Sayyed, M.I.; Abdalsalam, Alyaa H.; Taki, Malaa M.; Mhareb, M.H.A.; Alim, Bünyamin; Baltakesmez, Ali; Şakar, Erdem
Structural, Morphological and neutron attenuation properties of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) reinforced with molybdenum trioxide composite material obtained by solid state mixing of pellets and powder components via hot pressing have been studied. In this work, Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene and MoO3 has been utilized with different concentration using a hot compression iron mold. The changes in the microstructure of the prepared polymer and its particulate composites were evaluated by SEM. In order to investigate the quantitative of all elements used in these samples, we utilized Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) to present the profiles of synthesized samples which show a clear peaks C (carbon), and Mo (Molybdenum). The X-ray diffraction of all samples was examined to study the modification of the phase and lattice for UHMWPE before and after the addition of molybdenum trioxide (MoO3). Raman analysis was utilized to explore the crystallinity, molecular interactions, phase, polymorphy, and chemical structure. This technique is based on non-destructive interaction between light with the chemical bonds inside a material. The Raman spectrum for the current work presented within the range of 150–1600 cm−1. In order to understand the neutron shielding performance for the fabricated UHMWPE with different concentrations of MoO3, 241Am/Be fast neutron source was used to determine the fast neutron radiation equivalent dose rate. The background absorbed dose rate was measured as 0.98 (±0.017) (μSv/h). It was seen that the addition of MoO3 into the UHMWPE enhances the neutron shielding. The dose released from the source was absorbed by 7.71 (±1.3) %, 18.48 (±2.9) %, 22.26 (±2.4) %, 24.07 (±1.8) % and 26.17 (±1.3) % from UHMWPE with 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5% of MoO3 respectively. Additionally, GEANT4 10.02. p01 version was used to calculate total macroscopic cross-sections (TMCS) for the MoO3 doped UHMWPE. According to the results obtained from GEANT4, it was observed that the TMCS values of the UHMWPE increase with increment of the mole fraction of the MoO3 in the structure of UHMWPE examined and that the 5.0% MoO3 sample has the best neutron shielding ability.”

Dinler, Burcu Seckin; Gul, Volkan
The present study was conducted to determine the effects of gibberellic acid (GA3) presoaking of soybean (Glycine max L.) seeds on the biomass yield, regulation of reactive oxygen species and some antioxidant enzyme activities in radicle, hypocotyl and cotyledons under salinity. Within this scope, the seeds were subjected to priming with 150 ppm GA3 for 6 h at room temperature. Then, 150 mM NaCl was added in a group and the control was not primed with GA3. The results clearly revealed that salt stress caused a slight induction of biomass yield of radicle and hypocotyl, photosynthetic pigments in cotyledon, reactive oxygen species content in all organs. Moreover, GA3 pretreatment alleviated salt-induced oxidative damage by maintaining superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase and glutathione reductase enzyme activities in soybean plants. This study firstly elucidates the effects of GA3 priming on the comparative response mechanisms to salinity with different organs of soybean plants.

- MakaleYalnız künye2020Scopus SJRQ2Effects of processing methods and extraction solvents on the chemical content and bioactive properties of propolis
Ecem Bayram, Nesrin; Gerçek, Yusuf Can; Bayram, Sinan; Toğar, Başak
The aim of this study was to evaluate the bioactive properties of propolis extract prepared using different solvents and different extraction methods. The extracts were analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and the differences between their antibacterial activities were evaluated by disc diffusion method. At the same time, bioactive properties of different concentrations of propolis extracts were investigated on human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). The proliferative effects and cytotoxic effects of the extracts were determined by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) analyzes, respectively. Total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and total oxidative status (TOS) parameters were used in assessing biochemical effects in the HUVEC cell line. The DNA damage was also analyzed by 8-oxo-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) level as indicators of genotoxicity. As a result of the MTT analysis conducted within the scope of the present study, the extracts tested were sorted as 95% ethanol extract of propolis (PEE95) > ultrasonic ethanol extract of propolis (PUEE) > 50% ethanol extract of propolis (PEE50) > ultrasonic water extract of propolis (PUWE) in terms of the effectiveness of their cell viabilities. It was observed that high concentrations of PEE95 induced LDH release. In addition to this, our findings have shown that PEE50, PUEE and PUWE increased oxidative stress at high concentrations. According to 8-OH-dG analysis, all tested extracts were found to be non-genotoxic. The results obtained from antibacterial activity and minimum inhibition concentration tests showed that PUEE and PEE95 had stronger antibacterial effects than PEE50 and PUWE. All these results indicated that propolis has beneficial effects for human health and therefore it is a valuable product which can be used as a food supplement.

