Turan, Muhittin
In the present paper, Navier’s method based on the first-order shear deformation theory for bending analysis of two-directional functionally graded beams subjected to various sets of boundary conditions is presented. In Navier's method, different trigonometric series functions are proposed for each boundary condition. The accuracy of these proposed functions was investigated and compared with the literature. It is also presented in a parametric study. The governing equations are derived according to Lagrange’s principle. The variation of the components of the beam material in the volume is defined by a power-law rule. The normalized maximum transverse deflections, the normalized axial and transverse shear stresses are obtained for various boundary conditions, gradation exponents (px, pz) in the x- and z-directions, and the slenderness (L/h). The trigonometric series functions used in this study give results that are quite compatible with the literature. In addition, the parametric study contributes to the literature.

- MakaleYalnız künye2022Scopus SJRQ1Seismic behavior assessment of historical Alaeddin Bey Mosque and strengthening suggestions by CFRP fabric and steel plate
Şentürk, İdris; Ergün, Mustafa; Artar, Musa
In this study, the effects of different strengthening methods that can be applied for earthquake-damaged historical masonry structures on structural performance were investigated. For this purpose, the Historical Alaeddin Bey Mosque in the central district of Muş was modeled in three dimensions according to the macromodeling technique using the finite element method in the SAP2000 program. The earthquake performance of the structure was determined by considering the earthquake-acceleration records of Erzincan, Kocaeli, and Van, respectively. The maximum tensile and compressive stresses in all three directions on the structural elements were taken into account as the earthquake behavior parameters of the structure. According to the earthquake analysis made in the time domain, it was determined that the polygonal pulpit of the minaret was at risk of being damaged under the effect of the Erzincan earthquake, and it has been concluded that this region should be strengthened. The damaged area of the minaret was strengthened by the application of CFRP fabric and steel plate materials (together or separately) in five different ways, from inside and outside and at different distance intervals. The conclusions obtained as a result of the earthquake analyses on the reinforced models were examined, and it was explained in detail with the help of tables and graphics that method would be more effective in strengthening such damages.

- Kitap BölümüYalnız künye2022Discrimination in the Employment Process
Yurttas, Süleyman
Discrimination is a phenomenon that feeds on attitudes, prejudices and stereotypes, embodies itself with behaviors, and spreads to the whole of daily life. When business life and the recruitment process in particular are considered as a part of daily life, it can be said that it is “normal” to see discrimination practices here as well. Even in a very simple news search on the Internet, it is possible to see the problems experienced by individuals who are discriminated against in the recruitment process due to their age, religious belief, gender, sexual orientation, hometown or even pregnancy. This phenomenon, which is inevitably encountered in Turkey, also manifests itself in institutionalized companies. 900 thousand people are employed in the organized food retail market throughout Turkey. Employment is increasing by around 20 thousand every year (www.dunya.com). Chain stores such as A101, BIM and Sok operating in Turkey provide considerable employment in the organized food retail market. These companies, which increase their employment with their market shares, carry out their recruitment processes through regional managers. This shows that the discrimination practices that appear in recruitment have individual sources and that the attitudes, prejudices and stereotypes of the responsible person are effective. The aforementioned chain stores, which have great power in the Turkish market, increase the number employed day by day, and this situation also causes the discrimination potential to grow in the recruitment processes. Examining the recruitment processes carried out in these chain stores and revealing the discrimination practices will be beneficial in terms of both identifying the existing problems and taking the necessary measures to prevent discrimination. The aim of this study is to reveal the discrimination practices seen in the recruitment processes in chain stores. In the research, semi-structured interviews were conducted with the regional managers who are responsible for recruitment in the relevant chain store markets. In addition, the relevant literature has been included in order to reveal the relationship between recruitment processes and discrimination, and information about the recruitment processes of chain stores has been shared.
- MakaleYalnız künye2022Scopus SJRQ3Optimization of asymmetric reduction conditions of 2-bromo-1-(naphthalen-2-yl)ethanone by Enterococcus faecium BY48 biocatalyst with A-optimal design-embedded model
Özdemir, Akın; Şahin, Engin
Aromatic α-halohydrins, especially 2-haloethanols, which are a common pharmacological precursor, may be readily transformed to chiral β-adrenergic receptor blockers. Studies including the synthesis of (S)-2-bromo-1-(naphthalen-2-yl)ethanol ((S)-2), an α-halohydrin, in high conversion, enantiomeric excess (ee), and yield by biocatalytic asymmetric reduction of 2-bromo-1-(naphthalen-2-yl)ethanone (1) are still insufficient. Moreover, asymmetric reduction of substrate 1 using a mathematical optimization method is not explored in the current literature. In this article, the four asymmetric bioreduction conditions, which are (1) pH, (2) temperature, (3) incubation period, and (4) agitation speed, of substrate 1 were optimized to obtain (S)-2 with A-optimal design-embedded model in the presence of Enterococcus faecium BY48. Optimum bioreduction conditions were determined by the A-optimal design-embedded model as follows: pH = 7, temperature = 25°C, incubation period = 24 h, and agitation speed = 200 rpm. And then, it was suggested that (S)-2 could be obtained with 98.88% ee and 100% conversion rate (cr) under these optimum conditions. As a result of the experimental reaction performed under the optimization conditions suggested by the model, (S)-2 was obtained with 99% ee and 100% cr. The study revealed that E. faecium BY48 could be used as a biocatalyst in asymmetric reduction reactions. Also, the A-optimal design-embedded model could have the great potential to obtain the optimum asymmetric bioreduction conditions.

