An examination of performance enhancement attitudes and belief levels regarding sports supplements among students receiving education on ergogenic aids and anti-doping practices

Karakaya, Umut Can; Ceyhan, Mehmet Ali

Background: This study examines the changes in performance enhancement attitudes and sports supplement belief levels among sports sciences faculty students after education on ergogenic aids and anti-doping practices. In the highly competitive environment of modern sports, nutrition and ergogenic aids are crucial in enhancing athletic performance and preventing injuries. However, research in this area is limited, and existing literature emphasizes the need to explore the relationship between education and these topics. Methods: The study employed an experimental design using a one-group pre-test and post-test method. The research group comprised 61 students (24 female and 37 male) from the Faculty of Sport Sciences at Bayburt University. Data collection tools included the “Personal Information Form,” the “Performance Enhancement Attitude Scale (PEAS),” and the “Sports Supplement Belief Scale (SSBS).” Data were collected via Google Forms and analyzed using SPSS 26.0 software. The skewness and kurtosis values were calculated to assess the data distribution, and parametric tests, including t-tests and ANOVA, were applied. Results: The findings revealed that education on ergogenic aids and anti-doping practices significantly improved students’ performance-enhancement attitudes. For example, PEAS scores increased from a pre-test mean of 38.74 to a post-test mean of 44.13 (p < 0.05), representing a change of approximately 13.91%. However, no significant changes were observed in SSBS scores. This suggests that students’ beliefs regarding sports supplements may be shaped by prior knowledge and experiences, making them less influenced by the educational intervention. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that education on ergogenic aids and anti-doping practices can positively influence students’ performance-enhancement attitudes. However, more in-depth educational programs may be required to impact beliefs about sports supplements. These findings can guide the development of more effective educational programs to enhance athletic performance and safeguard athlete health. By providing evidence-based insights, this study significantly contributes to the existing literature and supports the development of policies and educational initiatives in anti-doping and athlete education.

Lyapunov-based adaptive state-space controller for liquid level control of a coupled tank system with unknown model

Lotfieghlim, Armin; Sekban, Hayriye Tuğba; Başçi, Abdullah

In this paper, a Lyapunov-based adaptive state space controller is designed to realize liquid level control in a coupled tank system. The proposed controller is a kind of adaptive control system that combines the principles of state space representation with Lyapunov stability theory to estimate unknown parameters and control a dynamic system. This approach ensures that the system remains stable even when the exact model parameters are unknown or change over time. Moreover, in order to test the performance of the proposed controller, proportional integral (PI) + feedforward (FF) controller is also applied to the same system under the same conditions and the results are compared. The results show that the proposed controller outperforms the PI + FF controller in terms of system response parameters such as rise time, percent overshoot, and settling time. On the other hand, when the error performance metrics integral squared error (ISE), integral time-weighted squared error (ITSE), integral time-weighted absolute error (ITAE), and integral absolute error (IAE) are evaluated, it is seen that the same situation is also realized here, and the proposed controller follows the reference signals with lower error values in real-time studies for different reference signals.

Optimization of Hemp Seed (Cannabis sativa L.) Protein Extraction and Glycation Conditions by Response Surface Methodology: Physicochemical, Functional, and Thermal Characteristics

Yüzer, Elvan; Kutlu, Naciye; Yüzer, Mustafa Onur

In this study, first, optimization using the response surface method was implemented to obtain the highest yield of protein isolate from defatted hemp seed under different extraction conditions. Optimum extraction conditions were determined with 0% salt concentration, 12 pH value, and 49°C temperature. The protein isolate produced under optimum conditions was subjected to the glycation process, and the glycation conditions were also optimized. The optimum conditions for glycation were determined as a protein isolate: sugar ratio of 1.6:1, temperature of 60°C, and time of 90 min, providing the most suitable glycation degrees and browning indices. There was no statistical difference between the glycated protein isolate obtained under these conditions and the nonglycated protein isolate in terms of emulsifying activity index and emulsion stability index. For total phenolic–flavonoid compounds and antioxidant activity, the sugar complex caused a decrease in these values. In addition, there was a high positive correlation between bioactive compounds. SEM micrographs showed relationships between hemp seed protein isolate and sugar, and these interactions led to a spongy three-dimensional microstructure. When the FTIR results were analyzed, the glycated isolate had stronger absorption at 3300–3200 cm−1 compared to the nonglycated isolate. In conclusion, this study reports important findings in terms of functional and characteristic properties of how monosaccharides affect glycation.