- MakaleYalnız künye2020Scopus SJRQ2Strategy development for the turkish ready-made garment sector using swot analysis – fuzzy topsis method
Ozbek, Ahmet; Pabuccu, Hakan; Esmer, Yusuf
The aim of this study was to integrate SWOT analysis and the fuzzy TOPSIS method to develop a strategy for the Turkish RMG sector. SWOT analysis was used to determine the strengths &weaknesses and opportunities & threats of the sector. New strategies were developed using SWOT analysis data, and then the fuzzy TOPSIS method was used to rank the strategies for the sector. Four strategies were determined: (1) building global brands, (2) providing government incentives to increase the competitive power of the sector, (3) effective use of e-commerce, and (4) transforming the sector into an attractive business area for young people. Empirical results indicate that the third strategy is ideal for the sector. However, SWOT analysis falls short of determining strategies for any sector. The ability of strategy making processes to yield positive outcomes depends largely on managers’ participation in decision-making processes. Fuzzy TOPSIS was used to model the inherent uncertainty in human knowledge and behaviour and to incorporate sector managers’ views into the system to assess alternatives that integrate SWOT.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2020Scopus SJRQ3The impact of dietary tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus) on serum apelin, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, cardiac troponin concentrations and histopathology of liver tissue in laying hens housed at different stocking densities
Bayraktar, Bulent; Tekce, Emre; Kaya, Hacer; Karaalp, Musa; Turunc, Eylul
Due to its association with several other stress factors (poultry house gases, inadequate ventilation, heat, cold and poor hygiene), the high stocking density is a major stress factor that adversely affects the health and performance of poultry and the quality of the poultry products. Therefore, this experimental study was aimed at analysing the impact of different doses of dietary tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus) on the serum apelin, plasma brain-derived neurotrophic factor (p-BDNF), and cardiac troponin I (cTnI) concentrations, and the correlation between these indicators in laying hens housed at different stocking densities. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of adding tarragon in different ratios to laying hen rations in the 2ndovulation period on the cTnI, apelin, and BDNF hormone concentrations and the liver histopathology. The experiment was carried out over a period of eight weeks, with 192 Lohman Brown commercial hybrids at 50 weeks of age. Eight groups (four replicates each), composed of laying hens of equal body weight, which were housed at stocking densities of 580 cm2/hen and 810 cm2/hen and received 0, 1, 5 and 10 mmol/kg of tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus) in the feed, were established. At the end of the trial, 96 of the housed egg-laying hens (3 birds in each subgroup, a total of 12 birds in each group) were randomly selected and blood samples were taken from the vena subcutanea ulnaris. The samples collected were analysed for the apelin, p-BDNF, and cTnI contents. The analysis results demonstrated that tarragon supplementation had no effect on the serum apelin, p-BDNF and cTnI concentrations (P > 0.05). The Sub-Groups ST1, ST1.2, and ST6 presented with severe hyperaemia of the sinusoidal, portal and acinar blood vessels, whilst the hyperaemia of these blood vessels was moderate in Sub-Group ST12. Apelin, BDNF, and cTnI can act as protective factors against negative consequences of stress (e.g., stocking density or heat stress).

- MakaleAçık Erişim2020Scopus SJRQ3Model-based dynamic fractional-order sliding mode controller design for performance analysis and control of a coupled tank liquid-level system
Sekban, Hayriye Tugba; Can, Kaan; Basci, Abdullah
In this paper, a model-based dynamic fractionalorder sliding mode controller (FOSMC) is designed and implemented to a coupled tank experimental setup for controlling the liquid level. First, a model-based dynamic sliding-mode controller is designed by using the dynamic equations of a vertically positioned coupled tank system. Then, the sliding surface of the sliding-mode controller is defined in fractional order so that the designed controller can make better water level tracking. The liquid level control of the system is realized in two different steps. In the first step, the water level of the upper tank is controlled by a pump and in this application the bottom tank is not considered. In the second step, the water level of the bottom tank is controlled with upper tank's output water. In addition, a model-based dynamic sliding mode controller (SMC) is also applied to the system to show the performance of the proposed controller in terms of robustness to disturbances, reference tracking and error elimination capability. Experimental results show that the proposed controller reduces the reference tracking error by 3.68% and 10.17% for the upper tank and 17.07% for the bottom tank when compared to the SMC, and the control signal contains more chattering than the SMC.