Göçoğlu, Volkan; Şengün, Hayriye
The COVID-19 pandemic started in Wuhan, China, and spread to almost all over the world in four months. As pandemic cases began to be detected and increased in countries, governments have started to pursue various policies such as closing the city and country borders, social distance practices, the prohibition of going out, and creating herd immunity. Especially with the closure measures implemented, the countries’ financial systems have been adversely affected, and many sectors have suffered losses. On the other hand, the provision of public services in countries has become more complex. Therefore, countries have taken several measures to maintain their public services without interruption. Legal services are one of the essential services affected by this situation. This study deals with the general, financial and legal measures that Turkey has adopted to combat against COVID-19 pandemic. As a result of the study, while the functional features that stand out in the measures are presented, some suggestions are made for a better crisis management.
- MakaleYalnız künye2022Scopus SJRQ1Changes of some bioactive and physicochemical properties during the black tea processing
Balaban, Osman Tolga; Kamiloğlu, Aybike; Kara, Hasan Hüseyin
Abstract: In this research, some physical and bioactive properties of tea samples collected from every processing stage of black tea production were investigated. The processing stages were significantly effective on the investigated properties (moisture content, color parameters [L*, a*, and b*], and pH values the total phenolic substance, antioxidant activity) (p < 0.01). The antioxidant activities were found to be at a high level in fresh tea but decreased during the processing stages. Furthermore, the lowest activity was observed in the drying stage for extracts prepared with water and in the drying and sorting stages for extracts prepared with ethanol. In addition, it was determined that palmitic acid, myristic acid, and capric acid as saturated fatty acids, oleic acid, heptadecenoic acid, and eicosenoic acid as unsaturated fatty acids formed the fatty acid profile. Palmitic acid was determined to be the dominant fatty acid in tea samples. Practical Application: Tea is a beverage known to have positive health effects. The chemical structure of tea is very effective in providing these positive effects on health. Black tea production takes place in five stages in general terms (withering, rolling, oxidation, drying, and sorting stages) after the harvesting. These processes are very effective in the quality properties of tea. This research provides information about effects of processing stages on black tea. Our results demonstrate that processing was significantly effective on the physicochemical and bioactive properties of tea. Functionality of bioactive compounds could be maintained by optimization of the applied processes.

TABATA protocol is considered to be one of the most effective strategies among high-intensity interval training (HIIT) methods. A limited number of studies have compared the chronic effects of cycling-based and calistenic HIIT in TABATA-type. The aim of this study was to compare the chronic effects of a 8-week TABATA-type calisthenic high-intensity interval and high-intensity interval in cycling on aerobic endurance, sprint and maximal strength performance in sedentary men. 17 sedentary males participated in our study. Participants were randomly divided into calisthenic HIIT (n=9) and cycling HIIT (n=8) groups. Training groups were given 3-sessions of exercise per week on non-consecutive days for 8 weeks. Before and after the 8-week training, the body mass, body mass index, fat percentage, 30-m sprint, 1-repetition maximal strength, aerobic power and critical power levels of the participants were determined. No statistically significant different was observed in body mass (p=0.917), body mass index (p=0.928), and body fat ratio (p=0.980) in both training groups. However, both training groups achieved statistically significant improvements in peak power output (p=0.017), maximal oxygen consumption (p=0.040) and critical power (p=0.048), and there was no significant difference in the level of improvement between the groups (p>0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in 1 repetition maximal strength and sprint values of both training groups (p<0.05). TABATA type HIIT performed calistenic provides chronic effects similar to that of interval cycling form.

