A proposed response surface-based robust design model for quality engineering problems

    Özdemir, Akın

The aim of robust design models is to reduce the variability reduction as small as possible. The process bias defined as a difference between the desired target value and the process mean is an important concern for quality engineering problems. In addition, the selection of different variability measures may also change optimal operating conditions for a response variable. Therefore, this paper is three-fold. One, another view of the dual response model is proposed with the three different variability measures in order to determine optimum robust design solutions for input variables while minimizing the process bias. Two, the linearization of constraints is performed using the sequential quadratic programming method as an effective optimization method. Three, a printing process from the literature is conducted to obtain the best optimal settings for input variables. Finally, the results of the proposed model show approximately % 16 more variance reduction than traditional models.

Use of trigonometric series functions in free vibration analysis of laminated composite beams

    Kahya, Volkan; Turan, Muhittin

In this study, free vibration analysis of layered composite beams is performed by using an analytical method based on trigonometric series. Based on the first-ordershear deformation beam theory, the governing equations are derived from the Lagrange’s equations. Appropriate trigonometric series functions are selected to satisfythe end conditions of the beam. Navier-type solution is used to obtain natural frequencies. Natural frequencies are calculated for different end conditions and laminastacking. It was seen that the slenderness, E11/E22 and fiber angle have a significanteffect on natural frequency. The results of the study are quite compatible with theliterature.

E-Tailer Success Factors: an Investigation of the Relationship Between Resources, Competitiveness and Performance

    Kara, Adnan

In the 21 century, retailing is an important part of the economy. E-tailers are an emerging innovativeaspect of retailing. With e-tailers, geographic boundaries are eliminated and a wider range of services can beprovided to consumers. Parallel to these developments, the number of competitors in the e-tailers sector isincreasing and the sector is in a more rigorous competitive environment. The secret to being successful in thismarket, where stronger can survive, is difference from traditional business at some point. The success factorsof e-tailers need to be handled separately for reasons such as cost structures being different and being totallytechnology-oriented. In this study, success factors that affect the performance of e-retailers are examined. Etailperformance in research; organizational learning is explained by inimatibility and core competencies. Inaddition, internet marketing involvement and competition intensity are considered as control variables. In theresearch model, it is assumed that there is a relationship between resources and market power, market powerand performance. The data of the research was collected through online questionnaire from the universitystudents and staff selected by easy sampling. The research model was tested with structural equation modeling. As a result of the research, it has been determined that organizational learning and basic competencies affectthe market power. The original contribution obtained with this study is to show that the determinants ofperformance for e-tailers are the resources they have. The limitations of the research are that it cannot begeneralized to large masses due to the sample. In addition, the premium pricing of e-tailers selected forperformance measurement made it difficult to obtain an objective finding, because it was perceived as asubjective expression that varies according to personal preferences. In future studies, it is recommended thatthe use of price satisfaction related to the performance of e-tailers.

    Ecem Bayram, Nesrin

The aim of this study was to assess the quality of five propolis samples obtained from Turkey (TP), China (CP), Brazil (BP1, BP2), and Ethiopia (EP). The phenolic compounds of the propolis were identified and quantified using the liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry technique (LC-MS/MS). In addition, quality parameters such as total flavonoid content, total phenolic content, free-radical scavenging activity and element contents were investigated. As a result of LC-MS/MS analysis, the extracts were sorted as TP> BP1> BP2> CP> EP in terms of the total concentration of individual phenolic compounds. Chlorogenic acid was determined as the dominant compound in BP1 and EP, p-coumaric acid as the dominant compound in the BP2 and trans-ferulic acid as the dominant compound in the samples from CP and TP. The concentration of DPPH was higher in TP whereas the ABTS concentration was almost similar to other propolis extracts. The contents of potassium (K), calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg) and sodium (Na) in the propolis samples were in the range of 2416.75-14416.02 mg/kg, 8.52-613.25 mg/kg, 102.66-1425.82 mg/kg, 523.84-7336.74 mg/kg and 57.65-191.15 mg/kg, respectively. Consequently, it is again supported that chemical characteristics and activity of propolis varies according to its geographical origin with this study.