A novel exopolysaccharide from cold-adapted yeast Rhodotorula glutinis, along with structural, rheological, antioxidant, and antibiofilm properties

Oztekin, Sebahat; Dikmetas, Dilara Nur; Karbancıoglu-Guler, Funda

In the present study, a novel exopolysaccharide EPS-BMD26 produced by cold-adapted yeast Rhodotorula glutinis was structurally examined, along with its rheological, antioxidant, and antibiofilm properties. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis revealed glucose and galactose as two monosaccharide constituents. The functional groups within the EPS-BMD26 structure were detected by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra of EPS-BMD26 also confirmed its β-D-glucan type with galactose residues with an average molecular weight of 118 kDa. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis revealed that EPS-BMD26 had a high level of thermal stability, up to 326.16 °C. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis demonstrated that EPS-BMD26 had a porous microstructure with fissures. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed its semi-crystalline nature. EPS-BMD26 showed moderate and concentration-dependent antioxidant potential recruiting different methods, including •OH, DPPH•, CUPRAC, and ABTS radical scavenging activities. Water-soluble EPS-BMD26 exhibited high water holding capacity of 190 ± 0.22% with a water solubility index of 60.6 ± 8.3%. At 1.25 mg mL-1, EPS-BMD26 inhibited biofilm formation of Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 by 79.5%. Rheological characterization revealed that the aqueous solution of EPS-BMD26 had shear thinning and pseudoplastic behavior. Given these properties, EPS-BMD26 may be a promising bio-hydrocolloid, antibiofilm agent, and food additive for industrial applications.

Investigation of the phonological awareness of A1 level students learning Turkish as a foreign language

Güngör, Haluk; Koçak, Aslı; Maden, Sedat

Phonological awareness is pivotal in language learning, influencing speaking, writing, and listening abilities. Identifying factors that affect reading development is crucial for effective language instruction. This study explores the phonological awareness of A1-level learners of Turkish as a foreign language (TFL), examining how native language backgrounds impact this foundational skill. Ninety-three participants, whose native languages include Arabic, Indonesian, French, Russian, and Kazakh, were assessed using the Phonological Awareness subtest from the Early Literacy Test (EROT). Data analysis employed non-parametric statistical methods, specifically the Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests. Results revealed no statistically significant relationship between gender and phonological awareness, although female participants exhibited higher average scores than males. Among native language groups, Kazakh speakers achieved the highest phonological awareness scores, whereas Indonesian speakers scored the lowest. These findings indicate that a learner’s native language significantly influences their phonological awareness in Turkish. Despite its limited scope, this pilot study underscores the essential role of phonological awareness in developing comprehensive language skills in TFL learners. l.

Chemical composition of essential oils and comparative analysis of enzyme inhibitory, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities in essential oils of endemic Gelasia sericea (Aucher ex DC.) Zaika, Sukhor. & N. Kilian

Fidan, Muhammed Said; Baltacı, Cemalettin; Akmeşe, Osman; Sefalı, Abdurrahman; Aygül, İmdat; Öz, Mehmet