Kaymak, Nuriye; Bayram, Ozkan; Tataroğlu, Adem; Bilge Ocak, Sema; Oz Orhan, Elif
The electrical properties of the fabricated Al/Gr/Al2O3/p-Si structure have been analyzed using frequency-dependent capacitance/conductance–voltage (C/G–V) measurements. Graphene (Gr) nanosheets were grown on to copper (Cu) catalyst substrate, which has 99.99% purity, by Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) technique, and then the Graphene was transferred on Al2O3/p-Si by the standard transfer process. The Graphene structures have been characterized by Raman Spectroscopy and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) analyses, and the results of both analyses confirmed the monolayer/bilayer Graphene nanostructure. The forward and reverse bias G–V and C–V measurements of this structure have been performed in 10 kHz–400 kHz and at 300 K. The frequency dispersion in C and G can be evaluated for interface state density (Dit) and series resistance (Rs) values. The values of Dit and Rs are dependent on frequency and increase with decreasing frequency. The Rs- V graph shows a peak form at all frequencies in the depletion region and vanishes with increasing frequency. The obtained results suggest that the prepared structure can be used in electronic device applications.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2020APPLICATION OF VARIATION OF THE PARAMETERS METHOD FOR MICROPOLAR FLOW IN A POROUS CHANNEL
Güngör, Osman; Arslantürk, Cihat
This work devoted to study the injective micropolar flow in a porous channel. The flow is driven by suction or injection on the channel walls, and the micropolar model is used to characterize the working fluid. The governing nonlinear partial differential equations are reduced to the nonlinear ordinary coupled differential equations by using Ber-man’s similarity transformation. These equations are solved for large mass transfer via variation of parameters method (VPM) which has been used effectively in the solution of nonlinear equations recently. This method has not previously been applied to a problem of micropolar flow. The results of the variation of parameters method are found to be in excellent agreement with the results of the Matlab bvp4c solver (NUM). With this validity, the effects of the some important parameters on the velocity and rotation profile of micropolar flow are discussed in detail. It can be seen that increases in the values N1 and N3have different results in comparison with N2 increasing.

Breast cancer (BCa) is one of the most prevalent cancer amongst women and PIK3CA mutations have a crucial role in carcinogenesis. On the other hand, Octamer-Binding Transcription Factor 4 (OCT-4) is common biomarkers of cancer stem cells, which provide to the pathological processes of numerous carcinomas. In this study, we evaluated the association of OCT-4 gene expression levels with the PIK3CA mutation in BCa patients. The mRNA expression level of the OCT-4 gene was detected by qPCR in 44 BCa patients and 30 BCa patients control have positive PIK3CA mutations. Exon 9 and exon 20 of PIK3CA mutations were identified by sequencing. OCT-4 gene expression and PIK3CA mutations were also clinically evaluated in BCa patients. The frequency of PIK3CA mutation in 44 new cases were 32%. PIK3CA mutations were significantly associated with HER2-positive (p = 0.0271) status, Ki-67 status (p = 0.0434) and patient age (p = 0.0149). OCT-4 mRNA expression was significantly higher in the BCa tissue in comparison to normal breast tissue (p = 0.0305). A significant correlation was found between expression of OCT-4 and node status (p = 0.0190). OCT-4 mRNA expression was higher in the PIK3CA mutation tissue than the wild type tissue. However, no association was found between the expression of OCT-4 and the PIK3CA mutation or wild type samples (p = 0.7908). Our results provided that OCT-4 gene and PIK3CA mutations may have a role in development of BCa. OCT-4 mRNA expression level and PIK3CA mutations have a potential important for BCa diagnosis or treatment.

- MakaleYalnız künye2020Scopus SJRQ2The relationship between housing prices and inflation rate in Turkey: Evidence from panel Konya causality test
Korkmaz, Özge
Purpose: Human beings need shelter as the beginning of their existence. Same holds true for people who live in Turkey as it is a cultural and traditional reason to be the host and endeavor to buy a home even if one has to pay the debt for years. Another factor that is important for individuals and even for countries is the inflation rate. In this context, the purpose of this study is to investigate whether the 26 regions of Turkey are affected by the inflationary pressure, specifically in the housing price index (HPI). Design/methodology/approach: For this purpose, data from 2010:01 to 2019:01 and the consumer price index (CPI), as well as HPI have been used. The causal relationship between the variables is analyzed by Konya Causality (2006) test. Findings: The key results suggest that HPI causes inflationary pressures in some regions. Research limitations/implications: The study has some limitations in terms of data set and scope. These are as follows: although there are many variables affecting housing prices, this study aims to investigate the causal link between inflation and housing prices. In addition, only the CPI and HPI variables were provided on a monthly basis in the 2010-2019 period for 26 regions due to the aim of making regional propositions in the investigation of this relationship. For these reasons, different macroeconomic variables could not be studied. Originality/value: This study makes the following contribution to the literature. While the majority of existing literature investigates the relationship between housing prices and inflation from an empirical perspective for country, very few studies have been for the sub-regions and also these studies have focused on only some sub-regions. In other words, in the literature review, a study has observed that Turkey has to examine the relationship between the housing price and inflation variables for all sub-regions in particular. To overcome this deficiency in the literature, this study aims to investigate the relationship between housing price and inflation for 26 regions.

