent samples t-test was applied to compare the data that were determined to show normal distribution. Results: When comparing dynamic balance according to warm-up protocols, it was found that there was a significant difference in favor of wrestlers who performed dynamic stretching (p = 0.023). However, no statistically significant difference was found between static and dynamic stretching groups in terms of static balance (p = 0.238). Additionally, while a significant difference was observed in the wrestlers’ dynamic balance scores in both dynamic and static stretching exercises in favor of freestyle wrestlers (p = 0.008; p = 0.022), a significant difference was found in static balance scores in favor of Greco-Roman wrestlers (p = 0.014; p = 0.018). Conclusion: Dynamic stretching exercises were found to support wrestlers’ balance performance more than static stretching. The results showed that the different warm-up protocols applied before training and competition can have different effects on the wrestlers’ performance. Therefore, it is suggested that wrestlers should prefer warm-up protocols including dynamic stretching exercises to optimize pre-performance balance outcomes.

Numerical Investigation of EDS Maglev Systems in Terms of Performance and Cost for Different PMs-Aluminum Rail Arrangements

Mollahasanoglu, Hakki; Abdioglu, Murat; Ozturk, Ufuk Kemal; Okumus, Halil Ibrahim; Coskun, Elvan; Gencer, Ali

Permanent-magnet electro-dynamic suspension (PMs-EDS) maglev systems are shaping the future of modern transport by providing high-speed, energy-efficient, and sustainable transport solutions. In this study, numerical simulations were performed to determine the optimum geometrical parameters of aluminum rail and permanent magnet arrangements for EDS systems. For that, the aluminum rail and permanent magnet combinations were investigated, and then the same simulations were repeated by creating cavities in the aluminum rails for cost efficiency. The highest levitation-to-drag ratio (LDR) was achieved with magnet arrays having a fill factor of 0.4, 20 mm thick aluminum, and an aluminum rail width of 60 mm. Additionally, by creating cavities into the rails, it was calculated that approximately $2.44 million could be saved from the total cost of $17.34 million cost of the 1000 km double-strip aluminum rails, with negligible reduction in the LDR ratio. The findings of this study provide a sustainable and economical transport solution by increasing the cost effectiveness of PMs-EDS maglev systems. The results obtained may pave the way for the development of different types of applications of maglev technology and increase the potential for commercial use of maglev transport systems.

Effects of Augmented Reality and Video-Based Learning in Inquiry-Based Science Education on Academic Achievement and Motivation to Learn Science

    Arici, Faruk; Yilmaz, Rabia Meryem

Background: Inquiry-based learning (IbL) has significantly contributed to science education, and this impact can be enhanced with technology. Augmented Reality (AR) offers 3D visualisation and interactive experiences, whereas Video-based Learning (VbL) provides narratives with visual and audio support. Both methods aid students in exploring, understanding and boosting their motivation to learn science (MtLS). Objectives: This study examines the effect of AR and VbL within an IbL environment on students' MtLS and academic achievement. Methods: A mixed-method research design was used, with a quasi-experimental approach for the quantitative aspect and a multiple case study for the qualitative part. Participants included two experimental groups and a control group. Experiment 1 (25 participants) received AR and IbL, Experiment 2 (26 participants) received VbL and IbL and the control group (25 participants) received only IbL instruction. Data were collected using academic achievement tests, MtLS scales and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative data were analysed via ANCOVA using SPSS, whereas qualitative data underwent content analysis. Results and Conclusions: Results indicated that AR technology in the IbL environment was more effective than VbL in enhancing academic achievement and MtLS. The VbL group also performed better than the IbL-only group. With regard to the MtLS subfactors, no significant differences were observed between the groups in terms of motivation for participation. However, Experiment-1 demonstrated significant improvement in motivation for conducting research and motivation for collaboration, compared to Experiment-2 and the control group. Experiment 2 showed significant results compared to the control group. Experiment-1 demonstrated significant improvement in motivation for performance and motivation for communication compared to the control group. Although Experiment-1 yielded higher results than Experiment-2, this difference was not significant. Experiment 2 and the control group demonstrate notable parallels. The findings of this study indicate that AR effectively supports academic achievement and MtLS in an IbL environment. Consequently, the utilisation of AR is advocated for middle school students engaged in the study of vertebrates.