In this study, essential oil from the aerial parts of Gelasia sericea (Aucher ex DC.) Zaika, Sukhor. & N. Kilian was extracted via hydrodistillation using a Clevenger apparatus. GC-MS/FID analysis determined aldehydes (28.31%) as the dominant group, with eucalyptol (8.71%) as the main constituent. Antioxidant activities were exhibited using DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP assays, with the essential oil demonstrating relatively higher antioxidant properties. The essential oil also showed higher levels of bioactive components, including total antioxidant capacity (160.26 mg AA eq./100 mL), total phenolic content (21.57 mg GA eq./100 mL), and total flavonoid content (14.85 mg QE eq./100 mL). While G. sericea essential oil demonstrated some antioxidant activity, it was significantly lower compared to the reference standard ascorbic acid (AA). The antimicrobial results showed relatively higher antimicrobial activity compared to most bacterial and fungal strains, as evidenced by lower MIC and MBC values and larger inhibition zones. Nevertheless, chloramphenicol (CH) and nalidixic acid (NA) continually showed superior antimicrobial efficacy, with the lowest MIC and MBC values and the largest inhibition zones. The essential oil also demonstrated potent enzyme inhibitory activity, especially against CA-II, AChE, and BChE, with the lowest IC50 value observed for CA-II, highlighting its potential as a potent enzyme inhibitor. However, the essential oil exhibited comparatively greater inhibition against AChE, BChE and α-amylase but was less effective overall. These findings suggest that the G. sericea essential oil has important antioxidant potential and enzyme inhibitory activity, while the essential oil shows varying efficacy across different enzymes.

Beyond Algorithms: Unveiling the Intersection of AI Ethics, Citizenship Education, and Social Studies

Yetişensoy, Okan; Zajda, J; Rapoport, A

The rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in recent years has led to various positive transformations in everyday life. However, this rise has also brought about the emergence of some ethical issues that raise concerns in society. Examples of these ethical issues include the manipulative or harmful use of AI, privacy concerns, bias, discrimination, and lack of transparency and accountability. AI ethics, on the other hand, represent a set of guiding principles that stakeholders should adopt to ensure the responsible development and utilization of AI technologies. Considering that young people are potential users and developers of AI, teaching them these principles from an early age can be seen as a natural part of citizenship education. Thus, incorporating AI ethics-related content into the curriculum of various K-12 courses can be regarded as an effective approach. This chapter argued that social studies, with its focus on fostering effective citizens for the future, will emerge as a crucial application area for this approach. At this point, the relevant study aims to explore the intersections between AI ethics, citizenship education, and social studies. It is believed that the study will make a significant contribution to the literature by revealing the new dynamics created by AI in citizenship education and demonstrating the potential role that the social studies curriculum can play in this regard.

Preschool children's social skills, problem behaviors, academic self-esteem and teacher-child relationship: a serial mediation model

    Tutkun, Cansu; Eskidemir Meral, Seda

Introduction: Research has shown that children's social skills have effects on their problem behaviors. However, the mechanisms through which social skills contribute to reducing problem behaviors need further clarification. Methods: This study examined the relationship between preschool children's social skills and problem behaviors, as well as the independent and serial mediating roles of academic self-esteem and teacher-child relationship in this relationship. The study included 382 children aged 3–5 years, randomly selected in Türkiye. Results and discussion: As a result of the study: (1) there was a significant and negative relationship between problem behaviors and social skills, academic self-esteem and teacher-child relationship; (2) the mediating role of academic self-esteem and teacher-child relationship in the relationship between social skills and problem behaviors was supported; and (3) the serial mediating role of academic self-esteem and teacher-child relationship in the effect of social skills on problem behaviors, respectively, was found. These findings indicated that children's social skills may help to increase their academic self-esteem, improve the teacher-child relationship, and thus reduce their problem behaviors. Therefore, these results have important implications for designing interventions to increase preschool children's social skills, academic self-esteem, and teacher-child relationship, as well as to prevent the early development of problem behaviors.