Çolak, Murat; Arslan, İbrahim
The aim of this study is to improve the tribological behaviour of aluminium alloys by using grain refiner and modifier. The effects of Al5Ti1B grain refiner and Al10Sr modifier additives on friction and wear properties on A380, A357 alloys produced by pouring sand andpermanent mould casting were investigated. Abrasion tests were carried out under dry conditions against St1040 steel disc using a pin-disk system with 20 N load and 1.0 m/s sliding speed. It was determined that grain refiner and modifier additives decrease the friction coefficient and increase the wear resistance. It was determined that the samples produced by permanent mould casting method decreased the friction resistance by 9% and the abrasion resistance increased by 40% compared to the samples produced in sand mould. The lowest wear rate was obtained in A380 alloy with TiB and Sr added with a value of 4.87 × 10–11 m2/N.

Şakar, E.; Özpolat, Ö.F.; Alım, B.; Alsaif, Norah A.M.; Rammah, Y.S.
The main high energy radiation-matter interaction parameters of the 30B2O3-(70-x)TeO2-xBi2O3, where x = 40, 50, 60 and 70 mol% (BTB) glasses have been studied in the wide energy range. The theoretical calculations were made for some special X and γ-ray energies emitted from Fe (55), Am (241), Cs (137) and Co (60) radioactive sources for photon energies in the range of 15 keV - 15 MeV. All evaluated radiation shielding parameters were compared with some selected concretes (Ordinary concrete (OC), Hematite-Serpenite (HS) and Basalt-Magnetide (BM)), and glasses (Te and Pb based). The BTB- glasses have higher mass attenuation coefficient (MAC) values than other glasses (Te and Pb based) and concretes (OC, HS, and BM). The half value layer (HVL) of the investigated BTB-glasses has the following trend: OC > HS > BM > Te-Glass > Pb-glass > BTB40 > BTB50 > BTB60 > BTB70. In terms of mean free path (MFP), the BTB70 coded glass has the lowest MFP values due to the highest Bi2O3 content. In terms of the Zeff values of BTB coded glasses vary between 70 and 75 at the lowest energy level. The effective atomic number (Zeff) values in this energy region were 48.974 and 63.102 for Te and Pb glasses, respectively, and 13,339, 15.520 and 15.894 for OC, HS and BM concretes. The BTB-coded glasses have lower exposure buildup factor (EBF) than all other glass and concrete up to 3 MeV photon energies. The energy absorption buildup factor (EABF) values range from 1 to 4.2 for all samples at 1 MFP and at 40 MFP values, it reaches 108 for BTB coded glasses and 1010 for Te-based glass. Results confirmed that BTB- glasses, especially BTB70 glass sample can be used in applications requiring radiation safety.

Karabulut Uzuncakmak, S.; Dirican, E.; Naldan, M.E.; Kesmez Can, F.; Halıcı, Z.
Background: COVID-19 pandemic spread around the world like an infectious disease that presents waved effects on patients. Some patients needed ICU and respiratory support. Some patients only had flu-like symptoms. Cytokine storm and elevated ROS were serious problems for treatment. Apoptotic genes and CYP Family are part of these mechanisms. Aim: In this study, our aim was to examine the gene expression CYP2E1 and Caspase-3 in patients with COVID-19 infection. Method: 60 COVID-19(+) patients (ICU and non-ICU patients) and 30 healthy volunteers were enrolled to study. To measure the level of gene expression qPCR was used. The 2-ΔΔCt method was utilized to analyze gene expression. Results: The expression of CYP2E1 and Caspase-3 genes showed a significant discrepancy between patients and healthy individuals. Caspase-3 expression increased (p=0,0041) but CYP2E1 expression decreased (p=0,0214) in COVID-19 patients compared to healthy individuals. Both levels of gene expression were lower in patients with affected lungs than patients with unaffected lungs (p<0,05). Laboratory findings including d-Dimer, LDH, platelet count, lymphocyte count were related to both gene expressions (p<0,05). We found no correlation between CYP2E1 and Caspase-3 expressions. Conclusion: The expression of Caspase-3 demonstrated apoptotic situations of patients but was not related to the CYP2E1 expression level. CYP2E1 gene expression is an important actor to metabolize endogens and xenobiotics however, COVID-19 patients demonstrated decreased CYP2E1 expression. CYP2E1 and Caspase-3 gene expression levels may be used as a diagnostic tool for COVID-19 patients.