Relation between monocyte to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio and prognosis in recipients after liver transplantation

Okutan, Serafettin; Saritas, Hasan; Saritas, Serdar; Bulbuloglu, Semra; Guneş, Hüseyin

Background: The end-stage liver diseases require liver transplantation as the life-saving solution. It is known that monocytes/macrophages and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC) have important contributions to the development of hepatic inflammation and oxidative stress before liver transplantation. However, the effect of monocyte/HDL-C ratio (MHR) on clinical progression and outcome in the post-transplant period are not fully understood. Our hypothesis is that the MHR value may be associated with poor vs. good outcomes after liver transplantation. Methods: In our retrospective study, we included 464 liver transplant recipients. Patients' data were extracted from electronic and other paper records in our teaching/research hospital. The MHR values and other blood parameters (creatinine, total protein, albumin, etc.) were expressed as a mean and standard deviation, which were analyzed by the Pearson correlation test. The relationship between graft dysfunction and MHR was determined by ROC curve analysis. Results: The mean age of liver transplant recipients was 45.8 ± 13.7 years. Nineteen percent of patients had liver failure due to Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (AFLD) and 34.5 % had liver failure due to hepatitis B virus. At the end of 3 months after liver transplantation, 84.5 % of liver transplant recipients were alive, 5.8 % experienced graft rejection and 5.17 % had an infection. There was a statistically significant improvement in total protein, albumin, liver function tests, and serum creatinine values of the survivors (all p < 0.05). The MHR levels were significantly higher in patients who died after transplantation in comparison to those who survived before and after liver transplantation and these differences were statistically significant (p < 0.01). Conclusion: The increased MHR values of recipients after liver transplantation correlated with their risk of survival. Furthermore, the MHR value increased with increased MELD score and the number of days of hospitalization and was not affected by gender and age. MHR was higher in patients with chronic diseases. Patients with high MHR before and after transplantation should be monitored more closely in the perioperative period.

Evaluation of the optical, structural, and morphological characteristics of a Sn-doped α-Fe2O3 thin film fabricated using RF and DC magnetron Co-sputtering technique

Salari, Maryam Abdolahpour; Şenay, Volkan; Muğlu, Günay Merhan; Sarıtaş, Sevda; Kundakçı, Mutlu

In this research, a Sn-doped hematite (α-Fe2O3) thin film on a glass substrate was synthesized using DC and RF magnetron sputtering techniques, and the physical features of the film were analyzed in detail. This study, conducted to investigate the effects of Sn doping on the hematite structure, evaluated the optical and morphological attributes of the thin film using advanced characterization techniques such as UV–VIS spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, XRD, SEM, EDS, and AFM. The optical band gap was determined from absorption measurement and calculated to be 2.12 eV. Raman spectroscopy results revealed various characteristic peaks between 100 cm−1 and 1500 cm−1. A strong (214) diffraction peak confirms the enhanced hematite phase formation in the thin film. The crystallite size of the Sn-doped thin film, calculated via Scherrer's formula, is 20 nm. SEM images showed that the thin film exhibited a smooth and homogeneous surface morphology on the glass substrate. According to the EDS results, the atomic doping ratio of Sn in Fe2O3 is 2.84 %. Additionally, AFM analysis confirmed that the Sn-doped α-Fe2O3 thin film had a smooth surface, as indicated by a low RMS (Root Mean Square) roughness value of 8.11 nm. These properties suggest that the thin film could be suitable for optoelectronic applications. The study emphasizes the potential of Sn-doped α-Fe2O3 thin films, particularly for optoelectronic and photocatalytic devices, and underscores the need for further investigation of these materials. Furthermore, it was concluded that these materials should be considered in a broader context for their potential use in various technological applications.

High-Performance Microwave-Absorbing Hemp Textile: Ni-Zn Ferrite and Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes-Infused Nanocomposite for X-Band Electromagnetic Interference Shielding