Soil Permittivity Extraction by Time-Domain Free-Space Calibration-Free Microwave Measurements With No Thickness Information

Hasar, Ugur Cem; Korkmaz, Huseyin; Kaya, Yunus; Iliev, Teodor

An attractive microwave free-space method is proposed for permittivity extraction of soil samples using calibration-free time-domain measurements. Different from other similar methods in the literature which use the layer-stripping approach in the forward direction in the extraction process, its formalism is based on the layer-stripping approach in the backward direction, whereby allowing extraction of permittivity from interfacial reflection coefficient only without resorting to any thickness information, especially useful for time-domain analysis of multilayer structures having multiple reflection terms. Effects of angle misalignment, loss, and surface roughness on the extraction performance of the proposed method (PM) are analyzed by numerical examples. Permittivity measurements of three low-loss flat solid samples [polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), and polyoxymethylene (POM)] were first performed by a free-space setup operating over 1–18-GHz frequency range to validate our methodology and compare its accuracy against other similar methods in the literature. Thereafter, permittivity measurements of two soil samples sieved with similar and different sizes (coarse- and fine-grained soil samples) by the same free-space setup were then considered to assess the applicability and performance of our method for electromagnetic property analysis of homogeneous and partially inhomogeneous soil samples.

Effect of Fe Amount on Microstructure and Fluidity of A356 Alloy

    Durmus, M.; Dispinar, D.; Gavgali, M.; Colak, M.

The most important factor affecting the production of quality parts with aluminum alloys is the quality of molten metal. One of the determining factors in molten metal quality is the minimization of trace impurity elements in the alloy. One of the most harmful impurities among these elements is Fe, and its amount is a determining factor in its negative effect. It is known that Fe negatively affects the quality of aluminum, causing a decrease in mechanical properties. Most of the Fe in the alloy forms intermetallic from needle-like to complex Chinese-script structures. In this study, carbon steel and stainless-steel rods were immersed in the liquid metal at casting temperatures of 700°C and 750°C in A356 aluminum casting alloy and were subjected to diffusion for 1, 2 and 5 hours. Subsequently, a 4-channel flow test mold with various section thicknesses was used. All samples were measured by measuring the liquid metal advance distances of all sections in mm. Then, microstructure analyses were performed on the obtained sections. As a result, it is observed that as Fe diffusion increases, liquid metal advancement distances decrease and Fe intermetallics form in the microstructure. © The Author(s) 2025. Open Access. Online software for a new risk assessment method in occupational health and safety: RSCAL

    Ateş, Fatih Mehmet; Doğan, Ömer

Risk assessment is necessary for the safety of employees in the workplace. Risk assessment methods contain some deficiencies arising from the persons performing the analysis. In order to partially overcome this situation, a risk assessment method has been developed by the authors by utilizing the data on occupational accidents in Turkey. In the method, Occupational Health and Safety Professionals who will perform the risk assessment can calculate the risk score without giving a numerical value for any hazard and corresponding risk that they identify in the workplace. In the study, a user-friendly online software called RSCAL by the authors, with a web address of https://rscal.com.tr/, which can meet all the above-mentioned requirements and calculate risk scores for workplaces serving in all types of sectors, has been developed. Through this online application, the identified hazard, risk and exposures of the business to be analyzed can be selected; the necessary corrective and preventive actions can be written by the user and then the risk score can be calculated. After that, all hazards specific to the enterprise can be meticulously identified and the risk assessment of the enterprise can be made by calculating the risk scores. This risk assessment can also be printed out in excel file format. In the future, parameters such as the deadline for each hazard, the legal requirement or standard from which the corrective preventive action to be taken arises can be added to the RSCAL calculation tool.

The impact of osmotic dehydration and microwave drying process conditions on the quality characteristics of celery roots (Apium graveolens l. Subsp. rapaceum)

    Kutlu, Naciye

In this study, celery roots were dried by the osmotic dehydration-assisted microwave drying method, and both osmotic dehydration (OD) and microwave conditions were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). Utilizing a Box–Behnken experimental design, the drying time was minimized while maximizing the total phenolic compounds (TPC) in dried samples at different OD salt concentrations (10, 20 and 30 %), OD temperatures (30, 45 and 60 °C), OD durations (1, 2 and 3 h) and microwave powers (210, 350 and 490 W). The optimal drying conditions were identified as 15.05 % for OD salt concentration, 42.5 °C for OD temperature, 1.6 h for OD duration and 489.7 W for microwave power. Under these optimal conditions, the predicted values for time and TPC were 10 min and 104.38 mg GAE/100 g, respectively. The composite desirability value was 0.99 as a result of optimization. The experimental values for time and TPC were measured as 11 min and 97.45 mg GAE/100 g, respectively. The predicted and experimental values were found to be statistically similar to each other. A comparison with control groups designed to assess the effects of OD and microwave processes revealed that these processes significantly influenced both quality (TPC, antioxidant activity, color) and drying characteristics (drying time, rehydration rate). The greenness assessment value was calculated as 78 using the MoGAPI tool. Consequently, the application of OD pretreatment and use of the innovative microwave drying method as a final drying step in vegetable drying was successfully implemented to enhance the properties of the final product.