This research presents the influence of pyrene (C16H10) addition (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 wt%) on the superconducting properties of bulk MgB2. For C16H10 added MgB2 samples, a shrinkage in a-lattice parameters was determined, whereas c-lattice parameters remained practically unchanged. The (1 1 0) peak observed at 2θ ≈ 59.9◦ slightly shifted to higher angles, the lattice strain increased and the crystallite size reduced after C16H10 addition. By virtue of induced stronger pinning force, the in-field critical current density (Jc) increased after C16H10 addition. The Jc value at 20 K and 4 T was obtained about two times higher (8.54 × 103 A/cm2) for 4 wt% C16H10 added MgB2 sample than that of the pure one. In addition, the variation of levitation force characteristic of MgB2 with increasing C16H10 content was determined at 20, 25 and 30 K. The best vertical levitation force performance in zero-field-cooled regime was obtained as 7.09 N/g at 20 K for 4 wt% C16H10 added MgB2 sample with 13 mm in diameter.

Kaya, Halil İbrahim; Şimşek, Ömer
Tarhana is a traditional cereal product fermented by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and yeast strains that has gained special interest recently as an infant nutrition. Tarhana contains wheat flour, yogurt, and various vegetables that might create a microbiological toxicological risk, especially for Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus. In this study, characterization of the metabolites responsible for antibacterial activity of Pediococcus acidilactici PFC69 and Lactococcus lactis PFC77 strains obtained from tarhana was performed, and antibacterial effects were detected against B. cereus ATCC 11778 and S. aureus ATCC 29213 during the fermentation. A total of 12,800 AU/mL antibacterial activity was observed for the supernatants of the PFC69 and PFC77 strains that were found to be stable at high temperature and in low pH conditions and sensitive to proteases, suggesting the antimicrobial metabolite is a bacteriocin. These bacteriocins were further purified and their molecular sizes were determined as 4.5 and 3.5 kDa, respectively. Importantly, inoculation of PFC69 and PFC77 to tarhana dough significantly decreased B. cereus ATCC 11778 and S. aureus ATCC 29213 amounts from the fifth day of fermentation compared to the control dough samples. P. acidilactici PFC69 and L. lactis PFC77 strains were concluded as bioprotective cultures for tarhana and these strains were offered for other cereal-based fermentations.

Aromatic α-halohydrins, particularly 2-haloethanols as significant precursor of drugs, can easily be converted to chiral β-adrenergic receptor blockers. Eight strains of Lactobacillus curvatus were tested as biocatalysts for asymmetric reduction of 2-bromo-1-(naphthalen-2-yl)ethanone 1 to 2-bromo-1- (naphthalen-2-yl) ethanol 2. The parameters of the bioreduction were optimized using L. curvatus N4, the best biocatalyst found. As a result, (R)-2-bromo-1-(naphthalen-2-yl)ethanol 2, which can be β-adrenergic receptor blocker precursor, was produced for the first time in high yield and enantiomerically pure form using biocatalysts. Moreover, the gram scale synthesis was performed and 7.54 g of (R)-2 was synthesized as enantiopure form (enantiomeric excess >99%) in 48 h. The important advantages of this process are that it produces of (R)-2 for the first time in enantiopure form, in excellent yield and under environmentally friendly and moderate reaction conditions. This system is of the potential to be applied at a commercial scale.