Teber, Pembe; Teber, Ahmet; Karakaş, İbrahim Hakkı

This study aims to develop a flexible and sustainable electromagnetic (EM) wave-absorbing material by using hemp fabric as a substrate incorporated with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and magnetic Ni-Zn ferrite nanoparticles (NPs). In this context, the objective is to achieve effective EM attenuation across a wide frequency range using a green, lightweight composite to meet the rising demand for ecofriendly shielding in electronic and communication systems. Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 and MWCNT composite NPs are uniformly dispersed in a molten paraffin binder and impregnated into hemp fabrics. The magnetic NPs are synthesized via the microwave-assisted combustion method. The EM parameters of the resulting structure are determined in the X-band using experimental scattering data and the Nicholson–Ross–Weir method. Absorption performance is evaluated based on varying weight ratios of magnetic NPs and MWCNTs, with an emphasis on impedance matching. The results indicate that combining dielectric and magnetic components significantly enhances absorption. A maximum reflection loss of −72.42 dB and a 3.81 GHz bandwidth (covering over 90.71% of the X-band) are achieved at 10.08 GHz. Increasing Ni-Zn content shifts the resonance to higher frequencies. This sustainable, flexible composite shows strong potential for electromagnetic interference shielding, particularly in defense applications requiring radar invisibility.

Design, Simulation, and Fabrication of High-Performance Metamaterial Absorber for EMI Mitigation and THz NDT/Imaging Applications: A Shape-Preserved GHz-to-THz Transition Approach

    Teber, Ahmet

A metamaterial absorber (MMA) designed for the 5G FR2/mmWave bands (24.25–24.45 and 24.75–25.25 GHz) is simulated with CST Studio Suite and fabricated using laser and wet etching techniques. Absorption measurements are performed using horn antennas in conjunction with a vector network analyzer (VNA). The absorber achieves >95.8% absorption under normal incidence for Mode-1, while it exceeds 90% for Mode-2 in the 24.75–25.20 GHz. The simulation results are validated through an electrical equivalent circuit model and experimental data. This absorber presents a promising solution for electromagnetic interference (EMI) reduction and shielding applications. The same structure, scaled from mm to µm without shape alteration, achieved over 90% absorption in the terahertz (THz) region (24–26 THz), particularly in the 24–25.12 THz range. The THz region, known as the “THz gap”, presents challenges due to limited THz sources and detectors. However, technologies such as THz non-destructive testing (NDT) offer potential in biomedical, communication, and defense applications. From this perspective, the high performance and scalability to µm dimensions without changing the shape of the absorber make it suitable for high-frequency EM shielding applications. This dual behavior in the GHz and THz regions offers a versatile advantage due to its varied functionality.

The significance of exopolysaccharides (EPS) in various applications has garnered increasing attention. In this study, two bacteria, Liquorilactobacillus hordei SK6 and Liquorilactobacillus mali SK26, isolated from traditional water kefir grains, produced 8.89 g/L and 7.2 g/L of homopolymeric glucan, respectively. NMR analysis revealed that both glucans were dextrans composed of (1 → 6)-linked α-d-glucose units, with (1 → 3)-linked α-d-glucose units serving as branching points, accounting for 5.3 ± 0.2% in dextran SK6 and 2.7 ± 0.15% in SK26. FTIR and XRD analyses further confirmed the amorphous nature of the dextrans, although dextran SK6 exhibited micro-arranged structures. Thermal characterization using TGA and DSC showed degradation temperatures of 298.5 °C for dextran SK6 and 282.1 °C for dextran SK26. Clear differences in morphological properties were observed using AFM and SEM. These findings provide valuable insights into dextran-producing strains and their potential applications in various industries.

The Neuronal Determinism of Freedom in Education: Conditioned Cognition, Perceived Subjectivity and the Neuroscientific Paradox

    Aksakallı, Ayhan

The paradox of education as both a space of cognitive freedom and a conditioning mechanism raises fundamental questions about intellectual autonomy. By examining the tension between neurological determinism and cognitive agency, this paper asks whether education encourages independent thought or directs individuals towards predefined ideological structures. Drawing on philosophical, psychological and neuroscientific perspectives, it explores how knowledge production, pedagogical frameworks and social conditioning shape cognition. While neuroplasticity suggests cognitive adaptability, institutionalized education often channels intellectual inquiry into rigid epistemological categories. Psychological theories emphasize how reinforcement mechanisms and implicit biases shape learning and reinforce norms rather than foster genuine intellectual emancipation. Consequently, this study argues that education needs to be restructured from being merely a means of ideological reproduction. A transformative model of education should center on critical inquiry, self-reflection and metacognitive adaptability. The hope is that education will cease to be a conditioning tool by encouraging independent thinking and become a space where individuals can critically explore and transform their cognitive worlds.