Hand hygiene is an important factor in the prevention of healthcare-associated infections. Studies show healthcare professionals' hand hygiene practices vary and are not at sufficient levels. This study aimed to examine the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the beliefs and practices of nurses working in intensive care units (ICU) towards hand hygiene. This was longitudinal, repeated, and cross-sectional study. The study was conducted in 2 phases between January 2,2020 and March 10,2021 in the intensive care unit of a university hospital in northern Turkey. No sampling method was used. The objective was to reach the entire population. The first phase of this study was completed with 119 (76% of the population) ICU nurses and the second phase with 85 (70% of the population) ICU nurses. The data were collected with the personal information form, hand hygiene belief scale (HHBS), hand hygiene practices inventory (HHPI) and the views of the intensive care nurses related to COVID-19. Descriptive statistics such as mean and standard deviations, frequency, and percentages and analytical statistics such as t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test were used for data analysis at the significance level of P < .05. The majority of the nurses who participated in the study were female (75.6%; 69.4%), with a mean age of 30.82 ± 5.51 and 30.58 ± 5.51 years, respectively. There was a significant difference (P < .05) between the median HHBS (P = .002) and HHPI (P = .001) scores before and after COVID-19. All nurses (100%) reported that the pandemic was effective in hand hygiene practices. In this study, it was determined that the hand hygiene beliefs and practices of nurses were high, and the scores of nurses' hand hygiene beliefs and practices after COVID-19 increased significantly. Healthcare professionals must always adhere to stringent standards of hand hygiene, rather than merely during periods of heightened challenges. To ensure the sustainability of optimal hand hygiene practices, it is recommended that motivational interventions that strengthen beliefs and practices related to hand hygiene should be implemented and that studies should be conducted to evaluate their effectiveness.

Performance analysis of piezoelectric-based energy harvesting in reinforced concrete buildings under seismic and live loads

Ergün, Mustafa; Uyar, Mehmet; Malgaca, Levent

The demand for autonomous energy solutions in seismic regions is increasing for the uninterrupted operation of structural health monitoring systems. In this context, energy harvesting systems offer a solution for low-power devices, especially in earthquake zones where external energy sources may be interrupted. This study evaluates the energy harvesting capacity of a piezoelectric energy harvesting mechanism placed at specific locations in the columns of a reinforced concrete structure, considering both earthquake and live load conditions. A smart building model is developed by placing sensor modules with piezoelectric material on the columns of a three-story reinforced concrete building. The finite element model of the smart building, which is formed by integrating various technologies and sensors, is created in ANSYS, and specific locations on the columns are selected as sensor points. Dynamic analyses are performed under earthquake conditions by considering seismic records from the Imperial Valley, Erzincan, and Darfield earthquakes. Experimental results of a smart structure with patched piezoelectric material are used to verify the simulation results. The voltage, current, and power responses obtained from the sensor points are examined with the payload effect placed at the end point of the sensor module. When the power values collected from the sensor points are compared, it can be said that the maximum power obtained from the smart building under both earthquake and live load is 0.355 W, while the minimum power value reaches 0.168 W. The results show that the energy harvesting mechanism can provide external power to support electronic devices in regions where earthquake effects are frequent and high. Thus, this study presents an innovative contribution to smart building systems by investigating the energy harvesting potential under earthquake and live loads in a reinforced concrete structure equipped with piezoelectric sensors. The model, validated with numerical and experimental analyses, proposes a sustainable energy source for structural health monitoring systems in seismic regions.