- MakaleYalnız künye2022Scopus SJRQ4Analysing the potential of transport triggered architecture for lattice-based cryptography algorithms
Akçay, Latif; Yalçın, Berna Örs
Lattice-based structures offer numerous possibilities for post-quantum cryptography. Recently, many post-quantum cryptography algorithms have been built on hard lattice problems. The three of the remaining four algorithms in the final round of the NIST Standardization Process rely on lattice-based methods. However, suitable processor architectures for these algorithms have not been sufficiently investigated. This study examines the potential advantages of transport triggered architecture for these algorithms. We compare popular 64-bit RISC-V processors with our conceptual transport triggered architecture processor over reference software implementations. Our processor provides better results than RISC-V competitors, regardless of the algorithm. It seems to be up to 3× faster, 1.6×–2× smaller, and consumes 1.3×–3.6× less energy than the compared RISC-V cores. Thus, an alternative base architecture is proposed for post-quantum cryptography processor development for embedded systems. The most critical shortcoming of the proposed architecture is the lack of compatible intellectual property core support for system-on-chip designs. We share comparative analyses with test results for different core configurations.

The utilization of ultrasonication in the preparation of polymeric nano/microparticles has attracted vast attention due to its simplicity with low cost and high energy efficiency. The occurrence of acoustic cavitation generated by the ultrasonication process can enhance droplet disintegration, allowing the improved stability of emulsions. In this study, eumelanin-loaded nano/microparticles were prepared by employing polylactide stereocomplex (sc-PLA) formed by blending of poly(D-lactide-caprolactone-D-lactide), P(DLA-b-CL-b-DLA), triblock copolymer with linear poly(L-lactide), PLLA. The particles were prepared through an oil in water emulsion (O/W) technique followed by a solvent evaporation. The effect of ultrasonication on the encapsulation efficiency and physicochemical properties of the nano/microparticles was evaluated. The results showed that ultrasonication treatment could control nano/microparticles' shape, size, and size distribution, which enhanced the particle stability and the entrapment efficiency of eumelanin. Particle size distribution of ultrasound-assisted nano/microparticles was in a range of 0.38–135 μm, while those without ultrasonication had a broader distribution from 0.38–153 μm. Higher zeta potential was also observed in the ultrasound-assisted nano/microparticles, reflecting their higher suspension stability. The ultrasonication treatment led to higher eumelanin encapsulation efficiency (46.6%) with higher thermal stability and crystallinity, promoted by the formation of higher contents of the stereocomplex crystallites. The results confirm that ultrasonicate-assisted emulsification can be effectively used to fabricate the functional eumelanin-loaded nano/microparticles.