The present study's main purpose is to determine the current-voltage (I–V) performance of Graphene (Gr) based hetero nanostructure produced on Al2O3/p-Si. Graphene synthesis was carried out using the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique on Copper (Cu) foils used as a metal catalyst and transferred onto Al2O3/p-Si using the conventional transfer method. The I–V characteristics of this structure were measured in the dark environment, and the electrical properties of the Gr/Si structure were characterized at room temperature. The rectifying ratio (RR) of the structure was found to be about 103 at ± 3 V. The electrical properties of ideality factor (n), series resistance (Rs), and barrier height (Φb) were examined by using the theory of Thermionic Emission (TE), Norde's method, and Cheung's method. The values of Φb, which were calculated using Norde's method, Cheung's method, and the theory of thermionic emission (TE), were found to be 0.69 eV, 0.71 eV, and 0.68 eV, respectively. The ideality factor was found to be approximately 3.89 according to the theory of TE. The values of series resistance were also determined using the Norde's method and Cheung's two different parameters (dV/dln(I) and H(I)) found to be 9.60 kΩ, 9.12 kΩ, and 5.94 kΩ, respectively.

- MakaleYalnız künye2020Scopus SJRQ2Phy-X/ZeXTRa: a software for robust calculation of effective atomic numbers for photon, electron, proton, alpha particle, and carbon ion interactions
Özpolat, Ö.F.; Alım, B.; Şakar, E.; Büyükyıldız, M.; Kurudirek, M.
The purpose of the present work is robust calculation of effective atomic numbers (Zeffs) for photon, electron, proton, alpha particle and carbon ion interactions through the newly developed software, Phy-X/ZeXTRa (Zeff of materials for X-Type Radiation attenuation). A pool of total mass attenuation and energy absorption coefficients (for photons) and total mass stopping powers (for charged particles) for elements was constructed first. Then, a matrix of interaction cross sections for elements Z = 1–92 was constructed. Finally, effective atomic numbers were calculated for any material by interpolating adjacent cross sections through a linear logarithmic interpolation formula. The results for Zeff for photon interaction were compared with those calculated through Mayneord’s formula, which suggests a single-valued Zeff for any material for low-energy photons for which photoelectric absorption is the dominant interaction process. The single-valued Zeff was found to agree well with that obtained by other methods, in the low-energy region. In addition, Zeff values of various materials of biological interest were compared with those obtained experimentally at 59.54 keV. In general, the agreement between values calculated with Phy-X/ZeXTRa and Auto-Zeff and those measured were satisfactory. A comparison of Zeff values for photon energy absorption calculated with Phy-X/ZeXTRa and literature values for a nucleotide base, adenine, was made, and the relative difference (RD) in Zeff between Phy-X/ZeXTRa and literature values was found to be 2% < RD < 11%, at low photon energies (1–100 keV), while it was less than 1% at energies higher than 100 keV. Highest Zeff values were observed at low photon energies, where photoelectric absorption dominates photon interaction. For electrons, corresponding RD(%) values in Zeff were found to be in the range 0.4 ≤ RD(%) ≤ 1.7, while for heavy charged particle interactions it was 2.4 ≤ RD(%) ≤ 4.2 for total proton interaction and 0 ≤ RD(%) ≤ 8 for total alpha particle interaction. In view of the importance of Zeff for identifying and differentiating tissues in diagnostic imaging as well as for estimating accurate dose in radiotherapy and particle-beam therapy, Phy-X/ZeXTRa could be used for fast and accurate calculation of Zeff in a wide energy range for both photon and charged particle (electrons, protons, alpha particles and C ions) interactions.

This study was conducted to investigate adipokine [Apelin and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)] and cardiac troponin (cTnI) response that emerged after adding an essential oil mixture (EOM) (Eucalytus glabutus labii, Thymus vulgaris, Cymbopogon nardus, and Syzygium aromaticum) at different rates to the drinking water of broilers in which thyroid dysfunction (hypo-and hyperthyroidism) had been experimentally induced. In the present study, 150 1-day-old Ross-308 male broiler chicks were used. They were divided into five groups, each with 30 animals. The groups were designed to include five subgroups: control (C), hypothyroid, hypothyroid + 250 ppm EOM, hyperthyroid, and hyperthyroid + 250 ppm EOM, with six animals in each group. At the end of the experiment, Apelin, p-BDNF, cTnI, T3, T4, and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels were investigated in blood serum samples obtained by cervical dislocation from four randomly selected animals from each subgroup, making 100 animals in total. It was found that EOM administration resulted in a dose-dependent increase in p-BDNF and apelin levels, and a decrease in T4 levels in the experimentally induced hypo-and hyper-thyroidism groups, but did not affect T3 and cTnI levels. Conversely, an increase in TSH level was observed in the hypothyroidism groups, whereas a decrease was observed in groups with hyperthyroidism. This study is the first to examine adipokine (Apelin and BDNF) and cTnI response to EOM administration in thyroid dysfunction.