- Kitap BölümüYalnız künye2022Non-Family Managers and HR Practices of Family Firms
Yazici, Ömer
Family firms have one special factor that makes them unique and competitive compared to non-family firms, and that is family involvement. Family firms are composed of management, family, and ownership. While this composition often has many advantages, it also has some downfalls. Family involvement has a significant impact on the behavior of the company, more specifically on the human resource (HR) management practices of the company. As a result, family firms have to deal with nepotism, self-dealing, and entrenched management issues to hire and retain professional non-family managers and other white-collar workers. Family firms are intended to be the career center for family employees (Bloemen-Bekx et al. 2019). Therefore, family firms have different HR compositions. There are mainly three types of employees in family firms; first, the shareholder family members and their heir (ownership), second, the other family members and relatives (family), and third, the non-family employees (management). Non-family employees are divided into two categories, managers and workers. Although family firms have a tendency to assign family members to crucial positions at the firm (Deloitte and Touche Study 1999), non-family employees are hired for other executive and managerial positions, which is more crucial for family firms (Chua et al. 2003). Considering all these challenges and difficulties due to family involvement in employee relations, researchers raise the question of whether “family firms are good employers” (Neckebrouck et al. 2018). Family firms diverge from non-family firms with their long-term orientation and caring approach to their employees. This caring approach is proven in downsizing studies. Researchers show that during crises and downsizing practices, family firms lay off fewer employees than non-family firms (Stavrou et al. 2007). Non-family employees are keystones of the family firm’s growth and necessary for each growing family firm. Therefore, the employment of non-family members will affect the sustainability of the firm. While it is important for all types of companies, it is crucial for family firms to have committed and devoted non-family employees. Hiring non-family managers is usually a result of a limited family employee presence during the growth of the company. Controlling growth due to a limited family member presence and running a firm with only family managers would result in informal structures, peculiar culture, and limited growth. Non-family managers are sometimes hired as conflict resolution when there is a conflict of interest during the employment of family members (Lubatkin et al. 2005). Hence mostly non-family managers are hired if there is a formalization process in progress (Zhang and Ma 2009). Also, most first non-family managers in the firm are CEOs. Furthermore, family firms with financial struggles tend to employ a non-family CEO rather than a family CEO (Bocatto et al. 2010). According to a study done with Italian firms, family firms prefer to nominate non-family CEOs rather than family CEOs (Salvato et al. 2012). Additionally, in growth times, family firms also prefer non-family CEOs over family CEOs. In conclusion, while family firms are able to fill managerial positions, it is empirically shown that the growth of family firms is correlated with non-family managers (Fang et al. 2015).
- BildiriYalnız künye2022SpectrumChain: An Efficient Spectrum Management Framework in Blockchain-Enabled Flexible SDONs
Guler, Evrim; Karakus, Murat; Uludag, Suleyman
Huge potentials of optical networks provide an excellent choice in meeting the exponential growth in bandwidth demand. In particular, Elastic Optical Networks (EONs), with its promising potentials in increased availability, failure resilience, load-balancing, new use cases for on-demand opportunities, and efficient resource allocations, are good candidates for the future high-speed networks. When EONs are augmented with the emerging Software Defined Networking (SDN), that decouples the data and control planes, an agile and synergistic combination emerges under a general term of SDN-based optical networking (SDON), albeit with operational challenges. In this paper, we introduce a blockchain-enabled QoS-based inter-Internet Service Provider (ISP) routing coordination framework for SDONs, SpectrumChain (SC), to eliminate centralized mediators and reduce QoS signaling overhead. Experimental results show that the SC framework can effectively handle the QoS-enabled inter-ISP routing in SDON architecture in terms of flow setup time, message overhead, and requests serviced as compared to the traditional approaches.

Ozden, Erdemalp; Guleryuz, Didem
In Economic Development, human capital was previously seen as production factors but gradually evolved into endogenous growth theories. Most of the previous studies have examined the relationships between economic development and human capital via econometric models. Since this relationship is usually nonlinear and machine learning (ML) models can resolve it better, this study investigates the relationships by employing ML methods to provide a new perspective. For this purpose, the optimized ML methods, namely Bayesian Tuned Support Vector Machine and Bayesian Tuned Gaussian Process Regression (BT-GPR), were performed to develop the prediction model for economic development. The hyperparameters have been optimized with the Bayes method by using different kernel functions to increase SVM and GPR methods' predictive performance. The Multiple Linear Regression model has been employed to make a comparison as an econometric model. The performance of the models is evaluated using three statistical metrics, namely, the root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and coefficient of determination (R2). The BT-GPR with the exponential kernel model has superior prediction ability with the highest accuracy (R2: 0.9727, RMSE: 0.4022, MAE: 0.3728 in the testing phase). The study shows that the BT-GPR model increases the accuracy of R2 6.4%, RMSE 10.7%, and MAE 1% compared with other developed models.

Salvia species showed sensitivity with a zone diameter of 12–16 mm. Concentrations of 0.5 mg/ml to 16 mg/ml by the dilution method were used to determine the Minimum inhibited concentration (MIC) and Minimum bactericidal concentration (MBK). The MIC values of the plants are mostly 0.5 mg/ml - 4 mg/ml and MBC values are between 0.5 mg/ml - 8 mg/ml. Antifungal activity findings are remarkable on the species and it has been observed to have very high effects especially on Candida parapsilosis. When the antioxidant research findings are examined; It was observed that Salvia marashica and Salvia caespitosa plants have approximately 75% antioxidant activity at 1 mg/ml, and findings mostly directly proportional between concentrations and antioxidant activity capacity were recorded. MCF-7 and HUVEC cell lines were used to investigate anticancer activity properties. In line with the findings, while the IC50 value of Salvia marashica on the MCF-7 Cell line was 0.125 mg/ml, it was 1.65 mg/ml in the HUVEC cell line, while the IC50 value of Salvia caespitosa on the MCF-7 Cell line was 0.115 mg/ml in the HUVEC Cell line. It was found to be 9.87 mg/ml. It has been proven that both Salvia species have a cytotoxic effect on the MCF-7 Cell line.
